Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Automatic Writing, Ouija Boards, the Planchette and Communication With People After Their Death
Transcript
- 0:02We see a proliferation of people who claim to act as
- 0:05intermediaries through a process of seance or use of a Ouija
- 0:09board or planchette to communicate with individuals who
- 0:13have passed away. The interest in this area goes
- 0:18through periods of peaks and troughs, but continually
- 0:21captures the popular imagination, particularly for
- 0:25people who are unwilling or unable to let go of their
- 0:29deceased loved ones, or who have specific unfinished business for
- 0:34which they are seeking answers. Shakespeare recounted numerous
- 0:39stories of visitations by ghosts who interacted with the living,
- 0:44usually to provoke some direct action of retribution upon some
- 0:48party who had done them wrong, such as the ghost of Hamlet's
- 0:53father or Caesar's ghost. Appearing to Brutus were the
- 0:57ghosts of those he had killed to achieve the crown in Richard the
- 1:01Third. Such stories abound.
- 1:06The ancient Greeks and Romans had many tales of the existence
- 1:09of the being after death, the descent into the underworld, the
- 1:14different regions, and they definitely believed that the
- 1:18being and personality that existed in the bodily form
- 1:22persisted after death and under certain circumstances contact
- 1:27between the embodied realm and the after death realms was
- 1:31possible. If we view the process of the
- 1:35dissolution of the tie between the physical body, the vital
- 1:39being, the mental formation of the being, and the psychic being
- 1:43or soul, and the stages that take place after death, we find
- 1:49that it is possible that once the physical body has begun to
- 1:53dissolve at the time of death, the other elements of the being
- 1:57may continue to hold their form for some period of time until
- 2:01eventually the vital elements dissolve, the mental formations
- 2:06dissolve, and only the soul or psychic being continues on its
- 2:11way to take a new birth. The Tibetans were focused on
- 2:16helping the being disentangle from the bodily life and move on
- 2:21into its next incarnations. Westerners have been more
- 2:25focused on how to maintain and hold on to the disembodied being
- 2:29and interacting with it in some form.
- 2:32The famous escape artist Harry Houdini spent much of his time
- 2:37in the 1920s debunking much of what went on at that time, a
- 2:41psychic connection to those departed from this world.
- 2:46He showed that much of the activity, the seances and
- 2:50contacts, was simply taking advantage of the gullibility of
- 2:55those who wanted to believe but had no real knowledge of the
- 2:59actual process or even the reality of such contacts.
- 3:05A disciple asks what kind of forces can be called up by using
- 3:10the planchette and how is it done?
- 3:14The mother writes quote. Oh, oh, do you mean automatic
- 3:20writing? Yes.
- 3:23That depends on the people who do it.
- 3:25Sometimes there are no forces at all.
- 3:28It is the mental and vital vibrations of the people who use
- 3:31the planchette, and it is their own subconscious ideas which
- 3:36they bring up 98 times out of 100.
- 3:41Later, Mother added the following remark.
- 3:44I say 90 times out of 100, for there are exceptions.
- 3:47I know of some, but they are so rare that it is better not to
- 3:51speak about them if they are in contact with invisible entities.
- 3:57It may be all sorts of things, but nothing very advisable.
- 4:02Almost with certainty it could be said that it is not what
- 4:05people think. It is in the sense that most
- 4:09often they try to evoke what they call the spirit of a dead
- 4:12person, a relative or a friend or someone they loved and with
- 4:17whom they wish to remain in touch.
- 4:20And besides, they ask them the most foolish questions.
- 4:25Fortunately, they don't succeed in disturbing them.
- 4:30From this point of view, one can say that if you had a relation
- 4:33of deep and sincere love with someone who has passed away,
- 4:37left his body, and if you are calm and strong enough yourself,
- 4:42this person may choose to take shelter vitally in your
- 4:45atmosphere, the atmosphere, the one he loves, for a more or less
- 4:50long period. In this case, it means that the
- 4:54relation was very close, very intimate, and if you are not
- 4:59altogether materialistic to the point of not having any direct
- 5:02mental perception, you can remain in mental contact with
- 5:06this person, in communication with him.
- 5:10It is a rather exceptional case, for usually if your atmosphere
- 5:15is calm and strong enough to be able to truly serve as a
- 5:18protection, the person who has left his body enters into a deep
- 5:23rest there, and it is not at all good to disturb it.
- 5:27And the best thing you can do is to enfold this person with your
- 5:31love and leave him in peace. Therefore, even if it were
- 5:37possible to enter into communication with him by this
- 5:40means, which I would call very crude, it would be improper to
- 5:45do so. But usually people who have the
- 5:49capacity, the faculties required to serve as a shelter for some
- 5:54time, a transitional shelter for those who have gone, do not have
- 5:59this ridiculous idea of disturbing the rest of the one
- 6:03they love by tapping on a planchette.
