- 0:00Hi everybody, and welcome back to another episode of the Elon
- 0:04Musk Podcast. Today, we're turning our focus
- 0:07to the world of electric vehicles, with an emphasis on
- 0:10European automakers. The IAA Motor show in Munich was
- 0:14a hotbed of activity featuring the grand unveilings of electric
- 0:18concept cars from BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
- 0:22Both German giants are making massive strides to ensure they
- 0:25don't lag behind in the global EV market that's dominated by
- 0:29Tesla in emerging Chinese companies.
- 0:32But before we get into the nitty gritty of these unveilings and
- 0:35what they signify for the automotive sector, and before we
- 0:37get into the nitty gritty of these unveilings and what they
- 0:40signify for the automotive sector, let me quickly remind

- 0:59reveal. At the IAA Mobility Motor Show
- 1:02in Munich, BMW showcased its electric concept car named the
- 1:07Vision New Claus. Now this car is expected to be
- 1:10the harbinger of a new era for BMW, built on a new
- 1:14architectural foundation that will serve as the blueprint for
- 1:18all its future Ev's. Oliver Zipped, the CEO of BMW,
- 1:23shared that they're planning to double their EV sales this year.
- 1:26We also estimated that by the end of 2023, battery Ev's will
- 1:30comprise 15% of BMW's global sales.
- 1:34For a brand steeped in a history of internal combustion engines,
- 1:37that's a very significant pivot. Now, Mercedes-Benz wasn't far
- 1:41behind either. They unveiled their concepts CLA
- 1:44Class, another electric vehicle designed from the ground up to
- 1:48serve as a cornerstone for their future electric offerings.
- 1:51Their CEO was all praised for the car, claiming that its specs
- 1:55are unparalleled in its class. It boasts an impressive range of
- 1:58750 kilometers and a quick charge feature that can juice up
- 2:02the car to run 400 kilometers in just 15 minutes.
- 2:07If that doesn't show their ambition in the EV sector, I
- 2:10don't really know what could, and the introduction of
- 2:12dedicated EV platforms for BMW and Mercedes marks a significant
- 2:17departure from their previous strategies.
- 2:19Earlier, they would retrofit their existing combustion or
- 2:22hybrid vehicles to accommodate the batteries, but with these
- 2:26new reveals, they're setting up a dedicated assembly line for
- 2:29EV's. It's a very serious commitment,
- 2:33but despite these efforts and lists of pine that both Mercedes
- 2:36and BMW have a mountain to climb to catch up the Tesla, let alone
- 2:41to dominate this sector. Now a senior research analyst at
- 2:45Bernstein Research, Daniel Roska, pointed out that while
- 2:49these new platforms are a step forward, they may not completely
- 2:53close the gap with Tesla and the competitive Chinese players.
- 2:56And Speaking of competition, price wars are becoming
- 2:59increasingly common the EV market.
- 3:01Tesla has been aggressive with its pricing strategy, which puts
- 3:05additional pressure on premium market players like BMW and
- 3:08Mercedes. Now Collinius from Mercedes
- 3:12emphasize that they aren't aiming to push volume, but are
- 3:15focusing on value over volume. This could be a significant
- 3:20differentiator in a market where many players, including Tesla,
- 3:23are fighting fiercely for market share.
- 3:26Now Volkswagen is also in the race with unique strategy.
- 3:30They plan to target various market segments by offering cars
- 3:33at different price points, and with the announcement of
- 3:36launching 11 new EV models by 2027, they're definitely not
- 3:42holding back. While these vehicles themselves
- 3:44are impressive, the real differentiator in the EV sector
- 3:47seems to be technology. Tesla software capabilities,
- 3:50especially with Autopilot, have set a high standard, but
- 3:54European automakers are catching up.
- 3:57BMW, for example, is touting its head up display that projects
- 4:01information out of the driver's windshield.
- 4:03Now, Zips also highlighted their significant investment in
- 4:07digital aspects, including semiconductors.
- 4:11So the electric vehicle market is getting more and more
- 4:14crowded. It's no longer just Tesla and
- 4:16the Chinese companies like BYD. But why is this happening?
- 4:20One reason could be the growing consumer awareness about
- 4:24environmental issues. And as the climate crisis
- 4:26intensifies, people are increasingly considering
- 4:29sustainable modes of transportation, thereby driving
- 4:32up the demand for Ev's. And governments around the globe
- 4:35are also implementing stringent emission regulations, forcing
- 4:39automakers to pivot to more eco friendly technologies.
- 4:43Now BMW and Mercedes-Benz in particular have historically
- 4:47been associated with luxury, performance and engineering
- 4:51excellence. But they also recognize the
- 4:54urgent need for sustainability and are taking big strides to
- 4:57make their fleet more eco friendly.
- 5:00This urgency is partly due to market demand, but it's also
- 5:03because the competition is fierce in not waiting for them
- 5:07to catch up. BMW is offering a concept car
- 5:10that aims to set the stage for a brand new lineup for their EVs
- 5:14and they plan to introduce it over the next few years.
- 5:18And according to BMW CEO, this framework is such a huge game
- 5:23changer. It's not about creating another
- 5:25electric car, it's about shifting the very core of what
- 5:29BMW represents as a brand. They're not only electrifying
- 5:33their vehicles, but they're also reimagining how these cars will
- 5:37interact with the drivers and with the environment and other
- 5:40vehicles. The user experience is expected
- 5:43to be significantly augmented by digital features, aiming to make
- 5:47driving more intuitive and also enjoyable.
- 5:50And on the flip side, Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA class
- 5:53offers not just an electric vehicle, but a feat of
- 5:56engineering that pushes the boundaries of what Ev's can do.
- 5:59750 kilometer range is impressive, or really what
- 6:04caught everyone's attention was its rapid charging capabilities.
- 6:0815 minutes for 400 kilometers is something that even Tesla hasn't
- 6:13achieved in their consumer models, and if you can bring
- 6:16this from a concept to an actual car available in the market,
- 6:19that would represent a massive leap in EV technology.
- 6:24Now let's talk about some of the challenges they faced.
- 6:27First off, the issue of battery technology and sourcing lithium
- 6:30ion batteries are at the heart of all Ev's right now, and
- 6:33securing a steady, sustainable supply of these materials is a
- 6:38logistical and ethical challenge.
- 6:40Companies are racing to find alternative materials or improve
- 6:43the efficiency of existing ones. This is where Tesla has an
- 6:46advantage with its Gigafactories and plans to manufacture its own
- 6:50batteries. Whether BMW and Mercedes can
- 6:53catch up on this front, it's something to keep an eye on.
- 6:56Another challenge? Infrastructure.
- 6:58Europe does have a growing network of charging stations,
- 7:01but it's not yet an extensive network like it is in the US,
- 7:07and it needs to be a bigger market to support a mass
- 7:10adoption of electric vehicles. Now both BMW and Mercedes will
- 7:14need to consider how their cars will fit into the existing
- 7:17infrastructure, or what steps they could take to expand it or
- 7:21make their own. And let's not forget about the
- 7:23emerging competition from China. Companies like NEO and Sbegg and
- 7:28BYD are not just content with conquering the domestic market.
- 7:32They have global ambitions that are slowly but steadily entering
- 7:35European and North American markets.
- 7:38With often lower price models and impressive tech features.
- 7:41These companies are set to give the traditional European
- 7:44automakers a run for their money.
- 7:47Meanwhile, VW and Audi are also stepping up their game.
- 7:51VW has made it clear that they intend to cater to various
- 7:54segments of the market, providing options for every type
- 7:58of consumer, and the versatility in their approach can make them
- 8:01a formidable competitor to both BMW and Mercedes.
- 8:06Now we have to remember again Tesla's Autopilot Tesla
- 8:10software, the hardware that drives that software.
- 8:13It set a standard for autonomous driving features.
- 8:16And how will BMW and Mercedes compete on them?
- 8:20They're working on it, but as mentioned earlier, BMW is
- 8:23investing heavily in digital features, semiconductors, which
- 8:27can significantly enhance vehicle performance and
- 8:30experience. And these moves by BMW and
- 8:33Mercedes-Benz are not mere incremental steps in the realm
- 8:36of EVs. They signify a wholesale
- 8:40commitment to the future that's electric.
- 8:43And while these are challenges and there's stiff competition
- 8:46out there, their willingness to invest, innovate and adapt
- 8:49speaks volumes about the resilience and vision of these
- 8:52iconic brands. Thank you so much for tuning
