Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Thank you, Mike lane, a five, one loss to Minnesota.
- 0:03Speaker 1: You've had a couple of days to digest that some
- 0:06Speaker 1: good practices between, uh, then and now, where do you
- 0:10Speaker 1: feel the biggest hiccups were for Seattle in that game
- 0:13Speaker 1: against the wild? And over these last couple of days,
- 0:15Speaker 1: what have you done to get back to maybe your
- 0:18Speaker 1: style of play, your game to reinforce some of those
- 0:21Speaker 1: things that you want to see done here?
- 0:23Speaker 2: I think, uh, as in maybe a couple of the
- 0:26Speaker 2: games that we've talked about, I think our mistakes that
- 0:28Speaker 2: we've made were catastrophic. Um, I give Minnesota full credit.
- 0:33Speaker 2: They were hard to play against. The last 40 minutes,
- 0:36Speaker 2: we didn't generate much. You know, it wasn't great from
- 0:41Speaker 2: that standpoint. It wasn't like we weren't trying, that's for sure.
- 0:44Speaker 2: But they did a good job of clogging things up
- 0:46Speaker 2: when they got, you know, a 4-1 lead. But how
- 0:49Speaker 2: they got there was disappointing to me, you know, getting
- 0:53Speaker 2: scored on right away, missed assignment, and, you know, the–
- 1:00Speaker 2: breakaway goal that Coleman scored coming out of the penalty
- 1:03Speaker 2: box those are things that you can't do and so
- 1:07Speaker 2: you know from that standpoint I thought we kind of
- 1:10Speaker 2: shot ourselves in the foot a little bit and took
- 1:13Speaker 2: ourselves out of the game so to speak so you
- 1:18Speaker 2: know if we clean those things up you know I
- 1:20Speaker 2: think we'll be a lot better off obviously and you
- 1:24Speaker 2: know it's just we've got to eliminate those catastrophic mistakes.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Is it, and maybe comforting isn't the right word, but
- 1:31Speaker 1: how does it feel for you knowing that it is
- 1:33Speaker 1: just one or two mistakes and rather than just, you know,
- 1:38Speaker 1: a hole, a massive hole within your overall game plan?
- 1:41Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, I guess better than complete holes, but
- 1:46Speaker 2: you know, at the same time too, we needed to
- 1:48Speaker 2: generate more offense. We need to generate more offense. So, um,
- 1:52Speaker 2: you know, just a variation of different things. And certainly
- 1:54Speaker 2: we took a look at some of the things and, um,
- 1:57Speaker 2: I had a couple of good days of practice, and
- 2:00Speaker 2: we'll see what we get tonight here. It's a big
- 2:02Speaker 2: game for our hockey team. We've got a chance to
- 2:05Speaker 2: go 3-1 in this homestand against four very good hockey teams,
- 2:10Speaker 2: and it's a big hockey game for us. So I
- 2:13Speaker 2: want to see us rise to the occasion, rise to
- 2:16Speaker 2: the challenge. Embrace it would probably be the biggest word.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Let's embrace the challenge. Let's embrace whatever pressure we're feeling.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Let's embrace that. With the biggest news of the week
- 2:29Speaker 1: being Jared McCann now out for 10 weeks, I guess
- 2:31Speaker 1: the saving grace is that you're losing him in game
- 2:35Speaker 1: 11 and not game 60 when you're going to need
- 2:37Speaker 1: him down the stretch. What do you lose with a
- 2:40Speaker 1: Jared McCann out of the lineup, and who are you
- 2:43Speaker 1: looking at at stepping up to help fill that void?
- 2:47Speaker 2: Well, look, the mantra is always going to be, you know,
- 2:56Speaker 2: gives other guys opportunity and it does now in saying
- 3:01Speaker 2: that you know i'm jared mccann i'm sitting there listening
- 3:04Speaker 2: and i'm hurt and i know that i i'm a
- 3:06Speaker 2: guy who provides a lot and we know he's a
- 3:09Speaker 2: guy who provides a lot so i don't think you
- 3:11Speaker 2: can ever completely fill that hole i guess that's my
- 3:14Speaker 2: point but what we have to do here is we
- 3:17Speaker 2: have to step up by committee and try and do
- 3:20Speaker 2: a good job of taking care of that. Obviously, we've
- 3:23Speaker 2: got Yanni Neyman has been called up. Yanni is a
- 3:28Speaker 2: year older than he was last year, obviously, at this time.
- 3:33Speaker 2: We're looking forward to seeing him play and see where
- 3:35Speaker 2: he's at.
- 3:36Speaker 1: With Newman, he leads the AHL in goal scoring with
- 3:38Speaker 1: nine this season. Have you talked to the coaches down
- 3:41Speaker 1: in Coachella Valley, the management there? What are they saying
- 3:44Speaker 1: about how he's progressed from last year to this year?
- 3:47Speaker 1: What have you seen from him in the first few
- 3:50Speaker 1: practices that you've been able to watch him this year?
- 3:52Speaker 2: I thought he was better in training camp this year.
- 3:55Speaker 2: I think his understanding of the details and things like
- 3:58Speaker 2: that are better now than they were. Sometimes when you're
- 4:02Speaker 2: a young player who has a big shot and is
- 4:05Speaker 2: used to scoring goals, you don't always see the defensive
- 4:08Speaker 2: side of the game like you have to. That's what
- 4:11Speaker 2: you have to have in order to gain trust from
- 4:13Speaker 2: the coaching staff. and I think he's done a really
- 4:16Speaker 2: good job of improving in those areas. Of course, I've
- 4:19Speaker 2: talked to the coaching staff down there. I talk to
- 4:21Speaker 2: them all the time. And, you know, I think the
- 4:25Speaker 2: other thing about him is he's providing himself with opportunities
- 4:29Speaker 2: offensively because he's going to the net hard. He's planting
- 4:31Speaker 2: himself in front. You know, if you look at, you know,
- 4:34Speaker 2: a guy like Alex Ovechkin, you know, everybody thinks he's
- 4:37Speaker 2: got this big shot, which he does. Everybody thinks he's
- 4:40Speaker 2: scored all these goals standing over there on the dock,
- 4:42Speaker 2: which he's scored a bunch, but he's scored... more than
- 4:45Speaker 2: that standing in front of the net. So that's what
- 4:47Speaker 2: we need the hunter to do. We need him to
- 4:49Speaker 2: get to the net and use his shot.
