- 0:11Hello, friends. It's Shawn here.
- 0:14It's Wednesday. It's the 10th of December.
- 0:17Thanks for tapping on play. Great to have your company.
- 0:20I wonder what your week is looking like.
- 0:21Here we are in the middle of the week.
- 0:23We've reached hump day. We are almost halfway through,
- 0:26or maybe you're over halfway through, depending on when
- 0:28you're listening to this. And wherever you are.
- 0:32We have now reached the point, some would say the pinnacle, the
- 0:35climax of Daniel, because when you think of Daniel in the
- 0:38Bible, I said Daniel and the first phrase that comes to your
- 0:41mind is that's right, Daniel in the lion's den.
- 0:48That's just how we roll. We have been well conditioned by
- 0:501000 Sunday school classes where this story was shared.
- 0:54And I know we've got umpteen books that we've read our kids
- 0:57as they grew up with stories of Daniel in the lion's den.
- 1:00This is a beautiful story of God's provision for His people,
- 1:05Well, His person not to get eaten.
- 1:07And who doesn't like not getting eaten?
- 1:09I'm pretty sure that's all of us.
- 1:11So Holy Spirit, come wherever we are today, whatever part of our
- 1:17life journey we are on, may this story speak to us and may you
- 1:21reveal more of yourself to us right now.
- 1:27Oh, what a treat. Friends, let's settle in and
- 1:30read together this story as told in Daniel chapter 6.
- 1:45Darius the Mead decided to divide the Kingdom into 120
- 1:50provinces, and he appointed a high officer to rule over each
- 1:53province. The king also chose Daniel and
- 1:57two others as administrators to supervise the high officers and
- 2:01protect the King's interests. Daniel soon proved himself more
- 2:06capable than all the other administrators and high
- 2:09officers. Because of Daniel's great
- 2:11ability, the king made plans to place him over the entire
- 2:16empire. Then the other administrators
- 2:19and high officers began searching for some fault in the
- 2:23way Daniel was handling government affairs, but they
- 2:26couldn't find anything to criticise or condemn.
- 2:29He was faithful, always responsible and completely
- 2:33trustworthy. So they concluded our only
- 2:37chance of finding grounds for accusing Daniel will be in
- 2:41connection with the rules of his religion.
- 2:44So the administrators and high officers went to the king and
- 2:47said, the Long live king Darius, we are all in agreement.
- 2:52We administrators, officials, high officers, advisers and
- 2:57governors, and that the King should make a law that will be
- 3:01strictly enforced. Give orders that for the next 30
- 3:05days, any person who prays to anyone, divine or human, except
- 3:10for you, Your Majesty, will be thrown into the den of lions.
- 3:15And now Your Majesty issue and sign this law so it cannot be
- 3:19changed. An official law of the Medes and
- 3:22Persians that cannot be revoked. So King Darius signed the law.
- 3:29But when Daniel learned that the law had been signed, he went
- 3:32home and knelt down as usual in his upstairs room with its
- 3:36windows open toward Jerusalem. He prayed 3 times a day, just as
- 3:41he had always done, giving thanks to his God.
- 3:45Then the officials went together to Daniel's house and found him
- 3:49praying and asking for God's help.
- 3:52So they went straight to the king and reminded him about his
- 3:55law. Did you not sign a law that for
- 3:58the next 30 days any person who prays to anyone, divine or
- 4:03human, except for you, your Majesty, who will be thrown into
- 4:07the den of lions? Yes, the king replied.
- 4:12That decision stands. It is an official law of the
- 4:16Medes and Persians that cannot be revoked.
- 4:21Then they told the king that man Daniel, one of the captives from
- 4:26Judah, is ignoring you and your law.
- 4:29He still prays to his God three times a day.
- 4:34Hearing this, the king was deeply troubled, and he tried to
- 4:38think of a way to save Daniel. He spent the rest of the day
- 4:41looking for a way to get Daniel out of this predicament.
- 4:44In the evening, the men went together to the king and said,
- 4:48Your Majesty, you know that according to the law of the
- 4:51Medes and the Persians, no law that the king signs can be
- 4:54changed. So at last the king gave orders
- 4:59for Daniel to be arrested and thrown into the den of lions.
- 5:03The king said to him, May your God, whom you serve so
- 5:08faithfully, rescue you. A stone was brought and placed
- 5:14over the mouth of the den. The king sealed the stone with
- 5:18his own royal seal and the seals of his nobles, so that no one
- 5:22could rescue Daniel. Then the king returned to his
- 5:25palace and spent the night fasting.
- 5:28He refused his usual entertainment and couldn't sleep
- 5:31at all that night. Very early the next morning the
- 5:36king got up and hurried out to the lion's den.
- 5:39When he got there, he called out in anguish.
- 5:42Daniel, servant of the living God, Was your God, whom you
- 5:46served so faithfully able to rescue you from the lions?
- 5:51Daniel answered. Long live the king.
- 5:54My God sent his Angel to shut the lion's mouth so they would
- 5:59not hurt me, for I've been found innocent in his sight, and I
- 6:03have not wronged you, Your Majesty.
- 6:06The king was overjoyed and ordered that Daniel be lifted
- 6:09from the den. Not a scratch was found on him,
- 6:13for he had trusted in his God. Then the king gave orders to
- 6:17arrest the men who had maliciously accused Daniel.
- 6:20He had them thrown into the lion's den along with their
- 6:23wives and children. The lions leapt on them and tore
- 6:27them apart before they even hit the floor of the den.
- 6:31Then Darius sent this message to the people of every race and a
- 6:35nation and language throughout the world.
- 6:39Peace and prosperity. To you.
- 6:42I decree that everyone throughout my Kingdom should
- 6:46tremble with fear before the God of Daniel, for he is the living
- 6:51God and he will endure forever. His Kingdom will never be
- 6:56destroyed and his rule will never end.
- 7:01He rescues and saves his people. He performs miraculous signs and
- 7:06wonders in the heavens and on earth.
- 7:09He has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions.
- 7:15So Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of
- 7:19Cyrus the Persian. Oh Lord, what a wonderful story
- 7:32about your faithful servant Daniel, who, through his
- 7:36continued worship of you, changes the way the whole world
- 7:41works in relation to their understanding of who the God of
- 7:45the universe is. Lord, we just don't know your
- 7:50plans. We don't know how far your
- 7:52dreams are stretching one way or the other.
- 7:56And Lord, all you call us to be is faithful in the moment, and
- 8:01you do the rest. So, Holy Spirit, continue your
- 8:06work in US of turning our stubborn human hearts always
- 8:11back to You, always in worship of You, always softened by your
- 8:16love for us so that we can be your faithful, holy people,
- 8:23always sitting by our windows, praying to you 3 times a day, or
- 8:28whatever that looks like in our lives.
- 8:31May that faithfulness just be part and parcel of who we are,
- 8:35with our identity firmly rooted. As your beloved children, Thank
- 8:42you for all that you've done, for all that you give us, but
- 8:46most of all for Jesus, in whose name we pray, all of this, Amen.
