- 2:55Speaker 1: of cinnamon and a little bit of sugar stick in

- 3:05Speaker 1: the grandma's that used to come and pick you up
- 3:07Speaker 1: for the summer and had you with them do all
- 3:11Speaker 1: the church stuff. And you didn't even go to the church,
- 3:14Speaker 1: but she made sure you were in there. All those
- 3:17Speaker 1: grandmas where you used to just go to their house
- 3:21Speaker 1: and chill and just eat the watermelon, sit on the
- 3:25Speaker 1: porch for him, help them cook. Well, guess what we
- 3:28Speaker 1: got off that at us talking about that. Her book
- 3:32Speaker 1: was called Baby Cakes and Grandma's Morning Magic. Y'all, this
- 3:38Speaker 1: is the cutest little book, you know, the old school grannies.

- 4:25Speaker 1: honored to have you on this Sunday evening. How about
- 4:29Speaker 1: you tell us a little bit about yourself.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Well, I'm a Philly girl originally from Philadelphia, born and raised.
- 4:39Speaker 4: Pretty much.
- 4:40Speaker 2: If it wasn't for Granny, you know, I wouldn't have
- 4:43Speaker 2: accomplished and did the things that I've done so far.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Currently working on my PhD.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Have an awesome platform called Black Authors Association, Authors Association,
- 4:53Speaker 2: Literacy Moments Magazine.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Because I love reading.
- 4:55Speaker 2: You know, books was from one of the things that
- 4:58Speaker 2: I was like my escape, so and it was because
- 5:01Speaker 2: of my grandmother that I fell in love.
- 5:02Speaker 1: With the book.
- 5:03Speaker 4: So that's a little bit about me. That's all simple. See.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, let me tell you all the conversation we
- 5:10Speaker 1: had behind the scenes.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Okay, is she.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Already laugh because she knows it is true. The grannies
- 5:18Speaker 1: nowadays are not like the grandma's we have back every day. Okay.
- 5:24Speaker 1: I know if my cousin e to look at my show,
- 5:26Speaker 1: she gonna box me in my right eye. But the
- 5:30Speaker 1: grannies nowadays, they don't even want you to call him granny.
- 5:33Speaker 1: So when I see someone with the grandchild, I said, okay,
- 5:38Speaker 1: what would you like them to call you? What do
- 5:40Speaker 1: they normally call you? So I've heard I have one
- 5:43Speaker 1: of my aunts. I love her.
- 5:45Speaker 4: They call her g Ma.
- 5:47Speaker 1: I have a cousin. Her name is not granny. She
- 5:49Speaker 1: gets mad when I call her granny. She's a sassy. Okay,
- 5:54Speaker 1: they are no more grannies. There's no more me malls.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Nothing like that now, and Das, we got the green
- 6:03Speaker 1: that we got the g mas sassy, the g ma
- 6:07Speaker 1: not GM's but gim. I totally understand where you coming from.
- 6:15Speaker 1: So what was the inspiration for this sport? You know?
- 6:22Speaker 2: I read so many books and then I was I
- 6:25Speaker 2: actually was at my brother's house and we were cooking,
- 6:29Speaker 2: and he was cooking cabbage and I.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Was like, okay, you got her recipe right down the back.
- 6:35Speaker 2: So my grandmother was a cook. We were spoiled were food.
- 6:41Speaker 2: And so I was talking to him about the cabbages
- 6:45Speaker 2: he was cooking. I was like, oh my goodness, you
- 6:47Speaker 2: Almo's got the recipeak correct. And so he was like,
- 6:50Speaker 2: you know what you always complain about people's food. I said, well,
- 6:55Speaker 2: I was the one in the kitchen with her, you know,
- 6:59Speaker 2: getting the little things together, the tasters, so I know
- 7:03Speaker 2: what I'm talking about.
- 7:05Speaker 5: So okay, okay, So that's what the inspiration was.
- 7:09Speaker 2: It's just like it's time to pay homage to her,
- 7:13Speaker 2: and you know the things that she taught me in
- 7:16Speaker 2: the kitchen in life, I can, it's just amazing. But
- 7:19Speaker 2: I wanted to start with the cooking part because that's
- 7:21Speaker 2: where we connected.
- 7:22Speaker 4: Every day. We connected in the kitchen.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Saving my grandma is still my grandma passed. It has
- 7:31Speaker 1: to me more than close to ten years and people
- 7:36Speaker 1: still know my Grandma for her cooking. And then they expect, oh,
- 7:41Speaker 1: your granted cook cook So I knew you can cook,
- 7:46Speaker 1: I little something in and all that.
- 7:49Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I can't listen all of it.
- 7:52Speaker 5: Some of it.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Yes, Nor asked me for nothing from memory, because I'm
- 7:58Speaker 1: gonna look on the back of that box figure out
- 8:00Speaker 1: what it says. I am forty five and I'm finally
- 8:04Speaker 1: getting macaroni cheese down packed like two years ago. But
- 8:08Speaker 1: I can fron some chicken dog down.
- 8:12Speaker 4: Chicken right. Gotta get your chicken right, Gotta be seasoned.
- 8:16Speaker 1: To the core, and do not season the flower if
- 8:20Speaker 1: you don't season the flower.
- 8:21Speaker 4: I don't want you chicken. You'll do that.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't do that. So let me ask you
- 8:25Speaker 1: a question. What is the most fondest memory you have
- 8:31Speaker 1: of your grandma?
- 8:32Speaker 3: Oh?
- 8:33Speaker 2: I think the one thing was when I was a
- 8:36Speaker 2: little girl. I used to get up in the morning
- 8:40Speaker 2: because I went I went to Catholic school, so she
- 8:43Speaker 2: used to get me up early to do some magical
- 8:46Speaker 2: things to my hair. The other think about was like
- 8:50Speaker 2: a plant here, plant like four plants, and I thought
- 8:54Speaker 2: I was the bomb. You don't probably so, but it
- 9:00Speaker 2: was like, you know, you have to you have to
- 9:02Speaker 2: eat breakfast in the morning. So I always had, you know,
- 9:05Speaker 2: the egg sandwich. And she would get on me like
- 9:08Speaker 2: her coffee. Her coffee was the best. I've never understood
- 9:11Speaker 2: how she could cook. I mean, could make coffee in
- 9:14Speaker 2: a coffee that percolates, but it was delicious.
- 9:17Speaker 4: And she was like, you need to stop drinking that coffee.
- 9:18Speaker 4: And I was like, oh, no, I can't. So it
- 9:23Speaker 4: can be her me.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Sitting in a chair, her doing my hair. I'm eating
- 9:26Speaker 2: breakfast and I had to send her coffee before I
- 9:30Speaker 2: went out, and when I went out the door before
- 9:34Speaker 2: she would say is don't forget you're blessed by the best.
- 9:38Speaker 4: That was her line.
- 9:39Speaker 2: And then she would put my head and then we
- 9:41Speaker 2: would walk out, and she did that to all of us.
- 9:43Speaker 2: She would put across in my head, you know, and
- 9:45Speaker 2: say blessed by the best. And that was like her
- 9:47Speaker 2: line for us.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Oh that's so sweet, that is so sweet.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Man.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Your grannie my granny know each other.
- 9:57Speaker 4: My grand mother was Georgia, southern to the core. To
- 10:00Speaker 4: the core.
- 10:01Speaker 1: They almost be like the plate because I had long hair. Yes,
- 10:05Speaker 1: I had long hair. One time, you guys, I kept
- 10:07Speaker 1: chopping it off. And every time I chopped my head,
- 10:10Speaker 1: my granny would get mad to the point that girl
- 10:13Speaker 1: she called me chicken bunky one day, top of.
- 10:18Speaker 6: Your heir looked like chicken booky. Let's be Oh god,
- 10:21Speaker 6: that's just her, my heart. But then she rub her head,
- 10:28Speaker 6: my head top of chicken. Both guess it's me. Just
- 10:31Speaker 6: call my hair chicken book She's hated, she hated when
- 10:35Speaker 6: we got out of his and I'm like, what you're.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Saying, But your grandma is bringing back crazy memories of
- 10:42Speaker 1: my grandma. It's it's crazy. So the illustrations in your book,
- 10:54Speaker 1: these illustrations are along overdue to come back. And the
- 11:01Speaker 1: reason why I say that is because most of the
- 11:03Speaker 1: book covers now for kids, they don't have that warm
- 11:09Speaker 1: feel like yours has. It's one of those books where
- 11:13Speaker 1: you would want to give you want to give this
- 11:19Speaker 1: as a gift to the grandmother at the baby shower.
- 11:24Speaker 1: You know what made you want to go with this
- 11:26Speaker 1: stuff of illustration? Oh?
- 11:30Speaker 4: You know, it took me a.
- 11:31Speaker 2: While and I was like, okay, what was the color
- 11:33Speaker 2: of things that I remember so vividly about my grandmother.
- 11:37Speaker 2: She had to have an apron on in the kitchen
- 11:39Speaker 2: that was like it was like hanging up and a
- 11:41Speaker 2: certain spot every day.
- 11:44Speaker 4: And even though she you know, her hair was gray
- 11:47Speaker 4: and she had.
- 11:47Speaker 5: Wore glasses, she's a little sasy. She had her had
- 11:49Speaker 5: had a little perfect.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Ear rings on.
- 11:52Speaker 2: So that was one of the other things. I was
- 11:53Speaker 2: like this, you know, she had a little sassy that's
- 11:55Speaker 2: about her as well. But it was like the apron
- 11:58Speaker 2: and just you know, well meat, no matter what. But
- 12:03Speaker 2: you know, I also wanted to make sure that it
- 12:07Speaker 2: was look look close to her as well. But also,
- 12:12Speaker 2: like you said, gave that warm feel like we are
- 12:15Speaker 2: having fun in the kitchen. You know that was my
- 12:18Speaker 2: messed up ponytail. So it was just throw it in
- 12:25Speaker 2: a ponytail.
- 12:26Speaker 4: But I just wanted the one. It would be fun
- 12:29Speaker 4: but also give a little sass to it. And that's
- 12:32Speaker 4: what I've made sure. I said. She always had earrings
- 12:35Speaker 4: and a ring on her finger, but she had had
- 12:37Speaker 4: that apron on. She was not cooking in the kitchen
- 12:39Speaker 4: with out an apron on.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Oh my god. So now tell us a little bit
- 12:43Speaker 1: about the book.
- 12:45Speaker 2: It basically talks about how you know it's actually a
- 12:48Speaker 2: serious This one is our first, my first one, and
- 12:51Speaker 2: talks about us making breakfast. My grandmother was known for
- 12:55Speaker 2: making cheese and rice. That was like her signature dish.
- 12:58Speaker 2: But also, you know, pancakes. Whenever she made pancakes, everybody
- 13:02Speaker 2: would come over. So that was like a special thing.
- 13:06Speaker 2: But like I said before, you know, whenever she made
- 13:09Speaker 2: anything in the kitchen, you know, it was like always
- 13:12Speaker 2: Kim tasted. Let me know what I'm missing over Kim?
- 13:14Speaker 4: What do you think?
- 13:15Speaker 2: So I was that person, you know, tasting everything when
- 13:18Speaker 2: she makes peo potato pots. I had the bowl because
- 13:21Speaker 2: it was mine, you know, So.
- 13:26Speaker 4: You know I had the bowl. You know, she laid
- 13:28Speaker 4: the cakes.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Yeah, So you know, I just wanted to take a
- 13:32Speaker 2: piece of one of our time together and put it
- 13:36Speaker 2: in a book. There were so many, but the breakfast
- 13:39Speaker 2: part was always my favorite. And you know it also
- 13:44Speaker 2: brought my family together. Whenever everyone knew she was cooking breakfast,
- 13:48Speaker 2: they would come over no matter what. And at the
- 13:51Speaker 2: same time, she she had like she knew, you know,
- 13:56Speaker 2: how to kind of love us in our own way,
- 13:59Speaker 2: like she like, you know, this person was coming over
- 14:01Speaker 2: at one o'clock, his plate was here. You know this
- 14:04Speaker 2: person didn't eat this. Let me put this plate together
- 14:06Speaker 2: over here. So you know, breaference was a really great
- 14:10Speaker 2: time for our family.
- 14:12Speaker 1: See you, guys, I said the breakfast. I remember my
- 14:16Speaker 1: family would do Sunday dinners always, thanks Giving, any holiday.
- 14:25Speaker 1: It was just ridiculous. It didn't make no sense.
- 14:29Speaker 4: Holiday is how many pieces?
- 14:31Speaker 1: I ham? This ham, that ham, black hand, blue hamd
- 14:36Speaker 1: this was how many pieces? It was ridiculous. But I
- 14:42Speaker 1: am remembering something that I saw on TikTok today and
- 14:46Speaker 1: I'm asking you this question. There was a young man
- 14:49Speaker 1: and he was saying that family is just not family anymore.
- 14:54Speaker 1: And that's why I so much adored this book because
- 14:59Speaker 1: This is where I I felt after this generation of
- 15:04Speaker 1: the grandma's, they're leaving this earth, seems like that mantle
- 15:10Speaker 1: was going with them. Do you feel the same way.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Our family went through that a lot, you know when
- 15:18Speaker 2: she passed away, because we wasn't sure who would pick
- 15:23Speaker 2: up that mantle, and it took you know, and we
- 15:27Speaker 2: were like when we are like five generations strong, so
- 15:31Speaker 2: it's like, you know, what do we do next? And
- 15:34Speaker 2: then we realized that, you know, we have to do something,
- 15:38Speaker 2: so we did something, you know, just little small things
- 15:40Speaker 2: to kind of bring us back together. But it was
- 15:43Speaker 2: and you felt the loss, but I think it also
- 15:46Speaker 2: was us all grieving in our own way, and then
- 15:51Speaker 2: you know, trying to figure out what do we do next,
- 15:54Speaker 2: because again she loved us in our own special way,
- 15:58Speaker 2: and when that was like a peace, we were trying
- 16:01Speaker 2: to figure out what we do next. I mean, honestly,
- 16:04Speaker 2: it took me a while to go back to my
- 16:06Speaker 2: grandmother's house and I moved because I was just like,
- 16:12Speaker 2: because you know, she had been in our lives so
- 16:14Speaker 2: much eighty four years, you know, we.
- 16:16Speaker 4: Would spoiling whatever.
- 16:18Speaker 2: So I think a lot of it was, you know,
- 16:20Speaker 2: you don't go through the grieving process and as people,
- 16:24Speaker 2: we don't realize it's okay to get help through the
- 16:27Speaker 2: grieving process as well. And then once you go through
- 16:30Speaker 2: that grieving process, putting the pieces back together to build
- 16:34Speaker 2: that strong foundation that you have. And we're like us,
- 16:37Speaker 2: like I said, our family is there now. And we
- 16:38Speaker 2: started something small like a group chat and it turned
- 16:41Speaker 2: out to be the best thing ever, sharing birthday, sharing pictures,
- 16:45Speaker 2: communicating with each other. But it's you know, that one
- 16:48Speaker 2: little thing brought us back together, a simple group chat,
- 16:52Speaker 2: even showing the elders how to use you know, all
- 16:55Speaker 2: the elders got there, so showing up how to use
- 16:58Speaker 2: the chat as well. But it's just that, won't.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Baby get you noise what's going on?
- 17:13Speaker 4: Turn this thing off? But not being lose you're in trouble.
- 17:17Speaker 1: You ain't got me to that. Yes, yes, and so
- 17:22Speaker 1: I do understand that. I mean my family we do
- 17:25Speaker 1: small things, like our biggest thing is Christmas at my
- 17:29Speaker 1: Aunt Jackies. That's one of the biggest things. Sometimes somebody
- 17:35Speaker 1: we had the Grinch one time. One year, we had
- 17:38Speaker 1: Santa Claus one year. It's yes, there's kids, yo. When
- 17:42Speaker 1: the Grinch came through. I never seen kids run so
- 17:45Speaker 1: fast before.
- 17:47Speaker 4: One kid was running down the street.
- 17:49Speaker 1: It was like catching So I do understand that, and
- 17:54Speaker 1: I'm one of these things. I'm hoping that that the
- 17:58Speaker 1: African American community can get back too that I would
- 18:03Speaker 1: love to get back to that. So now I heard
- 18:07Speaker 1: you say that this is the first book in the series.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Can we get a little bit of what Granny about
- 18:15Speaker 1: to do next? Oh, Granny is gonna take me down
- 18:18Speaker 1: south to Georgia in the country for the summer time.
- 18:27Speaker 2: I'm gonna spend the summer with her in the country
- 18:31Speaker 2: and do some things on the farm.
- 18:35Speaker 4: Yo, y'all should bring it back all kind of memories.
- 18:40Speaker 1: The things that I used to do from the street
- 18:45Speaker 1: in the summer.
- 18:46Speaker 5: From getting the chickens out of the chicken coop to
- 18:48Speaker 5: go I'm picking some peaches.
- 18:50Speaker 4: Yeah, we're gonna go through that process.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Man looking here, Well, why wasn't in the country. I
- 18:58Speaker 1: was in the city. Things that I hoo Jesus, things
- 19:06Speaker 1: that I did. I just hoped then and had them
- 19:10Speaker 1: having a conversation, because Lord, when I get up there.
- 19:17Speaker 1: So who is your target audience for Baby Cakes and
- 19:21Speaker 1: Grandma's Morning Magic.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Honestly, it's for I really wrote it for the KO three,
- 19:28Speaker 2: but also those honestly adults that mister grandma, you know,
- 19:36Speaker 2: just to bring them back to have some good memories.
- 19:39Speaker 2: And so surprisingly, I've had some adults like like you did,
- 19:44Speaker 2: I remember that for real? And it puts a smile
- 19:47Speaker 2: on their face.
- 19:48Speaker 4: And that's what I want.
- 19:49Speaker 2: That's what I really really want, just to bring back
- 19:52Speaker 2: some happy memories and make you have a good day
- 19:55Speaker 2: with a good smile.
- 19:56Speaker 4: That's all.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Yes, And you know what that is awesomely true because
- 20:01Speaker 1: my daughter has a video of her grandma, oh her
- 20:05Speaker 1: talking trash to her grandma, like she was trying to
- 20:07Speaker 1: get her to eat, and my daughter was telling her, no, no, no, no,
- 20:10Speaker 1: I don't want that, and she every time she missed
- 20:13Speaker 1: her grandma, she goes to her phone and she plays
- 20:15Speaker 1: that video. I'm so happy that she had that little
- 20:21Speaker 1: bit of time with her grandma. And then to be
- 20:23Speaker 1: the only girl. Oh yeah, yes, yes, So we're gonna
- 20:29Speaker 1: step it up early for some fun questions. Okay again,
- 20:36Speaker 1: So what was the nickname that your grandma gave you?
- 20:41Speaker 1: And why did she give you that nickname?
- 20:45Speaker 5: It was Babycakes? And oh, I don't know what, I
- 20:49Speaker 5: never know what it meant, babycakes? And I'm like, babycake.
- 20:57Speaker 5: Oh I don't I called me baby cakes. She was
- 21:02Speaker 5: and still to today, said hey, baby cakes, how you
- 21:04Speaker 5: doing it?
- 21:05Speaker 4: I'm like, I don't know what it means, but I like.
- 21:07Speaker 1: The way it sounds. Oh man, so that is so cute.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Now you're gonna laugh because I'm gonna answer that question.
- 21:17Speaker 1: When I do the fun questions, I also answer them too, y'all.
- 21:23Speaker 1: This is not insulting. Okay, my granny used to call
- 21:27Speaker 1: us dumb behind, but what you're dumb behind? And then
- 21:32Speaker 1: she was dumb you're dumb behind. It's like you, Granny, like, seriously,
- 21:44Speaker 1: what you do? But then she also had each one
- 21:47Speaker 1: of us had our own bowl nickname was mine was
- 21:49Speaker 1: Tracy or Frenchy. So that's why I sad that question,
- 21:55Speaker 1: because granted, they used to give us some crazy means
- 21:58Speaker 1: back in the day, everybody had a crazy name. Back
- 22:01Speaker 1: in the day, everybody had I thought the means to
- 22:04Speaker 1: deem it crazy. But when you look back then, yeah,
- 22:09Speaker 1: all right, that little girl in the picture, is you
- 22:12Speaker 1: correct close to it?
- 22:16Speaker 3: Well?
- 22:17Speaker 1: Guess what they want to cast her in the movie
- 22:23Speaker 1: Baby Cakes and Grandma's Morning Magic. For the up channel
- 22:30Speaker 1: where they do all the little family dramas. Who childhood
- 22:35Speaker 1: actor actress? I'm sorry, it's going to play you? And
- 22:39Speaker 1: why then?
- 22:41Speaker 2: Oh wow, I would say the young Kiky Palmer like
- 22:50Speaker 2: from when you play in what's the spelling b movie?
- 22:55Speaker 2: Killing a Bee?
- 22:59Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I remember that one. Yeah, So why Palmer
- 23:14Speaker 1: at that age?
- 23:15Speaker 2: Because one she was inquisitive, but she still was very nice,
- 23:21Speaker 2: well mannered, knew that mama didn't play, and she basted
- 23:27Speaker 2: with her mother.
- 23:28Speaker 4: She knew how Mama did play, but she still wanted
- 23:32Speaker 4: to do things. But she was like, I'm gonna do it.
- 23:35Speaker 4: I'll just get in trouble later.
- 23:36Speaker 2: I was that way too, and I always had like
- 23:41Speaker 2: that best friend like don't tell nobody, Like ain't gonna okay.
- 23:46Speaker 1: I ain't gonna tell nobody. Next morning, the girl let
- 23:49Speaker 1: me tell you what she did.
- 23:53Speaker 4: So, yeah, I had a little bit mad than me.
- 23:57Speaker 1: All right, So we already have Kekey Palmer. So who
- 24:01Speaker 1: would play grandma? And why they get that on it?
- 24:06Speaker 2: The grandmother from Soul Food was the closest to my grandmother. Man,
- 24:12Speaker 2: every time I look at that movie, I tear like,
- 24:15Speaker 2: oh my goodness, ye had I remember that degreen.
- 24:17Speaker 4: You know that whole process of making that meal. Yeah,
- 24:21Speaker 4: that was that was my man.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Oh my goodness. Okay, see you I went there, You
- 24:31Speaker 1: went there, You went there because now I'm thinking, man,
- 24:36Speaker 1: I might have to do a Sunday dinner next week.
- 24:41Speaker 1: But guess what I got too, nephews who can't take
- 24:45Speaker 1: food right now.
- 24:46Speaker 4: So it's all good.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Cabbages and chicken is every Sunday dinner. That's how signature
- 24:53Speaker 2: Sunday dinner for our family.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Okay, so tell us what was on the menu for
- 24:58Speaker 1: a signature Sunday dinner at your Well.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Of course, she cooked breakfast and everybody either before church
- 25:05Speaker 2: after church, came got your breakfast. But it was just
- 25:08Speaker 2: really weird because at breakfast, if you wasn't coming back
- 25:12Speaker 2: the dinner, your dinner was ready.
- 25:13Speaker 4: No one had to cook Sunday dinner in our family,
- 25:16Speaker 4: no one.
- 25:17Speaker 2: You could come and get some cabbages, baked or fried, chicken,
- 25:21Speaker 2: some corn bread, either some hams or potato salad, depending
- 25:25Speaker 2: on how she felt. But you did not have to
- 25:28Speaker 2: worry about cooking Sunday dinner ever. And the summertime she
- 25:32Speaker 2: would do like this cream corn.
- 25:33Speaker 3: It was so good.
- 25:35Speaker 2: But every Sunday. It was ready either we ate breakfast
- 25:42Speaker 2: or if you came back to church. But the cabbages always,
- 25:46Speaker 2: always cabbages, always cabbages.
- 25:49Speaker 4: Yeah good. She even won to award for her cabbages.
- 25:53Speaker 4: That's how good they were.
- 25:55Speaker 1: What we con gradually?
- 25:59Speaker 4: Why do we say?
- 26:00Speaker 1: Can I hear your grandma's first last night? Her name
- 26:03Speaker 1: was Mary Oglesby, Miss Mary, Oh, miss mird. It was
- 26:11Speaker 1: merry here, I can get some of your cabbage. Okay,
- 26:14Speaker 1: I'm a factor like hard. I ain't got no problem
- 26:16Speaker 1: say that hungry with each of you, I got no problem.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Don't don't tell me to come and eat some dinner,
- 26:24Speaker 1: because I come and I'm be right there.
- 26:26Speaker 4: She wasn't gonna let you leave lest you ate anyway.
- 26:29Speaker 4: You gotta have something when you walk in the door.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Talking about So let me ask you a question. Did
- 26:36Speaker 1: your granny cook on Sunday or did she cook Saturday afternoon?
- 26:40Speaker 2: She prepped on Saturday, but everything was cooked by seven
- 26:45Speaker 2: or eight o'clock in the morning on Sunday.
- 26:48Speaker 1: So she was one of the grannies that got up
- 26:50Speaker 1: at the crack of dawn and started cooking everything. Are
- 26:54Speaker 1: you trying to sleep in all years?
- 26:56Speaker 4: Clin yes or smell or something.
- 27:01Speaker 1: Or okay. So with my mother's mom my Granny Bingie,
- 27:06Speaker 1: I would hear James Cleveland more, Charley Caesar. Yes, my
- 27:12Speaker 1: mother Granny, I would hear, uh, what's that? She was
- 27:18Speaker 1: big into the choir things, so she not John py King,
- 27:21Speaker 1: but them old old school Mississippi mass choir. I remember
- 27:28Speaker 1: one time we went to the club. We came back
- 27:33Speaker 1: and it's like maybe two three hours later, she been
- 27:35Speaker 1: in the kitchen cooking. I'll never forget. Somebody went in
- 27:39Speaker 1: the kitchen and they gave her that little boy. The
- 27:44Speaker 1: rest of us saying we were sleeping. We get home
- 27:46Speaker 1: from church when we ain't trying to go to that.
- 27:49Speaker 4: Because they got the lashing.
- 27:52Speaker 1: I was like, dang, how you walk out of that one?
- 27:55Speaker 1: But what would you say to readers that have these
- 28:07Speaker 1: wonderful memories of their grandmas? What would you say to
- 28:12Speaker 1: them how they can capture those memories? What would you
- 28:17Speaker 1: say for all those memories? What would you tell the
- 28:20Speaker 1: reader to do with that those memories?
- 28:23Speaker 2: I would actually tell them, make sure you write it
- 28:25Speaker 2: down and also gather some pictures and create a collage
- 28:29Speaker 2: for yourself. That's one of the things we started doing,
- 28:34Speaker 2: you know when unfortunately when people passed away, we would
- 28:37Speaker 2: always kind of figure out, well, where's the pictures?
- 28:39Speaker 4: Who had to picture books? And that was one of
- 28:41Speaker 4: the things I was glad our family did.
- 28:43Speaker 2: We took a lot of pictures, so we were able
- 28:45Speaker 2: to kind of pull things together.
- 28:48Speaker 4: But I would tell them write it down, you know.
- 28:50Speaker 2: When before my grandmother got a little sick, I actually
- 28:52Speaker 2: recorded some things from her as well, so that was
- 28:56Speaker 2: that's one of the things, and that was one of
- 28:58Speaker 2: the things that kind of helped a lot of our family,
- 29:00Speaker 2: my mom and her sisters and brothers hill because.
- 29:03Speaker 4: They need to hear her voice.
- 29:05Speaker 2: But also the pictures we you know, kind of put
- 29:09Speaker 2: together collages and also it was a fun time like
- 29:12Speaker 2: who is that that picture?
- 29:14Speaker 1: What they doing?
- 29:16Speaker 2: And so some of the things that kind of got
- 29:18Speaker 2: our family together as well, because we talked about those memories.
- 29:23Speaker 4: And I am the oldest grandchild and.
- 29:25Speaker 2: Then there's more grandchildren nine years later, so I know
- 29:29Speaker 2: a lot of things that they don't know or seen
- 29:32Speaker 2: or met a lot of our family that they don't know,
- 29:34Speaker 2: so that you too. So you know, those pictures helped
- 29:39Speaker 2: me tell stories about the family that they didn't meet
- 29:42Speaker 2: or didn't know, and things of that sort. So I
- 29:44Speaker 2: definitely would tell them take pictures, don't don't sleep on pictures.
- 29:49Speaker 2: They last a long time. But also write things, writ things.
- 29:54Speaker 1: Yes, you're so right writing things down. I never thought
- 29:58Speaker 1: about that. I think that's what I'm gonna do. I mean,
- 30:02Speaker 1: my mother is no longer here, and I ain't got
- 30:07Speaker 1: no grandkids. You better not giving none either. But I
- 30:12Speaker 1: do have aunts, and I do have this one, aren't
- 30:14Speaker 1: we really kind of she kind of stepped in as
- 30:17Speaker 1: that grandmother. So I never thought about doing that. Now.
- 30:20Speaker 1: The pictures, Yeah, there's some incriminating pictures, all right, everybody
- 30:31Speaker 1: got that what is that the burkeny pitcher from back
- 30:36Speaker 1: in the day.
- 30:37Speaker 4: Yeah, you had your diaper on, looking crazy as yet
- 30:44Speaker 4: and they got to carry you like.
- 30:46Speaker 1: This pictures I totally understand. So you guys, you know,
- 30:56Speaker 1: take that hand, make those memories, take those pictures, because
- 31:00Speaker 1: who knows how long we have on this earth that
- 31:03Speaker 1: we really do need to enjoy ourselves and our family
- 31:07Speaker 1: and keep that generation generational information. We shouldn't have to
- 31:13Speaker 1: try to go back and find this person and how
- 31:17Speaker 1: that person was to this person. It should be easy
- 31:20Speaker 1: we really do, especially my generation in the generations to come,
- 31:25Speaker 1: I think they kind of lost that link. So let's
- 31:27Speaker 1: go ahead and try to build that link back together.
- 31:31Speaker 1: But we are getting close to the end, but before
- 31:33Speaker 1: we go, we need to rundown. We need to see
- 31:37Speaker 1: find out where we can get baby cakes and Grandma's
- 31:40Speaker 1: Morning Magic, how we could follow you. I understand that
- 31:44Speaker 1: you have an author community, tell us a little bit
- 31:48Speaker 1: about that. Just go ahead and give us a rundown.
- 31:51Speaker 2: Okay, Well, you can definitely get the order to book
- 31:54Speaker 2: from off our website. It's just simply my name kim
- 31:57Speaker 2: Ogilsby dot com or my Instagram which is Beach Girls
- 32:02Speaker 2: pr And also I actually am the founder of the
- 32:06Speaker 2: Black Authors Association, so you know, always find me on
- 32:10Speaker 2: there helping some authors as well making sure they post
- 32:15Speaker 2: their books. My thing is, you know, we as a
- 32:18Speaker 2: black and brown pew that have written some great books,
- 32:21Speaker 2: so I want to make sure everyone knows that. So
- 32:24Speaker 2: that's one of the things that Black Authors Association definitely promotes.
- 32:27Speaker 2: And also we have I have Literacy Moments magazine and
- 32:30Speaker 2: that pretty much is a magazine at Spotlight's authors so
- 32:34Speaker 2: that we can get into schools, libraries, and bookstores and
- 32:37Speaker 2: all that great stuff. So it also helps those inspiring
- 32:41Speaker 2: authors get some tips and timbits on how to get started,
- 32:44Speaker 2: because I know the author journey it can be difficult
- 32:48Speaker 2: and just not knowing.
- 32:49Speaker 4: How to start.
- 32:49Speaker 2: You know, you may need that one that community or
- 32:52Speaker 2: just something a reading resource. So that's why we had
- 32:54Speaker 2: literally wellness. So but one other thing I just want
- 32:59Speaker 2: to say. You know, one of the that we do
- 33:00Speaker 2: every year, which is coming up this weekend, My grandmother
- 33:04Speaker 2: used to feed the community on her birthday. She used
- 33:06Speaker 2: to speed about two hundred people, and since she's been gone,
- 33:09Speaker 2: we actually do that. So this weekend we are is
- 33:12Speaker 2: her Her birthday is on the twenty fifth of July,
- 33:15Speaker 2: and on that Saturday, we actually feed the community in
- 33:19Speaker 2: Philadelphia where she used.
- 33:20Speaker 4: To live at.
- 33:21Speaker 2: And you can't miss it because we were able to
- 33:23Speaker 2: get the street where she lived at named after her.
- 33:26Speaker 2: So those little things that we did to honor her
- 33:29Speaker 2: because she was a pillar of the community, and we
- 33:32Speaker 2: actually have kept that tradition going because she was she
- 33:37Speaker 2: was she was mom, she.
- 33:38Speaker 1: Was a person. Well, make sure you send me some
- 33:42Speaker 1: information so I could share it out to everyone that
- 33:44Speaker 1: I know, and y'all go out there and support. You know,
- 33:48Speaker 1: there's there the the times that we're in y'all, the
- 33:54Speaker 1: need is there.
- 33:55Speaker 4: Yeah, so all we have to do is.
- 33:57Speaker 1: Show up and meet the need. Yeah. I always tell
- 34:00Speaker 1: people put the question and the answer together. Okay, So
- 34:06Speaker 1: I thank you for joining me. You Downe brought back
- 34:09Speaker 1: all these memories. Now I'm about to go find some
- 34:12Speaker 1: of my baby pictures. I might post them up online.
- 34:18Speaker 1: There is one picture my uncle have me and my cousin.
- 34:22Speaker 1: I'm gonna say her name.
- 34:23Speaker 3: She could be me.
- 34:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna say her nickname Danky. Okay, yeah, like Danky.
- 34:30Speaker 1: You know, we gotta we gotta put you both of
- 34:33Speaker 1: us back in the day because I was the oldest
- 34:36Speaker 1: and she came three months after. She could have let
- 34:38Speaker 1: me keep my giant, but she came three months after.
- 34:42Speaker 1: We have a picture with our uncle Mark and Lord
- 34:45Speaker 1: that puture. Every time I look at that picture, I said, man, why,
- 34:48Speaker 1: just just why y'all just had to snap that, didn't you.
- 34:52Speaker 4: He's quite smiling from her air.
- 34:56Speaker 1: I think that putok lost. But he had the two
- 35:02Speaker 1: girls with him. He was smiling.
- 35:04Speaker 4: It is because.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Our uncle, Oh, our uncles don't play but us.
- 35:13Speaker 4: He just sat out there, he's smiling. It is and
- 35:16Speaker 4: just like, what is it.
- 35:17Speaker 1: I'm gonna find y'all. I'm gonna find that picture. I
- 35:20Speaker 1: know who got that picture. I'm gonna find that picture.
- 35:23Speaker 1: But thankk you for bringing these beautiful memories and helping
- 35:28Speaker 1: us to develop these memories with our kids, our future kids,
- 35:33Speaker 1: future generations. You guys, go out there and get baby
- 35:37Speaker 1: Cakes and Grandma's Morning Magic off her website. You see
- 35:42Speaker 1: it's scrolling at the bottom. That makes a perfect gift
- 35:46Speaker 1: for the grandma to be or grandma's in general, to
- 35:51Speaker 1: take that book and read to their kids, their grandkids.
- 35:55Speaker 1: I wouldn't even say it for the holidays. I'll just
