- 2:27in the show, Dana Farrell. That'll get Dana Ferrell is going to join
- 2:30us, and Dana's got a couple of things he wants to talk about,
- 2:32one of which is this proposed recreational park for the Kadaga Valley are He's going
- 2:38to talk about that. Plus, you know, Dana is a big high
- 2:39school sports guy, so we're going to talk not about the on the field
- 2:43stuff, but more the off field stuffs as it pertains to the transfer rule
- 2:46what I call the transfer portal, which is what it's basically become in high
- 2:50school sports. Dana's going to talk about that plus State Democratic Party chair and
- 2:53Delli get Mike Pushkin a little later on in the show, the I describe
- 2:58this guy that I'm bringing in first as the always entertaining because he is he
- 3:00always entertaining. Rob Cornelius, how are you man? I appreciate Dave good
- 3:05to be back a couple months. We're gving a good time. You're driving
- 3:07all around stake, you're going away gas. That's that's about seventeen hundred bucks.
- 3:10I mean someone's getting at ten ninety nine. But it's worth it.
- 3:14Well, you know, it's um, it's it's fun life, this life
- 3:17that I lead. You're having a glass and Marriott is like one of my
- 3:21hometowns when I'm not in West Virginia, so you're welcome at all times.
- 3:23I think we've spent a lot of restaurants and well, you know, I'm
- 3:27a big fan of the Galley. I'm old enough to call it the adventure
- 3:29Galley. That's what it was the time nineties. And also the boathouse that's
- 3:34good that works in over and harmor Scenic Virginia's three neighborhood yeah, so it's
- 3:37a beautiful you ever had a chance to go up to Marryatta? All right,
- 3:39so what have you been up to last time? Well, let me
- 3:42last time I had yawn if I remember quickly, you had been at war
- 3:45at least a part partly with a few members of the Republican Party in West
- 3:49Virginia. Well, I mean that four year process. Supreme Court finally swept
- 3:53that dealt with that dismissed the bad guys. I guess I was back in
- 3:57April we last talked on air, and we've won that. Now we're just
- 4:00going through the legal match nations and making sure they follow the original court order
- 4:04from Judge Tabbott here in Charleston, which here before they have not, and
- 4:09pursuing other legal possibilities. Beyond that, there's a lot of bad things that
- 4:12happened. A lot of civil rights are violated for a lot of voters in
- 4:15Wood County and around the state, and some folks need to be correct in
- 4:19their actions. So we will work in that right now with our council with
- 4:23basically getting everything back to where it was and making sure the state Republican Party
- 4:26behaves lawfully, which has been an issue for the last four plus years,
- 4:29they just ignore state code. So for people that weren't listening to that,
- 4:33what exactly was the A lot oflmost spent a lot of time to all on
- 4:35this, but what exactly was the story here? Long story short. I'm
- 4:39too aggressive and too conservative for the state Republican Party, or at least I
- 4:42was four years ago. I called the leader said party a few things that
- 4:45were mean but true. She then proceeded to yes and proceed to throw me,
- 4:50try to throw me off the state committee in violation state law. She
- 4:54tried to cancel an election, and the Secretary of State went along with that,
- 4:58and they did, and I was removed essentially for my free speech against
- 5:01her and the governor and various others. And nowhere in law could you do
- 5:05that? Courts agreed. Four years later, here we are, So we
- 5:09figured that out. We knew we were right, we knew the First Amendments
- 5:12still exists in America, and I'm pretty good at the first Amendment. So
- 5:14boom, we win. And so where is it now? Is? I
- 5:16mean, you won, but we won? But no, they have they
- 5:19have not obeyed the court order. They're obviously going to owe my counsel his
- 5:25bill for this case. They kept appealing and appealing and we don't wait to
- 5:29Supreme Court and lost. So that's gonna be pretty substantial and more important,
- 5:32they need to go back and do the things a court ordered them to do,
- 5:36which is obviously they reinstated me sort of, but also they need to
- 5:40make changes in their by laws to not break state law. Essentially, long
- 5:44story short, because they had bad attorneys and bad legal advice, the state
- 5:48Party of West Virginia publican party said we don't have to follow a state law,
- 5:51it doesn't apply to us. We can do whatever we want. That
- 5:55was clearly wrong, and now we're going to have the results of that.
- 5:58For me, you know, it's just getting back. I still do political
- 6:00consulting, I still work on campaigns, I still work in pr all the
- 6:03stuff I used to and all the stuff I've done. And you know,
- 6:05I've considered running for things we talked about the last time i's here. We'll
- 6:09keep considering on that note, but I'm going to continue be very political and
- 6:13be very very involved in our state's races. On that note, Yeah,
- 6:16heard rumors that you may be looking at the state wide office. Do you
- 6:19care to talk about that? You know the best state wide office that's open
- 6:25that has the most enforcement, the most ability to do good in state government.
- 6:28I think the state auditors race, and that's moved around obviously. JB
- 6:30was in for governor until a couple days ago and now is in for attorney
- 6:35general, which ironically you can be a non attorney and run for attorney general.
- 6:40I think someone should do that. This is like a comedy thing.
- 6:42But the auditors office is has the ability to investigate almost anything the state government,
- 6:48and that is really really appealing to me as someone who likes to absolutely
- 6:54break faces and bust corrupt politicians period, whether you're stealing money, whether you're
- 6:59sleeping with your girlfriend and work on tax prays. We're having to pay for
- 7:00it. There's a lot of bad syth that goes down in the state.
- 7:03And with the billions of dollars have come flying in and COVID money, Brideband,
- 7:08all these things, people are going to steal again. And JB has
- 7:10done a good job opening things up with a check book and that office public
- 7:14Integrity, making sure that people who are bad get in trouble and go to
- 7:16jail. But if I were at it or we would set the record for
- 7:20public officials we put in jail gladly. Very few people and again we're talking
- 7:26Rob Cornelius. Rob. Very few people have had an issue with the way
- 7:29that Jab mccusky has. He's a long time friend. My mom baby sat
- 7:33his dad in the fifties and Clarksburg, like I've known these people forever.
- 7:38He Wendy used to work with us on campaigns twenty years ago. His wife.
- 7:42That's a good family. He did a good job. If he wants
- 7:44to move up and out, good for him. But he's done a great
- 7:46job that office. And frankly, that's I think a lot of folks had
- 7:48consternation about this, thinking he might he might be coming back to it because
- 7:53he did such a good job. Hired some people around states, around the
- 7:57state that said that they I mean, with all due respect to Jab,
- 8:00they wanted him to stay as auditor because they thought he did a good job.
- 8:03It's the same thing, by oddly enough, about Patrick Morrissey, Attorney
- 8:05General. I heard the same thing about Macwarner Secretary. I agreed. People
- 8:09don't have a real beef with those guys and Kent lean hard don't forget about
- 8:13them. It's funny in West Virginia, you can win an office and stay
- 8:16in it ostensibly forever. Now you do a lot of your business in Ohio.
- 8:20I live on the Ohio border. In Ohio, it's different. Everybody's
- 8:22term limit, which everybody says they want, we want term limits for everybody.
- 8:26But what happens is then the same six people just rotate through their state
- 8:31office. If they have a little meeting, they say, well, I'll
- 8:31be sec state the next eight years. And so literally in Ohio it's so
- 8:37rarely chained as you so rarely break up that board structure, and that the
- 8:41state House and Senate worked the same way eight years and either got to go
- 8:43up with the state Senate or got to take a break because you can come
- 8:46back later in your life. But it's very, very regimented, and there's
- 8:48a very strong state party instead of adults that tell you you're going here this
- 8:52time, you're going here this time, you're disappearing for four years. So
- 8:56you kind of dropped that there a little bit that may be considering a run
- 9:01for state auditor. Yeah, and and my issue is, you know,
- 9:03I'm I filed an open committee to run for whatever I've done it the last
- 9:07three cycles just to have it available to you in case, in case it
- 9:11happens. Rally is like you have a day job, and I'm not going
- 9:13to make any decisions that affect this until essentially the end of the year.
- 9:16I have I announced sports in another state, and I've done it for twenty
- 9:20years, and I'm not going to do anything that jeopardizes that or changes that
- 9:24until at least the end of my football season. And my employer knows that,
- 9:28and I think everyone everyone knows that. But I'm gonna be in involved
- 9:31in Western politics the next four months, next four years as I've been,
- 9:35and that means I'm gonna keep pressing on things. I mean, there's things
- 9:37we're working on investigating right now. You know, I've got I've got a
- 9:39vote buying thing I'm working on in Logan County. A bunch of guys you
- 9:41probably know Dave work on that for quite a while. I know it sounds
- 9:46shockings Republicans this time, but there there are things going on. I've always
- 9:50got my my hand in the past someplace, and uh, we're gonna,
- 9:54you know, break some people in public I think just for sport, okay,
- 9:56and problem Corneli uses with us, So I do know that I think
- 10:01Caleb Hannah Delia Caleb Hannah had announced that he's going to run for I've known
- 10:05Caleb for a long time, and I've also heard the name Mary Nelson being
- 10:07run out there. I've heard the name that means that's certainly a guy from
- 10:11Charleston who can run. Look the deal with with these these down ticket offices
- 10:16is this, unless you are individually famous or individually wealthy and can just cut
- 10:20the check for it, everybody starts at effectively zero. And I think that's
- 10:24what Frankly, Jabie mccusky and and well and others are learning this second.
- 10:28Even if you've been in office six, eight, ten years or whatever,
- 10:31unless you've had a reason something big has happened to be in the front page
- 10:35where you had a real competitive campaign, we you spend a million and more
- 10:37dollars, nobody has any idea who you are. So geography is critical for
- 10:43Caleb. The hard part is he's from I think one of the smallest counties
- 10:46in the state of rural area that doesn't bring votes. The ideal candidate for
- 10:48any office right now is generic Republican from eastern Hanhandle that brings you the biggest
- 10:54packet of primary votes next year. So that's a dangerous person in any race.
- 11:00Being from Webster Nicholas is hard. Being from Word is hard. No
- 11:03one's ever going to look like the statewide from Calhoun County. Again, there's
- 11:05a lot of things like that. So geography is super critical because either people
- 11:09will know you from your media market and it's one of the big media markets,
- 11:11or you're buried and then you've got to buy your way on. You've
- 11:13got to find that million bucks. Yeah, and that's what we're finding right
- 11:16now. I mean with with jab and some of these other people that are
- 11:20running for governor. It all comes down to dollars and saying here is a
- 11:22hard truth for people. I know, all these people in state government that
- 11:24I talk to, campaigns I run and deal with all the time. You
- 11:28guys think everybody knows you, you go to the right church. You think
- 11:31you're in rotary. Everyone knows you because your dad is a baseball umpire fore
- 11:33hundred years no no one has any of you who you are, and they
- 11:35don't care. If you're below the governor or US Senate level. You are
- 11:39lucky for your name. Idea is twenty percent and that applies to all politicians
- 11:43good luck. I mean, imagine how much KNT Carper's name idea has dropped
- 11:46for that lady not to know who he was. I see that's a joke.
- 11:50I slipt that in I got it. I'm asking myself. Should I
- 11:54laugh at that? I'm asking? All right? So let's talk about I
- 11:58want to switch gear away from you for a moment. Well, no,
- 12:01actually I don't. I want to go back one second, all right,
- 12:03I want you get me all confused. I don't want to go back.
- 12:05I'm like Danny, I'm just gonna throw it through things to the walls to
- 12:07which you want to go after. Do you think that the past battles that
- 12:11you've had with the State Republican Party could hurt you in a state wide race
- 12:13should you decide to run state No, No one. No one cares State
- 12:16Hollican Party. You can tell by how much money they raise that no one
- 12:20cares. It's an irrelevant organization. They don't pick candidates, they don't pick
- 12:22winners, they don't pick the irrelevant. You're saying, the State Republican Party
- 12:26is irrelevant. The State Holican Committee, okay, is irrelevant. Okay.
- 12:28Republican voters are the most important thing. That organization doesn't move money, doesn't
- 12:35move votes. It's basically a social club, so it's not really relevant to
- 12:39most campaigns. Okay, all right, switching gears sound. Does Joe Mansion
- 12:43run against Jim Justice for sent it? In your opinion? Does he run
- 12:46for president? Or does he run to the houses into retirement? He does
- 12:50a third party, stretch out the clock as long as you can think for
- 12:56president most likely, or just disappears into the sunset and you know, or
- 13:01you're gonna have a talk show if he wants. I mean, he can
- 13:01have yeah, and he could do it, but that wouldn't interest him.
- 13:05He is such a busy guy. Again, I don't I'm not a personally
- 13:07a big big fan or big friend of his, but I respect how busy
- 13:11he looks his work ethic or at least optically. He looks like he's always
- 13:16busy. He looks like a guy carrying six cell phones back when everybody barely
- 13:20had one. That's the thing about it. He looks super busy. Like
- 13:22him or not, he looks competent and busy, so he can do that.
- 13:26He's gonna stretch out the process long as he wants. He doesn't want
- 13:28to end his career on a loss. And I think he's smart enough to
- 13:31know. Look, here's the numbers, Dave, and not everyone's a big
- 13:33election er like we are. He only beat more and Seed by three and
- 13:37twenty eight. Yea, he didn't break fifty percent. And since then the
- 13:39West Virginia electorate has flipped eighteen percent eighteen four points. Deed are, it
- 13:46is impossible. You cannot win as a d here statewide money agnostic. Give
- 13:52him twenty million fifty million. What's the difference. That's where you are.
- 13:56That's the situation he's in. He can read it. He has a alts
- 14:00around him. We were better with numbers than I am. He doesn't.
- 14:01That's not a surprise. Who wins for governor? In your opinion? Is
- 14:05it too early to tell Patrick Morrissey going away? No one else has shown
- 14:11a sign of life. No one else has shown the fundraising. His report
- 14:16was nearly flawless, and it was big. If you're gonna be a guy
- 14:22who's a cup to check candidate like Chris Miller, don't, I don't see
- 14:26it. You have to catch a guy who's now run one two. He's
- 14:30been running since twenty twelve and running successfully and while his negatives were raised by
- 14:33Mansion Blanketship and I worked with Blanketship in eighteen. Patrick, in a race
- 14:39with more than two people in it is an easy winner, all right.
- 14:41Last question, Justice v Mooney. Mooney can win. It doesn't look like
- 14:46it right now, but he can win you think style, Yeah, because
- 14:52he's more conservative. Justice has never had someone actually run to his right and
- 14:56run hard. And the ingredients deduced have been there, but prior folks against
- 15:03him have not opted to use those things to hit him, you know,
- 15:07the one that just came out of the wall this week with Democrats are pushing
- 15:09him. But it's frankly something I've been studying since twenty fifteen. Jim Justice
- 15:13employs hundreds of foreigners on visas. The Greenbrier speak you know, Spanish,
- 15:18Mexican, whatever, that's an issue. De's are gonna play it, the
- 15:24arts are gonna play it. Americans in West Virginia who screamed wall are going
- 15:28to love that. And that's coming and it's beautiful there, our son.
- 15:33How close with this rob There are some high ranking Republicans who shall remain nameless,
- 15:37that have told me they are going to do whatever they can to make
- 15:41sure Jim Justice is not senator. And these are Republicans we're talking about.
- 15:45Well, I've been saying that since twenty fifteen, since I asked him where
- 15:46the capital of Israel was the day announced for day announced for governor. He's
- 15:52a bad dude, Rob Cornelius. I appreciate it, man. There's always
- 15:56a pleasure, dude. Happy to help you fill the time here. It's

- 19:56How are you, sir? A good morning, I'm good. You
- 19:59got a lot to find. Hello. When you follow Rob Cornelius, you
- 20:00know that's what I hear. You're kind of a laid back kind of a
- 20:04guy. So and then we'll wrap it back up and push me. But
- 20:07you've got a lot of important things to talk about. I want to talk
- 20:10about this proposed water park resort for the area. Now, last time you
- 20:14were on the show, you talked about it. You're a little bit of
- 20:15egg in details, understandably, So what can you share this time around about
- 20:18this? Okay, Well, first thing I want to emphasize is that it
- 20:22is still alive. It's still very much in the works. We are.
- 20:26In fact, I just talked to the developers in Fort Worth, Texas last
- 20:30night. They are still very much the intent to be able to develop here
- 20:34in the Charleston metro area with a major resort. This is an eighty million
- 20:40dollars first phase, a total one hundred and fifty million dollars total build out.
- 20:45They would have already been in here their original plans when they flew in
- 20:48here in March to visit do the site, visit and look at the area
- 20:52and visit with the local leaders. They wanted to be back here in May
- 20:55and break ground, cut ribbon. But we've run in some problems with the
- 20:57access road. And exactly are we talking about are you allowed to say yet?
- 21:02Well, I can be I think that's not too much of a secret
- 21:04now any basement. On social media, even the developers posted things about this,
- 21:08and it's at the seventy seven seventy nine interstate splitters a large parcel there,
- 21:12about three hundred acres that sits right along between Westmoreland and as you circle
- 21:17back up north around seventy seven, and you access at a couple of different
- 21:22ways, but one of the main ways I think they're looking as come in
- 21:23off a new house Branch road off of Pennsylvania Avenue. That's about eight tenths
- 21:27of a mile. It is already asphalt through there, but it's it's just
- 21:33not wide enough for you know, if you're looking at more traffic and large
- 21:37vehicles and motor homes. Fifth will RVs and that kind of thing coming in
- 21:41out of the RV resort. So you know, the requests that just get
- 21:45upgraded. So you know, we've been back and forth with the state about
- 21:48what that's going to cost, how that's going to take place. The developers
- 21:52would like, obviously that to have a surts that that road is going to
- 21:55be upgraded to snuff before they make a major commitment on the site. And
- 22:00of course the state is like, well, you know, we don't want
- 22:03to you know, at the end of being provedent with taxpayer money, but
- 22:07they want to make sure that the developer is on board for sure before they
- 22:11make an investment in the road. So that's been but you know, we've
- 22:15set up a process by which most sides will be protected on this, I
- 22:22think, and we're getting there so well, the plans are sitting down with
- 22:26the Governor's office this coming week, this next week and be able to go
- 22:30through that and hopefully push that across the finish line. What exactly are we
- 22:32going to see at this part, this proposed part Okay, great, great
- 22:34question. And phase one and that's something they think within twelve months from the
- 22:40time they get you know, the ink the deal and sign the agreement on
- 22:42the property on the site with the owner, is that phase one be one
- 22:47hundred and seventy five RV sites. And these are deluxe RV states. This
- 22:52isn't just you know, uh, state park kind of thing. These are
- 22:55upscale with the cement pads and patios and h our pits and those kinds of
- 23:00things. And one hundred and seventy five of those fifty cabins deluxe water attractions.
- 23:06When we say that, you know there's a lot of water. There's
- 23:07no water on the site, but they'll create the lakes, ponds, waterfalls
- 23:12and in fact, the name of the resort would be Aspen Falls. Is
- 23:15what is what has been talented up there, Aspen Falls right it down,
- 23:19Ryan, that's the first time we've heard the Aspen Falls and Google. You
- 23:23know, they looked at the trees and with native trees in West Virginia and
- 23:26the aspen tree is native to West Virginia, and uh, they wanted to
- 23:30be able to use the landscape in the topography there to their advantage and would
- 23:33create some man made waterfalls throughout the properties. And uh that creates a lot
- 23:38of water effects as are attractive when you're looking at tourism and UM, so
- 23:41there'd be fifty cabins along with that in that first phase, like I said,
- 23:45there will be um indoor outdoor water attractions on that with the pool area
- 23:52a lazy river kind of thing. So the uh that would be complimentary to
- 23:57promoting the RV resort and average and things attracting people there. And then also
- 24:03a mountain coaster. You're familiar probably with those in Pigeon Forwards and forth.
- 24:06There's none of those in the state of West Virginia, none of them really
- 24:07in the mid Atlantic. You have to go to Manassas, Virginia or Pigeon
- 24:11Forwards for the closest one of those. So they felt like that, you
- 24:15know, this is something that would draw people from a four hour radius,
- 24:18which you know, if you look at that demographics on that, that's about
- 24:22a twenty one twenty two million people population base to pull from here in the
- 24:26Charleston metro area. Talking with Dela Gadina Farell about this, aspen Falls Falls
- 24:32is going to be the name of it. I like it Aspen Falls,
- 24:33all right, So let's go and phase two of that. Let's just phase
- 24:37one. That's the same eighty million dollars first five Phase two. And the
- 24:41reason they want to do that because the RV resort is the quickest they can
- 24:44have up and running and creating cash flow and revenue stream. But then it
- 24:48would go one quickly to a larger development part of it and is the hotel
- 24:52uh Indoor Great Wolf Lodge type of I'm not saying it's going to be that
- 24:56brain, but it'll be similar to the Great Wolf lodge type of indoor water
- 24:59park along with an outdoor water park side of it that would be open to
- 25:03the general public to here local people be able to have access to that as
- 25:07well as to people in sight. Uh, they're looking at building an observation
- 25:11tower because this property, the higher points of it overlook Yeager International Runway or
- 25:15airport, and so visitors can come there and be able to dine and be
- 25:19able to look right down on the runway. And as they say, you
- 25:23know, air Force one comes and does its touchdown takeoffs here, you can
- 25:26say and watch that while you're having lunch or dinner or whatever there. And
- 25:30so that's something you know, they say in business, onything better than being
- 25:33better is being different, and this would be different from anything else out in
- 25:37the country in terms of the U RV and overnight tourism business. All right,
- 25:44big question, where's the money coming from? Okay, great, great
- 25:47question? Is going to come from Texas in California. That's the great part
- 25:49of it. I'll talk about a private thing, right, that's a private
- 25:52company of this is not this is not excuse me like to propose capital sports
- 25:56complex and I'm not trying to throw shade on that because I'm a big supporter
- 25:59of that. But it's not like that. And this is this is private
- 26:03developers. It's not tax money or anything like that. These are private developers.
- 26:06And let me say that the Capital Sports Complex, they are very aware
- 26:08of that and the two kind of working together. They like that. They
- 26:14like the idea. So anybody who says, well, you know, uh,
- 26:15you know, is this a good investment on a capital sports complex,
- 26:18then yes it is because this is what's attracting people like this comment and spend
- 26:22their private capital in West Virginia. Uh. Same with the Shawnee Sports Complex.
- 26:26They actually went down and visited the sports complex when they're in here in
- 26:30March. They've been out to the cross Lands Casino that you know that those
- 26:33are things, the uh, the Halfield mcquoitraill. They actually traveled down to
- 26:37the new mc gorge National Park and the bridge. They've been there seeing those
- 26:41things on the ground. So they understand that these are attractions. They're going
- 26:45to pull people to their you know, their resort investment, but their money.
- 26:52What they'll do is once they get this up and get the agreement in
- 26:55plays, they'll take them thirty to ninety days. They'll go out and solicit
- 26:57capital from investors. And in the RV industry is a fifty billion and growing
- 27:03in the United States, and so a lot of people are looking places to
- 27:07safely put their money with the market all over the places it is. So
- 27:11you're looking at a minimum fifteen percent return on your investment in our V industry,
- 27:15and that doesn't count some of the incentives the State Tourists and Department is
- 27:17going to give them as well, so they won't have me a problem pulling
- 27:19Texas and California money into this. And then once it's open, we're looking
- 27:22at a forty million dollars up to a forty million dollars annual economic impact to
- 27:27the region. And that's money coming in from I said that four. Our
- 27:30radius includes Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Michigan, Pennsylvania. So that's out
- 27:37of state money coming being pumped into the local West Virginia economy. All right,
- 27:42indeed, all right, so are we out of phases? I mean,
- 27:45because you had one? Because I want to move on to sub dout
- 27:48segetia. I will say this, you know that. And one other thing
- 27:49in that phase two is they want to look at building condominiums up other three
- 27:55hundred acres. About a hundred acres of it sits inside of Charleston city limits,
- 27:57so everyone on that side they look at maybe putting up condominiums where people
- 28:02could actually buy or release and then they would have access to the amenities.
- 28:03So that's kind of nice too that they would have there. The other party
- 28:07is, you know that they feel like if they can be successful with the
- 28:11initial Charleston leyout and they want to put in three or four of these in
- 28:15West Virginia. They feel like there's the opportunities here to do that. So
- 28:17they're looking at southern West Virginia, more central West Virginia, and some other
- 28:21areas. I would think out in the Panhandle would probably the east from Panhanda
- 28:22would probably be a no brainer for that as well. We're talking with Dalla
- 28:26Good Dana Farrell. You'll keep us updated on that project, I'm sure.
- 28:29Now I want to get to this, uh and it has to do because
- 28:30you're a sports guy I want to talk about and also you're an educator,
- 28:33so I want to talk about this high school what I've referred to as the
- 28:37high school transfer portal. Students now student athletes, I suppose, can transfer
- 28:41from school to school pretty much as they wish for the purpose of sports without
- 28:45sitting out any amount of time. Right, Is that correct? You're sure
- 28:49that's what changed. You brought me on the air here and said, you
- 28:52know, he's usually pretty easy going guy, but you know, issues like
- 28:56this, it really kind of bothers me. You know that that we've headed
- 29:00down this direction. As one area coach, I think coach Jamiel Master said,
- 29:03you know why, why is the state legislature getting involved in this?
- 29:07You know, this is something that coaches, administrators and s s a c.
- 29:11Should be looking at and running in. You know, why do we
- 29:14have our fingers into this mess? And you know we're seeing already this has
- 29:18just been a mitigated disaster in terms of kids moving around. And let me
- 29:22say this one of the things I look at, you know, I think
- 29:26Central Capital said one time, this state is a state of small towns.
- 29:30We're just you know, let's go back to Jason all Dean's there's do that
- 29:33at a small town where you know, we're small towns across the state of
- 29:37West Virginia, and every small town has its local high school and that's the
- 29:42cornerstone of that community, and that those schools identify it the community, community
- 29:48to advice with the high school, and so they become a part of integrated.
- 29:51Friday Night is more than just a game. It's about a community involvement,
- 29:53everybody's social gathering event. And you want your home kids that grew up
- 29:59in your church and grew up and you seem in a supermarkets. If we'll
- 30:02be able to play with your home team, not playing across the county or
- 30:06in another county or somewhere just for their own self benefit in a society where
- 30:10it's all about me, it's all about self, you know. We want
- 30:14to stress it's about your team, it's about your community and putting others first.
- 30:18Let me play Devil's advocate here for a moment. I may have brought
- 30:19this up to you in the past. It's kind of an indcidotal type story
- 30:22here, but I have a good friend who was a former high school coach
- 30:25in an area outside Knaw Valley. I want to preface that he's no longer
- 30:27in the coaching game, but he told me once years ago. He and
- 30:30I were talking about this fifteen twenty years ago. This is when he was
- 30:33still coaching hero We brought up the subject of the high school transfers and whatnot.
- 30:37And he said there are some kids that he coached that the only way
- 30:44delegate that they were going to be able to make it the college was through
- 30:45sports. Maybe they don't have a good enough grades, or the parents can't
- 30:48afford to send them, or maybe parents make too much money for them to
- 30:52get financial aid. Whatever. The kid has college level skills on the field
- 30:56and on the court, but maybe playing for a medio her team, you
- 31:00know, they're not surrounded by enough to get them the attention that they deserve.
- 31:06His point was, why shouldn't a student be allowed to transfer to another
- 31:11school that gives him or her an opportunity to be able to put themselves on
- 31:17display. Maybe it's a down year for South Charleston High and they transferred to
- 31:21GW. I'm just using that as an example. What I mean that was
- 31:25his argument was this, the only way this kid's going to get to go
- 31:26to college is if he's on a better team. Your thoughts, Well,
- 31:30I spent thirty years teaching and coaching in public schools, and I can tell
- 31:34you that, especially in today's environment with all the club and travel teams and
- 31:38stuff forth, if that child, if that student that wants to be noticed
- 31:45by college recruiter or whatever, they're more than ample ways for them. And
- 31:48in fairness, this was fifteen or twenty years ago that we were talking about.
- 31:51It's a different world with YouTube and things of that nature. Now,
- 31:53is good point these You know, most of the recruiting doesn't happen at the
- 31:57high school venue us and stuff, where those college coaches are coming out and
- 32:01watching these club tournaments and them, and if it's football, then they go
- 32:06to camps and those those camps basically served as combines. And I'll go back
- 32:10even twenty thirty. I'll go back our high school time. Kurt Warner came
- 32:15out of Single A Pine and went to Penn States. So, uh,
- 32:20case debunked right there. Okay, all right, so quickly, how do
- 32:22we fix this? You're in the legislator. How do we fix it?
- 32:25Well? Uh, you know, what would you like to see happen?
- 32:28Well, this came about the history of this. You know, I don't
- 32:30think that the majority of delegates that I served with wanted this to happen to
- 32:34start with. But it was an amendment that was stuck on to a popular
- 32:37Hope scholarship eligibility bill on the last day of session, and because it was
- 32:43stuck in there, the entire unpopular part of a bill was stuck into a
- 32:45popular one. In order for us to strip that back out of there one
- 32:49the last day a would have killed the main part of the bill. So
- 32:51a lot of delegates were apprehension would be able to do that, and so
- 32:54they just went ahead and voted this through. I don't think, realizing the
- 32:58implications that we're going to cause downstream. Uh and the same you noticed that
- 33:01the governor did not sign this. He wouldn't veto it, but he wouldn't
- 33:05but there again because of the Hope pass out. But he just let it
- 33:07go. So he knew and understood the problems was going to create, even
- 33:10for his own schoold Creambrier East. But you know what we'll be able to
- 33:15do, I think is look at us offer a bill of this coming session
- 33:20to reverse that part of it, the Hope scholarship part of his fine.
- 33:22But this would go back and take out that. You know, we had
- 33:25killed that part of that bill two years straight. It was very unpopular in
- 33:29the House. And like I said, the Senator that you know, kudos
- 33:32to him, he made a good political move. And he got it across
- 33:37the finish line. But I don't think that's going to stand all right now.

- 37:12to with you this morning. Man. Let's get to interims coming up?
- 37:16All right, So you got candidates for upcoming elections. I want to get
- 37:21to all that a little bit later. On National Story, Hunter Biden doing
- 37:23court today to plead do a misdemeanor on tax evasion, also for not documented
- 37:28his past drug use when obtaining a gun normally wouldn't be available defense of their
- 37:31speculation that he Trump appointed judge. Though Mike will hear the case, Mary
- 37:36L. Noriega's her name, may not accept the plea, which could lead
- 37:40to jail time for Hunter Biden. I know, yeah here talking we start
- 37:44with that, and you ahead and peeled a band aid off. And nobody's
- 37:46above the law, and he's pleading guilty, and I should be treated like
- 37:50anybody else in a quarter of law. Now, can we talk about the
- 37:53interims and let's talk about state politics? Have at it. I'm gonna open
- 37:57up to you man, all right, thank you. Yeah. The interims
- 38:00scheduled for the believe first week of August. It's like seventh, eighth,
- 38:02and ninth. In the Democrats in the House, the caucus that I'm a
- 38:07member of, we issued a letter last week calling for a special session.
- 38:15And uh, you know, while we're hearing talk of a special session dealing
- 38:19with you know this almost I mean, you know, while we're in interims,
- 38:22we're gonna be coming up on the anniversary of the governor calling for a
- 38:25state of emergency in our correctional facilities. If it's it is a state of
- 38:30emergency, it is a crisis, and that means you don't wait around for
- 38:34a year until you address it. It needs to be addressed. So we
- 38:37are calling for a special session to address that issue, as well as several
- 38:40other issues. Also, our crisis in our institutions of higher learning. Uh,
- 38:46you know, we've heard the report for not just a w view,
- 38:49but but the universities and Alderson brought us in us a school that's been there
- 38:53for over one hundred years and uh, you know, might have to close
- 38:58its doors. We want to address that crisis, and of course, probably
- 39:01the most important, in my opinion, the most important crisis right now facing
- 39:06this state. Eight thousand children children in foster care. An issue that's largely
- 39:09been ignored by the governor. It's a byproduct, of course, of the
- 39:15of the drug epidemic that has just ravaged this state. The governor has largely
- 39:20ignored that issue. We have an Office of Drug Control Policy in this state.
- 39:24However, it has been vacant. There's no director. He hasn't appointed
- 39:28a director. He has left the director of office of the Office of Drug
- 39:30Control policy has left that position vacant for now nearly eight months. So you
- 39:36can't tell me that's a priority of the governor. And yet we're now over
- 39:38a week, almost two weeks from the deadline past the deadline that the governor
- 39:43had to appoint directors to the West Virginia First Foundation Board that will determine how
- 39:49the drug abatement money is spending, the drug drug settlement money is spent.
- 39:52He hasn't appointed anybody to that yet. He has five appointees to make,
- 39:57hasn't made a single one yet. He's now almost two weeks as the deadline.
- 40:00But let me get back to the issue I was talking about, which
- 40:01is foster care, which is a byproduct of this drug problem that the governor
- 40:05is failing to address. We have over eight thousand children in the state's custody
- 40:09because of this issue, and we've heard reports. Just last week there was
- 40:15a report to a three hundred instances, over three hundred children running away from
- 40:20the foster care system. Their their situation is so bad they would either sleep
- 40:24on the street or sleep in the woods. Then you go to a group
- 40:29home or or the placement that they were in, or the reports We've also
- 40:34heard that the state has been dropping off some of the foster children in hotels
- 40:40throughout the state. Uh, you know, defend for themselves largely unsupervised.
- 40:45I think that's just something that would make any parent of a teenager in this
- 40:50state just shutter to think that that. You know, if they think about
- 40:53their kids just being left alone to fend for themselves in a hotel. This
- 40:57isn't how we would treat our kids. You know what these are are kids.
- 41:00They're in state custody, and this is a crisis and we need to
- 41:02address it. We need to address it yesterday. I'm gonna guess that when
- 41:07you hear the governor and you hear folks like Dave Hardy might talk about the
- 41:12excess money we have lyne around that, you're you're not impressed. Now,
- 41:15you know who's really not impressed. That correctional officer that has to put in
- 41:17a twelve hour work day and then drive home fifty to one hundred miles each
- 41:22day. They're not too impressed with that surplus. You know, the college
- 41:27student who not sure if they can stay in West Virginia to finish their course
- 41:30of study because their course of study might be on the chopping block at their
- 41:34university or college. I'll tell you it's definitely not impressed. It's some kid
- 41:37that got dropped off this morning at the motel six. Are Are you hopeful
- 41:40that anything will get done? Are you optimistic as far as the special session
- 41:45of the interims Goo, Do you think anything will get done? You know,
- 41:47unfortunately in state government, and especially over the last ten years of Republican
- 41:53rule, when it's all said and done, a lot more gets said than
- 41:57gets done, unfortunately. But we need to get some things done. We
- 42:00owe it to those kids that are being abandoned. We owe it to our
- 42:05our correctional officers and support staff who's being treated like correctional officers who just not
- 42:09paid like correctional officers. We owe it to our our college students. We
- 42:13owe it to the future of this state to actually do something about it the
- 42:15state. Look, the state needs a governor right now, and we don't
- 42:22have one. We have a governor who's more more focused on getting an office
- 42:25in Washington, DC than he is on showing up at his office down the
- 42:29road here in Charleston. The state deserves to have a governor and a functional
- 42:32state government. We don't have it right now, tim minutes away from Tan
- 42:36Texas. Hey, Delia Pushkin, here's a quarter call someone who cares.

- 45:46put an end to this nonsense or transfer without penalty for athletic youth. Long
- 45:52overdue, thanks Dave, Texas, says Dave. The governor is calling for
- 45:54something. The delegate is calling for something. Well, I'm calling for something.
- 45:59I just don't know what it is, but I'm calling for it.
- 46:00So is the Texture Textra says, an average of four overdose deaths every day
- 46:06here in West Virginia doesn't even take into account the thousands of other addicts and
- 46:08alcoholics needing help each day, let alone the homeless and mentally ill. What
- 46:13a rocket ride. Yeah, we are in crisis mode. It has been
- 46:17and it's nothing new, and it's not getting better. And yeah, the
- 46:22fact that you know, we have an Office of Drug Control Policy that was
- 46:25created by the legislature, and we have had some good directors of that office,
- 46:30but right now that seat is vacant. There is no director, and
- 46:36it's not that there's any more extra funding or extra staff going in to help
- 46:39the folks who are doing a good job trying to hold things together over there
- 46:43without without an appointed director. But we're now coming up on eight months eight
- 46:47months without a director. So it's clearly not a priority for this governor.
- 46:51And I said when when we created the West Virginia First Foundation, which is
- 46:55supposed to be an independent board to disseminate the money that's going to be coming
- 47:00in to our localities for these drug these drugs settlements, each of the regions
- 47:07they followed the articles of incorporation and they've elected directors to this board. The
- 47:13governor, if you read the articles of incorporation, he had the same deadline,
- 47:16and he was supposed to actually, the way I read it, he
- 47:20was supposed to make his appointments first because that could have influenced who who the
- 47:23regions could have picked or not picked if they obviously, if the governor put
- 47:27somebody on, they wouldn't put that person on. But the governor hasn't made
- 47:30his selection yet. I've not even heard rumors of who the governor is going
- 47:32to put on yet. And it was clear in the articles of incorporation they
- 47:37had a certain amount of time to make these appointments, and the governor's appointments
- 47:39were actually referred to as initial appointments. My definition at words first, that
- 47:45would come first. He didn't make the appointments. It's clearly not a priority.
- 47:50He is more focused on running for office than serving in office. Five

- 48:07because what you don't know can hurt you. Texas Pushkin loves to complain that
- 48:10elaborate on problems that have persisted since before Republican control. The difference now is
- 48:15he wants to throw money at the problems like all Dems do. It didn't
- 48:20work to previous eighty four years, and it won't now. These problems have
- 48:22gotten way worse over the past several years, and as they've gotten way worse
- 48:27under the under the administration of James C. Justice because we have an absentee
- 48:31governor. And when you have a governor that doesn't show up for work,
- 48:37governor that makes appointments where he doesn't even know who he's appointing, and no
- 48:42offense to secretarists or saya. I think he's a good person. I know
- 48:45him. He's a nice security Chamland Security. But when the governor made that
- 48:50appointment, he clearly didn't know who he was. Did you watch the videos?
- 48:52I did not know, but watch it. He doesn't know who he's
- 48:54appointing, and it's very clear I guess we're going to appoint He can't pronounce
- 48:59his name. You think he would have learned how to say the man's name
- 49:00before he made the appointment. It's embarrassing, but that's what happens when you
- 49:04know for a governor that doesn't show it for work. But I'm not just
- 49:06complaining, I'm talking. I mean, these are real issues. I want
- 49:08you to put yourself in the shoes as some kid parents have had. Their
- 49:14issues are so bad they can't take care of this child anymore, and then
- 49:17they get taken away by the state because there's nobody else to take care of
- 49:21them. And they can't find a placement for him anywhere because we're not making
- 49:23it easy enough for foster and kinship families to open up their homes to these
- 49:28children. We're not working with them well enough to actually to create more placements
- 49:32for these children, and instead the state cares so little about them that they
- 49:37drop them off at a motel. So I think it's an important issue,
- 49:42and I think it's something that needs to be on the front burner. It
- 49:45needs to be addressed in a special session right now, three minutes away from
- 49:49ten. I know you're more concerned, Mike, with things relating to the
- 49:51Democratic Party, and I'll get to that momentarily. But of course, Monday,
- 49:53State Auditor J. B. Mccuski dropped out of the race for governor,
- 49:55opting instead to run for Attorney General. Hill face off against Mike's toward
- 50:00and Ryan Well, a couple of state senators, And I know it's early.
- 50:02We have a bunch of Republicans that have thrown their hats in the proverbial
- 50:06ring for various seats from governor, US Senate, House, so on and
- 50:08so forth, Secretary of State and others. Hearing rumors that Honeyja mayor Steve
- 50:14Williams may run for governor, looks like he will on the Democratic side,
- 50:17What are we going to start to see more Democrats in the mix? I
- 50:21know it's early, it is early, and it used to be Labor Day
- 50:23was the time. But yeah, why don't we start to see some announcements
- 50:27of some Democrats later we get in the summer into the fall. We are
- 50:30having lots of conversations with great potential candidates who want to serve the state of
- 50:35West Virginia for all the right reasons, because they want to help make it
- 50:38a better state. They want to make it a place where you know,
- 50:42people want to live, work and raise a family. We're having those conversations,
- 50:45and as as soon as we get commitments and websites set up and things
- 50:50ready to go, you'll be hearing them in due time, you know,
- 50:52the filing periods not until January. We got here well before that, you'll
- 50:55be hearing some announcements. You talked about my friend, Auditor mccuski, who
- 51:00is I like, he's a good guy. But you know, when I
- 51:04heard that, you had Dana Farrell on her delicate Farrell talking about the transfer
- 51:07portal. For a second, I thought you're talking about the transfer portal where
- 51:10you can just switch from the governor's race for the attorney general's race. Is
- 51:15that the transfer port It's a different about Texas. Pushkin is always great at
- 51:19pointing out the problems, but never offers any solutions to the problems. He
- 51:22just wants to rail about his obsession with a governor. You can't force the
- 51:24citizens to take in children or work jobs they don't want to no matter the
- 51:30pain. You can actually talk to the foster families and the kinship families like
- 51:34like we do on our side regularly have meetings with the groups to advocate for
- 51:38the foster families and who are foster families and see what it would take to
- 51:43make it easier for them to take in more kids or make it easier for
- 51:46to have new foster families. We do have solutions. I'd talk about changing
- 51:51the pay scale for our correctional officers and staff so we're able to retain the
- 51:55veterans in there, and also addressing the overcrowded the overcrowding in our in our
- 52:00jails. And we have solutions, but first we have to have that special
- 52:05session to bring it up. I have to have a healthy debate on it.
- 52:07All right, Mike, I appreciate it. State Democratic Party Chair and
- 52:10delicate Mike Pushkin five and brought to part by your hometown baseball team, the
- 52:14Charleston Dirty Birds. All right, we gotta go. My producer was Ryan
