- 1:11SPEAKER_01: So what's new with you, man?
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: What you got?
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: Not a whole lot.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: It's been a pretty uneventful week, other than um two babies on the on the uh just running me down constantly.
- 1:24SPEAKER_03: Uh other than that, uh, as you can see, we're I'm finally unveiling the uh the signage courtesy of Merrick 3D, friend of the program.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: Um blessed me with several new signs.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: As you can see, it prominently displayed on this high chair.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: So those of you listening at home on the audio, you can't tell, but Mike's got some new uh uh uh signs in the background, the mic blitz and an on-air.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: They are super sexy, makes the studio look really rad.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: And I actually think on top of the of the child seat is a good touch.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: That's just shows how authentic we are.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: We are two dads doing this dad pod, and you know, we got baby stuff everywhere.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: My whole life is covered with baby stuff.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: I got closetful baby stuff right next to me, so I get that.
- 2:09SPEAKER_03: We are nothing if not keeping it real over here.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, absolutely.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: Uh speaking of uh home set improvements, a shout out to Matt Gorsuch who gave me an autographed uh photo of my man Zeb Ross from the J Creek Clog Jay Creek Cloggers.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: If you've ever uh seen that man dance, he's the guy in blue jeans with the mullet.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: He does some awesome country tunes, um, phenomenal dancer.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: And my buddy Matt gave me an autographed photo that I have now predominantly hanging in my studio.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: So thank you so much for Matt for that.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: So this has been a big week for improvements of our uh visual space.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: You guys gotta check us out on YouTube more often.
- 2:43SPEAKER_03: Huge shout-outs to Matt Gorsuch and uh Brett Merrick for free stuff.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: We're we're here for it.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: Keep them coming.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: Anyone wants to send us more stuff?
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: We will put it, we will hang it up in our studios.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: Uh so thank you.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: Give me all the goofy stuff.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: All the goofy stuff.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: All right, let's talk some football because we got a lot to talk about.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: Uh so as usually what we're gonna do is we're gonna talk about what we saw last week and then we're gonna jump into what we saw this week.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Um, last week, week zero, not a lot of football, but no shortage of storylines, man.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: Uh a lot going on.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: I'm calling this, so I'm calling this don't overreact.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: This is this is this is this is like you're we saw some football, we saw some things, and everybody is going to overreact to everything they saw.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: This is called this is called Be Cool Saturday.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: Just just be cool.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: We saw some football, we saw some things.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: We want to just be cool about it.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: Just don't don't freak out, just be cool.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: And we're probably gonna freak out.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: People are freaking out.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: People are definitely freaking out, and you and I are gonna do a little bit of that as well.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: But this is this is all about week zero.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: It's not even week one yet.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: It's just be cool.
- 3:41SPEAKER_03: Uh well, I will say, as far as being cool, um, we whiffed on our on our first prediction of the year before the season even started.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: Don't even get me started.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: How is Nebraska?
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: So obviously, we're talking about Nebraska Northwestern.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: Nebraska was a 13-point favorite.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: That game was played.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: This is the headlining game of week zero.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: That game was played in Dublin.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: Nebraska went up uh early.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: I mean, sorry, yeah, Nebraska went up early.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: They were doing well.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: They were up by 10 in the third.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: They did a ridiculous onside kick, didn't work out, and the rest of the game was just bully ball from Northwestern's big uglies offensive line, just had they're just pushing the ball.
- 4:16SPEAKER_03: Journalism and football.
- 4:17SPEAKER_03: That's what Northwestern does.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: Smokes, how does Scott Frost let this happen?
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: Speaking of overreacting, I'm cueing, I'm writing that guy's eulogy.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Go ahead and uh uh cue up Sarah McLaughlin's angel because you're gonna be hearing that here pretty soon.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: That guy's there are Husker fans who want that guy's head on a platter, and I don't think I don't know if he dodges this one.
- 4:36SPEAKER_03: No, he doesn't dodge it.
- 4:37SPEAKER_03: Um they will win probably four out of their next five, looking like a schedule.
- 4:42SPEAKER_03: They must.
- 4:43SPEAKER_03: Um but I don't think he survives the season, and I don't think that's that bold of a prediction at this point.
- 4:50SPEAKER_03: He had to win this one, and uh, that's unfortunate.
- 4:53SPEAKER_03: We're we were rooting for him as a show.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Just see, I mean, again, North North Nebraska is one of those blue chip programs where the world is just better when they're good.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: And my God, I wanted so bad for Frost, it didn't happen.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't know.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, they just got zero pressure the whole game.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: They're obviously their defensive front is not what we thought it would be at all.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: Not that it needs to be world stoppers to stop the the mighty Northwestern rush attack, but good grief, man.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: Just no pressure.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: Second half, just all time.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: So kudos to Northwestern, kudos to Northwestern offensive line.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: Scott Frost, what's what what happened, man?
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: I just oh what's the deal with that?
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: What's the deal with that?
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: Uh that's all I got on that.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: Anything else you want to say on that game?
- 5:35SPEAKER_03: Uh nope, that's all.
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: I mean, pretty much nailed it.
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: North Scott Frost, peace, peace, buddy.
- 5:41SPEAKER_03: It's been real.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: Thanks for coming.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: Uh, I like what I saw at a UNC.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: Uh Drake May, the quarterback over there, he looked like he looked actually relatively solid um for uh you know take taking over.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: Um, and I you know, I know competition was pretty low, but I just he he looked all right.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: Um, so that's all I got there.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: Other thoughts?
- 6:00SPEAKER_03: Um Florida State put up like 500 yards of rushing on Duquesne.
- 6:04SPEAKER_03: So a lot of yards.
- 6:06SPEAKER_03: Your mighty uh Tigers of Paton Rouge, maybe shaking their booties a little bit this week.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: Maybe a touch, maybe a touch.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: Uh well, uh, who else we got?
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: Um, I want to talk about UNLV, UNLV, the mighty rebels, who took it to who took it, who beat uh Ida Idaho State.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: They have uh started the um what is it?
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: It's a it's the it's the turnover slot machine.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: So one of the great things in college football is everybody Collins has these gimmicks uh that kind of to get they have to get players bought in.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: And sometimes they're about defense.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: Virginia Tech had the work pail for a long time.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: Um it's obviously all the time.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: Turnover chain and turnover.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: Turnover chain in Miami is the one's the recent headline group.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: That's been retired.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: Since been retired, which is a shame.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: Uh UNLV has the slot machine.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: UNLV, of course, is in Las Vegas.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: They are the rebels.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: I actually watched a video of it.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: So when the player gets a turnover, the whole defense, I think, or the whole secondary runs the sideline to the slot machine.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: The guy puts it's it's a massive oversized slot machine.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: He pulls the crank, some techno music starts playing, so it's like and it comes up rebel, rebel, rebel, and everybody goes ballistic, and it's amazing.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: It is amazing, and I'm here for it.
- 7:14SPEAKER_03: So I think it's the dumbest thing in the world.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: No way.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: This is this is the kind of stuff that makes college football great.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: And that is uh that was a that was a highlight of the whole game.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: Nobody cared about the 30-point beatdown, everyone's all about the turnover slot machine.
- 7:28SPEAKER_03: I am get off my lawn, old man over here.
- 7:32SPEAKER_03: I think it's the stupidest thing in the world.
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: What are you gonna do?
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: Uh old man yells at clouds.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's true.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: Uh what else we got?
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: Uh talk about the number one offense in the country.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: I cannot believe we're saying these words that are actually accurate.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: Vanderbilt uh just opening up a can on poor Hawaii.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Now, we knew we do we know the we do know that the coach Chang, Timmy Chang, former quarterback from yesterday, has a full rebuild going on over there.
- 7:59SPEAKER_03: And uh they lost like like a half their roster.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they're I mean they're really starting from scratch, but holy smokes, Vanderbilt uh went to Honolulu, scored 63 points, and now has and currently is the nation's number one offense.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: Has that ever been true, Mike?
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: Has Vanderbilt um ever for a single day ever had the number one?
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: I don't care if week zero and a hundred teams haven't played yet.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: They had number one offense.
- 8:25SPEAKER_03: Maybe in basketball or or potentially baseball, but no, never, never in football.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: I wish we had an intern to check the stats on that because I want to know if this is the first time in the history of college football that Vanderbilt has numbered.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Ed Keefley, can you look that up for us real quick?
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's in grad school.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: Let's get him, let's get him working on that.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: Uh good kudos to that.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: Um I look good.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: Um, I like the I saw DeVito.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: Um Bielamud looks so solid.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: I mean, I thought it's Wyoming also in a rebuild.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: I thought Wyoming was gonna play be tougher than they were.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Um, but um Illinois, they took their business.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: It was a it was a it was a 30-point shellacking at home.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: Good for them.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, good for them.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about week one, baby.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'll talk about week one.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: Week zero is lame.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: But before we do that, um, we should probably talk about what we're drinking, which we totally skipped over really quick.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: Uh so I'll I'll get into it really quick.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: Too much excitement.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: So excited.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: We're just all we want to talk about the ball.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: We skip, we skip by one of our marquee segments.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's August 31st.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: Uh Labor Day has not happened, so I'm still drinking summer brews.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: So I got one of my last Pacificos floating back in my fridge.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: Um, I just love Pacifico so much.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: Man, you're getting wild.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: It is my beer of summer, man.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: I drink this stuff all summer.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: I love it, especially at the beach.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: Uh, I've got obviously the beach days are behind us, but I still got a few of these left, so I'm drinking one of these tonight.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: What you got?
- 9:35SPEAKER_03: Yes, savor the flavor, baby.
- 9:38SPEAKER_03: Um, so I'm a big fan of Stone, especially since they moved to Richmond.
- 9:43SPEAKER_03: And I love their uh 12 12 pack uh mix pack mix pack.
- 9:48SPEAKER_03: Okay, uh four different beers, and I'm drinking the delicious stone delicious IPA.
- 9:54SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 9:55SPEAKER_03: Uh and it comes with the delicious, the fear movie lines, which you know I'm a huge fan of.
- 10:00SPEAKER_03: Uh they're hazy, and then I think the um one other one.
- 10:05SPEAKER_03: Anyway, it's just a slight different takes on IPAs.
- 10:09SPEAKER_03: All of them are good, and uh, so I'm drinking the delicious tonight from the 12-pack.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: Stone Stone puts out good stuff, and they're and and they're a great, they're a great group to have in town.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: So uh I could dig it.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: Awesome.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: Stone and Pacifico.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: Well, welcome to the party.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: Uh typically do that at the beginning of the segment, but we uh I was like obviously got too excited, so now we're talking about it now.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: All right, let's talk about week one.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: Uh so what we're gonna do is we're gonna run through kind of uh was that one, two, three, four, five.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: We got I think we said ten games.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: We're gonna talk about ten games that we think are of particular interest, uh kind of touching on what to watch for, what we think, kind of hit you with our analysis, kind of get your uh your beak wet prepared for what's to come.
- 10:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, get your appetite super wet for what is on deck.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Uh so we're gonna start with um, I think one of the big games is it tomorrow?
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: We're gonna start we're gonna talk about Thursday night, eight o'clock.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: Who we got?
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: Penn State at Purdue.
- 11:02SPEAKER_03: All right, all right.
- 11:03SPEAKER_03: Um, this one is a fun one because it is a one of those rare early season conference matchups, and you guys know that I'm high on Purdue this year.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: I've been um jumping on the spoiler maker bandwagon uh since a few weeks ago.
- 11:20SPEAKER_03: Um this so this one's a good one.
- 11:22SPEAKER_03: The um the Penn State Nittany Lions going to Purdue march in three and a half point favorites, and there's a lot of talent at Penn State.
- 11:34SPEAKER_03: Uh Purdue, a little a little less talent, but they had a good year last year.
- 11:39SPEAKER_03: Uh Penn State underperformed, and uh Penn State uh, of course, wants to be competing for the Big Ten every year.
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: Um Purdue looking to uh cause some chaos.
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: What do you what do you think initial?
- 11:54SPEAKER_03: What are your initial thoughts?
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: Sean Clifford and Aiden O'Connell is gonna be the story here.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: Um I I mean I think your assessment is I mean, we can you can kind of put it the obvious.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: Playing at playing um at home in um in Indiana, Wes Lafayette obviously is favor uh Purdue.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: Penn State has recruited for the last four or five years better than Purdue has, so they expect I expect their talented to be better.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: But the story for me is Aiden O'Connell and Sean Clifford.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: Aiden O'Connell, I still think, is the best quarterback, not named CJ Stroud in the Big Ten, and he's gonna be fired up for this showdown.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: Um and Purdue's gonna go about as far as they take him.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: I think the line's probably about right.
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, I don't, you know, I could I could see Aiden O'Connell having a big day, especially if Penn State has not solidified their things, they lost to a defensive coordinator.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: Um, it wouldn't shock me for uh I mean the home dogs typic typically farewell.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: This is this is a good upset spot.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, I don't know what's gonna happen.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I agree with you.
- 12:46SPEAKER_03: It's interesting you highlight uh the new DC for Penn State.
- 12:49SPEAKER_03: They've got Manny Diaz coming over, former head coach.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: I hate the Miami guy, forgot about that.
- 12:54SPEAKER_03: Yep, and so yeah, I think you're right, Sean Clifford, second year in the system at quarterback for Penn State versus Aiden O'Connell.
- 13:02SPEAKER_03: Uh, Purdue is is just gonna pass.
- 13:04SPEAKER_03: They're gonna pass, pass, pass, pass, pass.
- 13:06SPEAKER_03: They uh throw the ball like 60% of the time.
- 13:09SPEAKER_03: They've got no run game, they're like last in yards per carry in the Big Ten.
- 13:15SPEAKER_03: And so it's an interesting battle from a matchup standpoint, uh, because Penn State does have a great secondary.
- 13:20SPEAKER_03: They've got more talent across the board.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: As much as I love Purdue, I think this one will go to Penn State.
- 13:27SPEAKER_03: I think it's a good game.
- 13:29SPEAKER_03: It's a tough game, uh, close game.
- 13:31SPEAKER_03: I think Penn State pulls away, but I'm not getting off the Purdue bandwagon.
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: Um they've got a lot to replace at wide receiver.
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: Uh David Bell is gone, which leaves a huge hole.
- 13:41SPEAKER_03: The number one wide receiver for them last year.
- 13:44SPEAKER_03: Um I just think this is a tough matchup for them.
- 13:46SPEAKER_03: Penn State isn't ranked right now, I don't think, in the early poll, but they should probably be top 15 based on their talent and who they have, and they probably will be uh a few weeks into the season.
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: Uh so I think Purdue drops this one, but I still think they compete for a division crown based on their schedule.
- 14:04SPEAKER_03: Like I said last week, go Boilermakers.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: Boiler up.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: Good enough, fair enough.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: The other team, the other big game was it was there's actually a couple games for this podcast we're interested in on Thursday night.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: The other one, uh West Virginia at Pittsburgh.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: That one, of course, being played in, I'm assuming at Hinesfield, which is uh where the where the Steelers play.
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: Uh, this is an interesting game for a couple of reasons.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: One, this is a rivalry called the I think it's called the Backyard Brawl.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: Backyard Brawl, yep.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: Backyard brawl that hasn't been played for a long time.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: So fans who are, I mean, West Virginia Pitt fans who go way back, they have just been dying to have to get this game back on the schedule.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: So this one is a monster for the from the local fan perspective.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: And that's these are one of the things that make college football so great is having these long, long-term fans with these long-term alliances um and rivalries um being brought back.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: So I mean, from that standpoint, it's awesome.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: A couple other interesting storylines.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: Both quarterbacks, both USC transfers, uh Keaton Slovis and J2 Daniels both spent time at one point uh playing for the USC Trojans.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: So that's uh that's just good fun.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: Um uh any and what what what do you want to add?
- 15:49SPEAKER_03: Um I love the rivalry.
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: I think this this harkens back to the old Big East, yes, um, if I'm not mistaken.
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: And two of the classiest fan bases that you can find in college football, and with the proximity to one another, it just makes for such sweet, sweet action.
- 16:04SPEAKER_03: Um, I do think JT Daniels heading to West Virginia makes them an immediate threat.
- 16:09SPEAKER_03: I mean, it doesn't make them you know competing for a conference title, but he is a real shot in the arm for their offense, and I think they're gonna be pretty sneaky good this year.
- 16:18SPEAKER_03: Pitt under Narduzi obviously is always gonna have um a really good defense.
- 16:23SPEAKER_03: They bring a lot of exotic pressures, especially on third down.
- 16:26SPEAKER_03: Um, the the big question mark for them, obviously, is uh Slovis at quarterback.
- 16:31SPEAKER_03: You can't replace a Kenny Pickett.
- 16:32SPEAKER_03: I think we talked about that a couple weeks ago.
- 16:34SPEAKER_03: So it's really, you know, how quickly does he pick things up?
- 16:38SPEAKER_03: Um that'll be an interesting one.
- 16:39SPEAKER_03: What's the spread on that?
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: That one's about, I think Pitt's favored by about seven and a half in there at home.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: They're also replacing their offensive coordinator, and of course, a Blitnikov Whitner, Jordan Addison, who coincidentally is now playing for USC as well.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of USC themes in this game.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: Um and Pitt's gonna have a good defense because Pat Narduzzi does.
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm I am I I totally agree with you about West Virginia.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: One of the things that made the West Virginia teams so fun of 15 years ago, the Rich Rod years, was their their high-flying offense.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: Uh, they could just score points in bunches, move the ball around, do a lot of fun things.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: I think JT Daniels isn't that, but he will he can get their offense going in a fun way that'll make West Virginia football fun to watch.
- 17:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's a highly recruited guy.
- 17:16SPEAKER_03: He can do the job.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: He has talent.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: Um, Pitt's defense is tough, though.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: They're playing at home.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: I don't know what Pitt's offenses look like given what they're replacing, but I'm expecting Pitt to cover this one.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: I like Pitt by like 14 or so just because I think I think they are defensive stout.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: I think West Virginia's got more questions than answers.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: Jaith Daniels is the beacon of hope, and I think they'll be a fun team to watch this year, but I'm taking Pitt for my money.
- 17:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I would lean Pitt.
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: This one is actually, I would, I would, I would be careful on on this one.
- 17:47SPEAKER_03: I wouldn't put any money on it because I think Pitt might be in a little bit of an upset spot uh just because they do have so many question marks on offense.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: Uh, I think they are overrated coming into the season.
- 17:57SPEAKER_03: Um, everything is based on what they did last year.
- 18:00SPEAKER_03: You know, obviously they won uh the ACC, but they have a ton to replace uh and they just don't recruit well enough to reload like some of the teams that we talk about, um, some of those upper echelon teams.
- 18:12SPEAKER_03: So I'll take pit, um, but just barely.
- 18:16SPEAKER_03: We'll see.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: All right, let's move on.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: Let's keep it going.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: Um, the next game we're talking about is um Cincinnati at Arkansas, which typically in you know, in the in the realm of college football, that's not a particularly interesting game.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: That's a top 25 matchup in 2022.
- 18:32SPEAKER_01: Cincinnati made the playoff made the playoff last year, the first group of five team to ever make uh the college football playoff in the what, I think, at the eighth or ninth season.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: Uh so kudos to the Luke Fickle and the Bearcats, very impressive.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: Arkansas um uh has uh has had a relatively recently down run, I would say the last 10 years, although Sam Pittman, Casey Jefferson really kind of picked them up and uh had them do some pretty good things.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: This is a top 25 matchup, but both teams, in my mind, still have a lot of question marks.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: I have no idea how to peg this game.
- 19:03SPEAKER_03: I was shocked when I saw that Arkansas was only a six and a half point favorite, being that the game's played in Arkansas.
- 19:11SPEAKER_03: Um and since he is, again, reloading um after the loss of Desmond Ritter, uh, this is another game where you look at a traditionally uh, I don't know, a team that you would say maybe overperformed the previous year, a lot like Pitt, and loses you know, their Heisman candidate NFL caliber quarterback.
- 19:31SPEAKER_03: So, you know, who do they replace him with?
- 19:33SPEAKER_03: This will be um, I think the first start for Cincinnati without Desmond Ritter since like 2017.
- 19:42SPEAKER_03: He went 44 and 7.
- 19:44SPEAKER_03: So just wrap your mind around that.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: This is the first game without him at the helm, you know.
- 19:50SPEAKER_03: It's it's a huge question mark.
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: So who do they replace him with?
- 19:53SPEAKER_03: Uh they've got senior Ben Bryant.
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: Um, he's coming from eastern Michigan.
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: He was a starter there.
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: He had pretty good numbers, but nothing too eye-popping.
- 20:02SPEAKER_03: And then they've got um a sophomore dual threat guy, Evan Porter, who uh redshirted last year.
- 20:08SPEAKER_03: He was like a former 2019 Ohio Ohio State Mr.
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: Football.
- 20:12SPEAKER_03: Uh so he's clearly kind of the the high the blue chip guy, I guess you could say.
- 20:18SPEAKER_03: Um, but he's never started.
- 20:20SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, who does Luke Fickle go with?
- 20:23SPEAKER_03: I think is the biggest storyline there.
- 20:25SPEAKER_03: He doesn't want to play his hand, he hasn't said who's starting.
- 20:28SPEAKER_03: Um, so do you go with senior or do you go with the you know the unproven young talent?
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: Hard to say.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: So one thing I like that you brought up uh Fickle.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: Um the the matchup in this game, given what they're playing, I mean, Arkansas isn't replacing nearly as much.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: And I mean they lost obviously out uh wide out Traylon Burke's first round of the Titans, who's who's all worlds, you he's not walking back through the door.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: Um, but the the difference in this game is the is going to be between these two coaches.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: Both Luke Fickle and Sam Pittman are two rising stars in the college football ranks.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: I'm expecting Luke Fickle to be the next person to get that massive Big Ten job, whether it's Ohio State at some point, Michigan at some point.
- 21:08SPEAKER_03: Everyone tried to pull him away last year, and he didn't he didn't take it.
- 21:11SPEAKER_01: He stayed put with the same extension.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: It's true.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: We also the same thing about Kirby Smart and Brett Venables, and eventually when the right job came, they win.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: I my point is I think I think he is well recognized as one of the rising stars in college football, and he's probably due for a great P5 job at some point.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: At the same time, Sam Pittman, what he has done in Arkansas so fast is also super impressive.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: His stock is also rising.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: My point, these guys are both gonna have great game plans for today.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: They both have question marks they have to deal with, um, for sure.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: Um, but I could, you know, this is the the reason I have such a hard time pegging this game is I wouldn't be surprised if Luke Fickle has the master game plan and win by 14, or if Sam Pittman and his boys and uh KJ Jefferson rely on their talent, they just beat him up.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: Like I this, I don't know.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: I've I have no idea which ways this goes, but I think these two coaches um make this game particularly interesting.
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: Well, I think you gotta go with the beef in the trenches.
- 22:06SPEAKER_03: Um and typically you think SEC versus a Cincinnati, you know, that's got to lean Arkansas, right?
- 22:13SPEAKER_03: Uh Cincinnati's got one of the best offensive lines in the country.
- 22:17SPEAKER_03: They've got three all AC players returning.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: They're returning basically their whole offensive line.
- 22:22SPEAKER_03: So, regardless of which starter at quarterback they go with, he should be protected, he should have time, he should be able to uh perform a little bit.
- 22:30SPEAKER_03: That being said, I'm going KJ Jefferson.
- 22:33SPEAKER_03: How do we get this far into this game without talking about him?
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 22:37SPEAKER_03: He is an outstanding quarterback, he's Only getting better.
- 22:40SPEAKER_03: And you know, if you put these two teams in a vacuum and you don't know who's starting one on one side, and you know KJ Jefferson is on the other, and it's at home, gotta go Arkansas.
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: I'll take Cincinnati of the points just to be different.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: Um, this is and this this is really a I mean, I like what you said.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: Well, like you said, the O-line, but I know they're replacing a lot on defense.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: This is a bet on fickle just having his guys ready.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: Uh, maybe he doesn't win this one, but I think he keeps it close enough to cover.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: So we'll see.
- 23:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's gonna be a great game.
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm excited for it.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: Uh let's move on to the next one.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: Uh, Oregon.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: Oregon versus Georgia, which is one of the one of the bigger headline games, two massive programs.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: This one's 330 on ABC at the Mercedes Stadium, Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Hotlanta, Georgia, number three versus number 11.
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: Um, I think Georgia, last time I checked, where are they?
- 23:28SPEAKER_01: They are a 17-point favorite.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: Wow, it moved.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: It wasn't 17 like a week out.
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: I think it was like 14 or 15 a week ago.
- 23:35SPEAKER_03: Um, you talk about the spread for this game.
- 23:42SPEAKER_03: The two biggest games probably of the weekend are Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Oregon UGA, and both are huge numbers on the spread.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: Bigger spread bigger spreads, bigger spreads you'd like for two marquee teams.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: Uh, in storylines that you should probably know.
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: Um uh the game is being played Atlanta.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: Uh the the the brand new uh head coach of Georgia is Dan Lanning, who is uh uh Georgia's former defensive coordinator.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: So there's some tie-in there.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: The uh Oregon's new starting quarterback, Bo Knicks, uh, had his career at Auburn.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: Auburn is one of Georgia's rivalries.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: There's lots of tie-in from the Oregon team that they know already know about this team in Georgia.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: Um, so uh Oregon is obviously pretty talented roster.
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: They've got they've got two superstar linebackers.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: They are not they have recruited pretty well.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: Jordan, not as well as Georgia, but they are a talented team.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: So those are kind of the things that I would I want to talk about uh Oregon a little bit.
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: On the other side, you got Georgia, defending national champions.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: Uh they're replacing everything on defense.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: And the question for me is, is it a problem?
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: Do you think it is?
- 24:48SPEAKER_03: No, I don't.
- 24:49SPEAKER_03: Uh and the reason I don't is because everyone is overlooking how good Georgia's offense was last year and is.
- 24:57SPEAKER_03: Uh, they're gonna lean on their offense a lot more this year.
- 25:00SPEAKER_03: Um just because yeah, they're gonna have to.
- 25:03SPEAKER_03: And and that's not to say that their defense won't catch up.
- 25:06SPEAKER_03: Um, but Georgia had one of the most efficient offenses in the country last year.
- 25:10SPEAKER_03: They averaged uh 3.4 points per possession.
- 25:15SPEAKER_03: So over a field goal per possession, that was good for like fourth in the country.
- 25:19SPEAKER_03: Um, and people don't think about that.
- 25:21SPEAKER_03: I mean, that was better than Alabama last year.
- 25:23SPEAKER_03: Um, and so you know, their offense can do the job.
- 25:27SPEAKER_03: They'll just need it to do it a little bit more this year, and that's okay.
- 25:31SPEAKER_03: They can they can do it that way, I think.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: Georgia's, I mean, Georgia's team has a little hit five stars everywhere.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: We talked about them la we talked about them last week.
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: They're the kind of team that's gonna, they've recruited so well despite winning the national championship and sending God knows how many people did it to the NFL, they are still gonna be there at the end of the year.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: I'm expecting them to win this game, but I think Oregon's gonna keep it close for a couple of reasons.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: One, what Georgia did last year on defense was was like an anaconda.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: They were just, they just wrapped around you and they just choked you out.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: And there was nothing you're often, they just suffocated their opponents consistently every week.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: And that was just that was that was a product of eight NFL guys who were very well coached, in the right in position to make plays at all times, on top of their superior athletic and talented ability.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: This is gonna take Georgia's gonna get right back to that by I'm probably week seven, week week seven or eight, but it's gonna take a little bit of time for this new Georgia defense to gel.
- 26:23SPEAKER_01: And the guy who knows better to attack that defense than maybe anybody in the country, not named Kirby Smart, is Dan Lanning.
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: He coached that unit eight months ago.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: So I like Oregon to throw some wrinkles at them.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: I think Bo Knicks is also play Bo Nick has also played against Georgia a couple times, his time at Auburn.
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: Um, I think there's a lot of familiarity there that people are kind of underselling.
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: So I'm I'm thinking I think Oregon's gonna be good, they're gonna make some plays, they're gonna have some wrinkles, and uh Oregon's defense is good enough to uh to play, I think, to give George to to go toe to toe with George's George's offense at least for a little while.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: So I got I like I'm thinking Oregon the points.
- 27:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I don't disagree with you.
- 27:04SPEAKER_03: Um I do I do think that you know Dan Lanning effect um plays a big role in this, like you said.
- 27:12SPEAKER_03: I mean he knows how to how to attack the defense, he knows how you know he coached him, he was there every day, he knows tendencies, he knows how players react, he knows where they're weak, where they're strong.
- 27:23SPEAKER_03: And I think you'll see that Bo Knicks, um, he's a baller, he's he's scrappy.
- 27:29SPEAKER_03: Um it'll be interesting to see how much he's improved because you know he's one of those guys that you're saying, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, and then he like does a spin move, chucks it up in the air for a touchdown, and you're like, Yes, I knew it.
- 27:42SPEAKER_03: Um, so he's just a wild card, and he's a great, he's a fun guy to watch.
- 27:47SPEAKER_03: Um, he's he's been so unpredictable and unreliable in a lot of ways uh when he was at Auburn.
- 27:53SPEAKER_03: So we'll see how how he turns things around.
- 27:57SPEAKER_03: I think the the physicality for Georgia is is gonna be the difference.
- 28:02SPEAKER_03: Um you know, Oregon got bullied a lot last year.
- 28:05SPEAKER_03: I expect that to be the same.
- 28:07SPEAKER_03: If Georgia can just pound the ball and play defense, um it's gonna be a little bit of a bloodbath.
- 28:13SPEAKER_03: I think it's a slow burn and eventually Georgia just pulls away.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: I'll say it does give me pause when you think about what think about what happened to Oregon against Utah.
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: The Well Coach Utah team.
- 28:26SPEAKER_01: Utah punched in the mouth, and I'll tell you.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: Utah is a good team, which we're gonna talk about here in a second.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: They're not Georgia.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: They are not those, they are they don't or Utah does not have the same caliber of dudes as Georgia does.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: So it does the O O D.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, dudes.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: It does give me pause that um Oregon might get pushed around a bunch, but we'll see.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: I think Dan Lenning knows that, probably knows that better than anybody, so he's gonna be able to counter.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: So give me Oregon the points.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: Um, I mean, I'm gonna have my eyes on that game.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: I'm looking forward to it.
- 28:57SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 28:58SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, I'll take I'll take Georgia.
- 29:00SPEAKER_03: Um Georgia cover.
- 29:01SPEAKER_03: My official pick would be Georgia cover.
- 29:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: Georgia covered, three scores.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: Bam! How about it?
- 29:05SPEAKER_01: All right, let's keep it rolling.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: Uh, another another uh interesting game that's kind of flying on the radar a little bit because obviously in the shadow of the two big ones Mike just mentioned.
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: Uh, the Utah Utes traveling all the way to Gainesville to play the Florida Gators in the swamp.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: Uh Utah Utes are your Pac-12 defending champions who pretty much bring everything back.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: Cam rising, loaded defense, going to uh Florida, uh Billy Napier's uh inaugural season, first game.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: Uh Utah is a three-point favorite.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: They were paid 500 grand by Florida to come for this game.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: Usually when you do that, you expect to win.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: Maybe you don't schedule an appointment better than you.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: Um I what do you think?
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: Um I was shocked when this was a when I saw this was a two and a half point spread because to me, this is just Utah, Utah, Utah all the way.
- 29:59SPEAKER_03: The only thing that I could say is, you know, maybe there's a little bit of a it's first game jitters, it's it's flying across the country, it's the humidity in the swamp.
- 30:10SPEAKER_03: Maybe they don't get off to a hot start and the crowd takes over a little bit and they look up at halftime and it's a three-point game and they're in a dog fight.
- 30:19SPEAKER_03: Um, so I could see that happening, you know, maybe there's a couple fluky turnovers, but when you look at the rosters, I mean Utah's returning a ton.
- 30:27SPEAKER_03: They've got a proven quarterback who's a stud.
- 30:30SPEAKER_03: I mean, they're just primed to have a successful year, and Florida is quite frankly in a complete rebuild mode.
- 30:37SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, they've got Anthony Richardson, a quarterback who's super talented but hasn't proven a thing.
- 30:44SPEAKER_03: They've got zero O-line depth.
- 30:46SPEAKER_03: Um, their skill players are not on par to where they have been in the past.
- 30:51SPEAKER_03: I just think this one's Utah all the way.
- 30:53SPEAKER_03: I just don't see it any other way.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: So the swap, you know, I I a lot of me wants to agree with agree with you as somebody who has played who has has has had eyeballs in the floor program pretty closely the last 20 plus years.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't think I don't think the card so I don't think it's a complete rebuild.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: I don't think the cupboard is bare.
- 31:11SPEAKER_01: They have talent, they are Gainesville.
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: Anthony Richardson is an absolute athletic off-the-charts freak.
- 31:17SPEAKER_01: He's he is the guy where if he is, if he has a good game plan, he can stay on script, he can minimize mistakes, he could kill you a lot of ways.
- 31:25SPEAKER_01: So I I mean I think he's probably one of the more talented players.
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: But who are their skill players?
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: Who are they who's that running back?
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: Who's that wide receiver for them?
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: I these are these are I can't remember the last time I ever.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: Here's the thing.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: I can't tell you the last time I said to myself, I bet you there's no way Florida has a good receiver.
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: There's no way Florida has three running backs.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: I couldn't tell you who they are right now, but I just feel just confident that Florida's probably got them.
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: They probably got them, they always do.
- 31:49SPEAKER_01: I don't think they do.
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: Uh we'll see.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 31:52SPEAKER_01: Um I I mean I think I'm with you.
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: I like you talking about it.
- 31:54SPEAKER_03: They couldn't even scrimmage in the spring because Yeah, I saw that.
- 31:57SPEAKER_01: Because the reason they couldn't they have they have they tip teams typically have a spring game and they were so short on O-lineman due to injury and death concerns, they just didn't even have it, which is not a good sign going into the college football season, especially the SEC schedule, which is brutal.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: Uh injuries pile up.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: You're gonna want to have, you know, you you want to have 15 offensive linemen ready to go, and Florida did not have that this this spring.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: So although I I suspect Billy Napier's done a good job of shoring that up, at least as at least as well as he can.
- 32:22SPEAKER_03: Oh, I trust Napier.
- 32:23SPEAKER_03: I just don't think they have the roster right now.
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: Um Florida always does recruit really well.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: So what what what you know this might be a really good my point is maybe there is maybe that what we're gonna see tomorrow out on Saturday at this Florida team isn't the kind of the quality talent that we're used to seeing in Florida, but it will, which is a great spot for Utah.
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: You know, Utah catching them now, especially in the right time in the swamp.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: Brand new new brand new first year new coach putting in his new system.
- 32:52SPEAKER_01: Although my understanding is he pretty much brought everybody with him from UL.
- 32:55SPEAKER_01: Um, so all he's he at least will be familiar with who he's got uh uh calling the plays and doing that sort of thing.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: Um it's a I'm I'm not gonna pick this one.
- 33:07SPEAKER_01: I I really I really don't know.
- 33:09SPEAKER_01: This one's too tough.
- 33:09SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: Well, moving on.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: The swamp is just a really tough place to play.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: So we'll find out.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: Uh let's go on to the next one.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: Uh, Notre Dame at Ohio State.
- 33:18SPEAKER_01: Uh, that's one of the that's also one of the bigger games.
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: Uh this is probably this is actually the only uh top five matchup, two against five.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: Um that game is the Irish at the Buckeyes at 7:30 on ABC.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: Um, another 17-point favorite.
- 33:33SPEAKER_01: That one also went up as well.
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: That one wasn't 17 earlier, maybe 14 or 15.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: Um, this one is actually clear to me.
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: Buckeyes by a million.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: Um, I just they have the best offense in the country.
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: Uh Jackson Seth Dejba is the best receiver in the country.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: CJ Stroud might win the Heisman.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: Trevion Henderson is probably the second or third best running back in the country.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: They always score oodles of points.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: I don't, and they're playing at home, and they're playing a Notre Dame team that's frankly not that doesn't have that much.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: House is a new coach and not that much high-end talent on defense.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: What am I missing?
- 34:11SPEAKER_03: Uh, not a whole lot.
- 34:12SPEAKER_03: I mean, storylines here, Marcus Freeman era begins at Notre Dame.
- 34:16SPEAKER_03: Uh, the former DC taking over for your boy, Brian Kelly.
- 34:21SPEAKER_03: Um, so first year head coach, first year starting quarterback, and um Tyler Buckner uh going to Ohio State is probably not a good recipe.
- 34:31SPEAKER_03: They've also got their top running back gone.
- 34:34SPEAKER_03: Uh the running back room's woefully thin.
- 34:36SPEAKER_03: They've had a lot of preseason injuries.
- 34:38SPEAKER_03: Um, I think 17 and a half is probably the right um the right number or somewhere in that range.
- 34:44SPEAKER_03: And I think that Ohio State could beat them by three touchdowns, and it wouldn't mean that Notre Dame isn't you know in the top 10 or shouldn't be in the top 10.
- 34:54SPEAKER_03: You know, we talked about overreactions early on.
- 34:57SPEAKER_03: Um, they could still be that good, but I mean Notre Dame or Ohio State could just be that much better.
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because they might be they might be head and shoulders over everyone.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: Speaking of speaking of Notre Dame uh running back death, quick shout out to uh Chris Tyree, the uh the junior player of Notre Dame from Chester, Virginia, actually right down the street from you, actually.
- 35:15SPEAKER_01: So nice to see a local boy uh playing on such the grand always.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: That's pretty cool.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: That's pretty cool.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, Notre Dame has a massive following.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be a historic game.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: Now, the one thing that's interesting about this is for we've we have been here before.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: Ohio State actually has this is like this is like the only reason this is kind of interesting.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: Ohio State has a three-game losing streak to home power five conferences.
- 35:42SPEAKER_01: They lost to Oklahoma, they lost to Virginia Tech, and last year they lost to Oregon.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: Um, all three times they were top three, top four, top five, favored by a bunch and lost.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: I don't know that those have any, especially the the the Virginia Tech game was 2014, the Oklahoma game was uh Baker Mayfield, so that was a while ago as well.
- 36:05SPEAKER_01: Uh obviously Oregon was last year, but the the woes on defenses are pretty well documented.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: They hired Jim Knowles, the Oklahoma State defensive coordinator.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: Everyone seems to think they've gotten better.
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: I don't know that has anything to do with anything, but I but why did they lose those three games?
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: I I also like, is that is that anything?
- 36:23SPEAKER_01: Do we is this is this a ghost?
- 36:24SPEAKER_03: Is this I don't think that's anything, but it's an interesting tidbit uh for us to talk about.
- 36:30SPEAKER_03: I do think the Jim Knowles thing is is far more important because we've talked about Oklahoma State being basically the only team in the Big 12 that can play defense.
- 36:40SPEAKER_03: And so they they bring him on.
- 36:42SPEAKER_03: They could have hired probably anybody in the country, they bring him over, and so even if this game is lopsided, it'll be interesting to see how their defense has grown and changed under Jim Knowles, and that's gonna be what everyone's eyes are on as the season progresses because their offense is gonna be fire.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: It's the best offense in the country, I think.
- 37:01SPEAKER_01: Outside of the mighty Vanderbilt Commodores, of course, number one offense in the country, to be clear.
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: Of course.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: Um and the thing about Jim Knowles coming in is it's not like he's he it's not like he doesn't have anything to work with.
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: Ohio State last year and the year before and next year, and probably the year after, loaded with five stars.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: They've got plenty of talent.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: Jim Knowles is inherited a plethora of talent and depth at every and experience at every level.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: It just seemed like the system, whatever it was, the coaching, uh, they just couldn't give him the couldn't couldn't get them in the right spots.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: Jim Knowles is gonna fix a lot of that.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: So I expect, even if it's not a Georgia or Alabama type unit that we're expected to, I expect them to be pretty subs mar marginally improved this year, uh, this week, and then as the year goes on, I could I I imagine they're gonna get better and better and better as the season goes on.
- 37:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: So all right, good stuff.
- 37:52SPEAKER_01: All right, uh, I think it's all for the big, the big kind of uh main uh main games.
- 37:58SPEAKER_01: Well, I guess I think it's time for some homer time.
- 38:00SPEAKER_01: I think it's homer time, baby.
- 38:01SPEAKER_01: Homer time, homer time.
- 38:03SPEAKER_01: Uh I guess uh I'll start with mine.
- 38:04SPEAKER_01: I'm actually wearing my uh LSU National Championship shirt 2019, not a big deal.
- 38:09SPEAKER_01: Um, so LSU is hosting, uh hosting, they're playing uh Florida State in the Superdome in New Orleans on Sunday night.
- 38:17SPEAKER_01: This is part of their kind of home and home series with them, although it's not actually in Baton Rouge and Tallahassee.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: We're gonna fly to Orlando next year to play them.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: Uh LSU is like a three and a half point favorite.
- 38:28SPEAKER_01: Um, but this is uh this is Brian Kelly's LSU's new coaches.
- 38:33SPEAKER_01: First uh first game, first time as a first game as the LSU Tigers, taking on Mike Norvell, year three.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: You know, I don't really know what to think about this game because I because I don't know what to think about um Florida State.
- 38:47SPEAKER_01: I know what LSU's question marks are.
- 38:49SPEAKER_01: We have we're phenomenal wide receiver, we are phenomenal at the defensive line, we've got some good stuff at linebacker.
- 38:55SPEAKER_01: Everything else is a question mark.
- 38:58SPEAKER_01: Uh brand new secondary, offensive line half transferred.
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: We don't even know who the starting quarterback is, Jaden Daniels or uh uh Gerton S.
- 39:07SPEAKER_01: Byer.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: Although I think it's gonna be Jaden Daniels to come come push him to the show.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: I think it's gonna be Jaden Daniels.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: An entire new secondary.
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: We have new secondary, no special teams what whatsoever.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: Brand new special teams, new off-the-coordinator, new defensive coordinator, new head coach.
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: It's a lot of new this is a lot.
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: I was thinking about I was thinking about this, but thinking about this this all offseason.
- 39:25SPEAKER_01: This is the first time in 20 years that I can think that I can remember where LSU hasn't had at least one all-American in the secondary um or on the defensive line or somewhere.
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: This so I, you know, this is I mean, this is week one.
- 39:40SPEAKER_01: These are just two massive question marks.
- 39:42SPEAKER_01: Go ahead.
- 39:42SPEAKER_01: Sorry, I'm rambling.
- 39:43SPEAKER_03: Well, it's no, no, you're 100% correct.
- 39:46SPEAKER_03: And it's funny because FSU is in almost the exact same boat.
- 39:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, both of these teams have had massive roster turnover.
- 39:54SPEAKER_03: LSU has, I think, like 28 new faces.
- 39:57SPEAKER_03: Uh, like you mentioned, they don't even know who the quarterback's gonna be, although I do think that they probably brought Jaden Daniels in to be that guy from Arizona State.
- 40:06SPEAKER_03: Um, Florida State does know who their quarterback's gonna be, so maybe that gives them a little bit of an edge.
- 40:10SPEAKER_03: Jordan Travis has played pretty well, just hasn't had much um support around him, especially on the offensive line.
- 40:18SPEAKER_03: Uh he's thrown a lot of interceptions, but he's also made a lot of plays and he's run for his life um for most of that time.
- 40:26SPEAKER_03: So it'll be interesting to see.
- 40:29SPEAKER_03: I mean, I don't think anybody knows what to expect in this game.
- 40:33SPEAKER_03: It's it's a complete toss-up.
- 40:34SPEAKER_03: It's two huge brands in college football with complete question marks hanging over their heads.
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: And uh on both sides of the ball and all over the field.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: I couldn't agree with you more.
- 40:47SPEAKER_01: You know, one thing that one thing that uh Forest Hate really does have going for, they have a strong defensive line, so is LSU's.
- 40:52SPEAKER_01: So a lot this this might be a game where it's like who can get after the passer, who can get that, who can stop the run, who can um who can get that key turnover.
- 40:59SPEAKER_01: Um I'm I'll tell you, I'm pretty anxious.
- 41:01SPEAKER_01: If we get if it's a tight game and it gets down to a field goal and we've got some true freshmen or a transfer, because again, all of our special teams are brand new.
- 41:08SPEAKER_01: I don't love that spot.
- 41:10SPEAKER_01: Um, so I, you know, I'm ex I am excited football is back.
- 41:14SPEAKER_01: I'm obviously gonna take my Tigers because I won't um it's you're you're I'm hard pressed to do anything else, but I don't feel good about it.
- 41:20SPEAKER_01: I'll be I'd be lying to you if I said I wasn't nervous.
- 41:22SPEAKER_03: Well, there's no way to feel good about it because it's it's like reaching into a grab bag.
- 41:27SPEAKER_03: You don't have no idea.
- 41:28SPEAKER_03: I think I mean in college football, especially, it's like so many teams lose the game.
- 41:34SPEAKER_03: The other team doesn't take it from them, they just cough it up, you know?
- 41:38SPEAKER_03: And that could be the the the difference in this one.
- 41:41SPEAKER_03: Generally, I would say you gotta go LSU because, like your thoughts on Florida, their roster just has to have so much more talent, but they've had so much turnover.
- 41:53SPEAKER_03: I don't even know who these guys are.
- 41:55SPEAKER_03: No.
- 41:55SPEAKER_03: Um, I'm still going LSU, but yeah, I have no idea.
- 41:58SPEAKER_01: I appreciate that.
- 41:58SPEAKER_01: I could uh yeah, for the first time in ages, I couldn't I couldn't tell you the too deep on the secondary.
- 42:03SPEAKER_01: I've honestly that's that's that's where we are.
- 42:05SPEAKER_01: Give a turnover.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: This also, we're also I'm also suffering from, and this is true for all the things, all the things we're talking about.
- 42:10SPEAKER_01: None of these teams really got better since May, but the hype has been building all of them up for so long.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: You know, they had summer camp, and they fall camp, which they did where they got in some work, but since spring ball, it's not like any of these teams made huge improvements, but we all talk about it like we have.
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: We all talk about them like they've been improving for three months, which just is not true.
- 42:28SPEAKER_01: So with the hype coming in, um, I just it's it's gonna be there's gonna here's what's gonna happen.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: There's gonna be half the country is gonna say, Oh my gosh, we are so much better with the national championship.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: Half the country is gonna say, Oh my gosh, our team is terrible, we're going 0-12.
- 42:44SPEAKER_01: That's that's this is because this is week zero because everybody's still alive, everybody still has a shot to go to the national championship, and everybody thinks they're gonna they have a chance they they might get there, it could be their year.
- 42:52SPEAKER_01: So you never know.
- 42:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're gonna we're gonna wreck a lot of dreams in week one.
- 42:56SPEAKER_01: Hope they're not mine.
- 42:57SPEAKER_03: Always, always do.
- 42:59SPEAKER_03: Um, the the other fun thing we didn't even mention about this game, it keeps college football going a little bit longer because it's on Sunday.
- 43:07SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 43:07SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, it's it gives you Sunday night week one.
- 43:11SPEAKER_01: This is this tomorrow is five straight.
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: We have football on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: It's a five night.
- 43:17SPEAKER_01: Lenson plays on Monday, right?
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: Georgia Tech, which man, why would Georgia Tech schedule that game?
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: But anyway, that the five five five nights of days because second college football starting tomorrow.
- 43:26SPEAKER_01: So that's that's the goes to get speaking of Thursday.
- 43:29SPEAKER_01: I think you're playing tomorrow, right?
- 43:31SPEAKER_01: We are.
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: Yes, listen.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: Tennessee.
- 43:34SPEAKER_01: Go ahead.
- 43:35SPEAKER_01: Show us what we got.
- 43:36SPEAKER_03: Tennessee um hosting uh ball state.
- 43:39SPEAKER_03: Tennessee is a 35 and a half point favorite.
- 43:43SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 43:43SPEAKER_03: I'm not expecting us to learn a lot about this game.
- 43:48SPEAKER_03: Uh, it should be comfortable by halftime.
- 43:50SPEAKER_03: We should we should see a lot of new faces, a lot of rotations.
- 43:55SPEAKER_03: Um, ball state does have some some solid wide receivers, and we have a brand new, well, not a brand new secondary.
- 44:02SPEAKER_03: We have a lot of new faces in the secondary.
- 44:05SPEAKER_03: So I'm sure they'll be mixing and matching guys and looking to see how that shakes out.
- 44:09SPEAKER_03: So that'll be fun.
- 44:10SPEAKER_03: Um, I just I don't want anybody to get hurt is my hope.
- 44:14SPEAKER_01: So I obviously Tennessee has uh the Josh Hype's is here too.
- 44:17SPEAKER_01: There's a high-powered offense, they score a bajillion points a game.
- 44:20SPEAKER_01: You know, the the question for Jim for I think for most Tennessee fans, and I think I'm speaking for your most Tennessee fans, is what's the defense gonna look like?
- 44:26SPEAKER_01: Here's my question for you.
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: Of the three levels of the defense defensive line, linebacker, and secondary, which one has you both the most worried and the most excited?
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: Like what's what's the boomer bust unit where you're like we We're gonna be great if this unit is, we're gonna be terrible if this unit sucks.
- 44:42SPEAKER_01: Like what is it?
- 44:44SPEAKER_03: Um It's hard to say because the the units impact each other so much.
- 44:51SPEAKER_03: Uh like I said, we've got so many new faces in the secondary, we've got more overall depth and talent.
- 44:56SPEAKER_03: Um, but it's a question mark because we don't know which of those guys will be able to produce and which of those guys will compete at a high level.
- 45:05SPEAKER_03: Defensive line, um we have more talent and and and guys that got some run last year that should be so much better this year.
- 45:14SPEAKER_03: So I think defensive line probably has the biggest opportunity to open some eyes, especially on the edge with uh getting to the quarterback.
- 45:22SPEAKER_03: And but that might really make the secondary looks look good if um they're forcing some some picks.
- 45:27SPEAKER_01: So vice versa as well, right?
- 45:30SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 45:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I do think the the linebacker room has been solidified a little bit more.
- 45:35SPEAKER_03: Um they are not going to be amazing, but they should be a little more reliable, more solid.
- 45:41SPEAKER_03: Um Juwan Mitchell, who was a Texas transfer last year, um, who was hurt a lot of the year, he's had a fantastic spring, fantastic fall, and he should be just a plug-and-play starter that should be solid, not amazing.
- 45:55SPEAKER_03: Uh, same thing for Jeremy Banks coming back last year, made a ton, a ton, a ton of tackles, but just not that versatile, not good in coverage.
- 46:03SPEAKER_03: The linebacker crew should be fine, period.
- 46:07SPEAKER_01: So, what's the one thing you're gonna see?
- 46:08SPEAKER_01: What's the one thing you're if you could pinpoint one thing that you're looking for tomorrow that you're gonna say, oh, we're we actually might be pretty good at defense next year?
- 46:15SPEAKER_01: Was is it gonna be pitching a shutout?
- 46:17SPEAKER_01: Is it gonna be sound tackling?
- 46:19SPEAKER_01: Is it gonna be sacks?
- 46:20SPEAKER_01: Is it gonna be just pressure?
- 46:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, what's if you if you could if you could cue on one thing you'd like to see at your defense tomorrow, what would it be?
- 46:27SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be looking for no busts in the secondary because we've got a lot of new faces back there, just making sure they know what they're doing.
- 46:34SPEAKER_03: Um, and like I said, they're gonna be rotating so many guys.
- 46:37SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's your chance to show what you can do or potentially not play at all next week.
- 46:44SPEAKER_03: It's a big, big ramp up in um competition going at pit next week versus hosting ball state this week.
- 46:51SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, I don't think that I don't think you know our edge rushers are gonna show us a lot against a ball state.
- 46:57SPEAKER_03: I'm excited to see some of the skilled players, some of the new freshmen at running back, particularly, and in the slot uh at wide receiver.
- 47:04SPEAKER_03: So that'll be fun because you know some of those guys will make some plays.
- 47:07SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 47:08SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 47:08SPEAKER_01: That'll be a fun one to watch for sure.
- 47:10SPEAKER_01: All right, let's keep moving.
- 47:11SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about some uh local homers.
- 47:13SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm gonna talk about really quick local homers.
- 47:15SPEAKER_01: Can I talk about really quickly about uh UVA?
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: UVA is hosting uh University of Richmond in Charlottesville first game.
- 47:22SPEAKER_01: They're 24 and a half point favorites.
- 47:24SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't have much to say.
- 47:26SPEAKER_01: Uh this is the Tony Elliott um regime is beginning.
- 47:29SPEAKER_01: Um, I would like to see their offensive line execute well.
- 47:33SPEAKER_01: I recognize it's a whole new unit and it does not have a lot of talent, but this is U of R.
- 47:37SPEAKER_01: This is an FCS program um that should not, is it with whose front seven should not pose a lot of challenges for an even for even a middle of the pack ACC team.
- 47:46SPEAKER_01: So for me, I expect UVA to win, I expect Tony Elliott to do well, I expect Brendan Armstrong to get the ball to his guys and to score a bunch of points.
- 47:53SPEAKER_01: My question is first and foremost, is how is the offensive line going to play?
- 47:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's pretty, it's interesting that you say that because they know what they've got a quarterback.
- 48:03SPEAKER_03: Brandon Armstrong is a potential ACC player of the year candidate.
- 48:06SPEAKER_03: You know what you've got a wide receiver, you've got um Dontavian Wilkes, um, Keaton Thompson, those two combined for like over 2,000 yards and 11 touchdowns last year.
- 48:17SPEAKER_03: They're solid.
- 48:17SPEAKER_03: They return a ton of guys.
- 48:20SPEAKER_03: Um, what does their defense look like?
- 48:22SPEAKER_03: Because Tony Elliott, obviously, he's good, strong defensive mind.
- 48:27SPEAKER_03: And U of R is a decent first test.
- 48:29SPEAKER_03: It's a it's a good thing.
- 48:33SPEAKER_01: It wasn't that long ago when Bronco Meninhall came up and came up and lost this game.
- 48:36SPEAKER_01: Uh U of R has come and bit UVA before.
- 48:39SPEAKER_01: You know, the defense has is has questions.
- 48:41SPEAKER_01: You know, I only talked about the offensive line because the offensive line really is the key for UVA season, I really think, but given how solid they are everywhere else in offense, defense, they kind of have question marks everywhere.
- 48:52SPEAKER_01: So it's like is it's and they I mean they they have what they have transfers out, that's a transfers in, obviously a new defensive coordinator.
- 48:59SPEAKER_01: Uh I have no idea what to make of the defense.
- 49:02SPEAKER_01: I'm not particularly worried about a week one against U of R because frankly, whatever the defense is, assuming it's not amazing and assuming it's not absolutely putrid, and it's probably not, it's probably somewhere between the middle.
- 49:14SPEAKER_01: The defense is probably gonna be fine.
- 49:15SPEAKER_01: The question is is UVA season, if they're gonna challenge anybody for anything for a bowl for seven wins, it's gonna be the offensive line maturing quickly.
- 49:24SPEAKER_01: Um, so hopefully U of R is a low hurdle, easy test that they can smoke.
- 49:28SPEAKER_03: So that's yeah, I think it will be.
- 49:30SPEAKER_03: I think this is let Brennan Armstrong and your and your top wideouts do their thing for a little bit until it's comfortable, and then find your guys.
- 49:37SPEAKER_03: Find some other guys that can help you down the road.
- 49:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because a lot of those guys are green.
- 49:41SPEAKER_01: Let's get some snaps, get some, get some grit, get some, get some dirt.
- 49:45SPEAKER_01: Uh, hopefully, hopefully start to get some comfortable and some experience.
- 49:48SPEAKER_01: Really, really important at this level.
- 49:50SPEAKER_01: Um, experienced comfortable players can really make all the difference.
- 49:54SPEAKER_01: All right, moving on.
- 49:55SPEAKER_01: Uh, last but certainly not least, we've got uh Virginia Tech at ODU.
- 50:00SPEAKER_01: Uh Mike, let's hear some thoughts about that.
- 50:04SPEAKER_03: What were you thinking scheduling a game at ODU?
- 50:07SPEAKER_03: I don't think I've ever even played.
- 50:09SPEAKER_03: I don't even know where the ODU can be playing.
- 50:11SPEAKER_03: It's in Norfolk.
- 50:12SPEAKER_03: It's in Norfolk.
- 50:12SPEAKER_03: Somebody get me Virginia Tech's athletic director on the phone.
- 50:16SPEAKER_03: Why are you going to ODU?
- 50:18SPEAKER_03: It's that's okay.
- 50:19SPEAKER_03: Besides that, that's that's just a dumb, dumb thing for them to do as a program.
- 50:24SPEAKER_03: It's a lose-lose situation.
- 50:26SPEAKER_03: Last time, speaking of which, last time they went to ODU, they lost.
- 50:30SPEAKER_03: Oh, they lost that game.
- 50:31SPEAKER_03: I forgot about that.
- 50:32SPEAKER_03: You're right.
- 50:33SPEAKER_03: Don't love that.
- 50:34SPEAKER_03: Don't love that.
- 50:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that was uh when did I find that out?
- 50:37SPEAKER_01: That was 2018, I think.
- 50:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that wasn't that long ago.
- 50:41SPEAKER_01: I mean two different regimes, but you know, obviously it's happened, so it could happen again.
- 50:45SPEAKER_01: Uh one interesting thing I really like about this coach, both uh Virginia Tech coach and the ODU coach know each other really well.
- 50:52SPEAKER_01: They were both on staff together at um Penn State and Vanderbilt.
- 50:57SPEAKER_01: They're both on Franklin staff, at least for a little bit together.
- 51:00SPEAKER_01: So these guys know each other really well, which is super interesting.
- 51:03SPEAKER_01: Um, I think you know, having kind of two coaches that are like, you know, former colleagues, former friends, uh that's a that's an interesting wrinkle.
- 51:10SPEAKER_01: You know, otherwise, let's face it, I mean, obviously the hookie fans are gonna be excited, but otherwise not a particularly um sexy game this week.
- 51:19SPEAKER_03: No, it's a sexy game if you're a fan of one of these programs because it's in-state uh bragging rights.
- 51:26SPEAKER_03: Everybody who goes to ODU knows somebody from Virginia Tech and vice versa.
- 51:30SPEAKER_03: And the spread's only seven and a half for tech, which is crazy to me.
- 51:34SPEAKER_03: Tech, you've got a first-year head coach, you're replacing your quarterback, you're you've got uh uh you're replacing your top two wide receivers from last year, your top running back.
- 51:44SPEAKER_03: Um they've got kind of a tough matchup here.
- 51:48SPEAKER_03: ODU was a sneaky good team last year.
- 51:50SPEAKER_03: This is their first year entering into um the Sun Belt, and they've got 17 starters back, including all they've got four offensive linemen, both of their top rushers who combined for 1,600 yards, and their quarterback.
- 52:04SPEAKER_03: That is the recipe for an upset, unfortunately.
- 52:09SPEAKER_03: I mean, am I wrong?
- 52:11SPEAKER_01: It could happen.
- 52:12SPEAKER_01: I got a lot of I got a lot of face in Brent Pry.
- 52:14SPEAKER_01: He's gonna play good defense.
- 52:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, I don't think it's gonna take him long to continue because he has always heally he really is going to uh reinvigorate the fan base and bring back that kind of beamer ball uh type of defense pretty quickly.
- 52:26SPEAKER_01: So I I think the defensive on Virginia Tech side is probably enough for ODU.
- 52:30SPEAKER_01: Um, I could see them not covering for sure.
- 52:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, being being tech being seven-point favorites, but I'm I don't know.
- 52:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, you're gonna have a hard time convincing me to bet up to bet on ODU.
- 52:39SPEAKER_03: So I'll take the can I give you one more interesting little wrinkle?
- 52:42SPEAKER_03: Of course.
- 52:44SPEAKER_03: So you know we talked about Grant Wells when we talked about our homer time transfer uh situation.
- 52:49SPEAKER_03: So he is the quarterback that transferred uh to Virginia Tech from Marshall.
- 52:53SPEAKER_03: Guess who Marshall played last year?
- 52:55SPEAKER_03: Old Dominion University.
- 52:57SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 52:57SPEAKER_01: So he's already seen the film on these guys.
- 52:59SPEAKER_03: He's seen them, yeah.
- 53:00SPEAKER_03: He went for 299 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions, and had a quarterback rating of 31.
- 53:06SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 53:07SPEAKER_03: Didn't do too well.
- 53:09SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 53:10SPEAKER_03: Well, yeah.
- 53:10SPEAKER_03: Marshall pulled it out in overtime, but come on.
- 53:13SPEAKER_01: So I don't know.
- 53:14SPEAKER_01: Maybe this is good, maybe this is a spot for him where he's like, I gotta make good on this.
- 53:17SPEAKER_01: I've I'm better than this team.
- 53:18SPEAKER_01: Maybe this is maybe this is a maybe this is a spot where he he's saying he's move he's got that uh those stats on the on the bulletin board in the weight room, the film room, getting ready for this.
- 53:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, when he was at Marshall, he surf circled the ODU game.
- 53:31SPEAKER_01: Uh good stuff.
- 53:32SPEAKER_01: Uh so who are you taking?
- 53:33SPEAKER_01: You're taking Virginia Tech to ODU to cover?
- 53:37SPEAKER_03: I don't know, man.
- 53:38SPEAKER_03: Uh I I think I have to.
- 53:40SPEAKER_03: I mean, I spent way too much time looking at this game, and everything I looked at was like, dang, man, Virginia Tech's in trouble.
- 53:46SPEAKER_03: Uh it's Virginia Tech's defense against ODU's offense, and it's ODU at home.
- 53:50SPEAKER_03: I just think they've got a little bit of juice coming into this one.
- 53:53SPEAKER_03: Um, they're giving off some of those old school JMU vibes, you know, it's that upset city and state.
- 53:59SPEAKER_03: I just think ODU.
- 54:01SPEAKER_03: I mean, I it's not an indictment on Brent Pry if he loses this game.
- 54:04SPEAKER_03: This happens to a lot of first year head coaches.
- 54:07SPEAKER_03: First game head coaches.
- 54:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 54:10SPEAKER_03: I just, yeah.
- 54:11SPEAKER_03: I unfortunately, I hate to say it, hokey fans, but I I think ODU might have a little bit of an edge.
- 54:16SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 54:17SPEAKER_03: We'll see.
- 54:18SPEAKER_03: I'll just pick them to I won't pick him to win outright.
- 54:20SPEAKER_03: Let's just pick them, pick them for the points.
- 54:21SPEAKER_01: Okay, let's do it.
- 54:22SPEAKER_01: That's good.
