- 3:16y'all tonight. Right. So me and this author, I've been following her
- 3:22on Facebook for the longest, okay, and she's one of I gotta feel
- 3:27that she's one of those authors you can sit down and talk to about her
- 3:30book anybody else's book. But believe you me is about to be a good
- 3:34conversation. Okay. So again, welcome to another Saturday Night with your girl
- 3:38Ssie book y'all eight four three, and we are bringing war tonight. Yes,
- 3:46y'all, we talking war because you know the title of her book is
- 3:50called It's War Behind You Now, ladies, y'all know, if y'all got
- 3:54a man to say something like that to you. I mean, what you're
- 4:00gonna do. You're gonna ride or die or you're gonna run away. So
- 4:03we are going to to talk to the author of this War behind You.
- 4:08Author is Candas. Come on up, girly, come on up, Hi,
- 4:16Hey, how are you? I'm good? How are you? I
- 4:20am good? Good? Good? So before we get into this book and
- 4:26we talk about Breeze and Lena, right, all right, so before we
- 4:32talk about them too and the stuff they got going on, tell us a
- 4:35little bit about yourself. And my name is Authur's can or can I go
- 4:41about Author's candy. I've been writing for about nine years now. I'm originally
- 4:46from your Alabama, but I now live in TuS School, so roll tied
- 4:49people. I have about twenty five books available, and I write urban romance
- 4:59and children's books. I'm also an avid reader, so yes, I will
- 5:04read it. Sometimes I have to remind myself that I'm an author because I
- 5:08will sit and read all day. But other than that, it's just me
- 5:14and my little puffy and we'll be reading. Okay, now you said you're
- 5:20a romance author, I am children's author. Yes, that's two different spectrums.
- 5:29Watch Keen first The Romance or the children's The Romance. So the children's
- 5:33books are actually written by my eight year old nephew, Jeremiah, and I
- 5:39just type up what he says, and we know he gets his author credit
- 5:45on his books. And yes, he signs his books and everything, and
- 5:49he does. When I go to events, I take his books too,
- 5:53and he signs them before I get there if he can't come. So yeah,
- 5:57that's how it works out. Know what, we might have to talk
- 6:01to your nephew, because in August, I'm doing shows that are dedicated to
- 6:05children's books because it's back too, and I'm a librarian. I would love
- 6:13to have little Man on my show. I think that'd be so cool.
- 6:15We can definitely set that up. And his birthday is in August two,
- 6:19so he would love that. All, okay, me and we have to
- 6:25talk after the show. I would love to have little Man on my show.
- 6:28Oh my god, that's so sweet. And you know what, as
- 6:32a mother and having two sisters, I would like to say thank you,
- 6:39because you know, we don't honor the aunties a lot, you know,
- 6:44and in my family, we don't say Happy Mother's Day. We say happy
- 6:46Woman's day, because when they get all our nerves, we send them to
- 6:50them. And if your nephew is anything like this nine year old, like
- 6:58I run in by my house and I apologize, he's fired, and his
- 7:05siblings like Jeremiah will sit and literally talk to me about book ideas. The
- 7:11other day, like the other night, we were sitting around and he just
- 7:15gave me like a three whole little book series right there as were talking,
- 7:19and he was like, you're gonna are you gonna write this down? T
- 7:21T and put it on your pewter. Let's get to your job. But
- 7:30you know, thank you, thank you for doing that. You woke And
- 7:32he has his own publishing and everything, honey, he don't. Now I
- 7:38feel bad. He has his own publishing, yes, ma'am. Miss Elaine
- 7:45Jenkins is his is his publisher. She's an urban romance author. Is well.
- 7:49He called her his book lady, so he will call her and tell
- 7:54like, T T. Can you call my book lady so I could talk
- 7:58Elaine Jenkins? Mm hmm, she's on my pu she is. Yeah,
- 8:11it's war behind you. Yes. First of all, let's talk about this
- 8:15title. How did you come up with a title like that? My my
- 8:20publisher actually came up with it because she didn't. I'm not good with titles.
- 8:28Okay, So a lot of times I'll either start writing a book and
- 8:33then write her and be like, hey, this is what this book is
- 8:37about, give me a title, or I write one of my pants sisters,
- 8:41and so usually that's how that goes. And if she'll send me real
- 8:46quick, no, ma'am, no, ma'am. So can I ask what
- 8:50title did you have for? I wanted it to be called Creeping with the
- 8:54Plugs Daughter, And the only reason she didn't let me she felt like it
- 9:00gave way too much of the story. So she said she liked it,
- 9:05but it was it's a bit much, you know, won't keep them in
- 9:07suspense sometime, so we changed it. But it's more behind you worked out
- 9:11perfectly. As soon as I saw it, I was like, yeah,
- 9:13I love it. I like that. I like the suspense to it.
- 9:18I mean, because she's right putting it all out there. But I would
- 9:22have never yeah, all right, all right. So I always ask are
- 9:33your characters people that you know? Or they're just people who are talking to
- 9:39me in your head? And they just came and took up and this book
- 9:43they are people who were talking in my head. But I do have some
- 9:46books who I base stuff loosely off real people, especially somebody who makes me
- 9:54mad, and I have to go right to kill scene right quick. So
- 9:56yeah, nothing to kill him in the book. You know, I'm mad
- 10:00at you. You dying in the next chapter. Listen, I can't do
- 10:03it. I can get away with it that way. I can kill you
- 10:07off in the book, make me a little money, get my anger out,
- 10:09and we go on to the next kid. You know what, I
- 10:13never thought of it that way. That is the most genius. You get
- 10:16away with it, you make money off it, and you get your anger
- 10:20out. Get no kudos to you, because I would have never thought of
- 10:22it that way. When I first got it out, I wrote nothing but
- 10:26qu see, I wrote nothing but suspense books and actually had to sit me
- 10:31down and have a long talk with me, like six, we're not gonna
- 10:33keep doing it, okay, but everybody, it's the man on the corner.
- 10:39Look at you wrong, You're dying. Like, so, what started
- 10:46your journey with writing this novel? Is it things that happen? I know
- 10:52you say you have the characters in your head, but like, how do
- 10:56you start off. Music inspires me a lot. I hear a song and
- 11:01be like, hey, and you know, Kevin Gas got this song plug
- 11:05daughter, and I was telling Kevin Gates with the characters, but it's talking
- 11:11to my head. I was like, Okay, this is how we can
- 11:13do this. Switch this up and do this and do that. Okay,
- 11:18yeah, we can do this. So you have music in the background playing
- 11:22while you're writing, or you need it completely silent. No, I have
- 11:26to have music when I'm writing. If I don't have my headphones on and
- 11:30in my own little world and not knowing where I am, just sitting with
- 11:33my laptop, I cannot write. Wow, Like, how long can you
- 11:39go? Like how long can you have a session like that? I've done
- 11:43it for hours, Like as long as I'm taking a good play this on
- 11:48Pandora going and I will sit there and write right right right, just be
- 11:52in my own little world. I bothering nobody for hours. Oh no,
- 11:58okay, I see locks in a suit and I see nothing but swags.
- 12:09Tell us a little bit about Breeze. Breeze is one of my favorite characters
- 12:13because he doesn't he's not over the top, you know, he stays in
- 12:18his own lane. He's not a flashy drug deally. He don't want everybody
- 12:22to see what kind of cars he got, how many women he can get,
- 12:28Like, he just wants to stay in his own little corner and make
- 12:31his money and not be bothered. And he got an exit strategy, like
- 12:35he don't want to be in a dope game fever. He saw businesses and
- 12:39he he only really only did it because it was a family business, Like,
- 12:45had it enough be for that, I think Breeze would have been just
- 12:48like a little shop owner or something normal guy. But I love how laid
- 12:54back he is. And that's the thing that's unique about your book is that
- 12:58the care that has an exit game. He has an exit out of the
- 13:03game, you know, And a lot of people don't do that. They
- 13:07just have their character be fifty sixty years old and they still on the street.
- 13:11But your character has an agenda and know why he's doing it. Okay.
- 13:16So this is like one of those questions that I pose to a group
- 13:22of friends with me who read, like does that make it okay? You
- 13:28know that the fact that he's in the business and he has an exit plan,
- 13:33Like, so I like that because it's great that you can have that
- 13:41component in it. It leads to great conversations. Mm hmm, Lina,
- 13:50I don't like her. Why No, Lena was just but you got to
- 14:01think about her life before. That wasn't the word I wanted to use.
- 14:05You know what I'm saying by so hard on her because like her mama was,
- 14:16she had a hard life. She got taken from her her father.
- 14:18Who would had he not had he been in her life the whole time she
- 14:24she probably would be even more spoiled than what she was, but she would
- 14:28not have had to be as hardcore as she was before. Like I blame
- 14:35her mama, like I want Oh. It took everything in me. Now
- 14:39I thought you would kill her this sound I wanted to sew so bad that
- 14:48actually kept saying, you don't need to kill her, mama. You don't
- 14:52have her mama here, her mama, b listen. It was taking everything
- 15:03and me not to just have one of them prisoners going there and slip her
- 15:05throat. It was, but I did get my get back at the end.
- 15:13I just didn't breeze and Lena just seemed like they weren't in the same
- 15:22world, but in two different, two different sizes of it. Because she
- 15:28was new to his world. Like she knew nothing about her father, she
- 15:33thought he was dead, so when she came into their world, like,
- 15:37okay, her stepdaddy was a nickel and dimer, but he wanted nowhere near
- 15:41on the level that breathing and her father was so all that was new to
- 15:46her, and having security escort her places, having drivers and stuff like,
- 15:50she wan't used to all that. She was a stripper and she had only
- 15:54fans tape, so she she wasn't used to it, so it took her
- 16:00a minute to adjust to it. That's why she's seeing spoiled because she's just
- 16:03like leaving alone, like I just want to be normal. But her daddy
- 16:07is like, no, you're gonna be the princess that you are I know.
- 16:11And I was like, okay, she she's a I see you trying
- 16:18to conform the but it ain't working. But so Whi's book two. I
- 16:33don't think they need a book too. I don't think I think everybody got
- 16:38closure. The only somebody who probably didn't was Trinity or maybe the uncle.
- 16:47But neither one of them were talking to me outside of this book, like
- 16:51I'm not gonna force it, so I didn't see the need for a spinoff
- 16:56or a part. Really was kidding her, Like, yo, I got
- 17:04something to say in this book. If thought Trinity, we wow, she
- 17:10you sure need her to come on because I thought about hook getting up with
- 17:18Breeze's cousin, but then he started getting all my nerves in the book.
- 17:22So no, that didn't work out. Preeze's cousin. Yeah, name again,
- 17:30Josiah, Yeah, Joe he oh, he got on my nerves.
- 17:34He got on my nerves. Got he got. That would be so much
- 17:41drama between she would kill him. Yeah that alone. Yeah, she no,
- 17:49that that'll be novella because she wouldn't last one hundred pages with him.
- 17:53I can't see it. I can't see it. So we're gonna take a
- 17:57break real quick, and we get to have fun with the questions. I
- 18:00didn't see you. But you like music, so I'm pretty sure you're gonna
- 18:04like the second half. So you guys are gonna take a break, come
- 18:07back. We're gonna finish talking to Miss Canthus real quick. You guys,
- 18:22okay, we can keep on going. So my second half of my show,
- 18:29I like to bring mainstream into the show. Okay, and you like
- 18:34music, m hm. So let's bring it. We'll bring it to this
- 18:41error, which oh god, I hate the music of this era, but
- 18:45we're gonna work with it. Do you see Being Breeze? How do I
- 18:56see rap star? We'll do rap first, honestly, Dave who Dave who
- 19:07the devil is? That he has my favorite song by him he has with
- 19:15Chris Brown called perfect and what's his name? Because I do look mm hmm.
- 19:23That's why I see Van Breeze Dave East, because Dave like laid back
- 19:29and out the way. Okay, let's see Dave. Ye. Yeah,
- 19:41I can't I can't see yeah, h I apologize everyone, I'm sorry.
- 19:52Yeah, I'm sitting up here to look at what the book bag? And
- 19:53yeah mm hmm. Okay, okay, so let's take it back. Let's
- 19:59take into my era that I like nineties hip hop? Who would you see
- 20:07nineties? Let me thank you? I see I see Q Tip. I
- 20:18don't like you, Tip. You don't like the vibrant, the vibrant think
- 20:23mmmm. I wouldn't let him be one, so be mace before I let
- 20:30him be CUTI Mace. Well, okay, niece is very calm, rights
- 20:41very or shine shine you remember no rapper. Yes, now you did that.
- 20:49You did that. I can see Shine even in the character and how
- 20:55you describe him in the book. I can see shine. I can see
- 20:57shine, Lena, let's get her R and B. I was thinking Monica
- 21:06because Monica can have a little stuck up attitude that time, either Monica or
- 21:11Cusha Cole Yo, you might have hit it on the neck with the Kisha
- 21:18cold. But then because her attitude and how she acts, possibly even King
- 21:27Michelle listen, because she just kills all your care I be need you seeing
- 21:37me over. It's like you're not killing your boy you want to kill even
- 21:44though yeah, she is irritated, especially when she's been on locke and hip
- 21:47hop and she'd be just so missy. Yeah, I can't. I can't.
- 21:53Yeah, you can't. So if you can have any director make this
- 22:02movie, it's war behind you. Who would you think would make your book
- 22:08and do it great? Justice? Who? Oh? Intense hands down?
- 22:15Yeah, hands down? Either her or untamed hands down like you untamed?
- 22:22Yes, yes, yes, And I would even go as far as I
- 22:29think it's my the lady who did the Purple paper Heart movie. I can't
- 22:33think of her name, but intense and Untanged are my two top two.
- 22:41Like, if I could work with anybody to do a movie for me,
- 22:45it would be one of those purple heart movie art. It's called paper Heart,
- 22:52paper Hearts. Okay, let's see that one doesn't ring a bell,
- 22:57but we're gonna find out who it is. A stop a book called paper
- 23:02Heart. Oh okay, I see you, I see you. I So
- 23:17while I'm looking at um, how do you feel about the newest thing of
- 23:23a lot of the urban books becoming movies on two bs? I love it
- 23:30because if I'm I'm like when I'm sitting there watching tube and be like I
- 23:33wrote, I read that book. Yes, yes, And a lot of
- 23:37people they're not too fond of it because they feel that the the authors are
- 23:45not getting the correct uh the the put it like this money right. I
- 23:53totally understand it. And like I told one lady, I said, I
- 23:56totally understand that. I said, but get how many readers that you have
- 24:02gained? Yes, because you took the time out to start move Now.
- 24:10I'm like, you know, look at Tyler Perry. If we see Tyler
- 24:15I can do bad all by myself versus the last play he did. There's
- 24:18a big vast difference in maturity level. The you can see the growth progress.
- 24:30So I love that new thing of a lot of the urban books becoming
- 24:36too b movies. That's my next goal, like to get one of my
- 24:40books turned into a movie script and everybody's hands and if it go to Toby,
- 24:45Amazon, Original, whatever you gotta go to, like people, I'm
- 24:48gonna see a book that I wrote turned into a movie and people are gonna
- 24:55know who I am. Like you're gonna be able to pull up on tube
- 24:56and see my book is now a movie. And that right there is rewarding
- 25:03in itself, because how many adors that are unlocks. Yes, yes,
- 25:10you're so right. So if you could choose any book of yours, which
- 25:15one would it be? I wrote a book and I guess it would be
- 25:22now it would be called like a thriller, and it's and it's called Bonded
- 25:29by Blood. And the first book needn't do so well, but the second
- 25:37one a lot of people were like, oh my god, I would do
- 25:40that one. And then I would do a book I released not too long
- 25:44ago called Scars of a Single Mother. I will all right, Scars of
- 25:51a Single Mother first, because more women can relate to it and then bonded
- 25:57by blood. Okay, so it looks like you have a question. So
- 26:03somebody would like to know what is your writing process like? So usually,
- 26:08like the ideas will come to me, and I'll write out my characters,
- 26:14their descriptions, where I want the book to take place, and important stuff
- 26:18from the plot that I forget because my mind is terrible. Like I have
- 26:22to have my notebooks in beside me the entire time i'm writing, because I'll
- 26:26forget how old my characters are. Sometimes I'll forget what they look like.
- 26:32Sometimes I have to have all that right now, and then I get my
- 26:34laptop and my headphones, my music. I have to have my Pepsi and
- 26:37my honeybuns and my snacks, and I'm good to go. She said,
- 26:41Pepsi and honey bun talking about Now, are you working on anything on anything
- 26:51right now? I'm actually working on two books right now. Yes, can
- 26:56you tell us some little little bit mate. One of them is my first
- 27:06time I'm doing an older woman younger man type story, and it's gonna be
- 27:11leaning more towards theoretic side, and I never stepped into that before. So
- 27:18that's all I can give you. I can't get you up one. I
- 27:21ain't ready yet. You have to keep me updated. You already know that,
- 27:26so I already know how to be updated by your books. So how
- 27:30about you tell everybody else how they can follow you on social media if you
- 27:37have any book events coming up. You know, let's go ahead and give
- 27:40us the rundown so we can be ready for that older woman young man thing
- 27:45going on. Keep up with me on Facebook. I post more about my
- 27:48books on Facebook and Instagram. On my Facebook is just my name, Candice
- 27:52Tolliver, and then my Instagram is author is Candice and I'll put like my
- 27:56character visuals I put when I do sneak peeks from my book, they'll go
- 28:03on there. And so that's how you'll know my covers go to Facebook first.
- 28:08I'm not going to any events right now, but that is something I
- 28:15do want to do later on in a year. Okay, never know,
- 28:19you might come down to Charleston in October and I found out we got someplace
- 28:26in the shop we're supposed to be doing. So know, yeah, I
- 28:32will send you more information, but I think you've being with us Tonay letting
- 28:38us know about Breeze and Lena. I'm gonna have to get Lena some credit,
- 28:49man, because she was acting like a total you know whatn't that book?
- 28:53But she her mama was, I know, but she showed her.
- 28:59But then book Man, even though mom was fron like before we even leave,
- 29:04how did you get her character to be the way that she was?
- 29:11Her or her mama her mom? I had to have a reason as to
- 29:15why her daddy hadn't seen her in years? And what better way than I
- 29:22have a bitter baby mama, better baby mama. So you know, strug
- 29:26dealers, they get the women they see dollar signs. They want marriage so
- 29:30they could be secured for life. And Ryland wasn't we it? So Carmelina
- 29:36took her baby and she did and we's money, So like I had to,
- 29:44I had to make it a reason why the daddy didn't see her.
- 29:48And like I said, what better way and what easier way and more drama
- 29:53field way than a better baby mama? And that she loved up too.
