- 0:17Welcome everybody to the third episode of Cards and Categories. This is Mike cool
- 0:22Art here from Rasball, and I'm joined once again and as always by Jeremy
- 0:27Breuer, also from Rasball. Jeremy, how are you doing today? I'm
- 0:31doing just fantastic. How about yourself? I'm doing great. It's been quite
- 0:35the crazy day of baseball as we record here on Wednesday, kind of been
- 0:38an afternoon of ups and downs. Saw a couple of Nolan Gorman homers,
- 0:42a couple of trade rumors and trades go down. A'med Rosario just went to
- 0:49the Dodgers before this recording happened, And it's been reported that Otani is off
- 0:55the block, so I kind of thought that Arnie Moreno might pull him back,
- 0:58and now he's a actually off the block. So I guess I don't
- 1:03think we should be too surprised by this one, because that was pretty much,
- 1:06you know, calling the calling the season. If if they sent Otani
- 1:10elsewhere or might be calling it a few few seasons, that fan base is
- 1:14going to revolt if they if they did anything there. Yeah, and especially
- 1:18from the financial applications, I just never saw it happening. Um, if
- 1:21you do want to check out something really cool you should listen to. Effectively,
- 1:25Wild put out a like a fake Otani trade like podcast where they had
- 1:30a bunch of different writers played the roles of the different gms and calling Ben
- 1:36Clements who played Perimonesian. And what they did is they liked did all these
- 1:41recordings and voicemails to do trade offers. It's uh, it's a fun episode.
- 1:45You should check it out. And yeah, else too, I also
- 1:48check that out. I know. I saw an article over I think it
- 1:51will be dot Com the other day about you know, ten proposals for Otani
- 1:55and I read through every single one. I'm like, I would reject every
- 1:57single one of these. Like I'm like this point, if I'm like in
- 2:00the five top one hundred prospects, I don't think there's a deal to be
- 2:01added. So it's just not that economics weren't there. Yeah, And I
- 2:07mean I think lots of people are probably seeing the same people on those lists
- 2:09for those Otani trades, which I mean can all be scrapped now. I
- 2:13guess with the Diamondbacks and especially just any of those other runners, some people
- 2:19are trying to put them into the reds, which would be a little far
- 2:23fetched in Cincinnati. But here's a this is some good podcast segway right here.
- 2:27The Baltimore Orioles were one of those people that were or one of those
- 2:30teams that were rewarded to beginning Otani. And now that they're in first place,
- 2:36I was thinking, what about Felix Bautista for the al Si Young?
- 2:42I know it sounds bananas. I never thought of reliever would win another Si
- 2:45Young? Um, I'm not is Ganya maybe the last one too? I
- 2:49think I wouldna say, Eric Ganya. I think it was the last one
- 2:51to pull that off. And that's that's I'm not gonna guess some of the
- 2:53years that's been, it's been, that's been a while. Early. Yes,
- 3:00and so Philix Bautista for Cy Young is a very interesting case. Make
- 3:07make your case. I want to hear it. Okay, Well, the
- 3:09first thing is you need to do is go to fangraphs, sort the al
- 3:15pictures by war, get that leaderboard and you'll be like, WHOA like Felix
- 3:19Bautisa, he's not even on this. What a what a waste, what
- 3:22a joke. But with then what you need to do is flip off qualified
- 3:24innings and if you flip off qualified innings, I just dropped it to twenty.
- 3:29You can drop it to whatever makes Bautista qualify. He's currently at forty
- 3:34nine innings. He then ranks ninth in the al in war as a reliever
- 3:38right now in forty nine innings with two point five warm. Yeah, here's
- 3:46the nine or here's the eight dudes in front of him. He's ninth,
- 3:49and the eight dudes are who I would actually consider more of the front runners
- 3:53right now, Kevin Gaussman, fran Bervaldez, Sonny Gray, Zach Eflin,
- 3:58Nathan Eovaldi, Garrett Cole, George Kirby, Pablo Lopez. Then right there
- 4:03Felix Bautista, who is at two point seven two point five two point seven
- 4:11is Papo Lopez, and that's just behind Gaussman at three point eight leading the
- 4:15board. But the stats for Felix Bautissa are absolutely insane as seventeen point six
- 4:23K nine. He's got twenty eight saves, five five wins all and forty
- 4:27nine innings along with a point nine two RA one point four five fifth.
- 4:32I mean, why not, like if there was gonna be a season that
- 4:36was a reliever season that won as young, this would be it. I
- 4:40mean, the Saves are maybe a little bit low, but seventeen and a
- 4:43half K nine and no one else is really separating themselves from the pack.
- 4:46I mean, it's gonna just take a little slip from Framber or Kevin Gaussman,
- 4:50and I don't see why Felix Bautisa shouldn't get it if the Orioles win
- 4:55the East. Yeah, I think that's actually what probably comes down to is
- 5:00think that he has to make an impact at the right time, like he
- 5:03uh, you know the Orioles that they're getting notoriety because they are, they're
- 5:06playing really well, got a lot of young, exciting guys coming up.
- 5:11I think that he needs had like a signature moment of something, which is
- 5:14completely given what everything every talks about anymore about stats and what you're trying to
- 5:17accomplish. But you know, even just the last few days, he's just
- 5:20gone crazy as far as you know, he's he's pitches like four last five
- 5:25days, Uh, basically shut everybody down. I think they could have used
- 5:29him the last night too, because I think they blew the lead when he
- 5:31was actually trying to get some rest. But I think if he goes out
- 5:35late in the season and really clinches a few you know, good games against
- 5:40you know, competitive teams or you know, actually you know, clinches a
- 5:46you know the division. Uh and like you know, strikes out the side
- 5:49of I don't facing the yank he's and strikes out the side. I don't
- 5:53know what the schedule. I don't look at the schedule, but I think
- 5:55he is one of those signature moments like that's gonna be like that something that
- 5:59could push him over the top. Does Is it gonna happen? I don't
- 6:01think so. I just I don't think that anybody's gonna sign up with that
- 6:04because even with Ganya, he had to he had to pull down on a
- 6:08record of a number of saves when when he did that, which was just
- 6:14crazy. If there's not the saves with the number of Indians secutive saves,
- 6:17I think is what it was. Yeah, so, um, I don't
- 6:21know who if it's not aboutis to the question is who is it? Because
- 6:25there's it's a pretty clouded, crowded leaderboard as as you mentioned. Yeah,
- 6:30I mean I think Gassman would beat my vote right now. But the Blue
- 6:34Jays, if they can't get it going and like I said, the Orioles
- 6:38winning the East is a lot of fun right now, and they're a really
- 6:43just dynamic team. I enjoyed putting them on. I love watching the Orange
- 6:46Black flow, and I mean, I think that might really help Bautista's case,
- 6:50especially when you do consider I mean, I guess Kyle Gibson now that
- 6:55I'm looking at this leaderboard is fifteenth in four on this pitching leaderboard, but
- 6:59they're there's really nobody else. Oh now they look again, Kyle Bradish,
- 7:02I guess is actually at twentieth. But Felix Bautista like is the Orioles pitching
- 7:09staff. And so it's kind of crazy that like they're designed with like the
- 7:13workhorse at the back, because I think he sets the tone the way that
- 7:16like a number one starter would. Yeah, I tend to agree, and
- 7:20that's actually you're you're right. It's almost crazy to see what they've done with
- 7:25the pitching that they have not had uh in in that rotation. So I
- 7:29mean, if if i'm if I'm picking my probably top two at this point
- 7:32is Nathan Evaldi out of out of Texas or Shane McClanahan for the Raise.
- 7:39I think those two are the ones that I would be looking at it.
- 7:41But it's a tight race. I think McClanahan, you know, he got
- 7:44hurt and so he needs to finish strong and finish healthy. Uh. Vivaldi,
- 7:48he's he's tried tailed off a little recently, but I think if he
- 7:53finishes strong, he's got a good shot as well. But that that's anybody's
- 7:57race in which that's probably to Batista's best opportunity is the reals split in votes.
- 8:03He just needs a little cohort to go after him and give him a
- 8:05chance. So top three, I think, I think that's a good bet.
- 8:09Is it gonna win it? It'd be fun. Let's let's see that
- 8:11happen. Yeah. I mean, I'm guessing you'll probably get pretty good hods
- 8:16on it. So I'm not endorsing gambling, but those that do go for
- 8:18it. The other thing I wanted to follow up on was actually a correction
- 8:24from last week. I have a correction to issue. I stated that the
- 8:30tops Chrome Taco fractors were gonna be inserts as like, um, I don't
- 8:35know the way that like a Future Stars insert or just a totally different side
- 8:39set of Tops Chrome. I was mistaken. There are actually parallels. They
- 8:45should have been in my rundown of the rainbow of all those colors. I
- 8:48know, I heard some good feedback on people really enjoying hearing all those parallels
- 8:52and the deluge just kind of washing over them. But taco fractors are in
- 8:56that they're of five. There's been a couple of them posted on eBay.
- 9:01I'll add a link to the show notes and to the description so that you
- 9:05can see them. And they look absolutely stupid. Absolutely they're just prison refractors
- 9:15with tacos like imbedded on them. Like I think I enjoy some real stupid
- 9:22stuff and cards, Like I will go on the record that there are lots
- 9:26of stupid cards that I really enjoy from, like just weird looking dudes with
- 9:30crazy mustaches, weird color combinations, weird poses. But I don't think I
- 9:35can get on board with the taco fractor, Like what a total waste.
- 9:39Like I think it'd be exciting to pull one, because it's obviously it's an
- 9:43odd five. You can sell it for some good money, but like what
- 9:46a bummer, Like what a bummer if you pulled like the Corp and Carol
- 9:50taco fractor when you could have been to the corp and Carol Red refractor of
- 9:56five that would have been a color match. Like oh, okay, so
- 10:00I don't want you to look unless you already have. There's only one that
- 10:03has sold so far on eBay. I didn't look up Massa Taka Yoshida it
- 10:09is rookie out of five because they're all out of five and by the way,
- 10:11they are hideous. I fully agree with you. How much do you
- 10:15think the the Yoshida taco fractor sold for? Okay, well, I will
- 10:20admit that before this I did see. The one that I was looking at
- 10:26was the William Contre's taco fractor, and I think it was like one hundred
- 10:28and fifty bucks. I bet the Yoshida win for eight hundred. Man,
- 10:35you need you need to take it into a job here. Eight fifty Oh
- 10:39that was you were right on. I'm impressed, Like im whoa, I
- 10:45was not expecting to be that close. Yeah I would. I would have
- 10:48probably said like three hundred. So I think the card segments years tonight,
- 10:54not mine. So you you've redeemed yourself on the taco fractors, I think
- 10:58at this point. So yeah, um, but I'm with you. Please
- 11:01go check the taco factors. So I'm I would gladly pull one. I'm
- 11:03gonna sell it immediately because because I cannot and good conscience have something like that
- 11:07in the collection. Okay, actually, now that I put eyes on this
- 11:11Yoshida one, I might take it back. The Yoshida taco factor does look
- 11:15cool. It has tacos on it. The purple in the background too,
- 11:22with like the the racing like flag. Oh man, just just wait twenty
- 11:28four tops chrome burrito vickers. I want a fall offful fractor, full fractor,
- 11:35wabble f fractor. Yeah, you just gonna you put fractor after any
- 11:39food. Yeh, it's it's gonna it's gonna sell. Yeah. This,
- 11:46yeah, this would be good to trace football of what would be the coolest
- 11:48fractor I have? So I have this thing that I love asking people of,
- 11:52like um for going to baseball games. I've realized that you can take
- 11:58a gallon on zip black bag of whatever you want into the ballpark as long
- 12:03as it's food. And so this kind of caught caught fire on White Socks
- 12:09Twitter at the beginning of the season because people were just like stuffing snack bags
- 12:13full and taking them in and I don't know if you've ever seen like the
- 12:16memes of on baseball Twitter, especially it happened in Baltimore. People would bring
- 12:22in zip black bags a spaghetti and you'd see pictures of people eating zip black
- 12:28bags of spaghetti at these baloral games. But the most unhinged thing that you
- 12:33could take to a baseball game in a zip black gallon bag. Like I
- 12:37think my favorites are warm clam chowder on like a day like it was today
- 12:43in Chicago where it's like ninety three degrees with one hundred and forty percent humanity,
- 12:48just like it's the grossest hot day, or like one of those Midwestern
- 12:54jello salad jello salads, salads that like every family gathering has them that they're
- 13:01like for some reason, literally next to the green leaf salad, and it's
- 13:07like jello, whipped cream, marshmallows, some nuts, and maybe like some
- 13:13canned fruit and extra sugar, probably too that it is a black gag.
- 13:18The first thing that came to mind was chili, a big old bag of
- 13:22chili, and even better if you brought in like a bag of hot dogs
- 13:26too, and then like you're making chili dogs like in the bringa bring a
- 13:31bag of buns, bring back of dogs, bring a bag of chili.
- 13:35Just go through the stands. Five bucks on chili dog. It feels like
- 13:39that could work a guaranteed great field if you ask me. Yeah, so
- 13:41if you've got a if you've got a good one, because I'm always looking
- 13:45for a good one. UM, you can tweet at us cards Categories while
- 13:50Twitter still exists or x or whatever it is. UM, but we do
- 13:52have an email address too, It's UH cards categories at gmail dot com,
- 13:58so you can sense to us there or on the on the comments of this
- 14:03post on rasball UM. I will also follow up. But I'd love to
- 14:07see some good suggestions for the zip box. And we stooped low already so
- 14:11that you can't. The suggestion box is wide open. Consider we just talked
- 14:16about what you can bring in a gallon size bag to a White Sox game.
- 14:20So yeah, I want to see somebody like, really, somebody's got
- 14:24to push the limit beyond the spaghetti. Spaghetti you also was a good starter.
- 14:28It's a good starter. It's it's it's quality. Uh, as long
- 14:31as you brought the sport with you to eat it. Yeah, So I
- 14:35think speaking of other odd ball things. I'm getting pretty good at this podcast.
- 14:39Segwaging, segwaying, look at me, um, other odd things.
- 14:45The triple play in Atlanta last night, I think we should talk about it
- 14:48because it was the first one of that type of triple play in one hundred
- 14:54and thirty nine years, back before al and I'll even existed. Um,
- 14:58And I think it's especially hitting a real kind of It's just a nice spot
- 15:05to hit with everybody's baseball hearts right now is we're all trying to do immaculate
- 15:09grids and try to put in like dead ball era guys that played for the
- 15:13Pirates and A's in the late eighteen hundreds into our grids like this hasn't happened
- 15:20since then, you know. Um, yep, I'll let you describe it
- 15:24because I know that, like it was really what you were excited about for
- 15:28this week. Yeah, I right there with you, And I'm I'm not
- 15:33fully got on the amculate grid yet myself, but I think I have some
- 15:35napple joy context to bring it there, so I might gut, I might
- 15:41get some old good some goodies, but oldies. But yeah, so this
- 15:43triple play, um, you know, give you give you the set up
- 15:48there. You know, we got first, I think it was first and
- 15:50second clearly nobody out. Only way you can do a triple play, you
- 15:54gonna have nobody out. And we got the fly ball going to to center
- 16:00where Michael Harris is and I'm not sure if there's a misread coming off first
- 16:06because you know, he catches it on the run and flat out run.
- 16:08He's a fast guy. Uh, he catches it straight on the run and
- 16:12he clearly sees an opportunity and he backpicks it first, which is a great
- 16:18move. Um, but he doesn't straight on the run and not doesn't plan
- 16:22it, doesn't do anything straight on the run, gets it to first,
- 16:25and uh, we see a tag from second going over and immediately after backpicking
- 16:32at first, the laser the third swipe tag. And I mean it was
- 16:37instantaneous, all every piece of that play, from the throw to the to
- 16:41the catch it first, to the throw to third and the swipe tag,
- 16:45which it's almost like they rehearsed it and and I think you had to have
- 16:49that for it to be accomplished. So um, I I was. I
- 16:53was personally, you know, longtime baseball player myself. I loved the zany
- 16:59plays the ones that like only can be created because of bone headed moves on
- 17:03the bass paths. Like you, there's nothing this could not happen without the
- 17:07stupidity of two guys on the bass path, somebody that going to a second
- 17:12they shouldn't have been, and then somebody going wait because he's back picking my
- 17:15teammate at first, I can make it in a third. None of that
- 17:18should have ever happened. You should have been first and second with one out.
- 17:22Yeah, So I don't know. I love the play. It was
- 17:26exciting to watch. To your point, we probably won't see them again for
- 17:30another hundred and thirty nine years. Yeah, I mean it's just the eight
- 17:34three five triple play. Like it's such a weird combo, Like when you
- 17:38even try to think about, you know, imagining what the numbers have put
- 17:45out are on your baseball score sheet, eight three five, it's just like
- 17:48you knew something weird happened. Yeah, I'd like to be in like the
- 17:52head of Matt Olson, who's at first for this play, is does he
- 17:56see us all in front and happening? Like, because he's the only guy
- 18:00with that view, right, he's you know, Harris is only focused on
- 18:02first, Riley's kind of watching it. I'll take place. And also this
- 18:07guy kind of like Deek the Deek the Runner coming back and be paying attention
- 18:11to the guy's breaking for thirdd Uh, he's gotta be sitting here going and
- 18:15can't can I do this? Is this gonna happen? So? Uh,
- 18:18it was? It was incredible. If you didn't see it, I know,
- 18:21I know we'll link to it, uh and and share in the in
- 18:23the notes for for the pod, but uh, crazy play. Make sure
- 18:29you see it if you haven't. Yeah, And to bring us full circle
- 18:32on the Taco Factor talk, it was you know she did that got thrown
- 18:36out a third there, so you are not kidding you've been practicing these transitions.
- 18:41I think the research department here on this podcast, which is solely underfunded,
- 18:47Uh, the deserves a promotion. I agree, and UM with that,
- 18:52I think we'll close it out for the first half here and we'll be
- 18:55back with UM, we've got some trade show strategy talk. As we know,
- 19:00The National is coming to Chicago this weekend up in Rosemont, so we
- 19:04know some people will probably be there or just be interested in what it's all
- 19:08about. So we're going to have a few strategies on how to work a
- 19:12floor at a trade show. And then for the third act, we're going
- 19:15to have discussion on more trade deadline impacts for our fantasy teams. So this
- 19:21time we're going to focus a little bit more on the negative side, looking
- 19:23at who's going to either lose playing time or lose roles. So we have
- 19:29those two pieces coming up. Stay with us. There's no I in Team,

- 20:38need indeed. All right, welcome back, everybody. We're gonna talk a
- 21:00little bit about the National Sports Collector Convention that's happening in Rosemont this weekend technically
- 21:06started today. A little bit of the details for those of you who might
- 21:11not fully be familiar with what it is, or also just remind you if
- 21:14you are a card collector and want to know what it is. It's the
- 21:17forty first of these that they happen every year, and it's the national and
- 21:23it's the biggest card conference really of the year that I'm aware of. But
- 21:27that might be a little bit my Midwestern bias coming through. There might be
- 21:32something different on the East or West coast. But it's a huge conference center
- 21:37that they fill up with cards and vendors and you have all day to be
- 21:42there. It's open Wednesday through Sunday this weekend in Rosemont, and it's a
- 21:48thirty dollars entry if you're interested to going. There's VIP tickets as well,
- 21:53which I think we're all sold out pretty quickly. Like I did look at
- 21:57some of the details not going this weekend, but I did look because it's
- 22:00just kind of in my backyard and the thirty dollars entry fees are the only
- 22:07ones left. So people with the VIP tickets getting a little early be able
- 22:11to get into some of those dollar boxes a little early, make deals a
- 22:14little earlier. But I think the big thing people are also there for is
- 22:18to do some on site grading and then there's just vendors on vendors on vendors.
- 22:22We'll see how many taco fractors are pulled live streams from Rosemont this week.
- 22:27But that's a little bit of a background on it. Like I said,
- 22:30we're not going, even though we're pretty close to it. But with
- 22:34that in mind, we thought we would still talk about some trade show strategies
- 22:38and trade show tips and tricks and things that we kind of look for as
- 22:44Jeremy and I run our own table often at a show in Schomberg and so
- 22:48yeah, Jeremy, Like, I know you're not going to the National,
- 22:51but like what would you do like once the first thing you got in the
- 22:56door? Yeah, I think I think there's for me that there's a million,
- 23:00if some things you can do there. I mean you have to have
- 23:02a strategy if you're going to the National, especially if you're just going for
- 23:04a day or two. I mean you have to figure out are you going
- 23:08there for like the National? Uh specific you know collectibles like you know Panini
- 23:15tops, all of them have like specific giveaways or you know, conference specific
- 23:18cards things like that that you can get. You know, the grading companies
- 23:22are all there, so PSA's beck get all of them are there grading on
- 23:26site. There's a crazy autograph lineup. I don't know if you if you
- 23:30looked the autograph lineup. I mean we're we're talking. We've got Andrew Jones,
- 23:33we got Mike Schmidt, Johnny Bench, Jeff Bagwell, Chipper Jones,
- 23:38Hall of Famer, Scott Roland just inducted, is going to be there selling
- 23:45signing. That'd be funny. Scott rolland just show us up with his own
- 23:48table. Yeah, I mean, just telling himself in his time. I
- 23:52guess yeah, exactly, blow it up, blow out of the water.
- 23:56We got Harold Baines, got Pedro Martinez, Ted Simmons. I mean the
- 24:00list goes on. One Marschell was there. I mean the list, the
- 24:04good list goes on. It is an incredible h lineup for autographs if you're
- 24:08into that type of thing, and then it's just you know, end to
- 24:11end cards. I think I was saw somewhere that the requirement to be able
- 24:17to even host this the National Sports Card Convention, which is the largest in
- 24:21the world. I'm maybe going a little further than I know. It's the
- 24:25largest in the US by far, and I'm just guessing that for us in
- 24:29the United States are the only crazy ones that buy so much cardboard. But
- 24:33um, you know, I think there's a requirements that you had to have
- 24:34ten thousand square feet of continuous space to even host the National and so the
- 24:41number of vendors there that are just there selling U is incredible. So for
- 24:45me, if I'm going I'm not a big grader, but that's probably one
- 24:49of the first things that I would do is get a card or two great
- 24:52that I've been holding off on because I'm just lazy and I don't want to
- 24:55send it off to PSA and wait for you know, forty five days,
- 24:57sixty days or you know, back in them pandemic days, two years to
- 25:02get something graded, and then from there I am deal hunting the whole time.
- 25:08Now for me, it's I'm not probably going for any you know,
- 25:11specific big cards. I'm I'm not a I will flip my cards here and
- 25:15there, don't get me wrong, but I'm not a high dollar collector in
- 25:19it just to flip and make the dollar. I have a PC that is
- 25:25probably too large, and uh, it's probably going to remain that way.
- 25:29So I would be hunting, packing for really good deals and things to add
- 25:32the PC the whole time. So how about you, what would your key
- 25:37target be is as you walk in the door to this massive convention. Yeah,
- 25:41I mean I think grading would be a consideration, just like you,
- 25:45because I haven't done grading, just like you said, and I think the
- 25:51chance to do it on site without the risk of sending your precious cards the
- 25:56mail is really tempting. And so to be able to show up with like
- 26:00a bulk lot, drop it off, come back a day or two later,
- 26:03have a grade, it would be really clutched, So I think that's
- 26:06something that if I do go in the future, that would be a consideration.
- 26:11And honestly, I think I'm similar to you too. I'm going to
- 26:15be out there hunting deals and looking through dollar boxes, and that's usually my
- 26:18strategy when I'm at smaller shows, is looking through the lower end cards just
- 26:25to make five dollars off of a one dollar purchase, or you know,
- 26:30buy bigger bulk lots of twenty five cent cards and fifty cent cards and get
- 26:37discounts that way. So I'm kind of a nickel and dimer like that,
- 26:41and so I'm not trying to flip the huge cards or I know, when
- 26:45we're running our table in Schomberg, it just astounds me when you've got like
- 26:49these little first graders walking up to you with like fifty thousand dollars Pat Mahomes
- 26:53cards and asking you if you have equivalent trade values to go for for baseball.
- 27:00Um, so that's not quite our Would you like my nineteen ninety five
- 27:04King Griffy Junior inserts? I mean, I yeah, he's clearly a bigger
- 27:10icon all these napkin patch inserts that I'm trying to move. If you want
- 27:15to collectively put them together or something. Um, it's not even the game
- 27:19Warren, it's the player Warren ones. Right. Yeah. Event for the
- 27:25event was the wearing of the jersey event. Yeah, didn't say who were
- 27:30it at the event? Yeah, just at some random event it was.
- 27:33It was the Taylor Swift concert. Just some random guy was wearing the Griffy
- 27:37jersey and they just cut it up. Yeah. So so I'm curious both
- 27:45of us kind of a dollar box kind of guys. We tend to spend
- 27:48some time. Where where do you tend to find the best dollar boxes?
- 27:52Like? What what's the table set up? When you're walking up to a
- 27:53table and you're you're sitting there, going I'm gonna sit I'm gonna pull up
- 27:56a chair and I'm gonna sit down here for the next thirty minutes, because
- 28:00that's the only way you can do dollar boxes, right, How are you
- 28:03assessed the table to see if if you think there's gonna be some hidden gems
- 28:07there, or if you think it's gonna be all these kind of things,
- 28:08it's just not worth your time. Yeah. I mean, I think familiarity
- 28:14with the show helps a little bit. Like if you're going into a show
- 28:17brand new that you've never been to. It's really hit or miss, and
- 28:22you're gonna have to do your best of kind of doing a lap and seeing
- 28:26what each table has and trying to, you know, take a peek into
- 28:29a few dollar boxes that are out there and seeing what you can just glance
- 28:34at Otherwise. I think one of the big things I actually focus on is
- 28:38seeing people who have a mix of like all sports, but lean a little
- 28:45heavy maybe on basketball and football and not as much baseball. But you can
- 28:51tell that they're ripping like higher end product, that they're ripping chromes, they're
- 28:55ripping inception and things that just like have nicer patches, nicer cards, nicer
- 29:02parallels. Because usually I find luck in those people either not quite being fully
- 29:07up to date on especially because I'm focusing on modern stuff a little bit more
- 29:11like hot rookies and prospects, and just some of the rarer parallels too,
- 29:17Like I know, doing that, I find lots of like top scrobe negative
- 29:22refractors that like they don't seem terribly rare, but they really are. I
- 29:27think their case hits technically and they're really tough to pull and they dry up
- 29:33pretty fast and so you can find good stuff doing that. Otherwise, like
- 29:40you're just trying to kind of see who's got stuff that's in your wheelhouse,
- 29:44Like is advantage, is it's new stuff, is it autographs? Is it
- 29:48sick patches? Like finding people who rip similar product and sorting through their dollar
- 29:52boxes? What about you? Yeah, I think you know you're onto something
- 29:57there with the guys that are ripping high end, but maybe just off of
- 30:02what you're after if you're looking for really good deals. I think what I
- 30:06where I've found a lot of luck in the past are the guys that don't
- 30:08have really a terribly big booth. They have, you know, a little
- 30:12case there with some decent, nice cards. Not we're not talking you know,
- 30:15a thousand and five thousand dollars cards. We're talking you know, some
- 30:18nice twenty thirty fifty one hundred dollars cards, just a handful of them,
- 30:22and then they have a small dollar box or two. We're you're clearly just
- 30:25trying to get rid of the excess. And that that seems to be where
- 30:27I've had some really really good luck with the with with the dollar boxes is
- 30:33finding you know, some good deals on the on the high end stuff and
- 30:37but really it's you know, they're they're there to sell their few big cards,
- 30:42and that's that's what they're there for. And then everything else is just
- 30:45like if it goes great, I don't really care. Um and it's I've
- 30:51had a ton of success. I uh most recent show, I was at
- 30:53um I, and you know, I buy a lot of Cardinals, not
- 30:56a surprise, being a big Saint Louis fan. UM. I went up
- 31:00to a table and the guy couldn't have had more than you know, ten
- 31:03cards in his case, maybe two boxes in front of him. And first
- 31:07thing I see is he's got a very nice Jack Flaherty uh to ten auto
- 31:14in his case for ten ten bucks. I'm like, I'm a Jack Clarity
- 31:18fan. I can't help it. He's not gonna be on the Cardinals after
- 31:19the next week. But I had to pick it up, and I'm like,
- 31:22well, I'm well, I'm here. I'm just gonna look through the
- 31:23dollar box. And one of the first things I see in the dollar box
- 31:29is a tink Hints uh skyfoil blue first about Bowman card for fifty cents.
- 31:37That Bowman tink Hins was worth more than the Flaherty and he's just like I
- 31:42don't, I don't just throws it in with it, and so you know
- 31:45it's it. You have to kind of know what the motivation is the seller
- 31:49if you're looking for some of those those cards and those deals. So uh,
- 31:53to your point, if you know the know the show, you got
- 31:57a good shot. Um. But I think rules thing you're going if you
- 32:01find those guys that are just looking to move things, you're los gonna be
- 32:05deals. Yeah, I agree, And like I think that's the biggest thing
- 32:09at the National Chief You're going to keep that in mind, is that it's
- 32:13just going to be so much volume that like there's also going to be I
- 32:17think if I were going, like, there's gonna be tables that just probably
- 32:22don't have as much action, and especially if you're getting there on one those
- 32:24later days like Saturday or in Sunday, And like I think to my experience,
- 32:30like running my table, when it gets kind of towards the end of
- 32:32the show, you do start getting a little slap happy with deals in terms
- 32:37of wanting to turn stuff around. It just kind of make some money,
- 32:40especially because I know those tables that the National are not cheap. I've talked
- 32:45to some people who are at our Schomberg Show that are getting tables there and
- 32:50they had to be like prepping and making sure they had all the right cards
- 32:53and all the gratings back that they wanted to put out, because it's a
- 32:59lot riskier endeavor when you're putting that much into a table. So if you're
- 33:01getting there on one of those last days, like that's also the time to
- 33:07go through people's stuff and just see what sorts of deals who can cut,
- 33:10because I would bet that most stuff would probably you know, fifty to maybe
- 33:17even more percent off, like fifty sixty percent off possibly, and like people
- 33:22are trying to just make sure that they break some sort of profit margin off
- 33:27at the table. Yeah. I think at that point, you're trying to
- 33:30make a good stack and you know, ask for a good price because they're
- 33:34going to give it to you. I mean almost everything at the card shows
- 33:37are negotiable. I mean even the fifty cent cards are negotiable. You asked
- 33:42me if you can have fifty cent card for sure? Like it's it's all,
- 33:45it's all negotiable, you know. The one thing that I do I
- 33:49think we need to talk about is what you avoid at the card shows what
- 33:52kind of things you have avoid, especially with the National happening starting today.
- 33:58There's another small card events happening today as well, the release of Tops Chrome,
- 34:04and so I think the worst thing you can possibly buy at the National
- 34:08would be anything twenty twenty three Tops Chrome because those prices are gonna be insane.
- 34:16They are never gonna be higher than they are right now. It doesn't
- 34:19matter who the guy is. Unless you have the next Mike Trout, that
- 34:22card will never be more expensive than it is today. So I just word
- 34:29of word of warning, because I've been there before, I've made the mistake
- 34:31before. I'm like, I've got to have this card and just like wait
- 34:35like ten days, and those things are gonna come down significantly. I saw
- 34:40a break earlier today that went it was like a twenty five box break or
- 34:45case break. Jordan Walker went for thirty five hundred dollars in that break,
- 34:52yes, And I was sitting there going, well, maybe I'll pick up
- 34:55a Jordan Walker or something like that. And once I got past like three
- 35:00hundred dollars, I'm like, Okay, well maybe I'll wait. So the
- 35:04prices will they will be coming down if you're gonna get a if you're need
- 35:07a box to rip, that's perfectly fine. I don't think there's anything wrong
- 35:10with that. Just make sure within a range. I think, you know,
- 35:14three hundred and fifty something like that. Maybe three seventy five is pretty
- 35:16fair for like a Chrome Jumbo. But unless you're getting you know, singles
- 35:22of like base guards in the dollar boxes. I would not buy a single
- 35:28insert autograph anything like that unless it's like a one of one that you'll never
- 35:34see again, and even that probably probably come back a little bit later in
- 35:37the day. Yeah, at least get their contact info exactly so when they
- 35:43don't move it. For ten thousand dollars for a Yoshida taco fractor, you
- 35:47have a chance to come back for it later. Oh man, ten times
- 35:51the price. I mean, one's off the market. So hey, it's
- 35:55only it's only going up from here. It's only four left. Yeah,
- 36:00I mean, you're luk, who's laughing? Now? What happens when that
- 36:02dude hits that Jordan Walker taco factor? I know about things, but you
- 36:10better hope you hit the Walker taco fractor. Yeah. I mean, hey,
- 36:15we're talking to twenty five case break, so there's like five hundred and
- 36:20forty autos in this break, but still I think you're averaging maybe two or
- 36:24three autos a player at that point. And I don't see, I mean,
- 36:29unless you're hitting a low numbered auto or really low number parallel, see
- 36:32how how you're breaking anywhere near even on something like that. And if you're
- 36:37buying at a break for that guy, you're probably also not flipping them.
- 36:39So you invested h and as if you're doing for fun, you have those
- 36:45funds perfectly fine. But I probably went a little bit. Yeah, I
- 36:49mean, especially you would have to think that. I mean, Walker has
- 36:52signed so much already, Like all you did during COVID was sit there and
- 36:55signed cards, you know, So like, I mean, it'll be interesting
- 37:00to kind of see where the future of all these new releases go with all
- 37:05these autos, because it's not quite like the way it was when autos first
- 37:08started coming out back in our day, where they were pretty short run still
- 37:13and yeah, it was actually hard to get something like auto actually meant something.
- 37:15Now it's just like, man, I need another Jordan Yamamoto auto.
- 37:21Here's worse my two dollars to pick up that thing up. So oh yeah,
- 37:25I was gonna stay on top of that too, like the with the
- 37:29autos, Like think about like how many of them were just like lost to
- 37:34time, because like I think back in the day, card collecting was a
- 37:37little bit more of like just yeah, more children. I think we're into
- 37:43it. Maybe it's just viewing it through my own lens a little selfishly,
- 37:46but like there were so many that were probably just banged up and didn't quite
- 37:51make it through. But like I feel like there's lots of people nowadays that
- 37:55are treating card collecting is like such a serious business and like really dedicated to
- 38:01it that the condition of them is probably nicer. But that also like makes
- 38:07every single one of them less rare, So it'll be kind of strange to
- 38:13I mean, hopefully we do this pod for twenty twenty five years and we
- 38:15can mark going back to episode three and uh seeing how this all turns out,
- 38:22you know. Yeah, I mean I know back from from cards I
- 38:24have back in the day, Like I have a I think it's a Bob
- 38:29Gibson in the collection that I've I've held onto because it's got a mustache drawn
- 38:34on it and from some kid that have at it and before I picked it
- 38:36up, And so I've had to hold onto that thing just because it's got
- 38:38the Bob Gibson mustache. And who doesn't want a card with Bob Gibson with
- 38:43a drawn on mustache from a five yield um. So those less as nostalgia
- 38:47at this point, yeah, one of one. The only the other thing
- 38:52I wanted to ask you is your opinion. So to your point, you
- 38:55and I've have run tables before, and we've we've been you knows before both
- 39:01sides of the house. If you're if you're going just solely as a buyer,
- 39:07should you bring things to trade and sell? What's what's your approach with
- 39:10that? What's your philosophy? I always bring a little bit just because especially
- 39:16there's always like a little bit of stuff that I'm trying to trade and people
- 39:22I think would be interested. Usually like when I'm doing that on a floor,
- 39:25it's stuff I know will interest people and you can use it almost like
- 39:30as cash, and so like Otani rookies, a Kuni rookies, Sodo rookies,
- 39:37like stuff that people know the value of pretty quick and you can move
- 39:43for five, ten, twenty fifty dollars, you know, where you can
- 39:46almost like denominate them like their dollar bills or like equivalents of like those dollar
- 39:52bills. So I will take a few of those, but usually not a
- 39:55lot, just because I'm usually in more of an acquisition mode. And it's
- 40:01also like it's just tough, like lots of those people that are running tables
- 40:07are only buying very specific things for their PC or very high end things or
- 40:13things that just like you just it's a total roll of the dice. So
- 40:17like, unless you know somebody who's looking for something that you've met at a
- 40:22previous show, I usually don't take too much just because it's also like it's
- 40:27gonna weigh you down. And I mean people who go to shows are all
- 40:31real nice, but like you've got to think a little bit of like the
- 40:34factor of like what you have on you and like what could sneak out of
- 40:38your backpack pretty easily. So I don't take too much. Yeah, I
- 40:43think you're You're right on. For me, it seems like the best is
- 40:46I mean whatever you can hold in like your hand that was maybe like those
- 40:51two dozen cards something like that, you know, top loaded, and you're
- 40:54talking cards that are in at ten to fifteen to fifty dollar range, like
- 40:58to your point, something that is worth enough if somebody's interested in but not
- 41:00so much that they feel like they're taking a big risk. And I think
- 41:04that's enough that you can go to tables say hey, you're looking at some
- 41:06things, and as you're looking, just like there's enough stuff to you to
- 41:07buy, just say hey, are you trading or buying yourself? And if
- 41:14they say yes, handing the stack that just fits in their hands they can
- 41:16easily look at while you keep looking like. You gotta make it so easy
- 41:21for somebody to do, and but you gotta make it also worth their while.
- 41:23They might go through and they're like, oh, there's one card in
- 41:25here that they really like or really fits their collection or something like that,
- 41:29and they're like, hey, you know forty dollars card here, I really
- 41:32like this one. Make sure you find forty dollars fifty dollars sticker price or
- 41:37something like that right just giving to you, and then just say, hey,
- 41:38he's even trade. Well, at the end of the day, I
- 41:42wasn't holding on to that card and I was gonna buy fifty dollars with your
- 41:45cards. And so it's a it's a clean sweep to your point. It's
- 41:47basically like it's cash so I think you do want to bring some you know,
- 41:52but don't don't overdo it. Don't bring I saw a guy the other
- 41:55day they had like an almost a monster box with them just walking around and
- 41:59like, it doesn't it's a little too much. Nobody's gonna take the time
- 42:01to look through that. So, yeah, that's a little intense. All
- 42:05right. Well, I think that's that's that's it for me for you know,
- 42:07uh, not making us the national myself this weekend, but hopefully in
- 42:10a show here in the next month or so, and deploy some of the
- 42:15strategies. Uh, there's there's no no uh no right strategy. There's just
- 42:20making sure you know what you want and what you're going after. Uh,
- 42:22and make sure you don't take too much because there's always something to buy for
- 42:25for everybody. And if it's a card that you you don't want to sell,
- 42:29don't take it because everybody will want to buy that card and it's gonna
- 42:34be hard to say no. So if make sure you leave your your key
- 42:37rookies behind or your you know, your family heirlooms, don't be bringing those
- 42:42outs. Yeah, I agree, it's never gonna work in that kind of
- 42:45moment um. Okay, Yeah, I mean I know that you just went
- 42:50over Tops Crumb coming out came out literally today as we're talking, on July
- 42:54twenty six. Any other releases coming up that we should notify people about.
- 42:59Yeah, we've got just about a week from from today, We've got twenty
- 43:02twenty three. Uh, Tops Alan and Ginter coming out. Alan Gunter is
- 43:07always an interesting set. Um. You know, the standard set always a
- 43:12kind of a clean looking set, but always has the very interesting non sports
- 43:19um inserts um. You know there was what the really popular crypto card a
- 43:23number of years ago. There's just really interesting ones. Um. I personally
- 43:30know my son actually really enjoys that set because he'll collect all the random buildings
- 43:34and things like that, because he's just like, oh, this is interesting.
- 43:37Um. And you know, you get random cards like animals and things.
- 43:40So I've never been one into those, but I think there's a lot
- 43:43of people that actually thought find that just entertaining. U. But that thinks
- 43:46it's a pretty pretty reasonably priced set and just it's interesting. It's not it's
- 43:52not your high end, it's not anything that's gonna you know, break you're
- 43:54gonna write home about. Well, I think it's always a fun set.
- 43:59So I mean, what are your thoughts on Alan Ginter? Yeah, I
- 44:01agree. I think I always pick up a blaster or two of it a
- 44:05year just because it is, like it's a goofy rip and like it's fun
- 44:08to like see all the weird inserts, and I like the little minis and
- 44:14so yeah, it's always interesting. But yeah, I think that's good to
- 44:17put on people's radars. We'll have to maybe we can think about for next
- 44:22week putting together like a little Alan and Ginter overview the way we did tops
- 44:24Chrome. I'm sure there's not quite as many parallels, but we can find
- 44:29some goofy cards and really kind of dive into a few things for people.
- 44:32Oh yeah, I'm sure there'll be some fun stuff to talk about Alan Ginter.
- 44:36So yeah, I think that's a good thing to throw on the docket.
- 44:37Nice, awesome. Well, okay, we will wrap up the baseball
- 44:42card segment here and we'll roll into the fantasy baseball coming up after this break
- 44:45stick with us, and we'll talk about some other trade deadline impacts that might
- 44:51have a negative value. All right, Welcome back everybody to the third act
- 45:14here of Cards and Categories, where we get into the fantasy baseball and so
- 45:17last week we talked about players who might have boosts in their fantasy value going
- 45:22forward from the trade deadline, either being thrust into bigger roles as young players
- 45:30or maybe even finding new roles. So let's look at the other side of
- 45:32the coin this week. Brew. I know that like the trade deadline is
- 45:37filling up all the talks we covered early in the first act, that Otani's
- 45:43not on the block anymore, but still plenty of other dudes are, and
- 45:45we'll see when they start moving. The deadline is still August first. They
- 45:50haven't moved it since we talked last week, and so yeah, I think
- 45:55with Otani being pulled off the market, we might start seeing some more actually
- 46:00this weekend, and so we'll see if some of these guys might get moved.
- 46:04But let's try to think of some guys who we should get out of
- 46:07the way now, try to either drop or move on the trade block before
- 46:13their value dips. I think i'll lead off here, so I was the
- 46:17one that kind of generate the topic, so I'll go with the first guy.
- 46:22The first one that I was really looking at is Jack Flaherty from the
- 46:24Cardinals. As our streak of talking about Cardinals players keeps going strong, mostly
- 46:30because I'm worried that whatever team picks him up is just going to throw him
- 46:36into a bullpen relief option. That obviously, he hasn't been the steadiest starter
- 46:40this year for you if you drafted him as over his hundred in four innings
- 46:45so far this year, he's got an eight seven K nine with an ugly
- 46:50four four walk per nine, and that has led him to a four thirty
- 46:53nine e ARRA overall seven wins with the futured Cardinals team. And so I
- 47:00think somebody's going to be looking at this profile and say, you know what,
- 47:05Jack's already walking too many guys. Let's try to move him into a
- 47:07bullpen where you can contain that a little bit. Maybe let that fastball play
- 47:12up a little bit, add a couple of ticks to it, lean into
- 47:15the slider a little bit more. He's throwing the slider twenty five percent of
- 47:19the time, which is actually a little bit down. The biggest uptick in
- 47:22usage that he has this year from his traditional mix of pitches has been the
- 47:29curveball bumping up a little bit. I think there's if you go to his
- 47:31Fangrafs page, it says he's got a new cutter this year, but I
- 47:35think it's probably blended into his old four seam rate and he's throwing his chain
- 47:39up a lot more. So. I think they can find a way to
- 47:43get away from his fastball that has been trending down philosophy wise. You know,
- 47:47came into the league sitting ninety four ish. It's down to the mid
- 47:52ninety two level right now. So Jack Flaherty, I think there is going
- 47:55to be a team as he's a free agent, goes out to the Ardinals
- 48:00and says, hey, give him to me. Here's a rookie, ye
- 48:04prospected pitcher, and I'm gonna throw Jack into the bullpen. Yeah. I
- 48:09don't think you're You're wrong. I think with a lot of starters are gonna
- 48:15fall in this this camp, and now that Otani talks died down, I
- 48:19think the starter market's gonna start to pick up. It is probably the first
- 48:21thing that is we're really gonna get hot. Um, well, even before
- 48:23the reliever market. If he asked me, But um, I think that
- 48:28Flaherty he's got so much upside that somebody's gonna take him on. But there,
- 48:32But he is one of those guys I don't know how he would handle
- 48:37mentally, Hey, roll out of the bullpen. He is a sink or
- 48:39swim like I could. I could go either way with a guy like that.
- 48:44Um yeah, but I think he could be lightning out of the bullpen.
- 48:47And if so, I think a team has taken him on not looking
- 48:51to resign a potential for next year, is going to run the arm out
- 48:54and they're gonna do whatever they need to with them. So I think you're
- 48:57right, there's uh, there's quite a bit opportunity to do there for for
- 49:00downside. Unfortunately, Yeah, who is the first guy they die? You
- 49:06kind of had that you thought might lose some value in some retrade or rethinking
- 49:13of how we're going to value him going forward. Yeah, so I'm gonna
- 49:15have to, you know, well all our starter talk here go with Michael
- 49:19Lorenzen from the Detroit Tigers. M Lorenzen's is he's an interesting one. He's
- 49:23actually about fifty percent now in YAHOO League's just looking at you know, a
- 49:28quick roster check, and you know he's actually having a really good year.
- 49:34What worries to me about Lorenzen is U two things one. He has already
- 49:38thrown the second most endings of his career this year, and he has improved.
- 49:45It looks like he's traded out his cutter curveball for a lot more sliders
- 49:50things like that. But he also has the best walker his career by far,
- 49:53And so I don't know that it's all that's sustainable. I'm sure the
- 49:58pressure in Detroit's not that not that much. And I think any team trading
- 50:02for him is looking for him to fill the very back of the rotation,
- 50:07and that's it's probably somebody that's got an injury that they're waiting for somebody to
- 50:13come back like he he looks like the kind of guy you bring him for
- 50:15an insurance, but not that you're gonna rely on just because there's enough red
- 50:20flags that he's gonna fill innings and he's has his good ARRA. But you
- 50:24know, if you actually look under the covers, his you know, his
- 50:28uh x FIP is you know four point three, even though his his era
- 50:35is you know a little bit three and a half. Um. His his
- 50:39x CRA if you you you go with x CRA is the worst. It's
- 50:43spending five years, Like I think, what's gonna happen is he's gonna get
- 50:45traded and there's gonna be hype like because he's, you know, people been
- 50:49picking up because he's actually had some solid starts and they're gonna trade. He's
- 50:52like, oh, you know, they're gonna throw the Yankees out. The
- 50:54Yankees traded for lorenz And and so he's gonna all this hype around him.
- 50:59Think I think his value is going to go way past the actual you know
- 51:05ability. And it's not like he's striking out a lot of guys or anything
- 51:08like that. He doesn't even strike out seven or nine, so there's not
- 51:10like a lot of extra value there for him. And so I think Lorenzen
- 51:15is going to be one of those guys that if you picked him up for
- 51:19a hot streak or something like that, or somebody else's it gets really excited.
- 51:22When he does get traded, his value might go up for like one
- 51:25start, and then when he bombs that first start or they announced that he's
- 51:31the fifth starter until somebody's coming back from the eye l right, then I
- 51:36think his value is gonna go right back down. So Lorenzos one got a
- 51:39lot of red flags for me. Nothing against the guy, but if we're
- 51:43talking to a players. I had to pick one, Sauce. I couldn't
- 51:45take a hot Timey since he's off the market, So we're gonna go with
- 51:49Michael Lorenzon. Yeah, and I think that's a good one. His groundball
- 51:53rate is also at a career low since his rookie year at forty two point
- 51:59six. Right now, that's bad news, Sparris once you take that out
- 52:01of Detroit. Um, he's kind of really great home park and plays about
- 52:06a really terrible Central Division lineup. So you gotta be funny thing. It's
- 52:10funny when he's wished everything out for a slider and set his ground ball rate
- 52:15has has dropped. Yeah, meth not adding up something here. So unless
- 52:20he's getting traded to you know, some huge ballpark like Oakland, I mean,
- 52:23why would Oakland take him? Right the all the all the ballparks that
- 52:28are really great for for pictures, there's not a lot of buyers there.
- 52:31Yeah, what's what's the next guy you got us? Keeping with the pictures
- 52:37here? Um, I think the next one I've got is Alec Manoah.
- 52:40So I don't think he's gonna get traded, but I think he's gonna lose
- 52:45his spot in the rotation again. I mean, the value has been pretty
- 52:50bottomed down on him anyway, obviously going back down to the Complex and having
- 52:55to rework all of his pitches, and there was a start that he got
- 53:00blown up by the Complex League team that he was facing off against. And
- 53:05it's been a disastrous season for alec Manoa, and it's possible that some people
- 53:10bought back in after that. Speaking of the Tigers, he had that really
- 53:15brilliant start against the Tigers coming off of the fourth July weekend when he went
- 53:21six sitting strong, had eight k's and knowing gave up one earned run for
- 53:23the win. But since then, after the All Star break, he's had
- 53:28two duds already again in his eight and third innings against Seattle and against San
- 53:32Diego, he has nine walks, including in the outing against San Diego he
- 53:38had no strikeouts, five walks, and so things are looking bad again.
- 53:44I think he's going to lose a spot. I think he's going to be
- 53:45sent back down to the miners. If there's anybody in your league that still
- 53:50has that memory of that Detroit Tigers outing that he had, you've got to
- 53:55try to move him now. Otherwise I'm just you've got a straight cut him,
- 54:00Like I don't think he's gonna be worth anything because he's either gonna probably
- 54:04be moved into the bullpen if the Blue Jays make a move, or sent
- 54:07back down to the miners, and even I would think in dynasties right now,
- 54:10like I think I would just cut him, like I don't, Like
- 54:15it's really terrible, and you probably spent up on him real big because where
- 54:21his value was earlier in the season, like he was the top twenty twenty
- 54:25five pitcher and being drafted like it. And so if he's tanked to where
- 54:30he's at now, like you've got to consider maybe just totally cutting bait and
- 54:35dynasty and like throwing him back into the scrap heap and maybe picking up somebody
- 54:39who's starting to shoot through the miners. Yeah, I think for him and
- 54:45the problem with him, as you know, for some guys that have really
- 54:49great stuff that just strike out twelve guys per Nie or things like that,
- 54:52like at least they can carry you somewhere else, like even when they're here
- 54:55a whip or falling apart, or maybe they don't do a tory of strikeouts,
- 55:00but they rarely walk anybody, so they maintain your whip even if they
- 55:04kill your ear a something like that. He's not doing any of that,
- 55:07right, He's across the board. Is not helpful. So I'm right there
- 55:10with you. I think, Um, he's eat almost either way, he's
- 55:15probably getting sent back, sent back down, and there's just not any value
- 55:19to be had there. The only only spot you have him is in a
- 55:21dynasty league. If you got him for like bare bones at the back of
- 55:23the draft or dollar player to pay what your format is. That's the only
- 55:27way you're holding on to Alcmanu at this point. Yeah, I agree,
- 55:30You've got one more picture to round us out for these starters. Yeah,
- 55:34one more picture, and I'm going back to the well in Detroit because clearly
- 55:37they need to trade everybody. Um, EDWARDO. Rodriguez. Um, And
- 55:42I think this is a you know, some people might be like, really,
- 55:45Rodriguez, what, what's what's the problem there? Well, you know,
- 55:49EDWARDO. Rodriguez, he's just he's running an eara under three already this
- 55:53year. Um. And so he's he's been solid. He's over nine case
- 56:00per nine. He's barely walking more than two guys per nine. So everything
- 56:05looks great right on the surface, but you know, word of Rodriguez is
- 56:09a streaky, streaky pitcher. He had a series of starts earlier this season
- 56:15where he had I think within six starts he gave up two runs in the
- 56:20total, and then since that time frame, UM, I think the like
- 56:24since mid day, his ears is almost five. Like he's so hot and
- 56:30cold, and I think when he if he gets moved, I think you're
- 56:34just running the risk that he's going to go really really cold, because he
- 56:38seems to be one of those guys that he just runs with whatever's happening,
- 56:42the hype or whatnot. And I think he's the guy that the kind of
- 56:45guy that the pressure gets to. You know, he always seemed to struggle
- 56:47on the big stage in Boston at like the most critical points, he struggles.
- 56:52So there's not like a whole lot of deep analysis here on you know,
- 56:55his uh, his slider usage or anything like that. I just think
- 56:59that he's it's just dreaky guy that's some that he's gonna get picked up and
- 57:02he's just not gonna be able to handle the heat of the Pennant race wherever
- 57:06he goes. Um, I think there is the volatility that scares me.
- 57:10And I think, right now, because his numbers look so good even though
- 57:14he's not been good for the last month and a half, almost two months,
- 57:16that somebody, somebody's gonna give you something good for him. And you
- 57:21can probably teut that he's gonna go to a Pennant race and he's gonna get
- 57:23more wins, you know, something like that. I think you have some
- 57:27selling value there. I'm running. I'm run for the hills with EDWARDO.
- 57:31Rodriguez. Yeah. No, I think I agree across the board. And
- 57:37it's again like the situation, it's going to be really tough for him to
- 57:40upgrade from his home park and find somewhere that's a softer landing spot. So
- 57:46I think if let's switch over to batters. Now, let's think of some
- 57:51batteries that we can go through. And I think I've got one right away
- 57:53that just kind of like Edward overviews. I'm not going to get into really
- 57:58like his stats and his bad ball data and stuff, because it's pretty straightforward.
- 58:02C J. Kron. If he gets moved out of the Colorado Rockies,
- 58:06I think wherever he ends up one, he's probably not gonna have a
- 58:10starting full time role like he might end up in a short sight patoon.
- 58:14But two, he's not playing in Colorado, so it's never gonna be an
- 58:21upgrade, so you might as well try to move him now that if somebody's
- 58:24maybe not thinking about that or doesn't really kind of put two and two together.
- 58:30CJ. Cron is a free agron after this year, so they should
- 58:34be moving him. And I mean, I know I rag on this every
- 58:37week in in the waiver Wires, and so does c A and all of
- 58:43his blurb stomp articles. But you never know what the Rockies are going to
- 58:46do, and it's possible they don't trade him. But I have a feeling
- 58:52with their trade of Pierre Johnson that happened like they might actually move some of
- 58:55these pieces, unlike last year when they just sat on Daniel Bard and let
- 58:59him beyond the roster. I think with the you know, the bashing of
- 59:02the Rockies in the way that they handle all things personnel, I think the
- 59:07true true telling sign here is do they have the up and coming first basement
- 59:13um that they want to block? And I don't think they do, so
- 59:15he's gone. H The only reason they keep him is because they want to
- 59:17block the up and coming first basement for the next three years. I think
- 59:20that's how it. Ryan McMahon and Brnnan Rodgers and basically any other h player
- 59:23that has been up and coming through that system has just been put through the
- 59:27ringer for for the years to come up. So I don't see anybody in
- 59:30the way or to block. I guess that's the opposite. So, yeah,
- 59:35CJ. Crown's gone, and you're right, there's no deep analysis needed.
- 59:37He's leaving Colorado some story story, story clothes. Yeah, how about
- 59:44you. What's what's about that you're thinking of? Yeah, I'm gonna go
- 59:47out on a limb here. Um. Even more than Edward Rodriguez, a
- 59:51guy with good numbers is Jonathan India for the Cincinnati Reds. You know,
- 59:55I think the problem with India right now is they've got so many young guys
- 1:00:00coming up that are taking playing time, and they are a team that probably
- 1:00:04could use a little bit of pitching. Um, he's gonna get more expensive
- 1:00:07before other guys out there, So I would not be surprised to see the
- 1:00:10Reds move Jonathan India. I'm sure Reds fans do not like to hear that.
- 1:00:14And I mean he's he's I'm not gonna say, got a colts falling
- 1:00:17there, but he is a very popular player there in Cincinnati, but he
- 1:00:22just might not have a spot long term. Um with with all the young
- 1:00:24guys coming up and all the talent there, Spencer Steers really taking taking a
- 1:00:30good spot in starting lineup. You've got Ellie, got cs, You've got
- 1:00:34McClaine, You've got all these guys that are really contributing, they just don't
- 1:00:38really need them. And the problem with that is if if Jonathan India is
- 1:00:43getting sold like he's a volume staffs guy, He's not unbelievable at any one
- 1:00:50thing. He just scores a lot of runs. He's got a lot of
- 1:00:52RBIs, he's got a few homers, he's got a few steals, he's
- 1:00:54got an okay average, Like a lot of his value comes from hitting the
- 1:00:59fact that he's hit the top of the lineup and he's getting a lot of
- 1:01:00volume. So wherever he goes, he's not going to a contender. If
- 1:01:06the Reds are selling him. If they're if they're using him to get a
- 1:01:08nice piece, he's likely going to somewhere, you know, a bottom ten
- 1:01:13offense from a top ten offense, and so I think that's just going to
- 1:01:15naturally hurt his his overall production. Nothing against the guy. I think he's
- 1:01:20actually a really great ball player. I think he's very solid, and in
- 1:01:23the situation he's in right now, it's he's probably a buy, right if
- 1:01:28he still stays on the Reds. I think the problem is, I don't.
- 1:01:30I think there's a good chance that he moves and that value really really
- 1:01:34goes down for a you know, rebuilding team. I'm not I don't know
- 1:01:37what team that is, but you know, he goes to Kansas City Royals
- 1:01:42for and that value is just not going to be what it what it was
- 1:01:46in that little bandbox in Cincinnati, Yeah, or Detroit for some of those
- 1:01:51Detroit pictures. So yeah, we're I'm calling him now Eduardo Rodriguez for Jonathan
- 1:01:55India and I'm dropping both of them. Yeah, And I mean, I
- 1:02:00think the other thing with India two is, I mean, Here's Parks don't
- 1:02:06come much better than Cincinnati really all in cours. And with that, like
- 1:02:08with Rockies players like you run into the Cours effect that at least with Reds
- 1:02:14players like you get all that Cincinnati production and there isn't quite as bad of
- 1:02:17like a road drop off. But I think that really kind of also hints
- 1:02:22at the theme of another hitter that I've got that also would be leaving a
- 1:02:29pretty cushy home ballpark, and that's Adam Duval. M Duval has been on
- 1:02:34the block as of late as the Red Sox have moved out Keik Hernandez,
- 1:02:37and I think the Red Sox are going to try to do a weird kind
- 1:02:42of threading the needle thing that Aj Preller has done in the past, where
- 1:02:45they move some of the extraneous pieces and try to find a little bit pitching
- 1:02:51and see if they can patch it all together when Chris Sale comes back and
- 1:02:54make a run at the wild card spot because they're a pretty solid team.
- 1:02:59Obviously they'd win both Central divisions, and so I think again, not not
- 1:03:04too much like real deep analysis on Adam Duval's stats and like what he's doing.
- 1:03:09I mean, he's got a one twenty one w RC plus on a
- 1:03:13year and that's even with the broken wrist in the middle of the year.
- 1:03:15So he's been pretty solid and has been hitting for power. But if when
- 1:03:21he leaves Boston, Boston is I looked at this, I think it was
- 1:03:27like last month, and one of my Wayer wire pieces is that right now
- 1:03:30through twenty twenty three, Finnway Park is like the number two hitter park behind
- 1:03:35Cooers right now by park factors. I think part of it, honestly is
- 1:03:38that as kind of global warming kicks in and Boston gets warmer and warmer,
- 1:03:44like that combined with the rabbit ball like just makes the alleys play like perfectly
- 1:03:51where you can drive it into those alleys deep and also pop easy home rounds
- 1:03:55over the Monster and over the around the pesky pole and stuff. So leaving
- 1:04:00Boston is a huge, huge hit to Duvall's values because he can't popping stuff
- 1:04:05over the Green Monster anymore. So, UM, if you have Adam Duvall
- 1:04:10and you've been actually, I mean, I was so like hell bent on
- 1:04:15knocking to just just statistics. I haven't even like looked up his like recent
- 1:04:18splits or anything. But let's see how he's been doing in the month of
- 1:04:21July since he's kind of been back from that injury, and he's down to
- 1:04:25an eighty four w RC plus since he returned. Um, if there's still
- 1:04:29anybody that is looking at the overall stat line year league. Um, you
- 1:04:33might be able to move Duvall and get out from unerneath him, or you
- 1:04:38might want to be starting to think about a contingency plan for your outfield.
- 1:04:43Yeah, I think you're you're right on there and I'm gonna I'm gona hit
- 1:04:45you my last guy, which I think to your point is, uh,
- 1:04:48we're we're playings off well, very very similar to Adam Duval. Looking across
- 1:04:54the board, I think you said d Vaal had one twenty one w RC
- 1:04:56plus my guy's got a one twenty nine older than Adam Duval. M Duvall
- 1:05:03on. Yeah, who's roster to twenty one percent? My guy sixteen percent.
- 1:05:06We're talking Tommy Fam of the New York METS. Um. I think
- 1:05:11the comparisons in there, uh, they're not by similar hitters by any means.
- 1:05:15Uh. You know, FAM's got the speed, uh power combo.
- 1:05:19Duval's got the power, power strikeout combo. Um. But I think that
- 1:05:25Fam is in a kind of a similar spot where he's got he's got a
- 1:05:29role right now, but he's this contracts up after the year. Um,
- 1:05:33he's thirty five years old. He's not a future building piece. And so
- 1:05:38he is that perfect fourth outfielder for a contending team. Um, because he
- 1:05:44can plug, he can he can spare guys. He's gonna be great off
- 1:05:46the bench if he needs some penship, finish, running speed, penship power,
- 1:05:50somebody to come in there like he's got. He's a great acquisition for
- 1:05:55a team that's contending. Really just looking to round out the roster and really
- 1:05:59go deep in the playoffs. That hurts his fantasy value a ton. And
- 1:06:04he has, you know, had a little helium as of late, just
- 1:06:06because he I mean I think he's already is he close to ten ten on
- 1:06:12the season. Yeah, he's got nine home runs, eleven steals, and
- 1:06:15so anytime it's like, oh, if you project that out, we're roughly
- 1:06:19halfway through season, I know where more like sixty sixty five percent through,
- 1:06:21But he could be on a twenty twenty pace, like you can easily misread
- 1:06:27how where he's going and on the big stage in New York. So,
- 1:06:30um, I think Tommy fan again, this isn't deep analysis. I think,
- 1:06:33uh, this, this, this whole section has not been deep analysis.
- 1:06:35It's just I think fam gets moved and I think he's looking in the
- 1:06:39fourth outfield role. And if anybody's willing to give you a you know,
- 1:06:44a quarter or on the dollar value, take it m and and move on.
- 1:06:48You'll find a replacement pretty easily. Yeah, definitely. And so I
- 1:06:53mean we haven't hit relievers yet. Relievers are going to be the biggest thing
- 1:06:57that move at this deadline. Um. Obviously, as we talked earlier,
- 1:07:00Offen Bizzario moved today, Jorge Lopez and Dylan Floral were swapped today, Chris
- 1:07:04Johnson moved yesterday, And there's just going to be I mean usually there's like
- 1:07:10a couple of trades every year of relievers that I look back on MLB trade
- 1:07:15rumors and I'm like, I didn't even like see that one come across my
- 1:07:18my like radar. So we've got a list we'll kind of do a rapid
- 1:07:24fire of like the guys that like we're just mash and sell on and we're
- 1:07:28trying to move on from because closers on bad teams end up being sixth and
- 1:07:32seventh inning relievers on good teams. First one that I want to actually like,
- 1:07:39I think we would have actually had the most to say about him because
- 1:07:42he would have actually had a chance to close it. I think in a
- 1:07:45couple of situations, is Jordan Hicks again getting back to the Cardinals, but
- 1:07:49they the Cardinals announced today that they were trying to negotiate with Jordan Hicks on
- 1:07:55a long term deal, so I'm not sure, but like what that is
- 1:08:00going to do for the Cardinals long term, it's a little bit of like
- 1:08:03early reminiscent of the Daniel Bard situation I just reference, and so we'll see
- 1:08:11how that works out for the Cardinals. But Jordan Hicks might end up keeping
- 1:08:14that closer role, so we'll kind of set him aside. So the first
- 1:08:17one I wanted to cover was the Marlins bullpen getting back to that Jorge Lopez
- 1:08:21trade. I don't know if they're done. Aj Puck has been real rough
- 1:08:27as of late. He's gotten the dreaded vote of competence from Skip Shoemaker,
- 1:08:31and it looks like Tanner Scott might be lining up for some of those saves.
- 1:08:35Jorge Lopez probably will, but I'm not sure any three of them end
- 1:08:41up as the closer by this time, kind of late next week after the
- 1:08:45deadline for the Marlins that I think there's probably going to be another guy or
- 1:08:50two that comes in and they made even I mean, who knows, they
- 1:08:54might do something drastic like moving Eurie to the bullpen or something real crazy just
- 1:09:00to try to compete. But um, yeah, if you've got any of
- 1:09:02those dudes, I would start trying to shuffle around and prepare for your lack
- 1:09:08of saves going forward. Yeah, I think you're right, And I think
- 1:09:11of any guy if I if I'm willing to hold onto one of those guys,
- 1:09:14it's probably Tayner Scott. He's looked pretty much lights out, but I
- 1:09:17think he's also probably one of the most likely to move because of Because of
- 1:09:20that, I think the name of the game with relievers. And this is
- 1:09:23where we got back to the Jordan Hicks. I'm baffled that the cardinal are
- 1:09:27trying to extend the guy right now because he's been all over the place for
- 1:09:30the last few years and he like has two good months he's like, well,
- 1:09:32clearly the closure of the future, and like in the reliever space,
- 1:09:35like the time to sell is when they're when they are hot, unless they
- 1:09:40are you know, that centerpiece of the organization they've they've got, you know,
- 1:09:43that long term play on them. Like even some of those guys like
- 1:09:45thinking, well, Craig krem Kimberl when he kind of fell off the map.
- 1:09:49You know, like the relievers are, they're so uh you know here
- 1:09:54and there that you got to sell them. So you know, I'm another
- 1:09:57I'm gonna call it another bullpen here for us that similar to the Marlins,
- 1:10:00the Diamondbacks, Uh, Diamondbacks do look like they're going to be buyers.
- 1:10:05Um, I'm not quite sure. They keep sending some mixed signals of how
- 1:10:10aggressive they're going to be. But you know that that bullpton is a little
- 1:10:14bit all over the place. Um, you know, you got Andrew Chaffin,
- 1:10:16who was the closer, Then you got mccow that was the closer.
- 1:10:21Now maybe Ginkl is the closer. I'm not I'm not sure who's the closer
- 1:10:26in most days. I think Nkle's kind of got the inside shot right now.
- 1:10:29But if if you're looking to if they're looking to to compete for the
- 1:10:31playoffs, they're probably bringing somebody in. I think that's actually a really interesting
- 1:10:35slanting spot for somebody like Jordan Hicks. They could land there and then have
- 1:10:40that goal and have that role. Sorry, and so I think you gotta
- 1:10:45sell the vast majority of the d Back's bullpen, just like you're talking about
- 1:10:47the Marlins bullpen. There's there's just not going to be the guys there long
- 1:10:51term because they need some stability there at the back of the back of the
- 1:10:56game. Yeah, and then I'll just ragle off real quick. There's a
- 1:10:59fun of closers that are closing for losing teams that are gonna end up on
- 1:11:05one of those roles, like I was saying, like in the sixth seventh
- 1:11:08inning for a bullpen of a good team. So we've got four of them.
- 1:11:13Trevor Bay of the Oakland Athletics, Kendall Graveman of the White Sox,
- 1:11:17Scott Barlow of the Royals, and Alex Lang of the Tigers. All those
- 1:11:21guys are sitting in closers positions right now getting saves for you, and they
- 1:11:26won't be this time next week. So find a contingency plan. Either work
- 1:11:30on trying to see where you can find some extra saves, or move out
- 1:11:33from underneath these guys while you can. So Yeah, I think that really
- 1:11:39there was a very very large overview of a bunch of different values that I
- 1:11:44think could go up and down with this trade. Deadline, So I'm really
- 1:11:47looking forward to it. I think it's going to be a bananas deadline with
- 1:11:50all the teams in the race. So it'll be interesting for us to talk
- 1:11:55next week after some of the dust is ship settled, or at least the
- 1:11:59dust that we see that it's settled that hasn't zoomed to pass us on amable
- 1:12:02trade dreamers. Yeah, I think you're right. I think it'll be interesting
- 1:12:04to look back next week to see how much of this came true, uh,
- 1:12:09and how and who moved that we did not expect to move, and
- 1:12:13you know, really increase or decrease or value um, you know, to
- 1:12:16your point, I think there's going to be a lot of movement. I
- 1:12:19think there's so many teams that are are that think they're in it. Whether
- 1:12:21they're in it or not, they think they're in it. And I think
- 1:12:25that's actually part of the excitement now with the expanded playoffs, is that there's
- 1:12:29a little bit more teams that think that they can that they can play and
- 1:12:31they can make a chance and then get a run deep at the end of
- 1:12:33in October. So I think it'll be interesting to see what the trade deadline
- 1:12:38brings. I think it's a built in topic for next week for us to
- 1:12:41kind of do a quick debrief there and see if any of our predictions come
- 1:12:45true, um or if there's something somebody has up the sleeve that we just
- 1:12:49did not see coming. So with a Tani off the market, I think
- 1:12:54the big question mark has been answered, but there's still going to be some
- 1:12:58some pretty good movement here over the next few days. And I think this
- 1:13:00this weekend it really really starts to ramp up. Yeah, and I agree
- 1:13:04that, like, I think this two side coin is going to add a
- 1:13:08third side next week as we like can analyze what the values will be after
- 1:13:13the trade deadline, and we can just keep juicing the trade deadline for content
- 1:13:15as long as we can. Well, I'm just very proud that we were
- 1:13:20able to talk about a three sided coin bringing spaghetti to a White Sox game,
- 1:13:26and amongst all of our topics a day, including talk of rectors.
- 1:13:29So I think we have done a good job circling wagons on any topic that
- 1:13:33we possibly could have today. So we'll be back next week and I think
- 1:13:36it'll be a great, great episode then as well. Yeah, and Jeremy,
- 1:13:41can you remind people where to find you on socials and then we'll ride
- 1:13:45out. Yep, find me out on Twitter or x at Jay Brewer one
- 1:13:49seven. You can also find me on ras ball on the weekends doing the
- 1:13:54hitter profiles top one hundred lists for our hitters as well. So reach out
- 1:13:58to me any time. I'm glad to engage and have a chat about actually
- 1:14:03argument of where I'm at with the top one hundred hitters. I think that's
- 1:14:06a pastime of a few raz ball readers. I want to just make sure
- 1:14:10that they get the jab in for whatever I got wrong, which every week
- 1:14:14is wrong right and there's no there's no right answers for this. That's that's
- 1:14:16the beauty of the business exactly. And uh yeah, I'm Michael Art.
- 1:14:19You can also find me at rasball doing waper wires on Saturdays. You can
- 1:14:23find me on x slash Twitter while it's still floating around at in Cool seven.
