Chapter thirty. In this chapter we have an account of the increase Numeral one
0:08
of Jacob's family. Eight children. More we find registered in this chapter Dan
0:13
and Naptali by Bilhah Rachel's maid, Verses one through eight, Gad and Asher
0:19
by Zilpah, Leah's maid, Verses nine through thirteen, isaacar Zebulen and Dinah
0:26
by Leah Verses fourteen through twenty one, and last of all, Joseph by
0:31
Rachel Verses twenty two through twenty four, Numeral two. Of Jacob's estate,
0:39
he makes a new bargain with Laban Verses twenty five through thirty four. And
0:44
in the six years further service he did to Laban, God wonderfully blessed him
0:49
so that his stock of cattle became very considerable Verses thirty five through forty three.
0:55
Herein was fulfilled the blessing with which Isaac dismissed him. Chapter twenty eight,
1:00
verse three, God make THEE fruitful and multiply THEE. Even these small
1:04
matters concerning Jacob's house and field, though they seem inconsiderable, are improvable for
1:11
our learning. For the scriptures were written not for princes and statesmen to instruct
1:15
them in politics, but for all people, even the meanest, to direct
1:19
them in their families and callings. Yet some things are here recorded concerning Jacob,
1:26
not for imitation, but for admonition increase of Jacob's family b. C.
1:33
Seventeen forty five, verse one. And when Rachel saw that she bare
1:38
Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister and said, unto Jacob, give
1:42
me children, or else I die verse two. And Jacob's anger was kindled
1:48
against Rachel, and he said, am I in God's stead? Who hath
1:52
withheld from thee the fruit of the womb verse three. And she said,
1:57
behold my maid, Bilhah, go in unto her, and she shall bear
2:00
upon my knees, that I may also have children by her verse four.
2:06
And she gave him Bilhah, her handmaid to wife, and Jacob went in
2:09
unto her verse five, and Bilha conceived and bear Jacob a son. Verse
2:15
six. And Rachel said, God hath judged me, and hath also heard
2:20
my voice, and hath given me a son. Therefore she called his name
2:23
Dan verse seven. And Bilhah, Rachel's maid, conceived again and bear Jacob
2:30
a second son verse eight. And Rachel said, with great wrestlings have I
2:35
wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed? And she called his name
2:38
Naptalai verse nine. When Leah saw that she had left bearing, she took
2:45
Zilpah her maid, and gave her Jacob to wife verse ten. And Zilpah
2:50
Liah's maid bear Jacob a son verse eleven. And Leah said, a troop
2:54
cometh, and she called his name Gad verse twelve. And Zilpah's may bear
3:00
Jacob a second son verse thirteen. And Leah said, happy am I,
3:05
for the daughters will call me blessed, and she called his name Asher.
3:10
We have here the bad consequences of that strange marriage which Jacob made with the
3:15
two sisters. Here is numeral one, an unhappy disagreement between him and Rachel
3:21
verse one and two, occasioned not so much by her own barrenness as by
3:25
her sister's fruitfulness. Rebecca, the only wife of Isaac, was long childless,
3:30
and yet we find no uneasiness between her and Isaac. But here,
3:35
because Leah bears children, Rachel cannot live peaceably with Jacob. Number one,
3:40
Rachel frets she envied her sister verse one. Envy is grieving at the good
3:46
of another, than which no sin is more offensive to God, nor more
3:51
injurious to our neighbor and ourselves. She considered not that it was God that
3:55
made the difference, and that though in this single instance her sister was preferred
4:00
before her, yet in other things she had the advantage. Let us carefully
4:04
watch against all the risings and workings of this passion in our minds. Let
4:10
not our eye be evil towards any of our fellow servants, because our masters
4:14
is good. But this was not all she said to Jacob, give me
4:17
children, or else I die. Note we are very apt to err in
4:21
our desires of temporal mercies, as Rachel here Subscript one. One child would
4:29
not content her. But because Leah has more than one, she must have
4:32
more too. Give me children Subscript two. Her heart is inordinately set upon
4:39
it, and if she have not what she would have, she will throw
4:43
away her life and all the comforts of it. Give them to me,
4:46
or else I die. That is, I shall fret myself to death.
4:50
The want of this satisfaction will shorten my days. Some think she threatens Jacob
4:56
to lay violent hands upon herself if she could not obtain this mercy. Subscript
5:00
three. She did not apply to God by prayer, but to Jacob only
5:05
forgetting that children are a heritage of the Lord. Psalms. One hundred and
5:11
twenty seven, Verse three. We wrong both God and ourselves when our eye
5:16
is more to men the instruments of our crosses and comforts, than to God.
5:20
The author observe a difference between Rachel's asking for this mercy. In Hannah's
5:27
First Samuel, Chapter one, verse ten, Rachel envied, Hannah wept.
5:32
Rachel must have children, and she died of the second. Hannah prayed for
5:36
one child, and she had four more. Rachel is importunate in peremptory.
5:42
Hannah is submissive and devout. If thou wilt give me a child, I
5:46
will give him to the Lord. Let Hannah be imitated and not Rachel,
5:51
and let our desires be always under the direction in control of reason and religion.
6:00
Number two. Jacob chides it most justly. He loved Rachel, and
6:04
therefore reproved her for what she said amiss. Verse two. Note faithful reproofs
6:11
and products and instances of true affection Psalms. One hundred and forty one,
6:15
Verse five. Proverbs twenty seven, verses five and six. Job reproved his
6:21
wife when she spoke the language of the foolish women Job two, verse ten.
6:27
See First Corinthians, chapter seven, verse sixteen. He was angry,
6:31
not at the person, but at the sin. He expressed himself so as
6:35
to show his displeasure. Note sometimes it is requisite that a reproof should be
6:41
given warm, like a medical potion, not too hot lest it scald the
6:45
patient, yet not cold lest it prove ineffectual. It was a very grave
6:49
and pious reply which Jacob gave to Rachel's peevish demand, am I in God's
6:55
stead? The Chaldee paraphrases it, well, dost thou ask son of me?
7:00
Aughtest thou not to ask them from before the Lord? The Arabic reads
7:03
it, am I above God? Can I give thee? That which God
7:06
denies thee? This was said like a plain man. Observe Subscript one.
7:13
He acknowledges the hand of God in the affliction which he was a sharer with
7:16
her in He hath withheld the fruit of the womb. Note whatever we want,
7:21
it is God that withholds it. A sovereign lord, most wise holy
7:26
and just, that may do what he will with his own, and is
7:30
debtor to no man that never did, nor ever can do any wrong to
7:33
any of his creatures. The keys of the Clouds, of the Heart,
7:38
of the Grave, and of the womb are four keys which God had in
7:42
his hand, and which the Rabbins say he entrusts neither with angels nor seraphim.
7:47
See Revelations chapter three, verse seven, Job chapter eleven and verse ten,
7:55
and Job Chapter twelve, verse fourteen. Subscript two. He acknowledges his
8:01
own inability to alter what God had appointed. Am I in God's stead?
8:05
What dost thou make a god of me? Dios quiro gods ilifacit, He
8:11
to whom we offer supplications is to us a god. Note sub point one.
8:16
There is no creature that is or can be to us in God's stead.
8:22
God may be to us instead of any creature, as the sun instead
8:24
of the moon and stars. But the moon and all the stars will not
8:28
be to us instead of the sun. No creature's wisdom, power and love
8:33
will be to us instead of God's sub point two. It is therefore our
8:39
sin and folly to place any creature in God's stead, and to place that
8:43
confidence in any creature which is to be placed in God only Numeral two,
8:50
an unhappy agreement between him and the two handmaids. Number one. At the
8:54
persuasion of Rachel, he took Bilha, her handmaid, to wife that,
8:58
according to the us usage of those times, his children by her might be
9:01
adopted and owned as her mistress's children. Verse three. She would rather have
9:07
children by reputation than none at all, children that she might fancy to be
9:11
her own and call her own. Though they were not so, One would
9:15
think her own sister's children were nearer akin to her than her maids, and
9:18
she might, with more satisfaction, have made them her own if she had
9:22
so pleased. But so natural is it for us all to be fond of
9:26
power. Children that she had a right to rule were more desirable to her
9:31
than children that she had more reason to love. And as an early instance
9:35
of her dominion over the children born in her apartment, she takes a pleasure
9:39
in giving them names that carry in them nothing but marks of emulation with her
9:43
sister, as if she had overcome her subscript one at law, she calls
9:50
the first son of her handmaid Dan judgment, saying God hath judged me verse
9:56
six, that is given sentence in my favor. Subscript two. In battle,
10:03
she calls the next Naptali wrestlings, saying I have wrestled with my sister
10:07
and have prevailed. Verse eight. As if all Jacob's sons must be born
10:13
men of contention, See what roots of bitterness, envy, and strife are,
10:18
and what mischief they make among relations? Number two, At the persuasion
10:24
of Leah, he took Zilpah her handmaid to wife. Also verse nine,
10:28
Rachel had done that absurd and preposterous thing of giving her maid to her husband
10:33
in emulation with Leah. And now Leah, because she missed one year in
10:37
bearing children, does the same to be even with her, or rather to
10:41
keep before her? See the power of jealousy and rivalship, and admire the
10:46
wisdom of the divine appointment which unites one man and one woman only for God
10:52
hath called us to peace and purity. First Corinthians, Chapter seven, Verse
10:56
fifteen. Two sons Zilpah bore to Jacob, whom Leah looked upon herself as
11:03
entitled to, in token of which she called one gad verse eleven, promising
11:09
herself a little troop of children, and children are the militia of a family.
11:13
They fill the quiver Psalms one hundred and twenty seven, Verses four and
11:18
five. The others she called Asher happy, thinking herself happy in him,
11:24
and promising herself that her neighbors would think so too. The daughters will call
11:28
me blessed Verse thirteen. Note it is an instance of the vanity of the
11:35
world and the foolishness bound up in our hearts, that most people value themselves
11:39
and govern themselves more by reputation than either by reason or religion. They think
11:46
themselves blessed if the daughters do but call them so. There was much amiss
11:50
in the contest and competition between these two sisters. Yet God brought good out
11:56
of this evil for the time being now at hand, when the seat of
11:58
Abraham must begin to increase and multiply. Thus Jacob's family was replenished with twelve
12:05
sons, heads of the thousands of Israel, from whom the celebrated twelve tribes
12:09
descended and were named Verse fourteen. And Reuben went in the days of wheat
12:16
harvest and found mandrakes in the field and brought them unto his mother Leah.
12:20
Then Rachel said to Leah, give me I pray THEE of thy sons Mandrakes
12:26
verse fifteen. And she said, unto her, is it a small matter
12:30
that thou hast taken my husband? And wouldst thou take away my sons mandrakes
12:33
also and Rachel said, therefore he shall lie with THEE tonight for thy sons
12:39
Mandrakes verse sixteen. And Jacob came out of the field in the evening,
12:43
and Leah went out to meet him and said, thou must come in unto
12:48
me, for surely I have hired THEE with my sons Mandrakes. And he
12:52
lay with her that night verse seventeen. And God hearkened unto Leah, and
12:58
she conceived and bear Jacob of the fifth son verse eighteen. And Leah said,
13:03
God hath given me my hire because I have given my maiden to my
13:07
husband. And she called his name Isaacar verse nineteen. And Leah conceived again
13:13
and bear Jacob the sixth son, verse twenty. And Leah said, God
13:20
hath endued me with a good dowry. Now will my husband dwell with me
13:22
because I have borne him six sons. And she called his name Zebulen verse
13:28
twenty one. And afterwards she bare a daughter and called her name Dinah verse
13:35
twenty two. And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her and opened
13:39
her wim verse twenty three. And she conceived and bear a son, and
13:45
said, God hath taken away my reproach verse twenty four. And she called
13:50
his name Joseph, and said, the Lord shall add to me another son.
13:54
Here is numeral one. Leah fruitful again after she had for some time
14:00
left off bearing Jacob. It should seem associated more with Rachel than with Leah.
14:05
The law of Moses supposes it a common case that if a man had
14:09
two wives, one would be beloved and the other hated Deuteronomy, chapter twenty
14:13
one, verse fifteen. But at length Rachel's strong passions betrayed her into a
14:18
bargain with Leah that Jacob should return to her apartment. Reuben, a little
14:22
lad five or six years old, playing in the field, found man drags
14:26
du deaeum. It is uncertain what they were. The critics are not agreed
14:31
about them. We are sure they were some rarities, either fruits or flowers,
14:35
that were very pleasant to the smell. Canticles Chapter seven, verse thirteen.
14:41
Note the God of Nature has provided not only for our necessities, but
14:46
for our delights. There are products of the earth in the exposed fields,
14:48
as well as in the planted protected gardens, that are very valuable and useful.
14:54
How plentifully is Nature's house furnished and her table spread. Her precious fruits
14:58
offer themselves to be gathered by the hands of little children. It is a
15:03
laudable custom of the devout Jews, when they find pleasure, Suppose in eating
15:07
an apple, to lift up their hearts and say, blessed be he that
15:11
made this fruit pleasant, or in smelling a flower, blessed be he that
15:15
made this flower sweet. Some think these mandrakes were Jessamine flowers. Whatever they
15:20
were, Rachel could not see them in Leah's hands where the child had placed
15:24
them, but she must covet them. She cannot bear the want of these
15:28
pretty flowers, but will purchase them at any rate. Note there may be
15:33
great sin and folly in the inordinate desire of a small thing. Leah takes
15:37
this advantage, as Jacob had of Esauce, coveting his red pottage, to
15:43
obtain that which was justly due to her, but to which Rachel would not
15:46
otherwise have consented. Note strong passions often thwart one another, and those cannot
15:52
but be continually uneasy that are hurried on by them. Leah is overjoyed that
15:58
she shall have her husband's company again, that her family might yet further be
16:02
built up, which is the blessing she desires and devoutly prays for, As
16:06
is intimated verse seventeen, where it is said God hearkened unto Leah. The
16:11
learned Bishop Patrick very well suggests here that the true reason of this contest between
16:15
Jacob's wives for his company, and their giving him their maids to be his
16:19
wives, was the earnest desire they had to fulfill the promise made to Abraham,
16:25
and now lately renewed to Jacob, that his seed should be as the
16:29
stars of heaven for multitude, and that in one seed of his the Messiah,
16:33
all the nations of the earth should be blessed. And he thinks it
16:37
would have been below the dignity of this sacred history to take such particular notice
16:41
of these things, if there had not been some such great consideration in them.
16:47
Leah was now blessed with two sons. The first she called isaacar a
16:52
Hire, reckoning herself well repaid for her mandrakes nay, which is a strange
16:56
construction of the providence rewarded for giving her maid to her husband. Note we
17:03
abuse God's mercy when we reckon that his favors countenance and patronize our follies.
17:07
The others she called zebulen dwelling, owning God's bounty to her. God has
17:14
endowed me with a good dowry Verse twenty. Jacob had not endowed her when
17:18
he married her, nor had he wherewithal in possession. But she reckons a
17:22
family of children, not a bill of charges, but a good dowry Psalms.
17:26
One hundred and thirteen, Verse nine. She promises herself more of her
17:32
husband's company, now that she had borne him six sons, and that in
17:34
love to his children, at least he would often visit her lodgings mention his
17:40
maid verse twenty one of the birth of a daughter, Dinah, because of
17:44
the following story concerning her chapter thirty four. Perhaps Jacob had other daughters,
17:49
though their names are not registered. Numeral two Rachel fruitful At last, Verse
17:56
twenty two, God remembered Rachel, whom he sees to have forgotten, and
18:00
hearkened to her, whose prayers had been long denied. And then she bore
18:04
a son. Note as God justly denies the mercy we have been inordinately desirous
18:11
of, so sometimes he graciously grants at length that which we have long waited
18:15
for. He corrects our folly, and yet considers our frame and does not
18:19
contend forever. Rachel called her son Joseph, which in Hebrew is akin to
18:25
two words of a contrary signification, asaf absdud. He has taken away my
18:32
reproach, as if the greatest mercy she had in this son was that she
18:36
had saved her credit, and Joseph had eidot. The Lord shall add to
18:41
me another son, which may be looked upon either as the language of her
18:45
inordinate desire. She scarcely knows how to be thankful for one unless she may
18:49
be sure of another, or of her faith. She takes this mercy as
18:53
an earnest of further mercy. Has God given me his grace? I may
18:59
call it Joseph and say he shall add more grace? Has He given me
19:02
his joy? I may call it Joseph and say he will give me more
19:06
joy has he begun, and shall he not make an end Jacob's bargain with
19:11
Laban b. C. Seventeen forty five, verse twenty five. And it
19:18
came to pass when Rachel had borne Joseph, that Jacob said, unto Laban,
19:22
send me away, that I may go unto mine own place and to
19:23
my country verse twenty six. Give me my wives and my children, for
19:29
whom I have served THEE, and let me go, for thou knowest my
19:32
service which I have done THEE verse twenty seven. And Laban said, unto
19:37
him, I pray THEE if I have found favor in thine eyes terry.
19:41
For I have learned by experience that the Lord hath blessed me for thy sake
19:45
verse twenty eight. And he said, appoint me thy wages, and I
19:48
will give it verse twenty nine. And he said, unto him, thou
19:51
knowest how I have served THEE, and how thy cattle was with me verse
19:55
thirty. For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it
19:59
is now in Crea done to a multitude. And the Lord hath blessed THEE
20:02
since my coming. And now when shall I provide for mine own house?
20:06
Also verse thirty one, And he said, what shall I give thee And
20:11
Jacob said, thou shalt not give me anything. If thou wilt do this
20:15
thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock verse thirty two.
20:19
I will pass through all thy flock to day, removing from thence all
20:23
the speckled and spotted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the sheep,
20:26
and the spotted and speckled among the goats, And of such shall be my
20:30
higre verse thirty three. So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to
20:37
come, when it shall come for my hire before thy face, every one
20:41
that is not speckled and spotted among the goats and brown among the sheep that
20:45
shall be counted stolen with me verse thirty four. And Laban said, behold,
20:51
I would it might be according to thy word verse thirty five. And
20:55
he removed that day the he goats that were ring straked and spotted, and
20:59
all the she goats that were speckled and spotted, and every one that had
21:02
some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave
21:04
them into the hand of his sons verse thirty six. And he set three
21:10
days journey betwixt himself and Jacob, and Jacob fed the rest of Laban's flocks.
21:15
We have here numeral one Jacob's thoughts of home. He faithfully served his
21:21
time out with Laban, even his second apprenticeship, though he was an old
21:25
man, had a large family to provide for, and it was high time
21:29
for him to set up for himself. Though Laban's service was hard, and
21:33
he had cheated him in the first bargain he had made, Yet Jacob honestly
21:37
performs his engagements. Note a good man. Though he swear to his own
21:41
hurt will not change. And though others have deceived us, this will not
21:45
justify us in deceiving them. Our rule is to do as we would be
21:49
done by, not as we are done by. Jacob's term having expired,
21:55
he begs leave to be gone. Verse twenty five observed Number one. He
22:00
retained his affection for the land of Canaan, not only because it was the
22:04
land of his nativity and his father and mother were there whom he longed to
22:07
see, but because it was the land of promise, and in token of
22:12
his dependence upon the promise of it. Though he sojourn in Haran, he
22:15
can by no means think of settling there. Thus should we be effected towards
22:21
our heavenly country, looking upon ourselves as strangers here, viewing the heavenly country
22:26
as our home, and longing to be there. As soon as the days
22:29
of our service upon earth are numbered and finished. We must not think of
22:33
taking root here, for this is not our place and country. He Brews,
22:37
Chapter thirteen, Verse fourteen, number two. He was desirous to go
22:44
to Canaan, though he had a great family to take with him, and
22:48
no provision yet made for them. He had got wives and children with Laban,
22:52
but nothing else. Yet. He does not solicit Laban to give him
22:56
either a portion with his wives or the maintenance of some of his children.
23:00
No, all his request is give me my wives and my children, and
23:03
send me away. Verses twenty five and twenty six. Note those that trust
23:10
in God and his providence and promise, though they have great families and small
23:14
incomes, can cheerfully hope that he who sends mouths will send meat. He
23:19
who feeds the brood of the ravens will not starve the seed of the righteous.
23:25
Numeral two. Laban's desire of his stay Verse twenty seven in love to
23:30
himself, not to Jacob, or to his wives or children. Laban endeavors
23:36
to persuade him to continue his chief shepherd in treating him by the regard.
23:41
He bore him not to leave him if I have found favor in thy eyes
23:45
terry. Note churlish selfish men know how to give good words when it is
23:51
to serve their own ends. Laban found that his stock had wonderfully increased with
23:56
Jacob's good management, and he owns it with very good expressions of respect,
24:00
both to God and Jacob. I have learned by experience that the Lord has
24:04
blessed me for thy sake. Observe Number one Laban's learning. I have learned
24:11
by experience. Note there is many a profitable good lesson to be learned by
24:17
experience. We are very unapt scholars if we have not learned by experience the
24:22
evil of sin, the treachery of our own hearts, the vanity of the
24:26
world, the goodness of God, the gains of Godliness, and the like.
24:32
Number two Laban's lesson. He owns subscript one that his prosperity was owing
24:37
to God's blessing. The Lord has blessed me. Note worldly men who choose
24:44
their portion in this life are often blessed with an abundance of this world's goods.
24:48
Common blessings are given plentifully to many that have no title to covenant blessings.
24:55
Subscript three. That Jacob's piety had brought that blessing upon him. The
25:00
Lord has blessed me not for my own sake. Let not such a man
25:04
as Laban, that lives without God in the world think that he shall receive
25:08
anything of the Lord James, Chapter one, verse seven, But for thy
25:14
sake. Note sub point one. Good men are blessings to the places where
25:19
they live, even where they live meanly and obscurely, as Jacob in the
25:25
field and Joseph in the prison, Chapter thirty nine, verse twenty three.
25:30
Sub Point two. God often blesses bad men with outward mercies for the sake
25:37
of their godly relations, though it is seldom that they have either the wit
25:41
to see it or the grace to own it, as Laban did here Numeral
25:47
three. The new bargain they came upon. Laban's craft and coveteousness took advantage
25:52
of Jacob's plainness, honesty, and good nature, and perceiving that Jacob began
25:56
to be won upon by his fair speeches. Instead of making him a generous
26:00
offer in bidding high as he ought to have done all things considered, he
26:04
puts it upon him to make his demands Verse twenty eight. Appoint me thy
26:10
wages, knowing he would be very modest in them, and would ask less
26:14
than he could for shame offer. Jacob accordingly makes a proposal to him,
26:18
in which number one he shows what reason he had to insist upon so much,
26:23
considering subscript one that Laban was bound in gratitude to do well for him
26:30
because he had served him not only faithfully, but very successfully Verse thirty.
26:34
Yet here observe how he speaks like himself very modestly. Laban had said,
26:40
the Lord has blessed me for thy sake. Jacob will not say so.
26:44
But the Lord has blessed thee since my coming. Note humble saints take more
26:48
pleasure in doing good than in hearing of it. Again, subscript too,
26:53
that he himself was bound in duty to take care of his own family.
26:57
Now, when shall I provide for mine own house? Also note faith and
27:03
charity, though they are excellent things, must not take us off from making
27:07
necessary provisions for our own support and the support of our families. We must,
27:12
like Jacob, trust in the Lord and do good, and yet we
27:15
must like him, provide for our own houses. Also, he that does
27:19
not the latter is worse than an infidel one Timothy, Verse eight, number
27:25
two. He is willing to refer himself to the providence of God, which
27:27
he knew extends itself to the smallest things, even the color of the cattle,
27:33
And he will be content to have for his wages the sheep and goats
27:36
of such and such a color speckled, spotted, and brown, which should
27:40
hereafter be brought forth Verses thirty two and thirty three. This he thinks will
27:44
be a most effectual way, both to prevent Laban's cheating him and to secure
27:48
himself from being suspected of cheating Laban. Some think he chose this color because
27:55
in Canaan it was generally most desired and delighted in their shepherds and Canaan are
28:00
called nikohim Amos Chapter one, verse one. The word here used for speckled,
28:04
and Laban was willing to consent to this bargain because he thought off the
28:10
few he has that were now speckled and spotted were separated from the rest,
28:14
which by agreement was to be done immediately. The body of the flock which
28:18
Jacob was to tend, being of one color either all black or all white,
28:22
would produce few are none of mixed colors, and so he should have
28:26
Jacob's service for nothing or next to nothing. According to this bargain, those
28:30
few that were parti colored were separated and put into the hands of Laban's sons
28:36
and sent three days journey off. So great was Laban's jealousy lest any of
28:41
them should mix with the rest of the flock to the advantage of Jacob.
28:45
And now a fine bargain Jacob has made for himself. Is this his providing
28:49
for his own house? To put it upon such an uncertainty. If these
28:53
cattle bring forth, as usually cattle do, young ones of the same color
28:57
with themselves, he he must still serve for nothing, and be a drudge
29:02
and a beggar all the days of his life. But he knows whom he
29:06
has trusted, And the event showed subscript one that he took the best way
29:11
that could be taken with Laban, who otherwise would certainly have been too hard
29:15
for him, and subscript two, that it was not in vain to rely
29:19
upon the divine providence, which owns and blesses honest, humble diligence. Those
29:26
that find men whom they deal with unjust and unkind, shall not find God.
29:30
So but some way or other he will recompense the injured, and be
29:33
a good paymaster to those that commit their cause to him. Jacob's Ingenuous Policy
29:41
b. C. Seventeen forty five, Verse thirty seven. And Jacob took
29:47
him rods of green poplar and of the hazel and chestnut tree, and pilled
29:51
white strakes in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods
29:53
Verse thirty eight. And he set the rods which he had pilled before the
29:57
flocks and the gutters in the watering tree when the flocks came to drink,
30:02
that they should conceive when they came to drink verse thirty nine. And the
30:06
flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattle ringstriked, speckled, and
30:11
spotted Verse forty. And Jacob did separate the lambs and set the faces of
30:17
the flocks toward the ringstriked, and all the brown in the flock of Laban,
30:21
And he put his own flocks by themselves, and put them not unto
30:23
Laban's cattle verse forty one. And it came to pass, whensoever the stronger
30:30
cattle did conceive, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle
30:33
and the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods verse forty two.
30:38
But when the cattle were feeble, he put them not in. So the
30:41
feebler were Labans and the stronger Jacobs verse forty three. And the man increased
30:48
exceedingly and had much cattle, and made servants and men servants, and camels
30:52
and asses. Here is Jacob's honest policy to make his bargain more advantageous to
30:59
himself then it was likely to be. If he had not taken some course
31:03
to help himself, it would have been a bad bargain, indeed, which
31:07
he knew Laban would never consider, or rather would be well pleased to see
31:11
him a loser. By so little did Laban consult any one's interest but his
31:15
own. Now, Jacob's contrivances were number one, to set peeled sticks before
31:22
the cattle where they were watered. They're looking much at those unusual PARTI colored
31:26
sticks by the power of imagination, they might bring forth the young ones in
31:30
like manner PARTI colored, Verses thirty seven through thirty nine. Probably this custom
31:36
was commonly used by the shepherds of Canaan, who coveted to have their cattle
31:40
of this motley color. Note it becomes a man to be master of his
31:45
trade, whatever it is, and to be not only industrious but ingenuous in
31:48
it, and to be versed in all its lawful arts and mysteries. For
31:52
what is a man but his trade? There is a discretion which God teaches
31:57
the husbandman as plain a tree as that is, and which he ought to
32:01
learn. Isaiah, chapter twenty eight, Verse twenty six, Number two.
32:07
When he began to have a stalk of ringstraked and brown, he contrived to
32:12
set them first, and to put the faces of the rest towards them,
32:15
with the same design as in the former contrivance, but would not let his
32:19
own that were of one color. Verse forty strong impressions, it seems,
32:23
are made by the eye, with which therefore we have need to make a
32:28
covenant. Number three. When he found that his projects succeeded through the special
32:34
blessing of God upon it, he contrived by using it only with a stronger
32:37
cattle, to secure to himself those who are most valuable, leaving the feebler
32:43
to Laban verse forty one and verse forty two. Thus Jacob increased exceedingly verse
32:50
forty three, and grew very rich in a little time. This success of
32:54
his policy, it is true, was not sufficient to justify it if there
32:59
had been anything fraudulent or unjust in it, which we are sure there was
33:04
not, for he did it by divine direction Chapter thirty one, verse twelve.
33:09
Nor was there anything in the thing itself but the honest improvement of a
33:14
fair bargain, which the Divine providence wonderfully prospered, both in justice to Jacob,
33:20
whom Laban had wronged and dealt hardly with, and in pursuance of the
33:23
particular promises made to him of the tokens of the divine favor. Note,
33:29
those who, while their beginning is small, are humble and honest, contented,
33:32
and industrious, are in a likely way to see their latter end greatly
33:37
increasing. He that is faithful and a little shall be entrusted with more.
33:42
He that is faithful and that which is another man's shall be entrusted with something
33:45
of his own. Jacob, who had been a just servant, became a
33:51
rich master. End of chapter thirty
