Liberia Takes 1,200 Deportees from U.S. | Charleston News
Liberia is preparing to welcome up to 1,200 U.S. deportees under a major new immigration deal — the first group of 20 could arrive as early as Thursday. Though many are African, the deportees also include people from North, South America, and the Caribbean. While Liberia’s government calls it a humanitarian gesture and says arrivals can seek asylum or leave freely, critics worry it may circumvent U.S. asylum protections by sending individuals to countries they don’t know or have no ties to.
