- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: These lessons are inspired by great artists, authors, and thinkers, both past and present.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: For more, you can visit us at dailywriterlife.com.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: If you talk to most writers, there's one thing they almost all universally hate marketing.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Most writers dislike the thought of promoting themselves or going through all the technical hoops they think they need in order to market well.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Do you share this viewpoint as well?
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Do you hate marketing?
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: If so, it's no wonder because almost all of our first hand experience with marketing tells us that it's distasteful.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: For example, you've seen the author who has an obnoxious book launch.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: They post multiple times a day on social media about their book.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: For weeks on end, they try to get other people to buy and promote their book.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: The whole endeavor seems completely one sided.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: The author's only interested in what you can do for them.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: But what if this approach is all wrong?
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: What if we turned the concept of marketing completely on its head and made it all about other people?
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: What if good marketing was actually the kindest and most thoughtful thing we could possibly do for our readers?
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Derek Sivers is the founder of CD Baby and the author of the new book, Your Music and Your People.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: The book, I would say, is essential reading not just for musicians, but for anybody doing creative work.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: He writes this.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Marketing just means being considerate.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Marketing means making it easy for people to notice you, relate to you, remember you, and tell their friends about you.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Marketing means listening for what people need and creating something surprisingly tailored for them.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Marketing means getting to know people, making a deeper connection and keeping in touch.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: All of these are just considerate, looking at things from the other person's point of view and doing what's best for them.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Your marketing strategies will be different than another writer's way of doing things, but here's the principle you should always remember when it comes to sharing your work.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: People are not a means to an end.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: People are the end.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Everything we do should be focused on making great work for people and then sharing it in a way that brings joy to you and to them.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: And if you're not ultimately writing for people, what else is it for?
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Hey, thanks so much for listening to the Daily Writer Podcast.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: We really appreciate your support and hope you enjoyed this episode.
