[gentle music] Greetings, greetings, fellow stargazers, and boy, don't you just love autumn with the lunar eclipse and the full supermoon?
• 0:29
It is the Weekly Dose of Fat radio hour with your Petroclian hosts, Sven and Gomez. [laughs] I'm speechless. Howdy, everybody. [laughs] I'm a reformed Petroclian. A- what is a Petroclian?
• 0:48
Nobody knows. From other galaxies, brother. I'm gonna have to dig out my Members Only jacket. [laughs] Yeah, yeah. I think I still have one. I had a plaid one for some reason. Welcome to the Weekly Dose of Fat.
• 0:59
Hey, with us today in the role of Chad in Chad and Dave's Great Adventure, it's Mr. JK Living. I want to thanks all the little people.
• 1:07
[laughs] Uh, Fat Bike Radio and the Weekly Dose of Fat is sponsored by the new Surly, my other brother Daryl, tubeless-ready rim. It's lighter, it's faster, it's tubeless.

It's strong for those tender moments of pure cycling bliss. Learn more about bikes and bliss at surlybikes.com. Right on, right on. What's, uh, what's happening on today's show, JK?
• 1:32
We welcome this week's special guest, David Ocks, the tour de sportif of the Fat Bike World Championships in Crested Butte, Colorado.
• 1:43
We will take calls from our listeners to answer the question, "For winter rides, do you prefer rigid or suspension?" We've got fat and plus bike news in the Fatty Farm Field Report, the FFFR.
• 1:56
We've got good news for women that work in the old local bike shoppy, and we may even have some links to share with y'all. Well, you know, I like to say in these situations, boys, top of the morning. Cheers. Cheers.
• 2:12
Again. Cheers and beers. Hey, you know what we didn't do? We didn't tell the folks that Uncle Dick is here strumming on the guitar. Hey, folks. Uncle Dick here- [laughs]... strumming on the guitar.
• 2:27
He's all mi- he's all mic'd up and s- he's got the cans on. Sitting on the can? No. Kicking the can? And, uh, I'm actually taking home a nice tin of fresh bead slip for my tubeless tire application.
• 2:45
Excellent. And we're sending some over to Ken Ba- Blakeyshel, our tire editor, so, uh, we're gonna get our bead slip on here, and you should, too.
• 2:55
So call into the show and that will be part of this week's fabulous prize package, tin of bead slip. Mm-hmm. Cool. I'd call in. Can I call in? [laughs] No.
• 3:09
Employees of Fat Bike Radio and friends and family are not eligible for these promotions. We're sorry. Maybe. Well, let's take a quick break here before we talk to special guest, Mr. David Ocks.
• 3:22
[upbeat music] Hi, I'm Coast Kid, on the Scottish east coast, riding fat, the spiritual home of the UK fat bike riding scene.
• 3:35
In this home, I'm drinking a cider and listening to Gomez and Sven on Fat Bike Radio. Maybe see you all on the coast here sometime. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.
• 3:49
[upbeat music] Hey, welcome back to the radio program, folks. We've got a caller on the line. Howdy do. Who do we have on the Fat Bike Radio call-in line? Good evening, gentlemen.
• 4:07
Travis in, uh, Snowy Acres calling in. Right on, Travis. Uh, we are looking for, um, our friend, David Ocks, from the Crested Butte, Colorado Fat Bike World Championships.
• 4:20
So you wanna hang out and l- let us talk to, uh, to Mr. Dave? Yeah, yeah, sure. Hold on a second. Welcome to the show. It's Sven and Gomez at Fat Bike Radio. We've got Travis lurking in the background. This is Dave Ocks.
• 4:35
How you guys doing? All right, Dave. You're the guy we've been looking for. Unfortunately, we don't have caller ID, so all I see is numbers on the thing. I'm like, "Eh, looks like it might be him," so. Well, very good.
• 4:46
Please welcome to the show the race director of the Fat Bike World Championships in beautiful Crested Butte, Colorado, Mr. David Ocks. And welcome to the show, David. Well, thanks for having me.
• 4:59
Uh, mighty, a big pleasure to be on the show. Yeah, awesome.
• 5:03
Say, the reason that we wanted to have Dave on the show is that so that he could share with our listeners everything about the race that we've all been hearing about, the Fat Bike Worlds.
• 5:13
Yeah, we talked to some people at Interbike, and they thought this was, like, a UCI World Championship sanctioned by USA Cycling, and that the Cylons were perhaps gonna show up and be involved somehow.
• 5:24
So is it true, Dave, that you have Jedi powers? No, I'll say this. We are absolutely and completely 100% unaffiliated.
• 5:32
This is gonna be a sole and a grassroots event, Carson City style, if you will, a lot like the early days and the heyday in Crested Butte when, uh, mountain biking just hit the scenes.
• 5:41
And we're in the same boat in many ways, if you will, with fat biking and just, um, you know, taking to this incredibly, uh, fast-growing and incredible segment of the bike industry.
• 5:53
We're very fat bike-friendly and happy and incredibly glad to be putting on Worlds, but again, absolutely no affiliation with the UCI or any governing body. It's gonna be a sole event. It's gonna be a grassroots event.
• 6:05
So, uh, can you give us a little bit of information about the format? Like, what can people expect? You bet. So we've been working here in Crested Butte on, um, getting fat bike access to the backcountry.
• 6:16
And as you know, we've got incredible and, and hundreds of miles, and 425 miles of Crested Butte single track alone.
• 6:24
There's about 750 miles of single track in the Gunnison County area, and we are looking to bring some backcountry fat bike single track to the high country, where it is just absolutely reminiscent of what Crested, or what Colorado in general has to offer.
• 6:40
So we've got permits in place that we're working on, and we're trying to bring about a, a couple of different venues, if you will, one of them being, again, a, a, a true backcountry single track experience, probably at 10,000 feet.
• 6:53
The next one we are hoping to do in town, which we're, which we're hoping to do or consider Fat Bike World, which would be a, a race that would be closer to the access of town and the amenities of town, and again, getting all the shenanigans and the good times that can happen in town in conjunction with that fat bike race.
• 7:11
And then we're also looking to do our final day of racing, and, and I would call this riding, not necessarily just racing.
• 7:16
There's gonna be some racers, but we're looking for the riders as well, um, up on Crested Butte Mountain Resort. So we're looking to tie in three different unique and iconic areas.
• 7:25
Um, we're working with different partners, the Nordic centers, the land trust, um, to be able to put these on and provide an amazing opportunity for all kinds of fat bike enthusiasts. Right on.
• 7:35
Hey, you know, speaking of partners, I just got a, uh, a press release from, uh, from Gary Shoquist at QBP. He's the advocacy director over there.
• 7:45
And instead of doing one global fat bike summit this year, they're gonna go ahead and have at least three that are already on the schedule, regional fat bike summits.
• 7:56
I think they can gather more information from the different areas and then kind of tailor stuff to that local, you know, kind of hotspot. One of them is happening at, on the Friday before your event in Crested Butte.
• 8:07
That's correct, and we're really excited about that.
• 8:09
Besides just bringing, you know, more fat bikers and more fat bike enthusiasts in the fat bike industry to our small little town during that weekend, we would love to include an educational, uh, piece to it.
• 8:20
So we're really glad to work with Gary. He's been incredible to work with so far, um, in, in every aspect of fat bike advocacy, fat bike access, and just getting some general knowledge from the industry, uh, from him.
• 8:32
But we're really glad to bring that to Crested Butte and to Fat Bike World Championships in the sense of trying to get some of the new and different, um, angles, if you will, to create more fat biking, especially in Colorado.
• 8:44
We definitely wanna limit, don't wanna limit it to just Colorado, but there's amazing, uh, interest and growth in the industry in Colorado, and we're glad to be hosting this to, again, help spread that education, let people know how to, how to work access with different user groups, Nordic centers, other landowners and stakeholders, what resorts are doing in Colorado.
• 9:05
And I don't know if you know about that, but I'm sure you do.
• 9:07
Durango's gonna be doing some downhill fat biking this year, and it'll be great to hopefully get a whole bunch of resorts in Colorado together in Crested Butte to discuss the future of fat biking, get the Forest Service, get the BLM, get the different land managers together, get the groomers, get the industry together, and talk about the future, how to do it, how to make it work.
• 9:27
Well, that sounds- Yeah... that sounds great. Right. Can I just, uh, can I just revisit the, the races?
• 9:33
Is the 10,000-foot elevation of the first race that you talked about, is that during Worlds, or is that a previous race? During World, we're calling... No. You know, we're, we're calling Fat Bike World a four-day event.
• 9:45
There's gonna be one race that we're gonna specifically consider Fat Bike World, but we do want to, um, uh, you know, ha- have events on all ends of the, of that weekend, if you will. Mm-hmm.
• 9:55
So there's gonna be some events before, um, Worlds itself. We'd like to do the conference. Also we wanna do an event on Thursday.
• 10:02
We'll do the conference on Friday, Fat Bike World itself on Saturday, and then a closing event on Sunday. Well, very good. Wow.
• 10:09
So in that, in that very serious, it sounds a very serious race, 10,000 feet backcountry race, are you going to invite,
• 10:18
uh, you know, like pro mountain bikers like Ned Overend and Dave Weens and, you know, those, those, those Colorado, uh, racers? Are, are you gonna have big names like that at that race?
• 10:31
You know, we hope so, and Weens is a very good friend and a neighbor, and we'd love, we'd be honored more than anything to have Dave Weens,
• 10:39
uh, present at any or all of these races, along with Ned Overend, Travis Brown, and even the, the Colorado Stallworths, if you will. But that race at 10,000 feet is, uh- Brad Bingham Oh, Brad Bingham, yeah...
• 10:49
might sound a little daunting, but it's, it's an incredible venue, and it's, it's, it's a magical, magical place. It does happen to be at 10,000 feet, but, um, that'll just be the precursor to the good stuff to come.
• 11:00
Well, if you want us to talk to a few people, you know. [laughs] Yeah, we got a lot of pull in the old fat bike industry. Yeah, just kidding. Um- [laughs] But let's, let's... You know, you probably have.
• 11:11
You said you're buds with Dave. Let's get him on the line right now. No, just- [laughs] No, just kidding again. He's sitting right next to me. Yeah.
• 11:18
[laughs] Uh, no, so, so the event then that, uh, that's, like, the 27th of January is when it's, that's kind of the Thursday before, correct? Yeah. Yeah.
• 11:27
So we're talking about, um, it's, uh, let me make sure I get the right dates. Yeah, 27th is a Wednesday in January. Oh, okay. We're gonna have a kickoff party that Wednesday night.
• 11:35
Thursday, we're looking to do that race up at the Lily, it's called Lily Lake, the Lily Lake area. Mm-hmm.
• 11:40
And, uh, we're gonna be grooming some specific fat bike single track through the woods, again, 10,000 feet next to this beautiful lake. I mean, it's incredible.
• 11:48
You're surrounded by a bunch of 12, 13,000-foot peaks, an incredible venue. Friday, we're looking to do the conference, and again, working with Gary Shoquist, getting the industry involved.
• 11:58
Saturday, we're looking to do Fat Bike World itself in town. At the end of Fat Bike World, we do want to brand the winner. Single Speed World does a tattoo.
• 12:06
We're actually looking to tie someone down, you know, almost cattle style, keeping it, you know, traditional with the Crested Butte and, uh, ranching roots out here and brand our winner.
• 12:15
[laughs] And then Sunday, we're gonna fly the fat bike- Dave, you are, you are a kinky man. That is just, that is, that is wild. Roping and, and, uh, and Brandon. He- I'm gonna wear my roper boots... yeah.
• 12:27
Here's, here's an idea I have sitting here thinking, listening to you, I'm thinking, "I'm gonna go to this," and you're gonna have an event at 10,000 feet.
• 12:35
Here's a nice tchotchke to give away, is they have these portable little oxygen breathers. [laughs] There you go. And AED device. [laughs] It always is nice to know that there's an AED around. Know what I mean?
• 12:51
We'll have those on site, for sure. Well, good.
• 12:54
And, uh, I bet you there's- [laughs] So, so since we kind of blathered all over about how this is gonna work, there's actually a link in the show notes if people wanna get more specific information about it.
• 13:04
Right, but it is, it is a work in process at this point, right, Dave? It is a work in process. We are, we have been working for the last three or four years for, uh, more fat bike access, if you will.
• 13:15
So obviously we are trying to get the best possible venues. Um, so it is a work in, uh, progress, if you will.
• 13:21
We're also working with several different, um, you know, uh, industry companies as well as trying to find that right beer sponsor, because I'll tell you this right up front too, every event is gonna have a party attached to it.
• 13:32
We're planning on music, we're planning on parties after every single one. We want this to be a true, you know, I, I, I said it earlier, a, a SOLE event, a grassroots event that we get our...
• 13:42
You know, it, it, it's about some of the hardcore racing. It's also about just coming out and having a good time, putting on a costume, getting silly, and just a, a whole bunch of fat bike love. Oh, yeah.
• 13:53
  Well, how, how about this?
• 13:54
Um, why don't we have you on right after the first of the year when everything's a little more nailed down and you're a couple of weeks away from the event, and we can just kind of revisit it, because- Absolutely...
• 14:04
I think this is gonna be one of the events of the year that people are gonna wanna be at. And oddly enough, you might get both Spen and Gomez at this one. Yeah, yeah. And, and- I hope, I hope we get both of you.
• 14:15
Crested Butte has so much history. The, the Pearl Pass rides, the Fat Tire Festival. Uh, and Colorado, they, they can throw down, so... And at altitude, so it's gonna be a great event.
• 14:31
Guaranteed snowy awesomeness. Right on. Y- you're probably definitely gonna leave a little dehydrated and maybe with a headache on Monday. That's part of the plan.
• 14:40
[laughs] But do check out, um, the Crested Butte, Mount Crested Butte Chamber of Commerce is where we are, uh, putting on this event out, based out of, and you can go to cbchamber.com.
• 14:50
We are gonna put up some early registration rates. Again, we're working on some of the details, but we wanna get folks in there. We've had a lot of interest, and the website's gonna be up and running pretty soon.
• 14:58
We'll keep populating that with more details and info as it goes, but it's up and kicking starting tomorrow. All right, man. Well, thanks for being on the show. Yep. Thanks for coming on. Sure great to talk to you.
• 15:10
Thank you boys for having me. Much appreciated. Very humbled to be here, and thank you so much. Um, I can't wait to see both of you out here riding bikes. Right on. Thanks, Dave. All right, man. We'll see ya.
• 15:19
Thanks again. We're gonna roll right along here into... Oh, no, we got Travis lurking in the background. Hey, Travis. What's up? [laughs] Not much, man. Got snow overnight. Yeah, I saw on the old, uh, interwebs.
• 15:34
So are you gonna be able to, uh, escape, uh, AK and come down to this Fat Bike Worlds thing? I think this is gonna be a good deal, good deal of fun. Oh, I think so. It sounds like a ton of fun.
• 15:44
I am, uh, looking at making an out of state escape this winter with the bike. But I gotta be honest, man, I kinda have my eyes more so on the Birkie. Well, that's, uh, got, hard to, uh, hard to- Oh, man. Yeah...
• 15:55
it's, it's like, how, how do you pick? I, it's easy for me to do the Birkie because it's six hours from here, so will definitely be at that one. Yeah. But, uh- I'm not gonna miss the Birkie this year. Nine.
• 16:05
We need you for photo coverage. [laughs] Yeah. Indeed. It's, it's too big an event for one guy to try and take pictures- Right... of that thing. True that. So, uh- I need a long lens, too.
• 16:12
Yeah, I'll give you a long lens. [laughs] Right. [laughs] All right, Travis, we got another call on the line. You wanna hang out? Sure. Hello, caller. Who do we have on the line? Hey. Gunny Rose here. Gunny Rose.
• 16:29
Hey, Gunny. How are you? Gunny Rose, Colorado. Yeah, man. Hey, hey. I'm kind of excited. Crested Butte, that is gonna be rocking. So how far away are you from the actual venue site? Oh, not far, right? Oh, like, man.
• 16:43
Four, three hours? Long ways, like, uh, 28 miles. Yeah. Oh, that's... [laughs] Okay. Yeah. [laughs] That's a lot closer than I thought. [laughs] So I guess I don't know my geography that well.
• 16:51
[laughs] I thought Crested Butte was, like, kind of in the middle of nowhere, actually, but maybe that's Big Sky, Montana. I don't know. Well, Gunnison is kinda like the less- No, that's up high.
• 17:00
That's up high, and we're down below here. Okay. We're in Gunnison. We're at the G spot of the county. So you're on the, you're on the Western Slope. Is that what they call it? We are. Okay. Right on.
• 17:10
I got a general idea where it is. [laughs] I think maybe every time I was there I was altered. Hmm. Rocking mountain. [laughs] So Gunny Rose, uh- You definitely come out?
• 17:23
Are you riding the s- You definitely come out for Crested Butte. It's a deal, 'cause it is beautiful up there. I've been mountain biking up there all summer, and it is just... Wow, it's beautiful. Yeah.
• 17:35
Yeah, I, I've been there once before. Oh, my God. I skied there way a long time ago. Where you- Never, never mountain biked there. Where you go through- Or a fat bike... aspen trees and it's just gorgeous.
• 17:49
The mountains in the background. So Gunny, did you, uh- I'm in-... did you happen to notice we had a question of the week? I forgot what it was. [laughs] What was it about riding a fixed bike, or?
• 18:00
Yeah, something like that. It's about, you know, in your winter riding, do you ride, uh, rigid or with a suspension? Well, I only have one bike, or one fat bike, a, uh, Salsa Mukluk. Mm-hmm. Right on.
• 18:16
And so, uh, and actually that's my wife's bike, but I ride it now, so it's all good. And that is, got a rigid fork on it, right? It does. All right. Absolutely. So that's one for rigid. 'Cause if you b- Yeah...
• 18:29
if you own, if you own a, a, if you buy a Muck Luck today, you could actually get one with, with, uh, Dr. Bluto on front. Yeah.
• 18:39
And it'll- It's got, uh- It'll ride just like a Black Barrel 'cause it's got the same geometry now. Oh. Well, then why do they have two different models? I don't know, but I rode a Black Barrel- I-...
• 18:49
in Washington, and that is a badass- I'm telling you-... geometry... remember that was my favorite one at Saddleback a w- while back. I, I totally remember you talking about that. Well, now you know why. Indeed.
• 18:59
[laughs] Well, I've been riding the heck out of it. You know, uh, three weeks ago I took my wife on a little road trip over to Slidell, just over in the mountains. Mm-hmm.
• 19:09
And we went to the Salsa dealer over there and she, and I was just riding this fat bike around. I said, "You ought to try this." She goes, "Oh, I love that color." And then she goes, "And you know, it's my birthday."
• 19:21
[laughs] Do you know what happens if you've been married long enough and they say it's their birthday and it is their birthday? Y- You're buying it. [laughs] So. So what, what color- So that's what happened...
• 19:31
what color did she fall in love with, the, like, garnet red one? Uh, red ruby. Yeah. Love it. Yeah, that, the- So. This year's, uh, this year's bikes are good. Oh, uh, we must have hit the top of the hill.
• 19:43
The boys are opening- [laughs]... beverages. Beverages. Hey, K- well, you guys can just ride on through. [laughs] We'll ride on by and set up and take a picture of you both sprawled out on the, on the second jump. What?
• 19:58
[laughs] Where's my supplemental oxygen? [laughs] Well, all right. All right, guys, keep on going. Hey, thanks for the coverage for Interbike. Good job. All right, man, thanks for calling in.
• 20:15
Keep up with the pictures, too. All right. You've been doing a good job with those. We'll get some more of those on the, on the website. Yeah. Thank you, appreciate your contributions. Thank you. Yeah, uh, bye, yeah.
• 20:23
Yeah, absolutely. That's cool. All right. Well. Well, we actually have a, we have an Anchorage story. We have Travis on the line. We have Travis on the line. [laughs] Isn't he from Anchorage?
• 20:34
Hey, Travis, did you happen to stop by the 907 Bike launch at Chain Reaction Cycles there? They had free beer, yo. No, I didn't even know where, I wasn't even aware that was occurring. He's a specialized guy.
• 20:49
Yeah, free beer. I would've been there, man. I know. But it's not your shop. [laughs] Right? I, but, you know, free beer, plus an 18 pound, 15 ounce- Yeah, I'd have to break down and just get on this Facebook thing.
• 21:00
Oh, there you go. That's how I knew. This is the Facebook. Well, and also 'cause world champion- Yeah... fat bike racer Will Ross was at this event. Right, indeed. He might call in- Well, maybe national champion.
• 21:11
Yeah, national champion. He has to go to Crested Butte to become- World-... world champion... champion. But what, which world championships? We only have two US national championships. And will they unify the belts?
• 21:22
[laughs] And where, and where's the Pan galactic- This is the last chance for all championships... championship?
• 21:25
I just want a picture of Will Ross with Ord, Neto, Wren, Ord, you know, the, whoever has all five of the belts. It'll be the small, skinny guys or what? All the small, skinny guys- [laughs]...
• 21:34
with these huge belt buckles on. That'd be kick-ass. That would be kick-ass. So yeah, Will Ross might call in later, so you know, we'll have that going for us. [laughs] Just loyalists. What else is going on up AK way?
• 21:49
Oh, man, I got, we actually got to see some snow falling from the sky last night. It was nice. It dumped hard and woke up to about four or five inches on, uh,
• 21:58
on, had to dust off the truck before heading to work this morning. But, uh, warmed up quick, so we're losing it, but it was pretty cool to see snow falling, man.
• 22:07
Did you get to see the, uh, super blood moon Sunday night or whenever that was? No, we were, uh, totally clouded over. Oh. Yeah, we just had- Oh, really? We lucked out here... cloud cover all week long.
• 22:20
Yeah, it came out right be- right from behind- Yeah, it broke... the clouds. Yeah, it broke. It was like, yeah, it was, like, ordained for us to see it. And I took the family up on the fourth floor- Oh...
• 22:28
of the fatbike.com studio building and we- [laughs] We're basically above every other building around us, so it was a, a great spot to watch it. Wow. Just- The boy wa- the boy was kinda tired on Monday. "What?
• 22:39
You made me stay up so late, Dad." [laughs] Just like an episode of, uh, Big Bang Theory. Weird. [laughs] Gomez. What is that? Gomez. Hello? Gomez. What is that? [laughs] Is that a ra- is that a radio drama?
• 22:56
That's a, that's a TV show. Oh. But, uh- What's this TV thing you keep talking about? [laughs] Hey, you can't out sit here 'cause you talk about your programs all the time.
• 23:05
[laughs] I watch my- I'm not talking, I'm not talking about them now. I'm talking about radio drama. [coughs] Oh my God. Choked me up. [laughs] So, uh, I have no idea where we're at here.
• 23:20
Yeah, we kinda mixed everything together, the big sauce we like to call Fat Bike Radio. You know what we should do, though? Probably take a quick break. You wanna take a quick break? Yeah, and we'll come back.
• 23:29
Let's take a quick break. We'll, we'll, we'll answer the, uh- Yeah, we'll, we'll just take a quick break. [laughs] We'll answer the burning question, what is next week's question?
• 23:36
And, uh- You're gonna love this one, guys... we'll talk some more to Travis, 'cause, uh, he's gonna hang out for a little bit. And, uh, we may even take a call from another caller. We'll be right back.
• 23:49
[upbeat music] [laughs] Hey, so listen up. This is your brain. La, la, la-la-la-la, sing a happy song. La, la, la-la-la-la, smirk the whole day long.
• 24:06
And this is your brain on plusbikes.com. [upbeat music] Any questions? You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.
• 24:23
[gentle music]All right. We're back from that thrilling break. Back in black. Thank you sponsors for all you do for us. And we have a, an additional caller on the line.
• 24:38
Right now we got Travis Lurkin, who's our new buddy. It's Will at 907. [laughs] What's up, Will? I, uh, a national fat bike champion, Will Ross. [exhales] I just tried to make you world champion- Yep...
• 24:51
before you've actually earned it, but, uh- But now you got a good course to bu- World champion Yep... start training and we gotta get you a hyperbolic chamber, uh, some oxygen tanks. What else? Yes.
• 25:01
Just like, uh, Michael Jackson. You got the lightest fricking bike that anybody could ever have. Have you ridden your new Team Whiteout yet? I have. I have ridden it. Ugh. It's pretty sweet. Is it sweet? Oh, dude.
• 25:13
It climbs real well. If I come up there, can I ride it? [laughs] It climbs real well, 'cause- [laughs] I think it climbs real well, 'cause Mr. Will Ross is the motor. [laughs] What? He didn't answer my question, though.
• 25:31
[laughs] Was your, was your- I don't know. I think there's... We only have a couple in existence right now, so we- [laughs]... we'll have to see. He's hedging. Yeah, really.
• 25:40
Like, would I have to put a security deposit down? [laughs] $100,000. Mm, maybe I'll ride it when there's, like, 100 of them. [laughs] Such a rare pony.
• 25:52
[laughs] I don't wanna break it, but I don't think I would break it. It would be fine. It would just be fricking unbelievably super light, and then I might be able to go- Oh, yeah. Super light... j- oh, that's awesome.
• 26:04
So you guys had a big launch party, and beyond the super light bike, which you guys posted 18.15 pounds, and it's really 18 pounds, 15 ounces, right? Yes. Yes.
• 26:15
'Cause, 'cause we don't wanna, we don't wanna, you know, mislead- You know, it, the, the whole American- Yeah... uh, i- the American system. I understand. Ounces, decimals. Right. I, yeah. It's 18 pounds- Oh, yeah...
• 26:27
15 ounces, which is super freaking light. But beyond that- Oh, yeah. Ridiculously light. [laughs] D- [laughs] Dick's unplugging. Sorry. [laughs] Uncle Dick just pulled out.
• 26:39
[laughs] [laughs] That's the end of our acoustic set. [laughs] Now we go electric. Yep. Uncle Dick's gonna head out to the local, uh, venue and do some, uh, some playing out there for the peoples.
• 26:53
So thanks again for stopping in there, Mr. Dick. Thank you, gentlemen. So back to Will. Will, you- Yes... also have new 80 millimeter and 100 millimeter carbon rims that you showed. Yeah.
• 27:09
We've got, we've got all sorts of new stuff this year. Uh, the new, the new Storm rim series, we've got our, our Storm 80 and our Storm 100. Um, the 80 is right at 600 grams, and the Storm 100, uh, is at 675 grams. Wow.
• 27:27
Are those made out of, like, the carpet fibers? Those are carpet fiber. Very shiny. Yeah, they're made out of those carbon fibers. Carpet, carbon fibers. Oh, that's way better than carpet fibers.
• 27:35
[laughs] Those things are kind of short. [laughs] Depends on the carpet. If you got shag carpet- Uh... you got long fibers. So yeah, single wall, tubeless ready. Uh, they're gonna be pretty sweet. Killer, man.
• 27:47
So, uh- Yeah... they set up tubeless nice and easy? Oh, yeah. Yeah, we've tried them tubeless with a bunch of different tires from a bunch of different companies, and every time works great. No, no burping, no leaking.
• 28:02
Yeah. They're awesome. When you're, uh, w- And, and they're stiff. Yeah, I bet. When, when you're out there racing- They're really solid...
• 28:08
Will, what kind of tire pressure do you typically run, or do you vary that from event to event? That's, that's definitely course to course. Gotcha.
• 28:16
Um, so like the Birke last year with the pretty soft conditions, I was, uh, yeah, I think, uh, like, seven and a half up front, and then, uh, like, eight and a quarter in the back. Mm-hmm. Um,
• 28:28
but then, yeah, like, our, our Frosty Bottom that we had up in Anchorage last year where it was just glazed ice the whole course, I think I was up to 12, 13 PSI. [laughs] So yeah, it's all, all course dependent. Sure.
• 28:42
Well, it's nice to know that the rims can, you know, hold the, the tubeless tires out at any tire pressure. Oh, yeah. So what kind of beer did you guys have at the, uh, at the soiree at...
• 28:52
This was at Chain Reaction there in Anchorage. Yeah. You know what? That's an excellent question. I was, uh, well, I was drinking, uh, Wild Cherry Pepsi, so, um- Atta boy... I don't know the, the beer on hand.
• 29:06
[laughs] So in this picture that we're- Something with hops and- We have type 2 diabetic Will Ross on the line- [laughs]... with his sugar water that he's drinking. That's healthy.
• 29:16
[laughs] There's nothing- Uh- There's nothing wrong with soda pop, man. I'm drinking a soda pop right now. Me too. It's called beer. Yeah.
• 29:23
[laughs] So in this picture that you sent us, you are, like, doing some kinda, like, wild jujitsu move or something. Oh, yeah. That was, that was, uh... I think I remember that conversation.
• 29:35
I think I was, uh, you know, like, when you're, when you're riding along and you, e- everyone in the pack takes their foot out in a corner. Uh-huh. It was one of those moves. Oh. Oh. It's a balance thing. Gotcha. Yeah.
• 29:47
And then there's that guy, like, right in- You guys all know that I look totally ridiculous, but- [laughs] No, it looks like you're mounting a, a unicycle maybe. It totally looks like you're doing, like, um- [laughs]...
• 29:56
"This is, I'm Billy Jack, and I'm gonna put this foot on that side of your head." And there's not a thing you can do about it. Yeah. Well- If you're, that's probably, like, a generational thing.
• 30:07
That's probably a little too- Right. Well, and the guy in front that looks like he's hanging from his ear, are you trying to weigh that guy with the, uh- [laughs]...
• 30:12
with the, with the, with the [laughs] it's, like, a, the bicycle, uh, uh, scale that you use to weigh the, the 18 pound 15 ounce wonder bike that you have.
• 30:21
But it's, yeah, but I'm sure they had him hanging- So this guy, what did he weigh? Did I say something, or did we hang someone from the scale? He's look, [laughs] he kinda looks like it.
• 30:27
It just is the way the picture is. Just the way the picture is.
• 30:29
The most fabulous thing about that picture, though- I was going back to the old Chainsaw Massacre days, but, uh, maybe not And it's, oh, it does look like he's hanging by his ears. [laughs] See?
• 30:40
But anyway- Or you're distracted- It looks like you guys-... trust you before it happens. Yeah, we've been scrutinizing the photo [laughs] quite closely apparently. [laughs] Looks like you guys had a good turnout.
• 30:49
Well, it was undoubtedly the most entertaining one. [laughs] Yeah, yeah. And with, and there's a ton of people there. Yeah. It, it was a pretty good showing. There were about, there were about 50 people.
• 30:58
Yeah, we just showed off the new bikes, like the new belt drive bike, uh, the new colors for our, uh, our new carbon white out bike. Right. Um- Yeah... yeah, no, probably 50 people there.
• 31:10
Um, yeah, we had a couple photographers show up. Yeah, my friend Joe Kaneshiro took some pictures, posted them on, on Facebook, and then our, our photographer John Lynn was there.
• 31:20
He posted a bunch of pictures to the 907 Bikes, uh, Facebook page. Cool. Yeah, I've been seeing some really- Yeah... nice photography of the new bike. Yeah, have him- Um-...
• 31:29
send us a couple for a Wallpaper Wednesday, 'cause, uh, you know, pros taking good shots. Everybody likes, uh, fat bike porn. Oh, yeah. [laughs] And then, uh, everybody'll know how sexy your bike is. Oh, yeah.
• 31:43
I'm too sexy for my bike. One- So-... one Facebook share at a time. [laughs] Indeed. Baby steps. Indeed. [laughs] We'll have, uh, you know, 10 people by noon.
• 31:55
But my real question here is, I'm babbling on, is- [laughs]... were there any, like, were there any Anchorage celebrities at your event, other than, of course- Anchorage celebrities. Yeah.
• 32:06
Are there any Anchorage celebrities? Were there any there? You know, like big names, like Travis, our, our guy that's- [laughs]... here in the background. He didn't show. He didn't know about it. He's our- So-...
• 32:17
our fat bike ambassador from Anchorage... right. Do you know Travis, Will? I, I don't know Travis. Dude, I think that- Yeah, we met, I, I met you once- Oh, have you?... Will, over at the shop. Oh, have you?
• 32:29
Yeah, I'll have to, I'll, I'll swing back in and officially introduce myself here soon. Oh, all right. Yeah. Well, yeah, forgive me. Yeah, Travis, you're gonna have to cross some of these, some of these [laughs] lines.
• 32:38
You're gonna have to not just be the specialized guy. He rides a specialized. It's okay, though. [laughs] They'll talk to you. They'll be nice to you until you challenge them to leg wrestle.
• 32:48
Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned. [laughs] The what? Until, well, or until- Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned. [laughs] No, no, no. Yeah. It's not a sin.
• 32:58
So what I'm saying is, everything will be fine until you line up to race them, or until you throw down the gauntlet for another leg wrestling invitational. Oh, man, that leg wrestling.
• 33:15
[laughs] That's- Ben and I never had that battle. [laughs] You know, I think that it would be like, you have to be, like, you and Jamie against Travis. Can that happen? Oh, yeah. Like three-way- Tag team... tag team.
• 33:30
Three's the winner? Tag team- [laughs]... tag team Indian leg wrestling. Tag team Indian leg wrestling. So- Hey, man, I got two legs. No problem. [laughs] There you go. That's the Alaskan spirit right there.
• 33:42
Well, thanks for calling in, man. I, I, I'm sorry I missed your party, but it looks like it was a good time. I would, uh, you know, love to, I would love to spend more time with, uh, with one of those bikes, for sure.
• 33:54
Oh, yeah? Yeah. Well, you're, you're coming up in, uh, Winnie coming up? We're think we're sending, we're think we're sending, sending Sven via FedEx up there. I mean- [laughs]...
• 34:05
you, you saw the movie, you saw the movie, uh, Cast Away, right? I believe. Yeah. So- Will Center, Spaulding, or whatever his name was. [laughs] Wilson. [laughs] Spaulding is- So we're just gonna-... Spaulding.
• 34:17
[laughs]... another one. [laughs] Well, the, the fat bike boxes are probably big enough. It's, it's maybe- We could do, like, downward-looking dog or something like that, and maybe- Yeah, it's a, it's a little thin.
• 34:26
We're gonna have to, we're gonna have to make something about the size of a refrigerator box, but, uh, uh- Yoga in everyone's future. [laughs] This is how we travel cheaply.
• 34:36
I can't just jump into the, the wheel well anymore. I [laughs] gotta go by box. [laughs] Maybe. All right, man. We'll figure something out, but I think it's gonna be Sven, 'cause I've, I've been lucky enough- Maybe...
• 34:50
to go the last two years. Yeah, I would love to go. I gotta make sure I can escape. You know where we really wanna go, Will? We wanna go to Scotland, 'cause we said we were gonna go- Oh... and then we didn't go.
• 35:00
Yeah, we're still gonna go there sooner or later. So that's- Oh, to the homeland? That's our, that's our goal for 2016. No, I was born in Gary, Indiana, [laughs] Will. Gary, Indiana. That's my homeland. Oh.
• 35:12
Your homeland. Oh, it's your homeland. All right. Oh, yeah. Well, that's- I've never been there, but- That's something to aspire to, then, going to that Scotland. Oh, yeah. I know.
• 35:20
You should really not be wearing pants, then, all these times that I've seen you. You should be wearing a kilt, man. I, I do own a kilt. All right. Very good.
• 35:28
You have, like, a, do you have, like, a dress tuxedo kilt that you're gonna be married in and stuff? It's a fan- uh, it's fancy. It's, I don't know if it's marriage material, but- Yeah...
• 35:37
yeah, I might have to make an appearance. Badass. Cool, man. Well, thanks for calling in. We're gonna take another call here, and, uh, keep this show just smoking right along. Right on. Thanks for having me.
• 35:49
All right, bud. Have a good one, Will. Yeah. See you. Mm. Bye. Hola. And welcome. Welcome to- How are you?... the radio program. Uh, it's pretty good. Who we talking to? Zito. Oh, Zito, [laughs] dude. Yo. I di-...
• 36:04
You know what? You're, you're, uh, you're only Zito on my... I never look at your number. Yeah. Yeah, I know. Right on. So how you doing? We- It's all right.
• 36:12
We actually were gonna give you some healing- You never, you ever see them bearing enough ladies bathrooms.
• 36:16
[laughs] We were gonna give you some healing vibes later in the show, because, uh, I know you hyper extended or something freaky on your leg.
• 36:25
And, uh, now that you're on the line- Yeah, I tore it up working on the course the other day. I'm, uh, got it up in the air right now, though. [laughs] That's what she said. Just one leg up All right, man. So, um, Mr.
• 36:39
Chris Zito is a, is a Milwaukee bud that is putting on a, an urban jungle cross series. Uh, he's done this, what, is this the third year? This is the third race of the second y- well, I'm sorry.
• 36:51
There was two races last year. Yeah. I plan on doing th- this one this weekend and another one Thanksgiving weekend, uh, most likely the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. Right on.
• 37:01
And the cool thing about- This will be the third and fourth... Okay. Yeah, the cool thing about Zito's, uh, cross races is they're, they're in an urban jungle area and it's really a cool place to be.
• 37:12
It's super photogenic, and you run, uh, you run three different classes, is that right? Three different classes, that's right. BMX, fat bike and of course cross.
• 37:22
Uh, this course that we got going now is definitely gonna be a cross bike course. [laughs] Unless someone has some really sick fat bike skills.
• 37:31
There's a number of dismounts and, and up and over and a down and through, and, uh, the, the usual, you know, razor wire and bricks and, and common things you run into in the urban jungle.
• 37:44
Yeah, mattresses and tires and all sorts of- Mattresses, tires, broken glass. Although we try to avoid the broken glass. Yeah, just, it's, it's a fun area to be in.
• 37:54
It used to be- Rainbow t-shirts and- This, the, the area we're talking about used to be a coke plant and we k- [laughs] we kinda talked about this before the show. A coke refinery, not Coca-Cola. Right.
• 38:02
Yeah, right, not a Coca-Cola the drink, but a, a make steel coke plant and it was a, a large area in, in the middle of Milwaukee, which is still pretty much uninhabitable, [laughs] so we get to go, uh, play bike on it.
• 38:16
Yeah. Oh, it's- Yeah, it's technically on the edge of Milwaukee. Right. Um, the, the- We were trying to f- we're trying to figure out what it's actually called...
• 38:23
it's right here in the middle of- 'Cause that's not Bay View. I, uh, someone- It's not Fifth Ward maybe. Huh? Someone...
• 38:28
It would be, it would be the point of Walker's Point, but it has a name and I can't recall what it is. Someone brought it up to me the other day and I can't remember what they told me it's called. It's Jones Island.
• 38:39
Something Field. Well, pardon me? Oh, it's not Jones Island, 'cause that's even a little further east, so. No, Jones Island is, is Jones Island. Right. This is, uh, it's actually the point of Walker's Point.
• 38:49
It's, you know, south of Greenfield and Greenfield Avenue on one side, railroad tracks on the other and, uh, the KK and Menominee, it's where the KK and Menominee Rivers meet actually.
• 39:00
Yeah, it sounds like it, it's such a prime chunk of land. I'm just glad [laughs] we get to go play down there.
• 39:05
Just we, I'm sure we only have, don't have much longer before someone comes up and puts condos up there and, and, uh, we get more yuppies around there. Yep. Well, being a super fun site- [laughs] Yuppies...
• 39:14
somebody's gonna need to get some money from somewhere. Yeah. Definitely needs to be cleaned up and it's, I'm sure it's contaminated. Uh, it's safe for us.
• 39:23
I've been to hanging out down there for a couple years and haven't, uh, got any extreme rashes or hair falling out or anything.
• 39:30
There's a spot just almost, like maybe 50 or 100 feet south of the, of the rave location in the old, uh- Yeah... in the building with, you know, all the tires in it, and it's like a hollow- Right...
• 39:41
tank underground and I'm like, "What's up in that tank? Are there sharks down in there?" Yeah. I'm sure there was some kind of fun, some fun iron ore chemical crap shit in there.
• 39:52
[laughs] Well, we look forward to coming down there. I come by. I'm sure it's dry now. Yeah.
• 39:58
It's, it's pretty dry once [laughs] it's- Now it's probably a home for the homeless guy that stole my, uh, w- weed whip and my, uh, shovel. Oh. [laughs] Oh.
• 40:06
The, he's the guy that lives in the rubble, though, with the little, the little cover over- Uh-huh... by the roof area. Yeah, yeah.
• 40:13
[laughs] No, I saw a rave in that tire building one morning at, like four in the morning coming home from work. I was cutting through there. There had to be 150, 200 kids there with lights and music and...
• 40:24
Oh, you were there with me the next day. Yeah, and you know what's funny? There's not one Whippet container left in front of that building.
• 40:30
[laughs] I don't know where they all went, but there had to be, like- I've called the wrappers... there had to be, like 300 or 500 Whippet containers down there.
• 40:36
[laughs] I'm not sure what they do with that, but there was a lot of water and Whippet. Yeah. Well, the, the Whippet containers, I think they use them to get high. [laughs] Wow. The wrappers take- [laughs]
• 40:49
I think, I think the staff would make them smoke it. Well, well, greetings star gazers. Star gazers. [laughs] I had no idea. I thought they were just making carbonated water with them. Oh, yeah.
• 41:00
I thought they were making whipped cream and stuff. [laughs] We'll have whipped cream stories next week on Fat Bike Radio. So yeah, it's a fun race. I mean, it's fun for the whole family. It's a cool place to hang out.
• 41:10
It's a great place for photographers.
• 41:12
This year's course or this, this round's course is, uh, through a lot of cool little areas, a lot of photogenic areas, a lot of urban, uh, painting, a lot of graffiti and, uh, different kind of old building parts and pieces and broken concrete and of course bricks like last year and, uh, it's, it's good fun.
• 41:34
Uh, last year we had, like a four year old and a five year old running it with their parents and boys and girls, people who've never raced a race before, some pro cross racers. We got a few pros coming in.
• 41:46
My friend Heidi Beck from Delafield claims that she's coming in and bringing some friends. Hopefully, uh, Travis that, that won the men's last time will show up from Madison.
• 41:57
Pat Ziegel and Pete Geigel hopefully will show up and, uh, we should get some ringers in here. Ringer. [laughs] It's fun, though. It's fun for everybody.
• 42:06
I mean, there's a kid who works for Breakaway that didn't even own a bike that borrowed one and, and, and from Coast N Bikes and did the race, so.
• 42:13
Yeah, there was a couple girls on the first one that had- It's fun for everybody... well, had rented or borrowed bikes from Coast N too that did a, did a nice job, some messenger types. Yeah.
• 42:23
And this year we are f- our, our only sponsor thus far this year is, uh, Great Lakes Distillery has donated a couple bottles of whiskey for the top of Rehorse Rise, so you can have a shot after you do the hill climb, and, uh, we'll have some beer on hand for some beer handups and- Just some good old-fashioned fun on a Sunday afternoon Sounds good, man.
• 42:44
We're, we're... JK and I'll be there for sure. Oh, yeah. Most def. All right. Gomez? Hi. I, I always thought you were from Australia. [laughs] No, I wish I was. I wish- Sven said you're from Milwaukee...
• 42:59
I feel that way every day, though. What's that? I always thought you were from Minneapolis too.
• 43:05
No, I was fr- I'm born and raised in Milwaukee, but I was fortunate enough to cut my teeth in the cycling world up in Minneapolis after a stint of messenger-ing here and a little stint there. I got to hang out with
• 43:17
the crew from QBP and Surly and the Wednesday night ride and Gene at One on One and Earl from Cars or Coffins and a whole, whole plethora of bike industry people that just pretty much kick ass. They, they- So-...
• 43:31
remembered you fondly when we talked of your name- [laughs]... down at Interbike, by the way. We ran into Hurl. Oh, yeah. Yeah, we ran into Hurl and- The ones from QBP? Oh, yeah. We, we- Oh, yeah.
• 43:40
[laughs] We ran into Hurl and Sav and, uh- SoZito... Cheever and, and all the crew. When, when you, when you and I are in the old folks' home in our mobility scooters next to one another, uh, when you think back,
• 43:56
when will have been the good old days, Minneapolis or Australia? Oh my God, I'd have to say, um, Australia was just a, a, a great experience.
• 44:10
You know, I got to spend two years and meet some super world-class people and see a beautiful country, and, uh, uh, but I think that was more of a, a life experience where Minneapolis really, in my opinion, has the best cycle culture in our country, in any city I've been in.
• 44:27
When shit happens there, the roadies show up, the commuters show up, the messengers show up, the BMX kids show up. Their, their cycling community is really tight.
• 44:38
The weather sucks, but they still have a ton of people that commute all year round, and, uh, it's, it's just really a phenomenal city.
• 44:46
There's some great events that go on there, the Homie Fall Fest and, uh, the Wednesday night rides used to go on.
• 44:53
I d- from what I understand it's kind of dead, but it was a great, great event that started every N- Wednesday night at 10:00 o'clock and, uh, usually ended sometime, I don't know, well after bar close. Mm-hmm. Yeah.
• 45:06
Well, there's definitely a- Quite often-... definitely a culture of that... quite often with a fire in the woods and some skinny-dipping. [laughs] Wow. Cool, man. Well, thanks for calling in.
• 45:15
Uh, October 4th is the, the event this Sunday. What time does it start? Uh, registration starts at 10:00, from 10:00 to 12:00 on the corner of Orchard and, oh- Barclay? What's the other one? Is it Ba- Yeah...
• 45:31
Barclay, I think. Yep. Barclay. Barclay. Barclay Street, South Barclay and East Orchard. Uh, it's right behind the U-Haul on First Street here in Milwaukee. [laughs] You can find it.
• 45:43
Uh, we're meeting at the house on the corner. There's a big yard. You can't miss it. Yeah.
• 45:46
We'll have some bikes laying around and some people drinking beer and we'll have some donuts before the start, and then, uh, at noon we'll do a quick lap and show everybody the course, and then about 12:30, 12:45, we'll get the race going.
• 45:59
Race for an hour. Whoever does the most laps wins, each category, male and female. And, uh- Party afterwards?... we'll be done in time to watch the Green Bay Packers.
• 46:12
So, uh, am I safe to say that a USA Cycling license is not required to enter your, uh, your competition? No, what is required is 10 bucks.
• 46:21
[laughs] Because we are raising money for the North American Cycle Courier Championships in Milwaukee in 2017. Ah, the NACC.
• 46:31
So it went from 5 bucks to 10 bucks, but after we recover costs and pay out what we've paid to put into it, we will give the rest of it to, um, the Milwaukee Courier Association, who is hosting, like I said, the North American Championships here in 2017.
• 46:48
There you go. So is your knee all leaking down into your ankle? What's going on with your foot, dude? Yeah. I w- I was actually on the course- [laughs]...
• 46:57
with John Trusky on Friday, and we were looking at one of the, the hurdles, and he said, "Well, we gotta move that PVC from the other side. Someone's gonna twist an ankle."
• 47:07
[laughs] So I stepped over it and hyper-extended my knee on it. Oh, man. And, uh, yeah, my ankle's just swollen with drainage from the back of my leg from the- Drainage, Daniel... thicker vein or something.
• 47:19
I drink your- So are you s- can you still sling drinks and, and make sweet love to the ladies? I've, I've been slinging drinks the last couple days- [laughs]...
• 47:26
although my foot is probably the size of a grapefruit right now. Oh, Lordy. And, uh, I'm taking a couple days off here to, uh, finish up on the course and, uh, rest my, my leg so I'm good to go on Sunday.
• 47:40
Like I said, it's gonna be a cyclocross, definitely a cyclocross bike-dominant race. Uh, don't bring your bars too wide, 'cause there's some tight spots. [laughs] All right, man.
• 47:53
But, uh, if you got skills, you'll get through. Cool, dude. Well, we'll see you probably Saturday, get a little more course prep in and look forward to it.
• 48:00
Yep, uh, corner of Orchard and Barclay, 10:00 o'clock till 12:00 o'clock is registration. All right. Well, call us anytime, man. We're gonna roll through the rest of this show here. Heal up fast. Right on. Feel better.
• 48:12
Thanks for having me on. Yeah, thanks for calling in. And, uh, keep on kicking some ass, rubber side down. All right, laters. Cheers. Later, bro.
• 48:23
Crazito man from Milwaukee telling us about the Urban Jungle Cross Series race, uh, first one of the year there, October 4th, 2015 in the Urban Jungle. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.
• 48:42
All right. You know what we didn't get to before? I have no idea where the fuck we are. Did we even get to what next week's call-in question is? No, no. We were taking call-ins so much.
• 48:51
[laughs] I don't know what- No, we didn't do the-... next week's call-in question is. Like, oh, yeah, the quick break. Ah, and we're back, JK, what is this week's question?
• 48:59
Okay, could you tell us what next week's call-in question is, please? [laughs] We got, like, six minutes to wrap this up. Oh, gotcha. Let's go. Oh, all right. Not really. Shit. Actually, there's no pressure, JK. No.
• 49:12
So climb down from that stepladder. [whimpers] You okay? Everything's gonna be fine. [laughs] Just gotta get myself together. Next week's call-in question is, ask Sven and Gomez anything. Anything.
• 49:28
Their favorite Sesame Street character, where do you go in the grocery store? First aisle, first thought. Was that you that was walking into that bar? Anything. Okay. So call in next week.
• 49:43
I'm gonna be on vacation next week. From AP. [laughs] It's a free-for-all next week. Ask us anything. Yeah. Well, even, you can even make it about fat bikes if you want. So you can probably call, uh- Or-...
• 49:53
818-918-2453 and, and, and ask us a question. I know a lot about gnome husbandry. It's kind of a hobby. Hmm. Bye. Hey, you know what time it is. [laughs] Cracky.
• 50:05
It's time for this week's Fatty Farm Field Report with JK Livin as JK Livin. This week's Fatty Farm Field Report is sponsored by the now, uh, absent Uncle Dick and his bead slip.
• 50:20
But wasn't he rocking those, like, chords and stuff? He was doing some kind of old Zeppelin-y slide-y thing that was Robert Johnson inspired, which, I don't know. Yeah. Sounded good to me.
• 50:30
He brought the slide with him today, and he was- Yep, had it all up on his finger. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. You can, uh, check more about that at, uh, uncledicksbikeshop.com. Maybe he'll put up a video- Maybe...
• 50:40
playing the guitar. So we have a little bit of serious news here on the old [laughs] travesty of a show. It is- [laughs]... our version of the public service announcement. Calaca. Without, without guitars.
• 50:55
[laughs] Without guitars. Calaca. No, serious- And without Calaca. [laughs] Right. It's a serious thing.
• 51:01
I mean, there, there was a recall of over a million and a half bikes from 17 different companies that have an issue with the front quick release skewer, and I think it's something people ought to check out.
• 51:12
This covers bikes from 1998 to, I think, like, now. It's really pretty broad- Right... depending on which skewer they used. I know some Shimano skewers are involved in this.
• 51:22
And, uh, there's a couple links in the show notes.
• 51:24
One is to the breaking news over there at Bicycle Retailer, and the other one is a simple poster that shows you how to test your quick release skewer, make sure it works properly. This is not just a fat bike thing.
• 51:37
This was bikes from Trek and Jamis and a lot of the big names in cycling and, and all through their product line, depending on how they spec them. So check it out. Get to your local bike shop.
• 51:48
They'll give you a replacement skewer if indeed you are part of this reclamation, recall, reforestation- Thing... thing, procedure that they're doing. 1.5 million bikes. That hurts me. Million.
• 52:01
17 different brands- Yeah... dudes. Yeah. That's, it's a big one. Check, check your QR. Look at this little video that's on these links and figure it out.
• 52:10
I mean, I thought, "Oh, I don't have any of these brands," but then I looked at the quick release, and now, now I gotta go look. So join me. It's an adventure in quick release reformation.
• 52:23
Hey, you wanna revisit last week? The whole show or just the question of the week? [laughs] I know. I was just waiting for a moment. [laughs] I can't stop talking. [laughs] Hey.
• 52:40
Let's revisit last week's question and talk about the results. Now he wants to get back on script. [laughs] I don't know what you're talking about. [laughs] Which was, what was your favorite
• 52:53
fat bike item from coverage of this [laughs] year's bike extravaganza? He's cracking himself up. Oh, shoot. He's, he's trying. I am doing nothing over here. He's actually trying.
• 53:05
[laughs] Anyway, so the, the last week's question was- This, this was the three nipple thing, right? Right. In- indeed. I- [laughs]... don't remember my answers.
• 53:15
I remember one of them, Skookum, 'cause it was- Yeah, Skookum was your number one. Yep. There was other things. We had time to think about it. Yeah.
• 53:23
I'm gonna keep with mine, which was Skookum and Tom Ritchie with the Santana tandem and, what was my other one? Well, you did a person thing. Right. So you kinda tied all the people to the deal. That was pretty good.
• 53:35
[coughs] But I would, I would add a, like, a special, a special category. What would it be? A, uh, what, what do they call it? Fourth nipple. A fourth nipple, indeed. Gotta have a litter.
• 53:51
Uh, that $299 Charge Cooker kids 20-inch fatty, dude. Oh, yeah. That, that- I remember at the show we're like, "Bazinga," because- Every kid will have, should have one of those, you know?
• 54:04
That, that's like a regular price for a good bike. And it's only a couple bucks more than a piece of crap. I know. I know. It's a good deal. So, you know, the Maxxis Minion, what's up with that tire?
• 54:16
[laughs] We put that tire up as a picture on the old cover of our Facebook. Proto versus production. [laughs] Yeah, so we have a, we have a real proto tire, and it- it's actually stamped that it's a prototype.
• 54:31
So we don't really know where this tire is in the development process of this product, so, you know, product development. It's, it's, it's a job title. It's somebody's job to make this tire and then-...
• 54:46
develop it [laughs] into a better product that actually goes to market. It's the, uh, development. It's the D in our research and [laughs] development, R&D. Yeah, R&D. Yeah. From who's the hell?
• 55:00
So we don't know where our prototypes are in that process, so that's why we- They're at, they're, they're in the prototype phase. [laughs] That's pretty obvious. Right. It says right on the tire. I- indeed.
• 55:11
So that's why we have all of the hedging and saying, "Well, we don't really know if it's gonna be exactly like... It might be different- Well... might be the same." And we really, the, I mean, I don't wanna, it...
• 55:23
They said, they said, like, March that these tires- Yeah... would be ready. Well, they take feedback on these prototypes from wonderful testers like our crew at fatbike.com- There you go...
• 55:33
and they integrate it into the product design. Yeah. So, you know, simmer down. It's gonna be fine. It's just a picture on the internet, you know? It's also a real tire on the back of my car, on the back of my car.
• 55:47
[laughs] That's my car. On the back of my, on the back of my fat bike, but, you know, we don't know what it sure will look like. It's a similar kinda tire. Well, very good. Yeah.
• 55:58
So we've got some, uh, some great news for women in our cycling industry. Indeed. Wanna tell 'em a little bit about it?
• 56:07
QBP along with SRAM, RockShox, Park Tool, Surly, and U- the United Bicycle Institute, UBI- UBI, football rules.
• 56:16
[laughs] Are offering 16 scholarships for an all-women's class of professional repair and shop opera- operations at UBI. That's a mouthful. I know. Wow.
• 56:28
The scholarship was created with the recognition that the bike industry needs to reach out to more women and serve them more effectively.
• 56:35
It's dedicated to getting more women on bikes while supporting the development of women mechanics. In its first two years of operation, over 1,200 applications were received.
• 56:46
The scholarship opportunity is aimed at women who are aspiring or experienced bike mechanics, as well as those looking to increase their technical knowledge to further their career in the cycling industry.
• 56:57
Recipients will receive a full tuition scholarship to attend UBI's Professional Shop Repair and Operations workshop. Are you a woman? Are you interested in applying to this unique opportunity?
• 57:11
You can go to qbp.com/womensscholarship. Applications will be accepted from October 1st through October 31st, and win- winners will be announced on January 8th, 2016.
• 57:26
We'll have a link in the show notes for you to click on, so if you're a lady that works in a bike shop, you should, uh- It's a, it's an, it's, they pay the tuition. That's, like, a $2,500 program.
• 57:38
And they- It's, it's not cheap... they put you up in a hotel in, uh- Portland, Oregon-... in Portland... or Ashland, depends on which campus they're at. It, it's- They actually have two now...
• 57:45
it's the Oregon, uh, campus They're both in Oregon. Oh, sorry. [laughs] But Portland. Okay. Maybe. Um, yeah, they give you, they give you a meal stipend, and I mean, it's like, it, it, you, you Miss America.
• 57:57
You're, you're Rosie the Riveter. You're, you're in the bike business. Right on. Yeah.
• 58:02
Hey, we talked a little bit while we were talking with Dave about a change kinda to the global Fat Bike Day thing that QBP's been doing for a while, and now it's the
• 58:12
regional fat bike thing where they get to do this three times instead of just once, and we know one of them now is in Crested Butte on the 28th of January. But just wanted to note that there's two other ones.
• 58:22
There's one in conjunction with the 906 Polar Roll fat bike race in Marquette, Michigan. That's on the 19th.
• 58:28
I think the race is on the 20th, and then there's a, they're k- a third day of shuttle rides on the 21st, s- and the third one will be out in the, uh, Ogden area there for, um, the USA Cycling Fat Bike Nationals.
• 58:44
That's the Friday before on the 26th. The nationals are on the 27th. I don't know.
• 58:49
I don't see anything planned on the 28th when there would be, you know, other riding and fun things going on, but maybe they got something going on. Both the other events have a, like, a, a window on either side.
• 59:00
Oh, is, is Mark Peterson's, uh, event in conjunction with the nationals out there? Maybe. We should get Mark Peterson on the show. Yeah, we should. 'Cause I think we should talk to our buddy, Mark. Indeed.
• 59:12
Aren't we, like, sponsors to that? I think I read that- Mm... on the interwebs. Maybe. Maybe.
• 59:17
So one last little gem here before we move into the stinky links, I talked to Brent at Twin Six, and he told me that, uh, they got their shipment of standard fats coming in this week.
• 59:30
So that should mean that they have- That's the titanium bike that- Yeah... uh, Jesse Lalonde did. Right.
• 59:35
So they should have a full size run in stock next week, ready to go, ready to ship out the door, and, uh, they felt like they had that bike so dialed on, uh, V1.0 that they, they didn't make any changes, and, uh, they just got another batch coming in.
• 59:51
So at first, I tried to get Jesse Lalonde on the phone, but he was out hunting wolverines with his bare hand, or maybe a spoon, I don't know.
• 1:00:00
Uh, but one other thing here that I learned while I talked to, um, Brent is that they have a new website up there for Twin Six. Website 2.0. Yeah. Perfect.
• 1:00:11
And I had to, I, I went up, I clicked on stuff, and I bought some Cars or Coffins water bottles, and you can do the same thing. You should check it out at twinsix.com. Right on.
• 1:00:24
Well, let's, uh, bounce into links real quick here and, uh- Ba-boom. Ba-zing. Uh, we got, we got our little collection or, or ranks here. Hey, we've, we're doing something a little different.
• 1:00:34
We're putting videos in our, uh, links. There's- Again, maybe. [laughs] Maybe. Again, maybe. [laughs] We have, uh, Jeff Price wiping out. He actually hydroplanes this bike, and that's why he crashes. Sweet.
• 1:00:47
Like, he hits, hits the water so fast that the front tire just, you can just see it raise and then, wow, sideways. Hydroplaning is the way to go. Yeah Not Hydroplaning and then complaining. Ugh.
• 1:01:00
No, it's using, it's summoning the natural energy of the wave itself. Indeed. Yeah. All right, Bodhi. Make the wave, Bodhi. Yeah, man. Bodhi. So all of Lest The Great Swedish Playboys, the My Life in Swedish Lapland
• 1:01:19
rockstar. Yeah. Yeah, he just took a... It just, a, a thing that, you know,
• 1:01:23
a lot of times we don't, well, we think about it, but maybe some other people don't, is just kind of taking a break in the middle of the day and finding something that's close by and going and enjoying it when you're just, uh, looking for a little relaxation.
• 1:01:35
Indeed. It's bike life in Swedish Lapland. Yeah, man. The Tiny Escape. I like the title even. So, uh, our buds over at Cycle Monkeys just, uh, introduced, uh, complete build versions of their Ventana El Gordo.
• 1:01:52
They've been kind of- Hi, Neil. Hi, Neil. [laughs] They've been kind of like custom things for, uh, about a year, but this is a real price on it. These are the parts on it.
• 1:02:04
Two different build groups with the roll-off as being the linchpin of, of the El Gordo frame. And that, that El Gordo, I, I rode, I tested one of those bikes. That's a badass bike. You betcha.
• 1:02:16
Uh, Salsa played around in the north woods of Wisconsin. Unfortunately, it was right before Interbike or I, I got invited up there and I'd had to say, "I'm gonna be going to Interbike. I'm sorry."
• 1:02:28
But, uh, there was fat biking and all sorts of stuff. They have a story on their blog. I think it's probably worth checking out. Cool. And now we're, uh, we've moved into the plus-sized links. We got The Coastkid.
• 1:02:43
He's got an ECR. He's been riding that a lot. Oh, yeah? Been riding his Surly 29 plus ECR. ECR, ECR, ECR. You can read all about it in his show notes.
• 1:02:54
Bruce said he's gonna work on a, uh, a beach preparation, saltwater preparation, little, uh, tips for us. That's a great idea. He did one many, many moons ago when he was still riding a, uh, internally geared Shimano
• 1:03:09
hub of some i- He said he's gonna brush that up and, uh, update it, and then we're going to, uh, we're gonna disseminate that information for all the other coastal riders out there. That's a good thing.
• 1:03:20
Uh, I know that, uh, our buddy, Wade, out there in Washington swears by WD-40 as the after treatment. Hmm. It always makes me bristle. Not a lubri- [laughs] I, I just- Yeah...
• 1:03:33
don't want WD-40 anywhere near any of my bikes. I w- I don't know... I'm telling you that that's- I don't know... that's what he says for getting all that crap off.
• 1:03:40
And the other thing that- It's good for removing stickers too, actually. Yeah. [laughs] But I, I mean, just in general. I- Just the, the proximity factor. What a- what about Boeshield?
• 1:03:49
Are you gonna bitch about that, too? No. That was made- That's why I'm bitching about the... [laughs] Ah, ah. Duh, duh, duh. [laughs] Gramony, do you two need a moment in time out maybe? [laughs] I don't know.
• 1:04:04
You hit a hot button. WD-40. He's like, "No, not near my bike. No, no."
• 1:04:09
But here's, here's the thing that I learned from Wade, the WD-40 guy, is that even when you ride just on the sand, dry sand, never get the bike wet, all of that sand has been soaked in seawater, so it's coated in
• 1:04:25
salt molecules. Molecules. And those molecules go on your chain molecules, and then you know what you got? Science 101. [laughs] Science. [laughs] Du, du, du, du, du. Science.
• 1:04:43
So- Neil Young wrote a little song about it. It's called Rust Never Sleeps. 10-4. Mm-hmm. Well, those guys live on the coast, so I guess I give them props on knowing what works and what doesn't.
• 1:04:53
[laughs] And even though Wade and Bruce live on [laughs] almost complete opposite sides of the world, they're buds. 10-4. That's the, the love of the fat bike world. Indeed.
• 1:05:03
Speaking of love of fat bike world, Travis is our longest listening listener ever in the history [laughs] of listening on our show just now. Just, thanks, Travis. Awesome. You got any closing comments?
• 1:05:17
My pleasure, gentlemen. Uh, yeah, I was gonna ask you guys, uh, don't you guys have an Oregon trip planned? Yeah, I, I went to- Like that time past... I, I went to Washington for three days after Interbike,
• 1:05:31
and I am, uh, I am postulating, I am formulating, I am, I am, I am working on my story. I am- Flatulating. [laughs] I am
• 1:05:47
talking to myself in different voices. So yeah, I'm, I'm writing a story about it. It was really good time. I mean, it's like, it was like, you know, going home. It, people of like minds, and it was just so good.
• 1:06:01
Beautiful, peaceful, awesomeness, even though the weather was weather, you know? Yeah, the weather outside is bad. You get weather outside. [laughs] Yeah. You know, weather happens.
• 1:06:13
So there, there's a way that, you know, the lower 48 is, is, uh, we're with you up there in Alaska, except for 40 below. We don't, we don't get that. Lucky you. [laughs] I was out once when it was 25 below.
• 1:06:31
It was like time was slowed down. [laughs] It was like, uh, yeah, it was weird. I w- I would think, uh, surprised nobody called in from Fairbanks tonight to at least tell a story about packing trails.
• 1:06:47
They just got walloped with, uh, 15 to 20 inches of snow in the last couple days. Yeah, I've been, uh, I've been trading some emails with Kevin Breitenbach today about test gear and whatnot, so-
• 1:07:00
He had some beautiful pictures of, uh, of lots of snow, like 14 inches or something like crazy like that. Yeah, and Jordy Blackson, man- Yeah...
• 1:07:10
he, uh, he had some pictures up of him riding around Anchorage with the five inches of wet snow that you guys got, so. Yeah, I think I'm gonna have to j- get up early and get out before work, uh, take a ride tomorrow.
• 1:07:23
It's supposed to drop cold tonight, so yeah, this snow we got now is gonna go away, but, you know, uh, we got a little, a cool evening coming. Might be a good morning for my first crunchy snow ride. Yeah.
• 1:07:35
But, uh, I actually, uh, the question of the week, I'm really curious on this, particularly asking you guys personally, uh, for your winter rides, the, uh, the shocks or the stiffies.
• 1:07:48
[laughs] Well, I, uh, was riding- 'Cause I'm looking at buying a Bluto soon. [laughs] Yeah, I'm not 100% sure about the Bluto yet, 'cause I didn't ride that in the winter yet. I was riding last year one of the- Yeah...
• 1:08:02
um, Brad Bingham customized Marzocchi, uh, Bomber forks that he built the wider crown and the wider bridge for. That there's like only three of. Yeah, there's not very many of them.
• 1:08:14
[laughs] And I really liked how- You don't want that one. [laughs] I liked how it worked, uh, for sure. Um,
• 1:08:19
I think it depended a lot on the type of trail you're on, and it goes back to the thing where how many fat bikes do you need, one with a suspension fork and one without at least, so that you can get something for the conditions.
• 1:08:31
And, uh, that fork's able to run a five-inch tire, which is pretty sweet, but it's also something not many people have. So this year I've got a Bluto on one of my bikes, and I will,
• 1:08:41
that's the first year I'll be riding it. Yeah, I, I... If I'm testing a bike that comes with the Bluto, I don't think I would take it off in the wintertime. I would try and break it, or I would try and get it to fail.
• 1:08:54
If it was 25 below out, I would be like, "I gotta go riding 'cause I have to make this thing not work." [laughs] Right?
• 1:09:00
But and it would probably work, 'cause, you know, things have gotten better, 'cause we're a little bit further down the development trail. [laughs] Yeah. You know, I- On that, on that item, right?
• 1:09:11
We, we did learn something at, uh, Interbike this year, that they've kind of addressed the seal problem on V2 of the, of the Bluto, and so we'll see. Yeah.
• 1:09:22
And but, but on my own bike, I ride a rigid fork summer or winter, although I'm not against now riding one in summer. I've, I've... On the Watchman that I'm also writing a review on right now, it's saved my ass.
• 1:09:37
Yeah, that's a lot of riding. Yeah. You know, we had a couple of, uh, we had a couple of call in to the Fat Bike Radio voicemail line answering this week's question, too.
• 1:09:47
We'll take a listen to a couple of those, and then I think we gotta get out of here. Yeah, this is a long show, man. I'm getting overtime. [laughs] Hi, this is Capitán from Rincon Mountain Bike.
• 1:10:02
Um, the question of the week is, should you ride on the snow on a rigid or suspension fork? Well, I say suspension, 'cause you don't know what's underneath the snow. Talk to you guys later. Beep.
• 1:10:16
Hey, guys, Keith from Central Oregon. And for the question of the week, I do ride suspension for snow riding in the winter. Thanks a lot. You guys have a great day.
• 1:10:29
All right, thanks, guys, for your, uh, for answering the question. You know, you guys, you can call in and leave a voicemail anytime, just like these fellas did. And, uh, with that,
• 1:10:40
thanks again to Surly for sponsoring the radio portion of today's broadcast. Yeah, guys.
• 1:10:45
Uh, I'm just wanna put a little screeching halt on here, 'cause we've got some actually, like some people tweeted and stuff and put stuff- Oh... on Facebook about this. Oh, oh. There's this guy Rocky McShackelford
• 1:10:59
that says, "You guys rigid 'cause my bikes need to be light as possible so to keep my 200-pound ass on top of the snow."
• 1:11:06
Our Bike Black Ribbon test pilot, Michael McColgan, his answer to the question rigid or suspended is purple. Thank you very much, Mike. Thanks, Mike. [laughs] Cory Freund or Freund. Freund.
• 1:11:21
Uh, he says, "Suspension is for people who make mistakes." [laughs] Uh, Aaron Terre says, "Rigid always because I'll forget to call." What the... [laughs] Maybe that's why he posted it there.
• 1:11:36
Uh, Ski Sonnini, "Rigid, did not have enough euros to call in." [laughs] Mm. Uh, Barney Mills says, "Rigid." Pete Kameka says, "No suspension to seize up." Well, I think I'm having a seizure.
• 1:11:54
Sounds like a lot of, uh, a lot of rigids on that list. Let's go to Twitter. Let's check the Twitter board. I do rigid 'cause I have rigid. Yeah. You know? Kinda how it works. Yeah, exactly, you know?
• 1:12:06
I, and I, I'm not sure. I've, I've played with a little bit of suspension. And I mean, if you have a Bluto on your bike, there's three settings. You can lock that sucker out, which is a- Right. Yeah...
• 1:12:15
quarter or a 3/8 of an inch blow off, and boom shaka-laka, you got yourself a four-pound rigid fork [laughs] or three- Yeah... and a half pound rigid fork or whatever it is. I'm not trying to rap on the Bluto.
• 1:12:26
I'm Bluto's friend now. I'm just talking about the things- [laughs]... where it's like, "Oh, I'm bouncing," or, "I'm not bouncing." Right. Well, I don't... No one tweeted. How shocking.
• 1:12:36
[laughs] Was that the Facebook or the tweeting? Uh, the forum was, was the Facebook. All right. The Facebook. And we asked, we asked, like in 100 different ways. As much as we can. Hey, call us and stuff. Please.
• 1:12:49
