Transcript
- 0:00Okay, so today we're diving into AI for business leaders.
- 0:05And you know, everyone's talking about AI,
- 0:06but we wanna cut through the hype
- 0:08and get to the practical stuff.
- 0:09What does it actually mean for you?
- 0:11So to help us with that, we've got some great insights
- 0:13from Linda Yao, COO of Lenovo's Solutions and Services Group.
- 0:18Yeah, and what's really interesting about Linda
- 0:20is she's actually seen like three different AI booms
- 0:25during her career, so it's not her first rodeo.
- 0:27Right.
- 0:28And every time, it wasn't just hype,
- 0:30there were actually real changes,
- 0:32you know, practical applications that came out of it.
- 0:34Yeah, it's not theoretical for her, right.
- 0:36Exactly.
- 0:36She's seeing it actually impact businesses,
- 0:39and she actually connects it back
- 0:40to something I thought was really interesting.
- 0:41Remember the whole Flash Boys thing with high-speed trading?
- 0:44She said that was AI too, you know,
- 0:46quietly revolutionizing Wall Street.
- 0:48Interesting, yeah.
- 0:49But now she sees it like expanding even further.
- 0:51Like every industry is gonna be touched by this
- 0:54in ways we're just starting to figure out.
- 0:56Yeah, and the important thing to remember here
- 0:58is it's not just about the tech companies like Lenovo
- 1:00that are building this stuff.
- 1:02It's about how AI is actually changing the playing field
- 1:06for everybody else.
- 1:07Yeah, and speaking of Lenovo,
- 1:09something I thought was really interesting
- 1:10about her approach is she's all about, you know,
- 1:13that saying eating your own cooking.
- 1:15Right.
- 1:16They're very much about testing these solutions
- 1:18internally first before they even think
- 1:20about bringing them to clients.
- 1:22Exactly, they wanna make sure that it works.
- 1:24And they have a great example,
- 1:25using AI to make their own supply chain more efficient.
- 1:29They actually cut shipping costs by like 10% just from that.
- 1:33So, you know, they're not just talking the talk.
- 1:35Yeah, it's reassuring.
- 1:36It's not just a concept, right?
- 1:37They're actually using this stuff themselves.
- 1:39Yeah.
- 1:40But okay, so with all this talk about practical AI,
- 1:44where do you even begin?
- 1:45Like as a business leader,
- 1:47it's like how do you even wrap your head around all this?
- 1:48Yeah, it can be overwhelming for sure.
- 1:50That's where Linda's four pillars come in.
- 1:52Okay.
- 1:53So it has this framework and it starts
- 1:55with a really powerful duo,
- 1:57security first and people next.
- 1:59Okay, so security first, people next.
- 2:02So it sounds like it's not just about the tech itself,
- 2:04it's about making sure that your systems
- 2:06and your team are ready for this whole AI driven future.
- 2:09Yeah, you have to have a really solid foundation.
- 2:12So robust security is obviously critical
- 2:15because you are gonna be dealing with a lot of data
- 2:17and you wanna protect that.
- 2:18And then the people aspect is huge too.
- 2:20You need to make sure that your workforce is, you know,
- 2:22comfortable and prepared for all these changes
- 2:24that AI is gonna bring.
- 2:25That resonates so much because you could have
- 2:27the most cutting edge AI tool in the world.
- 2:30But if your data is not secure
- 2:32or if your employees are afraid to even use it,
- 2:34you're kind of shooting yourself in the foot
- 2:36before you even begin, right?
- 2:37Exactly.
- 2:38And to help navigate that whole people aspect,
- 2:42Linda has this question that she says every business leader
- 2:45should be asking about every single task.
- 2:47And it's a good one.
- 2:48Will AI automate it, augment it or replace it entirely?
- 2:51Wow.
- 2:52And the answer to that has huge implications for,
- 2:57you know, your talent strategy, your training programs,
- 2:59how you manage your people in this age of AI.
- 3:01That's a big question, right?
- 3:03Because it gets to the heart of this whole like
- 3:05job security thing that everyone's worried about.
- 3:08But it sounds like Linda's not saying
- 3:10AI is coming for our jobs.
- 3:11It's more like how can AI help us be better
- 3:14at what we already do?
- 3:15Right, exactly.
- 3:16And it's interesting because once you've got
- 3:18that foundation in place, like you said,
- 3:20with the security, with the people,
- 3:22she says the other two pillars kind of fall into place,
- 3:24technology and process.
- 3:26You've built that foundation.
- 3:27And now you can actually start building with AI as a tool.
- 3:31It makes sense when you think about it that way, right?
- 3:33You've taken care of like the really important stuff,
- 3:36the security, making sure your people are on board.
- 3:38And now you can actually focus on,
- 3:40okay, how do we implement this in a way
- 3:42that actually makes our processes, our workflows better?
- 3:46Yeah, and by putting security first and people next,
- 3:49you're not just like mitigating risk.
- 3:51You're actually putting yourself in a position
- 3:53to actually really succeed with AI.
- 3:55Setting yourself up for success.
- 3:57Yeah, and not just from a tech standpoint,
- 3:58but from that human element too.
- 4:00But speaking of success,
- 4:03you know, one of the things that Linda talks about
- 4:04that I thought was really interesting is how AI
- 4:07is changing the way we use data to make decisions.
- 4:09Oh, absolutely.
- 4:11Data is everything, right?
- 4:12Right.
- 4:13She really believes that to unlock the potential of AI,
- 4:16you need good data.
- 4:18And it's all about creating this positive feedback loop
- 4:21where AI and data quality actually reinforce each other.
- 4:25So it's not even just about using AI.
- 4:26It's about AI kind of forcing us
- 4:28to get better at data in general.
- 4:30Like a lot of companies,
- 4:31that might seem like a huge undertaking.
- 4:33Yeah, it can be, but she sees it
- 4:35as like this positive challenge.
- 4:37I love this analogy she uses.
- 4:38She says, it's like a rising tide lifts all boats.
- 4:42Right.
- 4:42Even if you're not building like the next chat GPT.
- 4:44Right.
- 4:45Just the fact that there's this focus now
- 4:47on data quality.
- 4:48Yeah.
- 4:49Everyone's gonna benefit from that.
- 4:50It's a good way to look at it.
- 4:51Okay, but here's the question
- 4:52I think is on everybody's mind, right?
- 4:54Like does AI have the power to like totally disrupt
- 4:58business models as we know it?
- 5:00Her answer is basically, it has to.
- 5:03Right.
- 5:04If you think about the investment that's going into this,
- 5:05both in terms of like resources and people,
- 5:07for that investment to make sense,
- 5:09it has to lead to these like fundamental changes
- 5:11in how businesses work.
- 5:12So it's not even just about adopting a new technology.
- 5:15It's about changing how we work, how we think,
- 5:17how we solve problems.
- 5:19Exactly.
- 5:19And she really emphasizes that skill development
- 5:22is gonna be critical for people to,
- 5:25navigate this successfully.
- 5:27Yeah.
- 5:28And it's not just about like coding
- 5:30or understanding algorithms.
- 5:31It's about being adaptable, being able to problem solve,
- 5:35think critically, learn new things
- 5:37as this whole AI landscape changes.
- 5:39And she uses a good analogy to kind of illustrate this point.
- 5:43She talks about how, think about electricity, right?
- 5:46The internet, even mobile phones.
- 5:48Like every time we've had one of these big technological
- 5:50shifts, there's this fear that like,
- 5:52oh, it's gonna be the end of jobs as we know it.
- 5:54But what happens?
- 5:55We adapt.
- 5:56That's right.
- 5:57History repeats itself, right?
- 5:58Yeah.
- 5:59And just like those things led to all sorts of new
- 6:01opportunities and industries and ways of life,
- 6:03AI is gonna do the same thing.
- 6:05Right.
- 6:06It's about finding the opportunity and the disruption,
- 6:08but we gotta acknowledge the elephant in the room here,
- 6:10which is, will AI take our jobs?
- 6:13It's a fair question, right?
- 6:14Like it's the one everyone's wondering about.
- 6:16It is.
- 6:16And Linda actually says, it's an opportunity, not a threat.
- 6:20Instead of thinking about AI taking our jobs,
- 6:23we should be thinking about how we can use AI to,
- 6:26you know, learn new things, specialize.
- 6:28So almost like it's pushing us up the value chain.
- 6:30Exactly.
- 6:31Think about it, like a few years ago,
- 6:33nobody was talking about prompt engineers.
- 6:35And now that's a real job, a high paying job.
- 6:37So AI is creating these new opportunities,
- 6:40even as it changes existing ones.
- 6:42So true.
- 6:42It's like, yeah, some things might become obsolete,
- 6:45but there's gonna be this whole new landscape of jobs
- 6:47that we can't even imagine yet.
- 6:49And Linda actually makes the point that AI could even make
- 6:51our work more enjoyable, which I thought was interesting.
- 6:54It's like, what if it takes over all the boring stuff,
- 6:56the repetitive stuff, and then we get to actually focus
- 6:59on the things that are, you know,
- 7:00more creative, more strategic.
- 7:02Right.
- 7:03Working smarter, not harder.
- 7:05And I think that's a perfect segue into one of our other
- 7:07big points, which is,
- 7:08you gotta have realistic expectations.
- 7:09Okay, so no magic bullets.
- 7:11Right.
- 7:12AI is not gonna solve all your problems overnight.
- 7:14It's a tool, a powerful tool, but it's not a magic wand.
- 7:18Yeah.
- 7:19And to really get the most out of it,
- 7:20you have to be smart about how you use it.
- 7:22So it's about finding those specific use cases, right?
- 7:25Like what problems can AI actually solve for my business,
- 7:30not just jumping on the bandwagon
- 7:31because it's the cool new thing.
- 7:33Exactly.
- 7:34Find the right tool for the job.
- 7:36And that's where she says,
- 7:37experimentation is really important.
- 7:39Don't be afraid to kind of get your hands dirty.
- 7:41Try things out and see what sticks, see what works for you.
- 7:44So if you're listening to this, think about like,
- 7:46what are your biggest pain points at work right now?
- 7:49Could AI be part of that solution?
- 7:52Maybe it's automating something.
- 7:53Maybe it's helping you analyze data better.
- 7:56Maybe it's, you know,
- 7:58personalizing your customer interactions,
- 8:00or even just freeing up your team's time
- 8:02so that they can focus on more strategic stuff.
- 8:05Right, the possibilities are really endless,
- 8:07but you gotta start somewhere.
- 8:08Exactly.
- 8:09And you know, I love how Linda puts it.
- 8:10She says, this AI journey is just beginning
- 8:13and your involvement is crucial.
- 8:15Don't be a bystander.
- 8:17Jump in, ask questions,
- 8:18and you know, really be a part of shaping
- 8:21how this technology is gonna transform our world.
- 8:24It's an exciting time to be in business.
- 8:25It really is.
- 8:27Well, on that note, this has been an awesome deep dive.
- 8:30Thanks for joining us today,
- 8:31and we'll catch you next time
- 8:33for another look beyond the buzzwords.
