- 0:07Speaker 1: All right, so another episode of Splash Hit Territory. We
- 0:09Speaker 1: have a very special guest joining us today, The Bulldog.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Eighteen season of the Big Leagues. Three time All Start,
- 0:16Speaker 1: nineteen eighty NLSI Young Award Winner, nineteen eighty eight World
- 0:20Speaker 1: Series Champion. I'm gonna go on for a little bit here, NLCSMVP,
- 0:25Speaker 1: World Series MVP, MLB records, fifty nine scoreless eddings. Current
- 0:29Speaker 1: broadcaster for the Dodgers in his thirteenth season. But besides
- 0:34Speaker 1: being teammates with me in two thousand, his biggest accomplishment
- 0:37Speaker 1: was he was a San Francisco Giant in nineteen ninety eight.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Oral Herscheizer joins the show or what's going on?
- 0:42Speaker 1: Man?
- 0:42Speaker 2: Thank you very much. It's great to be with the FP.
- 0:46Speaker 2: This is fun from my hotel room here in San Francisco.
- 0:49Speaker 2: As the Dodgers and the Giants go at it again tonight.
- 0:52Speaker 1: We'll talk about the rivalry a little bit. We did
- 0:55Speaker 1: a podcast previewing this rivalry. We've both been on both
- 0:58Speaker 1: sides of it, but I liked it when it was
- 1:01Speaker 1: a little bit chippy and there was stuff going on
- 1:04Speaker 1: and these two teams hated each other.
- 1:06Speaker 2: The Dodgers have been so dominant lately.
- 1:09Speaker 1: But you know, there was something that happened last night
- 1:12Speaker 1: that might have made it a little bit chippy. But
- 1:14Speaker 1: talk about being on both sides of that and what
- 1:16Speaker 1: the rivalry has been in the past and what it
- 1:17Speaker 1: is right now.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Yeah, it seems like it has been a little bit
- 1:21Speaker 2: more physical in the past, but I think it's more
- 1:23Speaker 2: not just Dodger Giants, but it's just the culture of
- 1:26Speaker 2: baseball has changed. The fraternity used to be a fraternity
- 1:31Speaker 2: where you could fight like brothers. I think the fraternity
- 1:34Speaker 2: now is more like you just go over to your
- 1:37Speaker 2: brother's room and you knock on the door and say, hey,
- 1:39Speaker 2: can you turn your music down. I don't think it
- 1:43Speaker 2: gets physical where you start wrestling in the hallway or
- 1:46Speaker 2: you take it outside and you know, you start playing
- 1:48Speaker 2: tackle football, or you're playing flag football, but you tackle
- 1:52Speaker 2: your brother. So yeah, it was definitely a little different.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I think. You know, the sad part about it for
- 2:01Speaker 2: me was when it got into the stands and then
- 2:04Speaker 2: I think it started to calm things down on the field.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Fans being nicer to each other. We know what happened
- 2:09Speaker 2: to the Giant fan in LA back in the day,
- 2:12Speaker 2: and you know, there have been things on the field
- 2:15Speaker 2: that have actually hurt people, so it might not be
- 2:18Speaker 2: as intense, but the rivalry is still there, I think
- 2:20Speaker 2: in people's hearts. Yeah, I think so too.
- 2:23Speaker 1: And I've been in the stands at Oracle Park with
- 2:26Speaker 1: Dodger fans that were nothing but polite.
- 2:28Speaker 2: So hopefully that continues.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Let the guys fight it on the field, don't ever
- 2:31Speaker 1: fight it out in the stands.
- 2:32Speaker 2: It's baseball.
- 2:34Speaker 1: It doesn't mean that much, although it is the best
- 2:36Speaker 1: rivalry in.
- 2:37Speaker 2: All the baseball talk about.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Well, let's talk about what you saw from Landing Roup
- 2:40Speaker 1: last night before we get into Atani today. He's a
- 2:44Speaker 1: guy world that I've watched kind of grow up, stand
- 2:46Speaker 1: a little bit taller on the mound.
- 2:47Speaker 2: He's got a little bit.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Of you know, swagger and for lack of a better term,
- 2:51Speaker 1: fu and them, but his mound presence and his stuff
- 2:54Speaker 1: has really developed.
- 2:55Speaker 2: What'd you see last night? Well, I saw a right
- 2:58Speaker 2: handed Madison bung guard. I think he really stands out there, like,
- 3:03Speaker 2: you know what, I am here to enforce that we
- 3:06Speaker 2: are on defense, that I am the pitcher. Madison was
- 3:10Speaker 2: a hitter, so he even had that those aspirations of
- 3:13Speaker 2: beating you when he got into the batter's box, but
- 3:15Speaker 2: on the mound. As far as the way he carries himself,
- 3:17Speaker 2: I like the way he carries himself. I had to
- 3:20Speaker 2: kind of act that way a little bit. I didn't
- 3:22Speaker 2: have a beard or an ugly face where I could
- 3:24Speaker 2: really scowl in it. Guys, but my nickname was the bulldog,
- 3:27Speaker 2: and there was something about having a presence out there,
- 3:30Speaker 2: even if you felt terrible. You want to look like
- 3:33Speaker 2: your roll and you don't want to give the hitter
- 3:35Speaker 2: any edge. And you know, as a hitter, the edge
- 3:38Speaker 2: is to look out there and go, this guy doesn't
- 3:40Speaker 2: believe in himself, so I'm going to get him now.
- 3:42Speaker 2: And that kind of edge of confidence is really really important.
- 3:45Speaker 2: I love the fact that he moves the ball around
- 3:48Speaker 2: the strike zone, you know, with his tremendous movement on
- 3:50Speaker 2: his change up in his sinker, the fact that he
- 3:53Speaker 2: will throw it inside to lefties who saw that early
- 3:56Speaker 2: on when he was having a lot of success against
- 3:58Speaker 2: the Dodgers. Last night, bead melode both sides of the
- 4:01Speaker 2: plate and speed him up. Also, using some altitude, would
- 4:04Speaker 2: go up in the strike zone and he's gotten, you know,
- 4:07Speaker 2: better depth on his curveball now and a little bit
- 4:10Speaker 2: more change of speeds, so his weapons are really really good.
- 4:14Speaker 2: You know, the inning that he had the trouble, of course,
- 4:16Speaker 2: he set the table and pushed a run across with walks,
- 4:19Speaker 2: But it really was a good, good outing for him.
- 4:22Speaker 2: You know, he was solid. He was locked in for
- 4:25Speaker 2: a couple of innings, then he wasn't, and then all
- 4:27Speaker 2: of a sudden he locked back in and off came
- 4:29Speaker 2: the bullpen, and it was enough runs to beat the Dodgers.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Well, I've talked to some sports psychologists and they're trying
- 4:35Speaker 1: to implement this in players where they have an alter ego,
- 4:39Speaker 1: whether it's a different name, a superhero's name. But like,
- 4:43Speaker 1: you just touch on something, and I think we should
- 4:45Speaker 1: touch on you were the nicest teammates I ever had.
- 4:48Speaker 1: You're were the nicest guys I've ever met, But on.
- 4:50Speaker 2: That fifth day you changed. Like how did you go
- 4:53Speaker 2: about that?
- 4:54Speaker 1: And what happened when you crossed that line to take
- 4:56Speaker 1: the mound on the fifth day?
- 4:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I appreciate the comment first of all,
- 5:02Speaker 2: and then I needed to become that guy I idolized
- 5:07Speaker 2: big league ballplayers. I am in awe of walking into
- 5:11Speaker 2: a big league stadium. I can't believe the money that
- 5:14Speaker 2: they paid us and still pay today. And so to
- 5:18Speaker 2: be in awe of all of that, and to think
- 5:21Speaker 2: at early on I had to get Gary Carter out
- 5:24Speaker 2: and Johnny Bench and Mike Schmidt and all these guys
- 5:27Speaker 2: that I watched on TV in the Game of the
- 5:28Speaker 2: week and different things, and all of a sudden, I'm
- 5:32Speaker 2: like pitching scared, I'm pitching like I gotta be perfect.
- 5:35Speaker 2: And Tommy Lasorda recognized that, and he gave me the
- 5:38Speaker 2: nickname Bulldog. And he pretty much, you know, psychologists, psychiatrist,
- 5:42Speaker 2: whatever collegist he is. He was very good at pulling
- 5:46Speaker 2: out the best in you, and he did it in
- 5:48Speaker 2: some odd ways. And for me, it was a you know,
- 5:51Speaker 2: nose to nose speech where he's yelling at me, telling me,
- 5:54Speaker 2: I don't like your first name, Oral, and your name
- 5:57Speaker 2: from now on is Bulldog, and you're going to act
- 5:59Speaker 2: like a bulldog. If you don't act like a bulldog,
- 6:02Speaker 2: you're going to be robbing money from churches compared to
- 6:05Speaker 2: flying in lear jets. And I can remember the speech,
- 6:08Speaker 2: and I can remember him right up in my face
- 6:10Speaker 2: giving me this nickname and just telling me, if you
- 6:14Speaker 2: read through the lines, he was saying, you're a big leaguer.
- 6:17Speaker 2: You just got to believe it and you got to
- 6:19Speaker 2: go out there and act it. And so when he
- 6:21Speaker 2: would bellow, come on, bulldog from the dugout, I would
- 6:25Speaker 2: hear that and know my manager believed in me. He
- 6:28Speaker 2: wants me to be tough. He knows I can get
- 6:30Speaker 2: these guys out, and he believes that I should throw strikes.
- 6:33Speaker 2: I don't need to be perfect. And so people wouldn't
- 6:36Speaker 2: realize how many balls that I threw right down the
- 6:39Speaker 2: middle on purpose, with good movement and with the change
- 6:43Speaker 2: of velocity a little bit on my fastball, that there
- 6:46Speaker 2: was no sense to try and throw another pitch. Just
- 6:49Speaker 2: try and get him to hit it on the ground.
- 6:50Speaker 2: There's no need to throw that pitch on the corner,
- 6:54Speaker 2: have a chance for the umpire to miss it, have
- 6:56Speaker 2: a chance for the hitter to say no, I'm not
- 6:58Speaker 2: going to swing at it, and then have to throw
- 7:00Speaker 2: another one compared to throwing it right down the middle,
- 7:03Speaker 2: and you're probably not going to hit your target perfectly.
- 7:06Speaker 2: But if it has the correct movement and it's late
- 7:09Speaker 2: and it's the right velocity or change in velocity. Then
- 7:12Speaker 2: you got a chance to get him out on one pitch,
- 7:15Speaker 2: and hence we had the attitude on the mound, the
- 7:18Speaker 2: nickname on the mound, and the ability to throw strikes
- 7:20Speaker 2: with movement, and things started to work out.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Well, that's good stuff for any pitcher. Now, it's just
- 7:26Speaker 1: they try to throw it as hard as they can
- 7:28Speaker 1: buy everybody. The Art of Pitching by Earl Herscheiser, great stuff.
- 7:31Speaker 1: You just touched on something that I didn't even think
- 7:33Speaker 1: we're going to talk about today. You played for a
- 7:35Speaker 1: young Italian manager that that was a good motivator, and
- 7:39Speaker 1: that maybe like the moves and what he did during
- 7:42Speaker 1: the game and the strategy wasn't the most important thing.
- 7:47Speaker 1: And the Giants have a young Italian manager that's a
- 7:49Speaker 1: good motivator. I mean, talk about that, you know, in
- 7:53Speaker 1: the development process in your years with Tommy Lesorta, and
- 7:56Speaker 1: how you saw him develop as a manager and how
- 7:58Speaker 1: he motivated you guys.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Besides that's what you just said, Yeah, I think he
- 8:02Speaker 2: was already a great manager when I arrived. So I
- 8:05Speaker 2: arrived in eighty three, Fernando had arrived in eighty one
- 8:09Speaker 2: and went through Fernando Mania, and they won the World Championship,
- 8:12Speaker 2: and he was Rookie of the Year and all those
- 8:14Speaker 2: different things. And then Tommy had arrived back in the
- 8:17Speaker 2: seventies with the Russell say Lopes Garvey group and Dusty
- 8:22Speaker 2: Baker and Reggie Smith and all those guys. Bird Houghton
- 8:26Speaker 2: was on that team back then. So I think for me,
- 8:29Speaker 2: the relationship with Tommy, not looking at his manager skills,
- 8:33Speaker 2: my relationship with him became personal. He became my baseball father,
- 8:37Speaker 2: you know, going out to dinner, on road trips, hanging out,
- 8:40Speaker 2: going to speaking engagements where he would say, just Bulldog,
- 8:43Speaker 2: come along, and I would watch him speak, and then
- 8:46Speaker 2: he would surprisingly invite me up to the podium and
- 8:49Speaker 2: force me to speak for a minute or two. So
- 8:51Speaker 2: it was part of my whole upbringing. It was totally
- 8:54Speaker 2: like a dad that was teaching you how to cross
- 8:56Speaker 2: the street and look both ways. It was unbelievable the
- 8:59Speaker 2: way he took care of me. And I knew that
- 9:03Speaker 2: I was part of it when he did get in
- 9:06Speaker 2: my face and he did name me bulldog, and he did,
- 9:09Speaker 2: you know, pay attention to me and invite me out
- 9:12Speaker 2: and teach me the ropes and the big leagues and
- 9:14Speaker 2: there were veterans on the team, like Rick Monday who
- 9:16Speaker 2: were alongside all up there in the broadcast booths. Still
- 9:19Speaker 2: he does the Dodger radio broadcast. Just the other day,
- 9:22Speaker 2: I was reminded of Rick and other veterans that took
- 9:25Speaker 2: care of me when I got to the big leagues
- 9:27Speaker 2: because in my eighth start against the Reds, I would
- 9:30Speaker 2: face the minimum through seven and Nicko Saski was coming
- 9:34Speaker 2: up and I got to a three to zero count
- 9:36Speaker 2: with him, and he swung and he got the first
- 9:38Speaker 2: hit of the game. And after the inning, I sat
- 9:40Speaker 2: down next to Rick, I remembered and said, I can't
- 9:43Speaker 2: believe he was swinging three to oho and he said, oral,
- 9:45Speaker 2: it's a one nothing game and he's a home run hitter.
- 9:48Speaker 2: And I'm like, this is another way that these guys
- 9:51Speaker 2: just taught you how to be a big leaguer and
- 9:53Speaker 2: how the game was played at that level. So when
- 9:55Speaker 2: you talk about Tommy Lasorda and the question was about
- 9:58Speaker 2: his managing skills developing, uh, he was already a great
- 10:02Speaker 2: manager when I got there, but it definitely was in
- 10:04Speaker 2: a different form than we're going to see from the
- 10:06Speaker 2: current San Francisco Giant manager. I think he's gonna be
- 10:09Speaker 2: a little bit more soft shoot, where Tommy was more
- 10:12Speaker 2: in your face.
- 10:13Speaker 1: That's a different game now if you're harsh on these guys,
- 10:16Speaker 1: now they go sit in the corner for a while
- 10:18Speaker 1: and you and you lose them. So yeah, it's gonna
- 10:21Speaker 1: be fun to watch the evolution. And Tommy's the best.
- 10:23Speaker 1: I mean, it was so cool to be around him. Yeah,
- 10:26Speaker 1: here's when I was in LA. Let's talk about Otani.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Tonight's pitcher two and oh with the five he didn't
- 10:33Speaker 1: hit last time. There's a lot of talk about the
- 10:35Speaker 1: Otani rule, which whatever, But but what have you see
- 10:38Speaker 1: with this guy? And how cool is it to watch
- 10:40Speaker 1: him hit every day and pitch every fifth day?
- 10:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it's uh, it's very interesting to watch him every day.
- 10:48Speaker 2: He's the same every day. I mean, the batting stands,
- 10:51Speaker 2: there's no big adjustments. This is who he is. This
- 10:53Speaker 2: is when he hits barely he ever hits on the field.
- 10:56Speaker 2: He gets all his work done in the cage. But
- 10:58Speaker 2: when he's slumping a little bit, he will go out
- 11:01Speaker 2: on the field and want to watch the ball fly
- 11:03Speaker 2: out of the ballpark. I think to help his confidence
- 11:05Speaker 2: a little bit and not just to get the measurements
- 11:07Speaker 2: in the cage. To watch him work as a pitcher,
- 11:10Speaker 2: it's meticulous. It's at the same time of day when
- 11:13Speaker 2: he does his lung toss or when he does his
- 11:15Speaker 2: catch player, when he does his side work. He's very regimented.
- 11:20Speaker 2: It reminds me a little bit of Clayton Kershaw, but
- 11:22Speaker 2: he's doing it on both sides of the ball, where
- 11:25Speaker 2: it is just so meticulous about what he does off
- 11:29Speaker 2: the field that the fans don't see. He's as meticulous
- 11:32Speaker 2: off the field as he is on the field when
- 11:34Speaker 2: he's preparing for a game, as far as his sleep
- 11:37Speaker 2: and how he eats and how he goes about his
- 11:40Speaker 2: day and how he wears his headphones and stays in
- 11:43Speaker 2: the zone for what he's doing. You know, he's Michael Jordan,
- 11:47Speaker 2: He's Magic Johnson, He's whoever you want to name, Tiger Woods.
- 11:52Speaker 2: As far as the distractions and the people that want
- 11:55Speaker 2: a piece of him, but he has hedges around him
- 11:58Speaker 2: that allow him to still stay in the zone. And
- 12:01Speaker 2: that tells me how important baseball is to him, how
- 12:05Speaker 2: important winning is to him, how important giving his best
- 12:09Speaker 2: is to him. Because you could easily say I make
- 12:12Speaker 2: seventy million dollars a year. I make another fifty or
- 12:15Speaker 2: whatever on top of that endorsements, and you know what,
- 12:18Speaker 2: I've made it. And you can start to get a
- 12:20Speaker 2: little lackadaisical, or you can say, you know what, it's
- 12:22Speaker 2: okay today to do this. So I think I'll go
- 12:25Speaker 2: to the mall. And you know, if he went to
- 12:27Speaker 2: the mall, he'd have to take three police officers with
- 12:29Speaker 2: him and be in two limos to hide, one going
- 12:32Speaker 2: one way and the other going the other way, like
- 12:34Speaker 2: the president. But it shows me how important baseball is
- 12:38Speaker 2: to him. You know, he's a baseball junkie. He's like you,
- 12:41Speaker 2: he's like me. You know, he's a gym rat and
- 12:43Speaker 2: and us Jim rats. If we have our focus and
- 12:47Speaker 2: our blinders on which he does on a daily basis,
- 12:50Speaker 2: it's it's impressive. It's really impressive.
- 12:52Speaker 1: What's it like traveling with the team now after a
- 12:54Speaker 1: couple of World series and having Otani? Is it just
- 12:57Speaker 1: like traveling with the Beatles? I mean, what does it
- 12:58Speaker 1: look like when you get off the bus at a hotel?
- 13:01Speaker 3: Is it nuts?
- 13:02Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 13:02Speaker 2: It is nuts because Otani is definitely the focused. But
- 13:07Speaker 2: then you have Mookie Bets and Freddie Freeman and Will
- 13:09Speaker 2: Smith and Tascar Hernandez and then all you know, Blake
- 13:12Speaker 2: Snell and you know, we travel on multiple planes. We
- 13:16Speaker 2: don't have just one plane. The players have a plane,
- 13:18Speaker 2: then the staff and everybody else has a plane. We've
- 13:21Speaker 2: got buses that leave the hotel every half hour from
- 13:25Speaker 2: a certain hour to up to a certain hour. We
- 13:28Speaker 2: have chefs that will travel with us. I mean it
- 13:31Speaker 2: is like the Beatles. It's crazy. And the Dodger organization
- 13:36Speaker 2: has really made it a destination for other players. They
- 13:40Speaker 2: don't have to pay the top dollar, even though we're
- 13:43Speaker 2: the highest paying club. There are players that just want
- 13:47Speaker 2: to be Dodgers now because they feel like maybe the
- 13:50Speaker 2: staff can fix them. Between the internet staff and between
- 13:54Speaker 2: the pitching coaches and between the hitting coaches and the
- 13:56Speaker 2: role they're going to play and the players are going
- 13:59Speaker 2: to be around learn from, it becomes a destination for
- 14:02Speaker 2: these guys. And then how they treat the families, how
- 14:05Speaker 2: they treat the travel, how what hotels we stay in,
- 14:08Speaker 2: what goes on around the club as far as food
- 14:11Speaker 2: and all the different things. Dodger Stadium, locker room now
- 14:15Speaker 2: back in our day, you know how small the locker
- 14:18Speaker 2: room was well. The facility for the players now is
- 14:22Speaker 2: from home plate all the way down to the left
- 14:25Speaker 2: field foul pole and three stories deep, three stories deep.
- 14:30Speaker 2: It is an athletic club. It is a hotel. It
- 14:33Speaker 2: is multiple kitchens. It is sleep rooms, it is anything.
- 14:37Speaker 2: It is swim x, it is swimming pool, it is
- 14:40Speaker 2: quiet rooms. It is everything you would want. It's I
- 14:44Speaker 2: don't think fp we would have ever gone home. We
- 14:47Speaker 2: would have just said, up, I'm just staying in the clubhouse.
- 14:51Speaker 2: When we go on the road, I'll get on the plane,
- 14:53Speaker 2: you know, tell my family to come visit me.
- 14:56Speaker 1: You know, the divorce rate for Dodger players is higher
- 14:59Speaker 1: than any other.
- 15:01Speaker 2: It's crazy. I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if they
- 15:04Speaker 2: wouldn't build a couple of apartments down in there for
- 15:07Speaker 2: the young players to just say, oh, you guys can
- 15:09Speaker 2: just stay here and learn baseball. So amazing.
- 15:13Speaker 1: You missed the George Murph's George Foreman girl making a
- 15:16Speaker 1: burger before you went out to what I mean giants.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Didn't we have waffle Mania on Sundays and all kinds
- 15:23Speaker 2: of stuff and murfh I mean Murph our clubhouse guy.
- 15:27Speaker 2: The hall of Fame clubhouse guy Murph would not be
- 15:29Speaker 2: able to walk from one end of the close the
- 15:31Speaker 2: other without catching his breath.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Murph's the greatest man. He's one of my dear friends.
- 15:36Speaker 1: I'm sure yea too last.
- 15:38Speaker 3: Thing, or I'll let you go.
- 15:39Speaker 1: I know you got a big day plan before you
- 15:40Speaker 1: get to the yard. I mean, how do these guys
- 15:42Speaker 1: stay hungry? I mean, we're making Giants fans sick with
- 15:45Speaker 1: all this Dodger talk right now, But I think I
- 15:48Speaker 1: think you know the Giants one in ten, twelve, and fourteen,
- 15:51Speaker 1: they stayed hungry through those years.
- 15:53Speaker 2: You want it nineteen eighty eight?
- 15:55Speaker 1: Like after back to back? How do you stay hungry
- 15:58Speaker 1: as a player with all the money and all the
- 16:00Speaker 1: stuff you're talking about, how do you stay focused to
- 16:02Speaker 1: do it again?
- 16:04Speaker 2: Well, I think the quality of the player that they
- 16:06Speaker 2: bring in. You either want to be on the team,
- 16:10Speaker 2: or you want to get more at bats or more innings,
- 16:12Speaker 2: or you want to be a Hall of Famer. And
- 16:14Speaker 2: I think they stay hungry that way. They compete with
- 16:17Speaker 2: each other, and they're competing with the distance of a
- 16:19Speaker 2: career where they want multiple rings, they want multiple MVPs,
- 16:23Speaker 2: they want batting titles, they want eer titles, they want
- 16:26Speaker 2: cy Young. So I think at that level they compete.
- 16:29Speaker 2: And I think Dave Roberts and Andrew Friedman, the president
- 16:33Speaker 2: of Baseball Ops, and Gomezi and all the different people
- 16:36Speaker 2: around them, they keep them humble, They treat them with respect,
- 16:39Speaker 2: They treat them with in a way that they esteem them,
- 16:42Speaker 2: and they get whatever they want. But the expectation is,
- 16:45Speaker 2: as you're getting whatever you need and whatever you want,
- 16:48Speaker 2: you're going to work your butt off. And so these
- 16:51Speaker 2: guys do stay healthy. And the Dodgers done a great
- 16:54Speaker 2: job of building that character or picking the right guys
- 16:57Speaker 2: with the right character. And you said something about and
- 17:00Speaker 2: fans being jealous that we're talking so much Dodgers. Well,
- 17:03Speaker 2: the year that I was a Giant, and I will
- 17:05Speaker 2: say this, the Giants were probably the best organization in
- 17:09Speaker 2: baseball in nineteen ninety eight. When I joined them, I
- 17:12Speaker 2: came from the Cleveland Indians for three years. The Giants
- 17:15Speaker 2: actually courted me before I became an Indian, and I
- 17:17Speaker 2: actually had dinner at Peter McGowan's house and really wanted
- 17:21Speaker 2: to be a Giant. And there was something that slipped
- 17:23Speaker 2: up between the general manager and the owner as far
- 17:26Speaker 2: as the negotiations with me, or I would have been
- 17:28Speaker 2: a giant for those three years that I was an
- 17:30Speaker 2: Indian that actually offered more money. After I called mister
- 17:34Speaker 2: McGowan and said thank you for the negotiation, they actually
- 17:38Speaker 2: offered more money and he goes, what did we offer
- 17:40Speaker 2: you oral? And I go dah da da da this,
- 17:42Speaker 2: and he goes, well, I'll do this. Change it. Well,
- 17:45Speaker 2: I'd already given my word to the Indians, and so
- 17:48Speaker 2: I had to call the Indians and say, you know,
- 17:50Speaker 2: is there a way that I can get out of
- 17:51Speaker 2: giving you my word that I'll be in camp tomorrow
- 17:53Speaker 2: And they said, nope, we'll see in camp tomorrow. And
- 17:55Speaker 2: so I had to call mister McGowan back and say,
- 17:58Speaker 2: you know, sir, have you had the best? It was
- 18:00Speaker 2: a little late, and I have to go and be
- 18:03Speaker 2: an Indian. So three years later, when the Indian thing
- 18:07Speaker 2: was over, he called immediately again and I became a
- 18:10Speaker 2: giant that year. But I will tell you the people
- 18:12Speaker 2: with San Francisco giants and you know, this class off
- 18:17Speaker 2: the charts. I'm still good friends with Ned Coletti. Still
- 18:21Speaker 2: he was the one that talked to me and brought
- 18:23Speaker 2: me back to the Giants. I love this area of
- 18:26Speaker 2: the country and I only wish the best for the Giants.
- 18:29Speaker 2: I think the rivalry is so very important, and I
- 18:32Speaker 2: think both organizations are trying to be at the top.
- 18:34Speaker 2: And I know it's been a dry spell for the Giants,
- 18:37Speaker 2: but I root for them to be up there with
- 18:40Speaker 2: the Dodgers again. And that would be a lot of
- 18:42Speaker 2: fun to have that kind of competition.
- 18:45Speaker 3: It'd be good for baseball.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Well, i'm blaming Peter McGowan for you and I not
- 18:49Speaker 1: doing broadcast together for the Giants, because that would have
- 18:51Speaker 1: been like five years or four or five years with
- 18:53Speaker 1: the Giants, and who knows, Yeah.
- 18:55Speaker 2: I would I would have not been booed out of here.
- 18:57Speaker 2: But I picked the San Francisco Giants, and I picked
- 18:59Speaker 2: the New Mets, and I picked the Cleveland Indians, and
- 19:02Speaker 2: I ran out of ability to not be a Chicago Cup.
- 19:05Speaker 2: I picked all the three teams, and I wanted to
- 19:07Speaker 2: go to Chicago. I picked the Giants because I knew
- 19:10Speaker 2: the fans would hold me accountable, and I knew I
- 19:12Speaker 2: loved this city and I knew I loved pitching a candlestick.
- 19:15Speaker 2: And then I picked the Mets because I knew they
- 19:17Speaker 2: would hold me accountable. And beating the Mets in eighty eight,
- 19:19Speaker 2: I'm like, I don't want to go someplace just to
- 19:21Speaker 2: be that cast off veteran that brings young pitchers around.
- 19:25Speaker 2: I want to go someplace where the fans are intense,
- 19:27Speaker 2: so they're going to hold me accountable. And we got
- 19:29Speaker 2: a chance to win. And I went to Cleveland to
- 19:31Speaker 2: be a better baseball person in the future as a
- 19:33Speaker 2: broadcaster or a front office person, to learn the American
- 19:36Speaker 2: League game. Well, now the games are the same as
- 19:38Speaker 2: far as the rules, but back then with the DH,
- 19:41Speaker 2: I wanted to go to the American League and learn
- 19:43Speaker 2: all those cities and be ready for post career. And
- 19:47Speaker 2: then my body gave out. At forty two. I wanted
- 19:49Speaker 2: to go and live in a Brownstone and play for
- 19:52Speaker 2: the Cubs, and my arm and my body just gave
- 19:55Speaker 2: way and I couldn't have enough ability to do that.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Yeah, that was one of my dreams, to to play
- 20:00Speaker 1: at Wrigley Field.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Just walk to work and that atmosphere is so great.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Or go do your stuff.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Man, thanks so much being on. I really appreciate your time.
- 20:09Speaker 1: I'll see you at the yard in a couple of hours.
- 20:10Speaker 4: See you tonight, Drew has Life.
- 20:23Speaker 5: Man, you liking it.
- 20:24Speaker 3: I'm all good, all good.
- 20:26Speaker 6: I appreciate you guys having me excited to be on
- 20:28Speaker 6: the show, but yeah, I'll go. Just got a couple
- 20:31Speaker 6: of series wins back to back and looking forward to
- 20:34Speaker 6: keeping a rolling hopefully.
- 20:35Speaker 5: What's changed, What looks good over the past week that
- 20:38Speaker 5: you didn't see in the first few weeks, or that
- 20:40Speaker 5: the team didn't see in the first few weeks.
- 20:41Speaker 6: I should say sure, I mean a little bit. For me,
- 20:45Speaker 6: I don't know the answer to that. I was in
- 20:47Speaker 6: triple at to start of the year.
- 20:50Speaker 3: You know. I think part of it, too, is just
- 20:52Speaker 3: the kind of the flow of the season. You know.
- 20:55Speaker 6: I think everybody gets a little hyped up about a
- 20:58Speaker 6: good or a bad start. Obviously, in a perfect role,
- 21:00Speaker 6: you want to get off to a great start, but
- 21:02Speaker 6: that's that's not baseball as we know.
- 21:05Speaker 3: So I think it shoul kind of flow the season.
- 21:07Speaker 6: We know we got a good roster and a good team,
- 21:08Speaker 6: and you know a lot of veterans that have been
- 21:12Speaker 6: around a while and they know not to get too
- 21:15Speaker 6: high or too low and kind of just keep working
- 21:17Speaker 6: and keep your head down.
- 21:18Speaker 3: And I think you're kind of seeing that now.
- 21:22Speaker 7: Drew Rush Stripling. Nice to meet you, man, I was
- 21:24Speaker 7: a giant a couple of years before you in a
- 21:26Speaker 7: in a past regime. Where are you living, man? San
- 21:29Speaker 7: Francisco kind of a funny city to get acclimated to,
- 21:32Speaker 7: or you just across the street at the hotel, or
- 21:34Speaker 7: you find a spot already.
- 21:37Speaker 3: So I'm actually out.
- 21:38Speaker 6: I'm out across the bay over in Lafayette, Yeah, right now.
- 21:43Speaker 6: I spent a little time last year at the hotel
- 21:45Speaker 6: across the street when I got called up, so I
- 21:48Speaker 6: know that all too well. But yeah, I'm over the
- 21:51Speaker 6: bay right now, which is kind of nice just to
- 21:53Speaker 6: be a little separated from the city.
- 21:56Speaker 3: A little bit of a drive though, but I guess
- 21:58Speaker 3: that's okay.
- 21:59Speaker 7: Yeah, that Bay Bridge can be rough.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Man.
- 22:01Speaker 7: We did Lafayette too, We loved it. How about I mean,
- 22:05Speaker 7: let's let's get right into it.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Nana.
- 22:07Speaker 7: You know Tony and and he played for him in
- 22:09Speaker 7: college and now he's your guy in the big leagues.
- 22:11Speaker 2: I guess my question.
- 22:12Speaker 7: I know we're gonna get all the way into it,
- 22:14Speaker 7: but my question is, like, what you know from your
- 22:16Speaker 7: time at Tennessee with him? Where he's recruiting, he's got
- 22:19Speaker 7: young men under his belt and he's he's you know,
- 22:21Speaker 7: trying to get turn kids into men and put him
- 22:24Speaker 7: out into the real world. And now flip it to
- 22:27Speaker 7: coaching a major league team. What what did you see
- 22:29Speaker 7: from him from your time at Tennessee that you knew
- 22:31Speaker 7: that he had the skill set to take on the
- 22:33Speaker 7: role that he has now.
- 22:35Speaker 3: You know, I think he just has a really adaptable personality.
- 22:39Speaker 6: I think he can kind of mesh and click along
- 22:42Speaker 6: with like a bunch of different groups of people or
- 22:44Speaker 6: types of personalities, and I think that's kind of what
- 22:47Speaker 6: helped him in recruiting so much. But it's genuine, you know,
- 22:52Speaker 6: so it doesn't ever feel like fake or forced. It's
- 22:55Speaker 6: just kind of like he can just vibe with anyone
- 22:58Speaker 6: and you know, kind of mix in with whatever group. So,
- 23:02Speaker 6: you know, when I knew that it was a possibility
- 23:04Speaker 6: that he might, you know, be up for the job,
- 23:07Speaker 6: it made all the sense in my mind, and I
- 23:09Speaker 6: had total total confidence he can he can do it.
- 23:14Speaker 8: We'll jump back to him, but I want to talk
- 23:15Speaker 8: a little outfield real quick, san fran It's it's a
- 23:19Speaker 8: different kind of outfield plays pretty big. I know you
- 23:22Speaker 8: play all three different positions center field. I think you're
- 23:25Speaker 8: at center field now for the most part, if I'm
- 23:27Speaker 8: not mistaken. How has practice been out there? Have you
- 23:32Speaker 8: adjusted to that outfield, especially when that ball goes in
- 23:35Speaker 8: the right center field gap.
- 23:37Speaker 3: Yeah, it's uh, you know, it's unique.
- 23:39Speaker 6: I think I think the biggest thing is is just
- 23:43Speaker 6: the wind. You know, there's not really a predictable pattern
- 23:46Speaker 6: with it. There's not necessarily like flags you can look
- 23:50Speaker 6: at and know, Okay, the wind's blowing this direction today
- 23:53Speaker 6: or this direction. You know, it's uh, you kind of
- 23:56Speaker 6: just got to keep your feet moving the whole time. Ie,
- 23:58Speaker 6: if you think you're camp, you just gotta kind of
- 24:00Speaker 6: stay ready for the ball potentially, you know, blow one
- 24:03Speaker 6: way to the other and then you know, I think
- 24:06Speaker 6: there's certain times, whether it's like a six forty five game,
- 24:10Speaker 6: where you get certain shadows that make it a little
- 24:13Speaker 6: tough to see out there. But I mean again that
- 24:17Speaker 6: that's not just for us, it's for the opponent too,
- 24:20Speaker 6: So you try to, you know, make it your home
- 24:22Speaker 6: field advantage and give as mate reps there as you
- 24:24Speaker 6: possibly can. But I think you know, at the end
- 24:28Speaker 6: of the day, like you also try not to like
- 24:29Speaker 6: overthink it because I know a lot of people make
- 24:31Speaker 6: it out to be like the you know, crazy with
- 24:33Speaker 6: the right field wall or the triple's alley. But you know,
- 24:37Speaker 6: I can only cover so much ground, so you just
- 24:41Speaker 6: try to roll with the punches and catch the many
- 24:43Speaker 6: balls as you can.
- 24:45Speaker 7: Andrew, getting back to Tony a little bit here, how
- 24:48Speaker 7: about have you noticed that he is still himself and
- 24:53Speaker 7: has been from the jump? You know, like, I'm a
- 24:54Speaker 7: little bit different right now than I am around my friends.
- 24:58Speaker 7: You know, you kind of like ebb and flow on
- 25:00Speaker 7: the room or who you're around and what you think
- 25:02Speaker 7: you need to do or what you think people think
- 25:04Speaker 7: of you. Have you noticed Tony has the ability to
- 25:07Speaker 7: to stay himself or has it been an adjustment for him?
- 25:10Speaker 7: You know, I feel like we're starting to see more
- 25:12Speaker 7: edge come out from him, which we know and they're
- 25:14Speaker 7: customed to see him from him as he's now twenty
- 25:16Speaker 7: five games into his tenure. Uh maybe behind the scenes,
- 25:19Speaker 7: have you seen that from the start or has it
- 25:21Speaker 7: been an adjustment for him?
- 25:23Speaker 3: Yeah? I think you know, I think he's been himself.
- 25:26Speaker 6: To be honest with you, I think there are like
- 25:29Speaker 6: little adjustments that he makes along the way that you know,
- 25:32Speaker 6: he could answer better than I could, just from like
- 25:35Speaker 6: an observational standpoint. But as far as like personality, uh,
- 25:40Speaker 6: you know, he's been the exact same. You know, he's
- 25:43Speaker 6: always been an intense guy, and I think that's a
- 25:45Speaker 6: big reason why he got hired. So there's no reason
- 25:47Speaker 6: for him to change that. But you know, I think,
- 25:51Speaker 6: you know, you don't know what you don't know, so
- 25:53Speaker 6: like there would be no reason for him, you know,
- 25:56Speaker 6: like coming into the job to not be himself. And
- 25:59Speaker 6: then the season goes, you know, he learns things that
- 26:02Speaker 6: you can only learn as you go, and you know,
- 26:05Speaker 6: he makes small adjustments here and there, but that's that's
- 26:07Speaker 6: the game of baseball. Whether you're you know, a manager,
- 26:10Speaker 6: you know, a player, or some in the front office,
- 26:12Speaker 6: it's just a game of adjustments.
- 26:13Speaker 3: So he's good at that.
- 26:16Speaker 6: And I think the biggest thing, though, is he's just
- 26:19Speaker 6: been himself, which I think all the guys appreciate.
- 26:22Speaker 5: It's been fun to cover him so far, you know,
- 26:24Speaker 5: in the beginning of his tenure here. Since we're mostly
- 26:26Speaker 5: covering the major leagues, our Baseball America show handles a
- 26:30Speaker 5: lot of the college game. What is the all time
- 26:33Speaker 5: Tony Vaytello quote that stands out to you, whether it's
- 26:36Speaker 5: something that you know he says around the team or
- 26:38Speaker 5: something that you've seen him say publicly. He's already given
- 26:41Speaker 5: us like twenty since he started in the big leagues.
- 26:44Speaker 5: But I know he's been doing this for years. He
- 26:45Speaker 5: does all the cultural references too, right.
- 26:50Speaker 6: Sure, See, I'm a little I don't know if I'm
- 26:55Speaker 6: so used to it at this point. I've just been
- 26:56Speaker 6: with him for so long that, like, you know, I
- 26:58Speaker 6: don't want to say I'm numb to it, but like
- 27:00Speaker 6: we'll give me an example of like a quote that
- 27:03Speaker 6: caught you guys, you're like, oh, that's that's a good one,
- 27:05Speaker 6: and then maybe it's something to come to my head.
- 27:07Speaker 5: Okay. So, like he'll he'll bring up modern references, right,
- 27:10Speaker 5: just in the past few weeks, who is he brought up?
- 27:12Speaker 5: He did he did a Kanye reference, he did a
- 27:16Speaker 5: who is is it? A football reference? Like anything that's
- 27:19Speaker 5: like the story of the week. He'll just bring it up,
- 27:22Speaker 5: right and like somehow like he'll mix that into the conversation.
- 27:26Speaker 5: I would say he's also just like very candid where
- 27:29Speaker 5: it's like oh yeah, there was something going on, and
- 27:31Speaker 5: but we've had a couple of those things behind the
- 27:33Speaker 5: scenes and it's whatever, like oh the yeah, the ball
- 27:37Speaker 5: Boy where he said something then he clarified it like
- 27:39Speaker 5: he's just he's very who he is, and it's just like, yeah,
- 27:42Speaker 5: like the ball boy was being slow.
- 27:44Speaker 3: It is what it is.
- 27:45Speaker 5: Like I agree with him. I like what what he says.
- 27:47Speaker 5: So we're getting sent to kobe Ja references after beating
- 27:52Speaker 5: the Dodgers, right, which just happened. So it's like every
- 27:55Speaker 5: series we get something that relates to another sport or
- 27:59Speaker 5: or music or something else.
- 28:01Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't know how he does it, man, I mean,
- 28:03Speaker 6: like he does it every day, and I'm again, I'm
- 28:05Speaker 6: so used to it that like I don't even I
- 28:07Speaker 6: don't have anything specifically that comes out my mind, at
- 28:10Speaker 6: least anything I could say on TV.
- 28:14Speaker 3: But yeah, he's he's so good at it.
- 28:16Speaker 6: Like he has a way with words that's kind of hard,
- 28:18Speaker 6: hard to like explain, but he does a good job
- 28:22Speaker 6: like with that in terms of like being able to
- 28:23Speaker 6: communicate with the team, uh and even like going back
- 28:26Speaker 6: to college, like being able to motivate. So I think
- 28:29Speaker 6: it's kind of a gift he has and you know,
- 28:31Speaker 6: I'm glad I get to hear it every day.
- 28:34Speaker 5: Hey, question for you, because I think this relates to
- 28:37Speaker 5: what you've done so far in the big leagues in
- 28:39Speaker 5: terms of bringing energy and a lot of fun and
- 28:43Speaker 5: standing out right. We showed a couple of pictures of
- 28:45Speaker 5: the guys hanging with you in the clubhouse and you
- 28:47Speaker 5: get it all psyched up for games. Does some of
- 28:50Speaker 5: that come from like the college vibe of you know,
- 28:53Speaker 5: more energy, less kind of concerned about what's going on
- 28:56Speaker 5: and just being yourself and hoping that if you're a
- 28:59Speaker 5: genuine part of yourself, people like you and it will
- 29:02Speaker 5: motivate the team. So, you know, because Tony's I think
- 29:05Speaker 5: trying to do that and be like, hey, I'm going
- 29:07Speaker 5: to be myself and I'm coming from a different world.
- 29:10Speaker 5: I feel like you do that too by hitting the
- 29:12Speaker 5: right tome, like guys are excited to have Drew Gilbert
- 29:15Speaker 5: get called up and get the energy out on the field,
- 29:18Speaker 5: but also get fired up in the clubhouse together.
- 29:21Speaker 6: Sure, yeah, I think you know, like you want guys
- 29:25Speaker 6: like no matter if it's talking about me or you
- 29:27Speaker 6: know someone else, like you want guys that you want
- 29:29Speaker 6: to play with or be around on a day to
- 29:31Speaker 6: day basis, just because I mean, you guys, know, like
- 29:34Speaker 6: you spend ten hours at the field every single day,
- 29:37Speaker 6: you know, so you got to have a clubhouse of
- 29:41Speaker 6: like good people and good dudes that you want to
- 29:43Speaker 6: be around. Obviously, you know something that's a little crazy.
- 29:47Speaker 6: But I think you know, like you get in the
- 29:50Speaker 6: latter parts of the year, like August September, like it
- 29:52Speaker 6: can be tough or more of a grind, you know,
- 29:56Speaker 6: shown up every day. So I think the more you
- 29:58Speaker 6: can make it fun and kind of spice thing up,
- 30:01Speaker 6: you know, I think at the end of the day,
- 30:02Speaker 6: you're gonna have a better team. And if you've got
- 30:04Speaker 6: a group of guys that want to be around each
- 30:06Speaker 6: other and then you got some talent mix on there,
- 30:08Speaker 6: you could definitely have something there.
- 30:12Speaker 7: I think that's impressive, Drew, because you know, kind of
- 30:14Speaker 7: looking at your your trajectory so far as a professional
- 30:17Speaker 7: baseball player hasn't been that long yet. You find yourself
- 30:20Speaker 7: in your third organization, you know, but able to to
- 30:24Speaker 7: bring that energy and be yourself I know, and can
- 30:26Speaker 7: attest Matt Chapman helps with that. That dude's a maniac.
- 30:30Speaker 7: I'm sure he's taken you under his wing in a
- 30:32Speaker 7: couple of different ways and lets you be like that.
- 30:34Speaker 7: But how about you know, now in your third organization,
- 30:37Speaker 7: nice to have a familiar face like Tony, but like
- 30:39Speaker 7: you feel, I feel like you're able to you know,
- 30:41Speaker 7: does this one feel like home? Does this one feel
- 30:43Speaker 7: like obviously anything can happen? This one feel like, you know,
- 30:45Speaker 7: hopefully where you can put down some roots here for
- 30:47Speaker 7: a little bit.
- 30:49Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean that would that would be nice considering
- 30:51Speaker 6: you know, like you said, it's my third organization in
- 30:54Speaker 6: like four years, so you know, and yeah, I think
- 30:58Speaker 6: for sure, just you know, when you have your former
- 31:00Speaker 6: college coach, it almost does feel like that a little bit,
- 31:05Speaker 6: but you do understand like it's a business and anything
- 31:08Speaker 6: can happen. But I guess you know, the goal is
- 31:11Speaker 6: to you know, be good enough or make them like
- 31:14Speaker 6: you enough or they don't want to get rid of you.
- 31:16Speaker 3: So yeah, that'd be awesome.
- 31:17Speaker 6: And you know, I've enjoyed my time here at the Giants,
- 31:21Speaker 6: you know, also grateful for the time I spent with
- 31:23Speaker 6: the Mets and the Astros. Those two organizations are great
- 31:26Speaker 6: to me. And you know, I've been around a ton
- 31:28Speaker 6: of people that have helped me get to this point.
- 31:30Speaker 6: So you know, I'm excited to keep it rooming with
- 31:34Speaker 6: the giants and hopefully here for a while.
- 31:37Speaker 8: Definitely, definitely I want to go back to the other day.
- 31:40Speaker 8: Logan webbed and Rushing had that little thing going on,
- 31:44Speaker 8: and he threw a pitch Logan web hit him, and
- 31:47Speaker 8: then Rushing with the quie hey man, listen, I'll take
- 31:50Speaker 8: my base, you know, kind of tip this cap, little
- 31:52Speaker 8: angry man. What is your thoughts about that whole situation.
- 31:55Speaker 8: I know you're young to it. I'm sure you've seen
- 31:57Speaker 8: it in college, but it's different in the big leagues
- 31:59Speaker 8: a little bit, and now everything gets blown up a
- 32:01Speaker 8: little bit more, right.
- 32:03Speaker 6: Sure, yeah, you know, I'm I'm still new to this,
- 32:06Speaker 6: you know, the whole thing where uh you know, so
- 32:09Speaker 6: I don't even know what's going on half the time.
- 32:12Speaker 6: You know, dult Rushing, he's a good young player, you know.
- 32:14Speaker 6: I think he went to Louisville and I think we
- 32:16Speaker 6: were the same draft class. You know, obviously he's having
- 32:19Speaker 6: a hell of a year. So, uh, you know, I
- 32:23Speaker 6: don't I don't necessarily know what goes on, you know,
- 32:25Speaker 6: with a lot of those decisions or things. You know,
- 32:28Speaker 6: obviously Webby's a great teammate and you know he's always
- 32:30Speaker 6: standing up for the team.
- 32:33Speaker 3: And you know, I don't know. I don't again, I
- 32:36Speaker 3: have no idea what goes on with that stuff. Just
- 32:39Speaker 3: try to do my job in the outfield.
- 32:41Speaker 5: That's fair. Hey, is your energy level like this in
- 32:45Speaker 5: everything that you do? Like, you know, if you play
- 32:50Speaker 5: pick up basketball in the past, or just any kind
- 32:52Speaker 5: of game with your friends growing up, would you get
- 32:54Speaker 5: would you be the guy that's like super fired up
- 32:57Speaker 5: and always extra competitive, where you know, to be like
- 33:00Speaker 5: that and basically anything that involved winning.
- 33:04Speaker 6: Yeah, probably. I mean I think it's just kind of
- 33:07Speaker 6: who I am. I like to win, you know, I
- 33:10Speaker 6: like it. If it's something I get into, then for
- 33:12Speaker 6: sure I like to win.
- 33:14Speaker 3: So there you go.
- 33:15Speaker 6: There's been plenty of ping punk paddles that have been
- 33:18Speaker 6: broken or yes, five controllers that have been smashed in
- 33:21Speaker 6: the process. Maybe, but yeah, you know, it's just kind
- 33:24Speaker 6: of been who I am. I don't know who I
- 33:26Speaker 6: got it from, but it's just even since I was
- 33:30Speaker 6: really young, I've just been like this.
- 33:33Speaker 7: I don't want to make you talk anymore about the
- 33:35Speaker 7: rushing and web stuff. I know, young guy doesn't want
- 33:37Speaker 7: to go viral on X for saying anything. How about
- 33:42Speaker 7: how about just being a part of the rivalry. You know,
- 33:44Speaker 7: I was a Dodger and a Giant. I got to
- 33:46Speaker 7: see from both sides.
- 33:48Speaker 5: You know.
- 33:48Speaker 7: Now, you just had a pretty fun three game set
- 33:51Speaker 7: against them, won the series. You got another one coming
- 33:53Speaker 7: up in Dodger Stadium. How do you feel about the
- 33:55Speaker 7: rivalry and maybe how it compares to any that you've
- 33:58Speaker 7: had in college, jen and now on a big league level.
- 34:02Speaker 6: Yeah, it's uh, it's really cool, man, especially you know
- 34:05Speaker 6: these last three games, playing them at home with you know,
- 34:09Speaker 6: packed crowds. Uh, It's it's cool, especially when you have
- 34:13Speaker 6: a Dodgers team that's uh, you know, been doing what
- 34:16Speaker 6: they've been doing.
- 34:18Speaker 3: It just kind of heightens the environment, right, Uh.
- 34:21Speaker 6: And it's it's a good challenge for us, you know,
- 34:23Speaker 6: you know, you want to go against the best, and
- 34:25Speaker 6: I mean they, let's just call it a space bade.
- 34:27Speaker 6: They've been the best last two years, So you know,
- 34:30Speaker 6: it's cool. I think it's also a good test to
- 34:33Speaker 6: not I think you can always kind of hype yourself
- 34:36Speaker 6: up a little bit or psych yourself out a little
- 34:38Speaker 6: bit too much and put an opponent on a pedestal,
- 34:41Speaker 6: you know, more than you should, right Whereas it's the
- 34:43Speaker 6: big leagues and any anybody can beat anybody on any
- 34:46Speaker 6: given night. So I think it's it's a good test
- 34:48Speaker 6: for us, and you know, obviously we'll see them more
- 34:52Speaker 6: throughout the year, considering that they're in our division. But
- 34:55Speaker 6: it's an awesome rivalry and I'm looking forward to being
- 34:57Speaker 6: a part of it more.
- 34:59Speaker 5: Hey, Drew, last one for you? What do you do
- 35:01Speaker 5: for fun? What do you do if you have an
- 35:03Speaker 5: off day or in the off season once you're done
- 35:05Speaker 5: with the workouts and the whole deal, Like, what are
- 35:07Speaker 5: the hobbies?
- 35:09Speaker 7: Well?
- 35:10Speaker 6: Right now, I have a six month old he mini
- 35:13Speaker 6: bernadoodle puppy. His name is Bruce, and he is absolutely insane.
- 35:20Speaker 6: So he occupies about every single minute of my free time.
- 35:25Speaker 3: So that that's that's the only hobby I have right now.
- 35:27Speaker 6: I used to play a little Fortnite, maybe get on
- 35:30Speaker 6: video games, play some Call of Duty, but haven't really
- 35:32Speaker 6: been on recently. Just trying not to get my arm
- 35:35Speaker 6: ripped off by my little puppy.
- 35:37Speaker 5: That's fair, Yeah, tricked? Are you gonna bring tricks?
- 35:41Speaker 3: He knows.
- 35:42Speaker 6: He knows like the base like to sit right down,
- 35:45Speaker 6: roll over, Like he's pretty good in the leash and everything.
- 35:47Speaker 6: But he just has so much energy, like at all
- 35:50Speaker 6: times there's no napping, he doesn't want to nap, none
- 35:53Speaker 6: of that. Like it's it could be eleven thirty at
- 35:55Speaker 6: night and I get home in the field and I
- 35:57Speaker 6: mean he's he's ready to roll.
- 35:59Speaker 3: So yeah, it's a lot, it is.
- 36:03Speaker 4: Yeah, right, it's like a little kid, NonStop energy.
- 36:05Speaker 5: You have the kid kid will go be sleeping if
- 36:08Speaker 5: you get home at eleven thirty. This guy's rolling, right
- 36:11Speaker 5: Sometimes that's true. Well, Drew really enjoyed the combo. Great
- 36:16Speaker 5: having you on. Appreciate the time. Man, keep doing your thing.
- 36:18Speaker 2: Good luck.
- 36:19Speaker 3: All right, guys, I appreciate you having me
