- 0:08Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to TWO Shot Tuesday, another very
- 0:11special episode with us, as always, Barry T Nixon, and with
- 0:15us as often as I'd like to say that the movie guy, Rob Peetz.
- 0:19And when he's here, something big, something special is
- 0:22happening. Rob, how are you doing?
- 0:24I feel like shit. Nice.
- 0:26Great, good. Everything's a.
- 0:27Reference to the movie. Anything.
- 0:29No, I'm just all right. I just thought I'd go in the
- 0:31opposite direction. All right, it's Canada Day
- 0:33tomorrow. I I don't see how anyone could
- 0:35be not happy. Yeah, this weird mid exactly
- 0:39long weekend, which is. Yeah, could be.
- 0:41Further away from either weekend when it lands on a Wednesday
- 0:44that is the rarest, rarest form but I but.
- 0:48We're having a we're, we're having a Friday on a Wednesday.
- 0:50Yeah, it's kind of nice. It feels kind of nice to have.
- 0:52It is kind of nice. Very real and my.
- 0:54Workplace is actually granted off the rest of the week, so for
- 0:57me this is I'm off for the next 5 days motherfuckers.
- 0:59Me too. Me too buddy.
- 1:01Why not? Why not?
- 1:03Jay? What?
- 1:03You. You should do the same.
- 1:05I'll be there. I wish all you've been through.
- 1:07After all, exactly after all I've been through, I was
- 1:10fighting fires just before I jumped on here.
- 1:12I was explaining. But nobody needs to know about
- 1:14our work days, what we do. Need to charge a mess, right?
- 1:17Yeah, it. Is a real mess.
- 1:18What we do need to talk about is movies.
- 1:21But before we do, yes, there's a format on this show.
- 1:24I'm not sure if you're familiar with it.
- 1:26We do two shots of any liquid based substance that you would
- 1:30like. Yes, Barry, I want you to start
- 1:32us off. What do you what liquid based
- 1:34substance are you consuming? I would be very happy to start
- 1:36us off, Jay. And I'm starting off with some
- 1:38delicious Bushmills aged 12 years.
- 1:41Not ten, not 11 and a half, 12 full years.
- 1:45Wow. And I'm raising it to you
- 1:47fellas. Rob, what have you got over
- 1:48there? Well that's crazy.
- 1:50I'm going in the polar opposite direction.
- 1:52I'm going with a 750 millilitre jug of chocolate milk directly.
- 1:57Out of the carton. Nice.
- 1:59I have it in the fridge, I have it in the fridge, I do the same
- 2:02and I. Have.
- 2:03Yeah, I have it under the carton, often with protein
- 2:06powder. It's mid sized, yeah.
- 2:08Yeah, this is not. I like the protein powder, Jay.
- 2:10Yeah, this is closer to what Barry's got.
- 2:12This is the Jameson Black Barrel.
- 2:16A classic. A classic.
- 2:18I'm jealous. Gentlemen, cheers.
- 2:20To you. All right, let's go ahead and
- 2:25dive into this because we have just seen at the time of this
- 2:28recording a few days ago, Supergirl and yeah, Supergirl.
- 2:33I got to say excited to see it. Big surprise.
- 2:37Rob, I think you were kind of excited, maybe not as excited,
- 2:41but why don't you lead us off with your first impressions of
- 2:45Supergirl? Sure.
- 2:46I mean, so it's based on a graphic.
- 2:48Well, not a graphic novel, but but some some comics called The
- 2:51Woman of Tomorrow. Is it a graphic novel?
- 2:53I think it was. Was collected, but you're right,
- 2:55it was I think 4 issues. Yeah, which I've read and I
- 2:58really enjoyed. Hello, Ding Dong.
- 3:02I had to, I'm sorry. It's a collected works of four
- 3:06issues. That's amazing, Ki love that.
- 3:08From Tom King and Bilquis Ivy. Bilquis Ivy?
- 3:11Is that her name? Bilquis.
- 3:14Yeah. Tom King.
- 3:14Definitely the writer. Tom King wrote the wrote the
- 3:17story. Yeah, Yeah.
- 3:18So I was, I kind of knew that they weren't going to.
- 3:21They were going to use that as the template and that was about
- 3:24it. So I really love that story.
- 3:25I thought it was a really good story, had a great ending.
- 3:27And well, I'll say that the movie takes the basic outline of
- 3:31the story, which is kind of like the movie True Grit.
- 3:33It takes a a girl that's kind of seeking revenge and and asks
- 3:38Supergirl, who's in a bit of a state of not really feeling like
- 3:42she wants to be on earth. Kind of she's out there just
- 3:44partying in space, having fun, kind of avoiding
- 3:47responsibilities and kind of goes on the hunt for a guy
- 3:52called KREM who kills her, who kills his young girl's family.
- 3:56And in the process, he also, I guess kind of like screws up
- 4:00Crypto and makes Crypto go into a bit of a coma.
- 4:03Poor Crypto. First of all, can I just say
- 4:05that like, yeah, poor Crypto. He's been through the ringer
- 4:08now, I guess twice because in Superman he was kidnapped and he
- 4:11had the thing put around his face from from the mechanic and
- 4:15now something goes wrong in Supergirl.
- 4:16Like Crypto seems to be getting quite I, I, I hate to be getting
- 4:20all worked up about this, but it's quite a plot device.
- 4:22Well, Crypto. Worked up.
- 4:24Yeah, please do all. Right, sorry.
- 4:25This is much worse. And what happens to Crypto, and
- 4:28this one is far worse. So he's like literally knocking
- 4:31on death's door. So that's creates the urgency
- 4:34for the entire story of Supergirl trying to find
- 4:37basically a spoiler alert, a cure for her dog.
- 4:41That's essentially what this movie boils down to.
- 4:43It's like she's trying to save her dog.
- 4:45So it's like if she saves other. People too, that's great, but
- 4:47the the main point is saving crypto.
- 4:50So it's a movie version of the 1st 10 minutes of Indiana Jones
- 4:54in the Temple of Doom. No, it's a or of woman where
- 4:58he's. Kicking the kicking the antidote
- 4:59all around the room. Yeah.
- 5:00Pretty. Yeah, that's what it.
- 5:02Is that's a great thank you. Great callback.
- 5:04Yes, Yeah, I feel yeah, that's it.
- 5:07That's the movie. Yeah, it's just, I don't think
- 5:10that's the movie at all, to be honest with you.
- 5:12But yeah, it's kind of kind of similar, I suppose.
- 5:15Yeah, it's fun. But yeah, it just that just ends
- 5:17up being sort of what they took from Woman of Tomorrow.
- 5:19The rest of it is kind of completely different.
- 5:22Even the ending is completely different.
- 5:23That will obviously won't get into the ending, but right, you
- 5:27know, the story the the original comic had a pretty cool ending,
- 5:31actually like a really nice way of wrapping it all up.
- 5:33And this one was a little more, I don't even know how to
- 5:37describe it, brutal. It just didn't seem to really
- 5:39fit. I don't know why they didn't use
- 5:41the ending from the comics. But anyway, you know was the.
- 5:45Lobo in the comic, no. So yeah, because I know they
- 5:48want to put him in it, so they just.
- 5:49Yeah, they just. Kind of borrowed loosely from
- 5:51the comic I guess, like you said.
- 5:53I think it was an excuse to get Jason Momoa in his Lobo to
- 5:56introduce him into into the universe.
- 5:58He actually kind of I think, didn't he really?
- 6:01He really did not need to be in this movie.
- 6:02He was in the movie, he was OK when he was in the movie, he was
- 6:05he was fine. He's made to play this role for
- 6:07sure. That's.
- 6:08Kind of what he is, yeah, fine. They didn't really write much
- 6:11for he didn't have much to say. Yeah, there was underutilized.
- 6:15Under well, underutilized, but he didn't really even need to be
- 6:18there. So yeah, he kind of stole some
- 6:20fight scenes from Cara and from from Supergirl and stuff, which
- 6:23maybe he was like he was part of it, but he was almost like an
- 6:26observer through most of the movie, which was kind of weird.
- 6:29Why? Why bring him in if he's just
- 6:30going to observe what's happening and then move on to
- 6:33his next conquest or whatever? You know, like the Watcher.
- 6:35He's much like the Watcher, yeah.
- 6:37But yeah cuz I feel like he could have sustained his own
- 6:40movie like they go and give Clayface a movie like a Lobo is
- 6:44a better known character than that.
- 6:46Well, maybe this will be the reason to give him his own
- 6:49thing. Jay Like as a so like a soft
- 6:51intro. Yeah, they were hoping, but
- 6:54yeah, didn't most people didn't show up as they were expecting
- 6:57for Super. We'll get into that though, but
- 6:59strictly on the movie quality. So you were like Women of
- 7:02Tomorrow borrowed from it didn't, but didn't really stick
- 7:06to it all that much. They they just.
- 7:08Took the basic plot. Yeah, yeah, they really hyped it
- 7:10up because I think before the movie came out to I guess try
- 7:12and sell a lot of those comics. And it worked for Woman of
- 7:15Tomorrow in the collected edition format.
- 7:17Yeah, that was a big deal for for them, became quite a big
- 7:20seller. And I'm glad.
- 7:21I'm glad it's sold. I'm glad people are going to
- 7:22read it because it's a good read, you know?
- 7:24Yeah, yeah. I would love to tell you what
- 7:26the ending of that is, but I don't want to spoil it.
- 7:28Don't. Yeah, comic Barry, before we get
- 7:31into your take on the movie, I want to know how was the popcorn
- 7:36situation going in for you 2, gentlemen?
- 7:38Did you get the butter that you wanted?
- 7:40The topping, which is important. About it, There was a little
- 7:42drama here, there was a, there was a.
- 7:44Little bit of drama, one of the dispensers was completely sucked
- 7:47dry and when you go up to an dispenser that is sucked dry,
- 7:50you're just pressing the button and nothing's coming out.
- 7:52Jay, you look like a fucking asshole and I didn't enjoy that
- 7:55moment. Then I had to pivot to the the
- 7:58dispenser to my left. Thankfully it was like 3
- 8:01squeezes left. Jay 33 points a bad button and
- 8:05then that was stuck dry as well. No, you look like the guy that
- 8:09took it. All I was happy.
- 8:11And then and then he actually he went, he went into some
- 8:13hypothesis of how that butter is just there for like like 3
- 8:18months until I. Said I'm glad that it ran out
- 8:20because it indicates that they have to change it on the regular
- 8:24versus just having it sit there because we truly that we don't
- 8:27know what that is. We know what it is, it just
- 8:30makes it wet. It's salty, which is.
- 8:33Fine, it's butter. It's not butter.
- 8:35Oh, what's that? Butter?
- 8:36All right. Yeah, no.
- 8:37It's definitely not. I can't believe it's not not
- 8:39butter. That's what they would say.
- 8:41It's not doubly not butter. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:44Anyway, so, yeah, so I was that guy.
- 8:46I drained the the fake butter. We got into the theater.
- 8:49Rob always gets the same seats, beautiful seats.
- 8:52And no one right behind right beside us as well, which was
- 8:55nice. Well, yeah, the theater I would
- 8:57say was was 2/3 full on a Friday night.
- 8:59So all the. Middle.
- 9:02And the movies not doing well. The movie is, it's not doing
- 9:05well really. I don't know what that means.
- 9:08I don't know what that is. It got a lot of bad press.
- 9:10I don't think the movies anywhere near as bad as most
- 9:12people made it out to be, especially reviewers.
- 9:16I think we both had fun with it. I I kind of turned over to Barry
- 9:18at some point and said, I think in my head I'm thinking this is
- 9:21not really Woman of Tomorrow, but it's actually still fun.
- 9:24I'm still enjoying watching it all unravel.
- 9:27And so I said that to Barry and he was like, yeah, I'm feeling,
- 9:29I feel the same way. It's fun.
- 9:30And also not having any knowledge of the woman of
- 9:33tomorrow. I didn't know anything about
- 9:35this. This was all new material.
- 9:36It's a. Movie to you?
- 9:37Yeah, it was interesting. Just a movie to me.
- 9:40Yeah, exactly. Well, let's cheers that before
- 9:42we get into too far into your review, I'm going to, I'll jump
- 9:46in first and just say I've got some more Jamison Black Barrel.
- 9:49I think the movie guy's got more chocolate milk.
- 9:52Milk Boy and Ice and I'm sticking with the 12 year
- 9:55Bushmills. Cheers.
- 9:57I'm going two hands. OK, Barry, back to it.
- 10:02I want to hear. So you're coming in brand new.
- 10:04You don't know anything about the Woman of Tomorrow?
- 10:06Really. You don't know anything about
- 10:07Supergirl other than her movie from 1980.
- 10:11Two maybe or three, whatever that which I never saw, so.
- 10:14Yeah. So.
- 10:14I did explain the the fall of Argo's Argo to him to her her
- 10:18home city. Good.
- 10:20Argo City did. They not, I did kind of explain
- 10:22to him how that city kind of continues to live on, has the
- 10:26explosion of Krypton. But then they actually did show
- 10:29all that stuff and they did it pretty much verbatim.
- 10:32So that was good, yeah. OK.
- 10:34Well, Barry, your thoughts then take us through what's what was
- 10:37different for you with Supergirl versus Superman?
- 10:40Gender. Different gender it was.
- 10:42It was. Well, that's an obvious.
- 10:44Gender. Now, first of all, gender it.
- 10:47Was not a man, which I was already like, I was like, wait a
- 10:49minute, a female superhero. What are we talking about?
- 10:52What are we doing? Get past that.
- 10:54Yeah. Yeah.
- 10:54Thankfully, you know it didn't take long. 1956, yeah, you did
- 10:57it. Yeah, I don't know.
- 11:01She had, you know, a good amount of sass.
- 11:03There was some good jokes in this movie as well.
- 11:05And it did. I did read 1 review prior to the
- 11:08well, I didn't read it too in depth, but one of the comments
- 11:12that I came across was it's like Mad Max in space, which it kind
- 11:16of was like it did. These are it was a little more
- 11:18rough and tumble than, say, the squeaky clean Superman
- 11:23aesthetic. Now, it's cool that Superman
- 11:24does turn up briefly. You get to see a little bit of
- 11:27him, which is cool. But yeah, I don't know.
- 11:30I just, I thought it was the story moved along nicely.
- 11:33I was never bored. I didn't lean over to Rob at any
- 11:35point saying when is this going to be over?
- 11:38Yeah, it just, it held my attention.
- 11:41Got to say I. Thought it was fun.
- 11:43Yeah, it was an oddly dark movie, to be honest, for, for a
- 11:46Supergirl movie, it was oddly dark.
- 11:48There were a couple of moments in there where I was like, I'm a
- 11:50little surprised they did that. I'm a little surprised Lobo said
- 11:53that. I'm a little surprised.
- 11:55You know, I think at one point, and I don't want, I don't want
- 11:57to give it away. At one point, Lobo calls
- 11:59Supergirl a name and it's it's. Ma'am, it's interesting.
- 12:04Yes, absolutely not, ma'am. Ma'am, No, it wasn't right.
- 12:07OK, what? Were there any other
- 12:09interesting? I love the run by Barry.
- 12:12Were there any other interesting?
- 12:14Was that Supergirl? Was Supergirl in your?
- 12:16That was Supergirl just went by. Yeah, totally.
- 12:19Let's see, were there any, like in Superman, we had some some
- 12:23characters that we didn't really know.
- 12:24We had a Hawk girl, we had Mr. Terrific.
- 12:26Did they broaden much beyond Lobo?
- 12:28You can give it away or not. Any characters that we should
- 12:31then expect to see in other movies Maybe?
- 12:33No, OK. No, what was that girl that was
- 12:36along for the adventure? Rob?
- 12:38It's. An awesome.
- 12:39Who's this Ruthie? Yeah.
- 12:40Ruthie's from the original story, Ruthie in the original
- 12:43story, Ruthie really is sort of like really, really out to kill
- 12:47KREM. She really wants to kill KREM.
- 12:49That's all she thinks about. And not only that, the original
- 12:51story is also told from her perspective.
- 12:53So it kind of isn't that movie. That's not what this movie is.
- 12:56This movie is about Supergirl. It has Ruthie in it.
- 12:59Ruthie is a person that does want to seek revenge on KREM,
- 13:01but she's using Supergirl to do that.
- 13:04But in the in the comic, she's a lot more determined to kill
- 13:08KREM. So yeah, Ruthie is simply a
- 13:10character meant for this particular set of circumstances.
- 13:14That's right. I don't think you'll ever see
- 13:16her again. Yeah.
- 13:16OK, although that actress was was quite good, she was that was
- 13:20a fun character to watch. Yeah, yeah.
- 13:22All around I think all the acting was quite good.
- 13:23Which is for. Good.
- 13:24Yeah, the what was Creme the villain guy?
- 13:28Creme of yellow heels. I guess he was good, although
- 13:30he's he's a pretty normal looking guy in the comic, but in
- 13:33this they had him look a little more like the kind of thing like
- 13:35a Star Trek villain from the from like the late 90s Star
- 13:38Trek. Yeah, he had all those face
- 13:39piercings and whatever. Yeah.
- 13:41OK, so that was a bit much, but but overall he was he was funny.
- 13:45He actually was was a kind of a fun villain, little villain of
- 13:48the wiki. But but he every time, every
- 13:50time you saw him introduced, he would he would be eating some,
- 13:54he would like take something from whatever plate or whatever
- 13:57food was laying around. He would just pick it up and
- 14:00start eating it before he started.
- 14:01Yeah, kind of going on his thing about how how much of A dickhead
- 14:04he is. Right, Right.
- 14:05Yeah, That was that was pretty amusing.
- 14:07It was because it happened like 4 times.
- 14:09He'd be walking into a scene and he would just help himself to
- 14:12whatever was on offer. Like if someone was like trying
- 14:15to drink glass of milk, he would just take it and swing it back.
- 14:18It was like what is this guy's got a real problem with just
- 14:22like not being invited. He just helps himself to
- 14:24everything. Yeah, it was.
- 14:25That was pretty funny. That was one of more funny sort
- 14:27of kind of rebounding comedy bits.
- 14:30Before we get to the your star rating, and this is probably for
- 14:34you, Rob, want some analysis on this?
- 14:36I wanna sort of project out 'cause we've got Spiderman still
- 14:39to come. We've got Avengers Doomsday
- 14:41still to come. We've had a couple of big high
- 14:44profile duds in the last couple weeks.
- 14:46Masters of the Universe, an 80s property, Supergirl, which last
- 14:50time we saw her in the movie, an 80s property.
- 14:52It does this portend some difficult things for Spider Man
- 14:55or Avengers? Are they too big to fail?
- 14:58Do we? What do you think?
- 14:59What do you think? Superheroes?
- 15:01And I'm lumping Masters of the Universe into that, but that's
- 15:03it's not exactly superhero, but kind of in that same vein.
- 15:06Yeah, what do you? Think.
- 15:08I, I, I feel like Spider Man will always have its own
- 15:12audience. So I think the Spider Man will
- 15:13probably do fine. And I think that Avengers
- 15:16Doomsday, as long as they advertise it correctly and it is
- 15:19kind of as cool as it looks like it might be.
- 15:22It looks like they're going to be doing some pretty crazy
- 15:25resetting and doing a whole pile of wild stuff with these
- 15:28characters. I think it could be a big movie
- 15:30for Christmas, but it's hard to know obviously, because things
- 15:33are pretty soft right now in the superhero genre.
- 15:36I think part of the problem with that, like Superman did, did
- 15:38well, you know, I think part of the problem is that Supergirl
- 15:41isn't really a technically a top tier character.
- 15:45She's not Wonder Woman or something.
- 15:47And I'm not sure how many people even know much about Supergirl
- 15:50at all. So it's a bit of a chance, I
- 15:53think, that they took on this movie.
- 15:54Yeah, I know nothing about Supergirl until, yeah, seeing
- 15:57the movie. And wasn't and I think.
- 15:58They're gonna be taking it. Wasn't enough.
- 16:00Maybe. Yeah.
- 16:01Well. Wasn't enough in superhero to
- 16:02kind of sorry, in Superman, it wasn't enough to kind of whet
- 16:05your appetite. A lot of the people that I think
- 16:07they were counting on to go, oh, that looks kind of cool.
- 16:09Having her right right to headline a movie just doesn't
- 16:12seem to obviously just didn't pull.
- 16:14I honestly think if they would have stuck to the Woman of
- 16:16Tomorrow and really followed that storyline a little closer,
- 16:19especially the ending, They had all the parts there.
- 16:22They could have done the ending exactly as it was in the comic.
- 16:25It would have been a much more satisfying movie in the end.
- 16:27And maybe it would have pulled in some more audiences, I don't
- 16:29know, members, I don't know. I will say something like
- 16:31Clayface. I think that's up in the air.
- 16:33I'm looking forward to Clayface because, you know, I think it's
- 16:36it's probably a good time to do Clayface because people are
- 16:38really into horror right now and it's a body horror movie and
- 16:41it's being framed that way. It's being presented that way.
- 16:44It's not a Batman movie. It's a it's about an actor who's
- 16:47gone a little, a little kooky and he's willing to do whatever
- 16:50it takes. So I think I think that could
- 16:52maybe just draw like an audience after the fact.
- 16:54Like you may see people start coming the week after it goes,
- 16:58you know, comes out because of. Yeah.
- 16:59Just Jay. That should be a movie for you.
- 17:01I mean, you know, you're an actor who's willing to do
- 17:04anything. So I can see the.
- 17:06I can see a tie in there for sure.
- 17:08Is your Is your eyeball melting right now?
- 17:10I can see you at the theater, Jay.
- 17:12And potentially, yeah. And good news, good news for
- 17:15Clay, say it was made for with for $40 million instead of like
- 17:18$200 million like Supergirl. Yeah.
- 17:21Wow, we're coming up. With 200 million.
- 17:24Something like that, yeah. It's a big movie, yeah.
- 17:26Yeah, we're coming up on time. I want to get to star ratings.
- 17:29Barry, why don't you kick us off?
- 17:31What's your star rating on? Supergirl, I had a good time and
- 17:34like I said, I went in naked. I didn't know anything about
- 17:37this character. I knew nothing.
- 17:40And his penis was out. It was insane.
- 17:41It was out. Everything was out, I would say
- 17:434 out of five. I enjoyed it.
- 17:45I had a good time at the at the movies.
- 17:47Check it out. Supergirl is worth your hour.
- 17:49And what do you think it was? Rob what an hour 45?
- 17:53Just under 2 I think. Nice.
- 17:54Good runtime. It didn't overstay its welcome.
- 17:57And as you know, Jay, that's very.
- 17:58Important, very important. Rob, how about you star rating
- 18:01on Supergirl? It's a quick, clean movie.
- 18:03I think it it does what it has to do pretty quickly and and
- 18:06does it with some emotion. I definitely got a little weepy
- 18:09here and there because it was it was beautifully.
- 18:11Some of the moments were kind of well handled, the the
- 18:14destruction of Argo and all all that stuff like this or Krypton,
- 18:17I mean were really well put together, I think.
- 18:19And there was some thoughtful stuff in there that really is
- 18:22true to the characters. So that's kind of rare to see in
- 18:24in these movies, especially in the past.
- 18:26They wouldn't show that stuff or they would completely change it.
- 18:29So anyway, but I am a little disappointed.
- 18:31I did walk away a little disappointed that it wasn't as
- 18:33close to Woman of Tomorrow as I'd hoped it had been.
- 18:35And the ending was a little bit of a bummer.
- 18:37So I would I would give this a 3 1/2.
- 18:40OK, not so bad. So you know what?
- 18:42When we turn the Army of Two shot Tuesday audience on this
- 18:46movie, we may change its fate. We could potentially get this
- 18:49could have a massive second or third weekend.
- 18:52Opening. I think that's what's going to
- 18:53happen. Most likely run, don't walk to
- 18:57see Supergirl if you haven't already.
- 18:59There's plenty of seats available.
- 19:00Plenty of seats available. For you, bring chocolate milk,
- 19:03it's good. Yeah, not a lot of topping, so
- 19:05get there early for your popcorn topping if you Yeah.
- 19:08Berry drank it all. Yeah, yes, exactly, totally.
