- 0:11Hello friends. It is Sean here and it is a new
- 0:16week and I am so glad that you have decided to press play and
- 0:21invite me into your day so that you and I can continue reading
- 0:26through this book of Isaiah. We have been hearing about God
- 0:31talking about the future hope that there is for his nation,
- 0:35but all sorts of things are going to go down in the life of
- 0:38Judah and God in the next number of chapters, probably the next
- 0:4210 or so chapters, God pronounces through Isaiah His
- 0:45judgment on the other countries around them.
- 0:49The Babylonians are probably feeling pretty good about
- 0:51themselves now, but they should watch out because with God's
- 0:55judgment, the Persians will one day be on their doorstep.
- 0:59So what goes around comes around in the ancient world of Kingdom
- 1:03Toppling. But for today, let us put down
- 1:07all the things that are on our hearts at the beginning of the
- 1:10week as we come before God to hear His word through Isaiah as
- 1:15He speaks to the nations. Join me, friends.
- 1:19Let us read together Isaiah, Chapter 13.
- 1:32Isaiah, son of Amos, received this message concerning the
- 1:36destruction of Babylon. Raise a signal flag on a bare
- 1:41hilltop. Call up an army against Babylon.
- 1:44Wave your hand to encourage them as they March into the palaces
- 1:47of the high and mighty. I, the Lord, have dedicated
- 1:51these soldiers for this task. Yes, I have called mighty
- 1:56warriors to express my anger, and they will rejoice when I am
- 2:00exalted. Hear the noise on the mountains.
- 2:04Listen as the vast armies March. It is the noise and shouting of
- 2:09many nations. The Lord of Heaven's armies has
- 2:12called this army together. They come from distant
- 2:15countries, from beyond the farthest horizons.
- 2:19They are the Lord's weapons to carry out his anger.
- 2:23With them he will destroy the whole land, scream in terror.
- 2:28For the day of the Lord has arrived, the time for the
- 2:32Almighty to destroy. Every arm is paralyzed with
- 2:36fear, every heart melts, and people are terrified.
- 2:40Pangs of anguish grip them like those of a woman in labor.
- 2:45They look helplessly at one another, their faces aflame with
- 2:48fear. For see, the day of the Lord is
- 2:52coming, the terrible day of His fury and fierce anger.
- 2:57The land will be made desolate, and all the sinners destroyed
- 3:01with it. The heavens will be black above
- 3:04them. The stars will give no light,
- 3:07the sun will be dark when it rises, and the moon will provide
- 3:10no light. I, the Lord, will punish the
- 3:14world for its evil and the wicked for their sin.
- 3:18I will crush the arrogance of the proud and humble, the pride
- 3:21of the mighty. I will make people scarcer than
- 3:24gold, more rare than the fine gold of author.
- 3:29For I will shake the heavens. The earth will move from its
- 3:33place. When the Lord of Heaven's armies
- 3:35displays his wrath in the day of his fierce anger.
- 3:40Everyone in Babylon will run about like a hunted gazelle,
- 3:44like sheep without a shepherd. They will try to find their own
- 3:47people and flee to their own land.
- 3:50Anyone who was captured will be cut down, run through with a
- 3:53sword. Their little children will be
- 3:55dashed to death before their eyes.
- 3:58Their homes will be sacked and their wives will be raped.
- 4:02Look, I will stir up the Meads against Babylon.
- 4:05They cannot be tempted by silver or bribed with gold.
- 4:09The attacking armies will shoot down the young men with arrows.
- 4:14They will have no mercy on helpless babies and will show no
- 4:17compassion for children. Babylon, the most glorious of
- 4:21kingdoms, the flower of Chaldean pride, will be devastated like
- 4:27Sodom and Gomorrah when God destroys them.
- 4:30Babylon will never be inhabited again.
- 4:33It will remain empty for generation after generation.
- 4:37Nomads will refuse to camp there and shepherds will not bed down
- 4:41their sheep. Desert animals will move into
- 4:45the ruined city and the houses will be haunted by howling
- 4:48creatures. Owls will live among the ruins
- 4:52and wild goats will go there to dance.
- 4:54Hyenas will howl in its fortresses and jackals will make
- 4:58dens in its luxurious palaces. Babylon's days are numbered.
- 5:04It's time of destruction will soon arrive.
- 5:18God, you truly are almighty and in command and control of the
- 5:24whole world. The powers of the world believe
- 5:29that it's under our own steam that we do what we do.
- 5:32But here in this chapter we hear that you are behind the rising
- 5:37and falling of kingdoms and those who would count themselves
- 5:41as important in the pages of history are merely doing your
- 5:45work for your Kingdom and Lord. We don't understand the terrible
- 5:52atrocities and and how they would fit into part of your
- 5:56Kingdom. But as we hear these words,
- 5:59Lord, we know that you are good and you are a God of love and
- 6:05restoration and we praise you for that.
- 6:12Thank you that you are ultimately in control, and no
- 6:15matter what comes down in our lives around us, we know that
- 6:20you hold us and our destiny in your loving embrace, and we
- 6:25praise you for this. And we pray all of this in the
- 6:28name of Jesus. Amen.
