- 0:03Speaker 1: No one has all the answers, but when we ask
- 0:05Speaker 1: the right questions, we get a little closer, closer to truths,
- 0:11Speaker 1: closer to each other, even closer to ourselves. I'm journalist
- 0:16Speaker 1: Danielle Robe, and each week, my guests and I come
- 0:19Speaker 1: together to challenge the status quo and our own ways
- 0:22Speaker 1: of thinking by daring to ask what if, why not?
- 0:28Speaker 1: And who says? So? Come curious, dig deep, and join
- 0:33Speaker 1: the conversation. It's time to question everything. Hello, everybody. We
- 0:42Speaker 1: are a few weeks into the new year now, which
- 0:44Speaker 1: means that our intentions and our resolutions are kind of
- 0:49Speaker 1: being tested by reality. Right. Some of us are charging ahead,
- 0:53Speaker 1: and others of us are quietly asking, Okay, how do
- 0:58Speaker 1: I put this stuff into practice? How do I a
- 1:00Speaker 1: actually live this year differently? And my new year started
- 1:04Speaker 1: with strep throat, so I actually haven't put a lot
- 1:07Speaker 1: into practice yet. And if you're on sort of the
- 1:11Speaker 1: slow train with me, it's all good. Enter today's guest,
- 1:16Speaker 1: Gabby Reese. She's a former pro volleyball player, cultural trailblazer,
- 1:24Speaker 1: and someone who's built her life on one simple, disarming philosophy.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Go first, be the first to speak, the first to smile,
- 1:34Speaker 1: the first to step forward when everyone else is waiting
- 1:37Speaker 1: for the room to warm up, even be the first
- 1:40Speaker 1: to open the door for someone. When I first heard
- 1:43Speaker 1: Gabby talk about this, it cracks something open for me
- 1:46Speaker 1: because so many of the moments that changed my life
- 1:49Speaker 1: didn't really start with confidence. They started with movement, with
- 1:54Speaker 1: choosing to act before certainty ever ever showed up. And
- 1:58Speaker 1: Gabby's really lived this. Gabby is a fellow Capricorn, She's
- 2:03Speaker 1: obviously an Olympian, she's a health officionado, and she actually
- 2:09Speaker 1: was Nike's first female signature athlete to design the first
- 2:12Speaker 1: women's Nike shoe. She also has such a beautiful relationship
- 2:16Speaker 1: with her husband. I love when she talks about him.
- 2:19Speaker 1: And Gabby never waited for permission or perfect timing for
- 2:22Speaker 1: any of the beautiful things in her life. She just
- 2:25Speaker 1: trusted her instincts. There's a line in the episode where
- 2:29Speaker 1: she says something that I have not stopped thinking about
- 2:34Speaker 1: for over a year.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Your life will find you no matter what, and if
- 2:39Speaker 2: you just keep following your voice and your instinct, and
- 2:42Speaker 2: when the door's open, even if you're scared, if you
- 2:44Speaker 2: go through, your life's going to find you.
- 2:47Speaker 1: So Rick Rubin is a well known music producer, and
- 2:50Speaker 1: he's known for saying that you should not create for
- 2:52Speaker 1: an audience. You should create for you, and the audience
- 2:54Speaker 1: will come. And honestly, I think I do a bit
- 2:57Speaker 1: of both. I always think about if this will benefit
- 3:00Speaker 1: your life or not. I never air an episode just
- 3:03Speaker 1: solely for me, but oftentimes it seems like we're kind
- 3:06Speaker 1: of traveling through different challenges together. And so while I
- 3:09Speaker 1: was going to post a different episode this week, I
- 3:12Speaker 1: actually pulled an audible last minute because this reair of
- 3:16Speaker 1: Gabby Reese is what I needed to hear. I needed
- 3:20Speaker 1: to hear that if I keep following what's true and
- 3:22Speaker 1: honor my truth and the truth of who I am,
- 3:25Speaker 1: that what is meant for me will not miss me,
- 3:28Speaker 1: and the same goes for you. So the question we're
- 3:31Speaker 1: circling today is actually really simple but huge. Where are
- 3:35Speaker 1: we waiting and what might happen if we went first?
- 3:39Speaker 1: It's time to question everything with Gabby Reeves. Okay, so Gabby,
- 3:50Speaker 1: your daughter told you to stop talking with your TV personality.
- 3:53Speaker 2: You know, I did a lot of TV interview athletes,
- 3:56Speaker 2: and even within that I was I would say more myself,
- 3:59Speaker 2: but I think as a female, as somebody who's my
- 4:02Speaker 2: natural personality is maybe direct, I find myself also being like, Okay,
- 4:09Speaker 2: the message is more important, So how do we cater
- 4:12Speaker 2: to the message. So let's say, for example, if we're
- 4:14Speaker 2: trying to encourage people like, hey, take care of yourself
- 4:16Speaker 2: or whatever that is, and one of my daughters, my
- 4:19Speaker 2: middle we would shoot and she goes, Yet, in this
- 4:22Speaker 2: new world, in this new medium, don't talk with that
- 4:25Speaker 2: side of yourself. Just say it. And I think I oftentimes,
- 4:29Speaker 2: especially because let's say, social media are certain things. There's
- 4:31Speaker 2: not a lot of nuance, and I don't like to
- 4:34Speaker 2: get caught with my skirt up. I don't want to
- 4:37Speaker 2: get into a big hassle, and so one I used
- 4:40Speaker 2: it as a way to focus on the message too,
- 4:42Speaker 2: was a way to avoid getting into a bunch of
- 4:44Speaker 2: hoopla that I don't really want to. I tried to
- 4:47Speaker 2: pick my battles, you know. But then the other side
- 4:49Speaker 2: of that is sometimes, and I especially, I was talking
- 4:52Speaker 2: to a friend of mine who's a high powered businesswoman.
- 4:55Speaker 2: She's in her fifties, and she goes, yeah, and I
- 4:58Speaker 2: call it the fu fifties.
- 5:00Speaker 1: So I do a separate podcast with Hello Sunshine, and
- 5:03Speaker 1: we only interview women, and all of the women in
- 5:06Speaker 1: their fifties call it the FU fifties.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Now it's a thing, and I'm smack in the middle
- 5:10Speaker 2: of my fifties. So I think I've been saying f
- 5:12Speaker 2: you for a really long time. I just haven't said
- 5:15Speaker 2: it here because I sort of feel like everybody has
- 5:18Speaker 2: a role and a purpose, and I think it's also
- 5:21Speaker 2: knowing who you are and what you're selling, what your
- 5:24Speaker 2: message is. And part of my message is really meant
- 5:27Speaker 2: to be more positive because that's how I feel, that's
- 5:30Speaker 2: what I want to show up for. But within that
- 5:33Speaker 2: I could probably be a little harsher and a little
- 5:37Speaker 2: more direct, because at this point it's like, Hey, we're
- 5:40Speaker 2: running out of time. I'm running out of time, right.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Do you feel that way?
- 5:44Speaker 2: Well, it's just life, and this is the time in
- 5:46Speaker 2: life to try to put all of the lessons to
- 5:49Speaker 2: the best of your ability in play. And we live
- 5:51Speaker 2: in a world where people, you know, everything needs to
- 5:53Speaker 2: be fair, and that's just not how life is, that's
- 5:56Speaker 2: not how nature is. And so I think you can
- 5:59Speaker 2: be loving and.
- 6:01Speaker 1: I'm curious to know what some of those were for
- 6:03Speaker 1: you personally.
- 6:05Speaker 2: I think it's about designing your life, so your relationships,
- 6:10Speaker 2: your career, your physical self in a way that really
- 6:15Speaker 2: is true to you, in the way that you can sustain.
- 6:18Speaker 2: So if that's the kind of overarching umbrella goal, then
- 6:22Speaker 2: I always say, how do you back everything you do
- 6:25Speaker 2: into that to reflect that back so that in ten
- 6:28Speaker 2: years I also will be at a place that hopefully
- 6:32Speaker 2: I designed that I want instead of life pulled me around,
- 6:36Speaker 2: because it does work. Pulls you around, kids pull you
- 6:38Speaker 2: around if you're in a partnership, and then you arrive
- 6:41Speaker 2: at a place and you go, wait a second, this
- 6:43Speaker 2: isn't what I wanted for myself. And so I think
- 6:46Speaker 2: for younger women, if I could teach a college course,
- 6:49Speaker 2: especially like businesswomen, is however you want to do it
- 6:52Speaker 2: is the right way, but make sure it reflects who
- 6:55Speaker 2: you are, what you really think you want, because I
- 6:58Speaker 2: think a lot of us think I want to kick
- 7:00Speaker 2: ass and take up space and make my own money
- 7:03Speaker 2: and do all these things. But oh wait a second,
- 7:06Speaker 2: I might also maybe like to have a family, And
- 7:09Speaker 2: so really to get these twenty somethings to go as
- 7:13Speaker 2: you're structuring and navigating these courses, how is that all
- 7:17Speaker 2: playing into this bigger picture. It is very hard to do,
- 7:22Speaker 2: especially harder as the female, because when I'm at work,
- 7:26Speaker 2: I'm always still going to be thinking about my kids.
- 7:29Speaker 2: I tell my girls as a parent what I'm gunning for,
- 7:32Speaker 2: because it is really the number one job that you
- 7:34Speaker 2: kind of have one shot at. What are the things
- 7:37Speaker 2: I'm okay apologizing for pretty much for them, because whether
- 7:42Speaker 2: we'll go over it or not. I think something I
- 7:44Speaker 2: learned from my mother, who was young when she had
- 7:47Speaker 2: me and wasn't always around. I learned from her you
- 7:51Speaker 2: can always apologize, you can always make changes, but ultimately
- 7:54Speaker 2: try to craft your life in a way that you're
- 7:58Speaker 2: not going to have to not only apologize or something
- 8:00Speaker 2: you don't mind, but that you don't get the time back.
- 8:03Speaker 1: I've never thought about being pulled around in the way
- 8:07Speaker 1: you said, but I feel that, and so I'm glad
- 8:10Speaker 1: I heard that today.
- 8:11Speaker 2: And I know we do live in a time and
- 8:13Speaker 2: whether people like it or not, typically there's always exceptions.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Men and women are different. If we're going to work, right,
- 8:20Speaker 2: that's the masculine energy, let's call it that, and we
- 8:24Speaker 2: can't expect their experience to be the same. So how
- 8:28Speaker 2: do we if we want to play in that masculine space,
- 8:31Speaker 2: what does that look like for us?
- 8:33Speaker 1: Okay, so before we come back to present day, I
- 8:36Speaker 1: need to backtrack to twelve year old Gabby. You were
- 8:39Speaker 1: six feet tall at twelve years old?
- 8:41Speaker 2: Yes, I was six feet tall. I was down growing
- 8:44Speaker 2: at fifteen at six'.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Three you know what they line you up for graduation
- 8:48Speaker 1: at like tallest to. SHORTEST i was always the shortest
- 8:51Speaker 1: person in the. GLASS i cannot imagine what it was
- 8:54Speaker 1: like to be six feet tall at twelve years. Old
- 8:57Speaker 1: how did it develop or impact who you Bec.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I'm actually really, grateful AND i want to remind people
- 9:02Speaker 2: that anything that is one of our burdens that we
- 9:05Speaker 2: perceive as a, burden is one of our. Gifts it's
- 9:08Speaker 2: there to teach us whatever the lessons. ARE i grew
- 9:11Speaker 2: up in The, Caribbean SO i was in The. CARIBBEAN
- 9:13Speaker 2: i lived on an, island AND i looked physically. Different
- 9:18Speaker 2: but WHAT i learned right then was you're never going
- 9:21Speaker 2: to fit. In and there is a really practical side
- 9:24Speaker 2: of my. Personality so it was, like, Okay i'm not
- 9:26Speaker 2: going to bother and that really has played out throughout
- 9:29Speaker 2: my life where it's going back to that thing we're
- 9:32Speaker 2: talking about is playing by the rules in the game
- 9:34Speaker 2: you're playing that reflects, you AND i think when you
- 9:38Speaker 2: stop trying to fit, in what it asked you is,
- 9:41Speaker 2: Okay well then who AM? I i THINK i asked
- 9:43Speaker 2: that question a lot earlier in life because of being physically.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Different do you remember the first time you felt really
- 9:51Speaker 1: connected to? VOLLEYBALL i think it was more in.
- 9:55Speaker 2: COLLEGE i had a really good college, coach AND i
- 9:58Speaker 2: really learned how to play the game. GAME i was
- 10:00Speaker 2: late to the, game but, ultimately what volleyball gave me was, structure,
- 10:05Speaker 2: framework hard, work and, discipline WHICH i naturally. Have but
- 10:10Speaker 2: what it did it gave me this place to really
- 10:13Speaker 2: develop that and to sort of learn to earn something
- 10:16Speaker 2: that if you're not good enough you won't get to.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Play that you may come and play in a day
- 10:21Speaker 2: and play your, best and that may not be good
- 10:24Speaker 2: enough to. Win some of the might beat.
- 10:26Speaker 1: You it's a hard, lesson it.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Is it's a great. Lesson it gave me a, family
- 10:30Speaker 2: it gave me something to be a part, of and
- 10:32Speaker 2: it gave me a, place especially WHEN i was, younger
- 10:35Speaker 2: that OH i fit because all the other girls kind
- 10:36Speaker 2: of look like. THAT i am not unusual in the volleyball.
- 10:39Speaker 2: World and so that's HOW i connected really to.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Volleyball if you had to put a percentage on, it
- 10:46Speaker 1: how much is natural talent versus hard?
- 10:49Speaker 2: Work natural talent is when you're, young, right you get
- 10:52Speaker 2: on a, team you, play and then all of a
- 10:54Speaker 2: sudden you're talented enough to get through the next. Level
- 10:57Speaker 2: when you then get into the college level talent it still,
- 11:00Speaker 2: counts but then you see all the people who have work,
- 11:02Speaker 2: ethic they start to come on. Up and if you're
- 11:06Speaker 2: in a big, college and then if you play in the,
- 11:08Speaker 2: pros everyone is somewhat. Talented so it's really your ability
- 11:12Speaker 2: to deal with pressure and your ability to take information
- 11:16Speaker 2: in and translate it to, action and that is, CONNECTED
- 11:20Speaker 2: i think to work in.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Practice when you were, playing it didn't seem like there
- 11:24Speaker 1: were as many books about sports psychology and people talking
- 11:27Speaker 1: about the mental aspect of. It did you have any
- 11:30Speaker 1: tools that you came up with that helped you deal
- 11:34Speaker 1: with all the pressure because you were in pretty high stakes.
- 11:37Speaker 1: ENVIRONMENTS i needed to earn.
- 11:40Speaker 2: IT i was a person who, thought, well If i'm
- 11:44Speaker 2: going to deserve, This i'm going to have to work really.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Hard SO i leaned on work as a way to manage.
- 11:52Speaker 2: That my college, coach who's still my very dear, friend
- 11:55Speaker 2: i'ven't played for her since nineteen ninety. One, okay she'd
- 11:59Speaker 2: say to, Us, OKAY i kicked your butt all. Week
- 12:00Speaker 2: Now i'd go out and kick their. Butt BUT i
- 12:02Speaker 2: WISH i had learned, Sooner, like for, example it's okay
- 12:06Speaker 2: to want to. WIN i can still be a nice
- 12:08Speaker 2: and good person and want to shut you. Down and
- 12:12Speaker 2: that was SOMETHING i THINK i battled with for a
- 12:14Speaker 2: really long, time LIKE i want to win Because i've
- 12:16Speaker 2: been working so, hard but LIKE i don't really want
- 12:19Speaker 2: to hurt too many people's. Feelings and what you learn
- 12:22Speaker 2: is in, work it's a competitive. Environment you can still be,
- 12:25Speaker 2: ethical you don't have to step on people's. Heads but
- 12:28Speaker 2: it's okay to SAY i would like to do, That
- 12:31Speaker 2: i'd like to go, There i'd like to take ownership
- 12:33Speaker 2: of that. Space and it is impersonal and so REALLY
- 12:37Speaker 2: i think that was so, helpful was developing. That BUT
- 12:40Speaker 2: i needed that hard work to give myself the. Permission
- 12:44Speaker 2: that is.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Something because there's that statistic that people talk about over
- 12:47Speaker 1: the last two years THAT i think like ninety four
- 12:49Speaker 1: percent Of fortune five hundred female CEOs played. SPORTS i
- 12:54Speaker 1: think that's the.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Thing and it's learning how to lose and putting together
- 12:58Speaker 2: a strategy on learning from that and then moving, forward
- 13:03Speaker 2: and also learning to take constructive, criticism because coaches are
- 13:07Speaker 2: ultimately criticizing your weaknesses and kind of exploiting them and
- 13:12Speaker 2: getting you to work on, them and also reminding you
- 13:14Speaker 2: of your, strengths which is good, too and learning. TOO
- 13:18Speaker 2: i think something really important is the value of. Cooperation
- 13:21Speaker 2: if you AND i work, together chances are we're actually
- 13:23Speaker 2: going to be, better so not being threatened by other people's,
- 13:26Speaker 2: power strengths and. Skills and then the other side of
- 13:29Speaker 2: that is understanding that when someone is, saying, hey that's
- 13:33Speaker 2: not good enough or that's not, right that doesn't mean
- 13:36Speaker 2: you're not. Good that doesn't mean you still can't be,
- 13:39Speaker 2: successful but it also means, hey don't be afraid of those.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Things keep working on those things because that powers everything
- 13:45Speaker 2: instead of, like well that hurt my feelings or what
- 13:48Speaker 2: does that? Mean? NOW i will say, this it's also
- 13:51Speaker 2: having the right people criticizing, you the right mentor if
- 13:55Speaker 2: you're in a work, environment the right coach if you're
- 13:58Speaker 2: an athletic, environment so it isn't about taking input from
- 14:00Speaker 2: every idiot around. You so that's really important. Too and
- 14:03Speaker 2: that taught me, that, like, hey, yeah that's. GOOD i
- 14:06Speaker 2: appreciate your, opinion but guess, WHAT i don't Think i'm
- 14:08Speaker 2: actually going to take criticism or opinions from this particular.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Person were you a trash?
- 14:15Speaker 1: Talker not at?
- 14:16Speaker 2: All, None, no because that always bites you in the.
- 14:19Speaker 2: ASS i, mean certain people they feed on that fuel
- 14:21Speaker 2: and they can get into. COMBAT i was pretty stoic
- 14:25Speaker 2: AND i kept most of the energy on my side
- 14:27Speaker 2: of the. Court of, course there was occasions certain, girls
- 14:30Speaker 2: certain players were you, know you just got on each other's,
- 14:32Speaker 2: nerves and so of course if there was a play
- 14:34Speaker 2: that went in your favorite in that, moment you might
- 14:36Speaker 2: kind of be, like say, yay but then look right
- 14:39Speaker 2: at them kind of. THING i love that.
- 14:41Speaker 1: So much because WHEN i was watching your old, tape
- 14:44Speaker 1: you did keep the energy on your side of the.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Court but when you went for, it watch, Out.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Well everybody's going for. It they're all a bunch of,
- 14:51Speaker 2: beests these. Girls so, listen that's part of the. Job you,
- 14:55Speaker 2: Know this is WHAT i, say because a lot of
- 14:56Speaker 2: times people will, say, oh you're seems so grounded and.
- 14:59Speaker 2: HUMBLE i certainly am. GROUNDED i don't think i'm. Humble
- 15:02Speaker 2: WHAT i think IS i kind of know the law of,
- 15:07Speaker 2: life and So i'm not. HUMBLE i just don't need
- 15:09Speaker 2: to learn those lessons. AGAIN i don't need to be
- 15:12Speaker 2: slapped back into. Place and in, Fact i'm trying to
- 15:15Speaker 2: live my life in a way to pick up the cues.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Early oh you know, what course, correct adjust so THAT
- 15:22Speaker 2: i don't have to get really knocked on my butt to,
- 15:25Speaker 2: go oh. Okay so it's not That i'm. HUMBLE i
- 15:28Speaker 2: have a sense of how it. Works you're. Realistic, yeah
- 15:31Speaker 2: and when you get high and, MIGHTY i think you know,
- 15:34Speaker 2: life the, Universe god is, like, HUH i got something for.
- 15:38Speaker 2: You and there's a part of me that's pretty self,
- 15:40Speaker 2: protective and So i'm always looking to learn the lessons
- 15:44Speaker 2: As i'm.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Going did you ever Watch The office a little?
- 15:47Speaker 2: Bit?
- 15:47Speaker 1: Yeah of COURSE i didn't watch all of, it but
- 15:49Speaker 1: there's this one episode THAT i think about a lot
- 15:51Speaker 1: because At helm SAYS i wish there was a way
- 15:54Speaker 1: to know you're in the good old, days AND i
- 15:57Speaker 1: think oftentimes we miss the middle of the. Day we don't,
- 16:02Speaker 1: know because we don't know what life throws at. Us
- 16:04Speaker 1: when you think about those peak volleyball, days do you miss?
- 16:07Speaker 2: Them, yeah of, COURSE i MEAN i miss. COMPETING i miss,
- 16:10Speaker 2: playing you, know, sweaty, dirty yelling like, hard it, sucks it's.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Awesome this is a type of frequency that you're going
- 16:20Speaker 2: to be at only in those. Environments it's what's, expected
- 16:24Speaker 2: it's like how it's supposed to. Be SO i missed
- 16:25Speaker 2: that part AND i miss like this apex of learning
- 16:29Speaker 2: and practicing and executing that feels so. Good and you
- 16:33Speaker 2: can find that in other ways in your, life but
- 16:35Speaker 2: there's nothing kind of like. Sport it's so specific.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Because even if you're doing it in, business you're not.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Sweating there's a pureeness of sport where you, know with
- 16:46Speaker 2: the exception of like, love you don't have. That you're
- 16:48Speaker 2: not going to have that in business because in business
- 16:50Speaker 2: you're going to be treated, unfairly you're going to get
- 16:52Speaker 2: weird benefits that you didn't maybe. Earn and it's, timing it's,
- 16:56Speaker 2: markets it's your executive like it's a million Very and
- 17:00Speaker 2: in sport it's so stripped down and so. Simple that
- 17:04Speaker 2: PART i really.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Loved your eyes lit up talking about.
- 17:07Speaker 2: It, well, yeah because it's sort of like, going, okay
- 17:09Speaker 2: HERE i. Am there's a nakedness to that WHICH i
- 17:13Speaker 2: think empowers, us because you, Go i'm willing to be
- 17:17Speaker 2: vulnerable and risk.
- 17:18Speaker 1: Losing was there a period of time or a moment
- 17:22Speaker 1: that you remember when you doubted? Yourself?
- 17:25Speaker 2: Oh. Constantly anyone that says they don't live and walk with,
- 17:29Speaker 2: doubt they're either in. Denial i've learned to use doubt
- 17:34Speaker 2: as fuel and go, ooh why AM i scared of?
- 17:37Speaker 2: That or why does that make me? Uncomfortable or why
- 17:40Speaker 2: AM i doubting? Myself is that an old? Narrative is
- 17:42Speaker 2: that a childhood? NARRATIVE i use doubt as a companion
- 17:46Speaker 2: to assess myself as a.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Teacher if you can take me back to a time
- 17:51Speaker 1: that you felt, it even if it's, recent like business.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Or in, parenting it's. Constant AM i too easy going
- 17:58Speaker 2: on my? Kids SHOULD i have four them to do certain?
- 18:01Speaker 2: Things that's one THING i. Joke i'm, like, well Either
- 18:03Speaker 2: i'm a genius Or i'm an idiot on this. One we'll.
- 18:05Speaker 2: See and even in my own, career my youngest kid
- 18:08Speaker 2: is a senior in high, school and so Now i'm
- 18:10Speaker 2: sort of regathering all of my energy and, saying, Okay
- 18:14Speaker 2: i'm ready to go. Again so in my TWENTIES i
- 18:17Speaker 2: really was self. Focused it was about my, career my.
- 18:20Speaker 2: SPORTS i met my husband in my mid, twenties which
- 18:22Speaker 2: is sort of. Interesting and then all of a, sudden
- 18:25Speaker 2: the energy starts to you, know it leaks into other
- 18:27Speaker 2: places because that's what you want. Too and Now i'm
- 18:30Speaker 2: in a place Where i'm sort of recoiling my, energy
- 18:32Speaker 2: and so the doubt comes in, In AM i too?
- 18:36Speaker 2: Old AM i too? IRRELEVANT i, mean this is just
- 18:39Speaker 2: being really frank about it is the way THAT i do,
- 18:42Speaker 2: it or my message or the way my brain's hardwired
- 18:45Speaker 2: out a date and then you, go, okay Well i'll
- 18:47Speaker 2: move forward And i'll trust, myself But i'll also pay
- 18:50Speaker 2: attention and see what THINGS i could incorporate that are
- 18:54Speaker 2: still genuine to.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Me you're like a life, Anthropologist like you're just like,
- 19:00Speaker 1: collecting collecting and then figuring out what fits for you
- 19:03Speaker 1: and throwing the rest.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Away, yeah and honoring the Ones i'm going to throw.
- 19:07Speaker 2: OUT i have a. Sense but that's the other thing
- 19:09Speaker 2: to be careful. Of is not getting so locked into,
- 19:12Speaker 2: well this is WHO i, am because then we miss
- 19:15Speaker 2: the opportunity for changing. Growth so it's kind of using,
- 19:18Speaker 2: both but it's really SAYING i really admire that about that,
- 19:22Speaker 2: person But i'm not, them AND i don't do it that.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Way and sport teaches you that because you kind of
- 19:27Speaker 2: have a job and you, Go, god she does, that so,
- 19:29Speaker 2: WELL i don't do. That it's. Both it's collecting and,
- 19:32Speaker 2: leaving but it's still listening to the internal instincts and.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Whisper in your first, book you wrote everything a woman
- 19:52Speaker 1: does has an emotional. Component paying attention to my emotional
- 19:55Speaker 1: side without surrendering to it is one of the toughest
- 19:58Speaker 1: parts of playing professional. Sports i'm curious how your relationship
- 20:02Speaker 1: to your emotional side has changed since you wrote that
- 20:04Speaker 1: in nineteen ninety. Seven are you more emotional now or
- 20:07Speaker 1: less or just in tune with it?
- 20:09Speaker 2: Differently, well, okay, first let me preface by Saying i'm
- 20:12Speaker 2: probably not the most emotional person there. Is i'm very, analytical,
- 20:17Speaker 2: Right i'm not afraid to show my. Emotion it's just
- 20:20Speaker 2: not my actual natural.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Process like if you watch, movies if you watch you,
- 20:25Speaker 1: know step, Mom, yeah that movie kills. Me are you?
- 20:29Speaker 1: Crying and? STEPMOMS i mean, like IF.
- 20:30Speaker 2: I have my, Period i'm, RIGHT i don't know, see
- 20:33Speaker 2: or If i'm in an Airplane i'll cry all the. Time.
- 20:35Speaker 2: RIGHT i think it's because you're in fight or, flight
- 20:37Speaker 2: and so you're, like oh my, god the dog's still
- 20:39Speaker 2: at the train, station you, know waiting for the owner
- 20:41Speaker 2: who's never. Coming you. Know. YEAH i think the most
- 20:45Speaker 2: important way that it's shown up for me in these
- 20:47Speaker 2: years since then is in, business if you're in the,
- 20:52Speaker 2: role because these are just roles right where you are
- 20:56Speaker 2: having to be the boss and say it, straight get
- 20:58Speaker 2: rid of somebody to make a. CHANGE i have really
- 21:02Speaker 2: learned to not have to be aggravated to do, that
- 21:05Speaker 2: because Before i'd be, like, WELL i don't want to
- 21:06Speaker 2: hurt anyone's. FEELINGS i don't want to make, changes and
- 21:09Speaker 2: now it's, like, hey, listen something has to. HAPPEN i
- 21:13Speaker 2: can be, RESPECTFUL i can try to be, loving but
- 21:16Speaker 2: you still have to be direct and you're probably going
- 21:18Speaker 2: to say something that someone's not going to. Like and
- 21:22Speaker 2: so in That i've gotten way better at being okay
- 21:26Speaker 2: with somebody not liking Something i'm going to.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Say how DO i shed? THAT i feel like that's
- 21:30Speaker 1: my final. Frontier AND i hear it from so many
- 21:33Speaker 1: people that sit in this. Chair it's a big. Frontier
- 21:36Speaker 1: did you shed it or was it? Gradual it's been.
- 21:39Speaker 2: Gradual it's been gradual in a lot of, practice, practice
- 21:42Speaker 2: in my relationship, practice in my business, life practice with my.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Kids so it's the practice OF i need to say.
- 21:49Speaker 2: This so WHAT i do IS i check first, inside
- 21:53Speaker 2: AM i? Scared because Then i'm gonna me. Personally i'm
- 21:57Speaker 2: going to come out and be kind of aggressive because
- 21:59Speaker 2: that's WHAT i. DO i lean into things WHEN i get,
- 22:02Speaker 2: scared BUT i use force and. Aggression it's, like, okay
- 22:06Speaker 2: we'll calm down with. That so if you're, mad you usually.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Scared if you're feeling, aggressive usually. Scared so it's going
- 22:13Speaker 2: no the change this tests to. Happen WHAT i try
- 22:15Speaker 2: to do now is just, say are you coming from
- 22:18Speaker 2: a loving place that's pretty still and clear about what
- 22:23Speaker 2: all the goals? Are and then be okay with. That
- 22:26Speaker 2: and you know WHAT i say to people is don't
- 22:28Speaker 2: apologize if you don't answer your email in the first thirty,
- 22:31Speaker 2: seconds and don't end a conversation with if that's, okay
- 22:36Speaker 2: because it may not be and that's not what we're talking.
- 22:39Speaker 2: About if you're okay, now if it's an interpersonal, RELATIONSHIP
- 22:43Speaker 2: i might be, like, hey, Listen but if we're, talking
- 22:46Speaker 2: especially in the work, environment it's being, like this is
- 22:50Speaker 2: just part of the. Deal.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Okay in this, VEIN i need YOUR pov on. Something.
- 22:55Speaker 1: OKAY i come from The Gabby reese kind of hard
- 22:59Speaker 1: knock school of, thought like if you want, something you
- 23:01Speaker 1: push Through Simone biles in The. Olympics i'm going to
- 23:04Speaker 1: say something that's not going to be. Popular my first instinct,
- 23:08Speaker 1: was you're at The, olympics figure it. Out now is
- 23:12Speaker 1: not the, time like mind over. Matter ONCE i understood
- 23:15Speaker 1: what the twisties, WERE i understood that it was. DANGEROUS
- 23:19Speaker 1: i get. It and we don't have to pick her,
- 23:20Speaker 1: Specifically but the conversation of mental health in, sport where
- 23:24Speaker 1: do you. Stand are you hard knocks school all the
- 23:27Speaker 1: way or is there a middle?
- 23:29Speaker 2: Ground, well let's talk about The Simone biles thing for a,
- 23:31Speaker 2: second because what you don't maybe realize, Subconsciously i'm going
- 23:34Speaker 2: to take a stab at, it maybe BECAUSE i had
- 23:36Speaker 2: my own experience about. It Naomi osaka had just come
- 23:40Speaker 2: up prior to, that, right and she. Withdrew, now if
- 23:43Speaker 2: you get hit with a tennis, ball it's like, volleyball
- 23:45Speaker 2: it's like you're going to be. Okay so in that
- 23:48Speaker 2: CASE i might be, like, hey, listen you're a. Professional
- 23:50Speaker 2: you paid tens of millions of. Dollars so if you're
- 23:53Speaker 2: going to give all the money back to Your japanese
- 23:55Speaker 2: sponsors and say, Hey i'm taking a, Break i'd be, like, okay.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Cool but for, me it's, like you can't have the
- 24:00Speaker 2: one and not do the. Other, now in The Simone biles,
- 24:03Speaker 2: case because it's, dangerous that had a nuance that unless
- 24:08Speaker 2: you're in that situation where it's life and, death like
- 24:13Speaker 2: you break your, neck my husband does a sport that's very,
- 24:15Speaker 2: dangerous that might be a little, different and it might
- 24:18Speaker 2: be interesting that she was able to do that. Then
- 24:22Speaker 2: but it was strange because she'd already been a, winner
- 24:25Speaker 2: and it was, like, well you knew what you were
- 24:27Speaker 2: competing for and signing up, for but maybe this was
- 24:30Speaker 2: an unexpected. Variable in, general work is, hard sports is.
- 24:36Speaker 2: HARD i think you have to expect. That so MAYBE
- 24:40Speaker 2: i appreciate the conversation and parts of it are an.
- 24:43Speaker 1: OVERCORRECTION i Think i'm in line with. YOU i also
- 24:47Speaker 1: think it's interesting that oftentimes women are the ones that
- 24:50Speaker 1: open things up to a larger, conversation but we've only
- 24:54Speaker 1: really heard about it with women in. Sport we haven't
- 24:57Speaker 1: really heard about men talking about mental health and.
- 24:59Speaker 2: Sport and it definitely, exists, absolutely and by the, way
- 25:02Speaker 2: there's far more men playing. Sports the expectation is completely.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Different but this is WHERE i also think biology comes into.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Play you, know even women training so a lot of
- 25:12Speaker 2: times those female, athletes they train in certain, ways almost
- 25:15Speaker 2: harder than male. Athletes AND i always likened it, to,
- 25:19Speaker 2: hey If i'm going from me sitting here with you,
- 25:23Speaker 2: TOO i have to go. Compete the jump for me
- 25:26Speaker 2: sometimes is a much bigger chasm than a guy, going,
- 25:30Speaker 2: hey Cool, burrow what's up and then like now we're
- 25:33Speaker 2: going to go and award each. Other they can go like.
- 25:35Speaker 2: That that's WHY i always, say if you see female
- 25:37Speaker 2: athletes that have a lot of, brothers they make the
- 25:39Speaker 2: transition really. Quickly SO i think we're just talking about
- 25:46Speaker 2: different types of, people different, hormones, testosterone, right, like all
- 25:52Speaker 2: these things that come into. It where that's, why for,
- 25:56Speaker 2: Example we've just had all these fires IN la the
- 25:58Speaker 2: firemen go into the burning building or do the thing without,
- 26:01Speaker 2: questioning and a lot of, THAT i think is a
- 26:04Speaker 2: physiological and biological thing that everybody wants to. Ignore and
- 26:08Speaker 2: my husband has a joke that women are far more
- 26:11Speaker 2: valuable than, men right think about it in a certain,
- 26:15Speaker 2: way just for. Survival and so he's, like you can't
- 26:19Speaker 2: afford just to huck. Yourself he's like, us we can
- 26:22Speaker 2: go in there and do it, right and it's a beautiful.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Thing but it shows up also in. Sport why in
- 26:29Speaker 2: certain way guys are, like, yeah we just go AND
- 26:33Speaker 2: i think it's so great because it. Is it's just
- 26:35Speaker 2: a little more.
- 26:35Speaker 1: COMPLEX i wrote this down BECAUSE i Know i'm not
- 26:38Speaker 1: going to say it. Right so for, years women's beach
- 26:41Speaker 1: volleyball players were required to wear, bikinis but men were
- 26:45Speaker 1: wearing shorts AND t.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Shirts, well, yeah because a lot of times they have their,
- 26:49Speaker 2: number like we had it on our, tops so they
- 26:52Speaker 2: would have their one or, two so you knew which
- 26:54Speaker 2: country and which number player they. WERE i think that
- 26:58Speaker 2: rule has since. Changed brazil just won the and one
- 27:00Speaker 2: of the players was in.
- 27:01Speaker 1: Shorts so as of twenty twelve In, london women are
- 27:05Speaker 1: allowed to wear shorts and a tank. Top the shorts
- 27:08Speaker 1: are still pretty short that they have to.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Wear, actually the girl From brazil had longer. Shorts, really
- 27:14Speaker 2: let me be really overly realistic about. This, Yes so
- 27:18Speaker 2: the group probably a bunch of guys selling beach volleyball
- 27:21Speaker 2: trying to get into The. Olympics they looked at all
- 27:24Speaker 2: the things that were attractive about the sport and they, went,
- 27:27Speaker 2: oh pretty, ladies and so they, Went we're going to
- 27:30Speaker 2: pull that. Lever it's a low hanging, fruit is it?
- 27:32Speaker 2: Right probably, not but That's i'm sure what the thinking.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Was, WELL i was thinking, too LIKE i always asked the,
- 27:39Speaker 1: why And i'm, like, well it probably helped grow the
- 27:41Speaker 1: sports it, did.
- 27:42Speaker 2: And everyone can. Go women should just be able to,
- 27:45Speaker 2: perform of course they.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Should were you ever annoyed about?
- 27:48Speaker 2: It, well, see WHEN i, played you, know, INTERNATIONALLY i
- 27:51Speaker 2: wore the bathing. SUIT i was just more. UNCOMFORTABLE i
- 27:54Speaker 2: always WHEN i played in THE us were running tights
- 27:57Speaker 2: BECAUSE i liked the idea of not having to think
- 27:59Speaker 2: about it and pull my baby's out of my butt
- 28:01Speaker 2: and do all that. Stuff BUT i, thought, okay well
- 28:04Speaker 2: this is what we're, doing AND i wasn't spending a
- 28:07Speaker 2: whole lot of time getting upset about it because the
- 28:10Speaker 2: sport is so small and so, vulnerable it's so hard
- 28:14Speaker 2: to make a living at. THAT i, Thought, Okay i'm
- 28:17Speaker 2: going to participate in being part of. Something and once
- 28:20Speaker 2: you watch, it you're not Sitting they're, GOING, whoa she's.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Hot of course you're recognizing this is a world class
- 28:25Speaker 2: athlete who's, training AND i think that ends up transcending
- 28:29Speaker 2: that she's in a. Bikini like AM i supposed to
- 28:31Speaker 2: control how every, viewer what they, react think and, feel
- 28:35Speaker 2: and what they hold up is. Important. No having said, that,
- 28:39Speaker 2: Though i'm happy that it's, like, hey where what you're comfortable? Wearing?
- 28:43Speaker 1: Competing you've had such a close relationship with your body
- 28:47Speaker 1: from such a young age because of your. Athletics what's
- 28:50Speaker 1: your relationship with your body like?
- 28:52Speaker 2: NOW i have a really peaceful relationship with my. BODY
- 28:55Speaker 2: i wish my knees worked, better BUT i do the
- 28:57Speaker 2: THINGS i can do to control having a positive relationship
- 29:02Speaker 2: with my, body and THEN i just let the chips
- 29:04Speaker 2: fall where they Are BECAUSE i am getting, older that's
- 29:08Speaker 2: part of. Life BUT i eat, WELL i go to
- 29:10Speaker 2: BED i don't. DRINK i train very. Hard the work
- 29:13Speaker 2: enables me to have a freedom and also a level of.
- 29:18Speaker 2: ACCEPTANCE i think when we grind it, out it's because
- 29:21Speaker 2: we know we're not doing all we can. Do and
- 29:23Speaker 2: by the, WAY i could still do. MORE i could
- 29:25Speaker 2: still do.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Better SO i love watching videos of you And. Laird
- 29:29Speaker 1: you guys seem like you have a lot of fun,
- 29:31Speaker 1: together AND i know that you're both competitive. People does
- 29:35Speaker 1: the competition push you to do? Better you're shaking your.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Head don't compete with your, Partner but, like do you
- 29:42Speaker 1: guys compete physically at?
- 29:43Speaker 2: ALL i can't compete With. LARD i could try to
- 29:45Speaker 2: out Smart laird here and.
- 29:46Speaker 1: There, No but, Okay i'll give you an. Example my
- 29:48Speaker 1: mom is a big workout girl and she's in her,
- 29:52Speaker 1: sixties and WHEN i go home and i'm with, Her
- 29:55Speaker 1: i'm really inspired to work out Because i'm, LIKE i
- 29:58Speaker 1: can't believe she's doing. More push, me, LIKE i want
- 30:01Speaker 1: the best for. Her but we're in. Competition, no she's.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Inspired you do you inspire each?
- 30:06Speaker 2: Other, Yeah laird really inspires. Me he really, does because
- 30:11Speaker 2: he's walking his own path in the truest. Way and
- 30:14Speaker 2: even when he's in discomfort or, Whatever he's showing up
- 30:19Speaker 2: in all the, facets and SO i utilize him as
- 30:22Speaker 2: a great source of inspiration and. Fun and ALSO i
- 30:26Speaker 2: always SAY i tuck in a lot Behind. LAIRD i
- 30:28Speaker 2: draft Off laird's energy Because i'm very disciplined AND i can.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Go but he's actually even at a higher. Level and
- 30:36Speaker 2: so Sometimes i'm, like, oh who wants to deal with?
- 30:38Speaker 2: THIS i just took him behind, him AND i draft
- 30:41Speaker 2: off him on the days THAT i don't have. It
- 30:44Speaker 2: that's WHAT i would encourage people is be that for
- 30:47Speaker 2: everyone in your, life but also be surrounded by people
- 30:50Speaker 2: who are that for. You because if you want to ask,
- 30:54Speaker 2: me one of the biggest you, know the most powerful
- 30:57Speaker 2: levers and tools that we, have it's each other.
- 31:00Speaker 1: That's really beautiful and.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Powerful, well that's being on a team when you can
- 31:04Speaker 2: be better with someone, else when one in one can equal.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Three and you know that when you feel that harmony
- 31:10Speaker 2: and those energies coming together and, amplifying and you can
- 31:12Speaker 2: have that in a. Friendship you know this with your best.
- 31:15Speaker 2: GIRLFRIENDS i can even have this in moments with my,
- 31:18Speaker 2: children even Though i'm not looking for them to inspire.
- 31:21Speaker 2: Me BUT i can look at them and think she's
- 31:24Speaker 2: trying to do it in her. Life that's pretty. Great
- 31:27Speaker 2: so it's be. That but that's really more the. Goal
- 31:31Speaker 2: right When i'm going through my, Life i'm trying to be,
- 31:34Speaker 2: That like if you come across me at the grocery
- 31:36Speaker 2: store AND i, say, hey good. Morning my goal is
- 31:39Speaker 2: just to leave a place a little better than you
- 31:42Speaker 2: know WHEN i first got, there AND i find, that
- 31:46Speaker 2: then you attract those types of.
- 31:48Speaker 1: People well in that vein we met because of your
- 31:52Speaker 1: going first. PHILOSOPHY i read it In Tim ferriss's book
- 31:55Speaker 1: and it really changed my. Life, Gabby where did the
- 31:58Speaker 1: philosophy come?
- 31:59Speaker 2: From from being? Tall people hear me say go, first
- 32:02Speaker 2: and you'd think like it would be like cut someone
- 32:05Speaker 2: off on the, road get on the front of the,
- 32:06Speaker 2: line and go. First was developed from also reading lots
- 32:11Speaker 2: of things About i've said this quote a lot of.
- 32:14Speaker 2: Times In Natural Born, heroes there's a book it says
- 32:18Speaker 2: to be a true, warrior one must be. Compassionate and
- 32:22Speaker 2: my whole thing is truly to be as sort of
- 32:26Speaker 2: strong and badass AS i can. Be and WHAT i
- 32:29Speaker 2: know that means is that THEN i have to be
- 32:34Speaker 2: a great supporter EVERYWHERE i am in, life and that
- 32:38Speaker 2: could mean opening the door for, somebody saying hello first to.
- 32:42Speaker 2: Somebody so being six to three and a, female there's
- 32:45Speaker 2: an interesting PERMISSION i have to go into everybody's space
- 32:49Speaker 2: Because i'm a. Woman IF i was a six or three,
- 32:52Speaker 2: GUY i might be able to do it with other,
- 32:54Speaker 2: guys maybe not to. Women as a, Woman i'm allowed
- 32:57Speaker 2: to freely enter everyone's. Space so why WOULD i not
- 33:01Speaker 2: take advantage of my size and say, hey how are you?
- 33:05Speaker 2: Today and give people permission to be, open to be,
- 33:11Speaker 2: friendly to acknowledge each other because maybe they see me
- 33:14Speaker 2: and Think i'm not going to talk to. Her and
- 33:17Speaker 2: SO i learned that really. Early it first was a
- 33:19Speaker 2: tool to try to diffuse people and make them feel
- 33:22Speaker 2: comfortable and connect with, them and then you just, realize,
- 33:26Speaker 2: oh it's just a better way to.
- 33:27Speaker 1: LIVE i love that you named.
- 33:30Speaker 2: IT i didn't mean. To WHEN i can tell, You
- 33:33Speaker 2: tim was at my. HOUSE i was With lard and
- 33:35Speaker 2: my Friend brian, McKenzie and we were all sitting there
- 33:37Speaker 2: talking and when he asked the, QUESTION i thought about. It,
- 33:40Speaker 2: honestly what was the question that he?
- 33:42Speaker 1: Asked?
- 33:42Speaker 2: You? Remember, like if you had, one you, know, advice
- 33:46Speaker 2: AND i really thought about it AND i was, like you,
- 33:48Speaker 2: know that doesn't seem like a bad place to.
- 33:51Speaker 1: START i feel like it should catch wind on the,
- 33:54Speaker 1: internet LIKE i want people to make videos going. FIRST
- 33:57Speaker 1: i think it's contagious because you, know like if you're
- 34:00Speaker 1: in a. ROOM i don't know if you've felt, this
- 34:02Speaker 1: but especially IN, la people don't really talk as much
- 34:05Speaker 1: to each. Other they're standing alone having a drink or
- 34:09Speaker 1: on their, phone and if somebody takes the initiative to go,
- 34:13Speaker 1: first it breaks the ice for. Everybody it's a domino.
- 34:16Speaker 1: Effect it's so. Contagious it's very.
- 34:18Speaker 2: Easy to, do as hard as it. IS i have
- 34:21Speaker 2: a joke Now i've elaborated from go first. TOO i
- 34:24Speaker 2: bully everyone around me to be polite to. ME i
- 34:27Speaker 2: have no, problem and, WEIRDLY i even do weird. STUFF
- 34:29Speaker 2: i gently will put my hand on someone's, arm and
- 34:32Speaker 2: if there's really like a, Thing i'll even gently put
- 34:34Speaker 2: it on top of their, shoulder which, subtly also, though
- 34:37Speaker 2: is a dominance. Move it's, like, no we're gonna and
- 34:41Speaker 2: so that is a liberty afforded to me though because
- 34:44Speaker 2: of my, size.
- 34:46Speaker 1: Do you go first in your close relationships with your,
- 34:49Speaker 1: kids with your, husband with your. FRIENDS i, do BUT
- 34:52Speaker 1: i also don't need to as.
- 34:54Speaker 2: MUCH i, MEAN i live around a lot of people,
- 34:56Speaker 2: who whether you want them to or, not they're sort
- 34:59Speaker 2: of coming your, way and the laird is a very.
- 35:02Speaker 2: PRESENT i can get caught up in my thoughts and
- 35:05Speaker 2: lost in thoughts and planning and building and thinking and
- 35:09Speaker 2: details and layered is. Here so the other side of
- 35:14Speaker 2: that sometimes is really that reminder, of even if it's
- 35:18Speaker 2: for five, minutes don't be here and be, here be.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Here do you think you could pinpoint the greatest benefit
- 35:27Speaker 1: to making that shift in your life to going.
- 35:30Speaker 2: First we live in a really loud, world and it's
- 35:35Speaker 2: set up that we're supposed to be at each other's
- 35:37Speaker 2: throats because it's a really healthy distraction for all the
- 35:40Speaker 2: naughty players to do whatever it is that they're. Doing
- 35:44Speaker 2: and what you learn when you go first in your
- 35:46Speaker 2: day to day life is we're all pretty. Similar we
- 35:50Speaker 2: don't hate each. Other even when we're, different we Connect
- 35:54Speaker 2: and it's just a reminder to me about that there
- 35:58Speaker 2: is humanity. Everywhere you just have to participate and be
- 36:02Speaker 2: a part of. It and what that does is it allows. Me,
- 36:08Speaker 2: also besides that kind of faith and renewed, FAITH i
- 36:12Speaker 2: don't walk around really scared in my. Life you, Know
- 36:14Speaker 2: i'm not like freaked out by things or you have
- 36:16Speaker 2: a different opinion and it bothers. Me it's, like it's,
- 36:19Speaker 2: okay it's no. Problem it allows me not to get
- 36:22Speaker 2: swept up in the frenzy that seems to sort of
- 36:25Speaker 2: take in a hold of us.
- 36:26Speaker 1: Culturally speaking of going, first you were the first woman
- 36:31Speaker 1: to have A nike design. Deal you made a.
- 36:33Speaker 2: SHOE i, said you, KNOW i wanted to feel like
- 36:36Speaker 2: this When i'm, training AND i need, That AND i
- 36:38Speaker 2: even JOKED i have a very big. FOOT i used
- 36:40Speaker 2: to say to tinker and WHEN i look down at my,
- 36:42Speaker 2: FOOT i would like it to look. Smaller so he
- 36:45Speaker 2: made the lines a certain. Way because also training was
- 36:48Speaker 2: like an everyday thing in a, uniform and sometimes it's looked,
- 36:50Speaker 2: good feel. Good SO i would dress. Accordingly but sometimes
- 36:53Speaker 2: even looking at my foot and being Like i'm organized
- 36:56Speaker 2: and have the footwork and, listen it was great timing
- 36:59Speaker 2: AND i was at the place at the right.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Time what do you mean by?
- 37:02Speaker 2: That there's plenty of other female athletes before, me but
- 37:06Speaker 2: the market wasn't there yet my. Generation WHEN i, arrived,
- 37:10Speaker 2: Obviously nike did the numbers and was, like, oh this
- 37:13Speaker 2: is the time for. That SO i was in the
- 37:15Speaker 2: right place at the right.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Time do you have the shoes in your? House do
- 37:20Speaker 1: you have?
- 37:20Speaker 2: Extras they are in like a spare bedroom, CLOSET a few.
- 37:23Speaker 2: SKWS i think we did about four or five, SKUs you, know,
- 37:26Speaker 2: seasons SO i have probably a version of each of.
- 37:29Speaker 2: That but one THING i will say That i'm really
- 37:31Speaker 2: mindful of is that. Happened it was, great and there's
- 37:37Speaker 2: a lot more stuff to.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Do were your kids wear?
- 37:40Speaker 2: Them?
- 37:40Speaker 1: Ever that's kind of, cool you, know it's.
- 37:43Speaker 2: Interesting one THING i really want for my. KIDS i
- 37:45Speaker 2: just had this conversation with my middle. Daughter, man cut
- 37:48Speaker 2: your own path and make it big and. Wide don't
- 37:52Speaker 2: look at your, dad don't look at. Myself you're your
- 37:54Speaker 2: own person with your own whole thing ahead of. You
- 37:58Speaker 2: cut that path, wide do it your own. Way don't
- 38:01Speaker 2: worry about you know what we've. Done is that.
- 38:04Speaker 1: Something that you And lared talk about or talked about
- 38:06Speaker 1: even before having.
- 38:07Speaker 2: KIDS i, MEAN i think that's our value, system and
- 38:11Speaker 2: then it probably got reinforced once the girls were here
- 38:15Speaker 2: as just a living. Practice that's how we parent and less,
- 38:19Speaker 2: words more kind of acting that, way and, occasionally like
- 38:24Speaker 2: yesterday to my middle daughter, SPECIFICALLY i wrote her a
- 38:27Speaker 2: note and, Said, HEY i just want to remind, you
- 38:30Speaker 2: like you are a very, intelligent, talented powerful smart, person
- 38:37Speaker 2: cut your own, path because we all need. That the
- 38:40Speaker 2: world is a scary, place and it's maybe scarier certainly
- 38:44Speaker 2: than WHEN i was becoming an. Adult and so just
- 38:47Speaker 2: to keep reinforcing to trust yourself and to know that
- 38:52Speaker 2: the whispers that you have about yourself and your life
- 38:55Speaker 2: they should.
- 38:56Speaker 1: Be, honored because that's how we get there if we
- 38:59Speaker 1: can put your realism aside for one. Moment do you
- 39:03Speaker 1: think that your collab With nike paved the way for
- 39:07Speaker 1: female athlete? Collabs do you think it shifted things in the.
- 39:11Speaker 2: Market IF i get brass taxi about, it the fact
- 39:13Speaker 2: that this shoe sold well meant that the programs probably.
- 39:17Speaker 2: Expanded BUT i think that was going to happen. ANYWAY
- 39:20Speaker 2: i really, DO i genuinely. Do and you'd be surprised
- 39:24Speaker 2: how little a lot of women's athletics has expanded even
- 39:30Speaker 2: since my. Day you, Know Cheryl swoops had a shoe
- 39:33Speaker 2: right after. ME i think the success of that whole
- 39:36Speaker 2: program probably allowed. It but actually my hope is women's
- 39:39Speaker 2: athletics gets a lot more. Attention But i'm always interested
- 39:43Speaker 2: on how are these athletes making a? Living the joke
- 39:46Speaker 2: about it'll be good. Exposure i'm, like, listen you're not
- 39:49Speaker 2: going to pay your rent with, Exposure so get. Serious
- 39:52Speaker 2: what's your? Business you, know what's your? Salary how are
- 39:54Speaker 2: you making a? Living SO i find it even. Fascinating for,
- 39:57Speaker 2: example THE, wnba the players that were in college doing you,
- 40:01Speaker 2: know name image and likeness, deals we're making more money
- 40:05Speaker 2: in some ways than they were going to make than
- 40:07Speaker 2: when they turn pro because their salaries such now you
- 40:09Speaker 2: have Like Caitlin. Clark so there's these interesting things that we. See,
- 40:13Speaker 2: yes the attention is. Great What i'm really interested in is,
- 40:16Speaker 2: great how do we set up the business so that
- 40:18Speaker 2: these women can really make a healthy living for that
- 40:21Speaker 2: period of time that they're doing, Sports because you'd be
- 40:24Speaker 2: surprised what the average salary. Is SO i always look
- 40:27Speaker 2: at it past kind of the woof and be, like
- 40:30Speaker 2: how are they paying these? Athletes and then there's the
- 40:32Speaker 2: other realistic. Part how many you, know tickets are they
- 40:35Speaker 2: selling so because people, say, oh, well it's not fair
- 40:37Speaker 2: and the men get paid, this let's use THE, nba
- 40:40Speaker 2: the women get paid. That it's, like, Okay but if
- 40:42Speaker 2: we're going to be grown ups about it and look at,
- 40:43Speaker 2: it how much does this side? Earn how much does
- 40:46Speaker 2: that side? Earn so how do we grow this so
- 40:49Speaker 2: that these athletes can make a.
- 40:51Speaker 1: Living i've heard interesting debates around that as, well like
- 40:55Speaker 1: some of it is like chicken or the, Egg like
- 40:57Speaker 1: it took a while to prop up men's, basketball and
- 41:00Speaker 1: they have fun halftime shows and all the things that
- 41:03Speaker 1: make you want to attend a, game and we haven't
- 41:06Speaker 1: done that yet for women's. Basketball it feels like it's
- 41:09Speaker 1: just approaching it.
- 41:10Speaker 2: Is AND i can add other dimensions to that idea
- 41:13Speaker 2: which people don't maybe know. Fully so you can take
- 41:18Speaker 2: a male athlete and you can say gets this many
- 41:21Speaker 2: rebounds and scores this many points and this great for whatever.
- 41:24Speaker 2: Reason we can take a female. Athlete she can be
- 41:27Speaker 2: the best at her. Sport but somehow we still want to, know,
- 41:32Speaker 2: well what dress is she, wearing who is she? Dating
- 41:35Speaker 2: now she has a? Kid how is she juggling? Motherhood
- 41:37Speaker 2: AND i always, say instead of getting offended by, that
- 41:40Speaker 2: WHICH i never. WAS i just think that we're attracted
- 41:43Speaker 2: to women for different and various, reasons and we're going, like,
- 41:47Speaker 2: no who is? She and so one of the mistakes
- 41:50Speaker 2: we've made is that we don't tell enough stories about
- 41:53Speaker 2: the female. Athletes and they, say, no she should be
- 41:55Speaker 2: able to go on the court and play and win
- 41:57Speaker 2: and that should be. Enough, okay well how has that?
- 41:59Speaker 2: Worked or let's expand and. Go she has multi dimensional
- 42:04Speaker 2: as male athletes. Are but for whatever, reason, hey you
- 42:07Speaker 2: just get your, Rebounds we're. Good we might want to
- 42:10Speaker 2: know what car he. DRIVES i don't, know you know
- 42:12Speaker 2: WHAT i.
- 42:12Speaker 1: Mean but even if you think of the best male,
- 42:14Speaker 1: athletes we do care about the lore of it, all
- 42:17Speaker 1: like we want to know About Lebron james'.
- 42:19Speaker 2: Family but it's not the. Same it just isn't no matter,
- 42:21Speaker 2: what it's just not the. Same the leagues need to understand.
- 42:24Speaker 2: Storytelling we need to know who she is because then
- 42:29Speaker 2: the audience will get invested also in. Her DO i
- 42:32Speaker 2: appreciate her hard? Work DO i appreciate her? Skill of
- 42:34Speaker 2: COURSE i, Do but we're still marketing two different, products
- 42:38Speaker 2: and so how do we do that?
- 42:39Speaker 1: Better is there a business decision that you've made that
- 42:54Speaker 1: you feel particularly proud.
- 42:55Speaker 2: Of not really the fact That i've been willing to
- 43:00Speaker 2: fail and continue and succeed in business and try to
- 43:03Speaker 2: learn and be willing to raise my hand and SAY
- 43:05Speaker 2: i don't know what that? Means what's ebitda? Like help
- 43:07Speaker 2: me out and also have my value show up in my.
- 43:11Speaker 2: Companies it's not That i'm proud of. THAT i wouldn't
- 43:14Speaker 2: be able to go to bed at night consciously IF
- 43:16Speaker 2: i was compromising my values for the sake of. Business
- 43:20Speaker 2: but one THING i feel really fortunate is That i've
- 43:22Speaker 2: been able to do.
- 43:23Speaker 1: That you say that having a functioning body we take
- 43:26Speaker 1: care of should be one of our. JOBS i like
- 43:29Speaker 1: how you put that in a world that often treats
- 43:32Speaker 1: wellness as an indulgence or an. Option even what shaped
- 43:38Speaker 1: that mindset for?
- 43:38Speaker 2: YOU i think coming through, sport it's really. Simple let's
- 43:42Speaker 2: Say i've had a knee surgery WHILE i was, competing
- 43:45Speaker 2: and you can't get off the toilet by. Yourself let
- 43:47Speaker 2: me tell you what you learn real. Quick oh wait a,
- 43:50Speaker 2: SECOND i Think i'm grateful for my health AND i
- 43:53Speaker 2: need to get from here to there and right NOW
- 43:55Speaker 2: i have a knee THAT i just readid and IF
- 43:57Speaker 2: i had to run out of the, BUILDING i barely.
- 43:59Speaker 2: Could and so looking at it from a different point
- 44:02Speaker 2: of view of understanding that the gift of health is
- 44:06Speaker 2: it's hard to do anything else as people who get,
- 44:08Speaker 2: headaches it's hard to enjoy your, family it's hard to
- 44:11Speaker 2: be really good at your job if you don't feel.
- 44:14Speaker 2: Good and so for me it seems logical and going
- 44:17Speaker 2: back TO i don't need to learn the big. Lessons
- 44:20Speaker 2: it's something THAT i. Incorporate and as females were not,
- 44:23Speaker 2: TAUGHT i think men do a better job of, like,
- 44:25Speaker 2: hey that's, Fun i'm going to go do. That we
- 44:27Speaker 2: somehow it's, like, OH i have to earn, that or
- 44:29Speaker 2: why are you going to have? Fun it's, like what
- 44:31Speaker 2: do you think is? Fun why don't you go find
- 44:33Speaker 2: something that's fun and do. That and also learning That
- 44:37Speaker 2: i'm not being not as good as a mother or
- 44:41Speaker 2: wife or employee or boss IF i, say, oh and
- 44:45Speaker 2: by the, Way i'm going to take care of. Myself
- 44:49Speaker 2: having said, that women go get their nails, done they
- 44:52Speaker 2: go get their hair, done they clean their, cars they
- 44:55Speaker 2: get new, carpets they do all this. Stuff they'd rather
- 44:57Speaker 2: put a lot of things first and taking care of.
- 45:00Speaker 2: Themselves so, really we have the. Time we just have
- 45:04Speaker 2: to figure out that it is a part of our,
- 45:07Speaker 2: life not SOMETHING i do over here WHEN i have.
- 45:10Speaker 2: Time it's just part of the deal and consistency over.
- 45:14Speaker 2: Quantity if you, say WELL i only have great fifteen
- 45:17Speaker 2: Minutes i've had newborn, children it's Like i've had six
- 45:20Speaker 2: minute workouts with no. Equation it's just, like you do
- 45:23Speaker 2: what you can. Do but the thing, is no one's
- 45:25Speaker 2: going to come to you and, go you know, What
- 45:28Speaker 2: why don't you go take a? Walk my husband's not
- 45:30Speaker 2: going to come and go you know, what, Sweet i'll
- 45:31Speaker 2: take over all. Gain it's, like, no you have to
- 45:33Speaker 2: put the guardrails out and go to. Everybody, Hey i'm
- 45:36Speaker 2: taking thirty minutes unless something's on, fire don't bother. Me
- 45:41Speaker 2: and what it looks like when your kids are teenagers
- 45:43Speaker 2: versus new babies is different and is it hard to
- 45:47Speaker 2: fit it? In? Yes do you blow? It? Yes do
- 45:49Speaker 2: you miss? Days of? Course do you eat chocolate? Cake,
- 45:51Speaker 2: Sure but it's not about. That it's eighty percent of the,
- 45:54Speaker 2: time are you getting it? Done don't make excuses and
- 45:59Speaker 2: it'll work out.
- 46:00Speaker 1: How much of your philosophy is based on science versus.
- 46:03Speaker 1: Intuition you, KNOW i know.
- 46:04Speaker 2: So much of the science THAT i go, yeah because
- 46:07Speaker 2: you want to do some of the right. Things but
- 46:09Speaker 2: the whole goal of living is to be in a
- 46:13Speaker 2: deeper relationship with. Yourself how DO i, feel what DO i,
- 46:18Speaker 2: believe what DO i? Think what AM i? Seeing and
- 46:22Speaker 2: so when we farm it all, out sometimes we lose that.
- 46:25Speaker 2: Connection SO i really am deep into my. Connection BUT
- 46:29Speaker 2: i use science as a, reference, like, oh are these best?
- 46:31Speaker 2: Practices but you'll find that there's very few new things to.
- 46:35Speaker 2: Incorporate once you understand kind of how food, works how movement,
- 46:39Speaker 2: works how, sleep circadian, rhythms, sunlight how all these things,
- 46:42Speaker 2: work it doesn't really change that. Much and, again our,
- 46:46Speaker 2: devices you can put a neuralink chip in my, head
- 46:49Speaker 2: but pretty much before that, moment our biology is not.
- 46:53Speaker 1: Different your approach has always been about. Longevity from What
- 46:57Speaker 1: i've seen and heard you talk about any unconventional wellness
- 47:01Speaker 1: practices that you swear.
- 47:02Speaker 2: By and the bonuses in technology are things like real hyperbaric,
- 47:07Speaker 2: chambers real red, beds things like methylne. Blue there's these
- 47:11Speaker 2: little extra kind of things you can do that if
- 47:14Speaker 2: you have a good, practice these can support. You if
- 47:17Speaker 2: you don't do the, fundamentals it's just something to occupy,
- 47:20Speaker 2: yourself to make yourself think you're doing. Something it's still about.
- 47:24Speaker 1: Work is that why you guys Created Laired. Superfood it
- 47:28Speaker 1: feels like a Fundamental.
- 47:29Speaker 2: It's a happy accident number. One and the great thing
- 47:32Speaker 2: About Laired superfood is this a lot of people already drinking. Coffee?
- 47:35Speaker 2: Cool could you do something that you do every day
- 47:38Speaker 2: that supports? You and So Laired, superfood the, ingredients the
- 47:42Speaker 2: fact that it's fat and caffeine, together so you don't
- 47:44Speaker 2: go like this and like, that you feel your body
- 47:46Speaker 2: and your. Brain so there's some principles baked into the
- 47:49Speaker 2: company that would be, like you, know we put adaptogens in,
- 47:52Speaker 2: there so through time it has a systemic effect on
- 47:55Speaker 2: your overall health and. Wellbeing so the other side of
- 47:58Speaker 2: this Is i've learned that if we can find things
- 48:02Speaker 2: where we're not asking you to do one other, thing
- 48:05Speaker 2: what either can we take away that's keeping you from
- 48:08Speaker 2: getting your goals or what are you already doing that
- 48:10Speaker 2: you could do.
- 48:11Speaker 1: Better it's hard to change consumer, behavior so you have
- 48:14Speaker 1: to be.
- 48:14Speaker 2: ADDITIVE i think, so AND i Think laired in, particular
- 48:18Speaker 2: was only drinking coffee and then, realized oh, WAIT i
- 48:20Speaker 2: can use this practice as a way to put some
- 48:23Speaker 2: other stuff in this that for, him his goal was
- 48:26Speaker 2: NOW i can serve for five hours BECAUSE i use, fat,
- 48:28Speaker 2: which by the, way yak butter, tea which is an ancient.
- 48:31Speaker 2: Practice none of this is, new, right people were doing,
- 48:34Speaker 2: That so nobody's reinventing the. Wheel but it's sort of, saying, oh,
- 48:38Speaker 2: okay we see a lane, Here we've got an, opportunity
- 48:41Speaker 2: and we can bring these values into this. Company and
- 48:45Speaker 2: the timing is, right the consumers informed, enough they're, ready
- 48:48Speaker 2: and it's something me feel good.
- 48:49Speaker 1: About i'm excited to try. IT i did not know
- 48:52Speaker 1: that adding fat to caffeine helps you not.
- 48:55Speaker 2: Have, yeah you don't freak, out you don't get the.
- 48:57Speaker 2: Jitters So i'll give you a really quick tutory about.
- 48:59Speaker 2: COFFEE i didn't start drinking. Coffee tot was forty five
- 49:02Speaker 2: until we started this business ten years. AGO i like,
- 49:05Speaker 2: CAFFEINE i just didn't like to taste of. Coffee and
- 49:08Speaker 2: so when we created A Larry Super larry would be,
- 49:10Speaker 2: like try, this try. That so WHAT i do is
- 49:12Speaker 2: basically a couple shots of espresso in hot, chocolate pretty
- 49:15Speaker 2: much with. Fats, however WHAT i will say is when
- 49:18Speaker 2: people do drip, coffee that's like three shots of espresso
- 49:21Speaker 2: worth a. Caffeine so everybody thinks a shot has more,
- 49:25Speaker 2: caffeine it. Doesn't they think dark roast has more, caffeine it.
- 49:28Speaker 2: Doesn't medium roast has more. Caffeine so when something is
- 49:33Speaker 2: roasted more or drip sitting there, longer that's more. Coffee
- 49:37Speaker 2: so what happens you do black drip coffee that's, acidic
- 49:40Speaker 2: it's been, sitting you have no, Fat you're getting a stomach,
- 49:43Speaker 2: ache you're jacked, up you get the. Shakes so by
- 49:46Speaker 2: doing a dark roast or espresso in the, fat you
- 49:49Speaker 2: have a little less. Caffeine it probably is not as.
- 49:52Speaker 2: Acidic and then you put the fat and it binds
- 49:56Speaker 2: with the caffeine and it goes slower into your.
- 49:59Speaker 1: System what's your philosophy on having a?
- 50:01Speaker 2: Scale, oh a scale you away. Yourself, yeah it comes and.
- 50:05Speaker 2: GOES i use it as a, reference but this goes
- 50:08Speaker 2: back to how DO i? Feel how DO i look in?
- 50:10Speaker 2: There how DO i? Look how do my clothes? Feel
- 50:12Speaker 2: how's my? Energy. Levels how AM i? Sleeping this is first.
- 50:15Speaker 2: Principles now is it, like, oh, well why AM i
- 50:18Speaker 2: consistently gaining these extra? Pounds what's going? On is my stress?
- 50:21Speaker 2: High because by the way that'll put the weight, on
- 50:23Speaker 2: you could have the same. Practice you could be changing
- 50:26Speaker 2: age and you need to tweak something here and. There
- 50:29Speaker 2: so if you can use it as an objective, reference,
- 50:32Speaker 2: Fine if it's something that you use that just torments,
- 50:35Speaker 2: YOU i would say that torment is actually having a
- 50:38Speaker 2: negative impact on your, physiology that it's not worth. It
- 50:42Speaker 2: the other thing is people aren't honest with. Themselves even
- 50:45Speaker 2: when they, think, Oh i'm going to track What i'm,
- 50:46Speaker 2: eating they usually under report unless they're writing it down
- 50:49Speaker 2: twenty five percent of the amount of calories they're intaking
- 50:52Speaker 2: because they forgot, about oh that one little THING i
- 50:54Speaker 2: shoved in my mouth or things like. That so WHAT
- 50:56Speaker 2: i want to say to people IS i approach it
- 50:59Speaker 2: with both one hundred percent accountability and, grace because if
- 51:02Speaker 2: you don't have, grace you're just kicking your own. Ass
- 51:05Speaker 2: so you want to give yourself, grace but don't bullshit, yourself,
- 51:09Speaker 2: like be, honest be, Straight are you doing the? Work
- 51:12Speaker 2: are you eating the? Thing are you out with the
- 51:14Speaker 2: girls having? Martini it's, like come, ON i want to
- 51:16Speaker 2: look like. That it's, like do you want to? Really
- 51:18Speaker 2: do you want to do the?
- 51:19Speaker 1: Work do you talk to your girls like?
- 51:20Speaker 2: This, yes but way down in the. Conversation it's usually
- 51:26Speaker 2: pretty loving and, nurturing pretty, direct but from a loving.
- 51:29Speaker 2: Place and THEN i might get to a place WHERE i, go,
- 51:33Speaker 2: hey CAN i say something to you and not as
- 51:36Speaker 2: your mom but as a person like AND i try
- 51:38Speaker 2: to couch it in a way that they can then
- 51:40Speaker 2: explore that idea for.
- 51:41Speaker 1: Themselves my mom talks to me like she doesn't tweeting
- 51:45Speaker 1: it at.
- 51:46Speaker 2: All she. Doesn't, no it's.
- 51:47Speaker 1: INTERESTING i think it's a blessing and. Occurs, well it.
- 51:51Speaker 2: Just depends BECAUSE i have kind of such a direct
- 51:53Speaker 2: tone all the time. ALREADY i really try to keep
- 51:56Speaker 2: softening things BECAUSE i am their only, mom and SO
- 52:00Speaker 2: i want to be their.
- 52:01Speaker 1: Mom i've heard you talk about softening your. Edges oh,
- 52:05Speaker 1: YEAH i need.
- 52:06Speaker 2: To i'm getting better at sort of realizing like it's.
- 52:09Speaker 2: Okay one of my driving forces in my life is,
- 52:13Speaker 2: LIKE i would like to be a decent, person and
- 52:16Speaker 2: so that requires being kind and loving and just BECAUSE
- 52:20Speaker 2: i can take you, know the brute force and, like,
- 52:23Speaker 2: oh grind it, out doesn't mean everybody else is operating that.
- 52:26Speaker 2: Way and SO i try to take that into account
- 52:30Speaker 2: When i'm communicating with. People and you, know funny, Enough
- 52:33Speaker 2: i've even said SOMETIMES i think about this on my,
- 52:36Speaker 2: podcast Where i'm, like you, Know i'm not going to
- 52:38Speaker 2: tell you what to. Do i'll invite you all dose.
- 52:40Speaker 2: Stuff and, finally SOMETIMES i want to, say and by the,
- 52:42Speaker 2: WAY i don't care if you do it Because i'm doing. It,
- 52:46Speaker 2: like if you want to do it for, YOURSELF i
- 52:47Speaker 2: think it's. Great but WHAT i really feel inside is, like,
- 52:51Speaker 2: okay that's on. You SO i think part of me is, like,
- 52:55Speaker 2: Hey i'll be, Here i'll be with. You let's do it.
- 52:58Speaker 2: Together and then at a certain, point if you're not,
- 53:00Speaker 2: ready it's.
- 53:01Speaker 1: Cool did you like being a professional? Athlete are you
- 53:04Speaker 1: happy with the?
- 53:05Speaker 2: PATH i feel really. Fortunate you, know this is one
- 53:08Speaker 2: THING i want to remind. People your life will find
- 53:11Speaker 2: you no matter what if you just keep following your
- 53:15Speaker 2: voice and your, instinct and when the door's, open even
- 53:18Speaker 2: if you're, scared if you go, through your life's going
- 53:21Speaker 2: to find. You because if you said to me at,
- 53:23Speaker 2: fifteen as a kid from The, caribbean THAT i would
- 53:26Speaker 2: have gone and played, volleyball and as a college athlete
- 53:30Speaker 2: and a. Professional it was never in the. Cards NEVER
- 53:34Speaker 2: i should have worked at a gift. Shop that's probably
- 53:36Speaker 2: WHAT i thought was going to. HAPPEN i didn't have
- 53:38Speaker 2: an idea about having an opportunity to be in a
- 53:41Speaker 2: long marriage or be in a workspace WHERE i could
- 53:46Speaker 2: talk about SOMETHING i really love and believe. IN i, Thought,
- 53:49Speaker 2: okay we'll see what. Happens SO i think that's something
- 53:52Speaker 2: really important for, people no matter where you come, from
- 53:55Speaker 2: no matter where even who wronged you or what didn't
- 53:59Speaker 2: work out for. You if you're willing to, work if
- 54:02Speaker 2: you're willing to listen to your, voice if you're willing
- 54:04Speaker 2: to be honest with yourself and go through the doors
- 54:08Speaker 2: when you're, scared your life finds you in all the.
- 54:12Speaker 2: Ways your partner finds. You if that's what you, want
- 54:15Speaker 2: that's the. Thing you don't have to want that that
- 54:17Speaker 2: doesn't make us. Complete but if that's what you, want
- 54:20Speaker 2: it'll find.
- 54:21Speaker 1: You your life finds.
- 54:22Speaker 2: You it, does it finds. You it's there for. Us
- 54:26Speaker 2: we just have to trust and it is scary and.
- 54:28Speaker 2: Hard AND i can sit here with three daughters and
- 54:31Speaker 2: a husband and all this rhetoric of the resume behind,
- 54:34Speaker 2: me and AS i go one step in front of the,
- 54:36Speaker 2: other it's still, Like, okay that's what we're. Doing we're in,
- 54:41Speaker 2: school that's what we're doing down, here and we're loving each.
- 54:43Speaker 2: Other AND i think we make it really complicated when
- 54:46Speaker 2: you have a little kid and they're going from one
- 54:48Speaker 2: room to the next and they run like if they're
- 54:50Speaker 2: like two and a half, three and you're not worried
- 54:52Speaker 2: that they're about to eat, it, Right and when you
- 54:56Speaker 2: listen to, that or you sit at a table with
- 54:58Speaker 2: people you love and you into like laughter and food
- 55:02Speaker 2: and things like. That or you're going to bed at
- 55:05Speaker 2: night and everyone's in the house and everyone's safe and it's.
- 55:08Speaker 2: Good it's not much more than. That now we do
- 55:12Speaker 2: all these other things to entertain, us to challenge us
- 55:15Speaker 2: to have creative. Expression that's, Great but what life is
- 55:19Speaker 2: really about is so. Simple and if we can keep
- 55:23Speaker 2: those two things space for both of, them you, know
- 55:26Speaker 2: it's like a, tree right they say the roots go,
- 55:28Speaker 2: deep but why not how? High and why can the branches?
- 55:32Speaker 2: Go AND i really think that stay grounded and then
- 55:35Speaker 2: reach for whatever it is that you feel inspired to
- 55:38Speaker 2: reach for and be willing to kind of eat shit,
- 55:41Speaker 2: on like are you willing every day to stand up
- 55:45Speaker 2: and wake up for those relationships and that? Dream and
- 55:48Speaker 2: if you, are then go for. It that's. Good and
- 55:51Speaker 2: if you're, not if you're just doing it because someone
- 55:53Speaker 2: your parents think you, should or you have a boss or,
- 55:54Speaker 2: whatever it's not the way because even when it's, good
- 55:59Speaker 2: it's still.
- 56:00Speaker 1: Challenging and that was so. Beautiful thank you for.
- 56:03Speaker 2: That, well, yeah that's just you, know live five minutes
- 56:05Speaker 2: AND i think most people know THAT i.
- 56:07Speaker 1: Have some rapid fire for. You, okay has laired got
- 56:12Speaker 1: you into the? Ocean?
- 56:13Speaker 2: Oh, yeah my mother trained dolphins WHEN i was a.
- 56:16Speaker 2: Kid it's a weird, thing BUT i grew up in
- 56:18Speaker 2: The Virgin. Island but, Yes i've gone. Surfing laird's got
- 56:21Speaker 2: me in the. Ocean BUT i think the thing that
- 56:24Speaker 2: connects us is nature and water and island.
- 56:28Speaker 1: Mentality if you had five dollars to invest in your,
- 56:31Speaker 1: health what's a healthy decision you can?
- 56:33Speaker 2: Make, oh just save your money and go to bed.
- 56:35Speaker 2: Early you're not going to get anything for five.
- 56:37Speaker 1: Dollars how about fifty Bucks if you have.
- 56:40Speaker 2: Not trained and you don't know how to, train either
- 56:43Speaker 2: buy it online or hire somebody to teach you a
- 56:46Speaker 2: couple things so you get comfortable and you, know, OKAY
- 56:49Speaker 2: i can start.
- 56:49Speaker 1: There how about five thousand dollars for?
- 56:52Speaker 2: Me the money isn't going to get you where you
- 56:54Speaker 2: want to go unless you need to go to a
- 56:55Speaker 2: therapist and understand why you haven't done. It cheapest thing
- 56:59Speaker 2: every day you wake. Up first THING i used to,
- 57:02Speaker 2: say if you, said what's the? Order it's a nutrition movement,
- 57:05Speaker 2: community all these. Things, okay sunlight is, First so blue
- 57:11Speaker 2: light non native blue. Light so the blue light that
- 57:14Speaker 2: comes from our phones and our computers and all the
- 57:18Speaker 2: EMFs and all the LEDs that is hurting our health
- 57:21Speaker 2: and our spirit in a way that we don't. Understand
- 57:24Speaker 2: so if you can wake up every day and look at,
- 57:26Speaker 2: sunlight even if you live in a, city you set
- 57:29Speaker 2: your body. Up, okay your melatonin gets released through your,
- 57:32Speaker 2: eyeball tells your, body, hey in about fourteen, hours release your.
- 57:36Speaker 2: Melatonin it sets your circadian. Rhythm, sunlight don't snack so,
- 57:40Speaker 2: much shorten your eating window and try to move and
- 57:44Speaker 2: huff and. Puff that's WHAT i. Say twice a. Week
- 57:47Speaker 2: move in a way that you huff and.
- 57:48Speaker 1: Puff something you absolutely have no patience. For go.
- 57:52Speaker 2: OFF i just don't like the victim. Mentality if we
- 57:55Speaker 2: want to say it's not. Fair you, know there's an old,
- 57:57Speaker 2: saying if you want, fair go to the. Fairground life
- 58:01Speaker 2: is not. Fair i'm not smart enough to understand. Why
- 58:05Speaker 2: ALL i can do is control this right here and
- 58:06Speaker 2: go what are the Things i'm. Doing i'm, Saying i'm,
- 58:09Speaker 2: thinking And i'm believing THAT i can participate in making
- 58:13Speaker 2: this the way THAT i want. It AND i don't like,
- 58:16Speaker 2: Bullies so victim mentality and bullying in the sense of
- 58:22Speaker 2: real bullying because you can because that person won't fight. Back,
- 58:25Speaker 2: now if you're a bully and you pick another, Bully i'm,
- 58:27Speaker 2: down no. Problem those two things really tweak.
- 58:31Speaker 1: ME i love your. Podcast what's the first episode that
- 58:34Speaker 1: you would point someone?
- 58:35Speaker 2: To it just depends what you're interested, in BECAUSE i
- 58:38Speaker 2: have really sciencey people if you're into. THAT i have
- 58:41Speaker 2: a lot of mental health. People so if you want
- 58:42Speaker 2: to talk more about mental, HEALTH i have some big
- 58:45Speaker 2: muscle heady guys that talk about. Science so it's really
- 58:48Speaker 2: what you're interested. IN i have a lot of great.
- 58:50Speaker 2: Guests it's more about you, know people are drawn to
- 58:54Speaker 2: things in their life because they're wrestling. It and, so for,
- 58:58Speaker 2: example most mental health PEOPLE i talk, to they're still
- 59:01Speaker 2: trying to figure Out most relationship experts guess, what they're
- 59:04Speaker 2: trying to figure out. Relationships SO i think it's also
- 59:07Speaker 2: understanding the thing that we're intrigued in is the problem
- 59:10Speaker 2: we're still trying to.
- 59:11Speaker 1: SOLVE i just learned that. LESSON i had a therapist
- 59:15Speaker 1: who basically asked me my deepest. FHERE i came up with,
- 59:18Speaker 1: loneliness and she, goes, oh that's so interesting because you've
- 59:20Speaker 1: built a whole career out of. Connection which is the
- 59:23Speaker 1: antidote or the opposite what was? Yours it's a great.
- 59:27Speaker 2: QUESTION i think my thing has always been, like do
- 59:32Speaker 2: it really, well be really, good never separate because you're
- 59:36Speaker 2: a team, player. RIGHT i come from a, Team so pursue,
- 59:40Speaker 2: excellence grind all the, stuff but don't take too much,
- 59:43Speaker 2: space don't take too much. Air that's even interesting being
- 59:46Speaker 2: married To. LAIRED a lot of Times i'm happy to
- 59:49Speaker 2: Elevate laired and be. Behind SO i think for Me
- 59:51Speaker 2: it's more about kind of don't worry about, it follow
- 59:54Speaker 2: what you want to, do and don't govern it too much.
- 59:58Speaker 1: And quite literally take.
- 59:59Speaker 2: Ups, YEAH i Know i'm doing it, ALREADY i might
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: as well do it all the.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: Way one thing every woman should try.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: ONCE i just think as you get older as a,
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: woman you should try more than once to be. Silly
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: AND i don't mean drunk on A wednesday and a
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: girl's night. OUT i mean, like don't let it all bury,
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: you because it can the details of. Life AM i?
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: Perfect just be, silly be, playful and use your life's
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: experience to give you more, freedom not confine.
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: You what's a book you've read that changed your mind
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: or changed your life that you think everybody could.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: Read, Well i've read a lot of books that have
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: changed my mind about a lot of. Things one of
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: them was that was really, helpful especially navigating some things about,
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: parenting which then bled across to everything was a book
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: By Byron katie Called The. Work and she has four,
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: Questions is it? True CAN i know it to be?
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: True for? Sure who AM i WHEN i think those?
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: Thoughts and who WOULD i be without that? Belief AND
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: i think for all of, us this idea of the.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: Narrative do we live by our? Narratives and if we
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: can get out of that from time to? Time and
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: she talks about past futuring not doing. THAT i think
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: that was really a great starting point for. ME i
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: could apply that to my, business to my love, life
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: to my fitness, life to my relationship with my, children
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: and it's really.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: Liberating, hey last, question grab a card from The Question
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: everything card game whicheveryone calls you question.
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: Everything here you, go how would you describe yourself to a? Stranger,
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: oh my, gosh is that for? Real? Consistent so. Boring
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: i'll tell you one, thing, really and we'll end this with.
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: THIS i went and saw a guy recently and he
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: said to, Me, gabby you know you've been using your
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: legs for. Everything up the, hill, grind, step, stop, Grind he,
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: goes why don't you try using your? Wings AND i
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: think sometimes we work so hard we get mired in the.
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: Details we're trying to show up for, Everybody but sometimes
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: if we can give ourselves permission to let.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: It thank you for, that thank you for joining, us
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: thank you for having. Me, okay you know what time it.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: Is today's a good day to have a good. Day
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: i'll see you next. Week
