- 0:03Speaker 1: Hi, get everybody. I'm Dan Horde and thanks for downloading
- 0:06Speaker 1: the Bengals Booth Podcast, the Just around the Corner to
- 0:10Speaker 1: the Light of Day. Addition, as Joe Burrow's NFL regular
- 0:15Speaker 1: season debut is just around the corner, it's roughly two
- 0:19Speaker 1: weeks away. Coming up a comprehensive look and listen at
- 0:24Speaker 1: what Bengals players and coaches have to say about the
- 0:27Speaker 1: rookie quarterback. Then Dave Lappham joins me for nearly forty
- 0:31Speaker 1: minutes to discuss a wide variety of topics, including the
- 0:35Speaker 1: offensive line, the rookie linebackers, and whether Aj Green should
- 0:40Speaker 1: be covered in bubble wrap and kept on the sideline
- 0:43Speaker 1: until the season begins on September thirteenth. The Bengals Booth
- 0:47Speaker 1: Podcast is presented by Prime Sport, the official fan, travel
- 0:51Speaker 1: and hospitality partner of the Cincinnati Bengals. And here's a
- 0:54Speaker 1: quick reminder that you can have the latest edition of
- 0:57Speaker 1: this podcast delivered right to your own tablet or computer
- 1:01Speaker 1: by subscribing on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, Spotify, or pod Bean.
- 1:06Speaker 1: It's the greatest thing since the letter pad app. Do
- 1:11Speaker 1: you need something on your phone to kill a little time?
- 1:14Speaker 1: If you're stuck waiting for something or someone, I recommend
- 1:18Speaker 1: letter Pad. It's a challenging game in which you have
- 1:21Speaker 1: to find hidden words. Here's how it works. You start
- 1:25Speaker 1: with nine letters and have to find the words that
- 1:28Speaker 1: relate to a specific topic. The longer you play, the
- 1:32Speaker 1: harder it gets. So test your brain with letter Pad.
- 1:36Speaker 1: It's free and it's fun. Now let's get to football.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Under normal circumstances, during training camp, the locker room would
- 1:44Speaker 1: be open for about an hour every day, giving reporters
- 1:48Speaker 1: the opportunity to interview the players. That's not the case
- 1:52Speaker 1: this year due to the coronavirus, except for the one
- 1:55Speaker 1: on one interviews that I've been doing for this podcast.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Nearly every player interview who has been a zoom call
- 2:01Speaker 1: with all of the local media. At some point in
- 2:04Speaker 1: those zoom interviews, the subject will be asked about Joe Burrow,
- 2:08Speaker 1: and I thought it would be illuminating to pick out
- 2:10Speaker 1: some of the most interesting responses. We start with von Bell,
- 2:15Speaker 1: who has known Joe Burrow since twenty fifteen, when the
- 2:18Speaker 1: safety was a junior at Ohio State and the quarterback
- 2:21Speaker 1: was an incoming freshman that year. Burrow would occasionally practice
- 2:26Speaker 1: against the starting defense with no protective jersey, and Bell says,
- 2:31Speaker 1: he's come a long way since. I think you weren't
- 2:33Speaker 1: even sliding back there, you like, he's now he was
- 2:35Speaker 1: trying to do the truck stick, but now you know,
- 2:40Speaker 1: he's progressing the field way better. He knows what the
- 2:44Speaker 1: defense had given him, he knows what he can take.
- 2:46Speaker 1: He knows when to take the shot, he knows when
- 2:49Speaker 1: not to. Sam Hubbard was one year ahead of Burrow
- 2:51Speaker 1: at OSU, and the two became close friends as Buckeyes.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Hubbard says that winning a national championship and the Heisman
- 2:58Speaker 1: Trophy haven't gone on to Burrow's head. I think that's
- 3:02Speaker 1: one of the most impressive things about him is he
- 3:04Speaker 1: hasn't changed at all. He's got the same mentality as
- 3:07Speaker 1: he was a third string, you know, backup at Ohio
- 3:12Speaker 1: State as a freshman, still fighting every day to you know,
- 3:16Speaker 1: get on the field and make his name known. And
- 3:18Speaker 1: he's takes that mentality and you know, the level headedness
- 3:22Speaker 1: of where he's been to you know, to where he's
- 3:25Speaker 1: at now. It became obvious toward the end of last
- 3:28Speaker 1: season that the LSU quarterback was almost certainly going to
- 3:31Speaker 1: be selected number one overall in this year's draft. That
- 3:35Speaker 1: meant Bengals wide receivers like John Ross were able to
- 3:39Speaker 1: watch burrows record setting performances in the College Football Playoff
- 3:43Speaker 1: knowing he was likely to be their next quarterback. That
- 3:46Speaker 1: was definitely the biggest story. Every time you're watching the games,
- 3:48Speaker 1: it's like, Joe Burrow has three hundred yards, twelve completions
- 3:52Speaker 1: that have time, you know, four or five touchdowns and
- 3:54Speaker 1: these are playoff games, you know, and it's like that's crazy,
- 3:57Speaker 1: you know. And just getting to work out with him
- 4:00Speaker 1: in California before he was dragging and to see him now,
- 4:02Speaker 1: it's like, it's good to see how how well he
- 4:05Speaker 1: works the offense and how good he is where there's
- 4:07Speaker 1: twenty fourth birthday coming up in December. Burrow is actually
- 4:10Speaker 1: older than nineteen players on the Bengals roster, including Jesse
- 4:15Speaker 1: Bates and Auden Tate. Here are the two of them
- 4:19Speaker 1: on their new QB. You can just feel his presence
- 4:21Speaker 1: in the room. You got that swagger about itself. You know,
- 4:26Speaker 1: he's young kids still. You know, he got a lot
- 4:28Speaker 1: of proof. He has a lot to prove. You know.
- 4:31Speaker 1: I was talking to my mom the other day and
- 4:33Speaker 1: he's talking. She was talking about an interview he did
- 4:36Speaker 1: or something like that about not being nervous. Have you
- 4:38Speaker 1: guys ever seen him nervous? And I thought that was
- 4:41Speaker 1: very funny, awesome that I have that type of He
- 4:44Speaker 1: has that type of confidence in itself. So yeah, I
- 4:47Speaker 1: feel really good about Joe. He's been moving me around
- 4:50Speaker 1: in the middle of field a little bit more than
- 4:53Speaker 1: a lot of quarterbacks that have been experienced in this league.
- 4:55Speaker 1: So um, you guys can expect a lot of good
- 4:58Speaker 1: things coming out of Joe this year. Just like his
- 5:01Speaker 1: natural swagger, you know, how you walk around and stuff
- 5:03Speaker 1: like that, How he approached the huddle, how he comes
- 5:05Speaker 1: into the huddle. You know, you don't come in like
- 5:06Speaker 1: a rookie. You come in almost like a vet. Like
- 5:08Speaker 1: he's been number four, so you know, just that calmness
- 5:11Speaker 1: that he has, you know, it's just everybody can feel it,
- 5:13Speaker 1: so we'll make everybody else. The scouting report on Burrow
- 5:16Speaker 1: coming out of LSU is that he threw the ball
- 5:18Speaker 1: with great timing and accuracy, but didn't necessarily have a
- 5:22Speaker 1: rocket for a throwing arm. Here's the player drafted in
- 5:25Speaker 1: the second round to be one of his primary targets
- 5:28Speaker 1: in the years to come. Tee Higgins. The first time
- 5:31Speaker 1: he threw the ball, he threw a bullet in. You know,
- 5:34Speaker 1: it shocked me, but I called it. He throws he
- 5:37Speaker 1: throws great balls, always where they need to be. He
- 5:41Speaker 1: rarely throw that boss rarely, but it does happen. In
- 5:45Speaker 1: one of the Bengals first practices in pads, Burrow was
- 5:49Speaker 1: intercepted by veteran linebacker Josh Bines. Joe immediately responded by
- 5:54Speaker 1: completing deep balls to Tyler Boyd, Mike Thomas, and c
- 5:58Speaker 1: ju Zama. Then he approached Binds and picked his brain
- 6:02Speaker 1: about the interception. The thirty one year old linebacker hadn't
- 6:06Speaker 1: seen that before, and not a rookie quarterback. I don't.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I don't think I've had a rookie quarterback came up
- 6:11Speaker 1: to me. You know, maybe I had a few veit
- 6:13Speaker 1: seria there, but definitely not to do the quarterback. But
- 6:15Speaker 1: you could tell he's hungry and wants to get better.
- 6:17Speaker 1: And that's what I like about it. And as I
- 6:19Speaker 1: think everybody's knowing that, especially offense, they're gravitating towards him
- 6:22Speaker 1: because right now he has to lead the way for
- 6:25Speaker 1: this offense. And we're looking forward to it. That's the
- 6:27Speaker 1: type of thing that earns the respect of his teammates.
- 6:30Speaker 1: According to head coach Zach Taylor, you don't do it
- 6:33Speaker 1: by walking in and open your mouth and saying a
- 6:35Speaker 1: lot of things before you actually earn it. You had
- 6:38Speaker 1: to do it through your leadership, you showing you know
- 6:40Speaker 1: exactly what to do when your numbers called. You do
- 6:42Speaker 1: it through proving your toughness, you know, which which he
- 6:45Speaker 1: hasn't quite had the opportunity to do yet with our
- 6:47Speaker 1: guys because he hasn't he hasn't got knocked on his
- 6:49Speaker 1: butt yet. Hits on Burrow are strictly off limits a
- 6:52Speaker 1: training camp, and that's the first thing that offensive coordinator
- 6:55Speaker 1: Brian Callahan mentioned when I asked what Burrow would miss
- 6:59Speaker 1: by not having any preseason games getting hit for the
- 7:02Speaker 1: first time. That's usually that's usually a big part of it. Um.
- 7:06Speaker 1: You know, all quarterbacks kind of have those little jitters.
- 7:09Speaker 1: They don't get touched very often in practice. They don't
- 7:11Speaker 1: feel a live rush, especially for a kid hasn't played
- 7:14Speaker 1: NFL football, a rookie quarterback. Generally, that first time that
- 7:18Speaker 1: rush comes live as the full speed is a little
- 7:21Speaker 1: bit different than college. Now, he was playing against great
- 7:23Speaker 1: players in the secats. It's that's as close as you're
- 7:26Speaker 1: going to ever get probably to NFL speed and tempo.
- 7:29Speaker 1: But that first that first pass rush, that first hit,
- 7:32Speaker 1: that first time they get jolted around, Uh, kind of
- 7:36Speaker 1: reminds him that it's time to play football again. So
- 7:38Speaker 1: you'd like that to happen obviously before the opener um,
- 7:41Speaker 1: but that don't. We don't get that this year. Burrow
- 7:43Speaker 1: isn't getting tackled at practice, but he does face a
- 7:46Speaker 1: pass rush. The coaches blow the whistle to stop the
- 7:49Speaker 1: play if he would have been sacked. As a result,
- 7:52Speaker 1: Joe's had plenty of opportunities to move around in a
- 7:55Speaker 1: muddy pocket and also scramble left or right before making
- 8:00Speaker 1: Tyler Boyd says that's one of Burrow's biggest strengths. Extended
- 8:05Speaker 1: plays is the biggest key of um of keeping an
- 8:08Speaker 1: office on the field. I mean, we really didn't have
- 8:10Speaker 1: too much scramble throws and scrambled touchdowns last year was
- 8:13Speaker 1: very limited. But I think I think that's that's that's
- 8:16Speaker 1: the key of winning. Like you got the Russells, you
- 8:18Speaker 1: got um Lamar. Everybody scrambles around, try to make plays
- 8:21Speaker 1: and and a lot of receivers to work and create separations.
- 8:24Speaker 1: So I mean, Joe, I believe he's a great fit
- 8:27Speaker 1: for a guy like that, not a utilize his ability
- 8:30Speaker 1: in the pocket to maneuver and get away from Toddler
- 8:34Speaker 1: so he can extend plays that we continue to move
- 8:36Speaker 1: the ball. Burrow hasn't only impressed his teammates on the
- 8:40Speaker 1: practice field. Over the past few months, the rookie has
- 8:43Speaker 1: used his large social media platform, including nearly four hundred
- 8:47Speaker 1: thousand followers on Twitter, to speak out against racial injustice
- 8:52Speaker 1: that resonated in the locker room. According to A J. Green,
- 8:55Speaker 1: oh Man, that's what you want to see. You want
- 8:58Speaker 1: to see that quarterback position step up because those are
- 9:01Speaker 1: guys that drive lead. And um, when you have guys
- 9:05Speaker 1: like that stepping up at that young of an age
- 9:08Speaker 1: and um reason, I really haven't shown anything in the
- 9:12Speaker 1: NFL yet, it speaks volume, especially to the guys in
- 9:15Speaker 1: the locker room. You want to rally behind guys like
- 9:17Speaker 1: that who's speaking up um and being a you know,
- 9:21Speaker 1: not an African American male man, being a white male.
- 9:23Speaker 1: He's speaking up for you know what We're trying to
- 9:27Speaker 1: create and when you have the guy like that, you
- 9:30Speaker 1: know you just want to rally behind him. Joe Burrow,
- 9:32Speaker 1: He's not taking a snap in an NFL game. Man.
- 9:34Speaker 1: There are sure to be ups and downs in his
- 9:36Speaker 1: rookie season, much like there were in his first year
- 9:39Speaker 1: at LSU, but he's done everything right so far. According
- 9:44Speaker 1: to current Bengal and former Auburn Tiger c j Uzama,
- 9:49Speaker 1: is an absolute piece. He's an animal out there. Um yeah, uh,
- 9:53Speaker 1: you know, you see you see college, you see what's
- 9:55Speaker 1: going on. You you watch him beat your alma mater
- 9:59Speaker 1: and and do so and convincing fashion. You're like, dang,
- 10:02Speaker 1: this sucks, you know, But um, that just I mean,
- 10:05Speaker 1: he's he's he's he's that guy. Man. He's making all
- 10:08Speaker 1: the right reads. He's getting us in and out of
- 10:10Speaker 1: the right protections and making all the right checks and
- 10:13Speaker 1: certain checks that I didn't even know we could we
- 10:16Speaker 1: were allowed to check into. He's like, why not go
- 10:18Speaker 1: out there and do this or come in here and
- 10:20Speaker 1: do this or Um it's been a lot of fun, Honestly,
- 10:23Speaker 1: it's been a lot of fun to um to build
- 10:27Speaker 1: a relationship with him, build that chemistry with him, and
- 10:30Speaker 1: see how how he operates and how he wants certain
- 10:33Speaker 1: routes run on certain coverages, and um, it's he's He's
- 10:37Speaker 1: he's the real deal. I'll say that Bengals fans certainly
- 10:41Speaker 1: hope he's the real deal. They are counting on number
- 10:44Speaker 1: nine to put them on Cloud nine. Before we get
- 10:48Speaker 1: to Dave Lapham, here's a quick reminder that you can
- 10:50Speaker 1: take your Bengals pride to the next level in twenty
- 10:53Speaker 1: twenty with an official Bengals fan package from Prime Sport.
- 10:58Speaker 1: The Bengals will be scrimmaging inside Paul Brown Stadium on
- 11:01Speaker 1: Sunday night and will have live coverage. LAP and I
- 11:05Speaker 1: will be joined by Marissa Contapelli from six to seven
- 11:08Speaker 1: thirty on the radio at seven LW, online at seven
- 11:13Speaker 1: DWLW dot com, and on the iHeartRadio app. Following the
- 11:18Speaker 1: Bengals practice on Friday, Lap and I discussed the latest
- 11:22Speaker 1: Bengals news and answered the ask Lap questions that you
- 11:25Speaker 1: submitted on Twitter. Lap On Friday, the Bengals were scheduled
- 11:29Speaker 1: to practice at two fifty in the afternoon, They moved
- 11:32Speaker 1: it up to eleven o'clock in the morning to try
- 11:33Speaker 1: to beat the potential of bad weather. But before that happened,
- 11:37Speaker 1: there was a team meeting in the morning. Everybody on
- 11:40Speaker 1: the roster with ownership. Mike Brown was present. The players
- 11:44Speaker 1: requested on Thursday to meet with Mike Brown. He made
- 11:46Speaker 1: that happen on Friday morning, and it sounds like it
- 11:49Speaker 1: was a highly productive meeting for what's going on in
- 11:53Speaker 1: this country. Yeah, you know, and Mike Brown has got
- 11:57Speaker 1: an enormous amount of history. I think that the players
- 12:00Speaker 1: were very responsive to. I mean, Paul his dad obviously
- 12:04Speaker 1: when he was with the Cleveland Browns, Bill Willis Hall
- 12:08Speaker 1: of Fame defensive lineman, Marion Motley Hall of Fame fullback.
- 12:12Speaker 1: These guys were some of the initial black football players
- 12:16Speaker 1: in the National Football League. And he had one in college.
- 12:19Speaker 1: He had one on his military team that he coached
- 12:23Speaker 1: before he got to the All American Football Conference then
- 12:26Speaker 1: eventually the National Football League. But he brought them to
- 12:28Speaker 1: the AAFC initially and then into the National Football League.
- 12:33Speaker 1: That was like the Jackie Robinson of you know, professional football.
- 12:37Speaker 1: So I think the players that didn't know that were
- 12:40Speaker 1: duly impressed by that. And Mike Brown lived it. And
- 12:43Speaker 1: Mike Brown has told me stories many times over the
- 12:46Speaker 1: years about you know, as a young young child going
- 12:50Speaker 1: to Cleveland Brown's training camp and with the players that
- 12:55Speaker 1: he adored and worshiped. His heroes were these guys, and
- 12:59Speaker 1: he spent all kinds of time with them. So, you know,
- 13:01Speaker 1: Mike Brown from the time he was hid or grasshopper
- 13:04Speaker 1: and didn't see color, you know. And so I think
- 13:07Speaker 1: I think that locker rooms, and not just NFL locker rooms,
- 13:11Speaker 1: but locker rooms in general, are you know, just a
- 13:14Speaker 1: great example of what society could be like in terms
- 13:17Speaker 1: of it's a it's a meritocracy. It's not anything about color.
- 13:22Speaker 1: It's not anything about religious you know, a preference, it's
- 13:25Speaker 1: not anything about sexual preferences. It's all it is is
- 13:29Speaker 1: can you get the job done and help us achieve
- 13:33Speaker 1: the goal. So we want to achieve as a group,
- 13:35Speaker 1: as a team, all of us. It's a big melting
- 13:37Speaker 1: pot and man if if some of that could pour
- 13:40Speaker 1: out into the country and the world in general, be huge.
- 13:45Speaker 1: We've heard from several players in recent days talking about
- 13:48Speaker 1: these issues, Carlos dunlap Aj Green, Trey Hopkins. Today, it
- 13:52Speaker 1: underscored to me how smart and how caring the guys
- 13:57Speaker 1: are in this locker room. I don't know if that's
- 13:59Speaker 1: the case all over the place in the National Football League,
- 14:02Speaker 1: but the Bengals are blessed to have really epathetic, smart
- 14:05Speaker 1: and caring players. You're right, dan Um Trey Hopkins. I
- 14:08Speaker 1: was going to ask him when he was done with
- 14:10Speaker 1: his Zoom conference if he'd run for president, and the dude,
- 14:14Speaker 1: the dude as sharp, sharp as attack, and they are.
- 14:18Speaker 1: They're all educated guys. But the thing that is amazing
- 14:21Speaker 1: is um the experiences that they have. And I kind
- 14:25Speaker 1: of heard from some of them when I was playing,
- 14:29Speaker 1: particularly you know, in the National Football League. Vernon Holland
- 14:32Speaker 1: became a really good friend of mine. I was the
- 14:35Speaker 1: only white person he invited to one of his birthday parties,
- 14:38Speaker 1: and I got a little taste of what it was
- 14:41Speaker 1: like to be maybe the different color of everybody else.
- 14:45Speaker 1: But they were all very welcoming and that that was
- 14:48Speaker 1: a unique experience for him. That that was an eye opener, Um.
- 14:52Speaker 1: But to hear these guys talk about things that you
- 14:55Speaker 1: take for granted that you never even thought about having
- 14:57Speaker 1: to worry about, like with their children and telling their
- 15:00Speaker 1: children make sure that you don't do anything that can
- 15:04Speaker 1: be interpreted any other way, but the way that you're
- 15:06Speaker 1: actually thinking, which is harmless, you know, because you know
- 15:10Speaker 1: there's there's a dual standard here, unfortunately, and you have
- 15:13Speaker 1: to have those difficult conversations and then have experienced them themselves.
- 15:17Speaker 1: I mean, I heard, you know, from a lot of guys,
- 15:19Speaker 1: you know, Isaac Curtis, Kenny Riley, Vernon Holland teammates that
- 15:22Speaker 1: became pretty good friends, and some of the experiences, and
- 15:25Speaker 1: it's just that's what they're talking about now. And I
- 15:28Speaker 1: bet it is eye opening. I mean, Zach's not that
- 15:30Speaker 1: old guy, really, And I bet Zach Taylor and other
- 15:32Speaker 1: coaches and other people in the organization when they hear
- 15:35Speaker 1: some of these stories that these guys, you know, had
- 15:37Speaker 1: to had to go through with their families, with their
- 15:40Speaker 1: loved ones, with their friends, it's it's it's mind boggling.
- 15:43Speaker 1: It's really an eye opener, for sure. When George Floyd
- 15:47Speaker 1: was killed, Joe Burrow is one of the first prominent
- 15:50Speaker 1: quarterbacks in the National Football League to tweet something about it.
- 15:53Speaker 1: And I remember how thoughtful I was at the time,
- 15:57Speaker 1: how thoughtful, what thought it was at the time. And
- 15:59Speaker 1: one of the things that he said, very simply was
- 16:01Speaker 1: this isn't politics, it's human rights. And he tweeted again
- 16:06Speaker 1: this week on this subject and it really has resonated
- 16:11Speaker 1: inside of his own locker room. There's no doubt. I mean,
- 16:14Speaker 1: I think that you know, you can have swagger, you know,
- 16:18Speaker 1: because of your football accomplishments, and you know, swagger in
- 16:23Speaker 1: a good way. Swagger, not in an obnoxious way, but
- 16:27Speaker 1: the urned confidence swagger because you got some skins on
- 16:29Speaker 1: the wall. You want a national championship, you won the
- 16:32Speaker 1: Heisman Trophy, you want undefeated and so doing, you set records,
- 16:35Speaker 1: you know, all these touchdowns and all all the things
- 16:39Speaker 1: that go along with it. Those are huge skins on
- 16:41Speaker 1: the wall from a football standpoint. But but Joe Burrow
- 16:46Speaker 1: what he did during his Heisman Trophy acceptance speech, you know,
- 16:49Speaker 1: for his community, you know, the food food banks there
- 16:53Speaker 1: and just the amount of money the response over six
- 16:58Speaker 1: hundred thousand dollars responded, you know, based on what he did.
- 17:02Speaker 1: So you know, Joe is obviously this isn't the first
- 17:05Speaker 1: time that he stepped up and said I care about everybody.
- 17:09Speaker 1: I care about you know, those less fortunate than me
- 17:12Speaker 1: and those that are in more difficult situations than me,
- 17:15Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, Now he becomes a leader
- 17:18Speaker 1: in his teammates eyes, not just the leader in the
- 17:21Speaker 1: huddle as a quarterback, but the leader of the organization,
- 17:26Speaker 1: in the community, in the league, in the country, in
- 17:29Speaker 1: the world. I mean, he takes on a mega leadership role.
- 17:33Speaker 1: And I think he's up to it. I think he's
- 17:35Speaker 1: up to it big time. I agree one hundred percent.
- 17:37Speaker 1: All right, let's turn to some training camp issues, and
- 17:41Speaker 1: I want to start with one of the training camp
- 17:42Speaker 1: battles that I expected to see, and that was Bobby
- 17:46Speaker 1: Hart versus Fred Johnson at right tackle. But until Bobby
- 17:51Speaker 1: briefly was nicked up and had to miss a practice,
- 17:54Speaker 1: he had been getting virtually all of the reps with
- 17:57Speaker 1: the starters at right tackle. What happened to that petition? Yeah,
- 18:01Speaker 1: and big Fred was kicked inside a little bit to guard,
- 18:04Speaker 1: you know, because I you know, I think they're thinking,
- 18:08Speaker 1: you know, is Fred's showing himself to be one of
- 18:13Speaker 1: the five best. Well, if that's the case, see if
- 18:16Speaker 1: you can play guard, see if you can play tackle.
- 18:19Speaker 1: And Fred's played a little bit of everywhere too. I mean,
- 18:21Speaker 1: a lot of these guys have been, you know, required
- 18:25Speaker 1: because again Michael Jordan, the birth of the child, and
- 18:27Speaker 1: the injury, like you mentioned the calf injury to Bobby
- 18:31Speaker 1: Hart A guy's there's been a little bit of musical chairs,
- 18:33Speaker 1: but that's what you have to have. On game day.
- 18:36Speaker 1: There's going to be seven, maybe eight at the most
- 18:38Speaker 1: offensive linemen, So guys have to show the multiplicity in
- 18:42Speaker 1: their versatility of position ability, so you know it. Fred
- 18:48Speaker 1: Fred's an interesting study because Fred against Cleveland showed in
- 18:53Speaker 1: an NFL game against the NFL competition he could do it.
- 18:57Speaker 1: But one game there's not a career make and he
- 19:00Speaker 1: has to. He's like, in my mind, all the offensive
- 19:05Speaker 1: lineman Dan, I watch him very inconsistent. Got to show consistency.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Have to show consistency as a group. All five guys
- 19:15Speaker 1: have to play as a as a group to you
- 19:17Speaker 1: and not have four do it and one, three do
- 19:20Speaker 1: it and two and then then the next play the
- 19:23Speaker 1: two that they're good and the other one of the
- 19:25Speaker 1: other ones. All everybody has to have consistency. It can't
- 19:31Speaker 1: be big ups and downs. And Fred's had some really
- 19:35Speaker 1: good showings and then he's had somewhere, you know, head
- 19:37Speaker 1: scratcher showings, and and it's almost that way I'd say
- 19:41Speaker 1: Trey Hopkins has probably been the most most consistent guy, um,
- 19:45Speaker 1: you know, on a on a day by day basis,
- 19:47Speaker 1: and you know it's everybody has to strive for that.
- 19:53Speaker 1: And you know Bobby had I should say, Fred has
- 19:56Speaker 1: to realize Bobby's played quite a few games in the NFL. Now,
- 20:01Speaker 1: is he better than average NFL tackle? Some people think so,
- 20:07Speaker 1: some people don't. You know, I'm enjoys having nuts mounds don't.
- 20:13Speaker 1: But what Fred has to do is Fred has to
- 20:16Speaker 1: win it out right and honestly right now, I don't
- 20:21Speaker 1: think the competition should be over and I don't think
- 20:24Speaker 1: in my mind when I when I played, I was
- 20:27Speaker 1: like every day I thought, man, I got to bring it.
- 20:29Speaker 1: If you don't bring it, somebody's breathing down your neck.
- 20:33Speaker 1: So Bobby has to realize Fred's breathing down his neck.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Fred has to try to play as well as he can,
- 20:39Speaker 1: consistently as he can to capture it. And like we
- 20:41Speaker 1: said earlier, I think the tiebreaker right now is it
- 20:45Speaker 1: Bobby's smart. Bobby's like Trey in terms of football, you know,
- 20:49Speaker 1: making calls and stuff. And that's a comforting feeling for
- 20:52Speaker 1: a line coach when you get two guys out there
- 20:54Speaker 1: that know every nuance of it, you know, and I
- 20:57Speaker 1: don't think Fred's at that level in terms of the
- 21:00Speaker 1: mental part of it. So unless he outright handles it physically,
- 21:04Speaker 1: it's got to be knockout. That's that's what he's looking at,
- 21:08Speaker 1: I think. So we expect the starting OH line for
- 21:11Speaker 1: the Chargers game to begin the season to be Jonah
- 21:13Speaker 1: Williams left tackle, Michael Jordan left guard, Trey Hopkins center,
- 21:17Speaker 1: Xavier sue Philo right guard, Bobby Hart right tackle. If
- 21:20Speaker 1: that's the case, and again it could change, But if
- 21:22Speaker 1: that's the case, who's the best backup interior guy and
- 21:26Speaker 1: who's the best backup tackle? I'd have to say that
- 21:31Speaker 1: I'd probably think Fred would probably be that third tackle
- 21:34Speaker 1: since he's you know, he played left tackling in Cleveland.
- 21:38Speaker 1: He's battling Bobby at right tackle. Now. If he doesn't
- 21:41Speaker 1: win one of those starting spots, you know, it would
- 21:45Speaker 1: probably be Fred at the tackle position. Inside inside, Billy
- 21:50Speaker 1: Price is the backup center. Is Billy Price the best
- 21:53Speaker 1: backup guard? You know? That's that's a big question. What
- 21:57Speaker 1: about Alex Redmond. If Alex Redman is cleared at the
- 22:01Speaker 1: end of this week or the beginning of next week,
- 22:03Speaker 1: and he shows that that elbow is totally healed and
- 22:06Speaker 1: that he can go out and perform. He's a starting
- 22:09Speaker 1: caliber guard in the National Football League, So you know,
- 22:11Speaker 1: he starts to come into the mix. And I'm telling you,
- 22:15Speaker 1: I'm not saying he's ready right now, but Kim Identagy,
- 22:18Speaker 1: he's he's the guy once because of the Michael Jordan,
- 22:24Speaker 1: you know, the birth of the child and Bobby Hart
- 22:26Speaker 1: having the calf, other lineman had to move all over
- 22:29Speaker 1: and Identagy, I'm watching him play guard. I'm watching him
- 22:32Speaker 1: play tackle. He's just covering people up. He's got really
- 22:35Speaker 1: good feet. He's taken great sets, you know, but again consistency.
- 22:40Speaker 1: One time his jam is really good, next time it's not.
- 22:43Speaker 1: They're in his chest. You can't allow these defensive lineman
- 22:45Speaker 1: in your chest of rabbing your shoulder pads or whatever.
- 22:48Speaker 1: So you know, it's I'm not saying that he's there now,
- 22:51Speaker 1: but I know he has feet, and I know he
- 22:53Speaker 1: has intelligence because he's not like it's not too big
- 22:57Speaker 1: for him. He's not in the huddle when they call
- 22:58Speaker 1: a player looking at his centers tackle when he's playing guard,
- 23:01Speaker 1: like what do I do And he's not doing that
- 23:04Speaker 1: at the line of scrimmage when the audible or whatever.
- 23:06Speaker 1: So to me, he has some potential and I don't
- 23:11Speaker 1: know how quickly it can be developed, but I think
- 23:13Speaker 1: he does have potential. Tremendous left round, late round. Fine.
- 23:17Speaker 1: You know, he looks like a second or third round
- 23:20Speaker 1: guy the way he moves. I mean, he's right now.
- 23:24Speaker 1: I know it's early stages, but Keema Dentogy, Dave Lapham's
- 23:31Speaker 1: guy right now at Chima Dentogy. All right, Let's turn
- 23:34Speaker 1: to the starting linebackers, and most days that's been Josh
- 23:36Speaker 1: Bines and Jermaine Pratt. But there's been a ton of
- 23:38Speaker 1: mixing and matching going on at that position. Out of
- 23:41Speaker 1: the three draft picks, Logan Wilson, A Keen, Davis Gaither
- 23:46Speaker 1: and Marcus Bailey, have any stood out more than the others.
- 23:51Speaker 1: They've all stood out, which is good. You know, I
- 23:53Speaker 1: don't think there's been a front runner's like whoa, you know,
- 23:56Speaker 1: he's like light years better than the others. But the
- 24:00Speaker 1: all they're always advertising that's a good thing. Logan Wilson
- 24:04Speaker 1: is and and Dan I'm going to obviously coat this
- 24:08Speaker 1: with the caveat that. Haven't tackled anybody yet, you know
- 24:12Speaker 1: an opponent, haven't taken an opponent to the ground, haven't
- 24:14Speaker 1: played an NFL snap yet, haven't gotten that NFL game
- 24:18Speaker 1: where I'm telling you the adrenaline rush you your first
- 24:21Speaker 1: NFL game, It's ridiculous. It's it's ridiculous. You feel like
- 24:26Speaker 1: you can lift the stadium, but you got to make
- 24:28Speaker 1: sure you can find it, you know. I mean, it's
- 24:30Speaker 1: like you get you just have to. You have to
- 24:33Speaker 1: make sure that you're not out of your mind because
- 24:35Speaker 1: your body is telling you. You know you can. You're
- 24:37Speaker 1: a superhero. You can do anything, and but you have
- 24:41Speaker 1: to you have to stay focused and make sure that
- 24:42Speaker 1: you're doing the right things that you're supposed to be doing.
- 24:46Speaker 1: And that's that's you know, when the truth will be
- 24:49Speaker 1: told when they line up against the Chargers. M Are
- 24:53Speaker 1: they taking the proper angles to pursuit are they Are
- 24:55Speaker 1: they getting people on the ground? Are they not breaking
- 24:59Speaker 1: down on assignments so they where they're supposed to be
- 25:01Speaker 1: when they're supposed to be there, and doing it how
- 25:02Speaker 1: they're supposed to do it, all of those things. But
- 25:06Speaker 1: looking at them, watching them run, watching them take proper
- 25:10Speaker 1: angles in pursuit and doing some of these things. Looks
- 25:13Speaker 1: like they're going to translate, you know, it looks like
- 25:15Speaker 1: they're going to translate well, and all three of them,
- 25:18Speaker 1: you know. And obviously Bailey hasn't, you know, he had
- 25:22Speaker 1: the injury. So but I think he might be close,
- 25:26Speaker 1: but maybe not where the other two are at this point.
- 25:30Speaker 1: But I know one guy that's salivating and drooling and
- 25:32Speaker 1: everything that you can do is Darren Simmons. Because the
- 25:36Speaker 1: last few years Dan linebacker special team snaps have been
- 25:41Speaker 1: probably the fewest in the league from a position group standpoint,
- 25:44Speaker 1: not anymore. If they can't run, it's hard to use
- 25:47Speaker 1: them on special teams. And these guys can run. All right.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Let's talk about AJ Green. He's been back on the
- 25:52Speaker 1: field after missing about a week with a sore ham string.
- 25:54Speaker 1: He says he wants the reps at practice, he wants
- 25:57Speaker 1: to play in the scrimmage on Sunday and the following Thursday.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Should they play him, I think if the player is
- 26:05Speaker 1: that adamant, I think they need to listen to him.
- 26:09Speaker 1: I've heard his position coaches over the years say Aj
- 26:12Speaker 1: is a rep guy. AJ himself said, I'm a REP guy.
- 26:16Speaker 1: You know, some people don't need dress rehearsal and they're
- 26:21Speaker 1: ready for Opening night. Other guys need dress rehearsal plus
- 26:24Speaker 1: to get ready for Opening night. And you have to
- 26:26Speaker 1: know which you are. And AJ knows. AJ knows he's
- 26:30Speaker 1: a REP guy, and I think he's gonna feel not
- 26:33Speaker 1: quite there if he doesn't get some reps. So whether
- 26:37Speaker 1: it be in thump, which is everything's live except taking
- 26:42Speaker 1: him to the ground, and that's that's fine, because they're
- 26:45Speaker 1: gonna get their hands on him, you know, reroute them,
- 26:47Speaker 1: bump and run, chuck them, all that kind of stuff,
- 26:50Speaker 1: and they're gonna close on him, but not take him
- 26:51Speaker 1: to the ground. He's gonna get hit, he's gonna get
- 26:53Speaker 1: Joss all those good things. I think he needs that.
- 26:56Speaker 1: So wouldn't shock me if on Thursday night or Sunday
- 26:59Speaker 1: night Sunday that he does some thump, maybe not full scrimmage,
- 27:03Speaker 1: taking to the ground, and then on Thursday, if they
- 27:07Speaker 1: expose him at all, it might be very little exposure
- 27:12Speaker 1: on Thursday if he if he begs for it, because
- 27:16Speaker 1: Zach Taylor would just help put him in moth balls
- 27:18Speaker 1: and make sure he's ready for the thirteenth. You have
- 27:22Speaker 1: to listen to the player though, too. And um, you know,
- 27:25Speaker 1: I think I think a j when when you have
- 27:28Speaker 1: a player come out and say I asked him that
- 27:30Speaker 1: in a zoom conference and he said, you know, would
- 27:33Speaker 1: you be No, No, I need I need reps. That's reality.
- 27:38Speaker 1: He's realistic about his needs and his uh what he
- 27:43Speaker 1: has to do to get ready for the opener act Accordingly,
- 27:46Speaker 1: how about we tackle him into one of those bags
- 27:50Speaker 1: they use for stunt men jumping off buildings, or put
- 27:53Speaker 1: him in one of those big donut things, you know,
- 27:56Speaker 1: let him, let him catch, let him catch it, and
- 27:59Speaker 1: then just him inflated. Yeah, as soon as he catches it,
- 28:02Speaker 1: it triggers something and inflates his big bubble, you know,
- 28:05Speaker 1: and he's like, can't again hurt him, can't take him
- 28:08Speaker 1: to the ground hard. I'm game. The Bengals primary offensive
- 28:12Speaker 1: grouping last year was three wide receivers in one tight end,
- 28:15Speaker 1: and when we looked at the top three wide receivers
- 28:18Speaker 1: this year, we all kind of assumed, all right, Aj
- 28:20Speaker 1: Green clearly number one, Tyler Boy number two, and then
- 28:23Speaker 1: interesting battle between te Higgins and John Ross perhaps to
- 28:27Speaker 1: be the primary number three guy. Is Auden Tate their
- 28:32Speaker 1: third best wide receiver. Man, I'll tell you the reps
- 28:35Speaker 1: he's putting up a training camp. He's he's making noise.
- 28:38Speaker 1: But I don't think i'd have him, you know, as
- 28:41Speaker 1: the number three receiver. But I would look and say, man,
- 28:47Speaker 1: I might go big at times a six four t
- 28:52Speaker 1: six four Tate six five. And we've seen Joe Burrow
- 28:56Speaker 1: with Tate. I mean, he has a great feel for
- 29:00Speaker 1: where to put those contested catches. If you've got basically
- 29:03Speaker 1: an NBA front court, you know, down the football field
- 29:07Speaker 1: with these six foot to you know, five eleven to
- 29:10Speaker 1: six one defensive backs, Man, I might want to go big.
- 29:15Speaker 1: And if I go big, An He's shown it, Man
- 29:18Speaker 1: he can and AJ climb the ladder. I mean AJ
- 29:21Speaker 1: can do it. I'm I can't wait to see Aj
- 29:24Speaker 1: Sky for one of those Joe Barrow big parabolo you know,
- 29:28Speaker 1: contested catch deals. Tee Higgins is shown it can do
- 29:31Speaker 1: the same thing. So there's gonna be packages. There's gonna
- 29:34Speaker 1: be times where it's like, yeah, Taylor, he fits in this,
- 29:38Speaker 1: and you know, and the more reps he gets in
- 29:41Speaker 1: training camp and delivers on him again, another guy when
- 29:44Speaker 1: opportunity knocked, he stepped up. Alex Erickson took advantage of opportunities.
- 29:49Speaker 1: That's what you have to do to stay in the league.
- 29:52Speaker 1: The Mayde has been doing zoom calls with a couple
- 29:55Speaker 1: of players a day on average, and everybody that they
- 29:58Speaker 1: trot out in front of us gets asked about Joe
- 30:00Speaker 1: Burrow and they all gush with their praise. Has anything
- 30:04Speaker 1: in particular caught your ear? The biggest thing that the
- 30:09Speaker 1: teammates almost universally man leader. You know, he's got the swag,
- 30:16Speaker 1: you know, and it's it's not being said like, you know, boy,
- 30:20Speaker 1: you know this guy, he's a cocky sucker. You know,
- 30:22Speaker 1: never heard cocky, never never earned confidence. That's what it is.
- 30:27Speaker 1: And and because he's does he has skins on the wall,
- 30:30Speaker 1: there's no doubt about it. I mean, he's but he
- 30:35Speaker 1: came in and and has handled everything the right way.
- 30:38Speaker 1: He has such good people skills. You know, he's not
- 30:41Speaker 1: He's not going to just walk into the room with
- 30:43Speaker 1: his chest out and like, hey there's a new marshal
- 30:45Speaker 1: in town and you guys are nothing. You know, it's
- 30:47Speaker 1: not gonna He's not like that. And I think what
- 30:52Speaker 1: what he does is brings out the best in everybody
- 30:55Speaker 1: and makes them feel confident in themselves. He kind of
- 30:58Speaker 1: like just exude this earned confidence that's contagious, you know,
- 31:02Speaker 1: and I think they talk about it all the time. Man,
- 31:05Speaker 1: he came into that huddle and just took control of
- 31:07Speaker 1: the huddle. Whoever, I don't know if it started with
- 31:10Speaker 1: his dad or Zach whoever, whoever told him, and I'm
- 31:14Speaker 1: sure he probably did the same thing at LSU, So
- 31:16Speaker 1: it started long before here with the Bengals. That that is.
- 31:20Speaker 1: That's a fact though, Dan, particularly when you're on the
- 31:22Speaker 1: road in a hostile environment, when your quarterback comes into
- 31:26Speaker 1: the huddle like John Wayne, we're gonna kick some tail boys,
- 31:30Speaker 1: and this is how we're gonna do it. It's like, yeah,
- 31:33Speaker 1: you know, instead of coming in with eyes wide and
- 31:37Speaker 1: let's go eighty three x, say on two, ready break,
- 31:40Speaker 1: I mean, that's not going to cut it. So it's
- 31:43Speaker 1: just it's just exuding that that confidence, that presence, And
- 31:46Speaker 1: I think that's the biggest thing about him. He does
- 31:49Speaker 1: have a presence, he really does. I mean, Guys, he
- 31:53Speaker 1: walks into the room, guys notice, guys gravitate toward him,
- 31:56Speaker 1: and I think that's the thing almost every one of them. Man,
- 31:59Speaker 1: he's taken control the huddle. He's like a ten year
- 32:02Speaker 1: said he's going to play fifteen. A's gonna run in
- 32:05Speaker 1: for fifteen already that dog and hunt right there. But
- 32:07Speaker 1: I think that's the biggest thing about him. We've heard,
- 32:10Speaker 1: going back to the zoo zoom calls that the players
- 32:13Speaker 1: and coaches did in lieu of OTAs and mini camps,
- 32:17Speaker 1: that he had a tremendous command of the offense right away.
- 32:20Speaker 1: And you know, I thought that was impressive, But then
- 32:23Speaker 1: it really hit home for me how impressive that actually
- 32:27Speaker 1: is when we were watching practice with former UC quarterback
- 32:30Speaker 1: Tony Pike and he was talking about in his first
- 32:32Speaker 1: NFL camp with Carolina, he was just hoping to be
- 32:36Speaker 1: able to spit out a play. It was so much
- 32:39Speaker 1: more complicated. And for Joe Burrow to have all of
- 32:43Speaker 1: this down and be able to make checks and changes
- 32:45Speaker 1: at the line of scrimmage like he's been playing for
- 32:48Speaker 1: five years is truly different from the norm, no question.
- 32:53Speaker 1: And he's manipulating safeties with his eyes and his shoulders.
- 32:57Speaker 1: You know, he's doing all these things that are you know,
- 33:00Speaker 1: danced graduate school stuff. You know, instead of just I'm
- 33:04Speaker 1: gonna take make sure I don't fumble the snap and
- 33:06Speaker 1: first thing I see, I'm going to throw to, you know,
- 33:09Speaker 1: type of read. It reminds me of I had an
- 33:12Speaker 1: opportunity to do an NFL game when Peyton Manning and
- 33:15Speaker 1: Tom Morton were together early in Peyton Manning's career with
- 33:18Speaker 1: the Indianapolis Colts, and Tom Moore said, I'm telling you,
- 33:22Speaker 1: man early on, this kid was like what he's got,
- 33:27Speaker 1: He's got such commands, such a football iq. He goes.
- 33:30Speaker 1: He made all of us better, he said, including me.
- 33:33Speaker 1: It's like, you know, the smartest kid in the room.
- 33:35Speaker 1: No coach, that's that's wrong. This is the way he goes.
- 33:38Speaker 1: This kid now and he made me a better coach.
- 33:41Speaker 1: I was more prepared. And he said, Peyton Manning lifted
- 33:44Speaker 1: everything and everybody. And he said it got to the
- 33:46Speaker 1: point where instead of me and stall in the offense
- 33:48Speaker 1: said Peyton go do it. He said, Peyton would get
- 33:51Speaker 1: up and I just kind of he said, I don't
- 33:53Speaker 1: know what they were paying me to do. And I
- 33:54Speaker 1: think that's what Joe Burrow is about. Peyton Manning kind
- 33:58Speaker 1: of re wrote preparation, you know, rewrote the first guy in,
- 34:03Speaker 1: last guy to leave, and just you know, grind it,
- 34:06Speaker 1: you know, learning how to be a grinder and loving
- 34:08Speaker 1: the grind. Joe Burrow is cut from that cloth, and
- 34:12Speaker 1: I think that, you know, as he advances and even
- 34:17Speaker 1: into his early in his rookie year, I'm not saying
- 34:19Speaker 1: that he's ready to do what Peyton Manning was doing
- 34:21Speaker 1: with Tom Moore right now, because he's going to see
- 34:24Speaker 1: coverages and defensive configurations that he hasn't really seen yet.
- 34:28Speaker 1: But you know, I mean, Tom Moore said Peyton Manning
- 34:30Speaker 1: adjusted though so quickly. I think this kid's going to
- 34:33Speaker 1: do that, and I think fairly early on. The coach
- 34:36Speaker 1: is going to have to try to figure out ways
- 34:38Speaker 1: to keep him real interested and motivated like Tom Moore was,
- 34:42Speaker 1: because the sucker is he's smart now, he definitely is.
- 34:47Speaker 1: All right. I'm gonna put you on the spot a
- 34:49Speaker 1: little bit here. I want you to give me a
- 34:51Speaker 1: random observation about a player a coach from training camp
- 34:55Speaker 1: that you find interesting, and I'll give you an example
- 34:58Speaker 1: of what I'm talking about. When the defense takes the
- 35:01Speaker 1: field for their reps in eleven on eleven drills, I've
- 35:04Speaker 1: noticed that more often than not, Mike Daniels is usually
- 35:08Speaker 1: the first guy that runs out there. He's three hundred
- 35:10Speaker 1: and ten pounds, he's thirty one years old, He's been
- 35:12Speaker 1: to the Pro Bowl, He's logged a great career, largely
- 35:15Speaker 1: with the Green Bay Packers, and yet he shows his
- 35:17Speaker 1: attitude and his enthusiasm by running out there and being
- 35:21Speaker 1: the first guy out there much of the time. So,
- 35:24Speaker 1: has anything little and interesting caught your eye like that?
- 35:27Speaker 1: Well to feed off of that, Gino Atkins has responded
- 35:31Speaker 1: to it. In my opinion, Geno Atkins is killing it
- 35:35Speaker 1: in one on one pass rush. And Geno Atkins reached
- 35:38Speaker 1: out to him because way back, Marshall Yonda, the legendary
- 35:44Speaker 1: alignment for the Baltimore Ravens, went to Iowa, as did Daniels,
- 35:48Speaker 1: and Marshall Yonder reached out to Daniels and Io grad
- 35:51Speaker 1: and said, look, you have the same body type as
- 35:54Speaker 1: Gino Atkins, who I have a tremendous amount of respect for,
- 35:57Speaker 1: and he's unbelievable and I play against the year blah
- 36:00Speaker 1: blah blah and um. So they kind of reached out
- 36:03Speaker 1: to each other and they became you know, friendly, and
- 36:06Speaker 1: and Gino would say, hey, you know why don't you
- 36:09Speaker 1: come here? Why don't you come here? So now they're here,
- 36:11Speaker 1: Now they've you know, they're together, and it feels so good.
- 36:17Speaker 1: You know, it's like these two guys, you got a
- 36:19Speaker 1: tandem of the same type of defensive tackle. Uh low,
- 36:23Speaker 1: center of gravity, powerful, And I think Gino is he's
- 36:30Speaker 1: hit the fountain of youth. I mean he'll he'll win
- 36:32Speaker 1: a pass rush, sprink back like Sam Hubbard. Gino last
- 36:36Speaker 1: year could barely walk. I mean he was. He was
- 36:41Speaker 1: playing way too many snaps. He played like seventy percent
- 36:43Speaker 1: of the snaps. And I mean I thought that. I
- 36:45Speaker 1: thought he was on the back nine, putting out on seventeen. Now, shoot,
- 36:51Speaker 1: he's making the turn. He's looking like he's, you know,
- 36:53Speaker 1: just get nine done and gonna play a solid back nine.
- 36:56Speaker 1: I mean he's he's he's back. He's rejuvenated. And I
- 36:59Speaker 1: think it was an offseason to work. I think they
- 37:01Speaker 1: are going to monitor or snaps, but I think Daniels
- 37:04Speaker 1: and the enthusiast DJ reader Daniels, I think he's like,
- 37:08Speaker 1: he's rejuvenated. It's a different Geno. I like it made
- 37:12Speaker 1: the turn. Had a gatorade, had a hot dog, or
- 37:14Speaker 1: a brought it's back on the card. Ready to play
- 37:16Speaker 1: the tenth hole? Right up my alley. All right, Time
- 37:20Speaker 1: for a new batch of ask Lap questions that were
- 37:23Speaker 1: submitted by Bengals fans on Twitter. Our first question comes
- 37:28Speaker 1: from New Day Dusty. His question reads, where do you
- 37:33Speaker 1: predict the offensive line ranks by the season's end, and
- 37:36Speaker 1: if they can rank somewhere in the middle of the pack,
- 37:39Speaker 1: how high is the offensive ceiling? Well here here on
- 37:44Speaker 1: your observation. My hope is that they become, you know,
- 37:50Speaker 1: an average offensive line, maybe even like a super Gift
- 37:55Speaker 1: would be a cut above. But if they're just middle
- 37:58Speaker 1: of the pack, which is good, I mean the middle
- 38:00Speaker 1: of the pack offensive line is a good unit. With
- 38:03Speaker 1: the skill position players they have, they could be damn good,
- 38:07Speaker 1: I mean really good. We talked about it before Joe
- 38:13Speaker 1: Burrow won the Heisman. The Bengals had two quarterbacks won
- 38:16Speaker 1: the NFL Heisman MVP Ken Anderson, Boomers Siason. They both
- 38:20Speaker 1: had running games. You know, we had Pete Johnson with
- 38:24Speaker 1: Kenny Anderson Boomersiason had Icky Woods and James Brooks. So
- 38:29Speaker 1: you have to be balanced. You have to be able
- 38:31Speaker 1: to do both. And the offensive line has to win
- 38:34Speaker 1: at the line of scrimmage, get a running game going
- 38:36Speaker 1: help a rookie quarterback, so they don't come with all
- 38:38Speaker 1: these exotic packages and blitzes and everything else. It minimizes
- 38:42Speaker 1: what they can do because we can't get too small
- 38:45Speaker 1: there pound than us, you know. And then you control
- 38:48Speaker 1: the clock and you start to wear their defense out
- 38:51Speaker 1: and the Bengals defense is rested. I mean, when you
- 38:54Speaker 1: can run the football, everybody benefits the entire team. The
- 38:57Speaker 1: ripple effect is huge, so offensive line be able to
- 39:02Speaker 1: run it, and then it's easier for you to pass block.
- 39:05Speaker 1: If you're a third and seven or more man, it's
- 39:07Speaker 1: a beast in the National Football League. So if they
- 39:10Speaker 1: can get to middle of the pack or scoch better,
- 39:14Speaker 1: they could be really good, really good. We talked about
- 39:18Speaker 1: some of the individual offensive lineman earlier, but Steve oh
- 39:21Speaker 1: has this question, how is O'Shea dogas playing in practice?
- 39:25Speaker 1: O'she Dugas is a big, strong, bodied guy, not tremendous mobility,
- 39:32Speaker 1: struggling a little bit from a mobility stampoint. But I'm
- 39:34Speaker 1: telling you that you can't bull Russ Duga. Oh Man,
- 39:38Speaker 1: do Gas a load? He's a load. But the thing
- 39:42Speaker 1: that there's more guys able to go position versatility than him,
- 39:48Speaker 1: And I'm not sure if that's just physical or if
- 39:51Speaker 1: it's physical and mental. You know, he may not be,
- 39:54Speaker 1: you know, as as sharp as some of the other
- 39:56Speaker 1: guys in terms of comprehending and you know, entire schematics
- 40:01Speaker 1: and packages where you can play anywhere in the offensive line.
- 40:03Speaker 1: And I'm not really familiar with that side of it.
- 40:06Speaker 1: But yeah, he's he belongs in an NFL camp, that's
- 40:11Speaker 1: for sure. He is one big, powerful human being. The
- 40:15Speaker 1: next question comes from our buddy, Man, have any of
- 40:18Speaker 1: the undrafted free agents stood out? Well, I'm not sure
- 40:22Speaker 1: if they're undrafted before they came, but man, running back Patrick,
- 40:31Speaker 1: I mean Patrick Patrick is a guy that had a
- 40:36Speaker 1: big scrimmage, had the big run and had a good scrimmage,
- 40:39Speaker 1: but he stacked a bunch of good practices together. You know,
- 40:41Speaker 1: it hasn't just been a one hit wonder. You know,
- 40:44Speaker 1: he's he's two hundred and thirty pounds and he's got
- 40:49Speaker 1: some he can run, he's got some good feet, he's
- 40:51Speaker 1: got a little making missibility, he's solid and blitz pickup
- 40:54Speaker 1: that I've seen. He catches the ball well. He played
- 40:57Speaker 1: special teams at Florida State, he played special teams in
- 41:00Speaker 1: the XFL, so he could help maybe Darren Simmons. He's
- 41:04Speaker 1: kind of caught my eye. And it was not just
- 41:06Speaker 1: you know that one run in the in the scrimmage
- 41:09Speaker 1: that he had and another guy that's kind of stood
- 41:11Speaker 1: out to me a little bit. With their problem at
- 41:14Speaker 1: defensive tackle, Tupo opted out Glasgow who didn't pass his
- 41:19Speaker 1: physical and then when you know it has to have surgery,
- 41:23Speaker 1: this kid Bledsoe from Oklahoma. You know, I start watching
- 41:26Speaker 1: him a little bit. Yeah, man, he's kind of he's
- 41:28Speaker 1: hanging in there, he's competing. You know, he's looking like
- 41:30Speaker 1: there's a possibility there. They signed McKenzie, who you know,
- 41:35Speaker 1: it was in the NFL camp as a guard. That's
- 41:37Speaker 1: Regie McKenzie's son, by the way, he played at University
- 41:39Speaker 1: of Tennessee, and they signed him just have you know,
- 41:41Speaker 1: training camp bodies. But I'm thinking, you know, could Bledsoe
- 41:45Speaker 1: be another guy in the defensive tackle rotation if they
- 41:48Speaker 1: decide to go, you know, with that many with four
- 41:51Speaker 1: you know, we already talked about the three good ones,
- 41:54Speaker 1: all Pro Bowl caliber guys, but Bledsoe is kind of
- 41:57Speaker 1: an interesting guy. I'm gonna watch him a little bit
- 41:59Speaker 1: more again. These next few practices and two scrimmages separate
- 42:04Speaker 1: the men from the boys. Then Dan, I'm worthy on
- 42:07Speaker 1: running back Jack Patrick number thirty one. He was Odd
- 42:10Speaker 1: and Tate's roommate for a while at Florida State. All Right,
- 42:13Speaker 1: our next ask lap question comes from a celebrity Bengals
- 42:17Speaker 1: fan of sorts, New York Times best selling author and
- 42:21Speaker 1: former Sports Illustrated writer Lars Anderson, who happens to be
- 42:25Speaker 1: a huge Bengals fan a good friend to Paul Brown.
- 42:29Speaker 1: Here comes this question, what was the best game you
- 42:32Speaker 1: saw Joe Burrow play last year? And why? Here it
- 42:36Speaker 1: is as I'm going through my memory bank, it was
- 42:39Speaker 1: the National Championship game. All right, blitz package early on
- 42:45Speaker 1: from Brent Vanables. Brent Vanibles, I sought Oklahoma. He's a
- 42:48Speaker 1: hell of a defensive coordinator. He's a coordinator at Clemson,
- 42:51Speaker 1: and Clemson's up seventeen seven. Borrow through a touchdown pass,
- 42:55Speaker 1: but he's down ten points and this is the second
- 42:57Speaker 1: quarter I'm watching. Burrow goes to the sideline and he's
- 43:00Speaker 1: on the headset with Joe Brady and Poker face. You
- 43:05Speaker 1: can't tell if he's losing by ten, winning by ten,
- 43:07Speaker 1: or anything in between. And that's what I really liked
- 43:09Speaker 1: about burrows whole career. Aol issue, same face, Go put
- 43:13Speaker 1: on the headset, make adjustments, keep sawing wood again. Joe
- 43:18Speaker 1: Burrow's game is poised. No panic. It didn't panic, three
- 43:22Speaker 1: yard touchdown run, two touchdown passes all of a sudden,
- 43:25Speaker 1: It's twenty eight seventeen at the half, and then Clemson
- 43:30Speaker 1: scores a touchdown two point conversion. It's twenty eight twenty five.
- 43:33Speaker 1: They come back a little bit. Joe Burrow finishes two
- 43:36Speaker 1: touchdown passes, forty two to twenty five, five touchdown passes,
- 43:40Speaker 1: one touchdown running, no gives. But at one point down
- 43:44Speaker 1: seventeen seven to Clemson in the second quarter, you know,
- 43:48Speaker 1: it's like man our protections, We're not picking up these
- 43:51Speaker 1: blitz packages. A lesser man may have crumbled a little bit,
- 43:56Speaker 1: but Joe Burrow stood tall, and he and Joe Brady
- 43:59Speaker 1: made a just and they kicked Venable's packages right in
- 44:03Speaker 1: the tail. And that was impressive to me in the
- 44:06Speaker 1: biggest game of the year, to be able to do that,
- 44:09Speaker 1: make the adjustments and then go and finish and finish
- 44:11Speaker 1: Big was massive. I'm gonna say the previous game against
- 44:15Speaker 1: Oklahoma because when he threw seven touchdown passes in the
- 44:18Speaker 1: first half, I needed a drool bucket to control myself.
- 44:22Speaker 1: Next question, definitely, definitely all right. This question comes from
- 44:28Speaker 1: Steve in Kenwood. Are the Bengals watching hard knocks to
- 44:32Speaker 1: scout their Week one opponent the Chargers? I'm sure they are,
- 44:36Speaker 1: but the uh, the Chargers and HBO and when the
- 44:42Speaker 1: Bengals didn't Marvin Lewis and HBO and the Bengals. You
- 44:47Speaker 1: they have they have the option of editing everything. If
- 44:51Speaker 1: there's anything on tape in the background or whatever that
- 44:54Speaker 1: they don't want out there, it's on the on the
- 44:57Speaker 1: editing floor does not make the broadcast. So I'm not
- 45:00Speaker 1: sure that a whole hell of a lot is gonna
- 45:02Speaker 1: gonna get there from a football scheme schematic standpoint a
- 45:06Speaker 1: tip as such. Um, I think all the stuff that
- 45:10Speaker 1: they show football stuff is very very you know, pattent,
- 45:15Speaker 1: go drill routine, warm up stuff. There's not gonna be
- 45:19Speaker 1: a whole lot of things they're gonna They're gonna really
- 45:21Speaker 1: show themselves, but you never know. They may they may
- 45:25Speaker 1: who knows somebody screws up and you know, oh yeah,
- 45:28Speaker 1: we'll take that out, but they don't. So it's worth watching.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Plus it's it's also you know, you're getting in the
- 45:35Speaker 1: understand what the coordinators, how they think a little bit um.
- 45:39Speaker 1: Maybe you already know them, maybe you don't. Any Any
- 45:42Speaker 1: edge you can get in this competitive environment in the
- 45:44Speaker 1: National Football League is worthwhile. This Bengals question comes from
- 45:50Speaker 1: Bearcat Steve. How much will lack of crowd noise accelerate
- 45:54Speaker 1: a rookie quarterbacks development? Yeah, that's that's an interesting question.
- 45:59Speaker 1: I mean, I think that that the biggest thing that
- 46:02Speaker 1: the rookie quarterback you know, has to deal with. And
- 46:05Speaker 1: in Joe Burrow's case at LSU, crowd noise wasn't that
- 46:08Speaker 1: big a deal because everything was hand signals and everything
- 46:11Speaker 1: was cards from the sideline. Now there aren't going to
- 46:13Speaker 1: be cards from the sideline in the NFL or with
- 46:16Speaker 1: the Bengals, but you know, it may be when you're
- 46:19Speaker 1: in a noisy environment, it's all it's all signals, all
- 46:23Speaker 1: hand signals and all that sort of thing. Now, Joe Burrow,
- 46:26Speaker 1: I think with his poison maturity, like retiring, I think
- 46:29Speaker 1: he's going to be able to handle all that. But
- 46:31Speaker 1: the crowd noise issue is a good question, and we've
- 46:35Speaker 1: you know, Bross a couple of times. Will they allow
- 46:38Speaker 1: will the league allow the home team to not just
- 46:42Speaker 1: you know, run crowd noise like all thirty two teams
- 46:46Speaker 1: in the NFL, whether you're home or away, you have
- 46:48Speaker 1: a soundtrack and just running it. Or will they allow
- 46:50Speaker 1: the home team an advantage of crazy crowd noise, you know,
- 46:54Speaker 1: when the opposition has the football like there would be
- 46:57Speaker 1: in a sold out crowd. That's that hasn't been the term.
- 47:00Speaker 1: And yet that hasn't as far as I know. There's
- 47:02Speaker 1: no definitive answer to that. In the Bengals man going
- 47:06Speaker 1: to Cleveland, going to Philadelphia, they can pump in all
- 47:09Speaker 1: the noise that those crowds make Joe Burrow in the
- 47:12Speaker 1: Bengals offense. Yeah, it's a factor, There's no question about
- 47:16Speaker 1: It's a good question. All Right, We've got a couple
- 47:18Speaker 1: more questions, and our next one comes from our friend
- 47:21Speaker 1: and a very talented reporter in our own right, Lindsay Patterson.
- 47:24Speaker 1: I think this one's for the two of us, really
- 47:27Speaker 1: your favorite call together. So we've been broadcasting the games
- 47:32Speaker 1: for nine years together. What's your favorite call that we've
- 47:35Speaker 1: had together. My favorite call was the Packers game in
- 47:40Speaker 1: twenty thirteen. The Bengals went two and one with the victory.
- 47:44Speaker 1: It was back and forth thirty four thirty final. Bengs
- 47:48Speaker 1: were the first team ever to win, leading by fourteen
- 47:51Speaker 1: and trailing by sixteen in that football game. And it's
- 47:55Speaker 1: thirty to fourteen in the second half, Cincinnati cuts the
- 47:57Speaker 1: lead to thirty to twenty eight. Packers fumble. Our boy
- 48:01Speaker 1: Terence Newman picks it up and goes fifty eight. I
- 48:04Speaker 1: lost my cookies. Man. It was like the ball is out,
- 48:07Speaker 1: the ball is out out. Oh man, he's oh, Terence
- 48:11Speaker 1: is got. I'm thinking, this is unbelievable. What and Aaron
- 48:15Speaker 1: Rodgers was at his at his peak, and I'm thinking
- 48:17Speaker 1: this is a huge win. This is unbelievable. And the
- 48:21Speaker 1: Bengals had four turnofs. They couldn't get out of their
- 48:23Speaker 1: own way. I mean, that's that's why how the Packers
- 48:25Speaker 1: took the big lead on them, and then they mounted
- 48:27Speaker 1: the comeback and they went it on a defensive turnover
- 48:30Speaker 1: touchdown fumble recovery fifty eight yard johned by Terrence Newman.
- 48:34Speaker 1: I remember that that game was fun because it was
- 48:37Speaker 1: back and forth. It was it was a hell of
- 48:38Speaker 1: a game. I'm going to Christmas Eve two twelve, next
- 48:42Speaker 1: to last game of the regular season. The Bengals go
- 48:45Speaker 1: to Hines Field. If they win, they clinch a playoff spot,
- 48:48Speaker 1: and they knock the dreaded hated Steelers out of the
- 48:52Speaker 1: playoffs on their home field. Less than a minute to go,
- 48:56Speaker 1: Roethlisberger tries to buy extra time and a typical Rothless
- 49:00Speaker 1: Burger way, he's scrambling around. Finally, he throws downfield, intercepted
- 49:04Speaker 1: by Reggie Nelson, his nemesis. On the next play, Andy
- 49:07Speaker 1: Dalton connects to aj Green to get them within field
- 49:10Speaker 1: goal range, and Josh Brown delivers to give the Bengals
- 49:15Speaker 1: their second consecutive playoff berth and a rare victory over
- 49:19Speaker 1: the Steelers since we've been doing the games together. Yeah,
- 49:21Speaker 1: I win in Pittsburgh is memorable. There is no question
- 49:25Speaker 1: about that. Like you said, I went over Pittsburgh at all. Yeah,
- 49:29Speaker 1: there's been there's been some fun games. I'll tell you.
- 49:32Speaker 1: We're a nice little playoff run. To start our little
- 49:34Speaker 1: tenure here, we gotta get back on a like a
- 49:36Speaker 1: nice little five year run again, A men to that.
- 49:41Speaker 1: I also want to join Phil sapp as the only
- 49:45Speaker 1: Bengals play by play announcer to call a playoff victory.
- 49:49Speaker 1: Phil's had them all so far. I want to join
- 49:50Speaker 1: that club. All right, here comes our final question. This
- 49:54Speaker 1: one is from Thomas, directed specifically to you. Do you
- 49:59Speaker 1: like I'm okay with Getta? You know, it's not like
- 50:06Speaker 1: it's not like I gotta have Ghetta, but yeah, I'm
- 50:09Speaker 1: okay with it. I mean it's uh, there's not a
- 50:12Speaker 1: whole lot of things I don't like, and uh, yeah,
- 50:16Speaker 1: I like it as a breakfast food. I'm okay with it.
- 50:19Speaker 1: I love Getta? Do you? And on one of the
- 50:22Speaker 1: not really, although I'll eat it pretty much in any form.
- 50:25Speaker 1: I like it in omelets. Yeah, I can eat it
- 50:28Speaker 1: with cheese on it. But on one of our stops
- 50:31Speaker 1: on our Wednesday night Game Plan shows last year, they
- 50:35Speaker 1: had a Ghetta sub Do you remember that? And it
- 50:37Speaker 1: was tremendous. It was that was that was as good
- 50:40Speaker 1: as Getta gets. Not healthy, but tasty, very very tasty.
- 50:47Speaker 1: Don't forget. We'll have live coverage of Sunday Scrimmage from
