Transcript
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Welcome to everyone to Critic, the show where I guess it's the movie rated below 40% on muffled tomatoes and tells us why Critic got it wrong.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Yannis Co, a fully protected daughter.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Ten years later is the era of his way.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: I guess today wrote the book protected husband and also wrote for late coach in Cobert.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Daniel Killsmith.
- 0:33SPEAKER_03: Thank you for having me.
- 0:34SPEAKER_03: I'm very excited to talk about this.
- 0:36SPEAKER_03: How are you today?
- 0:38SPEAKER_03: I'm good.
- 0:38SPEAKER_03: Uh we were talking a little bit off mic about how this is the first thing I am doing today.
- 0:43SPEAKER_03: Uh that because my job is not in my time zone, I uh this is how I'm starting my day is making a big big cup of coffee and talking about Roadhouse.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: That's that must be strange at the moment, like like having that thing of like you've got hours to kill before your job starts as well.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: I guess.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I've been bad at pacing out my day.
- 1:04SPEAKER_03: I end up I end up getting a little overambitious, and then I sort of like use the energy that I have reserved for one workday uh on uh two days.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: Like I have this little morning Saturday where it's like I'm gonna I'm gonna exercise and I'm gonna do all the dishes, and then when work starts, my my body is betrayed.
- 1:21SPEAKER_03: It says, I feel like you already did like a day's worth of stuff.
- 1:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:28SPEAKER_03: This will be the same way.
- 1:29SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm gonna get so hyped over this that this will be the exact same way.
- 1:33SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna be completely spent by the time I have responsibilities.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Other people I've been talking to on this have been saying, like, yeah, like which is similar to me, it's just like we reserve we're reserving like one thing in the day at the moment for like that's our thing to do in the day.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: I think that's yeah, I think that's a healthy attitude.
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: Everybody, just to stay just to stay sane, give yourself one thing, one thing to do every day, two if it's a podcast.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I've got this, and then I've got a my first DD session tonight.
- 2:04SPEAKER_03: Oh, your first ever DD session.
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's exciting.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, DD's uh D's fun.
- 2:09SPEAKER_03: I'm not I'm not like a hardcore player or anything, but um I played a lot of tabletop uh when I was in high school, and I've played a couple of I've played a couple of sessions uh during COVID times over Zoom, and it's a it's a blast.
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: I'm really glad people are are rediscovering it and it's having this crazy renaissance.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: And it's a bunch of like comedians doing it as well, so I think it'll be like super interesting to see how that goes.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, oh no, that's super fun.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: It'll that'll be your next that'll be your next podcast.
- 2:35SPEAKER_03: It's inevitable.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't doubt that actually.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: But um yeah, so you've come on to talk about um the movie Roadhouse.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: So what is your history with it then?
- 2:49SPEAKER_03: My history with Roadhouse is I never saw it when I was a kid, uh, which is probably for the best, because it's got like a lot of movies and violence.
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 2:57SPEAKER_03: Um but I was aware of it as like a staple of VHS box culture.
- 3:02SPEAKER_03: Like I knew that this was this was a punching and fighting movie that I could see the box and blockbuster video.
- 3:08SPEAKER_03: But I knew from being a comedy fan growing up, I knew that Roadhouse was Crow T robots' favorite movie on Mystery Science Theater 3000.
- 3:17SPEAKER_03: So I had uh like a bootleg CD of all the mystery science theater music, including the Roadhouse Christmas Carol.
- 3:24SPEAKER_03: But I didn't get, you know, he's I didn't get any of the the references.
- 3:27SPEAKER_03: I was kind of like getting them in context that it was this it was this tough guy movie that Crow liked about uh a bar and you know somebody stealing from the till and uh getting the hell beaten out of them.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: So I didn't see it until I believe it's it's natural environment, uh cable television.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: I was just flipping channels one night, which I very rarely do because it's it's 2021.
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: And this would have been like 20 2015 or 2016, and we were just flipping channels.
- 3:59SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, I've seen I saw Roadhouse for the first time very recently.
- 4:03SPEAKER_03: Um I did not grow up loving this movie.
- 4:07SPEAKER_03: Like uh I I came to it, I came to it fully as an adult.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: I thought you were gonna be like a teenager and come on.
- 4:14SPEAKER_03: No, that would have made more sense.
- 4:15SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's that's I think how most people I think that's how most people experience it for the first time.
- 4:21SPEAKER_03: No, I was like engaged, I was like in a bed with my wife.
- 4:24SPEAKER_03: I was like, oh, let's finally let's finally watch Roadhouse.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: This is like an infamously like this is on the list of you know like big crazy movies that uh that become cult hits, and I've never I've never actually seen it.
- 4:36SPEAKER_03: I've just heard people talking about it.
- 4:38SPEAKER_03: And it lives up to it immediately.
- 4:41SPEAKER_03: It is not it's its reputation is not inflated in any way.
- 4:46SPEAKER_03: It's not like we're not you know looking back on it with rose-colored glasses because it seemed so crazy at the time.
- 4:52SPEAKER_03: It is crazy.
- 4:54SPEAKER_03: It's insane.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I love it.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: It's so crazy.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: It's like so for anyone who hasn't seen it, it's a movie about uh a sort of a bounce.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: He's kind of a bouncer.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: He's a cooler.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Uh this guy.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: He's a what?
- 5:10SPEAKER_03: He's a he's a cooler.
- 5:11SPEAKER_03: He is absolutely he is absolutely a bouncer, but when he's introduced, they're like regular bouncers, and then he's the cooler, and he's kind of like the head, the head bouncer who oversees everybody.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: And uh he's there to like calm everything down, and uh he gets hired by this one guy who wants to go clean up this who needs his bar cleaned up because it's such a mess, and everyone is just fighting non-stop uh over nothing.
- 5:37SPEAKER_03: It's uh the kind of place where you sweep up the eyeballs afterwards.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: There's so many like really good good like random one-liners in this movie, actually.
- 5:47SPEAKER_03: It is just it is just a Jenga tower of one-liners.
- 5:51SPEAKER_03: Everything that they say, every line in Roadhouse is like a tweet about violence.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: But that that is the movie.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: That's like the whole thing is just that.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: There's no there's no real plot other than that.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: There's a guy that's kind of like taken over the town, and he is um he takes 10% from each of the places.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: Uh they have to pay him 10% as like a V almost to like like keep them going.
- 6:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's got like a like a protection racket going.
- 6:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:20SPEAKER_03: And it's all legalized through the town's called Jasper, and it's all legalized through like the Jasper Beautification Society or something.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: And so that guy runs the town essentially, and uh he's not happy when Patrick Swayze's character comes in.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: So he starts.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: Because he can scream his nobility.
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: He can sense that Patrick Swayze is a good person.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Although, is he?
- 6:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, sure.
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, no, it's like it's not like we'll we'll probably get into this, but like the movie's not like strictly a Western, but it seems to be like, or you know, like even like a meta western, but it seems to be playing, it plays with Western tropes.
- 7:02SPEAKER_03: That like it's not an origin story of this guy.
- 7:05SPEAKER_03: It's like he's a fully formed hero who just arrives in a town and fixes it.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's a good point.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: I never thought of it as a Western, like, or like playing with Western tropes, but you're completely right there.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: Like, it totally does play with the truck.
- 7:19SPEAKER_03: Stranger comes to town, he's a new sheriff, and like the town's like, like, you know, we don't need the law around here.
- 7:24SPEAKER_03: You know, big what's his name takes care of us.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:28SPEAKER_03: I don't remember, I don't remember why the guy is rich.
- 7:31SPEAKER_03: He just is rich.
- 7:32SPEAKER_03: It's outside of Kansas City.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: He's yeah, he's just kind of made his money from I think he could it.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: From running the town?
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, from running the town.
- 7:41SPEAKER_03: He's just he got rich off the town itself.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Maybe he started with like one place and then worked his way up.
- 7:47SPEAKER_03: Well, I know he doesn't own the car dealership because they show the car dealership.
- 7:51SPEAKER_03: But yeah, so he's he's he arrives in a helicopter, he's like a big shot, and he wears like a white Panama hat.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's like the exact epitome of like what you imagine like a rich Southerner.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: It's like um oh what's the what's the show, Dallas?
- 8:09SPEAKER_03: It's like Yeah, he's uh he's like a Dallas character.
- 8:12SPEAKER_03: But it it is also worth mentioning that even though this feels very like American Southern, it is a it is a solidly Midwestern movie.
- 8:20SPEAKER_03: The the the club, the double deuce, the club is outside the double deuce.
- 8:27SPEAKER_03: Uh the club is is specifically uh described as being outside of Kansas City.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: And it's like, yeah, it's that's Missouri, right?
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: That's Missouri.
- 8:35SPEAKER_03: And it's not like even though there's like bar fights and stuff, it's not really playing with like the redneck tropes.
- 8:42SPEAKER_03: It's really more of this sort of like this like middle America truck stop vibe.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: He's just uh I don't know.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: And then like Swayze is this he's an outsider in the sense that he's like coming he's he's coming in, but for the first time, but he's also like an outsider because of like the way he handles things is through like karate and Tai Chi.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: He's like a Zen.
- 9:09SPEAKER_03: Uh at one point he gets hurt and they they talk about how he has a philosophy degree from NYU, and he's very self-deprecating about that.
- 9:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so he's like a Zen bouncer who practices Tai Chi and uh and he he hates violence.
- 9:26SPEAKER_03: He says nobody wins a fight.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: Um but that is not true because he wins all of the fights.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: He wins all of the fights, and all he does is fight as well.
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: So it's very, you know, it's that sort of like genre film, you know, Batman approach to I'm do I'm doing this because it's necessary.
- 9:45SPEAKER_03: I'm doing this in the spirit of a world where I don't have you know, men like me don't have to exist.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: So I'm doing this so no one else has to ever again.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: Right, so that the double deuce can be a nice bar.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: The funny thing is, like eventually there's one point where it's like the double deuce is turned into like this nice-ish bar, and it just becomes like very corporate and like Yeah, it's fascinating.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: I mean we'll we'll get there, but I think that that's like kind of the that's like the core of the movie.
- 10:15SPEAKER_03: That's like the weirdest thing about this movie, and it timestamps it in a really interesting way.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: So other than seeing it for the for the first time in 2015, 2016, how many times have you seen it until recently?
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Like, had you watched it again until recently, or did you see that one time and then like want to pick it because of that?
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: No, that was it.
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: I've seen it one time.
- 10:35SPEAKER_03: Like most of my favorite movies, most of my favorite movies, I've seen them, you know, uh hundreds of times.
- 10:41SPEAKER_03: This is one where this is like um and people people will say, like, oh, I've never seen Star Wars, I've never seen The Godfather, but like I know all the beats and I get it from Cultural Osmosis.
- 10:50SPEAKER_03: And Roadhouse was one where I knew generally what happened from references and talking to friends.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: And then I Yeah, there's a lot of references to in in other movies and and TV shows and everything to this.
- 11:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think it's a it's a legitimate cult hit.
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: And I saw it once and it was just burned into my brain.
- 11:09SPEAKER_03: And then I rewatched uh I rewatched about half of it for this podcast, yeah, and I was like, yeah, this is what I remember.
- 11:16SPEAKER_03: It's like it's like an old Simpsons episode.
- 11:18SPEAKER_03: It's just so iconic.
- 11:20SPEAKER_03: It's so instantly iconic that like everything that happens, it's just a series of really perfect, indulble moments.
- 11:27SPEAKER_03: So everything that happens is like, yeah, I remember the beats of I remember the beats of- not much happens.
- 11:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and it's not that's the other thing.
- 11:34SPEAKER_03: It's not it's not complicated.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: It's not He comes to town, the rich guy, the rich guy hassles him, and he wins.
- 11:44SPEAKER_03: But he wins by he wins by uh uh kind of violating his violating his peace code.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Oh, we should also say this is straight off of the back of I don't know if it's straight off the back of it, but it's like right very soon after dirty dancing.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: And so Swayze was the biggest star at the time, I guess.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Swayze was huge and he looks incredible.
- 12:09SPEAKER_03: Like he has like a dancer's body.
- 12:13SPEAKER_03: Um he looks like he looks like he could like he looks like he could jump off of a skyscraper and dive into a swimming pool and not ripple the water.
- 12:24SPEAKER_03: He just Patrick Swayze looks like an arrow.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: And I I did read that like they had a lot of trouble filming this because they would have like people swarming the set to see him.
- 12:35SPEAKER_03: Just trying to get a look at him doing his pose.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: Literally, and then like there was one point where like they were filming in the bar and they saw him, like one of the extras saw him like fighting, I guess, and she got so enamored by it with him, she like walked straight into another person and like dropped all her drinks.
- 12:51SPEAKER_03: Well that is kind of that is kind of like his role in the movie, too, because he's playing he's playing so we should just we should just say that like this movie does not really take place in the real world.
- 13:04SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, a lot of what we're about to say does not make sense.
- 13:09SPEAKER_03: And I think that's one of the reasons that it's I think that's one of the reasons that its critic score is so low on Yeah, it's 39%, so it just about qualifies.
- 13:19SPEAKER_03: It's just not getting and that's how I found it.
- 13:21SPEAKER_03: I went to Rotten Tomatoes and I set the slider, I set the slider to 40%, and then I just scrolled down until I found something that I cared about.
- 13:31SPEAKER_03: So you started at the top though, you're like, I'm I'm not going too low.
- 13:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I started I started at the top because I figured I'd I figured I'd find something good faster in like the high thirties.
- 13:40SPEAKER_03: Uh and I could not believe I could not believe that Roadhouse had not been sort of critically re-evaluated, because what it what it is, I mean, really, like uh and and I have to believe they were aware of it at the time.
- 13:52SPEAKER_03: Like I think that they knew they were sort of like making sort of a a meta western or at least a genre film, because what it feels like is like a John Wick or like a very much a John Wick.
- 14:03SPEAKER_03: Like a like a or even like a like a like a comic book movie, like a Scott Pilgrim or something, where it's like this is a-like a kick-offie, like if you're gonna place it somewhere.
- 14:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 14:14SPEAKER_03: Something where something where they know that this is a heightened reality.
- 14:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:23SPEAKER_03: Like they are not they are they're creating a or like speed racer.
- 14:28SPEAKER_03: Like how and that was another one that there was another one that I I saw uh was was potentially a a candidate for this podcast.
- 14:34SPEAKER_03: Like this is a world this is a world where everybody is an assassin.
- 14:38SPEAKER_03: This is a world where everybody cares about car racing, and Roadhouse is a world where there are, I don't know if roadhouses were real.
- 14:48SPEAKER_03: I I wasn't going to like big honky tonk bars when I was a child, but it seems like it's a world where people own these big bars, like these giant dance hall bars, and there is a legendary, there's a network of legendary bouncers who uh will come and uh will come and fix them for you if things are going poorly.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: I mean the funniest thing is that he's so well known throughout the towns that wherever he goes, he like people know him before he gets there.
- 15:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's a famous, he's a famous bouncer fixer.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: I don't think I could tell you my local bouncers.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: Oh, I don't even have a local bar.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: It's 2021.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: I'm not allowed to I have no I have no relationship with any business.
- 15:41SPEAKER_03: But uh yeah, no, I I think that that's I I think that that's sort of why people are like, this is stupid, and they're right, but it is stupid largely on purpose in the service of this really interesting fantasy.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: So hey Here's my thought on it.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: I I think it's not so there's parts of it that are self-aware, and that feels to me like the final third of the movie, and I don't think it gets there until that point.
- 16:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean once the monster truck runs over the car dealership and it becomes clear that this is a fully lawless place, um, yeah, then you start you start wondering, like, why are the police not involved?
- 16:31SPEAKER_03: And you either have to say, like, well, this is a bad movie because it doesn't make any sense, or you have to say, like, this is a good movie because these are choices that they were making on purpose and they're really effective.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: Well, there's stuff that like, yeah, like you said, the monster truck, but there's all I guess there is the helicopter at the start, which is entirely ridiculous as well, like flying into flying over a barn and into just a mansion.
- 16:55SPEAKER_03: That's how you meet the villain.
- 16:56SPEAKER_03: It's very this this screenplay is very, like, by the book.
- 17:00SPEAKER_03: Like, if you bought a screenplay book in the 90s, I would hope that it would talk about how like Roadhouse does everything right.
- 17:08SPEAKER_03: Because you get all these really compelling visual introductions to the bad guy.
- 17:12SPEAKER_03: Like, the first thing he does is uh the first thing he does is uh scare scare a bunch of horses.
- 17:19SPEAKER_03: Uh Dalton, uh Patrick Swayze, uh is uh by the way, credited on Wikipedia as Dr.
- 17:27SPEAKER_03: James Dalton.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: He has a he has a doctorate in philosophy.
- 17:32SPEAKER_03: Dalton uh has come in to uh he works at a bar that's going great.
- 17:38SPEAKER_03: It's the bandstand.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the bandstand, which is introduced at the start by a woman exiting a fancy car and it like pans up, and you see her tilts up and you see her and then you see her wandering into the bar.
- 17:52SPEAKER_03: And then pink letters come up that say roadhouse over her butt while she's walking, and you are you have a full understanding of what this movie is going to be.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: And at this moment there's so much ADR.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: Everything is just ADR, and it's really, really noticeable.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: And it's so funny.
- 18:11SPEAKER_03: I did my rewatch with headphones, and I felt like I was watching like a George Lucas special edition.
- 18:16SPEAKER_03: There was like so much, so much background noise.
- 18:18SPEAKER_03: Whenever they go into like when Emmett or um when um sorry, Emmett's the farmer, when Dalton goes into the uh the car dealership, I was watching it with I was watching it with headphones.
- 18:29SPEAKER_03: There were like phones ringing, and like you have a customer at the front desk.
- 18:33SPEAKER_03: It's and you could tell that they didn't have the budget to they sp they spent all of their money on the the monster truck, yeah, the choreography on the monster truck.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: That monster truck where it destroys like six different cars.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: Oh, it's so great.
- 18:49SPEAKER_03: It's so great.
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: Um so yeah, Dalton, Dalton has this great bar, and then he gets hired.
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: He gets hired to fix up a bad bar.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: Um who but Dalton wants like 5k up front and 500 a night.
- 19:03SPEAKER_03: He makes so much money, and I don't know, and he makes so much money that at one point uh Sam Elliott, who is like the big reveal, like at the end of the credits it says and Sam Elliott.
- 19:14SPEAKER_03: And Sam Elliott.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: Uh who also said that it's his most known character, and I'm like, is it?
- 19:21unknown: Really?
- 19:22SPEAKER_03: More than Big Lebowski at this point?
- 19:24SPEAKER_03: More than like, because he plays like a cartoon in Big Lebowski.
- 19:27SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: That's incredible.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: Even yeah, I mean he Big Lebowski and now um uh what's it called?
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: Oh big a big recent.
- 19:37SPEAKER_03: Star is born.
- 19:37SPEAKER_03: Oh, of course, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:39SPEAKER_03: That makes sense.
- 19:39SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, you'd think that more people would know him as the Big Lower.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: I guess I'm sure he said it before Star is Born.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: He might have even said it before Big Lebowski at this point.
- 19:47SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna- There's no way, like I'm gonna well, I was gonna say it's a it's a it's a spoiler.
- 19:53SPEAKER_03: So anybody who hasn't seen Roadhouse, first of all, you're I don't stop stop what you're doing because none of this makes any sense.
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: Obviously, this is just gibberish.
- 20:02SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, but he he dies in this movie, and that's the only thing stopping me from putting together like a shared uh Sam Elliott uh cinematic universe where his character from Roadhouse is also his character from Star is Born.
- 20:16SPEAKER_03: That would make me delighted.
- 20:19SPEAKER_03: That would be so good.
- 20:20SPEAKER_03: I kind of get it though, because a lot of I keep using the word iconic to describe this movie, and I I guess what I mean by that is that they have these sort of like at the beginning of the movie when uh they try to hire uh Patrick Swayze to fix the double deuce, uh he says, he says, I hear you're the best.
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: He says, Wade Garrett's the best, as though we all know who Wade Garrett is.
- 20:46SPEAKER_03: And then, you know, when Sam Elliott shows up, it's like, oh, that's Wade Garrett.
- 20:49SPEAKER_03: He's calling in for he's calling in for help.
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: So I kind I kind of get that this could be his most well-known role because there is something super heroic about all of the characters and their their like costumes and their designs and their attitude are all very like collectible.
- 21:06SPEAKER_03: You know, like you could see there being action figures of these people, the same way that like the crew of the Enterprise are all these very distinct, specific people.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: But here's the thing did you know he was in it before you watched it?
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: Because I didn't.
- 21:20SPEAKER_03: Sam Elliott?
- 21:22SPEAKER_03: No, the first time I watched it, I caught it after the credits.
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: Uh because uh I watched it on cable.
- 21:30SPEAKER_03: So uh I caught it at the beginning, but just after the credits the first time I watched it.
- 21:36SPEAKER_03: So no, I didn't know Sam Elliott was in it.
- 21:37SPEAKER_02: He just arrived.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: But that's what I mean.
- 21:39SPEAKER_03: He's the most iconic role that people don't know he's in.
- 21:42SPEAKER_03: And then he's at a he's at a topless G string contest at another successful bar.
- 21:49SPEAKER_03: Uh and you know he's a good guy because the soldiers are getting out of hand.
- 21:53SPEAKER_03: Uh there's a bunch of there's a bunch of soldiers, and it also this is another great time stamped moment where uh Sam Elliott says.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: Like uh I know you I know you wanna uh stop the fight the commies.
- 22:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, fight the I know you wanna fight the commies.
- 22:06SPEAKER_03: Like all these guys are at the ship off to Grenada or something.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: Like, I know you wanna fight the commies, but you gotta you gotta do it without getting up on that table.
- 22:15SPEAKER_03: And he's like, oh, splash them down the walls up.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's and they all spray each other with squirt guns, and it's like, oh, this is like uh they're just boys having fun.
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: This is slightly less toxic, toxic masculinity.
- 22:28SPEAKER_03: Uh and then he gets a phone call.
- 22:30SPEAKER_03: Uh, and you know, you know, like, oh, he's a good guy, and he really is the best because you know, he respected the soldiers' right to have a good time, because those are our boys.
- 22:41SPEAKER_03: He respects everyone.
- 22:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: But but he also, you know, he runs a tight show.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: Um so yeah, after after uh Dalton gets the five gets offered the 500 Run a night and the 5k, he obviously takes the deal.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: And like the Bandstand guy's real mad.
- 23:00SPEAKER_03: The bandstand guy knows that Dalton is the greatest thing that ever happens to him.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: Keeping the bandstand going.
- 23:07SPEAKER_03: But but it's that it's that Western thing.
- 23:09SPEAKER_03: Dalton's not leaving for the money, he's leaving because his his job is done.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:14SPEAKER_03: He's on to the next the next crisis.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: Although you know the second he leaves, it's going back to whatever it was.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 23:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 23:23SPEAKER_03: No, the confidence of one man was the only thing holding that business together.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: Um drives away and he like chucks his key he like gets out of the car and chucks his keys at this homeless guy, and the guy's like, what do I look like?
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: Uh um uh a valet, and he goes, keep the car.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: And I was like, What wait, what?
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: It never comes back.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: And he goes and gets a better he gets a get it goes and gets a better car out of like the the garage, I think.
- 23:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like he It doesn't really make sense at the time, but no, that's what I was thinking.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: I was like, why is he like doing this?
- 24:00SPEAKER_03: It ends up being a really fun setup, yeah.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: Um he drives to the he arrives at the the double deuce bar, it's run down, there's fights, there's drugs, um, the music is being played behind a cage because like and he's just kind of scoping it out.
- 24:19SPEAKER_03: He's not on the clock yet.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: He's just kind of like, what am I doing?
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: He's observing everything.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: And nobody knows who he is yet.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: And so like you find out that the singer is blind, the singer of the bar of the band is blind, and he you find this out because Dalton sneaks up on him and he does a little shift fingers to the rest of the band.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: He says, This will be funny.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: And you realize that he knows him.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, from other from other bad from other places they're gonna like go from like just like they all circle each bad part.
- 24:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I guess.
- 24:55SPEAKER_03: This is the only this is the only thing that I want to know is real.
- 25:00SPEAKER_03: This is the only research I wish I'd done into this movie, is like art was because when I was like a young person, I would go to like music clubs, like I would go see like a live band.
- 25:12SPEAKER_03: And like theoretically you could dance, but there wasn't really space to dance.
- 25:15SPEAKER_03: There's a space for people to kind of like stand shoulder to shoulder.
- 25:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:19SPEAKER_03: I've never been, and I so I've only done this in cities.
- 25:21SPEAKER_03: So I have no real understanding of whether or not America is just dotted with these big things.
- 25:28SPEAKER_03: I mean, I'm a s I assume probably, or this movie wouldn't have gotten made.
- 25:33SPEAKER_03: Um, but I'm very curious how much of this is like sort of a real thing.
- 25:39SPEAKER_03: Like gangster movies are always about like nightclubs.
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, certainly at the time.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:46SPEAKER_03: But like I that's a trope I'm more familiar with.
- 25:48SPEAKER_03: Like gangster movies always have like nightclubs or like cabarets.
- 25:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:52SPEAKER_03: And I I assume that this is just like the the rural equivalent, is like you all drive down to this like giant place and there's a band and you drink and you see all your friends, and that's like the entire community Saturday night is like localized to this one spot.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: I mean my closest experience of that was when I was working at a summer camp in Pennsylvania, and we had like it was like rural rural Pennsylvania, and we had like nothing to do, and we all got driven down to this like one tiny place that was like literally the one place that everyone goes to.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: And it w but I guess they had like a did they have a band?
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: There wasn't like a huge bar fight every time you were there.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: No, but it was it was the sort of place it felt like it could have had.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: Got it.
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: Got it.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: It but it was nowhere near the size of these places in this movie.
- 26:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and then and then either in reality or in just this heightened reality, there's like a whispered network of who the best bouncers are and like uh and like blind singers who go from town to town taking sinking gigs, taking like residencies.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: Isn't the singer isn't the band or the singer like a famous singer?
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: No idea.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: I have no idea.
- 27:08SPEAKER_03: They certainly don't yeah, at the I mean, certainly the people in the movie don't think so.
- 27:12SPEAKER_03: They hate him.
- 27:13SPEAKER_03: Oh no, I mean in real life.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no clue.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: No clue.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: I'm guessing not then.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: I'm sure I read it or something and then it immediately forgot to be.
- 27:23SPEAKER_03: I'd like never heard of it.
- 27:24SPEAKER_03: There's famous people in this movie.
- 27:25SPEAKER_03: Like the casting is really good.
- 27:26SPEAKER_03: Like the wrestler Terry Funk is like the previous bouncer.
- 27:30SPEAKER_03: Um, which is I think brilliant.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: Uh it's very obvious there's wrestlers in this movie.
- 27:35SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 27:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's a very physical, like you were saying about the choreography, like that's not a joke.
- 27:40SPEAKER_03: Like No, it's very good choreography as well.
- 27:42SPEAKER_03: Patrick Squasey, like, this is a great double dancing uh dirty dancing double feature.
- 27:47SPEAKER_03: Uh because like you just you do kind of get to marvel at like even though they've even though they've like painted this dirt bag skin over everything, it's like, yeah, he is a dancer, and these are dancing moves.
- 27:59SPEAKER_03: Like the beauty of his movements is rooted in dance.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's perfect for this movie.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: He really like especially coming off of Dirty Dancing, you're right.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: Like, he is like he really needs the choreography is perfect and everything for him.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: Um and the only one the one thing I have, the one issue I have is like he's too he's almost too attractive to be the bouncer.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: He's a super heroic figure.
- 28:30SPEAKER_03: Um and once people once people at the the Double Duce find out that he's Dalton, uh they they all start whispering, that's Dalton, that's Dalton, and it becomes clear that everybody has heard of the legendary cooler Dalton, and then the the this the singer gets whispered that Dalton did something cool.
- 28:47SPEAKER_03: He did some bouncer shit, and then like respectfully got a woman to stop dancing on a table.
- 28:53SPEAKER_03: And uh then the singer says, The name's Dalton.
- 28:59SPEAKER_03: And in this very kind of, you know, again, like this very screenwriting book kind of way, it becomes clear that like the hero has arrived in this in this extremely official capacity that changes the it changes the temperature of the town.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: Um one scene that I found just like really funny, just awful as well, but when when uh when he's still kind of scoping the place out, there's the there's the scene of like uh a guy and his and his like girlfriend and he's and these these guys are like leering over her and he's like oh if you want uh you can kiss you can kiss both of her boos for like twenty dollars, ten dollars each.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: And and he s and the guys start like just like grabbing on them endlessly.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: He goes, when are you gonna kiss them?
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: He goes, I can't, I don't have$20.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: And it just causes like the massive fight.
- 29:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's the last that's the last draw.
- 29:55SPEAKER_03: Everybody, all of the non of the the whole movie is in this heightened reality, but all of the unnamed characters are cartoon characters.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: So ridiculous.
- 30:05SPEAKER_03: Like there's one guy who's just like standing there laughing like a bird, and eventually he gets hit in the face with a bottle.
- 30:14SPEAKER_03: It's like three Stooges level violence.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: They have the none of them have anything to do in this movie except for fight.
- 30:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, just sit there to fight into enemy caricatures.
- 30:26SPEAKER_03: But that really, I mean, that's another that that like gag.
- 30:30SPEAKER_03: Uh and I think I think gag is the right word.
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: Gag in like almost like the almost like the vaudeville or the carnival sense.
- 30:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 30:38SPEAKER_03: Like like um all of the little all of the little uh uh stunts and jokes and one-liners in mini scenes, they're all like really specific.
- 30:48SPEAKER_03: Like they all feel like like the bit the bit with the guy who who pays uh he takes the the$20 offer to kiss the woman's breasts, and then he says he doesn't have$20, that feels like a joke out of a joke book.
- 31:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah like that feels like a dirty joke that they just like reenacted for this movie.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: It really does.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: It's so stupid.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: It's um and I I wrote down like this is insane at this point, like because it's just so like but this is so early into the movie as well.
- 31:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, this is just already.
- 31:20SPEAKER_03: This is about 30 minutes, 30 minutes in, and Dalton uh and Dalton is just watching the place go to hell to sort of like get a sense of what he's doing.
- 31:28SPEAKER_03: Oh, totally.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: It's not even 30 minutes, it's hot it's 15 minutes, and that's it, because I wrote it down.
- 31:33SPEAKER_03: No kidding.
- 31:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 31:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 31:34SPEAKER_03: It's 15 minutes in.
- 31:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so he's starting to cross into that sort of act one threshold.
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: Because he wrote I wrote down he buys a used car, and I wrote down this is his third in 15 minutes.
- 31:46SPEAKER_03: Because he has a really nice Mercedes.
- 31:48SPEAKER_03: He comes in his real car the first night.
- 31:50SPEAKER_03: And you're like, oh, he so you're like, he buys a bad car to do this job because everybody hates the bouncer, and that's why he gave away his previous one.
- 31:59SPEAKER_03: And it's it's really clever.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:01SPEAKER_03: It's it's great, like, you know, it's great show don't tell uh sort of like setting the great writing, yeah.
- 32:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's like setting the the rules of of what it is to be of what it is to be a cooler.
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: Because it sounds so it looks so stupid at first.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh, this is ridiculous.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: And then when you actually see what the reason behind it, you're like, oh I that's genius.
- 32:24SPEAKER_03: That's so clever.
- 32:25SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 32:25SPEAKER_03: Like a lot of the movie is cool for the sake of cool.
- 32:28SPEAKER_03: Like Dalton is just the coolest and best person.
- 32:30SPEAKER_03: But it seems like it's gonna be that.
- 32:32SPEAKER_03: But some of it is motivated in like story and like his like his needs and his sort of like his earned wisdom, versus versus just being like a you know, like an 80s, 90s badass.
- 32:44SPEAKER_03: Like, there's a lot of that.
- 32:45SPEAKER_03: But a lot of it is also like you are the movie is teaching you what his life is like.
- 32:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: Because he also then the next thing is that he he rents a room at the farm, uh, which is it's overlooking uh you realize it's overlooking the mansion, which is uh West uh what's his name?
- 33:07SPEAKER_03: Um I also cannot remember the name of the band.
- 33:11SPEAKER_03: I wrote down his I wrote down his name.
- 33:13SPEAKER_03: The very rich man in the Panama.
- 33:16SPEAKER_03: It's something Wesley.
- 33:17SPEAKER_03: It's Brad Wesley.
- 33:18SPEAKER_03: It's Brad Wesley.
- 33:19SPEAKER_03: It's Brad Wesley, because I remember uh uh you kind of learn it at the hardware store uh when he introduces himself, and the idea that the idea that the mobster who runs the town is named Brad.
- 33:29SPEAKER_03: Like a little bit.
- 33:30SPEAKER_03: They call him Brad more than Wesley.
- 33:31SPEAKER_00: They call him Brad a lot more than Brad.
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: Brad Wesley or Wesley.
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 33:35SPEAKER_03: Like Wesley is a great, like Mr.
- 33:37SPEAKER_03: Wesley.
- 33:38SPEAKER_03: Like that's a great evil man name.
- 33:41SPEAKER_03: Some guy.
- 33:42SPEAKER_03: But I get it, I get it, because everything's very like down to earth.
- 33:45SPEAKER_03: Roadhouse is a very, you know, it's this is this is it's not real America, but it's a fun portrayal of what they imagine real America to be.
- 33:54SPEAKER_03: So you got this low-rent bad guy who's just yeah, I don't even know.
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: I don't know, like I think he just runs like a successful dentistry business or something.
- 34:03SPEAKER_03: I think that his net worth is probably about two million dollars.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: I don't rec yeah.
- 34:09SPEAKER_03: Like he's not in the kingpin, he's just yeah, he's just the richest guy in like a small town where the cost of living is is relatively attainable.
- 34:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: But he he does have a helicopter.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: Uh that can be a good thing.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: He does have a helicopter, that's a good point.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: Which he flies over the farm to like start all the horses and everything.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: This is like this is where we learn that he's evil, like you say, like you were saying earlier.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: Um But you find out that Dalton can rent the farm, uh, the place at the farm for$100 a month, and he gets asked, Do you have enough money for that?
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: And you he's like, Yeah, I'm sure I do.
- 34:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you can kind of tell$500 a night.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: You can kind of tell.
- 34:49SPEAKER_03: Patrick Swayze is very like he's very cool through this movie.
- 34:52SPEAKER_03: He's very even keeled, he's very respectful to everybody.
- 34:55SPEAKER_03: You know, he has that kind of he calls the farmer like yes, sir, no, sir.
- 34:59SPEAKER_03: And the farmer says that calling him sir is like putting an outhouse on an elevator.
- 35:04unknown: Yeah.
- 35:04SPEAKER_03: Because the whole movie is written that way.
- 35:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 35:07SPEAKER_03: So you know, you know that you know that uh Patrick Swayze is this cool role model.
- 35:11SPEAKER_03: Um, but he does let himself he makes a little performance choice, I think, when he the farmer asks him if he has a hundred dollars a month.
- 35:20SPEAKER_03: He kind of cracks a little bit.
- 35:22SPEAKER_03: He like he like smiles or laughs.
- 35:23SPEAKER_03: He's like, Yeah, I can I can do that.
- 35:25SPEAKER_03: I'm the richest man here who doesn't have a helicopter.
- 35:30SPEAKER_00: He does say there's a couple of great lines here.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: He goes, Um, if it keeps you in the good graces of the church.
- 35:36SPEAKER_00: And uh and then uh the guy the the father replies, Ain't it peculiar how how money does Oh it's so great.
- 35:44SPEAKER_03: It is this yeah, it is this weird it's this weird class It's this weird class satire until it's not it's yeah because we're going we're heading in a very particular direction that undercuts that seemingly undercuts the rest of the movie.
- 36:00SPEAKER_03: It's so fascinating.
- 36:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 36:01SPEAKER_00: But it's also the only logical thing that can happen And uh so Swayze starts his job and he tells he starts up like talking to everyone and he's like because he's been observing them all this whole time, he's like, right, what everyone is gonna do now is be nice and you're gonna do it this way, you're gonna like you're gonna calmly escort people out, you're not gonna fight them unless they fight back, you're gonna even if they say something mean to you, you're just gonna ignore it and all this sort of stuff.
- 36:31SPEAKER_00: Uh everyone is breaking the rules immediately.
- 36:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 36:34SPEAKER_03: Nobody, nobody, but nobody buys it.
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: Um and so he gets this guy, Steve, gets fired and uh for having sex in the back of the He is fully nude.
- 36:46SPEAKER_03: His girlfriend's fully nude.
- 36:48SPEAKER_03: His girlfriend's uh skirt and shirt are hiked up, but he is he is fully disrobed to have sex on his break.
- 36:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, on his breakfast.
- 36:55SPEAKER_03: He tells the woman uh you're gonna be my new Saturday night thing, my regular Saturday night thing.
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: And then the bartender is fired for stealing money from the from the till.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: And Dalton leaves uh for the night, comes out and finds his tires slashed, his windscreen smashed in, and that's when you realize, oh, that's why he's done this.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: That's why he buys a car for that very reason.
- 37:21SPEAKER_03: And hides his that's why he hides his Mercedes in the barn.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: And that's why he picks up a like four or five tires, like about like at least four tires.
- 37:29SPEAKER_00: I think he like chucks in the room.
- 37:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, when he's buying it, they show him, they show him buying a lot of tires, and it's very, it's very funny and it's very it's very curious.
- 37:36SPEAKER_03: It's it's a good it raises a question visually.
- 37:40SPEAKER_00: He he kind of smirks as well when he like when he goes out and sees the scene he's like those boys.
- 37:48SPEAKER_03: That's how I know I'm getting through to them like a like a like a high school teacher.
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: Um but then this weird thing happens, which I thought was gonna they were gonna be I thought was gonna be more of a thing.
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: This woman, Denise, who is like working in the club, she shows up at Dalton's when he's like sleeping.
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: She shows up with her bre with breakfast and it was like I thought she was gonna be like the romantic leader.
- 38:17SPEAKER_03: Oh no, I don't think so.
- 38:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean it is that is one weird thing about the movie is that I think like in a in like a hyper competent like 2020s movie, um the love interest would arrive like much earlier in the film.
- 38:33SPEAKER_03: This this feels more like an 80s, 90s pacing where she just kind of like she's just randomly plopped there.
- 38:40SPEAKER_03: Kind of like 45 minutes in.
- 38:43SPEAKER_03: Although the waitress from the bar does marvel at does marvel at Dalton's ass.
- 38:48SPEAKER_03: Umbe it's just a setup for that, I guess.
- 38:51unknown: Yeah.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: Or how easy it is to find him?
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 38:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's it's sort of I mean, what it does what it does functionally is it does it does kind of two things.
- 39:03SPEAKER_03: It doesn't do a lot for the story.
- 39:05SPEAKER_03: Um it kind of shows that he's instantly everybody's hero.
- 39:08SPEAKER_03: But because he's so competent and so lovingly shot, I think you sort of have accomplished that already.
- 39:13SPEAKER_03: But the other thing that it does is it foreshadows that um in firing the bartender, uh, she says that he's looking uh she's looking at a dead man.
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 39:24SPEAKER_03: It's sort of like because he's only been he's only had obvious successes so far.
- 39:31SPEAKER_03: With the exception of the collateral damage of his car, he's only been successful so far.
- 39:36SPEAKER_03: So it's a scene that accomplishes both showing Patrick Swayze's amazing butt and uh implying that he's like he's like crossed over some red line.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, and then we see Wesley driving dangerously and almost running dolted off the road.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: It's so good.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: It's so good.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: And it's another it's and that accomplishes so much.
- 40:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's like the helicopter.
- 40:01SPEAKER_03: It's like, oh, in this town you get out of this guy's way.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: He doesn't even notice.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he doesn't flinch, he just keeps going.
- 40:09SPEAKER_03: Singing along to uh Life Could Be a Dream.
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:15SPEAKER_00: And uh to get over this uh Dalton is doing Tai Chi, and you learn like, oh, this is how he calms himself down and stays sane.
- 40:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there's there's some sort of like magic exoticism where it's like this guy is better than other guys because he has like mastered the the secrets of the East.
- 40:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 40:35SPEAKER_00: Which is also a big thing of the 80s as well, to like stick that in.
- 40:38SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 40:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 40:39SPEAKER_03: That's where all the magic and wonder was sort of rooted in uh in pop culture.
- 40:46SPEAKER_00: But actually, also one of the other things about this is I think the best scenes in this movie are when we see those the like the those martial art kind of moves as opposed to just punching.
- 40:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean that's why that's his like superpower, right?
- 41:02SPEAKER_03: Like that's why he's that's why he's the best.
- 41:04SPEAKER_03: I mean he's very he's very Batman in a lot of ways.
- 41:09SPEAKER_03: Like he's like if Batman was poor and drove around the country being Batman at individual businesses.
- 41:18SPEAKER_03: It's true.
- 41:19SPEAKER_03: But yeah, he's like he's like an unlikely, you know, he's an outsider.
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: Although I wouldn't call him poor, no, it's$500 a night.
- 41:26SPEAKER_03: 5,000 up front,$500 a night.
- 41:30SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, he's he's not like uh, you know, he's he's a superheroic figure in the sense that like you know, John McLean is a superheroic figure, you know, and his his quote unquote superpower is just like his ability to tolerate pain and his commitment to his family.
- 41:46SPEAKER_03: Like he is he is very much just like you know, more in that mold of a Western hero, like a stranger comes to town and he has a secret past, and that that secret past is what makes him the problem solver.
- 41:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:59SPEAKER_00: Um one one uh thing here happens that is that the guy that was fired, Pat, you find out that he is actually uh Brad's nephew.
- 42:11SPEAKER_00: Oh no! And so he has to get his job back, obviously, as the bartender.
- 42:18SPEAKER_00: And uh but Brad Wesley controls all the liquor in this town.
- 42:22SPEAKER_03: You can't you can't have a bar you can't have you can't serve liquor without Brad Wesley.
- 42:26SPEAKER_03: So maybe that's where he earned his money, through the liquor.
- 42:29SPEAKER_03: That's gotta be it, yeah.
- 42:31SPEAKER_03: That makes much more sense.
- 42:34SPEAKER_00: People like liquor a lot.
- 42:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:37SPEAKER_00: And um Dalton gets into a fight with him uh and gets slashed in the in in the chest, in the stomach.
- 42:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:46SPEAKER_03: And um And we've seen him sew up, we've seen him sew up a previous knife wound at the bandstand in the opening scene.
- 42:52SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 42:53SPEAKER_03: But we can tell that this one is this one is worse.
- 42:55SPEAKER_00: This one's deep, yeah.
- 42:57SPEAKER_00: And he goes, so he goes to the hospital, and this woman they refer to on IMDB as Doc.
- 43:02SPEAKER_00: That's because he calls her Doc.
- 43:05SPEAKER_03: The most improbably beautiful, like 80s babe doctor with it's very much that thing of like, well, if she's wearing glasses, she's ugly logic.
- 43:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 43:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 43:17SPEAKER_03: So she comes out with glasses and uh, you know, it's a doctor's ponytail, but it's this perfect blonde braid that goes down like her entire back.
- 43:28SPEAKER_03: She's obviously if you cut into the movie in the middle, you would just assume immediately that she was one of the stars of the movie.
- 43:35SPEAKER_03: She is not she is not passing for a regular doctor.
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: They uh but the funniest th the funniest thing is you find out about his past as well here.
- 43:46SPEAKER_00: He's he's had uh in the past he's had nine staples, thirty-one broken bones, two bullet wounds, nine punctures, uh nine puncture wounds, and four screws.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: That's right, give or take.
- 44:01SPEAKER_03: And he carries his medical records around.
- 44:04SPEAKER_03: So did he.
- 44:06SPEAKER_03: So did he.
- 44:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he broke it.
- 44:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because you're right.
- 44:08SPEAKER_00: He carries it around because it's easier.
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: He says it's just quicker to carry it around with it because he gets hurt so much.
- 44:12SPEAKER_03: It's very, it's very cleverly done, and there's this great shot where they show um in his medical records, they show like a drawing of a uh the diagram of a man with all the places where his previous injuries have gone.
- 44:23SPEAKER_03: And it's it's they could have done it, you know, they could have done like a shot of his back with all of these like prosthetic scars on it.
- 44:30SPEAKER_03: Um but in it, I think it's very clever, like abstracting it, uh, you kind of get like the totality of his history of violence.
- 44:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:38SPEAKER_00: It's very bad.
- 44:39SPEAKER_00: Like it's it's it's brutal.
- 44:40SPEAKER_03: So they flirt, they flirt you know relentlessly.
- 44:44SPEAKER_03: They do movie flirting like immediately.
- 44:46SPEAKER_03: Where they're both very cool, you know, they're both very above it.
- 44:50SPEAKER_00: They're both yeah, they're both the coolest characters in this movie.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they're the only the only quietly confident people.
- 44:59SPEAKER_00: Um and at this at this point, uh Sam Elliott I know, it's right before this.
- 45:05SPEAKER_00: Uh you find out all the businesses have to pay 10% uh to uh Brad as a as as like to keep them going.
- 45:14SPEAKER_03: Right, because he's because he's been he has to go to the car, the auto parts guy all the time because his car keeps getting jacked.
- 45:20SPEAKER_03: So that's where he meets Red.
- 45:22SPEAKER_00: And Red runs the we find out also is the uh uncle of uh Doc.
- 45:28SPEAKER_00: Of sexy doctor, yeah.
- 45:29SPEAKER_00: Of sexy doctor.
- 45:31SPEAKER_00: Because he has a picture of her in in the in the autopilot shop.
- 45:35SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 45:36SPEAKER_03: Which is it's a little yeah, it's a little much.
- 45:41SPEAKER_03: I mean, like I said, there's a lot of really good visual storytelling in this movie.
- 45:44SPEAKER_03: Um there are some of them that are a little clunkier.
- 45:47SPEAKER_03: Just make him her dad.
- 45:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, or yeah, I don't know why.
- 45:52SPEAKER_03: Maybe that's like too sad.
- 45:54SPEAKER_03: Um because something bad happens.
- 45:56SPEAKER_03: Because later on.
- 45:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's just it's just removed enough.
- 46:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that it's it's a tragedy, but it's not one that, you know, it's not one that would be debilitating for her as a character moving through the story.
- 46:11SPEAKER_00: But yeah, so like we find out that Sam Elliott, uh he calls Sam he gives a call to Sam Elliott's character, and like and then like it's that scene that you were saying earlier, which is um in this other like rundown bar, and he gets it's the he sprays down the uh the RV guys and like assault the soldiers and like right before they're about to go to war or something like that.
- 46:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I guess.
- 46:33SPEAKER_00: I don't know where they're being or they've come back from war.
- 46:36SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 46:36SPEAKER_03: It's it's movie soldiers, you know.
- 46:38SPEAKER_03: They're it's our boys, they're having fun, they're cutting, they're letting off steam before s before they all die, before something bad happens to them.
- 46:45SPEAKER_00: And I I think he says to him at this point, have you um are you okay?
- 46:49SPEAKER_00: Do you need me or anything?
- 46:50SPEAKER_00: And he thinks he's I think he says I've got this.
- 46:53SPEAKER_03: Uh does Sam Elliott does to uh Sam Elliott does to Patrick Swayze or vice versa?
- 46:59SPEAKER_00: Uh vice versa.
- 47:00SPEAKER_00: So I think that Patrick Swayze asks uh sorry, Sam Eddie asked Patrick Swayze if he's alright.
- 47:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:05SPEAKER_03: And in yeah, this is just the check-in.
- 47:08SPEAKER_03: This is this is so that when when Wade Garrett does show up, it's not the first time you've seen him.
- 47:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:15SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 47:16SPEAKER_00: But and he he does show up.
- 47:18SPEAKER_00: He does show up.
- 47:20SPEAKER_02: Because ultimately Dalton cannot handle this alone.
- 47:22SPEAKER_00: No, because he goes outside to be beaten up by everyone.
- 47:26SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 47:27SPEAKER_03: Everyone teams up and they don't like the news.
- 47:29SPEAKER_03: They all team up and beat him by news.
- 47:31SPEAKER_00: Sam Elliott comes in and saves him.
- 47:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so they call Wade Garrett because Wade Garrett's the best.
- 47:37SPEAKER_03: Wade Garrett.
- 47:37SPEAKER_00: Wade Garrett.
- 47:39SPEAKER_00: And they go to um so Doc shows up and sees this going on, and take and they go to a diner.
- 47:47SPEAKER_03: Right, because he asks her out at the at the hospital.
- 47:50SPEAKER_03: He says if you ever want to come by the double days and get a cup of coffee.
- 47:52SPEAKER_03: Because Patrick Swayze doesn't drink on the job, he drinks black coffee.
- 47:56SPEAKER_00: No, you never see him drink, not once, actually.
- 47:58SPEAKER_03: Yes, he might be he might be totally sober.
- 48:00SPEAKER_03: He doesn't take um pain medication in the hospital either.
- 48:03SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 48:04SPEAKER_03: So it's it's strongly implied that his body is a taffle.
- 48:07SPEAKER_03: He doesn't eat and he doesn't eat junk food.
- 48:09SPEAKER_03: When uh when the waitress brings him breakfast, he only takes the coffee.
- 48:15SPEAKER_00: I didn't even notice that.
- 48:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so it's this very it is this very sort of like quietly, you know, Batman like you know, I don't I'm I'm doing little, you know, but it's it's really interesting because it what it does, among other things, is like it makes him seem a little bit more than human.
- 48:32SPEAKER_03: Like that he doesn't have human concerns, he's a creature of pure tai chi.
- 48:36SPEAKER_03: Like all he needs is Tai Chi and coffee.
- 48:39SPEAKER_03: He doesn't eat human food, he doesn't take drugs.
- 48:43SPEAKER_03: In order to be this guy, he has to be this sort of like you know, this this uh made of steel.
- 48:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 48:51SPEAKER_00: Um but they do they kiss at this point as well.
- 48:54SPEAKER_00: Uh this is the kiss for the first time, uh, and then he gets dragged to Wesley's house where he sees that girl's been beaten up uh because she likes she's trying to hide it, but she's also trying to show him at the same time.
- 49:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 49:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 49:07SPEAKER_00: She's kind of like covering her face and then like moving it to so she's gonna be able to get it.
- 49:11SPEAKER_03: Making sure that the local hero knows that she's in danger.
- 49:15SPEAKER_03: This is a bad guy.
- 49:17SPEAKER_00: Um uh what's his name?
- 49:22SPEAKER_00: Brad asks uh Dalton how much if I bought the bar, how much That's right, that's right.
- 49:30SPEAKER_00: He tries to tempt him, tries to do a deal with the devil.
- 49:34SPEAKER_00: And he goes, No amount of money could ever make.
- 49:36SPEAKER_00: That's right, because I'm a good guy.
- 49:41SPEAKER_03: Which is such a hero's hero's thing to do.
- 49:44SPEAKER_03: It's it's perfect because the stakes are ultimately like, you know, like this is like how much do you really know about the guy who owns it now?
- 49:51SPEAKER_03: You know, he's just like a different millionaire.
- 49:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we know nothing about him.
- 49:56SPEAKER_03: But he's but he's a nice millionaire.
- 49:58SPEAKER_03: He's a nice millionaire who just wants a fun hangout for the local people.
- 50:01SPEAKER_00: He just wants a nice place.
- 50:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:03SPEAKER_00: Uh but the bar, the butt so at this point the bar is busy and running well, and this is what I was talking about earlier, where it's become very corporate, and like they're all wearing like these out, like these.
- 50:14SPEAKER_03: Like matching, like matching short-sleeved polos.
- 50:17SPEAKER_03: It's amazing.
- 50:19SPEAKER_03: And this is what this is what I think is so interesting about this movie, and so specifically like late 80s about this movie, is that Generation X and millennials, and like I assume people younger than that, are so addicted to authenticity, like they just want like, oh, I don't want to go to New York because like I wish that I'd been born into like the New York of the 70s, where you could like eat a eat a rat and get your head cut off.
- 50:45SPEAKER_03: And the dream, like the the final the logical conclusion of Dalton's success is this very like disnification, you know, or like Starbucks-ification, they call it in World's End, where all the the bars end up having this kind of very consistent so he turns the he turns the double deuce into a place that could functionally operate in modern Times Square with these incredibly organized like a fun place.
- 51:14SPEAKER_03: It's so much less fun than with all the violence because the dream, and you realize like, oh yeah, because that's what this guy like wanted.
- 51:23SPEAKER_03: He wanted to have a functioning business so that he could retire.
- 51:28SPEAKER_03: And the matching the matching uniforms to identify the bouncers.
- 51:32SPEAKER_03: So it's so weird.
- 51:33SPEAKER_03: Because you've I don't know if they I don't know if they genuinely thought that this was like what success looked like because it was written during the Reagan era.
- 51:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:41SPEAKER_03: And they were like it has to be.
- 51:42SPEAKER_00: I think it has to be.
- 51:43SPEAKER_03: Or if they had just written themselves into a corner where it's like this is the only thing, like, this is the logical conclusion of Dalton's of Dalton's improvements.
- 51:50SPEAKER_03: But like they all look like they work at Dave and Buster's.
- 51:54SPEAKER_03: Yes, that's exactly so lame and boring, and but everybody's happier and safer, and it's like it's really seems to be like everything's you know, this is his kind of first like false victory.
- 52:07SPEAKER_03: Like it really seems like everything's firing on all cylinders.
- 52:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay, it's happy and it's safe.
- 52:13SPEAKER_00: But you know, it's the opposite of everything that makes this movie cool.
- 52:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's the opposite of it's the opposite of everything that makes this movie cool.
- 52:23SPEAKER_03: And it retroactively recasts Dalton as like kind of a nerd.
- 52:26SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, he doesn't drink.
- 52:28SPEAKER_03: He's super good at fighting, and he's really confident, so like you think he's a cool guy.
- 52:32SPEAKER_03: But the fighting is the only thing about it about it in this cool.
- 52:36SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 52:36SPEAKER_03: And then you realize, like, oh, like he's just like sort of like he's like a middle manager who comes in with the binder and says, like, you know, like uh the office space manager making Jennifer Anderson wear the correct number of shirt buttons.
- 52:51SPEAKER_03: He's just that, but with karate.
- 52:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:56SPEAKER_00: Um so if they but they go outside and the guys are in the monster truck, and he he completely completely he's completely oblivious to them, he completely misses them.
- 53:09SPEAKER_00: And he's like, How do you miss a monster truck?
- 53:11SPEAKER_03: The monster truck that one of Brad Wesley's henchmen drives around in like it's a regular car.
- 53:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 53:16SPEAKER_00: And Dalton but Dalton completely misses it.
- 53:19SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 53:20SPEAKER_00: It's so funny.
- 53:20SPEAKER_00: He gets tricked.
- 53:21SPEAKER_00: But they go back, they go back to his, uh, him and Doc, they go back to his and they have this very funny sex scene.
- 53:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they have crazy fireplace sex.
- 53:31SPEAKER_03: And uh there's an interview with uh Kelly Lynch uh in the AV club where she says that um because uh her her husband is a writer who has worked with Bill Murray a lot, she says that uh Bill Bill Murray and all of his brothers uh are are watching television constantly and they call him whenever Roadhouse is on to tell him that Patrick Swayze is having sex with his wife.
- 53:56SPEAKER_03: And that's like a running that's like a running joke in that entire family, is that they call their buddy to make fun of him.
- 54:01SPEAKER_00: That sounds like such a I was gonna say a Bill Murray thing, but just a Murray family thing.
- 54:06SPEAKER_00: Apparently, yeah.
- 54:07SPEAKER_00: I mean it's a very Bill Murray thing.
- 54:08SPEAKER_00: It does, yeah.
- 54:10SPEAKER_00: But apparently it's an all of them thing.
- 54:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 54:15SPEAKER_00: Uh and um right now Sam Elliott shows up, but I guess he shows up at the bar.
- 54:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 54:23SPEAKER_03: I think I don't remember if Dalton calls him because he's in trouble, or if Sam Elliott just knows he's in trouble because he's Sam Elliott.
- 54:29SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, sorry, this is where he gets saved.
- 54:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're right.
- 54:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 54:32SPEAKER_00: So I thought that was earlier in the movie.
- 54:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's not.
- 54:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Sam Elliott comes in because like Dalton can't actually handle the double deuce.
- 54:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 54:40SPEAKER_00: Um and they got they all go about to like have a drink or whatever, and and and uh Sam Elliott starts dancing with Doc.
- 54:48SPEAKER_00: Yes, immediately.
- 54:50SPEAKER_03: Well, because he's so he's so good looking.
- 54:52SPEAKER_03: He's they he's a different kind of good looking than Patrick Swayze.
- 54:56SPEAKER_03: But he's like the rugged good looking.
- 54:58SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, but it's the only like it's the only human they could find who could overshadow Patrick Swayze.
- 55:04SPEAKER_03: It's like we've accidentally created this Greek god.
- 55:07SPEAKER_03: Now we need to kind of think laterally and come up with somebody who like what does if this guy is such a cartoon hero, what does his hero look like?
- 55:16SPEAKER_03: And it ends up being Sam Elliott with long salt and pepper hair.
- 55:20SPEAKER_03: He's constantly sweeping his fingers through.
- 55:24SPEAKER_00: But he starts dancing with her and he says to her, like, I want you for myself.
- 55:30SPEAKER_00: That is a little weird.
- 55:31SPEAKER_02: That is a little weird.
- 55:32SPEAKER_00: And it's never addressed again.
- 55:34SPEAKER_00: No, that doesn't come up.
- 55:37SPEAKER_00: And I was like, is he gonna turn out to be a bad guy?
- 55:40SPEAKER_03: Is he gonna try and I think I mean if I had to if I had to guess as at the writing's motivation at that point, I think it's just to show that like it's a bit of fun, and it's to show that Sam Elliott is like a complete person, you know, that he's an admirable, that he's a strong and admirable and complete person, and that like he you know, he's not he's not Dalton's like little sidekick, he's like a legendary figure.
- 56:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 56:04SPEAKER_00: Uh but we do get a little bit of Dalton's past hit, because we learn about they say like he says Sam says to him, like, what are you uh what's wrong?
- 56:12SPEAKER_00: I can see you're still living in the past.
- 56:14SPEAKER_00: Um she was married, and um how are you to know that?
- 56:19SPEAKER_00: He said, like um she didn't tell you, and so uh when someone points a gun at you, you either die or you kill them.
- 56:26SPEAKER_00: And so you find out Dalton has killed someone.
- 56:28SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 56:29SPEAKER_00: Because it's always been it's been rumoured up until that point.
- 56:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they talk about uh when Dalton shows up for the first time, somebody says, I heard he ripped a guy's throat out, and then he does a little pantomime of like what that would look like.
- 56:40SPEAKER_00: Which is uh laying the groundwork for later.
- 56:42SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 56:43SPEAKER_00: Turns out to be incredibly accurate.
- 56:46SPEAKER_00: Uh Red's place gets blown up.
- 56:50SPEAKER_00: The uh uh the what's it called?
- 56:54SPEAKER_00: The the car the car repair place.
- 56:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just gets completely destroyed.
- 56:58SPEAKER_00: And so it's first of all, it looks like a fire, but no, it's like a full-on explosion.
- 57:03SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 57:04SPEAKER_03: It would be very because this is a lawless town, it would be very difficult to assume that this was that this was an accident.
- 57:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 57:13SPEAKER_00: There's no way this is an accident.
- 57:18SPEAKER_00: And Brad Brad's like shows up to the bar and is like very cocky about it and everything.
- 57:27SPEAKER_00: He just like shows up and he makes this woman dance on stage.
- 57:31SPEAKER_00: Which is against Dalton's Ross.
- 57:33SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 57:34SPEAKER_00: She starts stripping, uh and uh Dalton tries to take her off the stage, and then he ends up in a fight with uh Jimmy with the pool cue.
- 57:46SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 57:46SPEAKER_03: And Jimmy's like the main Jimmy is Brad's Dalton.
- 57:50SPEAKER_03: Jimmy is the guy with the black mullet and the conspicuous earring, so you can remember he has that kind of it might as well be an eye patch.
- 57:57SPEAKER_03: That earring is like, oh, this is the real bad guy.
- 58:00SPEAKER_03: This is like the mini.
- 58:01SPEAKER_03: This is the mini boss.
- 58:03SPEAKER_03: And when everybody else is screwing up, he says I should have sent Jimmy.
- 58:07SPEAKER_00: And also Jimmy's the one that knows like Kung Fu, I guess.
- 58:10SPEAKER_03: Right, right.
- 58:11SPEAKER_03: He can fight Dalton in like, you know, Dalton world.
- 58:14SPEAKER_03: He can like he can like transcend and use martial arts to actually have like a chance.
- 58:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:20SPEAKER_00: But uh so Sam fights Jimmy at this point, um and then they all then it ends up being like this whole giant fight, and then um then Dalton goes to protect Sam and um uh what's his name?
- 58:36SPEAKER_00: Uh Brad stops it with a gunshot and says, and but that's when they say, like, oh you scared him.
- 58:42SPEAKER_00: You scared Brad, and he's like, no, I did not.
- 58:47SPEAKER_00: He's like the only one aware, he's not scared of me.
- 58:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 58:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 58:52SPEAKER_03: Uh it's it's a very like this is the real villain, things are coming to a head.
- 58:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:58SPEAKER_00: Dalton's the only self Dalton and Sam uh and uh yeah, Sam Elliott's character, the only one that's like self-aware in this but he take he does take out his anger though, because he don't he goes out and gets the monster truck to like run over all the cars.
- 59:15SPEAKER_03: Right, his revenge, I don't fully understand this.
- 59:18SPEAKER_03: His revenge is that like I guess there's a the the local car dealership is like uh on Dalton's side or like is implied to have like transgressed in some way.
- 59:30SPEAKER_03: So yeah, the big the big revenge and one of the big set pieces in the movie is that this monster this monster truck drives through a car dealership.
- 59:38SPEAKER_03: It's destructive.
- 59:39SPEAKER_00: It's the most insane thing in the whole movie.
- 59:41SPEAKER_03: It's so crazy.
- 59:43SPEAKER_03: And at this point, you just remember that there are no cops, there's no local press, like there's no Everyone tells him to leave town.
- 59:51SPEAKER_03: They just tell him they're like, Dalton, you have to leave, get out.
- 59:55SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 59:55SPEAKER_03: And that's that's also very that's also very western-y.
- 59:58SPEAKER_03: Like, this is when everything's kind of coming to a head, and they're like, Alright, Dalton, you gotta go.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_03: We're just gonna live in this community, we're gonna live in this weird purgatory, uh indefinitely, where Brad Wesley is our king and he has these yuppie pool parties with people who I guess are like not from here.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_01: Like Yeah.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_03: Brad Wesley's got all these like uh yuppie friends, uh like like extras, basically.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_03: Um, but they're not like characters in Roadhouse.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_03: They don't appear to be from this title.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_03: It's like they I think they might live in his home.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_03: I think he might just have like he just has like a couple dozen 20-something children who all have like topless pool parties in his in his uh his house.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it it is there is sort of an implied like anti-uppieism thing in the first half of the movie, which is so fascinating when it goes full corporate uh in the second half of the movie.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_00: And uh so it re it really does ramp up here, though, from like so immediately after that, Dalton is furious, everyone tells him to leave town, and Brad blows up the Emmett's house.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_00: And Emmett's the farmer.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_00: And so they have to go in, and so Dalton saves him and then runs and sees Jimmy on his motorbike.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_03: It's just open warfare against Does a giant leap and knocks him off.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_03: So funny.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_03: That's right, he uses his karate power.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_00: So not only is he not only is he didn't knock him off a motorbike, he chased down a motorbike.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_03: Um because he's so mad.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_03: And that's you know, that's also that's very that's very movie-ish, is that you gain more you gain more and especially with a character whose whole deal is Tai Chi, is that he is becoming more lethal by letting these emotions control him.
- 1:02:00unknown: Yeah.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_03: That's the that's the balance, that's the trade-off.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, cuz because then they get into a real fight and Jimmy says to him, I used to fuck guys like you in prison.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_03: Such a good line.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_03: Such a good line.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_03: Like, definitely, definitely insanely homophobic.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_03: But also fascinating.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_03: It's uh it came out of nowhere.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_03: I was like, what?
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_03: And like unclear whether he means it literally or if he just thinks it makes him sound incredibly powerful.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_03: Or whether the movie is telling you, like, whether the movie is doing that that, you know, uh gay people are are sinister, sort of uh homophobic shorthand.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_03: But it's it's so fascinating.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_03: It's an incredible thing to say out loud.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, something I've never heard before probably never heard.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_03: Never hear again.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_03: Just pure pure roadhouse dialogue.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_00: But Dalton Dalton does the thing where he which has been rumored before, and he rips Jimmy's neck out.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_00: And the prophecy is fulfilled, and he rips he rips his throat out with his hands.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_00: Rips his throat out with his hands, and he goes, he calls out to Wesley from across the river, and he goes, Wesley, fuck you! And chucks Jimmy's body into the river.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_03: Because he hates this man so much because he made him be a monster again.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_03: He made he made him uh loose lose control and you know turn back into the beast.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_03: And uh I forgot he just throws the body away.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_00: He just shucks it into so he just leaves it and he's This is yours! I don't like this anymore And he gets a call from Brad and he says he says Wade or Elizabeth, one of them is going to die.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_00: I'm going to flip a coin.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_00: And he flips the coin and you don't find out what it is.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_00: And uh Wade wanders in immediately to the bar and he's hurt, and Dalton's like, no, uh, uh Dalton's like, just lie down, have a beer, you'll be okay.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_03: And uh Yeah, and Sam Elliott was born to die in this movie.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_03: We all knew that Sam Elliott was going to die.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_00: Sam Elliott feels like born to die in every movie.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's too he's too beautiful for this world.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_03: He is a creature of grace that we that we will not tolerate.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_00: And Dalton uh rushes to save uh to save Doc, basically, because he's like, oh, if Sam Elliott's hurt, then Doc's the one that's gonna die.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_03: And Sam Elliott can handle himself.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Sam Sam's the safe one.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_03: And this is very this is uh this is exactly the scene from Dark Knight where he thinks he can save them both.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_00: This is exactly that scene.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_00: Wow, Dark Knight took inspiration from Roadhouse.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_03: I genuinely think it might have, because uh or at the very well at the very least, like we're talking about we're talking about a we're talking about like a bigger than life, like kind of operatic story that takes place sort of like in its own, you know, with within the parameters of its own rules, like its own like you know, story rules.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_03: Like these people are, you know, there's no cops, there's no you know, reporters, it's all just like these weird gods.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_00: And she refuses to go though.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_00: She's like, nope, because I've seen what you've done, I don't want to be with you now.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_00: And so he goes back to the bar and sees uh Sam Elliott passed out, or so he thinks he turns him over and he's been stabbed in the chest and he's dead.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_03: R IP Wade, Garrett, you were the best.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_00: And Dalton in his anger takes the knife out, removes it, and gets in his car and drives straight to Brad's house.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_00: Or so we think.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_00: Because because he drives, the car is going flying, and it's going straight towards all these all the like the cronies, and they're like shooting at him with the shotgun, they're shooting at the car.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're all racing down, and uh they're shooting at him, they're shooting at the car with the shotguns, and the car goes flying through the air and explodes and does a flip, and you're like, oh, surely he'd be dead at this point, and it lands, and they get they go running to the car and they open it up, and the knife has been stuck into the pedal.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_03: The weapon driving the car.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_03: The weapon used to kill his mentor was repurposed uh as a distraction.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_03: So Wade Garrett is still with him spiritually, like the ghost of Wade Garrett is driving that car.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_00: And he immediately immediately like um goes they they rush in, he knives they all these guys get killed, he knives two guys, so he knives one in the chest, and the other one, he like grabs the knife and throws it through the air and it lands and it hits him.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's he's just he's just like he's just a killing machine now.
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_03: Like he's you know, he's gone, he's gone feral.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_03: He's gone forward.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_03: It's it's beautiful.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_00: It's it's so over the top crazy.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_03: He uh sorry, I was just delivered a bagel.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_03: No, it's no worries.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_03: I had no idea this was happening.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_03: Thank you so much.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_03: Sorry.
- 1:07:58SPEAKER_03: My wife was trying to order soup and she accidentally ordered two bagels.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_03: Oh, nice.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_03: Which is not not easy, not easy to do, but I'm the benefit.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_03: I'm the beneficiary.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_03: I would not complain about that.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_03: Do you have anything to say about Roadhouse while we're doing a podcast?
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_04: Yes, of course I do.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_03: Um, come here, do a canoe.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_03: We'll see.
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_03: Alright.
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_03: Hi, hi.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_03: Hi.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_04: Um, Roadhouse is a perfect western.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_04: It is in a lawless town.
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_04: There are no policemen there.
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_04: Um, which is fascinating to me.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_04: But um, because normally if you drive like a monster truck over anybody, you would go to jail.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_04: But that is not the way the thing works in Roadhouse Town.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_03: Not if you're not if you're Brad Wesley.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm also just mad.
- 1:08:43SPEAKER_04: Sorry.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_04: You're just so good.
- 1:08:45SPEAKER_04: Alright, Jennifer is just I should have hit both of you on.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_03: Jennifer is just now fully on this podcast.
- 1:08:49SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 1:08:50SPEAKER_04: Um Is the villain's name is Brad Wesley?
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I didn't remember it at first, and then we looked it up, and then I marveled at how it's like the name of a child.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_04: I would love to see an entire prequel just about Brad Wesley.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:09:03SPEAKER_03: What what's the nice?
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_04: How did he conquer this tiny town?
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_00: How did he become the King Peter's incredible story?
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_00: This is what we were discussing pond, yeah.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_00: I think it's I think it's he started with his alcohol and then worked his way up.
- 1:09:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but that's the only way we can figure it out.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think that if you have a liquor business that's sort of like movie shorthand for being some kind of mobster.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_04: I guess so.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_03: And then he has the protection racket.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_04: Sure.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_03: But yeah, he yeah, he is just like I theorized that he wasn't even that rich.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_03: He's just like the biggest gangster in like a pretty small community.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_04: Do you think Donald Trump could drive a truck over people?
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_04: And it would be okay.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_03: I don't know, man.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_03: I'm like 50-50 on that.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_03: I mean, I genuinely don't know.
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_03: I mean, I guess we'll we'll as of this recording, we're gonna find out that he can get away with a lot of stuff, I think.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_04: That's a really good point.
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_00: Um god, well, if it happens in the in the time between releasing it, us releasing that, he drives a truck over some cars.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_03: Honestly, it would just make me like him more.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_03: Because at least that's objectively cool.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_00: That's how he goes out as a driving monster trucks.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_00: So long, suckers.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, he does love trucks.
- 1:10:13SPEAKER_00: We know big old trucks.
- 1:10:15SPEAKER_00: He loves trucks.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_04: It is the best part of the movie.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_04: That and oh, did did you tell him about I think it's Bill Murray?
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we talked about we talked about the Bill Murray.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that part's really great.
- 1:10:28SPEAKER_04: Okay, I'm gonna let you do this.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_04: Um I have soup coming as well as um multiple bagels.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_03: Well, thank you for the multiple accidentally ordered bagels.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we'll wrap up shortly.
- 1:10:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we're pretty much done.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_03: So feel free to keep as much of that as is is is helpful.
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_03: Oh, I'm keeping that.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_00: Wonderful.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_00: Uh the fun the funniest thing happens at this point, though, which is where a polar bear, he like pushes the polar bear down onto the guy, and it's the guy just goes, uh uh uh uh makes this weird noise.
- 1:11:01SPEAKER_03: That's right, yeah.
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_03: That's another one of those like loony tunes moments.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_03: It's so loony tunes.
- 1:11:05SPEAKER_03: I forgot about the stuffed polar bear.
- 1:11:07SPEAKER_03: Which ends up they fall in love with that.
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_03: Like the last five minutes are all just kind of like polar bear set piece.
- 1:11:13SPEAKER_00: They are very into that bear.
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_00: It's all around that.
- 1:11:16SPEAKER_00: Because he hides behind all of them, Delson hides from Brad around all of them, and jumps out on here, and they have this whole big fight at this point.
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_00: Um and Brad's holding his own.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Brad Brad, through through like sheer force of evil, is uh actually actually able to be like the big villain at the end of this.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_00: But um there's a point where he's going to um he's going to kill Brad, and he goes to like do the throat thing again, and he decides against it, and Brad's like Um Brad's like, I'm gonna oh, I'm just gonna do this myself, then uh I don't have time for this, and he goes to shoot Dalton, and the rest of the town show up and shoot him.
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_03: That's right, that's right.
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_03: They've had enough.
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_03: Dalton has so inspired the community that the entire town teams up, and I love that.
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_03: That's like a Spider-Man one.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_03: You mess with New York.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it is it is also very Western.
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_03: It's that like everybody thinks that they have to live a certain way until a hero inspires them.
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_00: And they'll and then the police show up and they're like, oh, what happened?
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_00: And they're like, oh, I don't know, I didn't see anything.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_00: Nobody saw anything here.
- 1:12:38SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_03: The police finally get involved for movie reasons, then becomes clear that like while we are while we are all good people, we are also not snitches.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_00: Snitches get snitches.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_00: And so nobody saw anything, and then that's pretty much the bigger.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_00: That's the end of the movie, is the yeah, the guy under the bear.
- 1:13:03SPEAKER_00: The guy under the bear.
- 1:13:04SPEAKER_00: And then it ends with the it ends with uh Dalton and Doc kissing in in the in the water.
- 1:13:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_03: And it's naked, both naked.
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_03: Strong strongly implied, uh strongly implied that he will he will stick around for a while.
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_03: It's the place he's gonna finally stick around.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_03: That he's he's gonna settle.
- 1:13:21SPEAKER_03: He found home.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_00: He found home.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_00: He found he found the girl, he found he found his calling.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_03: It's he can leave the life of violence behind.
- 1:13:33SPEAKER_00: And now he's a corporate man.
- 1:13:34SPEAKER_03: Right, right.
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_03: Now he's now he just runs like the hard rock cafe.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_00: He became Dave of Dave and Biden.
- 1:13:47SPEAKER_00: And so, yeah, that's the end of the movie.
- 1:13:49SPEAKER_00: And like, you've pretty much defended it the whole way through, but do you have any like final thoughts on like on the defense of this movie?
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_03: I just I think it falls into this uncanny valley sort of before before genre blending was a thing.
- 1:14:05SPEAKER_03: Cause as soon as I think in the 90s movies get really meta really fast, with uh things like um Kevin Smith and and Quentin Tarantino, but also like The Simpsons referencing other TV shows, like The Simpsons being kind of the first really successful TV family that watches TV.
- 1:14:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:14:23SPEAKER_03: And I think that um critics and audiences uh sort of leveled up in their sophistication.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_03: And this is a movie that happens right before people are used to things being kind of meta or kind of like bad on purpose, you know, or or you know, schlocky by design.
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_03: Like, I think that the movie's really, really sincere.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_03: I don't think that it's it's doing anything ironically, but I think it's it's challenging you to imagine a world where these are the rules and the priorities.
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_03: And because it's not our world, it's like this is very stupid.
- 1:14:57SPEAKER_03: Like, why would anyone why do they not merely call the police?
- 1:15:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_00: I do like your I have to say, I do like it more now that like thinking about when you when you put it in the context of it's like a modern to the to its time, it's a modern day Western.
- 1:15:14SPEAKER_00: I do like that.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think around that.
- 1:15:16SPEAKER_03: Those are I think those are the those are the best ways to make it f feel like a good movie is to compare it to thinking of it as a riff on Westerns, and or thinking of it as something like John Wick, where the fun is is is in how improbable but uh consistent the world is.
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:15:36SPEAKER_00: It's yeah, it's very interesting.
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_00: I I I did and I wasn't enjoying the beginning, but by the time we got to the end, I was fully envolved with it.
- 1:15:43SPEAKER_00: I was really into it.
- 1:15:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's it's great.
- 1:15:45SPEAKER_03: And the writing, the writing is untouchable.
- 1:15:48SPEAKER_03: Uh just the dialogue and the one-liners.
- 1:15:51SPEAKER_03: It's like people make fun of, you know, people make fun of like Arnold Schwarzenegger movies for like the catchphrases and stuff.
- 1:15:56SPEAKER_03: But this is Oh, I love them.
- 1:15:57SPEAKER_03: Me too.
- 1:15:58SPEAKER_03: But this is not that.
- 1:16:00SPEAKER_03: This is this other this is like a like a stranger version of that.
- 1:16:05SPEAKER_03: Like a very specific voice is in this movie.
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:16:12SPEAKER_00: Okay, so let's move on to the final segment then, because I don't want to keep you too much longer.
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_00: Um so do you have a reverse of this?
- 1:16:21SPEAKER_00: I think you mentioned you mentioned it in the email that you you you had one.
- 1:16:24SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you still want to stick with that.
- 1:16:29SPEAKER_00: Well reviewed that you think is a bad movie.
- 1:16:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm famously a Matrix 1 hater.
- 1:16:34SPEAKER_03: I was I was the I was so excited for The Matrix.
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_03: I think I was like 17.
- 1:16:39SPEAKER_03: I was the exact right age for The Matrix, and I was watching, you know, the the commercials were the marketing campaign was incredible.
- 1:16:47SPEAKER_03: It was like no one can tell you what The Matrix is.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_03: You have to see it for yourself.
- 1:16:50SPEAKER_03: It's like, oh, I can't wait.
- 1:16:51SPEAKER_03: This is gonna be the greatest movie I've ever seen.
- 1:16:53SPEAKER_03: Uh it's gonna be this, you know, weird uh Grant Morrison cyberpunk, you know, uh uh uh altered reality thing that's you know it's gonna blow my mind and change my life.
- 1:17:06SPEAKER_03: And they watched it, and like it's technically amazing, but you know, like Roadhouse, the tone is very consistent and the philosophy is very muddy.
- 1:17:16SPEAKER_03: And uh I was so disappointed with the Matrix because it's like they wake up out of their dream world and it's just like Terminator, basically.
- 1:17:24SPEAKER_03: It's actually this very it's this very straightforward post-apocalyptic future.
- 1:17:29SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 1:17:30SPEAKER_03: That I found to be so disappointing.
- 1:17:33SPEAKER_03: Uh and it, you know, Matrix is sort of one of the harbingers of of mystery box TV and movies and marketing and stuff.
- 1:17:41SPEAKER_03: Like Matrix comes a little before Lost, where people figure out that they can generate a huge amount of hype by asking questions.
- 1:17:48SPEAKER_03: And one thing that Matrix, to its credit, does is it like it reveals what's going on.
- 1:17:53SPEAKER_03: Like it says, like, yeah, so the cool ethereal stuff at the beginning of this movie is an illusion, and actually things are basically just kind of like a version of Terminator.
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_03: And uh so I'm sitting there like, oh, so this is just like a regular movie.
- 1:18:07SPEAKER_03: This isn't like you know, I I thought that this would be like uh comparable to something like Inception or something, where there was all like ambiguity and all these layers of reality, and like something really interesting and challenging.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_03: And it's actually incredibly straightforward.
- 1:18:23SPEAKER_03: Uh and the performances are, you know, by design, the performances are like very wooden and kind of boring, and I feel like the philosophy doesn't mean anything.
- 1:18:32SPEAKER_03: And I don't think they have anything to say about the violence in the movie.
- 1:18:35SPEAKER_03: I think that it's largely kind of cool for the sake of cool.
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_03: Like they break Keanu Reeves out of his little matrix hole, but then they when they're like when they need to mow down security guards for a set piece, they're like, It's too late to save those guys.
- 1:18:49SPEAKER_03: It's like, well then who are you?
- 1:18:51SPEAKER_03: Like, then you're not heroes, you don't want anything, there's no clear goal associated with this.
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_03: So I think I think that everything I think that the box that the Matrix is in is like really beautiful and it changed filmmaking.
- 1:19:05SPEAKER_03: But I c I don't think it's a good movie.
- 1:19:09SPEAKER_00: That's fascinating.
- 1:19:10SPEAKER_00: I've no yeah.
- 1:19:12SPEAKER_00: I've I don't I I don't know if I agree or not.
- 1:19:17SPEAKER_00: Oh, I'm probably wrong.
- 1:19:18SPEAKER_03: I mean that's why that's why it's an unpopular opinion.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_00: There are points to that I agree with.
- 1:19:24SPEAKER_00: I I agree with the violence stuff, definitely.
- 1:19:26SPEAKER_00: And and like when he pulls when they get when like the sec like you said, the security guards don't get pulled out, we don't have time to save them.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_00: That yeah, you're right.
- 1:19:33SPEAKER_00: It's that's awful.
- 1:19:34SPEAKER_03: I think Roadhouse has a cleaner relationship with violence and like the idea of violence as a problem-solving tool than the Matrix does.
- 1:19:45SPEAKER_00: And that will be your quote.
- 1:19:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:19:47SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna make that case.
- 1:19:48SPEAKER_00: Put that on the VHS box.
- 1:19:51SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:19:51SPEAKER_00: Do you have do you have any final thoughts on anything on either of those movies?
- 1:19:55SPEAKER_03: No, it makes me want to watch Roadhouse again, it makes me want to watch Matrix again.
- 1:19:58SPEAKER_03: Uh I th I think you know, I might be looking at one through gross-colored glasses and the other with the sort of like unfair first, you know, knee-jerk reaction of a teenager, but it's it's a reaction that I've had trouble shaking over the years.
- 1:20:12SPEAKER_00: Have you seen The Matrix again since you saw it?
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_03: I've seen most of it I've seen most of it a second time.
- 1:20:17SPEAKER_03: And I weirdly I find the sequels to be a lot more interesting because they make crazier decisions.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_00: Someone has defended uh Revolutions on this podcast.
- 1:20:26SPEAKER_00: So And that that was the one that I did not like.
- 1:20:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean it's not it's not good, but at least it's really weird.
- 1:20:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:20:36SPEAKER_00: It's weird, but I just find it a boring movie.
- 1:20:39SPEAKER_00: I think it's too long and like nothing happens really.
- 1:20:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they're all they're all very they're all very in love with themselves.
- 1:20:44SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, I think that I think that I think that my argument that the Matrix movies I think that because the second and third Matrix movies were so sort of bad on their face that the first one sort of gets a pass for being the good one, like the mind-blowing one.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_03: But my feeling with Matrix is like if they had been as successful as they sort of purport themselves to be, um, there'd be more Matrix stuff.
- 1:21:08SPEAKER_03: Like it didn't end up being a Star Wars, it didn't end up being a Lord of the World.
- 1:21:12SPEAKER_00: But they're trying they are trying again because there's another one coming out.
- 1:21:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but that's I think more of a product of the the larger generational reboot culture.
- 1:21:20SPEAKER_03: Um but I'm really I'm really excited about the new one because I think it'll be a good opportunity for me to revisit this stuff with sort of like fresh eyes and less of a chip on my shoulder.
- 1:21:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:21:29SPEAKER_00: I I haven't seen I'm trying to think, I haven't seen the first one in like a good decade.
- 1:21:35SPEAKER_00: So I wonder if it does hold up for me.
- 1:21:37SPEAKER_00: Like the last time I saw it, I enjoyed it, but I wasn't like blown away like I was the first time.
- 1:21:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it it's it was it a lot of it was a lot of it was like the conditions of the marketing being so aggressive and the reveal being so, in my mind, very mundane.
- 1:21:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:21:54SPEAKER_00: Alright, well, this has been great.
- 1:21:56SPEAKER_00: Um how can we find you online?
- 1:21:58SPEAKER_00: And do you have anything you want to plug at the moment?
- 1:22:00SPEAKER_03: Sure.

- 1:22:03SPEAKER_03: And I have a new children's book out.
- 1:22:05SPEAKER_03: Uh it's called Princess Dinosaur.
- 1:22:07SPEAKER_03: Uh, it's illustrated by Ashley Quatsch.
- 1:22:09SPEAKER_03: Uh it's about a princess who is also a dinosaur.
- 1:22:11SPEAKER_03: Uh so if you have a toddler in your life uh who uh has contains multitudes and oscillates wildly between personalities, uh, we wrote it for them.
- 1:22:22SPEAKER_03: Uh so you can get that at uh you know online or any bookstore near you.

- 1:22:28SPEAKER_03: Thank you for having me.
