- 0:42that sounds like something you'd like to do, they come hang out

- 0:53inspiration for today's topic from a social media post that I
- 0:57saw as I was scrolling through my feed, the poster was
- 1:01lamenting hustle culture, which she called bro hustle, hustle
- 1:07culture. It's this idea that we all should be hustling all the
- 1:12time, day and night to get rich, instead of being more balanced
- 1:16with lots of time for rest and relaxation. First, let me just
- 1:20say this, if you need a break from work, then take it, you do
- 1:24not need to work yourself into the ground, nor do you need to
- 1:27justify your need or desire for time off away from work social
- 1:33media, other people, whatever it is you need and want a break
- 1:36from. In fact, that's one of the distinct privileges of business
- 1:41owners. And it's one of the things that in the poll that
- 1:44I've done on my community, a lot of women law firm owners say the
- 1:49reason that they went into business for themselves because
- 1:52they wanted that flexibility, we do have the option to say no,
- 1:57and to create more flexibility in our lives. If that is what we
- 2:01choose. There's no boss telling us that we need to work.
- 2:06However, I suspect that this poster was feeling pressure from
- 2:11what she's seeing in her social media feed more than anything.
- 2:15And to that I say, if it's bugging you, then delete it,
- 2:20hide it, block it on your social media. That's what those buttons
- 2:23are for. If someone is stressing you out by what they post, we
- 2:28don't have to look at it. I use the block feature liberally
- 2:33because my social media team is for me, and it's for my
- 2:36pleasure. And if there's somebody getting on my nerves, I
- 2:40just unfollow I block them. I I don't look at that, what they're
- 2:45posting on their feed. I choose other things that I find more
- 2:49interesting or fulfilling. I'm better still. You can take a
- 2:53break from social media altogether. You know, that's
- 2:55allowed, right? We can do that. If if what we're seeing is
- 3:00stressing us out. All that said the title of this podcast
- 3:03episode is in defense of hustle culture, not how to reduce
- 3:07stress in your life by scrolling your social feed, not scrolling
- 3:10your social media feed all day, comparing yourself to others. So
- 3:14let's get to it. Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, Tony Robbins,
- 3:20Jeff Bezos, Beyonce, Jay Z. Rihanna, Mark Zuckerberg. Sara
- 3:26Blakely, Sara Blakely, Leslie stall, Barbara Walters, Gary
- 3:30Vaynerchuk Mark Lowe bonus. Most of the sharks on Shark Tank.
- 3:36Name any highly successful person you know, so just right
- 3:39now write down the names of some highly successful people that
- 3:42you admire. And name any of those people who were not born
- 3:48into the top 1%. And you better believe that they hustled to get
- 3:53where they are today. If you know Do you know any dedicated
- 3:58competitive athletes for example? If so, then you know
- 4:03they likely are are up way before anybody else is in the
- 4:07morning, hitting the pool, the rink, the court, the road or the
- 4:10field or wherever it is they practice their sport. And
- 4:16they'll be back later in the evening after everybody has gone
- 4:19to bed. And they're very careful about every scrap of food they
- 4:23put in their mouths because their goal is to be number one,
- 4:25a champion and achiever. So they hire coaches, they work extra
- 4:30hard, they hustle, they make sacrifices, they make choices,
- 4:36all because they want to achieve certain goals. It's the same
- 4:41with most any highly successful person you know, who did not
- 4:45start out that way. At some point, they made the decision
- 4:50that they wanted to achieve a high level goal and to do so
- 4:54they would need to bring in high level performance. In essence,
- 4:58they would need to hustle
- 5:01is the concept. If you want to live a life few others get to
- 5:05live, then you must make choices others are unwilling to make. Of
- 5:10course, most people I named now have the choice of living more
- 5:15balanced lives, because they have plenty of money to hire
- 5:18others to produce for them. And they've likely all got to a
- 5:22place where they put their money to work for them as well. But
- 5:26they did not start out that way. And I bet good money that many
- 5:32of them still rise early to get after their goals. Why? Because
- 5:36they built themselves that way, through their choice of habits.
- 5:39So they have created the person and created themselves to be the
- 5:43person who, who will go after their goals and do what is
- 5:50necessary to achieve their goals. Even if it means making
- 5:53sacrifices of sleep, or, or, you know, certain he habits or
- 6:00certain activities or making choices about how they spend
- 6:03their money or don't spend their money, invest their money, don't
- 6:06invest their money. They make those choices early on. There is
- 6:10nothing inherently wrong with hustling. All the great
- 6:14achievers hustle, when you get into trouble when we get into
- 6:17trouble is when we compare ourselves to others, when we
- 6:20feel resentment, because we don't want to hustle to achieve
- 6:25important goals. If that's not your choice, then don't do it.
- 6:30If you feel pressure by it, then make a choice to step away. But
- 6:36I promise you this, no one who has achieved the goals that you
- 6:41are aspiring and working hard to achieve is going to judge you
- 6:46for hustling to get out there and get after your goals and get
- 6:50after you want. It's only going to be those people who are
- 6:54comparing themselves to you and feeling like they're coming up
- 6:57short. And it makes them uncomfortable to watch you do
- 7:02those things. If you are driven to achieve whatever your goals
- 7:06are, don't let other people get in your head about personal
- 7:09culture, and make you feel wrong about your choices. I once had a
- 7:14conversation with a commercial artists friend who said his
- 7:18partner fusses at him because he wants to work all the time on
- 7:21his art, even while he's on vacation. And he said to me,
- 7:25when it's your passion, your calling, you do what you want to
- 7:30do all the time, it doesn't feel like work. So he really had a
- 7:35desire to go on vacations, because he was at that point in
- 7:40his business where he just wanted to spend all of his time
- 7:43focus on his passion, which was growing his commercial art
- 7:47business. But he you know, made it a point to take those time
- 7:50that time away, because it was important to somebody else in
- 7:54his life. And I agree, I know I make a point to schedule time
- 7:57away from my business because I recognize the need to allow my
- 8:00brain to shut off every now and then. And really, since I work
- 8:06in my home office. Work is always on my mind. And my
- 8:11business is always on my mind, because I'm excited about it.
- 8:13I'm excited about growing and serving people. And the only
- 8:16thing that really gets me out of that is to go away on a trip or
- 8:21a vacation. And I know that's important, not just for me, but
- 8:25also for my marriage, my husband for us to be able to do that.
- 8:30And I tend to function in a level of intensity. That, you
- 8:36know, most days when I'm thinking about my business that
- 8:38I do need a break every now and then from that. However, I love
- 8:42working with women, law firm owner coaching clients, the
- 8:45conversations I have with them about their businesses really
- 8:50energizes me. Some days after I've had a day full of calls, I
- 8:54will be absolutely exhausted. But I will just feel so high on
- 9:00life because I just had such a good time enjoying. They're
- 9:06seeing the world through their eyes and their business through
- 9:08their eyes and watching their accomplishments. I love creating
- 9:12growing my business, not only because of the wealth, and
- 9:15therefore the options that that will affords me, but for the
- 9:19sense of accomplishment I feel when a plan works. In fact, I
- 9:24love it so much the best way, I found the best way to expand my
- 9:27capacity because I couldn't keep starting new businesses and
- 9:30growing them was to help others create and grow businesses that
- 9:33they love. Now of course I've invested untold hours in a very
- 9:38my business and serving my clients. I've worked straight
- 9:40through several weekends in a row to create products that I
- 9:44could put out into the world to be able to serve more people.
- 9:48And it's not always fun. Sometimes it's tough to sit down
- 9:53in front of this computer again. Others would admonish me to
- 9:57breast they do monitor speed arrests and safety Like, all
- 10:01work and no play makes till the dough girl. That's my mother's
- 10:04favorite thing to say. And the people who say that, to me are
- 10:07people who love me and care about me. And they're also
- 10:09people who work for other people. And they don't
- 10:12understand the drive and passion of entrepreneurial life. I find
- 10:17it particularly interesting, my parents are always, you know,
- 10:19telling me, they're in their 80s. And they're always telling
- 10:21me I need to rouse. And I remind them that these are the same
- 10:25people that would work all day in their nine to five jobs, and
- 10:29then they would get off work, they would pack up, you know,
- 10:33sandwiches in a bag, and we would all go to the property
- 10:38that they bought, where they say the two of them, my parents
- 10:41would physically build the houses, they did this more than
- 10:45once that we lived in growing up. So to advance themselves in
- 10:50life. And in their wealth. They built their own houses my
- 10:54fortunately my dad had those skills, my mom was right there
- 10:57beside him on hammering in boards. And so I remind them
- 11:02that when they see me putting in extra time to create the life
- 11:06that I want, or to bring out a project or a passion of life,
- 11:10that they did the very same thing. And that's where I got it
- 11:13from, right. So I will apologize for my hustle, are there some
- 11:18days I'd rather be in Paris or on the beach, or in a mountain
- 11:20cabin somewhere, of course. But everyone everywhere has those
- 11:24days, no matter how rich or poor, they are. fantasizing is
- 11:30just a part of human nature. And we can make those things happen
- 11:34for ourselves. But it is also part of human nature to work
- 11:39hard for big, audacious goals. So here's the hustle culture,
- 11:45and also to taking rest when you need it. It all boils down to
- 11:50you making choices that serve you and what you want, and not
- 11:56worrying about what other people are doing. So that's a wrap for
- 12:01this episode of the wealthy woman lawyer podcast. I hope
