Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Katherine Firkin: US Correspondent on George Clooney's essay urging Joe Biden to drop from the race
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Right now, we're going to Catherine Ferkin, a US correspondent,
- 0:06Speaker 1: because the first Democratic senator has questioned President Joe Biden's
- 0:10Speaker 1: election chances. It comes as Nancy Pelosi has weighed into
- 0:13Speaker 1: this in an awkward way too for Joe Biden. Catherine,
- 0:17Speaker 1: Good morning. What's the latest?
- 0:19Speaker 2: Yeah, good morning, Ryan. Well, it just really keeps getting
- 0:22Speaker 2: worse for Joe Biden, doesn't it. I mean, now we're
- 0:25Speaker 2: basically a fortnight out from that disastrous debate between the
- 0:29Speaker 2: President and Donald Trump, and just nothing that he does
- 0:32Speaker 2: seems to be helping him in terms of improving his
- 0:35Speaker 2: standing amongst the American public. You know, since the debate,
- 0:39Speaker 2: we saw him, we've seen him out on the campaign trail,
- 0:41Speaker 2: We've seen him call up radio stations and TV stations,
- 0:45Speaker 2: We've seen him do a whole sit down TV interview
- 0:48Speaker 2: about what went wrong. And none of this is resonating
- 0:51Speaker 2: with voters. None of it is changing people's minds. Now,
- 0:55Speaker 2: as you mentioned today, we've heard from the first Democratic
- 0:58Speaker 2: senator who's spoken out with really the most damning comments yet.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Colorado's Michael Bennett says he fears his party could lose
- 1:06Speaker 2: in a landslide to Donald Trump. If Joe Biden stays
- 1:10Speaker 2: on the ticket. The language he used was really, really strong.
- 1:13Speaker 2: He says he believes Donald Trump is on track to
- 1:16Speaker 2: win November's election, and he's worried that he will take
- 1:19Speaker 2: both the Senate and the House if the Democrats don't
- 1:22Speaker 2: make a drastic change. Interestingly, he didn't actually call for
- 1:25Speaker 2: Biden to step down, but rather he said the party
- 1:29Speaker 2: itself now has a moral obligation to do everything it
- 1:33Speaker 2: can to stop Trump from returning to the White House.
- 1:36Speaker 2: You mentioned Nancy Pelosi there in the intro. She's also
- 1:39Speaker 2: given some really quite awkward comments about the fact that
- 1:43Speaker 2: time is running out for Biden to make a decision.
- 1:46Speaker 2: We have also heard from actor and Democratic donor George
- 1:49Speaker 2: Clooney today. He published a guest sam The New York
- 1:52Speaker 2: Times basically saying we need a new nominee. Now. This
- 1:56Speaker 2: is particularly strong because Clooney is a longtime friend of
- 2:00Speaker 2: and he's outwardly passionate about the Democrats. That he says
- 2:04Speaker 2: that Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at
- 2:06Speaker 2: the fundraiser was not the Joe big effing deal Biden
- 2:10Speaker 2: of twenty ten. So unfortunately for Biden, I mean all
- 2:14Speaker 2: the signs appointing to exit stage left.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Ryan, Catherine, thank you very much for that. Are US
- 2:20Speaker 1: correspondent Katherine Ferkin with US Live from the United States
