- 1:03Have you ever thought about how obedience shapes a life?
- 1:07Deuteronomy chapter 12 shows us that loving God isn't just about emotion. It's about action.
- 1:13It's about choosing God's way, even when everything around us pulls us in a different direction.
- 1:19As the Israelites stood on the edge of the promised land, God didn't just give them land.
- 1:24He gave them instructions. tear down the false gods, clear out the distractions.
- 1:32Worship only where God says to worship.
- 1:34Why? Because obedience leads to blessing, not just for them,
- 1:39but for their children and their children's children.
- 1:43This chapter reminds us that obedience isn't about rules. It's about relationship.
- 1:49It's about living in a way that shows we trust God, we honor God,
- 1:54and we love God enough to follow him fully.
- 1:57Join us for this episode of the Woman at the Well Ministries podcast as Erica
- 2:03Close teaches from Deuteronomy chapter 12, focusing on verse 28.
- 2:09Observe and hear all these words which I command thee, that it may go well with
- 2:15thee, and with thy children after thee forever,
- 2:19when thou doest that which is good and right in the sight of that Lord thy God.
- 2:25Let's explore what it looks like to build a culture of obedience where our lives,
- 2:31our homes, and our hearts are set apart for Him.
- 2:36Deuteronomy 12 is a powerful chapter about the importance of obedience and about
- 2:44how God himself is looking for our obedience.
- 2:48Let's start reading in Deuteronomy 12.
- 2:51These are the statutes and judgments which ye shall observe to do in the land
- 2:56which the Lord God of thy fathers giveth thee to possess it all the days that ye live upon the earth.
- 3:01Ye shall utterly destroy all the places wherein the nations which ye shall possess
- 3:06serve their gods, upon the high mountains and upon the hills and under every green tree.
- 3:12And ye shall overthrow their altars and break their pillars and burn their groves
- 3:16with fire, and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods and destroy
- 3:21the names of them out of that place.
- 3:23Ye shall not do so unto the Lord your God, but unto the place which the Lord
- 3:29your God shall choose, out of all of your tribes, to put his name there,
- 3:33even unto his habitation shall ye seek, and thither thou shalt come.
- 3:38And thither ye shall bring your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices,
- 3:42and your tithes, and heave offerings of your hand, and your vows,
- 3:46and your freewill offerings, and the first things of your herds and of your flocks.
- 3:50And there ye shall eat before the Lord your God, and ye shall rejoice in all
- 3:54that ye put your hand into, ye and your households, wherein the Lord thy God hath blessed thee.
- 4:00Ye shall not do after all the things that we do here this day,
- 4:04every man whatsoever is right in his own eyes.
- 4:07For ye are not as yet come to the rest and to the inheritance,
- 4:12which the Lord your God giveth you.
- 4:14But when ye go over Jordan, and dwell in the land which the Lord your God giveth
- 4:18you to inherit, and when he giveth you rest from all your enemies round about,
- 4:23so that ye dwell and safety.
- 4:25Then there shall be a place which the Lord your God shall choose to cause his name to dwell there.
- 4:31Thither shall ye bring all that I command you, your burnt offerings and your
- 4:36sacrifices, your tithes and the heave offering of your hand,
- 4:40and all your choice vows which ye vow unto the Lord.
- 4:44And ye shall rejoice before the Lord your God, ye and ye sons and your daughters
- 4:48and your menservants and your maidservants and the Levite that is within your
- 4:52gates, forasmuch as he hath no part nor inheritance with you.
- 4:56Take heed to thyself that thou offer not thy burnt offerings in every place
- 5:02that thou seest, but in the place which the Lord shall choose in one of thy tribes.
- 5:08There thou shalt offer thy burnt offerings, and there thou shalt do all that I command thee.
- 5:14Notwithstanding thou mayest kill and eat flesh in all thy gates,
- 5:17whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, according to the blessing of the Lord thy
- 5:22God, which he hath given thee.
- 5:24The unclean and the clean may eat thereof as of the roebuck and as of the heart.
- 5:30Only ye shall not eat the blood, ye shall pour it upon the earth as water.
- 5:34Thou mayest not eat within thy gates the tithe of thy corn, or of thy wine, or of thy oil,
- 5:41or the firstlings of thy herds, or of thy flock, nor of any of thy vows which
- 5:47thou vowest, nor thy freewill offerings, or heave offerings of thine hand.
- 5:52But thou must eat them before the Lord thy God in the place which the Lord thy
- 5:56God shall choose, thou and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy manservant,
- 6:01and thy maidservant, and the Levite that is within thy gates.
- 6:04And thou shalt rejoice before the Lord thy God in all that thou puttest thine hands unto.
- 6:10Take heed to thyself, that thou forsake not the Levite, as long as thou livest upon the earth.
- 6:16When the Lord thy God shall enlarge thy border, as he hath promised thee,
- 6:19and thou shalt say, I will eat flesh, because my soul longeth to eat flesh,
- 6:23thou mayest eat flesh, whatsoever thy soul lusteth after.
- 6:27If the place which the Lord thy God hath chosen to put his name there be too
- 6:32far from thee, then thou shalt kill of thy herd and of thy flock which the Lord
- 6:36hath given thee, as I have commanded
- 6:38thee, and thou shalt eat in thy gates whatsoever thy soul lusteth after.
- 6:43Even as the roebuck and the heart is eaten, so thou shalt eat them.
- 6:47The unclean and the clean shall eat of them alike.
- 6:51Only be sure that thou eat not the blood, for the blood is the life,
- 6:54and thou mayest not eat the life without the flesh.
- 6:57Thou shalt not eat it, thou shalt pour it upon the earth as water.
- 7:02Thou shalt not eat it, that it may go well with thee and with thy He when thou
- 7:06shalt do that which is right in the sight of the Lord.
- 7:10Only thy holy things which thou hast and thy vows thou shalt take and go unto
- 7:15the place which the Lord shall choose.
- 7:17And thou shalt offer thy burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood,
- 7:21upon the altar of the Lord thy God, and the blood of thy sacrifices shall be
- 7:25poured out upon the altar of the Lord thy God, and thou shalt eat the flesh.
- 7:30Observe and hear all these words which I command thee, that it may go well with
- 7:34thee and with thy children after thee forever, when thou doest that which is.
- 7:38Good and right in the sight of the Lord thy God.
- 7:42When the Lord thy God shall cut off the nations from before thee,
- 7:45whither thou goest to possess them, and thou succeedest them,
- 7:49and dwellest in their land.
- 7:51Take heed to thyself, that thou be not snared by following after them,
- 7:57after that they be destroyed from before thee,
- 8:00that thou inquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve
- 8:04their gods? Even so will I do likewise.
- 8:07Thou shalt not do so unto the Lord thy God.
- 8:10For every abomination to the Lord, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods.
- 8:15For even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.
- 8:20What things soever I command you, observe to do it. Thou shalt not add thereunto, nor diminish from it.
- 8:28Loving God is obeying God. Chapter 12 lays out a series of statutes and judgments for the Israelites.
- 8:37Statutes and judgments designed to teach them about proper worship,
- 8:41sacrifice, and tithing.
- 8:44While the chapter focuses on obedience, the chapter closes with a promise,
- 8:48the results of obedience.
- 8:51As the chapter opens, the Lord gives instructions to the Israelites for what
- 8:55they are to do as they enter the promised land.
- 8:57The first instruction is a big one. The Lord is very clear that as the Israelites
- 9:02enter the promised land, they are to utterly destroy all the places where the
- 9:07nations that previously inhabited the promised land worshiped and serve their gods.
- 9:12The Lord calls for complete destruction of all the places of worship,
- 9:16those on the high mountains, those in the hills, and those under the shade of a tree.
- 9:21The Lord is clear as to how these altars are to be destroyed.
- 9:25They are to be overthrown, broken, and burned.
- 9:28The graven images of their gods are to be hewn down so that nothing is left,
- 9:34not even the name of the God.
- 9:37In place of these altars, the Israelites were to listen to the instructions
- 9:42of the Lord, as the Lord identified places for the Lord to put his name.
- 9:48This place will be where the Israelites would seek the Lord and offer their
- 9:52burnt offerings, sacrifices, and tithes.
- 9:56These places are to be places of celebration of the blessings of God.
- 10:01The Israelites were cautioned not to live after the people that they come into contact with.
- 10:06Every man whatsoever is right in his own eyes, but after God himself,
- 10:11who is leading them into the promised land.
- 10:14As the Lord leads them into and through the promised land, when the Lord identifies
- 10:19a place of worship, the people are to worship and offer their sacrifices.
- 10:23They aren't to worship at every place, for not every place is theirs.
- 10:28But the Lord has a specific place of worship for each of his people.
- 10:33The Israelites are reminded and instructed, again, regarding their sacrificial
- 10:38offerings and the prohibition of the blood.
- 10:41They're told where to eat and where to sacrifice, and that they are to remember
- 10:46the Levites God's chosen priests.
- 10:49The Lord commands the Israelites that when they increase their land holding
- 10:53and they are further from the place of sacrifice the Lord has chosen,
- 10:57they're still to follow his commands.
- 11:00And those sacrifices are only to be made at his chosen location.
- 11:05The end of this chapter is the promise for obedience. When the Israelites obeyed,
- 11:11the promise was that it would go well for their children and their children and their children.
- 11:18Obedience can be generational, just as sin can be generational.
- 11:23As the chapter closes, the Lord reminds the Israelites that as they move into
- 11:28new territory, they are to continue to live a life of obedience,
- 11:32and not a life that picks up the culture of those that live in the new territories.
- 11:39God is trying to build up in the Israelites a culture of obedience through an
- 11:44understanding of the sovereignty of God and his preeminence over all other gods
- 11:49the Israelites may have encountered in Egypt along their journey in the wilderness
- 11:53and in the crossing into the promised land.
- 11:56Do you have a culture of obedience in your life?
- 11:59Do you have a concept of God where you see him as sovereign in all things?
- 12:04We are often quick to judge the Israelites, but the truth is that we have many
- 12:08lessons to learn from them.
- 12:10Just like God was working on changing the hearts of the Israelites,
- 12:14he is working on changing our hearts.
- 12:16We aren't going to live obedient lives until we firmly believe and understand
- 12:20in our hearts that God is sovereign and that he deserves all our obedience.
- 12:27It's hard to say that God may or may not deserve something because he deserves all things.
- 12:32But until you believe in who God is, you aren't going to honor him with your obedience.
- 12:38Until you truly understand the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross,
- 12:43you aren't going to sacrifice your own wants and desires to be in alignment with His.
- 12:49When we think of having a culture of obedience in our lives and in the lives
- 12:53of our families, it reminds us that it should pervade all things.
- 12:57God calls us to obedience in all areas of our lives.
- 13:01When we're at work, we're called to the same level of obedience as when we are sitting in church.
- 13:07Obedience isn't circumstantial. Obedience is a state of the heart and is a core
- 13:13value that we carry with us.
- 13:15Just like the Israelites, when we go into new situations, it shouldn't change our core values.
- 13:23New situations bring new people, new influences, new ways of thinking,
- 13:28but the call in our lives is to stick closely to the obedient lifestyle to which we are called.
- 13:34Life takes us in many directions and along many paths.
- 13:38There are so many opportunities to wander, but our goal is to maintain our course
- 13:44and our direction, following after Jesus the whole way.
- 13:50Just like cultural changes in our world don't happen overnight,
- 13:54changes in our internal culture sometimes takes time, but they don't have to.
- 14:00Obedience in the Christian life isn't about our strength or our own ability
- 14:05to conform to a set of rules.
- 14:07It's a response to our understanding of who God is.
- 14:10As you evaluate your own life, look at God and not yourself.
- 14:15Do you love Him enough to change your life to be in alignment with what He is asking?
- 14:23Remember, you are loved. Jesus loves you.
