[SPEAKER_03]: And we talked with Haley Lou Richardson about good luck.
1:51
[SPEAKER_03]: Have fun.
1:51
[SPEAKER_03]: Don't die.
1:52
[SPEAKER_03]: The movie that is Gore Verbinski's first movie in a decade, co-stars Sam Rockwell.
1:59
[SPEAKER_03]: And today, we're talking about that movie once again with Juno Temple, of course Juno known to many as Keely from Ted Lasso, she's going to talk about how this script landed in her inbox while she was shooting Venom the last dance and immediately pulled her into its bonkers, dark comedy take on AI, social media addiction and even social tragedy.
2:23
[SPEAKER_03]: In fact, we'll hit the actual synopsis here.
2:26
[SPEAKER_03]: A dark night, a crowded diner, a man with a detonator, burst in, proclaiming to be from the future.
2:32
[SPEAKER_03]: This is the 117th time he's returned with the same imperative.
2:37
[SPEAKER_03]: Before time runs out, he must recruit a group of distinctly unqualified diner patrons, played by Hayley Lie Richardson, Michael Payneas, as he beats,
2:45
[SPEAKER_03]: as I'm shandry and Juno Temple to stop the impending AI apocalypse in save humanity from the perils of social media.
2:53
[SPEAKER_03]: The problem, everything is stacked against them from skeptical strangers and brain-rotted teenagers to algorithmic monstrosities beyond their control.
3:02
[SPEAKER_03]: But if this unlikely group can pull it off, the world might just turn out okay.
3:08
[SPEAKER_03]: Or not, I don't know.
3:10
[SPEAKER_03]: So, Juneau and I are going to talk about filming in Cape Town, balancing Viking helmets with grounded emotion, exploring motherhood in the middle of an apocalypse, and why Sam Rockwell is exactly the guy you'd follow to save the future, all that and more in one of my favorite films of the year.
3:32
[SPEAKER_03]: Let's talk about good luck.
3:33
[SPEAKER_03]: Have fun.
3:33
[SPEAKER_03]: Don't die.
3:34
[SPEAKER_03]: It's Kyle Meredith with Juno Temple.
3:37
[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, look at your wall, that's fantastic.
3:40
[SPEAKER_03]: I try to give you something to look at over here.
3:43
[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, that's great.
3:44
[SPEAKER_00]: I love that.
3:45
[SPEAKER_00]: Cool.
3:47
[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, it's so nice to meet you.
3:49
[SPEAKER_03]: And congratulate you on being what I think is my favorite movie that I've seen this year so far.
3:56
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, bring it on.
3:59
[SPEAKER_00]: Love that.
4:00
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, it's an insane movie, it's an insane movie, and it's so good, and I'd love to hear about it because what you all go down to what Cape Town writes, and to them for me, I live in Los Angeles, and we're going to Cape Town to them be at home, and you get the shoot, like this, this script, how did this arrive to you, because I would love to know your first reactions, like when you, when you either get a pitch or read it.
4:29
[SPEAKER_00]: So my first kind of, yeah, the way it arrived into my universe was in my inbox and my agent sent it to me and I was shooting actually venom three in Spain at the time we were doing epic night shoots like complete night shoots and it came into my inbox and I did a I did have to do a double take moment of like wait a minute what if I just been sent a movie that Galbenck is directing with Sam Rockwell story what oh my god, sorry, I don't remember my last swear, but I really want the initial kind of like
4:58
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, wow, this is, this is cool.
5:00
[SPEAKER_00]: And then I remember I saw it on my phone, I think at a lunch break when I was shooting venom and got back to the hotel.
5:08
[SPEAKER_00]: And
5:10
[SPEAKER_00]: opened up my laptop immediately to read it and the sun was up fully by the time I finished it, I couldn't stop it.
5:16
[SPEAKER_00]: It was such a rollercoaster of a script in the sense of like, you just have no idea what I was going to go next.
5:22
[SPEAKER_00]: You had no idea what was going to happen.
5:23
[SPEAKER_00]: The unpredictability of it, I'm very kind of a parallel to the world, because you know, and you know, I was pretty overwhelmed by how sort of emotion, it affected me throughout the reading of it, of the kind of feeling really
5:40
[SPEAKER_00]: laughing a lot, then feeling the immense tragedy of it and feeling very emotional at moments and sad about the world, but then also frightened at moments and then also weirdly hopeful, which is a combination of things you don't necessarily expect from from
5:58
[SPEAKER_00]: a script, a while in one go or even sometimes all on one page.
6:03
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I think and then I actually had a really lovely I had a zoom with go where we talked about it and and honestly I just couldn't really believe it for a minute because it was definitely a subject that felt like it was had a lot of gravitas and it really mattered to me that we
6:23
[SPEAKER_00]: didn't shy away from the tragedy of the school shooting and at the same time explored it in this kind of world of this bonkers dot comedy, which was so interesting about our past, our present and our future and how it kind of never really gave you an answer, but it kept asking questions and also felt like in that.
6:47
[SPEAKER_00]: give you hope about our future.
6:49
[SPEAKER_00]: Because what can we do if we don't keep asking questions?
6:51
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, conversations about complicated subjects are so key in this day and age.
6:57
[SPEAKER_00]: I think they always have been and I think they always will be.
6:59
[SPEAKER_00]: But it feels like right now is so important to keep asking questions to all the people everywhere.
7:06
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we need to keep asking questions learning from each other.
7:09
[SPEAKER_00]: And this film felt like it really wanted to explore that as well.
7:15
[SPEAKER_00]: And also do it in a smart way, I thought of this kind of nostalgic 1980s version of our future.
7:22
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we have those movies that we, I definitely grew up watching that feel like this kind of
7:29
[SPEAKER_00]: They take you to another place because they're not all CGI, they're not all, there is a lot of parts of them that are practical.
7:36
[SPEAKER_00]: And so you kind of, yeah, you feel like, whoa, that's a reality that we could get to in 2019.
7:41
[SPEAKER_00]: And now we're in 2020, six and you're like, oh, wow, wow.
7:45
[SPEAKER_00]: So I think the nostalgia of bringing that back was then exploring what is going to happen in our future and how we want to take control of it and make sure that we are involved in it together and not depending on
7:59
[SPEAKER_00]: on things like AI and things that don't necessarily have the human emotions that we I think really need to keep existing if human or hates and we'll be right back right after this.
8:10
[SPEAKER_03]: Welcome back.
8:10
[SPEAKER_03]: It's Kyle Meredith with Juno Temple.
8:13
[SPEAKER_03]: What I love to about that character and some of the stuff that you're talking your character I mean is that, you know, we're seeing her
8:27
[SPEAKER_03]: But she's like, I guess I'm going along with this.
8:32
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I'm going, I'm, you know, I'm in this as well.
8:35
[SPEAKER_03]: And that's why I love seeing her because you could overplay this.
8:38
[SPEAKER_03]: This could be a cartoonish thing.
8:40
[SPEAKER_03]: And your character was so grounded the whole time, as much as you can, be wearing a Viking helmet, you know, for.
8:46
[SPEAKER_00]: Totally.
8:47
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm also with, you know, my, in the airpiece, where I'm talking to my, what I'm hoping is my son.
8:53
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think that was, that was a really fun thing to also play with
8:57
[SPEAKER_00]: the real time that we're in that Susan actually does have some more information than she's letting on the entire times of these little moments where
9:07
[SPEAKER_00]: Everyone around her in those moments is like, what is going on?
9:10
[SPEAKER_00]: What the questioning things, you know, and I loved that that was coming from the love of her child, really.
9:17
[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, I thought that was a nice kind of side note for me to have too, because I think the film also really does explore these relationships from her mother and a son specifically.
9:27
[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought that was really interesting too, that she's connected the entire time
9:32
[SPEAKER_00]: what she hopes is her son and they're actually Sam and Haley are figuring out, oh, Haley's learning about the fact that she has a son.
9:39
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, so you've got these kind of two dualities of motherhood too, which I think was really, yeah, the whole thing was so intricate and honestly exciting to keep up with between really honest and it felt like as an actor you were on your toes the whole time as well.
9:53
[SPEAKER_00]: So there was a real kind of,
9:55
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and then you've got the actors that you're playing Sam Rockwell and everything.
9:59
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean the entire cast just talk about being on your toes because the scripts and the cast
10:04
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, their cost was just, they were unbelievable.
10:07
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think also what was unbelievable as well about them all and about us as a group is that we all really actually wanted to help each other with moments.
10:15
[SPEAKER_00]: And there was a real kind of a unit of collaborating together and feeling really interested in people's ideas for your character and vice versa, which I really, that was something I found really precious, because I think,
10:27
[SPEAKER_00]: People have such amazing ideas that when you ask, if they're willing to share, you're like, wow, that just made everything even more exciting.
10:34
[SPEAKER_00]: And I was really grateful that the cast were really up for that.
10:37
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think some Rockwell is a hero.
10:40
[SPEAKER_00]: I would definitely follow him to go and say, well, future again and again.
10:46
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and that's the question.
10:47
[SPEAKER_03]: What would it take for you to follow this in real life and that's that must be the answer right there It's as long as it's the same rock.
10:53
[SPEAKER_00]: Well How could you not you know, how could you not do that?
10:58
[SPEAKER_03]: It's such a great film seriously It's such a great film congrats on this and you know, it was so good talking to you about it Thanks for taking the time today.
11:05
[SPEAKER_00]: I really appreciate it.
11:06
[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you so much and yeah I'm really proud for your part of it.
11:09
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm glad you loved it
11:11
[SPEAKER_03]: And we'll be right back right after this.
11:14
[SPEAKER_03]: Now, it was just a couple of weeks ago that I have my conversation with Hayley, Lou Richardson.
11:18
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to include that one here again.
11:20
[SPEAKER_03]: If you miss it the first time, here's another fantastic take on this movie.
11:24
[SPEAKER_03]: Part two of Good Luck Have Fun.
11:26
[SPEAKER_03]: Don't die.
11:27
[SPEAKER_03]: It's Kyle Manned with Hayley, Lou Richardson.
11:29
[SPEAKER_03]: Hi, Kha.
11:29
[SPEAKER_01]: Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha
11:34
[SPEAKER_04]: Thank you, I was really excited to do that.
11:38
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm pretty, you know, I'm KMS saying and I've had a cold or flu or something for two and a half week.
11:44
[SPEAKER_04]: So I've seen better days, but I've also seen worst days.
11:48
[SPEAKER_03]: It's really great to have you here then now.
11:49
[SPEAKER_03]: This is everything I've been expected.
11:52
[SPEAKER_04]: You're seeing me at my best.
11:54
[SPEAKER_04]: How are you today?
11:55
[SPEAKER_03]: I just held my pee for a really long time and then ran to the bathroom hoping that you all didn't jump on and I got back like 10 seconds before you did.
12:02
[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, but you got your pee out.
12:04
[SPEAKER_03]: Got my pee out.
12:05
[SPEAKER_04]: So happy for you.
12:07
[SPEAKER_03]: So, you know, it's the same thing, right?
12:09
[SPEAKER_03]: We're on the same thing.
12:11
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, right.
12:11
[SPEAKER_03]: Sure.
12:11
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
12:12
[SPEAKER_04]: Same thing.
12:13
[SPEAKER_04]: I do have an overactive bladder.
12:15
[SPEAKER_04]: I pee like every hour on the dot.
12:17
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, right.
12:17
[SPEAKER_03]: So we'll see if it happens somewhere.
12:20
[SPEAKER_03]: If the dot happens in here.
12:21
[SPEAKER_03]: But hopefully not.
12:21
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm really sure to lot about myself within the first 15 seconds here.
12:27
[SPEAKER_03]: It's how I start most friendships.
12:28
[SPEAKER_03]: Talking about my bones.
12:31
[SPEAKER_03]: All right, really, good luck, have fun, don't die.
12:35
[SPEAKER_03]: What a brilliantly bonkers movie that you got to be a part of.
12:38
[SPEAKER_03]: Wow, BB.
12:40
[SPEAKER_03]: BB, iteration, right?
12:42
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
12:42
[SPEAKER_04]: Love iteration.
12:43
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
12:44
[SPEAKER_04]: It is definitely brilliantly bonkers.
12:46
[SPEAKER_04]: I would concur.
12:47
[SPEAKER_03]: It's also Gore for Benzki's first film in a decade, like that puts something on it right there.
12:53
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
12:53
[SPEAKER_03]: With this, did you get the pitch first or did you get the script first?
12:57
[SPEAKER_03]: Because I'm wondering how this story arrives to you and how you accept it.
13:00
[SPEAKER_04]: trying to think, well, one of my agents was kind of a role in getting the film made, and so she told me, she didn't really pitch the movie to me, but she said, haily, there's a good script.
13:16
[SPEAKER_04]: We want you to do it, which is rare, because oftentimes they send me scripts, and they're like,
13:21
[SPEAKER_04]: You can pass on this one but like so I get really excited when I hear one of them say we're sending you something that we actually want for you like we're excited about and she said gore and then I got the script and like I actually read it all in one sitting like which is also rare.
13:39
[SPEAKER_03]: Especially if you have to pee every hour that's right.
13:42
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah I read it I held my pee the whole time.
13:44
[SPEAKER_04]: That's how much I loved it.
13:47
[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm a slow reader and fast peer that's a I have no more jokes for that part All the piss jokes Did you know did you know the character that you were that you were reading for?
14:00
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, well the ensemble, right?
14:02
[SPEAKER_04]: I think Ingrid is kind of the only one I really could have played But you know what I kind of like or the best
14:09
[SPEAKER_04]: I don't tell everyone else, but I got angry to me.
14:12
[SPEAKER_04]: No, I really like, ingrid, I immediately like, not necessarily like saw myself in her, but I could see and feel myself playing her, which is cool, like when a character, like, when you're reading them on the page and they like spark something in you that's like, oh yeah, I can like feel myself doing this and not being, and being inspired and having fun and not being bored.
14:39
[SPEAKER_03]: I think the player like there's a little bit of a creepy vibe that we see.
14:43
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, she's like mysterious.
14:44
[SPEAKER_04]: I haven't gone to play a lot of mysterious characters because I'm not very mysterious.
14:50
[SPEAKER_03]: I can tell by the opening of our conversation.
14:53
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, really, I'm not, yeah, I definitely don't give mysterious vibes.
14:56
[SPEAKER_04]: I've tried, I've tried to be a mysterious gal, but it's just not in my blood, but it's an Ingrid's blood.
15:03
[SPEAKER_04]: So I like being able to whip that deep down part of myself out for her because I really like her.
15:09
[SPEAKER_04]: I like her.
15:10
[SPEAKER_03]: Did you, because it seems like you would have done most of this shoot in the same dress that you were in?
15:17
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, they had, it was, first of all, I was amazed at this costume department.
15:22
[SPEAKER_04]: They made, by hand, all of these princess dresses, and they're like perfect.
15:29
[SPEAKER_04]: It's exactly what I envisioned, and I know exactly what Corps envisioned, because he really loves England too.
15:35
[SPEAKER_04]: He like, I think he felt like very like paternally protective and cared for angered and like felt like her deep kind of emotional like anchor of the movie too.
15:49
[SPEAKER_04]: So he like really was protective of her and
15:51
[SPEAKER_04]: And naturally, so was I as the actor playing her.
15:55
[SPEAKER_04]: But I think the way that she kind of like visually came together with the hair, the dress, everything.
16:02
[SPEAKER_04]: It's like it really felt so right for both of us.
16:06
[SPEAKER_03]: It's like, you know, in most things, I guess you would wear the same costume most of the time, but I guess there's something about a princess dress of like, like, you did the whole shoot.
16:17
[SPEAKER_04]: And they had, they made, because they handmade them, that hero, blue dress, they made, I don't know, probably 10 to 20 different versions, and they were like different amounts dirty, or burned, or bloody, but yeah, it was sometimes the course
16:36
[SPEAKER_04]: because I eat a lot on set that's like how I stay awake and like stay energetic and stuff.
16:41
[SPEAKER_04]: Some people like don't like eating at work.
16:43
[SPEAKER_04]: This makes them tired.
16:44
[SPEAKER_04]: It's the opposite for me.
16:46
[SPEAKER_04]: And like always, I'm like always snacking.
16:49
[SPEAKER_04]: So the course it like, I would just pick you listening a little bit, give us a little bit.
16:54
[SPEAKER_04]: And by the end, there's like no more ribbon left to loosen.
16:59
[SPEAKER_03]: You can find you the crafty the entire time.
17:01
[SPEAKER_03]: That's it.
17:02
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh yeah.
17:03
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that's my favorite spot.
17:05
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
17:06
[SPEAKER_03]: What's the great thing about, and maybe even the tough thing about the movie is I want to tell everybody about the movie, but I don't want to tell them anything about the movie.
17:17
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I completely understand that because it's like, I'll show you, it's kind of a hard movie.
17:23
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, I guess you can like sum it up in like a little blurb, two sentence thing, but like it's so much more than that.
17:30
[SPEAKER_04]: And like the tone is someone asked me like, well, all my family would like asked me while I was filming like, what genre is it?
17:38
[SPEAKER_04]: And I'm like, well, it's pretty much everything except romance.
17:42
[SPEAKER_04]: That there's maybe a little bit of that in there actually like it kind of touches on all the genres like in the most batshit ways.
17:50
[SPEAKER_03]: Um, batshit's a good word.
17:52
[SPEAKER_03]: Like what's what kind of what genre is it?
17:53
[SPEAKER_03]: It's batshit.
17:54
[SPEAKER_04]: You know how Gore's been describing it since day one.
17:57
[SPEAKER_04]: He's been calling it his psychotic opera.
18:01
[SPEAKER_03]: that's great.
18:02
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and I'm like accurate.
18:04
[SPEAKER_04]: Very musical.
18:05
[SPEAKER_04]: Like the way when I first met him, he was like really obsessive about kind of the rhythm of the movie that he was envisioning and feeling and like in a very musical way.
18:16
[SPEAKER_04]: And then also he described it like,
18:19
[SPEAKER_04]: a soup.
18:21
[SPEAKER_04]: And he urged chili.
18:22
[SPEAKER_04]: Sorry, a chili.
18:23
[SPEAKER_03]: And he, who is a chili or soup?
18:27
[SPEAKER_04]: Is a chili a soup?
18:28
[SPEAKER_04]: Who comment below?
18:29
[SPEAKER_04]: He said that Ingrid was the special ingredient.
18:34
[SPEAKER_04]: And I was like, do you say that to all the cast?
18:40
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, his secret ingredient.
18:42
[SPEAKER_04]: But yeah.
18:43
[SPEAKER_03]: You put that on the business
18:46
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, my special skills that then my resume, good at being a secret and good.
18:50
[SPEAKER_03]: We can agree with you.
18:52
[SPEAKER_03]: Did you all think about like, like the more, because I've watched it two and a half times now.
18:58
[SPEAKER_04]: Wow.
18:59
[SPEAKER_04]: Like a half.
19:00
[SPEAKER_03]: I didn't want to meet weird about it.
19:03
[SPEAKER_03]: I want to make it weird.
19:04
[SPEAKER_04]: So a half is way less weird.
19:06
[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, I get it.
19:08
[SPEAKER_03]: But I've noticed like the more time I've spent a way from it, the more I start thinking about like, oh, like, do you all win your, when you're working on it?
19:15
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know that's a different experience and everything.
19:17
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, do you talk about the what-ifs and the theories that can kind of come out of a story like this?
19:22
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I think we definitely like the cast we were all like goofy and having like dumb conversation, but we're also all like really um I wouldn't say cerebral, but what I say like like having kind of deep comfort thoughtful conversations about things.
19:44
[SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, we had a lot of kind of aha moments of figuring out
19:48
[SPEAKER_04]: like wait if this is this what is this like twist or this discovery really mean and yeah we had a lot of moments like that really thoughtful cast I really like all those guys we had a fun time what looks like and you get to play up I mean a lot of people but of course Sam Rockwell and and just hearing about that you're white lotus alumni both of you that's fun I guess yeah he was offered that
20:14
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, we were in South Africa filming this and he was he asked me to like kind of read through that scene with him.
20:22
[SPEAKER_03]: That's like an iconic scene now.
20:24
[SPEAKER_04]: I know, and I was just like in his trailer and he was like, I don't know.
20:28
[SPEAKER_04]: Is this guy too creepy or people are gonna think I'm a creep if I do this?
20:32
[SPEAKER_04]: And I'm like, I think people will understand you're playing a character and I think you have to do this, Sam.
20:40
[SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, that was a, that was pretty great.
20:44
[SPEAKER_04]: It's hearing that scene.
20:45
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, like, I know, well, I guess we all know Mike's writing from watching the first two seasons,
20:53
[SPEAKER_04]: like out of context with not knowing what was going on in the third season.
20:57
[SPEAKER_04]: I was like, what is Mike on?
21:00
[SPEAKER_04]: What is happening?
21:02
[SPEAKER_03]: It feels like it would go right in with everything that you were doing on this movie and it just and ponies, by the way, and everything, because I know we got a wrap up and just seeing that everything that you're doing and the book, I'm sad and horny, we'll plug that really quick because it's fun to say.
21:16
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
21:17
[SPEAKER_04]: It's just like,
21:20
[SPEAKER_03]: Sure, yes.
21:21
[SPEAKER_03]: By the way, I have read some of the stuff you put in there, and it's your fantastic in it.
21:25
[SPEAKER_04]: So, oh, wow, thank you.
21:27
[SPEAKER_04]: That's a lot.
21:28
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I'm not, I'm not on my period or anything like that, but yeah, I can still.
21:32
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm not good at everything.
21:33
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm bad at tennis.
21:36
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, that's something.
21:38
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
21:38
[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, like seriously, congrats on this.
