- 0:00So, now that we're talking about comics,
- 0:02we we've kind of jumped over to that
- 0:04space that we're both in. I know how you
- 0:06got back into comics. I think you've
- 0:08covered it on your channel a bunch, but
- 0:10I want to talk about like through the
- 0:13whole thing with, you know, cracking out
- 0:14your slabs, making everything raw, which
- 0:17is cool because I got to be honest with
- 0:19you, I did that years ago. Like, and I
- 0:22obviously I still have slabs, but like
- 0:24every time I would buy a book that was a
- 0:26slab, I would croc it out and keep it
- 0:28raw. have just become that type of
- 0:29collector. But what kind of went through
- 0:32your mind when you were when you're
- 0:35doing that? Did you worry about like
- 0:36price at all about you know what I don't
- 0:38think it would be harder to sell knowing
- 0:39what I know and being a comic collector
- 0:41because I think a lot of people want raw
- 0:42books but do you ever think to yourself
- 0:44you know what is this the greatest idea
- 0:46knowing if I ever want to sell this
- 0:47stuff it may be you know a little bit
- 0:50harder on myself to sell or no?
- 0:52>> Yeah there was there was a lot that was
- 0:53going through my head. Um, I uh
- 0:58I I wanted to just purge um
- 1:02I I wanted to restart I wanted to
- 1:04restart myself in this whole collecting
- 1:08thing. And CGC
- 1:10was there from the very [ __ ] start
- 1:13with me. And my whole collecting journey
- 1:17started with that [ __ ] [ __ ] And um I
- 1:20I get mad about it because I feel I feel
- 1:24influenced. I feel hoodwinkedked. I feel
- 1:27something like I felt like
- 1:30it should have given me more than it
- 1:33did. And then and then when I tried to
- 1:35sell that some of that [ __ ]
- 1:37>> and I put those slabs up for sale and
- 1:40nobody cared, it was like it dawned on
- 1:43me I was I was tricked. And um you know
- 1:48obviously the stuff I was selling I mean
- 1:49it's not like golden age stuff everybody
- 1:53would want. It was it was just the 9.6s
- 1:56the 9.4s
- 1:58and it's like nobody wants it. Nobody
- 2:02cares. The slab people came and the slab
- 2:05people went. They're gone. The slab
- 2:08people are gone. They're Pokemon.
- 2:09They're Pokemon now.
- 2:10>> You're right. You're right. And the the
- 2:13slabs
- 2:15the slabs chased away so many potential
- 2:20true new true like people that could be
- 2:23fans of comics and it pissed me off and
- 2:27I wanted to be done. I didn't care about
- 2:29the money. I I I like I mean I'm
- 2:31cracking out my ASM14 first Green
- 2:35Goblin. I'm cracking out uh ASM300 9.6.
- 2:40I'm throwing $10,000
- 2:44out the [ __ ] door in submission fees.
- 2:47Like, I I don't I want I This is the
- 2:49first time I'm ever looking at these
- 2:51books. I'm smelling them. I'm holding
- 2:52them. You know, I'm paging through them.
- 2:54I do. I actually have what I actually
- 2:57have. Did I get, you know,
- 2:58hoodwinkedked? Dude, who are these
- 3:00people that are freaking doing this
- 3:03scam? It was just like, what what the
- 3:06are my are my comics actually my comics?
- 3:10And you know, it was very nice to go
- 3:12through that. Um, but yeah, it no, I the
- 3:15money,
- 3:17yeah, I was throwing a lot of [ __ ]
- 3:19money out out the door. And um, I'm in a
- 3:22totally different
- 3:25financial headspace now than I was four
- 3:29years ago. I mean, I had a really,
- 3:31really good job four years ago. I was
- 3:34working my ass off. And I mean, the
- 3:36money that I was putting into this [ __ ]
- 3:39it was I deserve to have lost what I did
- 3:45because it was it was irresponsible what
- 3:48I was doing because I was just sending
- 3:50books down there, buying [ __ ] But, you
- 3:53know, I I was the prey. I I was the
- 3:56prey. I was the easy money. I was the
- 3:59the millennial uh professional that they
- 4:03were praying on that these dealers that
- 4:06these these [ __ ] main aisle people at
- 4:09these ComicCons that was who they were
- 4:11waiting on for me to roll through there
- 4:14and man I I see them and they're still
- 4:16getting [ __ ] people. I hear them. I
- 4:18hear it when I'm going to these cons. It
- 4:20just I All of that is with CGC. It's all
- 4:23the slabs. I go I I I see these dealers
- 4:26at Heroes Con. It's just a wall of
- 4:28slabs. And I was just like, "Bro,
- 4:31what the [ __ ] are you? You you are you
- 4:34are a trading card flipper. You that's
- 4:36that's what you are." And I I'm trying
- 4:39I'm I obviously you could tell I'm salty
- 4:42because I just lost I lost so much. But
- 4:45I still love comics. I love to read.
- 4:48I've been I was reading today like um um
- 4:52and I and I tied it all in together. I I
- 4:55made it,
- 4:56>> you know, the the YouTube hate,
- 4:59>> the CGC losing the money,
- 5:02>> it made me feel like I wanted to hate
- 5:04everything I had, but I
- 5:07>> I I realized that I actually do like
- 5:10this stuff. And um cracking those slabs
- 5:13out was one of the best things I ever
- 5:15did.
- 5:16>> You speak a lot of truths here. And like
- 5:18a lot of people who normally would admit
- 5:21to something like that, I think they've
- 5:23been through kind of the same thing that
- 5:24you've gone through. And I myself have
- 5:26done the same thing. And that's why I
- 5:27kind of stopped slabbing books a while
- 5:29ago is because when when it when you
- 5:32used to be able to send in your book for
- 5:34like $50 and it was a high value book, I
- 5:36thought it was okay. You know what? That
- 5:37to me makes it worth it. Like the cost
- 5:39to grade a book wasn't that bad for what
- 5:41the book was depending on the book you
- 5:42were sending in. But when it got to a
- 5:45point where I noticed that when people
- 5:49would go to a show or even at my LCS
- 5:51that the slabs were not selling and they
- 5:53were sitting on the wall and everybody
- 5:55was only asking for RAWs.
- 5:57>> Even now, you know, Instagram live
- 5:58sales, people, you know, they'll show
- 6:00the this the slabs for a bit and they
- 6:02say, "Let's focus on the RAWs because
- 6:03that's where people are actually
- 6:04spending the money." And it's just like,
- 6:06you know what, something's going on.
- 6:09like and I think a lot of people like
- 6:10you one they got fed up with the whole
- 6:149.6 9.4 because at the end of the day
- 6:17when whether anybody wants to admit this
- 6:19or not if you're sending a copper age
- 6:21book or a a modern book everybody's
- 6:23looking for a 9.8 for the most part
- 6:25that's what they want to buy because
- 6:26they're still relatively affordable and
- 6:29you get those 9.4s and the 9.6s and they
- 6:31almost become I don't want they're not
- 6:33worthless don't get me wrong but they're
- 6:34like to certain collectors they're
- 6:36basically worthless right?
- 6:37>> Yeah. So, I think that's how how CGC and
- 6:41some of these, you know, grading
- 6:42companies, that's how they got people to
- 6:43say, "All right, let's submit this book.
- 6:44Let's see if we can get that grade." But
- 6:46if it's not that great, you spend all
- 6:47the money grading the book, and now all
- 6:49of a sudden you spent all the money on
- 6:50this book that's not really worth as
- 6:52much as you thought because nobody
- 6:53really wants it, right?
- 6:54>> Yes. Yeah. And and you you don't
- 6:57appreciate what you have anymore. Like
- 6:59you look at that 9.6 and there's that.
- 7:02And I don't care who you are. If you
- 7:03have something and you you know that
- 7:06it's not that other people tell you it's
- 7:08not important or it's not valuable or
- 7:10it's not a thing, dude, you have a near
- 7:13mint copy of a book. Some idiot in
- 7:18Sarasota, Florida that said that your
- 7:19book's not worthy of a 9.8 is going to
- 7:22cheapen your experience with that. I
- 7:24said, "Fuck this. I'm not letting this
- 7:28dude. I I sold so many 9.6s. I wish I
- 7:33had those back because then I could have
- 7:35had near mint copies in my collection. P
- 7:38I've got to piece that back together.
- 7:39It's one of the biggest lies. And but
- 7:42the thing is with the RAWs, dude, and
- 7:44why they sell is because they're hitting
- 7:46two different groups. They're hitting
- 7:48the real collectors that really want the
- 7:50RAWs, and they're hitting the flippers
- 7:52who are wanting to get those slabbed.
- 7:54And and it's it it that's both of them
- 7:57because they're trying to get a raw to
- 7:58get a deal because it's it's this
- 8:00vicious cycle
- 8:02>> because once it's slabbed,
- 8:04>> it's peak it's peak money. There's no
- 8:07more money
- 8:08>> and and um I don't I don't I can't I
- 8:12don't know why it took me so [ __ ]
- 8:13long to realize that. Um it once
- 8:17>> it happens, man. And it's just like
- 8:19everybody's going to go through the
- 8:20experience. Like every every collector
- 8:22who's been in it for for long enough,
- 8:23they're going to they're going to
- 8:24realize something's up or they're going
- 8:26to make a mistake or they're going to
- 8:27lose money. I lost money on a golden age
- 8:29book. It's just I hate to say it, but
- 8:31it's part of the collecting world where
- 8:32you do have people who are going to take
- 8:34advantage of you whether it even be the
- 8:36people who are, you know, the companies
- 8:38out there are supposed to be helping us
- 8:39or, you know, just a dealer or another
- 8:42collector. It's just
- 8:43>> the collecting space. You heard about
- 8:44all the stuff with the the card grading
- 8:46stuff now, how all the signatures are
- 8:48fake. I don't know if you heard about
- 8:48that.
- 8:49>> No.
- 8:50>> Oh my god. There's there's a big scandal
- 8:51going out in the card space. How like a
- 8:54lot of like over $300 million worth of
- 8:56cards that were signed were were fake
- 8:59signatures. Just crazy to hear.
- 9:01>> That's my one of my biggest gripes with
- 9:03this hobby is is just how predatory
- 9:07there's there's prey and there's
- 9:08predators and it's hot potato. Who who's
- 9:11left with the [ __ ] at the end? And you
- 9:15know, it's not that this hobby is
- 9:18there's other hobbies that do that, but
- 9:21I don't I never felt that way collecting
- 9:24like retro games because like I bought
- 9:27the game, I played the game, I put the
- 9:30game on the shelf, like that was the
- 9:31thing. But but the this comics game,
- 9:35this is something else. and uh
- 9:38specifically like the actual collecting
- 9:40like with vintage comics and stuff like
- 9:44this is a whole another game and I don't
- 9:48love it to be honest. I don't I I really
- 9:52like if I could turn back time I would
- 9:55never have done this [ __ ] ever.
- 9:57>> Um I would I I would have bought
- 10:00Omnibus. I would have bought the trade
- 10:02paperbacks. I would have read the
- 10:03stories. I would have bought more manga
- 10:05stories like and enjoyed myself and
- 10:08spent thousands on that and had a blast.
- 10:12[music]
- 10:18Do you think now I I know obviously you
- 10:20sold some stuff off. If you just
- 10:21downsize to the only the things that you
- 10:24thought was sentimental to you and let
- 10:26everything else go, would you be a
- 10:28little bit better now? If I could sell
- 10:32everything, if I could sell everything
- 10:34tonight, I would if I could get my money
- 10:37back.
- 10:37>> I was going to say for me, like I
- 10:39downsized a lot. I I probably sold off
- 10:41twothirds of my collection. Only kept
- 10:42the books that I think were sentimental
- 10:44to me growing up as a kid and now the
- 10:46books that I want to own. But um and I
- 10:49took losses. I'm not going to lie to
- 10:50you. Like I got in I got in like at a
- 10:52certain point where I made money on
- 10:53certain books and then I got out in some
- 10:55where I lost some money on some books.
- 10:57So overall I'm probably about even. But
- 10:59at the same time like it depends on the
- 11:01loss but sometimes taking a loss is the
- 11:03best thing you could do especially for
- 11:05your mind.
- 11:06>> Yeah it it definitely you learn a lot
- 11:10but uh with this YouTube game this has
- 11:14been my diary. I have explained my
- 11:18this is my content. This is like who I
- 11:20am like explaining my bumps and my
- 11:22lumps. And then what it's become is
- 11:26everybody points their fingers. You
- 11:27[ __ ] idiot. you loser. Everybody
- 11:30could have told you that. It's it's it's
- 11:32that blame. But see, all of it's
- 11:34associated.
- 11:36See, that's the problem, Lawrence. Like,
- 11:38this whole game is it's different for me
- 11:42because you your collecting journey
- 11:45hasn't started and stopped with your
- 11:47YouTube career. Like, it has developed
- 11:50independently. Like, this has all been
- 11:52tied together for me. So, you know, I
- 11:56feel more pain than just the financial
- 12:00because I I mean, I don't want to feel
- 12:01like an idiot. I don't want to feel like
- 12:03I've made poor financial decisions when
- 12:05I know I obviously have. Um I if I could
- 12:09if I if I could take a reasonable loss,
- 12:12sell everything, try to reinvest that
- 12:15money in something that, you know, is a
- 12:175% 6% just a a modest type of gain and
- 12:22then buy back the things that I want
- 12:26that I would do that in a heartbeat. Um
- 12:28but I'm too I'm too far in. I'm too deep
- 12:31in and the longer I keep the [ __ ] the
- 12:34more I grow attached to it. I got you.
- 12:37Listen, my dad says something to me when
- 12:39I was, you know, a probably a young
- 12:42adult and he said, "Everybody's going to
- 12:44make mistakes. It's how you recover from
- 12:45those mistakes." And I think for me
- 12:47personally, I've lost money, not just in
- 12:48comics, but in other aspects of my life.
- 12:50And I think just doing what you said and
- 12:53just cutting my losses, taking that
- 12:55money and putting it something that I
- 12:56know is going to grow me. Even if you
- 12:57said that 5%, 10% a year, whatever it
- 13:00is, you will feel better about the whole
- 13:02situation. And then maybe like you said,
- 13:03you go back and buy things that you
- 13:04remember as a kid that you want. But
- 13:06that's for a whole another story. But it
- 13:08still could happen, dude. I'm telling
- 13:09you.
- 13:11>> Yeah. I uh it it I have a weird
- 13:14relationship with money. Probably not
- 13:16necessarily. Uh I
- 13:20I feel like I go through a lot to make
- 13:23the money that I do. And it hurts um to
- 13:29really lose. And um the the older I get,
- 13:33see, man, just even five years ago, just
- 13:35the way I was spinning, bro. I mean, I
- 13:37was spinning it. And it's just the older
- 13:41I get, I just realize everything could
- 13:45go. Like, you know, with me being a
- 13:47dentist, like I lose I lose the ability
- 13:49to use my hands. It's over.
- 13:51>> Yeah.
- 13:51>> You know, I lose the ability to uh use
- 13:54my legs because I can't operate the foot
- 13:56pedal. Like, it's over. like I'm so
- 13:59fragile and my earning potential
- 14:02is so scary and it it frustrates me
- 14:06because
- 14:08you know I look back and I'm like I mean
- 14:10how much wealthier could I have been if
- 14:13I hadn't have done this stuff now
- 14:14obviously the YouTube thing wouldn't
- 14:16have happened um but this is
- 14:19insignificant money and um you know the
- 14:23nerd stuff the h the hobby stuff you
- 14:26know that was that was for me. Like it
- 14:29was it it was special for me and it was
- 14:33it was it was modest and it was
- 14:35controllable. But then you start making
- 14:37$4,000 purchases, $10,000 in CGC
- 14:40submissions,
- 14:42thousands and thousands of dollars going
- 14:44out. I'm like, this is a problem. This
- 14:47is not good.
- 14:50So, there's two things that you said
- 14:51there I want to touch on because I know
- 14:53one we talked about a little bit about
- 14:54beforehand about our our professions
- 14:56because you obviously people know you're
- 14:58a dentist and you're in healthcare and
- 15:00I'm in healthcare which maybe not a lot
- 15:01of people know that but I'll reveal it
- 15:03right now. I am a pharmacist even though
- 15:06I don't I work in a retail setting my
- 15:08whole life. I worked in a hospital a
- 15:10little bit and I wanted to ask you being
- 15:13on that healthcare side and you can you
- 15:15know if you want to answer something if
- 15:16you don't want to answer something I
- 15:17totally get it because it's our personal
- 15:18lives but how tough is it dealing with
- 15:23people in the healthcare sector and I'm
- 15:24not talking about the people you work
- 15:25with but like patients stuff like that.
- 15:27>> Yeah. I mean it's we you and I are in a
- 15:30customer service industry but we're
- 15:33dealing with people's lives. We're
- 15:36dealing with people's health. We're
- 15:37dealing with people's smile. We're
- 15:39dealing with the the medicines they're
- 15:41ingesting into their body. And the toll
- 15:44that it takes on health care providers
- 15:48is is it's it's a hidden thing. People
- 15:51associate pharmacists, they associate
- 15:53dentist, eh rich [ __ ] you know, they're
- 15:56taking they're taking the money and
- 15:58they're running. But the sacrifices that
- 16:01we have made, the the sacrifices that we
- 16:04make daily putting to do this, it it
- 16:09it's hard. The money we make, we [ __ ]
- 16:12deserve it. And um it hurts when it
- 16:17hurts more because that's the thing like
- 16:20people think that it's easy money like
- 16:22or the money comes in fast and it's just
- 16:25it's not like that, dude. Dude, the
- 16:27health the anything healthcare right now
- 16:29is just [ __ ] awful. I mean, I I would
- 16:31come out and say it because I don't care
- 16:32anymore because I I've been doing this
- 16:33what I do for 25 years. And I have just
- 16:37I'm at my wits end. Um people have
- 16:40gotten worse. Um the health care system
- 16:42has gotten worse. Reimbursements for
- 16:44your services have gotten worse. Uh
- 16:47being on the pharmacy aspect of it, like
- 16:49people getting medications, you know,
- 16:50it's hard to get them because the costs
- 16:52are through the roof. Um, you know, I
- 16:54myself being, you know, working for
- 16:57where I work now, like it's very hard to
- 16:59even keep the doors open because, you
- 17:00know, we're losing money. But it's just
- 17:04what I've had to deal with over 25
- 17:05years, which I'm sure you've had to deal
- 17:06with over your career, is just insanity.
- 17:09Like, I've had people take shits on the
- 17:11floor at the store, people just walking
- 17:12around, taking a [ __ ] and just [ __ ]
- 17:14leaving. I'm talking about right on the
- 17:15floor like in the middle of a like a CVS
- 17:17if you work for CVS like and just
- 17:19walking out the door and not saying a
- 17:20word like just in in insane stuff like
- 17:23that that that doesn't even affect my my
- 17:25day but it's just like it's just gotten
- 17:27so bad I don't even know uh it's just me
- 17:29venting a little bit but I'm sure it's
- 17:31maybe not as bad like that but just as
- 17:33bad for you.
- 17:35>> Yeah, it's just uh people don't
- 17:37prioritize their health. They they spend
- 17:41money. See, and that's that's the thing.
- 17:43It's just I see how foolishly people
- 17:46spend their money as opposed to taking
- 17:48care of themselves and it just makes me
- 17:51sad. Um, and you know, the hobby thing,
- 17:55it it's supposed to take me away from
- 17:57all of this. And you know, it does. Um,
- 18:01but when we got this kind of money
- 18:03wrapped up in [ __ ] it's kind of hard
- 18:05not to
- 18:07kind of feel a little bit more than just
- 18:09a hobby. It's, you know, it's an
- 18:11investment. I mean, it's a that's a
- 18:14dirty word. That's a no no word, but it
- 18:16it it is. I mean, when you're spending a
- 18:18thousand bucks on something,
- 18:20I mean, that's not I mean, thousand
- 18:22bucks is Dude, $100 is still a lot to
- 18:24me.
- 18:27>> What made you want to start a channel?
- 18:28We'll start from the beginning.
- 18:30>> Okay. Yeah. So, there was a channel in
- 18:33when I was in dental school. Uh this was
- 18:362012. There was a channel called Kind of
- 18:38Funny. It was run by two guys, uh, Greg
- 18:42Miller, Colin Morardi. They're video
- 18:44games journalists that work for IGN.
- 18:47They left that website and they branched
- 18:50off. They made their own YouTube. I
- 18:52started watching them. See, I wasn't
- 18:54like a YouTube people like person. Like
- 18:57some of these people have lived on
- 18:59YouTube for their whole existence.
- 19:02>> Like I wasn't that cuz I didn't have
- 19:04time for this [ __ ] when when I was in
- 19:06dental school, I watched that stuff and
- 19:10I developed like a connection with them.
- 19:12Like I felt like they were my friends
- 19:15and um I mean I was watching their
- 19:17content religiously, but then I just
- 19:19realized they're just shooting the [ __ ]
- 19:20like you and I are now. like we made it.
- 19:23Like you and I are make are having a
- 19:26conversation
- 19:28for fun and we're putting it on the
- 19:30internet and we're monetizing it and
- 19:32people want to watch it and we're
- 19:34getting paid to do this. We we made it.
- 19:37I wanted to do that and I glamorized it
- 19:41because, you know, I'm suffering
- 19:44studying. I'm like, you know, cutting
- 19:46open dead bodies. Like I I'm smelling
- 19:49from alahhide. I'm like, this [ __ ]
- 19:50[ __ ] sucks. these idiots are waking
- 19:53up at noon playing video games. And I
- 19:56was like, "Bro, I want to I want to do
- 19:59that." And you know, I when I first
- 20:01started YouTube, I was trying to find a
- 20:04lane. Uh my first video was my Batman uh
- 20:08Dark Knight, the Master Race uh statue,
- 20:12the Frank Miller inspired statue. And I
- 20:14I wanted to come out like I want if I
- 20:16wanted to do this, I wanted to have
- 20:18something impressive because I thought
- 20:19that YouTube was about what you had.
- 20:23Like it was about um you know the stuff
- 20:26the stuff got the people
- 20:28>> because I I I mean I knew I had a good
- 20:31personality. Like not a good
- 20:32personality. I knew I had enough
- 20:33personality to do something.
- 20:38>> I wasn't a
- 20:38>> Huh?
- 20:39>> Charisma.
- 20:40>> Yes. Charisma. Like I wasn't afraid to
- 20:42do this. like I mean I can talk to this
- 20:44camera. I feel I I don't feel scared
- 20:47right now. So, you know, it was like I
- 20:50watched those guys and I was like I
- 20:52could do that. And when I found my dad's
- 20:56when when me and my dad found the comic
- 20:58book collection and I was like, "Holy
- 21:01[ __ ] let me share this." It was like
- 21:04this this comic book YouTube community.
- 21:07It was like they embraced me with open
- 21:10arms. I was like, "Holy [ __ ] this is my
- 21:12community." like this is a community
- 21:14that that I could build build on. Like
- 21:18these are people that are passionate.
- 21:20They're wanting to watch. They they
- 21:22anytime I post comic book stuff, they
- 21:24watch. You know, it was like that was I
- 21:28was like there here's my lane. And um I
- 21:33we talked about this off air, but it you
- 21:36know I want my goal with this is to be
- 21:40somebody that I can sit on this mic and
- 21:43I think it is for you too where it's
- 21:45like I I want to be able to talk about
- 21:47whatever and people will be with me.
- 21:51They'll they'll they'll stay with me. It
- 21:53doesn't have to be a lane. And because
- 21:56you know you and I have very very
- 21:58similar passions and that's why I'd like
- 22:00your channel because you talk about the
- 22:02stuff I like but it you know it's I
- 22:05wanted to be like a personality if that
- 22:07makes sense.
- 22:08>> Absolutely. I think you know similar to
- 22:12me like when I first started doing this
- 22:14it was like more about all right I was
- 22:15just kind of chronologic what's the word
- 22:19chronicling my journey in you know
- 22:21getting back into collecting and all of
- 22:22a sudden like I wanted to do better I
- 22:24wanted to do more. I'm like, you know, I
- 22:25could be better than what I'm doing now.
- 22:27And then I started putting more work
- 22:28into it, trying to be more entertaining,
- 22:29blah blah blah. And I've always been a
- 22:31very artistic person, so I always
- 22:33thought I could come across and have a
- 22:34conversation and do whatever. But, you
- 22:36know, your channel evolves in a certain
- 22:38way. And then you kind of say, you know
- 22:39what, this is kind of what I want to do.
- 22:40And like you said, I love just sitting
- 22:43on here and just having a conversation.
- 22:44So that's what made me want to start the
- 22:46podcast. So, I totally understand what
- 22:47you're saying because I feel like this
- 22:49is the most entertainment that people
- 22:51like us are going to get. Just kind of
- 22:53hearing our stories, thinking what's
- 22:55going through our mind and not just
- 22:56showing books and talking about books or
- 22:59we're talking about certain things, but
- 23:00bringing them, you know, our passions in
- 23:02life.
- 23:03>> Yeah. And I I I wish it was that way,
- 23:05but I think what people want a lot of
- 23:08time is something that benefits them.
- 23:11like how can I how can they make money
- 23:14or what should I not do or where should
- 23:18I go to get this should I get this like
- 23:23um I think that that can't be
- 23:25underestimated because I look back and
- 23:27I'm like okay what did I want from kind
- 23:29of funny well I wanted friendship in a
- 23:32sense of companionship of like feeling
- 23:34like I'm part of their community but I
- 23:37also wanted them to tell me what video
- 23:40games to buy. Like, is this worth my
- 23:43time? That's where the influencer thing
- 23:45comes in. And um I I mean, I never
- 23:49wanted to be an influencer. That wasn't
- 23:52it wasn't my goal. Like, I didn't want
- 23:54to be the person that like, okay, this
- 23:58is this is what you should buy. But I
- 24:01say that, but then I look back at my
- 24:03videos and I'm like, okay, well, I'm
- 24:04showing the secret lab chair. I'm
- 24:06showing this. And I'm I'm pro it's like
- 24:09products but I don't I didn't want to be
- 24:12an influencer in that regard. I wanted
- 24:14to be um
- 24:18I say famous but it it you know I wanted
- 24:20to have reputation of like people
- 24:24clicking my video because they wanted to
- 24:25hear from me regardless of what I had to
- 24:27say.
- 24:33>> [music]
- 24:34>> I think the greatest entertainers, no
- 24:36matter what you put out there, if you
- 24:38have a following and and I'm not going
- 24:40to I'm not going to lie, for a while
- 24:42there, no matter what you put out,
- 24:44people had to click on that video
- 24:45because they didn't know what you were
- 24:46going to say. And that I think that was
- 24:47part of it because that's what I don't
- 24:50want to say that's what kind of put you
- 24:51on the map for me because before you
- 24:54started kind of doing that stuff, I
- 24:55didn't YouTube didn't re recommend a lot
- 24:57of your channels or a lot of your stuff.
- 24:59I didn't really know who you were. You
- 25:00know what? Regardless of what people
- 25:02think, if you're willing to put yourself
- 25:04out there
- 25:05>> and your video becomes mustwatch, that's
- 25:09kind of what we're looking for. Take
- 25:10take a point like back in the day, I
- 25:12don't know if you're going to remember
- 25:12this, like Howard Stern back in the day
- 25:14on his mediocre rise, all the outlandish
- 25:16[ __ ] he was saying that got him to where
- 25:18he was. So like,
- 25:19>> yeah,
- 25:20>> it's just if you become mustwatch, I
- 25:22don't care what you're putting out
- 25:22there. That's every I think
- 25:24entertainer's goal.
- 25:25>> Yeah. Vulnerability. And if you look at
- 25:28big YouTubers and you look at people
- 25:30that have developed in this space, they
- 25:33had that one video or they had something
- 25:36like where it it it stuck and it gain
- 25:39got that traction and and it is luck but
- 25:43you can make your own luck. I mean I if
- 25:46you are willing to do something crazy or
- 25:49be very vulnerable because you you'll
- 25:52see a video come across like um like I I
- 25:56get like recommended like people being
- 25:59very very open about like their medical
- 26:02issue or you like a video like I'm dying
- 26:06and and and it it or something like that
- 26:08and it's like 8 million views or some
- 26:12somebody that's like um
- 26:14>> you had some sort of catastrophic thing
- 26:16happen or something. It's,
- 26:20you know, that's what happened with me
- 26:21when I got kicked out of those comic
- 26:23book shops. I didn't go in to that that
- 26:27day. I was not looking for that. But
- 26:31instead of having the shame, I realized
- 26:36that
- 26:37this is it. Th this this is this is my
- 26:42foot and it that's what I became. It
- 26:46it's just it sucks that it had to happen
- 26:50like that cuz I mean you know ideally
- 26:52you know the the video that blows up is
- 26:54I found my dad's comic book collection.
- 26:56Look at these insane grails. That should
- 26:59be a million views but it doesn't.
- 27:03That's not
- 27:04>> No.
- 27:07You you never know, man. All it takes is
- 27:09a personality and an idea. That's what
- 27:11keeps me going. Like, if you if if I
- 27:14don't know how long you've watched my
- 27:15content, but if anybody out there, like,
- 27:17you've seen me evolve to do one thing,
- 27:18to do another thing, to another thing.
- 27:20It's cuz I'm trying to think of a new
- 27:21idea that can kind of get me over that
- 27:23hump. You know what I'm saying? Like,
- 27:25>> and all it takes is that one idea, and
- 27:27that's what's keeping me going in this
- 27:28thing. So, I'm hoping that that this
- 27:30kind of thing eventually takes off. I
- 27:31have no idea if it's going to, but I
- 27:33think maybe at some point if I can get a
- 27:35partner on here to talk about anything
- 27:38because I think just listening and and
- 27:40talking to people is could be great,
- 27:43could be funny. There's a lot of
- 27:44podcasts out there that I think are
- 27:46hysterical. That's what I've been
- 27:47listening to a lot lately that that
- 27:49don't just cover collectibles, but they
- 27:51cover kind of everything. So, that's
- 27:52that's what I'm hoping at least.
- 27:54>> Yeah, I think you're on to something
- 27:56because there really is not there's
- 27:58nothing like that in this space. like
- 28:00we're all on this island seemingly like,
- 28:03you know, Tom has the golden age guru
- 28:07guy, he had that other comic shop owner
- 28:10and they had chemistry, but there's um
- 28:13there's nobody that has that. And I
- 28:18think I think you're on to something. Um
- 28:22the problem is is that
- 28:26it's an individualistic
- 28:28kind of endeavor in a lot of ways
- 28:30because it's like you know me coming on
- 28:32your channel I'm not getting paid for
- 28:34this. I'm doing this because I like you
- 28:35and it's fun. It's good to talk, but I
- 28:38mean, you know, if I came on your
- 28:41channel, we started doing our thing
- 28:42together, then it's like we're
- 28:44splitting. And then if we have
- 28:45conflicting
- 28:47um, you know, art artistic
- 28:50progression like because I mean, you're
- 28:52the CEO, the producer, the director, the
- 28:55actor of Mighty Comics and Collectibles.
- 28:58I'm Sticky Goose and we are our own
- 29:02people and I don't work well with
- 29:06others. I just I know myself. Um I I
- 29:11mean I
- 29:12but I know exactly what you're saying.
- 29:14If you can get somebody like because
- 29:17that's what you want, that banter
- 29:19because you don't have to because right
- 29:20now you're carrying the weight of Mighty
- 29:23Comics and Collectibles on your freaking
- 29:25shoulders. like it's it's not like it
- 29:29starts and stops with you
- 29:31>> and it's it's hard.
- 29:34>> But let me just say this. If let's say
- 29:38and I'm going to use as an example. I'm
- 29:39not saying this is going to happen, but
- 29:41let's say this one blows up, right?
- 29:43>> This one that we doing blows up and
- 29:45people say we want to see more of this.
- 29:47Like this is on Mighty Comics
- 29:50Collectibles channel for now, but it's
- 29:51also on its own channel which is got
- 29:53like [ __ ] 20 subscribers. So, if that
- 29:56was something you or I'm not just saying
- 29:57you or anyone who I approached and
- 29:59approached said, you know what, this has
- 30:01been really good.
- 30:02>> Yeah.
- 30:02>> Let's do it on our own on a separate
- 30:05channel and you'd split everything down
- 30:07the middle. We do have to work each. I
- 30:09mean, obviously me obviously I do a lot
- 30:12more editing than a lot of people out
- 30:14there. So, but you'd have to divide up
- 30:15the work, but at the end the end of the
- 30:17day, the entertainment is coming from
- 30:19two people or three people, however many
- 30:21people are on the show. So, is that
- 30:23something that you'd be interested in
- 30:24going forward? I'm not saying it's going
- 30:25to happen with me, but like if if you
- 30:26were approached with that and somebody
- 30:28came at you with that idea, is that
- 30:29something you would be like, you know
- 30:30what, if it's going to get me to where I
- 30:33want and we could do this together, why
- 30:34not?
- 30:36>> Yeah. Yeah. All right.
- 30:37>> It seems like that
- 30:40um because
- 30:42it's not happening in the comic space
- 30:44like the biggest comic people like comic
- 30:46comic story alone, comics explained,
- 30:50he's alone. I mean, they they might have
- 30:52editors, but I don't include that. I'm
- 30:55talking about the personalities on the
- 30:58screen and um but like I look at like
- 31:01the video game space like they they
- 31:04develop these like groups. Uh, I don't I
- 31:07don't know how familiar you are with
- 31:08that, but like the kind of funny people,
- 31:10Funhouse, Achievement Hunter, Rooster
- 31:13Teeth, like they they they got like a
- 31:17group and then they had so many
- 31:19different personalities and there was
- 31:21somebody for everybody because I
- 31:22realized when you click on a Sticky
- 31:24Goose video, you either like me or you
- 31:26don't. Like it's it this is my this is
- 31:29my stick. This is it. But if I was like
- 31:32a part of a hole and it's like, "Oh well
- 31:35[ __ ] Sticky Goose is on this one. He's
- 31:37gonna be a wild card. Oh man, I'm glad
- 31:40Sticky isn't on this one." So, you know,
- 31:41I'm glad to hear Mighty like that. Yes.
- 31:45Yes.
- 31:47I I think there's an idea in there.
- 31:49That's the thing. I think if you get the
- 31:51right people together, it could be
- 31:52[ __ ] pure gold. I think that's that's
- 31:55what we're all looking for doing this.
- 31:57But I think this is also a good segue
- 31:58into the last thing I want to talk about
- 32:00with you and that is other YouTubers if
- 32:03you want to talk about it. Um,
- 32:06I've been pretty vocal about, obviously,
- 32:09you know, I put work into this. You
- 32:11know, I take it seriously, but
- 32:13>> yes,
- 32:14>> uh, there are people out there who I
- 32:16think say that they call themselves
- 32:19either comic book YouTubers or any type
- 32:21of YouTubers or just kind of come on and
- 32:22just like not a podcast like this, but
- 32:25they just come on and just talk about
- 32:27their favorite things. And I think
- 32:28that's totally fine. But then we have
- 32:29things like the comic book community
- 32:31awards and you know the people are
- 32:33getting awards for just kind of doing
- 32:35that thing. Yeah, I know you're going to
- 32:37break it out for anybody's listening
- 32:39onto on just the podcast without
- 32:40watching. He's showing his comic book
- 32:42community award. But like to me like I
- 32:45don't know like I was a little bit
- 32:46miffed and I don't really care because
- 32:47I'm not like a big avid of the award
- 32:49thing. But like that they took away like
- 32:51the larger channel uh award winners.
- 32:54What do you think about people out there
- 32:56who who come on YouTube and and kind of
- 32:59put out what they're putting out? I hate
- 33:00to put it like that, but that's what it
- 33:02is.
- 33:02>> Yeah, it's it's sticker people. It the
- 33:04thing is is pe people are wanting
- 33:06different things out of this. Like you
- 33:08and I are ambitious. Like if we're
- 33:12putting out a piece of content, it needs
- 33:15to be edited. You want you're respecting
- 33:17the person's time. you know, the content
- 33:20that you're putting out, it's content
- 33:23that you would want to consume. It's
- 33:25something that uh you feel like is is
- 33:29relevant or it's not wasting the
- 33:31person's time. There's people on here
- 33:33that just get on here and they're just
- 33:35going live habitually and it and and it
- 33:39just turns into like why is this even
- 33:42live? Like do this on your own time.
- 33:46like and it's it's cluttering the
- 33:49algorithm. It clutters the thing like
- 33:52what this sounds elitist. It sounds
- 33:54gatekeeping. But if we want this to grow
- 33:59like it we should it should weed out
- 34:03itself and and it has to an extent
- 34:06because c certain YouTubers obviously
- 34:09are much much better but even they're
- 34:12not growing exponentially. I mean, it's
- 34:16this is a slow growth.
- 34:19>> Yeah. I I for me, like I said, I I
- 34:21there's nothing wrong with coming out
- 34:23with your buddies and just want to, you
- 34:24know, talk and and listen to comments
- 34:26and respond to comments. I do it. You
- 34:28did it last week. I was on listening to
- 34:29your show when you did it just to kind
- 34:30of go on and have fun. I think that's
- 34:32totally fine.
- 34:33>> But then I hear people talk about like,
- 34:35oh, you know, my views and whatever.
- 34:37Like, listen, if you like, if you want
- 34:39views, like that's not the stuff you
- 34:40should be doing. It's just it's just not
- 34:42what it is. It's just my opinion. So, I
- 34:43know I'm going to get killed on this,
- 34:44which is fine. We're allowed to have our
- 34:46own opinion, but the amount of work that
- 34:47that we put into this stuff, like that's
- 34:50where we're coming from.
- 34:51>> I There was one there was one individual
- 34:53and he he's he's like like one of the
- 34:56kings of the sticker people. He he this
- 34:58is a thing he said. He says he did not
- 35:01want to edit videos or produce something
- 35:05that he would be afraid that he would
- 35:07have to continue to produce at that
- 35:10level. Those were his words.
- 35:13And he he said it in such a
- 35:14matter-of-act way. He truly believed it
- 35:17and it was it encapsulated it honestly
- 35:20it's like disrespectful. Like it's like
- 35:23I'm going to [ __ ] this stuff out and I'm
- 35:26not going to put any work into it
- 35:28because I don't want to have to repeat
- 35:31that work. Like do you know how pathetic
- 35:33that is? Like like that is the mentality
- 35:36of all of them. And it just
- 35:41it's it's funny because
- 35:44those people are the people watching
- 35:46these videos.
- 35:48>> So
- 35:49your your audience,
- 35:52you don't realize that a major a large
- 35:55portion of your audience is other comic
- 35:58book YouTubers because this is like part
- 36:01of our hobby. like it's this our hobby
- 36:04is YouTube and the other YouTubers are
- 36:08doing this too. So
- 36:12it's it's a it's a double-edged sword.
- 36:14Like when you start calling them out
- 36:16>> Yeah, it is. It really is. But that's
- 36:19the game with that we you know that the
- 36:21game that's the game that we're playing
- 36:22right now unfortunately with YouTube.
- 36:23But you know that's our space. I hate to
- 36:26say it but that's that's what we're in
- 36:27right now. like there. It's crazy
- 36:31because you know what what is the
- 36:32Pokemon space look like right now? I bet
- 36:35the space is booming. Like you're you're
- 36:38a new YouTuber that comes on talking
- 36:41Pokemon. You've got a decent
- 36:42personality. You've got good editing,
- 36:44good lighting, yada yada yada. You're
- 36:47probably surging. You're probably
- 36:50>> 15 20,000 subscriber for us. No, that's
- 36:5450 for them. You know, what does that
- 36:56space look like? Is this just a
- 36:58stagnated space? What you're doing right
- 37:02now, you're taking risks. You're going
- 37:04outside the box. I I have tried that and
- 37:08I I guess I'm falling into that trap of
- 37:11just like stick to what I know. If you'd
