- 0:09Your travels have brought you to the Surfing
- 0:11Your Edge podcast, where we explore what it
- 0:14takes to create the bigger, bolder, badass life
- 0:17you know you were born for.
- 0:19Not a life that simply looks good on
- 0:21paper, and not another spin on the self
- 0:24-help hamster wheel.
- 0:26If you're ready for more joy, more peace,
- 0:28and more contribution, you're in the right place.
- 0:32I'm Kristine Goad, the Surfing Your Edge coach.
- 0:35Let's get surfing.
- 0:36It is imperative that I record this for
- 0:40you today, because I am in that rare
- 0:43situation where the cat is alive, and the
- 0:46cat is dead, and we won't know which
- 0:49one it really is until we open the
- 0:51box.
- 0:53And I just thought it would be fun
- 0:55to record as the cat in the box.
- 0:58So I hope you will come with me
- 1:00for, I think this is going to be
- 1:02a short episode, we'll see, but we're going
- 1:04to do a little romp through some quantum
- 1:06physics, some future psychology, and maybe even a
- 1:10little evolutionary biology as we examine where I'm
- 1:15at right at this very moment.
- 1:17Okay, so here's the thing.
- 1:19Back in 2019, I learned about a group
- 1:23called X-Expedition, and it's an organization that
- 1:28was co-founded by Emily Penn.
- 1:30She is a woman who ended up on
- 1:35a sailboat for a year unexpectedly, and while
- 1:38she was out doing her ocean bathing, one
- 1:42day realized she was in the middle of
- 1:44the ocean and was seeing human plastics products
- 1:50floating by.
- 1:52And the closest humans to her at the
- 1:54moment were above her in the space station.
- 1:59So it was really odd for her to
- 2:02find this plastic in the ocean, and it
- 2:06set her on a new path where she
- 2:08went on to create X-Expedition, which is
- 2:10a group of women who travel by sailboat
- 2:13around the globe studying plastics in the ocean.
- 2:19And they are, they released their trips for
- 2:242027, and one of them goes from Hawaii
- 2:28to Vancouver through the Great Pacific Garbage Patch
- 2:35in the Pacific Ocean.
- 2:37And I applied to be one of the
- 2:4010 citizen scientists that they take on board
- 2:44for that journey.
- 2:46I also applied for the subsequent journey, which
- 2:49is from Vancouver to Seattle, just because that
- 2:53would be lovely, but I think it's pretty
- 2:57obvious to everyone who's been anywhere near me
- 3:00lately that the journey I really want to
- 3:03do is from Hawaii to Vancouver.
- 3:05There are so many reasons I want to
- 3:08do that.
- 3:09Maybe I should get into those.
- 3:11One of them is that when I was
- 3:1329, I did the cross-country bike trip.
- 3:15You've probably heard more about that than you
- 3:17care to hear.
- 3:19I did the cross-country bike trip from
- 3:21Seattle to Washington, D.C., which was a
- 3:233,000 mile trip.
- 3:25So 29 years later, if I get this
- 3:28position, I will be traveling another 3,000
- 3:33miles, but this time by boat.
- 3:35So I just think the symmetry of that
- 3:37is gorgeous.
- 3:38And I also am the surfing your edge
- 3:41coach because I'm afraid of open water.
- 3:43So this would be another opportunity for me
- 3:47to really, really, really deal with my fear
- 3:51of open water.
- 3:54So, yeah, I want to do this big,
- 3:56scary thing that also requires fundraising.
- 4:02Right.
- 4:02The expedition is expensive.
- 4:05So I will have a fundraising component that
- 4:08needs to happen as well as being able
- 4:11to fund my own travel and my gear
- 4:14and all of that.
- 4:15So this is a life-changing opportunity that
- 4:20I'm sitting on the cusp of.
- 4:22And I don't know yet whether I will
- 4:25be one of the lucky, amazing women who
- 4:28get to do this amazing adventure.
- 4:32But what I want to talk about, the
- 4:34reason I want to do this episode today,
- 4:39while I'm in the middle of not knowing,
- 4:41while I'm the cat in the box, who
- 4:43doesn't know if she's alive or dead, I
- 4:46want to talk to you about how I'm
- 4:48handling that.
- 4:49In the past, I might have equally examined
- 4:54both possibilities and felt like, oh, it's a
- 4:5750-50 and not really know which side
- 5:02I plan to be on.
- 5:03But for this one, I know very clearly
- 5:06that I intend to be the woman who's
- 5:09on that boat.
- 5:10So I have decided that it's less than
- 5:13nine months away.
- 5:14The beginning of this voyage is nine, less
- 5:17than nine months away.
- 5:18And I have at least 10 milestones I
- 5:22need to hit between here and there, one
- 5:25of which is getting chosen to be on
- 5:28the boat, but at least 10 milestones that
- 5:31I need to hit in the next nine
- 5:32months.
- 5:33So that is not a lot of time,
- 5:36especially for the size of some of these
- 5:38milestones.
- 5:39So I've decided that I'm just going to
- 5:42act as if I am the cat alive
- 5:45and I am on that boat and I
- 5:47am starting now to do the fundraising.
- 5:51I'm starting now to arrange my life into
- 5:54the life that the woman who leaves for
- 5:58that trip lives, right?
- 6:02She is a specific person.
- 6:05She has certain things she's achieved and certain
- 6:08ways of being in the world.
- 6:09And I've decided that I am simply going
- 6:11to be being that person today and from
- 6:15now on, regardless of what happens when someone
- 6:19finally opens the box and lets me know
- 6:21whether I am on the trip or not.
- 6:24So why would I do that, right?
- 6:26Why would I put all of my eggs
- 6:28in one basket?
- 6:29Why would I let myself want this so
- 6:32badly?
- 6:34Well, that's where we go from the quantum
- 6:35physics piece over to the future psychology piece,
- 6:39because psychology has started to realize that if
- 6:43you're able to imagine an episode in your
- 6:45future so vividly that you can hear it,
- 6:48you can smell it, you can taste it,
- 6:51you can touch things in it.
- 6:52When you vividly imagine a future experience, your
- 6:57brain actually uses some of the same systems
- 7:00you use when you remember things that have
- 7:02already happened.
- 7:04So the thing that you want to happen
- 7:06feels like it's already happened.
- 7:09It's already familiar.
- 7:11So imagining your future in vivid detail can
- 7:15make it feel more real and more possible.
- 7:18And research suggests that that can influence the
- 7:21decisions we make and the actions we take
- 7:23right now.
- 7:25And that is where I'm leaning into, right?
- 7:30I'm leaning into what does it feel like
- 7:33to be the woman who's in Honolulu?
- 7:36I think it's Honolulu.
- 7:38Anyway, Hawaii, who's in Hawaii and the boat
- 7:41is pushing away from shore, right?
- 7:44And it's going to be out at sea
- 7:45for three solid weeks as it crosses the
- 7:48ocean before it sees land again.
- 7:50And what does it feel like to be
- 7:55leaving land?
- 7:56What does it feel like to be rocking
- 7:57on the ocean?
- 7:59What does it feel like to be experiencing
- 8:02these, unfortunately, all sizes of plastic, but microscopic
- 8:09right up to macro?
- 8:11You know, what does it feel like to
- 8:16be seeing these pieces of plastic float by?
- 8:20I have some experience with that having been
- 8:22in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of
- 8:25Panama and seeing detergent bottles float by and
- 8:31seeing the plastic that has washed up on
- 8:35the shore in this beautiful World Heritage site
- 8:39that is pristine, aside from the fact that
- 8:43humans are spoiling it with plastics.
- 8:47So I have some sense of what that
- 8:48part of it feels like, but what does
- 8:50the air smell like?
- 8:52What does it feel like?
- 8:53What's the temperature?
- 8:54What is the food like, right?
- 8:56It's going to be completely vegetarian and cooked
- 8:59by us, right?
- 9:00We're going to be doing all of the
- 9:02cooking and cleaning in addition to all of
- 9:04the science and the night, you know, day
- 9:07and night watches and all of that.
- 9:09So if I can experience that fully in
- 9:13my imagination, I am much more likely to
- 9:17believe it's possible and start making the decisions
- 9:20and taking the steps that make that actually
- 9:24part of my future so that when somebody
- 9:27opens the box, I get to be the
- 9:29cat that's alive.
- 9:30So that is why I am leaning fully
- 9:34into the option that I get to go
- 9:39on this trip.
- 9:40The other thing I want to talk about
- 9:41in terms of future thinking is that it
- 9:48acts as a 10Xing mechanism, right?
- 9:53If I'm going to be the woman who
- 9:57leaves on this trip on July 15th from
- 10:00Hawaii, then I have to be the person
- 10:03who was capable of raising the funds.
- 10:06I was capable of organizing my business so
- 10:10that I can be out of it for
- 10:12a month and it can continue to run
- 10:13and support me and my husband.
- 10:16I'm the woman who has found an incredible
- 10:19babysitter for my dog while I'm away because
- 10:23Walt is a very special being who cannot
- 10:27be left alone.
- 10:29I will have become a person, a different
- 10:35person than I am right now, and I'm
- 10:37excited about who she is, and I've been
- 10:39thinking and feeling into her so that I
- 10:44can get there quick, right?
- 10:48So the person who shows up for that
- 10:52boat in July, there are certain things that
- 10:57I have to do between now and then
- 10:59in order to be that person, right?
- 11:01There's a filtering system.
- 11:04Will this get me on the boat?
- 11:06I don't know.
- 11:07Will it get me closer to being on
- 11:08the boat?
- 11:09Yes.
- 11:10Okay, then maybe we'll try that.
- 11:12Will this get me on the boat?
- 11:13No, then we don't do that, right?
- 11:15Anything that no longer gets me to being
- 11:19the person I want to be on July
- 11:2115th, 2027, as I board that boat, those
- 11:25decisions fall away.
- 11:27It's a filtering mechanism, which brings us to
- 11:31the third little piece of science we're going
- 11:33to mangle today, and that's punctuated equilibrium, which
- 11:40is the theory back in 1972, in evolutionary
- 11:47biology, it was Niles Eldridge and Stephen Jay
- 11:52Gould proposed that evolution in species is very
- 11:59stable for long periods of time, and then
- 12:01something happens in the environment to create a
- 12:05rapid evolution and a split where a new
- 12:09species just quickly arises.
- 12:12That is in contrast to the old way
- 12:16of thinking, which is that evolution happens in
- 12:20an incremental, slow, continuous forward motion.
- 12:25So punctuated equilibrium was created to talk about
- 12:31evolutionary biology, but it's also been applied to
- 12:36public policy and institutional change and all of
- 12:39that.
- 12:40So I feel completely confident that I can
- 12:45also apply it to my own evolution, right?
- 12:48I can go for long periods of time
- 12:50where I'm relatively stable, and then something happens
- 12:55to reorganize my life.
- 12:57When I was 29, and I went on
- 12:59that cross-country bike trip, I was looking
- 13:01for myself and I wanted it to reorganize
- 13:04my life, and it did.
- 13:05When I came home, I didn't have the
- 13:08answer I was looking for in terms of
- 13:10who am I and how do I fit
- 13:12in in the world, but I did have
- 13:15more information about who I was and how
- 13:18I operated in the world, and I used
- 13:21the next 28 years to become the person
- 13:27that I am now.
- 13:28I think that the surfing your edge coach
- 13:31that I am now comes directly out of
- 13:35having done the big ride across America.
- 13:38I created things that I needed then, right,
- 13:41that didn't exist or that I couldn't find.
- 13:44So I became the person I needed back
- 13:47when I got off that cross-country bike
- 13:49trip, and I'm 100% sure that the
- 13:53person who gets off the boat in Vancouver
- 13:57will use the next 20 to 30 years
- 14:00to evolve into her next way of being
- 14:04in the world, and I'm not quite sure
- 14:06what that will entail, but I've been looking
- 14:09for a long time for a way to
- 14:11get more involved in the big issues that
- 14:17are happening on this planet right now in
- 14:19terms of environment and climate and all of
- 14:22that.
- 14:23And this project, since I first heard about
- 14:26it back in 2019, hasn't left me alone,
- 14:31and I really feel like I'm going to
- 14:35be talking to you about plastics and water
- 14:37for a very long time.
- 14:40And as a result, I'll be talking about,
- 14:42you know, like the fact that we live
- 14:46in systems that we didn't choose, and how
- 14:50do we change them from within?
- 14:52How do we get outside of them and
- 14:54suggest other options?
- 14:56How do we force companies and governments to
- 15:00make different choices for us so that we
- 15:03have healthier options?
- 15:05So that's just a little prelude, preview, preview
- 15:10of what's to come if and when I
- 15:14get off this boat, and there's actually a
- 15:17chance that even if I don't go on
- 15:19this boat that I'm going to be talking
- 15:21to you about plastics and water and so
- 15:24many other things.
- 15:28So you might be wondering, like, what is
- 15:33my plan be, right?
- 15:34Like, what am I going to do if
- 15:36I put all of this energy and excitement
- 15:38into getting chosen for this leg of the
- 15:42journey and then I don't get chosen?
- 15:44What's my backup plan?
- 15:47And the honest answer is that I don't
- 15:50have a backup plan.
- 15:52I don't want a backup plan.
- 15:54I am living 100% into the future
- 15:57where the cat is alive and she's on
- 16:00the boat.
- 16:02If I get to the other side, and
- 16:04it turns out I'm the version of me
- 16:07that doesn't get to go on this particular
- 16:10leg of the journey, then there will be
- 16:13heartbreak and disappointment.
- 16:18And then there will be time for a
- 16:19plan B and for figuring out what comes
- 16:23next, what continues the momentum that I'm already
- 16:27beginning to create toward becoming this different person.
- 16:31And how do I continue to motivate myself
- 16:35and excite myself about an alternative that will
- 16:40get me to the same place or one
- 16:42close by near the one that I'm shooting
- 16:48for, right?
- 16:49The woman who has upleveled all aspects of
- 16:53her life, finances, health, confidence, scientific background, all
- 17:02of it.
- 17:03I want to be her and I've chosen
- 17:06her and I will get there one way
- 17:08or another.
- 17:10So some of the questions I might be
- 17:13thinking about in the next couple of weeks
- 17:18and months is what do I have to
- 17:21stop doing in order to become the person
- 17:24I want to be?
- 17:26What do I have to start doing in
- 17:28order to become the person I want to
- 17:30be?
- 17:32Who do I know who can help me
- 17:34become the person I want to be faster
- 17:37or more fully?
- 17:43Those are just some of the questions.
- 17:46Other questions?
- 17:48I'll keep you in the loop.
- 17:50All right, so that was our little romp
- 17:52through quantum physics, future psychology, and evolutionary biology.
- 17:57I hope you had fun and I hope
- 17:59I didn't mangle the science too terribly much.
- 18:04Stay tuned.
- 18:05And if you would like to help visualize
- 18:08me on that boat, the X Expedition North
- 18:13Pacific One route leaving in July of 2027,
- 18:19I would really appreciate your help.
- 18:22So while you're here with me, I'm going
- 18:26to go ahead and ask, is there something
- 18:29similar to this in your own life that
- 18:31could help you reach your next level quicker
- 18:39or in a way that is exciting, more
- 18:42exciting than the path that you're currently on?
- 18:45I'd love to hear about it.
