Latest / The Follow-On / "It's cricket utopia!" Rickelton & Mulder TON UP as Aussies face daunting 288-run chase! - RSA vs Australia 3rd Test, Day 4 Review
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to another episode of the joint Fox
- 0:03Speaker 1: Sports and Code Sports podcast, The Follow On. My name's
- 0:07Speaker 1: Courtney Walsh, senior writer for Fox Sports Australia, joined as
- 0:10Speaker 1: always by the mastermind from Code Sports, Dan Cherney, at
- 0:14Speaker 1: New Orleans after what was another incredible day of test cricket,
- 0:19Speaker 1: which sets the stage for what we all wanted, a finale,
- 0:24Speaker 1: a series finale on the last day of this test,
- 0:28Speaker 1: one apiece. Australia to bat, all ten wickets in hand,
- 0:32Speaker 1: 288 runs as the target.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Do we think we would get here? Perhaps not.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Maybe the only thing that might have made it a
- 0:38Speaker 1: little bit better was if Steve Smith was fit and
- 0:41Speaker 1: batting eight years after, obviously, the torrid time that he left. Nonetheless,
- 0:46Speaker 1: it seems it shapes as a truly fitting way to
- 0:50Speaker 1: what's been a gripping series.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Dan, take us through what happened today here at New Orleans.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Well, South Africa, after that late wicket last night with
- 0:58Speaker 3: Nathan Lyon getting tempted, which does feel a long time ago,
- 1:01Speaker 3: they were in dire straits. Four for 40, effectively four
- 1:04Speaker 3: for 40, four for 140, but the lead of just
- 1:06Speaker 3: 40 runs.
- 1:07Speaker 4: And they had a great day, though. They had a
- 1:09Speaker 4: great day. For most of the day, they only lost
- 1:10Speaker 4: one wicket.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Eventually, they lost the last five relatively quickly.
- 1:16Speaker 4: But it was the Vian Mulder and Ryan Rickson show.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Both made centuries.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Any time you get two guys making tons in the
- 1:22Speaker 3: third innings, Done pretty well, and that's what happened. They
- 1:24Speaker 3: put together, what was it, 154, I think, for the
- 1:28Speaker 3: sixth wicket. Matthew Breitsky was the fifth man to go.
- 1:33Speaker 4: He fell in the.
- 1:35Speaker 5: He actually stuck around for quite a while this morning.
- 1:38Speaker 4: This was the funny thing about the South African innings.
- 1:40Speaker 3: They stuck around for a significant period of time, and
- 1:44Speaker 3: in between, they actually batted with great discipline, but with
- 1:47Speaker 3: moments of madness.
- 1:48Speaker 4: And he had one of those moments of madness. Pat Cummins'
- 1:51Speaker 4: wicket drought.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Finally ended, And that was after, what was it, 374
- 1:56Speaker 3: deliveries and 210 runs. Yeah, he just pretty much pulled
- 2:00Speaker 3: him straight down the throat of Mitchell Stark at the
- 2:02Speaker 3: final leg. Anyway, it didn't matter too much because, as
- 2:04Speaker 3: I said, Mulder and Rickleton played the Aussies beautifully. Australia
- 2:07Speaker 3: just swinging around through bowlers. Second-year ball didn't matter. Mitchell
- 2:10Speaker 3: Stark unable to get anywhere near the same kind of
- 2:12Speaker 3: movement that he got for the second-year ball late on
- 2:14Speaker 3: day one. It was beautiful overhead again. And it was
- 2:17Speaker 3: a great day for South Africa. And they looked like
- 2:19Speaker 3: they were pounding Australia into the dust. The Aussies at
- 2:22Speaker 3: one point, I think they used eight different bowlers in
- 2:23Speaker 3: the second session alone. Six different bowlers and seven overs
- 2:27Speaker 3: at one stage. Which is this Cummins shuffle that he's
- 2:29Speaker 3: been prone to do in recent times. Famous in the
- 2:31Speaker 3: 2023 World Cup final and then yesterday, which did reap rewards.
- 2:35Speaker 3: But unfortunately, it didn't reap rewards for Australia until two runouts.
- 2:41Speaker 3: The first runout was, the first mix-up was just after
- 2:44Speaker 3: Rickleton made a century. Great piece of fielding from Josh Inglis.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Rickleton overcommitted.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Mulder pushed him back and Riddleton was run out, minus
- 2:54Speaker 3: Labashain collecting. And then Labashain himself got a direct hit
- 2:57Speaker 3: to remove Gerald Katsia. At one point, it looked like
- 2:59Speaker 3: Australia would be able to limit the damage to sort
- 3:01Speaker 3: of a chase of 260 or so. But right at
- 3:04Speaker 3: the end there, Mulder managed to get to a triple figures.
- 3:05Speaker 3: He batted beautifully with Kehisa Rabada. It was sort of
- 3:08Speaker 3: a one, I mean, it was one day without, one
- 3:09Speaker 3: day cricket without fielding restrictions. You had men on the
- 3:11Speaker 3: boundary everywhere.
- 3:12Speaker 4: The Aussies were losing the ball in the light with
- 3:14Speaker 4: Table Mountain in the backdrop.
- 3:16Speaker 3: In the end, as you touched on, Courtney, though, We
- 3:18Speaker 3: get to the final of the day, all out for 287, sorry, 387,
- 3:22Speaker 3: which because of the beautiful maths of 100-run leanity, first
- 3:25Speaker 3: things even, I'm smart enough to figure out that is
- 3:28Speaker 3: a 287-run lead, which means a 288-run chase, which in
- 3:32Speaker 3: my view means that all four results, South Africa win,
- 3:36Speaker 3: Australia win, draw, and dare I say it, even a tie,
- 3:40Speaker 3: are all up for grabs.
- 3:42Speaker 4: The pitch has been playing pretty well. It's a bit slow, but.
- 3:46Speaker 4: A bit hard to score. The ball got soft, particularly
- 3:48Speaker 4: as the ball got softer.
- 3:50Speaker 3: Not a ground where your seat sort of tends racing
- 3:53Speaker 3: along at five and over for a day, but a
- 3:57Speaker 3: bit over three and over for the day is certainly doable.
- 4:01Speaker 4: The pitch is still playing pretty well.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Obviously a little bit of turn there, but nothing dramatic.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Certainly not much bounce, not much anymore for the quicks.
- 4:09Speaker 3: New ball will be critical, of course, for South Africa
- 4:11Speaker 3: with Rabada and Janssen. as well as Gerald Castillo, who's
- 4:14Speaker 3: got plenty of pace too. They've got Mulder there, so
- 4:16Speaker 3: nip it around if need be. And of course, Simon Harmer,
- 4:19Speaker 3: who was excellent in the first innings and has been
- 4:21Speaker 3: really excellent for most of the series. With that, and
- 4:23Speaker 3: Wall will be a minister with that today. He shapes
- 4:25Speaker 3: as crucial tomorrow as well. So as you said, Courtney,
- 4:29Speaker 3: team one and two in the world comes down to
- 4:31Speaker 3: the very last three full five-day tests. Now, mind you,
- 4:34Speaker 3: the first was affected by bad light. The second affected
- 4:36Speaker 3: by rain. But this has been, we've got four full.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Days of cricket. Beautiful.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Really, it is cricket utopia. It is a Saturday at
- 4:41Speaker 3: Cape Town. So they show the prices up on this
- 4:43Speaker 3: big screen just near us.
- 4:44Speaker 1: $ 15, I think, Australian, or $ 16 Australian, $ 21 for the
- 4:49Speaker 1: better seats.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Exactly. Pretty affordable.
- 4:52Speaker 3: And as much as it was sort of ridiculous that
- 4:54Speaker 3: this test started on a Tuesday, the fact that it
- 4:56Speaker 3: has gone five days means that Saturday is the decider.
- 4:59Speaker 4: It's all come down to a Saturday. So, you know,
- 5:01Speaker 4: there should be no shortage of people willing to go.
- 5:03Speaker 3: It'll be prime time in Australia on Fox Cricket and
- 5:06Speaker 3: KO Sports, with a plug there. But it's live and exclusive,
- 5:10Speaker 3: 7.30 p.m. Eastern, time, daylight time, I mean, really doesn't
- 5:14Speaker 3: get any better than that. It barely does. So, yeah,
- 5:18Speaker 3: what did you make of the way the day pan
- 5:20Speaker 3: out from an Australian perspective? I dare say, the synopsis
- 5:24Speaker 3: I'd just say is they would have been hoping for more,
- 5:27Speaker 3: but it's not gone beyond them by the same stretch.
- 5:30Speaker 2: What would you say?
- 5:31Speaker 1: Yeah, look, I think when we arrived, having seen what
- 5:34Speaker 1: we saw last night with that last over from line
- 5:36Speaker 1: and also a couple of signs, we thought, okay, it
- 5:39Speaker 1: is a day for pitch.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Yes, the weather's been magnificent. It's been baking. But things
- 5:43Speaker 2: start to change in pitches.
- 5:44Speaker 1: And both, to be fair, Simon Harmer, who came.
- 5:47Speaker 2: In last night, I can't believe my website called him
- 5:50Speaker 2: a villain on stage, given he's very eloquent and considered
- 5:53Speaker 2: and careful. Sorry, you know, he speaks so.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Well and has played incredibly on this in the last
- 5:59Speaker 1: two tests. He sort of expected it would change, would alter.
- 6:03Speaker 1: We didn't really see that. Do we see that overnight?
- 6:06Speaker 1: I'm not so sure. The one wildcard factor will be
- 6:09Speaker 1: there is supposed to be cloud cover tomorrow, and we
- 6:11Speaker 1: know that it's a bit harder to bat. There is
- 6:14Speaker 1: a saying here about if the table mountain is covered,
- 6:18Speaker 1: it can make it a little trickier, but we'll see
- 6:20Speaker 1: what happens there. No doubt Australia, they had four wickets.
- 6:24Speaker 1: The lead was 40 runs when we arrived. I am
- 6:27Speaker 1: sure they would have loved to have made inroads in
- 6:29Speaker 1: the first session.
- 6:31Speaker 2: No doubt. It's indisputable. It was said the first hour
- 6:33Speaker 2: was going to be critical. South Africa batted obstinately through
- 6:37Speaker 2: that period.
- 6:38Speaker 1: What I thought was really notable, we've just had Ryan
- 6:41Speaker 1: Rickleton come into press afterwards, James.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Faulkner, the Australian bowling coach.
- 6:45Speaker 1: When a bowling coach or when a batting coach comes
- 6:47Speaker 1: in from a test team, you know that the day
- 6:49Speaker 1: hasn't gone particularly well for that team, given generally it'll
- 6:53Speaker 1: be a player that comes up.
- 6:54Speaker 2: But on this occasion, it was James Faulkner, the Australian
- 6:56Speaker 2: bowling coach.
- 6:57Speaker 4: James Franklin.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Sorry, James Franklin. James Faulkner, of course.
- 7:00Speaker 4: James Franklin.
- 7:01Speaker 2: The Rickleton....
- 7:06Speaker 1: Spoke and and what he said i thought was really
- 7:09Speaker 1: important with discipline he loves scoring runs in terms of
- 7:14Speaker 1: pulling and hooking he batted with discipline he shelved it
- 7:18Speaker 1: he said when you're facing this attack you just you
- 7:21Speaker 1: can't do it he said he was prepared to wear
- 7:23Speaker 1: a couple some of his teammates did not do this
- 7:25Speaker 1: david benningham didn't do it even later marco yanson didn't
- 7:29Speaker 1: do it bretsky's got out Look, so, you know, Australia,
- 7:33Speaker 1: it's interesting, Franklin said afterwards, you know.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Australia's had success with that short pitch delivery. Yep, we have.
- 7:38Speaker 1: And, you know, conversely, South Africa, if you go back
- 7:41Speaker 1: through it, I think a mate of yours from Crickviz
- 7:44Speaker 1: had this set up today about South Africa's ability to,
- 7:48Speaker 1: against the short ball, it's been an Achilles heel for them.
- 7:51Speaker 1: I guess the thing you would point out, though, is
- 7:54Speaker 1: they lost three wickets to the short ball and they
- 7:57Speaker 1: made 387 runs.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Was it successful?
- 8:00Speaker 1: I'm not so sure that it necessarily was. And that
- 8:03Speaker 1: then brings into the equation, as is always the case.
- 8:06Speaker 2: You know, hindsight quarterbacks, et cetera.
- 8:09Speaker 1: We go back to pay the bowling decision with Pat
- 8:11Speaker 1: Cummins at the start. You know, I guess we find
- 8:14Speaker 1: out tomorrow what happens and how that pitch plays. So
- 8:16Speaker 1: that'll be the ultimate judgment. The other one, of course,
- 8:19Speaker 1: was Scott Boland having taken five wickets, batted so bravely,
- 8:23Speaker 1: but it was more the five wickets.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Vernon Philander was very strong. He ran through Australia fast.
- 8:27Speaker 1: 15 years ago, he hit for 47 in the last
- 8:30Speaker 1: innings after Australia was in a strong position in that test.
- 8:33Speaker 1: He was saying that just here, you know, while the
- 8:37Speaker 1: shorter pitch stuff works and it works well for Australia
- 8:39Speaker 1: in Durban, across South Africa, it's.
- 8:43Speaker 2: More the senior pitchers. And he said Boland just had
- 8:46Speaker 2: to play given what he does. Now, afterwards, I thought
- 8:49Speaker 2: Rickleton offered a really balanced assessment.
- 8:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I agree with that.
- 8:53Speaker 1: The three Australian cricks actually bowled very well. Whether they did,
- 8:57Speaker 1: but I think they bowled... They didn't bowl poorly. I
- 9:00Speaker 1: don't think they bowled poorly, no. Maybe it wasn't their
- 9:02Speaker 1: brilliant best, but there was not much on offer. Lyon,
- 9:05Speaker 1: you know, again, whether he delivered like he would have expected,
- 9:08Speaker 1: but again, I thought.
- 9:08Speaker 2: He was very tight. He was very tight.
- 9:10Speaker 4: He didn't give much away.
- 9:11Speaker 2: They didn't give the runs away necessarily.
- 9:13Speaker 1: 240 runs in a day is what they've scored, effectively,
- 9:15Speaker 1: South Africa. So, brilliant batting conditions. So, there's two ways
- 9:20Speaker 1: to look at it. They didn't bowl them out. As
- 9:22Speaker 1: you said, they didn't get away. I'm sure they would
- 9:24Speaker 1: have preferred 150 as the target rather than 287, and
- 9:27Speaker 1: that sits right at the upper echelon in terms of
- 9:31Speaker 1: chasers to try and win here.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Do you think there's four results on offer?
- 9:35Speaker 1: Rickleton was, no, it's either we win or we lose.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Although he offered later on that it might be a draw.
- 9:41Speaker 2: But for mine, wow.
- 9:42Speaker 5: I really hope, as much as the tie would be great,
- 9:45Speaker 5: I really hope it's not a tie because it would
- 9:46Speaker 5: be too much work. It would be a very late
- 9:48Speaker 5: finish once again here. So, look, fascinating to see. But,
- 9:52Speaker 5: you know, I think Australians will wake up and think
- 9:56Speaker 5: it wasn't a great day. I also think it was...
- 10:00Speaker 5: based on the conditions, not, you know, they couldn't have
- 10:05Speaker 5: given much more, I don't think.
- 10:06Speaker 4: Well, also, look, it was very, very much in line
- 10:08Speaker 4: with the way this match has panned out.
- 10:10Speaker 3: It was pretty much all the key themes that we've
- 10:12Speaker 3: seen across the first three days played out today, with
- 10:14Speaker 3: the exception of runouts, which we hadn't seen in one
- 10:16Speaker 3: all series.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Inglis was magnificent.
- 10:18Speaker 4: That performance, that effort was magnificent.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Marnus was great.
- 10:20Speaker 3: And suddenly, after no runouts for almost three tests, we
- 10:23Speaker 3: get two in the space.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Of half an hour. But, yeah, you look at all
- 10:27Speaker 4: the major themes of this test. Big partnerships, tick. Wickets
- 10:32Speaker 4: in clumps, tick.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Tick.
- 10:34Speaker 4: We saw the last five South Africans fall pretty quickly.
- 10:37Speaker 3: The last one dragged a bit longer, but we got
- 10:40Speaker 3: six to nine fell in quick succession. And a lot of,
- 10:44Speaker 3: and what was very well pointed out at the press
- 10:48Speaker 3: conference was that no catches, well, so the only, no
- 10:54Speaker 3: conventional catches behind the wicket. There was a start on
- 10:56Speaker 3: a short ball wicket yesterday with Ackerman. But no outside edge,
- 11:01Speaker 3: nick off, inside edge, nothing like that.
- 11:04Speaker 4: It was not that sort of wicket. Well, and more
- 11:06Speaker 4: to the point, it was certainly not that style of bowling.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Australia bought a lot of short stuff, which we said Ackerman, well,
- 11:13Speaker 3: not Ackerman so much, but Rickleton and Muller should have
- 11:16Speaker 3: shouldered arms too for the most part. I suppose, look,
- 11:19Speaker 3: we will never know the counterfactual. Touch on the bowling situation. Like,
- 11:23Speaker 3: you know, he would have brought the stumps more into play.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Would that have been enough? Hard to know, would have
- 11:26Speaker 3: been easy to get away, more runs. Rickleton made that point.
- 11:28Speaker 3: He said, you know, it wasn't offering much. Maybe he
- 11:31Speaker 3: was going to be hittable. Which, that was always the
- 11:32Speaker 3: thing with Bowler, and that's why he hasn't played as
- 11:34Speaker 3: much in some of these flatter wickets, because we know
- 11:37Speaker 3: what England did to him in England in 2023, and
- 11:39Speaker 3: that put him only out for the best part of
- 11:41Speaker 3: 18 months.
- 11:44Speaker 4: Ultimately, like all these things, it's going to be judged
- 11:45Speaker 4: through hindsight.
- 11:46Speaker 3: And look, this is why tomorrow, you know, we've sort
- 11:49Speaker 3: of banged on about this, but legacies are defined by
- 11:52Speaker 3: days like these. because the whole tour, this odyssey, every
- 11:57Speaker 3: part of this is going to be viewed through the
- 11:59Speaker 3: prism of whether Australia can win this test tomorrow and
- 12:01Speaker 3: pull off an outstanding run chase, or if they lose.
- 12:05Speaker 3: And if they win, you know, all the questions get
- 12:08Speaker 3: pushed to the one side and they're geniuses. And if
- 12:10Speaker 3: they win, obviously one or two guys have gone and
- 12:12Speaker 3: made more, at least probably a couple have gone on
- 12:15Speaker 3: contributions with the bat.
- 12:17Speaker 4: If they lose, you know, again, the questions around the
- 12:19Speaker 4: batting depth again.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Again, coming to things, and more to the point, I
- 12:22Speaker 3: think if they lose tomorrow, then the toss situation gets
- 12:24Speaker 3: scrutinised to the nth degree, and fairly so. Maybe some
- 12:28Speaker 3: of the situation around Steve Smith, and then particularly the
- 12:30Speaker 3: situation around the non-selection of Boland. And the biggest, most
- 12:35Speaker 3: fascinating part of all that now, with all this backdrop
- 12:39Speaker 3: in my... I mean, there's so many parts, but I
- 12:41Speaker 3: think probably the most interesting subplot now is that Australia
- 12:45Speaker 3: being set, 288 on the final day of test, has
- 12:48Speaker 3: given Marnus Labuschagne one last chance. Unless Travis Head and
- 12:53Speaker 3: Matt Bringshaw can fight through most of this chase, which
- 12:55Speaker 3: seems a pretty remote chance as well, as good as
- 12:57Speaker 3: they are and as capable as they are, the reality
- 12:59Speaker 3: that the Openers are going to get most of it
- 13:01Speaker 3: done is highly unlikely. So there will be a chance,
- 13:04Speaker 3: almost certainly, for Marnus Labuschagne to have one last innings.
- 13:07Speaker 3: We saw him make a contribution today in the field.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Had plenty of energy as always. He bowled not particularly well,
- 13:12Speaker 3: but that's not what he's in the team for.
- 13:15Speaker 4: So you just never know. You just never know.
- 13:17Speaker 3: We've seen guys back against the wall centuries, you know, famously.
- 13:20Speaker 3: I mean, Steve Waugh at the SCG. Mike Hussey, I believe.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Yeah, Steve Waugh at the SCG in 2003. Mike Hussey
- 13:27Speaker 4: at the Oval, the fifth test, in a losing cause.
- 13:29Speaker 3: You know, set a big target, and he made the
- 13:31Speaker 3: century at the Oval in 2009. Mark Taylor in the
- 13:35Speaker 3: opening test at the Ashes in 1997 when, you know,
- 13:38Speaker 3: the world was on his shoulders.
- 13:39Speaker 4: And again, they lost that match. But, you know, guys
- 13:42Speaker 4: can do this. You just never know. And maybe.
- 13:46Speaker 3: He'll be going there tonight thinking this could be my
- 13:49Speaker 3: last day ever as a test cricketer. But you've got
- 13:51Speaker 3: to make it count. So it's going to be fast. Look, really,
- 13:54Speaker 3: it is set up beautifully. I mean, what more could
- 13:55Speaker 3: you ask? It's been magnificent. No, it's not a conventional
- 13:59Speaker 3: test in the sense of... It's a conventional test in
- 14:02Speaker 3: the sense of the rhythms. Maybe not conventional in the
- 14:03Speaker 3: sense of guys nicking off and that. And unfortunately, just
- 14:07Speaker 3: the way it's gone is that these matches tend to
- 14:11Speaker 3: bring out a lot of short stuff.
- 14:12Speaker 4: Which, you know... It's not necessarily pretty cricket to watch.
- 14:16Speaker 4: It can be quite attritional.
- 14:17Speaker 3: But there's also some guts and some courage and virtue
- 14:24Speaker 3: in an innings like Rickleton when you're willing to absorb
- 14:27Speaker 3: some blows in the body, put it away, mitigate risk,
- 14:30Speaker 3: get the runs that are offered. And as he touched
- 14:32Speaker 3: on with Hazelwood, Stark and Cummins, these guys are all
- 14:33Speaker 3: deep in their 30s. Hazelwood and Stark, they do tire.
- 14:37Speaker 4: And eventually, if you can wear them down, you manage
- 14:40Speaker 4: to get away. And that's what they did.
- 14:42Speaker 3: And they, you know, at one point, it looked like
- 14:44Speaker 3: they were going to bat Australia completely out of it.
- 14:46Speaker 4: So the Aussies did quite well to get back.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Cannot wait for tomorrow. As always, you'll be able to
- 14:51Speaker 1: read Dan's work at codesports.com.au. Also in the papers around
- 14:55Speaker 1: the country, the News Corp papers around the country. I'll
