- 0:00All right, there we go. We are live.
- 0:02You are live. You are looking live.
- 0:04This is another live edition of the Rick Mass show.
- 0:07I'm Charlie Marlowe. That is the great Rick Mass.
- 0:10We're going to talk all things NASCAR.
- 0:11We got a lot to talk about today, Rick.
- 0:13How are you doing, Sir? Doing well, Charlie.
- 0:17Doing well, my man. Good to hear, good to hear.
- 0:21OK, let's start out because we we put this on the title, just a
- 0:25little bit of a lawsuit update with NASCAR and 2311 racing in
- 0:29Front Row Motorsports. We don't have to discuss it at
- 0:33length, but it's interesting and it's kind of topical.
- 0:35So I'll just read a little bit of the reporting.
- 0:37First we got Bob Pop Grass of Fox Sports and he says so he
- 0:41tweets this last night. NASCAR just filed a response to
- 0:45preliminary injunction motion. So some quick notes from this.
- 0:50The new charter deal is 7 years with a possible extension.
- 0:54Neither 2311 or Front Row Motorsports has submitted a
- 0:58request yet for a charter transfer from Stewart Haas
- 1:02Racing. So that's pretty interesting
- 1:04there. NASCAR plans for a season with
- 1:0632 charters and eight open positions as of now.
- 1:12And so that's from Bob Pograss. NASCAR is saying their main
- 1:16arguments against this injunction are that the teams
- 1:19can still run as open cars and if the teams win, they can get
- 1:24their monetary damages can be calculated after that.
- 1:29And then I just want to read one more thing before I get your
- 1:31thoughts. Of course, Rick.
- 1:32I promise. I promise I'll shut up.
- 1:33Soon. And this is from then Matt
- 1:36Weaver who writes for Sports not and so basically 2311 in front
- 1:41row. They issued a strongly worded
- 1:43opening statement and they say here quote defendants opposition
- 1:48prematurely argues the merits of plaintiffs preliminary
- 1:51injunction misrepresents the discovery that plaintiffs seek
- 1:55and like any monopolistic bully attacks plaintiffs for daring to
- 2:01question their authority. So I won't read everything, but
- 2:04basically 2311 in front row. They want NASCAR to open up the
- 2:09books. They want these six documents.
- 2:12They want it relatively quickly through discovery.
- 2:15NASCAR saying no, that's where we are.
- 2:18Rick Mast, what do you think? Yeah, they, you know what that I
- 2:21mean that this is this is this is lawyer talk, man.
- 2:25I'm telling you, I've been, you know, been around this stuff and
- 2:28involved and listened it all. And this is just the stuff that
- 2:31we're going to hear all the time.
- 2:32And it's, it's both sides, you know, jockeying for their
- 2:36position, you know, that they, both sides in these cases, they,
- 2:39they do everything. They jockey, they, they make
- 2:41their cases, they, they expand their cases, they do things, say
- 2:46things on the cases that really have no relevance sometimes in a
- 2:50court of law. And, you know, that's all,
- 2:53that's all this is, that's all this is, Charlie.
- 2:56And you know, until they get in front of a judge, you know, we,
- 3:00you know, all this stuff is speculation.
- 3:01We don't know the east side. You know, east side makes your
- 3:04claims. That's the way it works in these
- 3:06lawsuits. And you know, some claims are
- 3:09out landing, some are not. I mean, it's obvious NASCAR's
- 3:12dug their you know, they they dug their heels to saying, Nope,
- 3:16you didn't sign the charter. You ain't get the charter.
- 3:18You ain't coming in you brief race.
- 3:20But we ain't giving you a charter, right.
- 3:21They dug your heels to saying legally in the in their in their
- 3:24in their briefs, you know, in the other sides dug their heels
- 3:28in. We ain't signed this stupid
- 3:29charter. You're screwing us and it ain't
- 3:31good. You're screwing everybody and
- 3:32you're all terrible and you know we ain't going to do it like
- 3:36that. Well, that's your two sides,
- 3:37dude, And now that's up to the judge to and then what?
- 3:41The one thing it is kind of tell him a little bit is they asked
- 3:45for a jury trial. You know, the 2311 did front
- 3:48row. I doubt it to get to them.
- 3:50I don't know. I shouldn't even say that I
- 3:51should not only strike that I don't know what that means or
- 3:54what that gets to, but asking for a jury trial and I'm sure
- 3:57NASCAR wants a judge, you know, not a jury trial.
- 4:00I don't know, you know, but anyhow, that's that's really the
- 4:03only thing in this whole deal so far that's intrigued me a little
- 4:06bit. It would be if this thing, if it
- 4:10ever does go before a judge for final determination because
- 4:13they, you know, in these cases, they always try to mediate the
- 4:16the judges, the courts, they, they do everything in their
- 4:19power to get the two sides to mediate in any of these type of
- 4:23lawsuits and suits that goes on. And if it was to get to to a
- 4:28courtroom and mediation didn't work and it was to get to a
- 4:30courtroom, is a judge going to hear it or 12 jurors going to
- 4:33hear it? Now that's something we'll talk
- 4:35about here on the Rick Mass show, OK, It was to get to that.
- 4:38That's that's the only thing right now that really intrigues
- 4:41me about it. Other than that, it's just a
- 4:42just a typical damn lawsuit that goes on every day in our great
- 4:45country. Yeah, it's funny because I was
- 4:47kind of laughing as I was reading it.
- 4:49It is such, you said lawyer talk.
- 4:51That's the perfect way to describe it.
- 4:52It's legalese, it's jargon. I think at first when this
- 4:56lawsuit dropped it, it is very interesting and it it could be a
- 4:59seismic shift in the sport. As it drags on, though, it does
- 5:04get kind of boring. I mean, you have some some
- 5:07headlines and what not, but the monopolistic bullies, they
- 5:09already basically wrote that in their first briefing when the
- 5:13lawsuit was, was filed. So I don't know.
- 5:16I, I feel like at this time of the season with the playoffs in
- 5:19full swing, I, I've now kind of shifted to, to kind of like,
- 5:24let's focus on the lawsuit in the offseason.
- 5:27I do think it's going to be very interesting, but now we're into
- 5:303-4 weeks of it. It's very important.
- 5:32But I feel like the fans, they are going to probably get a
- 5:35little tired of it and it's like a, let's finish the racing.
- 5:38We have a month of the playoffs. It's going to be fantastic.
- 5:42And just from a consumption standpoint, let's revisit this
- 5:46once the season ends. That's how I'm kind of thinking
- 5:48now, even though that we create content in this space and people
- 5:52watch it, but I'm kind of like, all right, let's, let's, let's
- 5:54do the races and then we'll handle the lawsuit afterwards.
- 5:57Yeah, that's kind of what's happened.
- 5:59It made a big, it made the big splash when it was announced and
- 6:02that whole week we got play time, excuse me, we got play
- 6:06time here. You got play time on all the all
- 6:08the networks national news and then it kind of died out.
- 6:11And that's that's kind of way these things work.
- 6:14And you know, my deal is hell. Let's get the race over.
- 6:17The race is eased over. Worry about this crap later.
- 6:20And we said, you know, we said when it happened, it's just it's
- 6:23a shame that it's happened right as soon as this chase is
- 6:25happening, right? We all admitted to that.
- 6:27But but it kind of didn't blow over.
- 6:29But it's not dominating the headlines now, and that's a good
- 6:32thing. All right, so here's a good
- 6:35headline from the week. I was actually going to start
- 6:37with this until last night's news with the lawsuit.
- 6:40But seeing that beautiful red Budweiser 8 car that Dale Junior
- 6:48is going to be running with some of his late model stuff and
- 6:51dirty MO media. They did it all kinds of talk
- 6:55about it in interviews on their podcast.
- 6:56They rolled it out. That thing looks slick and I
- 6:59think just for for NASCAR fans who are yearning from
- 7:03yesteryear, even though we're not talking 60s, seventies, 80s,
- 7:06this was more of a a 2000s type thing.
- 7:08But it's just really cool to see that red 8 back and to see it on
- 7:12a track, even if it's not going to be NASCAR now.
- 7:15Now maybe down the road, could it be an Xfinity race?
- 7:18I don't know. For right now, it's in in the
- 7:21late model series that Dale Junior is going to be running.
- 7:23But that was pretty sweet. It was, it was I, I, I like
- 7:27that. You know, the thing of it is,
- 7:29it's two things here, Charlie. It's Earnhardt, right?
- 7:31It's Earnhardt name and it's Budweiser.
- 7:34I mean, come on, man, admit to it.
- 7:36Wiser's owned by Anheuser Busch. Anheuser Busch has been of the
- 7:39longest supporters of our sport, right?
- 7:42I mean, what was that series? I, I, I, I made my way in the
- 7:45Busch Grand National Series, right?
- 7:47Bush, Bush Grand National. So as so as competitor in the
- 7:50sport for 30 years, you know, you look at it as as a little
- 7:54bit different, 'cause you know, like Budweiser been in it so
- 7:56long, it's Junior Johnson and us.
- 8:00You know, you get into the 90s and everything that was going on
- 8:04and everything's a sponsor. And anyhow that through all
- 8:06this, they ended up with, with Earnhardt, they end up with
- 8:08Junior, right? And that was kind of like, you
- 8:11know, that was great. I had Billy Elliot, they had
- 8:13they had all the great Savannah and they ended up with Earnhardt
- 8:16Junior. And it was just, it was a
- 8:18magical time when they when Budweiser went on his car,
- 8:21right? And he came in their sport or he
- 8:22came in the cup. It was when our sport had
- 8:25exploded and it was the most popular at that point as far as
- 8:28fan attendance and all that. And you have so many people that
- 8:32remember that nowadays. So maybe don't follow the sport
- 8:35as much And it's it's just a cool throwback, man.
- 8:37For me personally, you know, I have a a little daring, I guess
- 8:42some daring thoughts about about Anheuser Busch from Budweiser
- 8:46and all that because of the sport they've given us all these
- 8:49years. So, you know, for this, this
- 8:51have to be back. I know I'm rambling on here, but
- 8:54not really giving you a good ass answer, but it's just a cool
- 8:57deal. It's a cool deal.
- 8:59That's a good answer. And by the way, I'm I'm joining
- 9:02everybody from St. Louis, MO, home of Anheuser
- 9:04Busch. I go down to a Cardinals games
- 9:07at Busch Stadium, taking that brewery tour a million times,
- 9:11going to Grant's farm to see the Clydesdales with my kids in the
- 9:15petting zoo and all that. So obviously Anheuser Busch,
- 9:18just such a rich history with Saint Louis, with NASCAR.
- 9:22So it got me thinking though, and I think first of all, you'll
- 9:25you'll be great on this topic, But where do you if we just had
- 9:28to kind of off the top of our heads rank the iconic schemes in
- 9:33NASCAR history? I think the red 8 has to be I'm
- 9:37guessing. I mean, I think for me, it's got
- 9:40to be in at least the top ten. Now we're going to go all the
- 9:43way back here for for me, I mean Earnhardt with the black 3, Jeff
- 9:49Gordon, Rainbow warrior for for me, I'm 42 years old.
- 9:53I would say the the three cars in my lifetime that are most
- 9:56recognizable, Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon and Dale Junior's red
- 10:01Budweiser 8. We're we're you're probably
- 10:04going to go back a little a little more.
- 10:06What about you? Top schemes all time?
- 10:08All all time top scheme, no doubt, 43 STP no doubt just
- 10:13because the longevity of it and the winning record of it right
- 10:18past that. Take the next 5 or 6 and mix
- 10:20them together and throw them up and I don't know who's on top.
- 10:2321 pure later, pure later. Mercury, The Wood Brothers, such
- 10:29an iconic scheme. In fact, they keep throwing back
- 10:32that scheme. Right now they, you know, they
- 10:34do throwback races and that's what The Wood Brothers throw on
- 10:36there. The old 21 red or dark red or
- 10:40whatever the color was and white and Mercury colors, right?
- 10:45Pure later. I don't know, just cool deal
- 10:49past that. Golly, Charlie, you've got to
- 10:54look at well, you I do you got to look at the Budweiser cars,
- 10:58right. You got to look at the junior
- 10:59Johnson cars. You've got to look at man, the
- 11:03Gatorade number 88 iconic because it was one of the IT was
- 11:09a big time sponsor that Sir. It seemed like when it come in
- 11:12their sport, it was one of the, you know, four or five like an
- 11:14STP that came into the sport that really then they dominated
- 11:19some races and they were just out there with that name and
- 11:23Gatorade was pretty young at the time promoting itself and that
- 11:26that was just a cool deal at that time.
- 11:29You go back from that. The one I always loved and I
- 11:32don't know that anybody else knows about this much, is the
- 11:36purple #22 of Fireball Roberts. That was always such a cool car.
- 11:40I think might be in the Hall of Fame now.
- 11:42Weston Kelly, is that Fireball Roberts Purple 22 in your shop,
- 11:49right? You go back past that.
- 11:52We've talked about the Carl Key Cafers or whatever the guy's
- 11:54name was. It had those 303 hundred.
- 11:57There was a number Mercury outboard Mercury on the side of
- 12:00the car, right? He had those.
- 12:01That was the late 50s, right? But you coming on up through, I
- 12:05don't know. To me, you got the 43, right?
- 12:07You've got the three, you've got the 24, all right?
- 12:12You've got those guys and hard pressed to put anybody hit of
- 12:17those 3 in in my opinion. Because we're talking about, I'm
- 12:21not going to say the old days. I'm going to call him the good
- 12:23old days. We had some some news this week
- 12:26as well yesterday with Bobby Allison.
- 12:29So he gets his 85th win. And I'll just read from the
- 12:32NASCAR Twitter account. This is from yesterday.
- 12:35They say today NASCAR announces its recognition of Bobby Allison
- 12:40as the official winner of the 1971 NASCAR Cup Series race at
- 12:45Bowman Gray Stadium. Allison, who drove a Grand
- 12:48American car to victory that day, now counts this win toward
- 12:51his NASCAR Cup total, bringing him to 885 career wins.
- 12:57So cool little picture in graphic.
- 12:59NASCAR went there and they they had a picture with him handing
- 13:02him the certificate and the plaque.
- 13:06And just hearing from a lot of people in the NASCAR world, it
- 13:09seemed like this was something that kind of had ticked off
- 13:12Bobby over the years. And everything that I've seen
- 13:16says that this is now justice being done, that he should have
- 13:19had this win all along. What do you think?
- 13:22Charlie, this is just another, this is another case of NASCAR
- 13:26finally getting something right or getting something right
- 13:28again, right? This can I tell you what it does
- 13:30to me in my thought, my first thought when I heard this, OK,
- 13:34this goes in line with the thought processes of of creating
- 13:38the NASCAR alumni group, right? The alumni group that we've
- 13:41talked about here that I'm a part of and so many of the guys
- 13:44that are part of and NASCAR is promoting and doing all this
- 13:47stuff for the guys that were in the sport, right?
- 13:50It's it's it's you know, a great deal, a great deal.
- 13:53NASCAR is doing this deal with Bobby, giving him the, you know,
- 13:56acts physically doing this before before we lose Bobby,
- 13:59right? Because it has been a bone of
- 14:01contention with this guy contention bone of contention
- 14:04for a number of year, years and years with Bobby and our buddy
- 14:07Rick Houston over at Winston Cup scene or whatever that is seen
- 14:10about. I think, you know, he's been
- 14:11pushing on it. Some other people been pushing
- 14:13for this thing and for them to finally recognize, OK, let's get
- 14:16this right. Let's do this.
- 14:17I, I, you know, it's, it's so those things like, you know, you
- 14:21like, you know, why don't why we didn't do this before?
- 14:24Well, the hell, it doesn't matter.
- 14:25We did it now. So that's what's important,
- 14:27right? And I'm happy for him.
- 14:29I'm really happy for Bob. I know even Donnie's talked
- 14:31about, you know, I've always talked to Donnie more than I
- 14:35have Bobby all through the years for whatever reason.
- 14:36I don't know, but Donnie, Donnie will start spitting and cussing
- 14:39when he talks about his brother getting a dude out of a race,
- 14:42right? It's it's pretty cool.
- 14:44And now they've got that and, you know, the recognition is
- 14:47where it should be, you know, and I don't know, you know, I
- 14:50don't know why all of a sudden we decided to do it, but I'm
- 14:52glad we did. I'm glad those guys did.
- 14:54I mean, it looks like they're it looks like NASCAR are really
- 14:56trying. You know what I mean, Charlie?
- 14:58They're really trying to look after the past or look at the
- 15:01past in sport cause the past of our sport is so significant and
- 15:04everything we do going, I think going forward to learn from it
- 15:08and do from it. And you know, I don't know, I
- 15:11just, I just love it. I love it.
- 15:13Yeah, and and maybe this is going to be a bad analogy, so
- 15:16I'll say this beforehand because I'm not trying in any way to
- 15:19compare Bobby Allison and and Pete Rose and any of the off the
- 15:23field stuff. But I'm just thinking about the
- 15:25fact that let's say Pete Rose gets in the Hall of Fame and I'm
- 15:28not even trying to get into that debate, but if he does, it's
- 15:32going to be after he's passed away.
- 15:35And I think is Bobby Allison 86? I believe I looked that up,
- 15:40right. So, so the fact that you were
- 15:42able to honor him and give him this win while he's still alive,
- 15:49and then you talk about the history of the sport, really to
- 15:51me, that's what this is about. It's about history.
- 15:54It's about storytelling. And like, if you're a young
- 15:58NASCAR fan, because of this story yesterday, a lot of people
- 16:02didn't know about this, right? So it brings Bobby Allison back
- 16:05into the forefront and people can learn about his greatness
- 16:09again and they can remember the past, which I know you love.
- 16:13Charlie, it's like this past weekend, Katie that works, as
- 16:16you know, works in Vail to stem the clinic or orthopedic center.
- 16:19She took three of her working colleagues.
- 16:24So they went to Vegas. All right, she took them and
- 16:27none, none of them had ever been.
- 16:28And they're they were the ones that worked on the well, I'm not
- 16:30supposed to say that they work on a lot of people at this
- 16:33place. All right, lot of lot of
- 16:35athletes get work. So anyhow, they went and share
- 16:38Katie took them and all three of them.
- 16:42Well, they went to Daytona, but it got rained out, so didn't get
- 16:44anything. So anyhow, they went to Vegas.
- 16:46These these girls, according to Katie, had the biggest time they
- 16:50had. But you know, they're like
- 16:52walking around their mouths hanging open.
- 16:54They're walking in pre race, seeing the drivers, right,
- 16:57seeing seeing the people. You can you can kind of see
- 17:00stuff and watch stuff and I don't know, just the whole
- 17:03whatever went on the whole spectacle of being there.
- 17:07These ladies were the whole time with Katie questioning and
- 17:10looking and and figuring and and and mouths hanging open and just
- 17:13really excited. They really got excited over the
- 17:15crew members. It seemed me like the buff crew
- 17:18members, like where they get all these crew members.
- 17:20Well, right. So, but through all this, it was
- 17:24always question and answers and it was the the the ladies were
- 17:27asking Katie questions and it would lead to why does why does
- 17:31this all right? That is, if that's the answer,
- 17:34why then Katie would have to go back and talk about history a
- 17:37little bit and how this got to where they got to right.
- 17:40Then she would talk about something else with history and
- 17:43get this back, get it back to where it is to now.
- 17:45So I, it was, it was really straighten up very strange, but
- 17:49it was telling to me like, you know, here we got Katie, which
- 17:53is due to the sport, like her dad showing 3 ladies the sport
- 17:58and introducing them. And you get back, you get to
- 18:00talking about history and coming up through that, how it connects
- 18:03to today, right? I thought, damn, that's pretty
- 18:06cool. It's kind of what we talked
- 18:07about sometimes on here. But but anyhow, I digress.
- 18:10OK, so Speaking of history, we're getting a lot of comments
- 18:13here as well. So thank you for your comments
- 18:15and please more comments like and subscribe if you haven't
- 18:19subscribed to the channel. Speaking of history on a on a a
- 18:23down note, today is the 20th anniversary of the Hendrick
- 18:29Motorsports plane crash. That was October 24th, 2004.
- 18:35You had a 10 people passing away, a bunch of members,
- 18:39obviously of the Hendrick Motorsports team and Ricky
- 18:43Hendrick. You had John Hendrick, his twin
- 18:45daughters, the the pilots, 10 people passing away.
- 18:52So Rick in in the NASCAR world, obviously, I'm guessing one of
- 18:55those moments where you knew exactly where you were and
- 18:59remembered or, or how you got the news.
- 19:00Do you remember that day? Yeah, I was home watching a
- 19:03race. I was home at in in the living
- 19:06room watching the race when that thing when that thing was
- 19:09transpiring and like everybody else didn't know a thing as race
- 19:12is going on. But you know, when the race was
- 19:14ended, when they when the race ended and they did the they did
- 19:17the victory celebration with 48 car basically they didn't do a
- 19:21victory celebration. I'm like, well, all right, I
- 19:24think that answers that answers what we've been hearing, right?
- 19:28You don't not you don't not do a victory celebration.
- 19:31So that that was kind of telling in itself.
- 19:33And man, I don't know, you know, you, you live long enough,
- 19:37Charlie, you, you, you know, you lose people that you know, you
- 19:41know what I mean, acquaintances, friends, and you know, I don't
- 19:45know, it doesn't, it doesn't ever get easier doing that stuff
- 19:50or watching these folks or seeing it happen to folks.
- 19:52But it, you know, it, it, it's like looking back on that, I
- 19:57mean, the, the, the, the loss that took place, the numbers,
- 20:01just your sheer numbers, right? And all involved with basically
- 20:05one organization like that. And then the organization
- 20:09survived, right? It it, it, it survived and it
- 20:12came through, I mean. You know, a smaller, a smaller
- 20:16type organization, I don't know what it would have done.
- 20:18A large organization, you know, they keep thing just keep on
- 20:21digging, change names. But something like something
- 20:24like in Motorsports with Hendrick and we've been with
- 20:28any, any of the race teams. If it would have happened, it
- 20:31would have been devastated to all of us because we knew all
- 20:34the folks. Most of us knew everybody on
- 20:37that I'll fated plane, man. And you know, it's just like so
- 20:41many things in life when this happens, you don't, Yeah,
- 20:43there's no words. You don't know what the hell to
- 20:44say. All you do is, you know, deal
- 20:47with it. Go on.
- 20:47And it was just, I don't know, Charlie.
- 20:50It's just it's like so many days, man.
- 20:52Just a sad day in there sport, dude.
- 20:54Terribly sad day in there sport. And I remember Randy, man.
- 20:58Randy was, you know, you, you. I can walk up to Randy anywhere.
- 21:02He walked up me one time, Daytona.
- 21:03I didn't really know if I'm at him.
- 21:04And he started talking, I'm like, who is this guy?
- 21:07And then as time went on, I realized there was Randy Dorton.
- 21:09And you know, you can't go up to him and talk to him all the
- 21:11time. It's just just a cool, cool.
- 21:13But anyhow, that's all personal experiences.
- 21:15So that's, that's, that's just with me.
- 21:16But like so many days, sad day, sad day.
- 21:20Yeah, I have a bunch of people commenting on this.
- 21:22Randy Dorton, the team's chief engine builder.
- 21:25Obviously, as you mentioned, another one of the the victims
- 21:29of that crash. OK, let's, let's try to be now,
- 21:32Rick. We'll, we'll spin it positive.
- 21:34OK, we'll spin it positive here. We'll, we'll talk about some
- 21:37actual racing. All right, this past week, Las
- 21:40Vegas, you said your daughter was there.
- 21:42She enjoyed the race. Joey Logano enjoyed the race.
- 21:46What do you think about just the fact that if you go back
- 21:49essentially one week, Joey Logano is leaving the track and
- 21:54he thinks he's not even in the playoffs at all.
- 21:56He's out, He's not into the round of eight.
- 22:00And then you have the news with Alex Bowman.
- 22:03That happens later that night on a Sunday.
- 22:05And then one week later, Joey Logano from out of the playoffs
- 22:09is now already into Phoenix in the final four.
- 22:13Crazy story. That's crazy dude.
- 22:17Did you hear about Bowman to change?
- 22:18Not change the subject, but sorted.
- 22:20Did you hear about Bowman's got mad through his phone in the
- 22:22pool? Did you hear that through the?
- 22:24Phone in the pool and I didn't know this dude evidently the
- 22:27phone dialed 911 because of the impact right and I didn't I
- 22:31didn't know phones did that I knew the OnStar and your cars
- 22:34would do that with impact. I didn't know phone would do
- 22:36that but anyhow you know I we're all thinking the same thing how
- 22:40in the hell is this guy he's not even in the championship right
- 22:43he's not in the championship when they leave the racetrack in
- 22:46the next week he's going to be in the final four.
- 22:49How does this happen? How in the hell does this
- 22:52happen? Well, you know what, man?
- 22:54We were light, our car was lighted, and that's just the way
- 22:57it is. That's just the way it works.
- 23:01So I guess, I guess the argument is and I I have fun with all of
- 23:05this. And by the way, thank you.
- 23:07Matthew Brown gave us a nice little super thanks.
- 23:09He's still talking about the the lawsuit.
- 23:11But every time things like this happen, people question the
- 23:17format. And I always say, I think
- 23:19questioning the format is good. I think the healthy debate,
- 23:24whether it's on this podcast, whether you're sitting at a bar
- 23:27stool at a bar talking sports. It is kind of interesting that
- 23:31Joey Logano for this year, it hasn't been a great season for
- 23:35him. You think he's out and now
- 23:37there's a very good chance. I mean, hell, at this point he's
- 23:41the favorite because he's the only one that's in, right?
- 23:45And so everybody's talking about the format again.
- 23:48I know it's not the old days, it's not perfect, but for
- 23:52excitement and storylines and to pick up the casual racing or
- 23:56sports fan, I think it's fantastic.
- 23:59Yeah, it is. And I don't.
- 24:02Excuse me, Charlie. Excuse me, folks.
- 24:04I, you know, man, everybody looks at Rick maths and thinks
- 24:08old school, right? And old school, you know, and I,
- 24:11I am about old school and a lot of things.
- 24:13But I'm telling you, dude, I just don't know.
- 24:16In today's world, in today's world where we've got a
- 24:20multitude of media things available to us, we sit in our
- 24:23couch, we sit down on the couch. We got, we got more choices than
- 24:27we've ever had in our lives. I mean, it used to be, dude,
- 24:29back before the 2000s, I mean, even the 90s when we exploded,
- 24:33you sit down on the couch, right?
- 24:34And you had your TV, that's what you watch whatever's on TV.
- 24:38And most of them at those point at that time was still coming
- 24:41off the 35 inch or 25 inch console TV starting to get to
- 24:45the big screen, right? And so your, your choices are
- 24:48very limited and, and, and, and racing was your one of your
- 24:52passions and that's what you loved.
- 24:53And then what happened? We all get older, the world
- 24:56changes, the tensions, the attention span of everybody,
- 25:00instead of being five hours for race is now 5 minutes till you
- 25:04get up and go do something else. And you know, the, that, that's
- 25:08what's happened. It, it's, it's, it's a culture
- 25:10of our, of our country or our world.
- 25:13And that's what that's what's created this, this monster that
- 25:17they call the Chase, right? If we didn't have the Chase
- 25:20right now, dude, there'd be some old school guys who would just
- 25:23love it. But I'm afraid our numbers would
- 25:26be would tank. You know, I'm just going to be
- 25:28frank. Our numbers, I'm going all
- 25:30right, here it is. Here it is the numbers.
- 25:33If we didn't have the Chase right now in our world and our
- 25:36environment that we're living in, the numbers would absolutely
- 25:39tank in NASCAR. No way we would have good
- 25:42numbers the way we're staying now.
- 25:43No way we would be signing these new contracts.
- 25:47No way with all these he's wanting to becoming their sport.
- 25:51It's just I just don't, I don't think it's possible.
- 25:53And I'm I'm, I'm as old school as they get guys, right?
- 25:56And I'll be the first one to criticize anything I don't like.
- 25:59But you've got to be realistic about where you were.
- 26:02The glory is. Yeah.
- 26:03And I was there during the glory years and they were great.
- 26:06But you know, you had 150,000 people watch this because he
- 26:09didn't have anything else to do other than cut your 35 inch TVTV
- 26:13on and watch it. And we're it's, it's not that
- 26:16way in 2024, right? So the criticisms of the chase,
- 26:20I get it. Believe me, I understand with
- 26:22all the old school people, I get it.
- 26:24I I get it. But without this chase, I think
- 26:28we're in trouble. Maybe not in trouble, but we
- 26:30don't have the numbers we have. So case closed on that for me
- 26:34dude. So what did you think of the
- 26:37race? You have some fuel strategy
- 26:39there. Logano said after the race that
- 26:41he probably had a top five car, Obviously not the best car.
- 26:44Christopher Bell had the best car.
- 26:47And, and look, Christopher Bell is in a really good position now
- 26:50to advance also. But, but watching him do his
- 26:54interviews at the end there, it was like he finished in last
- 26:57place, you know, and he had a, he had a great day, a great run,
- 27:01But it just shows you how much obviously winning matters when
- 27:05you get to the playoffs. I don't know.
- 27:07I, I kind of like the strategy play.
- 27:09I, I like the fact that you can take those risks And it, look,
- 27:12you have a couple cautions. It probably doesn't work out,
- 27:14but it clearly worked out. And Joey Logano is a veteran
- 27:18driver and he has a veteran team, and they made the right
- 27:21call and it worked. Yeah, I mean, with Christopher,
- 27:24I know I picked up on what you talked about Christopher, it
- 27:26seemed like his interviews like he finished last and all that
- 27:30is, is an experience in time as he as he races more and he's in
- 27:34these, these situations present themselves to him more often.
- 27:38He will, he will those types of interviews will be softened.
- 27:43OK, let's put it that way. I mean, all drivers go through
- 27:47that and I don't know, man, it's just like you dominate and we
- 27:52saw, we've seen that a lot this year.
- 27:53We've seen it a lot the last few years.
- 27:55Guys just dominating the race and to get down to the end, they
- 27:57don't win, right. And you know, Bill has to
- 28:00understand that and he and he will.
- 28:02But you know, I, I don't know, man, if I, if I was, if I was
- 28:06sitting on the pit box right now at these race tracks making
- 28:11these calls, Lord of mercy, I would beat myself up all well, I
- 28:15wouldn't because of my mindset. To hell with it.
- 28:17You go on, you put it behind you.
- 28:18But it's just, it's just it's gut wrenching what these guys
- 28:22do, man, at these race tracks trying to figure this deal out.
- 28:24It's it's always damn if you do, damned if you don't, right?
- 28:28And it's only going to war. Here's the problem.
- 28:30When you make all these guys make these decisions during the
- 28:33race, and we're going to, we're going to make this happen and
- 28:35we're going to Christopher Bell, we're going to win this race.
- 28:37We got everybody done. We've done everything right.
- 28:39That's all down the strategy, right, And it gets down the end
- 28:42of the race, Charlie, when they drop a trek or fly.
- 28:44What have we got? One winner?
- 28:47We only got one guy that was right.
- 28:49Only one guy made the right call.
- 28:52Everybody else is walking out there, kick themselves in the
- 28:54ass because, you know, we we made the wrong call today,
- 28:57right? That's just the way.
- 28:58That's another thing that's neat about our sport.
- 29:00Oh, my foot's itching. Your foot ever itching.
- 29:03You know, I've got a good deal, man.
- 29:05I've never had stinky feet. I've got good teeth and stinky
- 29:08feet, but I lose my hair. But other than that, I'm good.
- 29:11But but honestly, you know that that that's you know, if you're
- 29:15a football team, if you win, man, at least you got what 40
- 29:18people, 50 players or whatever is real happy.
- 29:20And you know, because forty of them get to do it was one team,
- 29:24but it's one team with NASCAR. But it's one driver, dude and
- 29:27one crew chief and one engineer. They you know, they make the
- 29:29call and only one gets to only one gets to accept or reap the
- 29:34benefits of making the right call that day.
- 29:35And everybody else is mad and going home figuring about the
- 29:38next week. So.
- 29:41I love it. All right, everybody get your
- 29:42questions in for Rick. We'll go another 20 minutes or
- 29:45so here. How about just the fact a lot of
- 29:48discussion the last couple years, if you go back to the to
- 29:51the first year of the Next Gen. car when Joey Logano won.
- 29:54But a lot of the narrative has been that Joey Logano, he's a
- 29:57he's a big game driver, he's a big race driver, he's a playoff
- 30:02driver and he's talked about that a lot.
- 30:03Now I'm just wondering you were in those cars.
- 30:07I think sometimes with athletes, it's not so much that that the
- 30:12great athletes raise their game in the playoffs.
- 30:16It's sometimes that that other athletes shrink a bit, right?
- 30:21Like they feel the pressure, they get a little nervous.
- 30:24And so I'm asking you, could you feel that difference when you
- 30:27were racing? Could you feel the difference in
- 30:30intensity? Were you more nervous, let's say
- 30:32for a Cup race than a Bush race? Or when it was the Daytona 500,
- 30:35when it was the crown jewel? Did you feel more nervous?
- 30:39Do you think that affected your performance?
- 30:42Is that affect guys? Performance.
- 30:43I did. I did.
- 30:44I didn't. I didn't.
- 30:45What I mean by that, before the race, Charlie, you would feel
- 30:48all those, all those emotions you're talking about.
- 30:50Yeah. A driver feels every single one
- 30:52of them. You go through.
- 30:53You can't, you can't help but do that, right.
- 30:55Especially nowadays with the media scrutiny and the podcast
- 30:59scrutiny on every, every move that's made to these guys.
- 31:02And you know, they have to live with that, But here was here was
- 31:04my deal and I cannot speak for everybody else, but here was my
- 31:08deal. When they dropped the green
- 31:10flag, every bit of that shit in my mind went away.
- 31:14Dude, it, it really did. When they dropped the green
- 31:17flag, it's like a, to me, it was like my safe haven.
- 31:20It was a place I went when they drop a green flag that never
- 31:24changed from the time I was 15 years old, the first time in a
- 31:28race car. The my mindset and what my
- 31:31thoughts were and everything going on, it was one thing and
- 31:35you know, and that was just how do you get to the checkered flag
- 31:38the quickest? How do you beat this guy?
- 31:40How do you outrun this guy, right lap after lap?
- 31:42What changes do we make on pit stops?
- 31:44What's going on? None of the other stuff ever
- 31:46entered my mind during these races.
- 31:47I don't know why, you know, and I can't say that other guys are
- 31:51that way. I think maybe preparations.
- 31:53So maybe some preparations for the event and then, you know, we
- 31:57hear them talk about strategy for the race.
- 31:59Now we hear, we hear, you know, the, the, the what the crew
- 32:02chief and the driver and the team's talking about how they
- 32:04showing the strategize for that race that day.
- 32:06And they they stay on that page and they do that right.
- 32:09But there there's more of that type of stuff that goes on than
- 32:12it then then went on in my day, right, You know, wasn't really a
- 32:16whole lot of strategy strategizing.
- 32:18The biggest thing that would go on with the punch battles and
- 32:20our day was that the guys would try to outdo the other guys.
- 32:23They try to snooker them. They try to, what am I trying to
- 32:27say? They try to do mind games,
- 32:29right? Get on there, just do mind games
- 32:31on guys. And it did work with some of
- 32:32these people right before was they went, they went to Atlanta
- 32:36and I forget who it was Earnhardt and Mark and two or
- 32:39three other ones. And he went to Atlanta for a
- 32:41test and they've been testing there two or three day or
- 32:44whatever. They've been tested a good bit.
- 32:46Mark Head and then Earnhardt shows up, unloads, goes out
- 32:49there, runs about 5 or 610 laps faster than anybody's ever run,
- 32:55comes in and loads it up and takes the car, right.
- 32:58And from that test, from that test, they get a car.
- 33:05A Mark gets a car from, I believe I'm right about this,
- 33:10Robert Yates, right? He gets a Robert because they,
- 33:13because Earnhardt came in there. It was so much faster than what
- 33:16they had, right? They get a car, they go borrow a
- 33:19car from Robert Yates, which is a fast race car and come back.
- 33:22And then of course it doesn't work out.
- 33:25But Earnhardt children's, they come in there, put 4 soft tires
- 33:28on the car had real soft tires, ran, ran fast as practice laps
- 33:35loaded up and went home. And from that it forced the six
- 33:38team or whatever to go get a car from another race team to run
- 33:43the race, to come back and run the race with, right?
- 33:45I mean, that was one of the that was one of the best.
- 33:48What's the word? I'm looking for the phrase, you
- 33:50know, that man, they who do them, they who do bad, they who
- 33:54do them bad. But that deal, right.
- 33:56And I think I've got my facts right on the on the racetrack
- 33:59and and Mark and Earnhardt, I'm pretty sure in the Yates car.
- 34:02I'm pretty sure I'm right about that.
- 34:04But those are the kind of things that would go on.
- 34:06And then, you know, we're here today and now you're talking
- 34:09about stepping it up and and for whatever reasons, you know, when
- 34:12the guy knows on right, he's on. I mean, you know, and I don't
- 34:16necessarily know that it's playoffs.
- 34:18It's just the way the things work out that day.
- 34:20But he is a very, very smart race car driver, OK?
- 34:25And but he wasn't smart enough, you know, they weren't good
- 34:27enough and they weren't smart enough to step it up to be in
- 34:31the final eight, right, until somebody else had misfortune.
- 34:36OK. I mean, if the other car had to
- 34:38have been a couple pounds light, he wouldn't be in the thing.
- 34:40He wouldn't be talking about the guy who would be in great
- 34:41stepping it up. But, you know, I ain't so sure
- 34:44to back to your question, Charlie, I'm not so sure that
- 34:47what happens is the pressure of the situation makes you do
- 34:51things wrong more than more than the pressure makes you do things
- 34:56right. I really, truly think that's
- 34:58what I see more than anything. He's he's the pressure just kind
- 35:02of screws you up instead of helping you, right.
- 35:04So we'll see. All right, let's, let's take a
- 35:07look at the the standings here. So Logano is already in the
- 35:12Phoenix. You have Christopher Bell in
- 35:14second, Kyle Larson and William Byron.
- 35:17So 2 Hendrick guys 3-4. And then on the bubble, Denny
- 35:21Hamlin, Tyler Reddick, Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott right now,
- 35:26who's your four or anybody, anybody that's outside looking
- 35:30in right now that you think has a really good shot to to get to
- 35:33Phoenix? No, I don't know.
- 35:38I will say if Blaney gets in hint Blaney or or I will make
- 35:43this prediction, this only prediction I'll make so far if
- 35:45Blaney gets in, Blaney and or Logano will win the
- 35:50championship. OK, I will say that other than
- 35:53that I can't you know if the 9 if the 9 car can, you know, keep
- 36:00her crap together. I mean, the nine car was running
- 36:03very, very good at Vegas band, right and got taken out with the
- 36:0719 and he wasn't ready. Yeah, they they all got together
- 36:10and and wrecked and I'm telling you that car was doing well.
- 36:14I just don't think you at this point of season, I don't think
- 36:18you can count. Nobody talks about it much, but
- 36:20I just you know, I don't know, I guess he's my dark horse.
- 36:22I guess Chase Elliott. Chase Elliott right now is my
- 36:25dark horse for this and I I got reasons for that.
- 36:28But you know, might be wrong about all that.
- 36:30We'll see how it happens. I I don't know, of course, dude,
- 36:34how you going to how you not going to say the five cars going
- 36:36to win it not going to win it, right.
- 36:38I mean, he kicks butt every frigging week.
- 36:40He he out there doing his out. He's out there doing his thing.
- 36:43So could be anybody, man. But I'm telling you right now,
- 36:46the two I'm I'm going to say win it if they get in the in the in
- 36:49the last race. So, well, we got two more races,
- 36:52Charlie, to get to Phoenix. Homestead and then Martinsville.
- 36:56OK. All right.
- 36:57Well, we leave Homestead, I'll give you more predictions and
- 37:02then when we leave Martinsville, I really get these predictions.
- 37:06So it sounds like, do you think though that Penske, because you
- 37:10mentioned Logano's already in Blaney won it last year, Logano
- 37:13won it the year before. We all know it all comes down to
- 37:16Phoenix. You just feel like Penske has
- 37:18some type of advantage or, or knowledge with the setup at
- 37:21Phoenix that gives them that tremendous advantage.
- 37:24Because you Remember, Remember last year, obviously what Ross
- 37:27Chastain won the race. But remember at the end of that
- 37:30race, everybody thought the, the first car off Pit Rd. was going
- 37:34to win and it was Larson, right? And Blaney still was able to
- 37:39pass him. So do you feel like Penske just
- 37:42has that? They have that secret info.
- 37:45They they just got it. Until, until somebody outruns
- 37:48Penske at Phoenix. That's that's the way I'm going
- 37:51to go every year. I'll do that in March, I'll do
- 37:53it in September. I'll say it, you know, in
- 37:55December, whenever and when we go to Phoenix and and other
- 37:59teams have a set up finally that outruns the Penske set up at
- 38:03that racetrack, then you know, and here's the other thing,
- 38:06Charlie, and the days in the back on days I wouldn't have
- 38:09said that because you're changed, the cars changed, the
- 38:12tire constructions changed. You know, every time he'd make a
- 38:14change with rules, you know, it would throw out a setup if
- 38:17somebody had it some racetrack with that's just the way it was
- 38:20it. That's the way it is air sport.
- 38:21But now with this car, you know, you come back to the same car
- 38:24every time, the tires the same basically every time.
- 38:27So you can more confidently save because this team ran this way
- 38:31at this track a year ago. It's going to run this way
- 38:33again. You can you say that with more
- 38:35confidence there than you ever could in the past just because
- 38:38nothing changes. And that's the reason I, I go
- 38:40with the Penske deal now, not saying that another team can't
- 38:44figure it out and hit on something that makes it work.
- 38:47And you can bet your ass on one thing, Charlie.
- 38:49All these teams are looking at that right now.
- 38:51They're all these guys, these eight, right?
- 38:54These eight, they are looking at, at Phoenix.
- 38:56They are, they're, they, I guarantee you they're in there
- 38:59running their, their simulators are doing their stuff.
- 39:01You know, they're doing the second poster.
- 39:03They still do those things, right?
- 39:05They're running simulated laps at Phoenix right now as we
- 39:07speak. They're doing that because they
- 39:09know that's the race that wins the championship.
- 39:11And they're, they're working their ass off on that.
- 39:13And somebody could hit on something, right?
- 39:15And if they go down there and one of those other teams hits on
- 39:18something, then yeah, they got a shot at it.
- 39:22Get your questions and comments in good time, Says we all forget
- 39:25about Bell Derby driver 74, says Matt Kenseth is the last real
- 39:32champion. That's his take.
- 39:34We did have a question for you back here.
- 39:36When was your last year racing? 02 OK.
- 39:40So 2002, so this gentleman here, Frank T92 says, hey Rick, what
- 39:45was the best opportunity that you got from 1999 on to hop in a
- 39:49car and potentially win races? The I was just telling Sharon
- 39:54about this. Somehow I know this come up
- 39:57month ago, one of the races that I know that got away from me,
- 40:03one of the best race cars I ever had other than Indy.
- 40:08Other than Indy, right? Before the loss cylinder anyhow
- 40:13Texas with Kale Yarborough, the 98 car Texas motor speed we we
- 40:19had I guess, I guess the fat back was my crew chief at that
- 40:22point. We hit on something right.
- 40:25We hit on a little trend that evidently other teams that had
- 40:28known about for a while and we hit on it in practice and it was
- 40:32a spring deals basically going through stiffer springs, man,
- 40:35they started that right and I had not qualified that well,
- 40:37maybe 15th to 20th or 20th maybe.
- 40:40I'm not sure where we were about mid pack.
- 40:43And I knew in practice we kept changing this car and doing the
- 40:45same thing to it. Man, it'd get better and better
- 40:47and better and better. I'm like, my God, something's
- 40:50wrong. I can't believe this.
- 40:51They started the race and I'm like you, you know, I'd run 5 or
- 40:5610 laps or whatever. I'm like man, oh man, oh man.
- 40:59It's like taking your breath away.
- 41:00It's almost like you just hold the thing wide open.
- 41:02All we run the racer and those things had strong motors, Kales.
- 41:06So to Bob Fischer, Tony Cola, those engine guys, they had the
- 41:10best motors, man. But that thing would just haul
- 41:15ass. Charlie, I'm telling you, I was
- 41:17hauling ass. All I was doing was was just
- 41:20watching and watching and trying to figure out how to stay out of
- 41:24other people's stuff as I'd catch a car passing, catch a car
- 41:28passing, right and just take my time.
- 41:30I knew, you know, just take your time, dude.
- 41:33Take your time, you know don't get in any mess, don't miss
- 41:36shifts today, don't do anything wrong.
- 41:38Pit Rd. you going to win this race by a lap right and before I
- 41:43could get there, before I could get there, I'll never forget
- 41:46going down in one and two. I look up and there's just go
- 41:49down sideways, right. Something had happened.
- 41:51I don't know what the deal was, who wrecked, how wrecked, who
- 41:54wrecked who or what not. Then I'll just go down the
- 41:56sideways and I got caught up in the wreck and tore the race car
- 41:59up. So to answer car guys, car guys
- 42:05question that was it same deal with Poconos or we had the same
- 42:08deal with Poconos, that same car man, I felt like we had a shot
- 42:12at a real shot up there and we lost the distributor,
- 42:14distributor broke. So but anyhow.
- 42:17OK, so and Frank T92 has another question.
- 42:21He says the 1998 Daytona 500 as Dale Earnhardt and the field are
- 42:25closing in on you at the end of the race.
- 42:27What are you thinking? What is your team telling you?
- 42:29So give people the scenario there, because I'm.
- 42:31Not yeah, I'm madder in hell because we were with that group.
- 42:34We're actually running with that group.
- 42:36We had a pit stop and we were out there running with the route
- 42:40and the fragging wheel came loose, Charlie, we didn't get it
- 42:43tight or what not whatever. I had to come down pit Rd. and
- 42:49tighten tighten the lug nuts up. I don't know if we change tires
- 42:52or not, but anyhow, we got the wheels tight.
- 42:53I went back out when I go back out on the racetrack course I'm
- 42:56in front of I'm in front of the pack that this pack that I was
- 42:59just with. I'm now in front of getting
- 43:02ready to get lapped, getting ready to get rundown and I know
- 43:06all this and they I I don't remember.
- 43:11I I remember who was in the pack and I remember it was Bobby and
- 43:15and Dale and I think it Mayfield guy and some couple of those.
- 43:20So I look in the mirror and I see what's happening and dude, I
- 43:23just come down the back straight away, you know, come to take the
- 43:26one to go. And you know, I I really, I just
- 43:32moved inside and and give them inside lane.
- 43:35Tell you a story that never got out.
- 43:39We actually, anyhow, we go into 3 and I'm on the bottom lane and
- 43:43Dale goes by and he wins the race.
- 43:45The caution comes out with one to go.
- 43:46I forget what happened, but basically he was leading with
- 43:49one to go and that that got him to win that race was over.
- 43:54They come on the radio. They said, Rick, yeah, you got
- 43:57to go to the red truck. I said what?
- 43:59I said they want you and Richard or you and Butch.
- 44:02Butch Bach was owner go to the red truck.
- 44:04I'm like, all right, I'm like, what the hell?
- 44:07They want me in the red truck Ford.
- 44:08I go up in the red truck and there's Mike Kelton and there's
- 44:10Gary Nelson and Gary's about half pissy at me, man.
- 44:13Just you know what I mean? I'm like, what's going on?
- 44:15He said, Rick, he said that last lap of that race, were you
- 44:20intentionally trying to help Earnhardt?
- 44:21And I said, what do you mean intentionally trying to help
- 44:23him? Well, the moves you made, it was
- 44:25obvious that you you were trying to help Earnhardt win that race.
- 44:29I said, Gary, what the hell are you talking about?
- 44:31No trying to help anybody win the race.
- 44:33I held my life. I held my line.
- 44:36Well, why did you pull over and let the let them all go?
- 44:40I said, dude, I was with this pack leading.
- 44:44I was with this leading pack, right?
- 44:47Just a few laps before this, the caution comes.
- 44:49I mean, my wheel comes loose. I got to tighten it up.
- 44:51I go back on the track and now they caught me the last lap, put
- 44:54me a lap down. What the hell are you talking
- 44:56about? Well, it's obvious.
- 44:57You try, you try to help him in and blah, blah, blah.
- 45:01At this point I'm starting to get pissed off at Gary.
- 45:04I'm like, what do you what the Hell's the matter with you,
- 45:05dude? You know what I mean?
- 45:07We're going to get in a fight. Are you going to get your ass
- 45:09whipped right here in this truck today?
- 45:11You keep this up because I'm mad anyhow, right?
- 45:14I'm already bad and and I remember saying I said here's
- 45:19Butch. I said I asked him what he's
- 45:20told me. He said don't let them guys.
- 45:22You try to run it hard, run it hard, which he didn't have to
- 45:24tell me that that's what I'm going to do anyhow, right.
- 45:27So anyhow, Gary has a tape somehow or another.
- 45:32He has a tape or something video, and it's ATV in the red
- 45:35truck. He says, all right, you're
- 45:36telling me you want to turn 3, Rick, you're going into turn 3.
- 45:40Earnhardt's coming up on you, and then he's going by you.
- 45:43You're going to tell me that you stayed down in the white line
- 45:46all through three, the floor four, and not moved up to block
- 45:49anybody. I said, yeah, that's what I'm
- 45:52telling you, right? He puts the videotape in, right?
- 45:56It shows me going through 3 or 4 right on the frigging white
- 45:59line, not moving up, not blocking anybody, right?
- 46:03And we come back and it comes back to the end of the tape or
- 46:07the checkered flag. And I didn't, I didn't do
- 46:08anything wrong. Nothing wrong.
- 46:10Mike Hilton says, I think that's the end of this discussion,
- 46:14guys. We'll see y'all next week,
- 46:16right? And I think Mike's pretty pissed
- 46:19off at Gary at that point too. He's not sure what's going on.
- 46:22But I had a couple other choice for choice words for Gary Nelson
- 46:26right as I was reading. But I I never did figure that
- 46:29out, dude, right. I mean, I never had any problems
- 46:32with Gary Nelson. Never never had a problem with
- 46:34him before that, never had a problem with him after that.
- 46:36But the problem was he was, he was about 1/2 a half a Scotia
- 46:42getting his ass whipped or getting one good shot on the
- 46:44side. He did because I'd had enough
- 46:46that day, right? And it was ridiculous,
- 46:48absolutely ridiculous. So I don't know.
- 46:50I don't know what the hell the deal was.
- 46:51I don't he didn't want her hard to win or thought I was doing
- 46:54something wrong, but I didn't. So it was good for me, good for
- 46:56me. Yeah, as Grand Marquis says,
- 46:59that's a great story and it is. OK, let's let's end on this.
- 47:02I have a meeting, so we got to get out a little bit earlier.
- 47:05I know you're a baseball fan. You got the Braves hat on.
- 47:07I know you're mad that the Braves aren't in it, but do you
- 47:10like big market, big paycheck baseball?
- 47:13Do you like, I mean, it's iconic teams, Yankees, Dodgers.
- 47:17Do you like it? Do you have a prediction?
- 47:20Charlie, we got to give the devil's due at least once a
- 47:23decade, right? All the procrastinators.
- 47:27Oh, hell. What that What was that word?
- 47:29Look that word up, everybody. Procrastinators.
- 47:31Prognosticators. Yeah.
- 47:33Anyhow, we got to give the devil's due once a decade.
- 47:36You know, they all the baseball gods, They all, all the gods
- 47:40talk about the big market people.
- 47:42They got to have the Dodgers. They got to have the Yankees.
- 47:44We don't want the Cardinals. We don't want the Braves.
- 47:47We want Dodgers and Yankees. And sometimes you can throw in
- 47:50the Red Sox, right? Yeah.
- 47:51Throw them in every now and then.
- 47:53You get the Dodgers and the Yankees together.
- 47:56You got this whole group of elite media across the country
- 48:00that just loves this, right. So I'll give them that once a
- 48:03decade. I ain't going to watch it.
- 48:04I'm not going to watch that crap every year.
- 48:06No, you know, I'm not going to watch the Dodgers and the
- 48:08Yankees every year playing in the World Series.
- 48:10No, but I will give it to them right now.
- 48:12And they, they get all kinds of publicity.
- 48:14They, you know, they're the highest spenders in our leagues
- 48:17and all that. So that's good.
- 48:18We'll we'll give a bet. They deserve this one for the
- 48:20decade. But no more, Charlie.
- 48:22No more. OK, I'll just give my
- 48:25prediction, but it's more what I want.
- 48:27See, it's weird because the Yankees won so much when I was
- 48:30growing up. I got tired of them, but now it
- 48:33is kind of like they haven't won one in 15 years, which is a long
- 48:36time. So I wouldn't be bothered if the
- 48:37Yankees won the World Series. But for me, being a guy who
- 48:42covered the Cardinals, Tommy Edmond, I'm a big fan of Tommy
- 48:45Edmond. Jack Flaherty was also a
- 48:47Cardinal. Now the Yankees have Luke
- 48:49Weaver, but Tommy Edmonds, a fantastic guy, great guy.
- 48:53He was NLCSMVP so I'm going to say Dodgers in seven because I
- 48:57want Tommy Edmond to get a ring. Yeah, I'll go.
- 49:01I'll go that way just because of Freddie.
- 49:04Freddie Freeman, man, he's our guy.
- 49:06He was Atlanta Braves for years, you know.
- 49:08So we're going to pull for Freddie just because he was a
- 49:11Brave and now he's on the Dodgers and they're in the
- 49:15National League and I'm going to tell you the truth, I don't like
- 49:19either one of them. Well, I do.
- 49:20I don't hate them. I just don't.
- 49:23They don't give me any spirit, Charlie.
- 49:25They don't give me any vibes, man.
- 49:27You give me you give me the Cardinals when they're winning,
- 49:31right? You give me the Cubs when
- 49:33they're winning, man, for some reason.
- 49:36And I was a Yankees fan growing up, I'd get the paper and open
- 49:38up the newspaper and look at the standings and see where the
- 49:40Yankees were were winning or what their deal was when I was a
- 49:44little boy. And that's what was so weird.
- 49:46And and the Dodgers deal. You know, the, the guy, the,
- 49:49the, the big thing for me and the Dodgers has got who's that
- 49:51guy used to his eyes up. He do like that when he threw
- 49:55the pitch. Remember that guy?
- 49:57He was well, Fernando. Yeah, that's it.
- 50:00He just. Passed away Fernando Valenzuela
- 50:02just. Died.
- 50:04OK, I'm sorry to hear that. I tell you what brought that up,
- 50:07Charlie. I saw a picture of him the other
- 50:08day or something. I saw a picture of him with his
- 50:11eyes up. But I'm like, gosh, I forgot
- 50:13about that dude. What?
- 50:13What? What the deal is so.
- 50:15Well, OK. All right.
- 50:16He just passed. It was either yesterday or the
- 50:18day before the news cycles. I think it was the last couple
- 50:21days. OK, well, he it was such a cool
- 50:24deal to watch him, man, it's such a cool deal.
- 50:26But I will say this, Yankees and Yankees and and Dodgers are good
- 50:30for baseball. Those two teams playing for the
- 50:32World Series. It's it's good for the sport,
- 50:34right? It's just like Earnhardt.
- 50:36Earnhardt wins the race. It was good for our sport.
- 50:38What's the same way in baseball, those teams?
- 50:40So I I'll give, I'll give them credit for that, Charlie.
- 50:44I agree. I like it about once every 10
- 50:46years. That makes sense.
- 50:48And then we'll do it again in 2034.
- 50:50Let's end on this though, because Katie Mass did weigh in
- 50:53and she said I'm going to add that word to the rictionary.
- 50:56I think she was talking about the prognostication word.
- 51:00Yeah, they're the thing about family has a dictionary
- 51:03rictionary. Yeah, they do have that.
- 51:06Dude, when you're trying to think of something, you throw it
- 51:08out there. You know you've heard that word
- 51:10before, but you're not smart enough to get it all put
- 51:12together. So you just just throw it out
- 51:13there. People understand what you're
- 51:15saying for sure. Exactly.
- 51:16Right. Just look at politics.
- 51:18Just look at politics. We know what the hell they're
- 51:21saying. No, we don't have a clue what
- 51:22they're saying about. Let's not go down that road, OK,
- 51:25Charles? Next.
- 51:27Show we'll do what we'll do, maybe after the election.
- 51:30Yeah, that'll be fun. That'll be fun.
- 51:32We gots to go. Rick, thank you so much.
- 51:35That was great. We covered a ton of topics.
- 51:38Thanks for all the comments and questions.
- 51:39Everybody give us a like give us a subscribe if you haven't.
- 51:43And we'll be back next week to Breakdown Homestead.
- 51:46It'll be fun, Rick. Thanks man.
- 51:48We'll see you. Alright guys, Toodaloo.
- 51:51And stream.
