- 0:00Okay, hi, how's it going? Hey, it's me. I'm not
- 0:03standing over over there. I'm sitting right here
- 0:06I posted yesterday because of you know the whole
- 0:09um, you know dropping lots of bombs on Iran thing
- 0:13that that we're doing now and It kind of derailed
- 0:18my whole ass plan for the week. We're trying
- 0:20something new today. This is an experiment You're
- 0:23here with me together in this moment to see how
- 0:26this goes. I'm just gonna like read some of the
- 0:29like half baked stuff from the draft that I had
- 0:32to throw away because of the aforementioned bombs.
- 0:36But I didn't want to just like not talk about
- 0:38some of this stuff because there's some there's
- 0:39some like good stuff in here. Well, there's some
- 0:42good stuff in here. There's also some like crazy
- 0:44shit. But I'm just going to go through it and
- 0:46just give some quick thoughts off the dome. This
- 0:48is going to be very casual, business casual,
- 0:51though. So wear your wear your formal wear. So
- 0:54I'm going to skip over what was going to be the
- 0:56main story. I had I had so much written. was
- 0:59like here is the current state of play of like
- 1:01everyone who's involved in this potential war
- 1:03slash proxy war and Whoops, so let's just kind
- 1:07of like let's talk about anything else because
- 1:09that's all I've been steeping in since it happened
- 1:11Understandably, I think but I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 1:14put my brain on something else for a bit. Here
- 1:16we go A really wonderful first topic here medical
- 1:19assisted death. So over over in England and Wales
- 1:24They're dying Jesus, this is how unprepared I
- 1:29am. So people die, and sometimes people get sick
- 1:31and then die. And there's an issue where your
- 1:34quality of life is like really, really bad while
- 1:36you're sick and dying. And so some people are
- 1:39like, hey, you know what? I'd rather just be
- 1:42dead. It would be considered mercy by some. It
- 1:45would be considered horrific by others. But I
- 1:48feel like it's a deeply personal choice. And
- 1:50I feel like I have no business in telling somebody
- 1:52else whether or not what they should do with
- 1:55that. But still doctor assisted suicide is a
- 1:59touchy issue especially in part because doctors
- 2:02wear an oath to do no harm and so like What happens
- 2:06there, but also also sometimes? putting them
- 2:09out of their misery is the right thing. It does
- 2:11less harm. It's a whole debate, but in England
- 2:14and Wales there has finally been some movement
- 2:16forward where lawmakers have actually signaled
- 2:19support and pushed some legislation forward to
- 2:22allow doctor assisted suicide or terminally ill
- 2:26patients specifically. It passed the House of
- 2:29Commons, I believe, and it's now going to go
- 2:31to the House of Lords. If you're not a Brit boy,
- 2:36you're not an Englander, You know, if you're
- 2:40not united under the kingdom, they've got sort
- 2:43of how like we, like in the States, we've got
- 2:45two houses of Congress, we've got the House and
- 2:47the Senate, like a lower and a higher house.
- 2:49In London land, right, in the Britopia, they've
- 2:54got a House of Commons for the rabble rousers,
- 2:59and then a House of Lords. And my understanding
- 3:01is that to be a member of the House of Lords,
- 3:05You have to have a cane. Maybe a top hat. But
- 3:08yeah, they're unelected. Cool. But also, like,
- 3:12largely expected that this is gonna pass. I'm
- 3:14gonna look up what countries already have doctor
- 3:17-assisted suicide as a thing. Okay, it is...
- 3:20According to Wikipedia, assisted suicide is legal
- 3:24in some countries under certain circumstances,
- 3:27including Austria, Belgium, Canada, Germany,
- 3:30Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain,
- 3:32Switzerland, parts of the United States. and
- 3:35all six states in Australia. Goes on to say the
- 3:37constitutional courts of Colombia, Ecuador, Estonia,
- 3:40and Italy have legalized assisted suicide, but
- 3:42their governments have not yet legislated or
- 3:44regulated the practice. What? Parts of the states?
- 3:48Whoa. OK, well, um, here's a map. Oh, good. It's
- 3:54legal in D .C. I need I need to record a self
- 3:57-promo at some point. Hi. If you like what I
- 3:59do, if you want to support me, you can head to
- 4:01merchfrom .dev and get yourself some Next up
- 4:18on my list we've got this this This came across
- 4:33my feed last week. It was around the earlier
- 4:36part of the week It has been sitting around in
- 4:39my back pocket as a thing that I didn't even
- 4:41know how to begin approaching because it it broke
- 4:44my brain in in ways I think because I should
- 4:48have expected this and I just ha headline the
- 4:52army's newest recruits tech executives from meta
- 4:55open AI and more high -ranking executives from
- 4:59major tech companies like Palantir and Metta
- 5:02have been literally added to the military, but
- 5:06they're basically just consultants, but Big Tech
- 5:08has been angling to just suck up that government
- 5:12contract money recently. Metta, Google, Microsoft,
- 5:15they're all supplying infrastructure, at least.
- 5:18for military exercises, like AI stuff to help
- 5:22you analyze the battlefield or whatever, and
- 5:24cloud computing for your airstrikes, I guess.
- 5:27They are warmongers, like they sell war -supporting
- 5:31infrastructure. That is, that's what these companies
- 5:33do. So you see Google, oh yeah, the search engine,
- 5:35right? Yeah, they also help with bombings. Microsoft
- 5:39is kind of worse on that. Oracle's also very
- 5:41bad, and Palantir, I mean Palantir's an actual
- 5:43contractor. Long story short, there's a blurring
- 5:46and vanishing difference. between government,
- 5:50like military contractors, and big tech as we
- 5:54knew them. Meta, a social media platform, is
- 5:58developing AI models that they're then turning
- 6:00around and selling to the US military. Same with
- 6:02OpenAI and ChatGPT. So, fun. So what does this
- 6:06mean? Not a ton, it's just collusion. Like it's
- 6:08just, it's the usual goings -ons of money being
- 6:12passed around between major corporations and
- 6:15the military. They want to be more embedded in
- 6:18the military so they have better offers and options
- 6:21for getting contracts. That's my read on this.
- 6:24It sucks, it's dumb, and it shouldn't be happening.
- 6:26But that's the mantra of this entire country.
- 6:29Moving on. What do we got here? What do we got
- 6:31here? What do we got here? Oh, this one's fucked.
- 6:33This is more of a technical thing, but there
- 6:35was a snooping process that was discovered that
- 6:39a bunch of the shady apps, you know, like Facebook,
- 6:42Instagram, a handful of Chinese apps as well,
- 6:45were using to circumvent protections for your
- 6:49privacy on your own device. The attack is called
- 6:51Local Mess, and there's a really great write
- 6:53-up about it. I'll link to it below. But here
- 6:55is the summary paragraph. Quote, we disclose
- 6:58a novel tracking method by Meta and Yandex potentially
- 7:01affecting billions of Android users. We have
- 7:04found that native Android apps, including Facebook,
- 7:07Instagram, and several Yandex apps, including
- 7:09Maps and Browser, silently listen on fixed local
- 7:13ports for tracking purposes. So what does that
- 7:16mean? Let's start with defining a few terms.
- 7:18Let's start with port. Port in like computing
- 7:20terms is... It refers to a place in which a device
- 7:24can do communication. Think of it like a literal
- 7:28port, like a cargo port, but for data instead
- 7:31of cargo. And so a, quote, local port is a port
- 7:35that's on your device. And what this is saying
- 7:37is these apps were setting up ports that were
- 7:41quietly being used by websites that you were
- 7:45visiting. That would funnel data to the apps
- 7:48that could then associate your web traffic with
- 7:51your advertising ID that the apps know about
- 7:53you already They're supposed to be a disconnect
- 7:56there. They're supposed to be a native app tracking
- 7:59ID and Separately, there's web stuff. They're
- 8:02supposed to be a gap there But they were looking
- 8:05for ways to get around that so they could better
- 8:07track you around the internet leveraging features
- 8:09of your devices without your knowledge to gather
- 8:12information against the will of the platform
- 8:14and the spec of the design. And then they got
- 8:17caught and stopped doing that. So, or at least
- 8:19changed their strategy. According to this, they've
- 8:23stopped doing it as of June 3rd. Hopefully they
- 8:26keep not doing it. Next up, Musk is suing New
- 8:29York State over a social media hate speech law.
- 8:32New York State has a law that they're basically
- 8:35saying if you run a social media website, you
- 8:37need to disclose how you monitor hate speech.
- 8:40Elon Musk doesn't want to do that with Twitter,
- 8:42probably because they don't monitor hate speech.
- 8:44I've talked about this before, the whole like
- 8:46piecemeal states having their own laws for tech.
- 8:48We've seen it in Texas for the not allowing minors
- 8:52on social media and also in a bunch of other
- 8:54states with porn bans. In California, they've
- 8:57got sort of like their own privacy laws that
- 8:59are trying to emulate some of what the EU does.
- 9:02But because of the way that the states are set
- 9:04up, they're all trying to sort of force companies
- 9:07to have regulation that's not federal, but for
- 9:11all intents and purposes. you kind of have to
- 9:15adhere to it if you want to function in the United
- 9:17States. So it's not federal, it's a state law,
- 9:20but it's a mess. That's what I said last time,
- 9:23I think. I'm pretty sure I said it's a mess.
- 9:25And so, yeah, there's not a lot here. I mean,
- 9:28tech companies are suing states all the time.
- 9:30But this is basically Twitter saying, we don't
- 9:33want to have to tell you what we're doing about
- 9:35hate speech. Stop it. Oh, this one's... But the
- 9:38girls are fighting. Don't don't come at me for
- 9:41that meme. It's a meme. I talked about this on
- 9:43stream last week. Open AI and Microsoft are kind
- 9:47of quietly starting to beef. Microsoft wants
- 9:50to basically own Open AI. They tried to be there
- 9:53first. They wanted to just be the ones that are
- 9:54like the corporate sponsor for Open AI and Open
- 9:57AI would just forever be working with Microsoft.
- 9:59And Open AI is increasingly uninterested in that,
- 10:02it seems, and is less interested in solely working
- 10:05with Microsoft and more interested in Probably
- 10:08trying to eventually use SERP, Microsoft. It's
- 10:10gotten to the point that OpenAI has, I believe,
- 10:14a contract with Microsoft or at least an agreement
- 10:17where Microsoft is their cloud hosting provider
- 10:19for OpenAI for all the chat GPT stuff, but OpenAI
- 10:22doesn't want that to be the case. They want more
- 10:25power. They want more control over their own
- 10:27company, which I can't blame them on that, except
- 10:30for OpenAI does suck. But it looks like they're
- 10:33getting ready to start saying that Microsoft
- 10:34is being anti -competitive, which if it gets
- 10:36to that point, oh boy. Because Microsoft has
- 10:40staked its claim on like co -pilot and co -pilot
- 10:43branding and all that built into PCs powered
- 10:45by OpenAI or whatever. If OpenAI starts beefing
- 10:48with Microsoft, let me rephrase that. I hope
- 10:50OpenAI continues beefing with Microsoft. Hey,
- 10:53good news. Here's good news. ZeniMax is unionizing.
- 10:57This is gaming. We're in gaming now. Uh, sorry.
- 11:01I warned you. Oh, damn. Reporting from Engadget.
- 11:04Members of the Zenimac Workers United CWA union
- 11:07have ratified the contract agreement with parent
- 11:10company Microsoft. This agreement with the union
- 11:12representing the video game studios quality assurance
- 11:14employees marks the first time that Microsoft
- 11:17has entered into any union contract in the US.
- 11:21That is... significant the Zenimax is best known
- 11:25for working under Bethesda doing I think right
- 11:29now they're doing Elder Scrolls online and Bethesda
- 11:32got picked up by Microsoft and when that happened
- 11:34the QA team was like hey Don't fuck us as a part
- 11:37of this and now it seems that it worked. That's
- 11:40exciting like literal years in the making I think
- 11:42this all started back in like 2022 2023 well
- 11:46done. Yay workers go Union. I'm just gonna read
- 11:50the headline here. This is from 404 media They
- 11:54do amazing work go check out 404 media. They're
- 11:56they're excellent Here's the headline martyrdom
- 12:00or bust Texas man caught plotting terror attack
- 12:03through roblox chats I am kind of just I'm sitting
- 12:08here like I'm just it's wild they were there's
- 12:11essentially just a group that is like Chatting
- 12:13in roblox and this dudes like I am going to be
- 12:16a martyr I'm going to do a terrorist and like
- 12:19the feds found out because someone else in roblox
- 12:22overheard and was like hey feds This doesn't
- 12:25seem good. The dude's handle was crazy pain with
- 12:28it with a three like oh my I'm I'm I'm reading
- 12:33about You know remember when there was like all
- 12:37that shit going down with Investigations into
- 12:40Trump and there was like person of interest one
- 12:43or whatever like they when there's when there's
- 12:46legal documents They label people as like, you
- 12:48know, person one, person two, party one, whatever.
- 12:52Roblox user one replied to the person. Roblox
- 12:57user one is. At this point, if they don't hold
- 13:01the trial in Roblox, then what the fuck is the
- 13:04point? He was caught. He wanted to bomb some
- 13:07kind of music festival. I'm seeing Christian
- 13:09music festival, but also other. other groups
- 13:13as well. It seems like the dude was unhinged
- 13:15and thought that he was like a member of ISIS
- 13:17or something. When questioned he was like it
- 13:19was an emotional response but then also said
- 13:22that he wanted to either get the hell out of
- 13:24the US and if not that then quote martyrdom or
- 13:27bust. So hey if you are playing Roblox keep an
- 13:32eye out. I used to gag about how everybody should
- 13:36use RuneScape guild chat to coordinate the uprising.
- 13:42Now we're here. Alright, last thing. I've kinda
- 13:46skipped over some of the other stuff. I wanna
- 13:48end on a fun one. I think we could all use a
- 13:51bit of fun, and not only is this a fun one, it
- 13:54also has the cutest pictures to go with it. Here
- 13:56we go. A book collector in the UK was, quote,
- 13:59gobsmacked. He was rearranging his collection
- 14:02of books, and he opened up one of them that he
- 14:04got at a charity shop, like a secondhand store,
- 14:08a while ago. And he was flipping through it,
- 14:10and he found that it contained handwritten notes
- 14:13from his wife from 50 years ago. Timeline. They
- 14:18were not together 50 years ago and and his wife
- 14:21had a book and drew in it his wife's mom gave
- 14:24that book away like, you know charity drive gave
- 14:27it away at some point years ago in the 70s, holy
- 14:32shit this guy is then a book collector and just
- 14:36happens to have purchased this book at some point
- 14:39and Then way later on happens to look into it
- 14:43and see that's my brother -in -law. And these
- 14:45are my wife's writings Oh, hey, they went on
- 14:48to discover two other novels on his bookshelf
- 14:50also featured annotations from his wife. Quote,
- 14:54we both sat there not quite sure how to handle
- 14:56it because this was just extraordinary. So this
- 14:59guy now says that he essentially has a quest
- 15:01to go find more books that his wife wrote in
- 15:0450 years ago. This is the news that we need.
- 15:07This is what we need. And look at the... It's
- 15:12a good one to end on. Let me know how this was.
- 15:14I don't know what I'm doing. I'm just recording
- 15:16stuff. I Let me know if you like this. I I hope
- 15:20I hope hope you did obviously I didn't talk about
- 15:24Same things I talked about in yesterday's post.
- 15:27So you want to hear about the Iran stuff? That's
- 15:30there's a whole video on that. That's yesterday
- 15:32Regardless, take care be well. I'll see you on
- 15:37Monday. Goodbye
