- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Hi, everybody, and welcome into this week's edition of Midwest Racing Central.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Today I'm Pete Bistoni.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: There's a lot going on under the ASA umbrella these days with the Stars National Tour, the Midwest Tour, the CR Super CRA Super Series, and the Southern Series.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Let's bring in from the ASA who's got his fingers on all those pieces of that puzzle.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Marty Mello is with us here on Midwest Racing Central today.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Marty, how are you?
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: How are you?
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: I'm doing well.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: We appreciate the time.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: As I mentioned, I know you're you're a busy guy.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: We got a lot to get to.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: I want to sort of start our conversation, maybe getting a barometer from you, Marty, this year in 2026 with all those things that I just talked about.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: How would you sort of assess where the ASA is in 2026?
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's a great question.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Overall, I think we're in a really good spot uh still.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: Um it's been challenging, um, for sure.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, we have uh three series and track TV that that I that we own now, and you know, trying to get in get in there and understand it all and and start making our longer term plans.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: So um say it's to say it was easy, it was it that wouldn't be accurate, but no, we've had some real good success.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: The races have been good.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: We fought weather as everyone in the country this year by with multiple rainouts and cancellations.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: Um, but it's been our priority, I think, in the stars level.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: We had three rainouts now, two if we've have planned makeups or made up.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: We're trying to figure out the Toledo one now.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Uh, same thing with the CRA, several cancellations with weather.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: So I think uh we we that's just part of it, right?
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: I mean, the first year as ownership, you probably I probably didn't need that, but we've been working through it and it helps us grow as a company.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: So let's just uh take weather aside.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Some of the other things, I mean, again, some of the car counts have been great, some have been a little bit challenging and all.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, I guess you got to chuck up some of this to the economy, but when you talk to the race teams, Marty, what are you hearing from your teams across the board around the country?
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, it's easy to blame the economy, right?
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: And it definitely has an impact.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: I mean, with the fuel prices, we could look at that, the hotel prices also everything skyrocketed.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: And so we could definitely put some uh some pointing fingers at that.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: But the bottom line, we need to look beyond that.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: Um, we didn't we haven't got to where we're at today with the lower car counts just because the economy has turned in the last uh year or two.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: But um, so we're looking past that um and trying to figure out with the racers what they need.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: The bottom line, everything's more expensive for our race teams, not just the travel, the tires, the the upkeep of the cars, uh the crew trying to get the crew to the staff now.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: These the old days are there's still some teams out there doing that, but the uh you know they try to pay their teams now on a day raid and pit passes, so it all adds up.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: And what does that mean?
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: How do we support those teams is trying to find additional funding, whether that's through um you know sponsorship and different things that we're working on to help pass that down to the racer.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: So the bottom line, we need to get the purse money up and um at the uh middle to back for sure, and help these teams get to the racetrack.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: I think that's gonna help.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: We've seen the lower car counts.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: We fluctuate with some big swings from 25 to 16.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: You know, we don't we never want to field a national tour at 16, of course, even though those 16 racers are are great quality racers and teams.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: So, but the the appearance of that, the optics for our sponsors and everything doesn't look good.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: So we want to work on that and and figure the things out.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: Where are we gonna go to these tracks?
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: How are we gonna have some more combined races with either our own series or or other uh sanctioning bodies uh to help lift those those uh car counts?
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: Uh we we go to places where we have to have supers or pros, right?
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: We could bring so many, but if we're not getting the local supers and pros out of the garage, so to speak, into the track with us that we can, we're gonna be in a little bit of trouble.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: So big picture stuff, but no simple answer.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: I wish I had it.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Um, but we definitely have some ideas and plans on that.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Marty, the number one question I get when we talk about the ASA is rules and the difference between Stars National, Midwest Tour, CRA, and Southern Super Series.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: How could you sort of capsulize that for our viewers and listeners here on the show?
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, I mean, that initiative has been in place to try to get back to everyone across the country on a standardized rule package, whether it's super or prose.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: That's been going on well before I've entered the scene here in the side of it.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: But um, the ULRA group who works hard on the rules, we're actually working on 27 rules now.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: Um, so that has members from across the country tracks and and series that have input on that.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Um, so I think we're close.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: We we we uh we have close rules for the most part, but we do have some islands out there.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: Midwest tour is completely different, for example.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: And I think you're alluding to that.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: I live in Wisconsin, I love the racing up here.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: We you know it's great.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: Um, but at some point, do we keep that out on an island or do we bring that into the national rules packets to help the teams in different aspects and our partners?
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: So we're looking at that scenario for sure.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: Um, but I think getting the rules where we are and continue to refine those with the different committees, the SEAL committee, the ABC Committee, the recently developed chassis committee, which is focusing on the safety side of it.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: I mean, getting all these things um organized the last two years have been a great help.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: Um, another initiative we took this year working with Cars for West out there um and the East just recently tried county is we we it's one thing to say we have the same rules, but how are we how are we implementing those and how are we doing tech?
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: And we've we've done that the last four or five months.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: We've my staff and uh Kevin Harvick, Tim Huddleson, Candace's staff have crossed crossed the lines there.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: And we've been out there helping them in tech, and they've come out and helping us.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: So getting to know them and understand what they're doing, and vice versa has been a great help.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: And it helps the competitors.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: The competitors know now who our staff is on the west, right?
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: Where they might not see them commonly.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: Um, and vice versa.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: So when these teams go west, east, or in between, they should understand that tech not only the rules can be very similar, and they should know those faces.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: They should know who those tech directors are and and the Rudys and the Michels and the Rick uh Southwest and all those people that are involved, they're comfortable now, right?
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: And I think that's as a whole has been very successful.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: I want to double back to the car store west because obviously some other big news there as it relates to track TV for next year.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: But you're up in Wisconsin, I'm down here in the Chicago area.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Lots of rain last week, but it looks like things are going to be better this Sunday here for the Benton House and Memorial at Grundy County Speedway.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: And you were telling me before we came on the air here, car count looks pretty good.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: How are things looking for Sunday down there at Morris, Marty?
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they're looking great.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: I was we were so happy to get that rescheduled, um, not only for the track, but in ourselves and the teams.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: The teams have lost a few races in the Midwest this year.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: It's a tights points battle, as you know, going in.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: So the last thing I wanted was to lose another points race for them, and they have to end it at a championship at lacrosse with three races down.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: So we worked hard with the track on that.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: Todd Thielen's a consultant for us up here.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: He he really worked and spearheaded that and got that rescheduled for this Sunday.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: Couldn't do it on Saturday.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: I guess they have a corn festival going.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: But hey, the car count's 26 plus this morning, which in these days I'm not gonna complain.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: And it is a great mixture of locals, regionals, and some um outsiders coming in.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: So uh that should be the weather looks great, should be a really exciting race uh on Sunday.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: Uh Saturday, we have our Awasa Nationals uh going on up with our CRA uh Turn One Pro Series um up at Rex's place.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: Um so two great days of racing, both on track TV.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: So we should be uh excited to have that all weekend.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Good stuff.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: I don't care, but the Bears don't play till Monday night.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: So if you're in Chicago, go to the Grundy County Speedway on uh Sunday afternoon.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Um let's talk a little bit more about the Midwest series this year and what we've seen.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: And if you can, I'm sure you're probably already working on the 2027 schedule.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Anything you can tell us about what we might see that might be different or the same for next season with the Midwest tour?
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we are we are working on the schedules as a whole across uh the country, communicating different uh sanctioned bodies and series.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: Of course, we want to stay off each other.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: Um, for my series, I definitely don't want to stack on top of each other.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: And we had some of that this year with the national tour in the Midwest.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: Um, we definitely don't want to do that.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: I think right now we're sitting successful not to do that next year, uh, moving some stuff around.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: Um, so those try those those negotiation talks are going on and get dates finalized.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: I can tell you there's a draft schedule that's set set, I'd say it's set without the signed sanction agreement.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: So we're at the sanction agreement level now.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: Um, we do have two scenarios, you know.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: Um we're traditionally two barrel racing up here, we and that would look very similar.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: Um, if we decide to uh go make the move and go four rail racing um with the Midwest tour um and follow back over to the ULRA rules, then that has a different schedule, of course.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: Um, not too far off, but a little bit different look.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: So we're not we're not 100% decided on that yet, working with the tracks and everyone that takes uh a part of that, a change like that.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: So, but we're getting pretty close, and we do have plan A, plan B.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: And I think within the next week or two, you'll see some announcements on that stuff.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: All right, we'll look forward to that.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: How about on the stars national tour?
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: In your mind, what's like the sweet spot in terms of the length of a schedule over there with the national tour for next year for you guys?
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that that's a balance um, Pete.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, you go you talk to our development teams that are pretty much full pine teams.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: We've got Toyota Chevy backed OEM teams now.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: Looks like Ford may be coming in next year.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: So they want, you know, 16 plus races, but they're not the core of they're the they're not the core of our of our drivers, right?
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: We so we have to balance that with the with the rest of our drivers.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: I think the sweet spot's kind of where we've been, uh 10 to 13 races right in there.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: I think that is the sweet spot for our national tour.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: Um, I could tell you right now, I could fill up a schedule of 16, 17 races.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: There's lots of interest from tracks, but we're not gonna do that next year.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: I think we're gonna land around that 12 or 13 uh mark um uh on that schedule.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: And then the other question is you know, it's always been lingering that national tour needed to build and get its feet uh on the ground, so to speak, and it's done that the last four years.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: And at what point are we gonna be truly a national tour, as some say, and get farther west?
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: Um, so we're looking at those options also.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: I think we will see a couple races out west with the national tour next year if everything comes comes together.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: Um, so again, 12 to 13 races there, trying to expand that national footprint um for a national tour and trying to get these regionals uh points and purses more in line and feed that system, right?
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: That's what it's all about.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: All right, back to the national tour, ending the year now on a reschedule, as you mentioned, New Smyrna Speedway and Cletus McFarland.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Connect those dots for our listeners was coming up there in November.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, that's a great thing.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: We rescheduled, we reached out after we lost Dominion and we needed that race.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: And we were looking to change up the championship night somewhere a little bit different, too.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: For our partners were asking for that, and and we did.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: So we reached out to Jane and Holly, and and they've got the governor's cup.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: What a great event that's been over the over decades.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: It's it's it's kind of fallen off the last few years, as as many other places have.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: So Jane and Collie are very concerned to get that back up um and go in full tilt again.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: So we came up with a plan to go there, and it's championship night for our CRA super series, it's championship night for a national tour.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: Um, so it's gonna be a big night down that.
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: We got uh a good purse where we're looking to add to that.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: So we got a lot of interest from the teams.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: I think we'll be 30 plus cars.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: Um, so that's really exciting, but you always worry about for them the fans, right?
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: How do we get them?
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: Well, Cletus, we we see what he's doing.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: He loves racing.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: Boy, does he love racing?
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: He's not just doing it for his social media, he truly is a race car driver.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: So he's uh debuted, I think it was at Berlin in a pro and he's and he's got a super built by um by uh Rhett Jones racing out there's fielding it.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: So we kind of worked with them and said, Hey, where do you want to debut that?
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: Um, as far as a national tour, and we came up with that date.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: So it's uh just across the way from his home and track.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: So I think he's actually racing a big event Friday, Saturday night, and and they're gonna make the pilgrimage across, so to speak, with a big caravan of people coming over to Wyoming run the super on Sunday.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: So uh we're hoping to pack that place in, um, of course, and I think we're bringing in some extra seating for that already based off of the numbers we're seeing.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he moves the needle for sure.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: So we'll look forward to that down there uh in November.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: So we referred to Track TV a couple of times, and again, for some of our viewers and listeners who don't know what that is, that's also under your umbrella as well.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: That's where you can see a lot of these races that we're talking about with Marty.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: So let's start with what's the vision for Track TV?
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: Where is it now?
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: Where do you want to see it go, Marty?
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: Well, the vision's been very generically built, um, slow paced and built methodically prior to the previous ownership.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: Bob Sargent had it and built that.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: Started out on a on a platform um that was fine and it didn't have Roku, didn't have the fast channels, things like that that helps accelerate that.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: But that was perfectly fine.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: We've organically built that for the last several years.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: Um, good subscriber base.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: Um, but we're looking at what do we want?
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: Your question is what do you want to do?
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: That we want to continue to grow that at a at a good pace, but manageable, and and expand that footprint, of course.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: Um a lot of people don't understand, or maybe they do understand, that the funding for these series comes from TV rights, uh TV stuff.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: It also comes from sponsorship and different things.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: Um, the dirt's very successful at that.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: You look at high limits and world outlaws and what they're doing and the purse they're putting up.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: And uh, and I'd be willing to bet if you were able to really disclose all that, a lot of it's good sponsorship and partnerships, but a lot of it's TV too.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: So expanding that TV footprint is only going to help our partners help the series and help the drivers get exposure, which helps them either to move up and on or and or helps their sponsorship, right?
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: So we're looking at that very methodically.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: There is a five-year plan on that.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: And when the opportunity became became available to go west, it's a big jump.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: We're adding uh roughly 80 to 90 races out there, uh, programming wise.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: That's a lot when you start talking about production and everything on the back side of that.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: So, but when you have an opportunity to pick up a series like the Cars Tour West, and uh the people that are involved in that, and and you have that opportunity in front of you, you're gonna jump on it, whether you're ready or not.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: I would say we are ready.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: Um, and we're working on putting all those pieces together now.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: So it's gonna be good across the board for the fans, the drivers, our partners in the series, of course.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: So again, Cars Tour West will be on track TV in 2027.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: You mentioned the people out there.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: Well, one of those people is, of course, Kevin Harvick.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: What's it been like working with Kevin on this whole operation, Marty?
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: Oh, great, great.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's he's so so in tune and intense in short pack racing.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: Um, his involvement out there and now nationally, um, racing his son Keelan, of course, is a big part of that, but he is really, really focused on bringing grassroots back to where it needs to be.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: Um, he's heavily invested in it at all aspects on the West.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: Um, we talk weekly, multiple times about ideas, plans, unification of rules, um, how how we get these things better, bringing the fun back to the to the fans, bringing the fun back to the pits, to the teams is a big, big initiative we're working on.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: So they've been having success with that out there with their with their kickoff parties and their pill draw parties.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: And we've learned from that.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: We did a we've done a couple ourselves now and had success with some ride-alongs with our drivers.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: And so we're looking at all that and communicating.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: It's it, you know, when you have someone at that level that the it's a sounding board and you're bouncing these ideas, and it's not just Marty Mel out there thinking about should we do this or that?
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: It your confidence is up, right?
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: So having that there is all obviously good.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: He's a phone call away and he wants everything to be good for short track racing.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: Marty, when Keelan runs one of your events, or if you have a NASCAR driver like Christopher Bell who came off the Southern 500 and then won at Tri-County a couple of weeks ago, do those drivers and those names give you a bump at the box office?
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: Does that bring more exposure?
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, without a doubt, it does.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: Um, it helps the exposure um for sure for the fans and the ticket sales and and things like that for sure.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: It also helps the bump.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: I think our teams love it.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: I mean, they want to race against the Christopher Bells and and then the people that are coming in from the cup series, Noah Grayson's has raced with us.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: Um, and there's a few more car uh Carson Hosefara.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: So when those drivers come down to the to the roots and race in our series, and they're typically in pretty good equipment, that that sets another benchmark mentally for our guys.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: And they they bring their they always bring their A game, but they really come uh driven to race against them.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: So it's good in the pits for sure on the fans and ticket sales and the viewership, it helps without a doubt um on that side.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: Well, we're certainly excited for what lies ahead.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: Congratulations on what you've been able to accomplish.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: Marty, thanks for the time.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: Appreciate it.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: Enjoy the rest of the season.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you bet.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: Thanks for having me on.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: That's Marty Mello from the ASA.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: Lots coming up this year.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Some pretty big plans coming up in 2027, and we'll have it covered for you right here at Midwestracingcentral.com.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: Speaking of that, we talked about the Bentonhausen Memorial Sunday afternoon at Crundy County Speedway for the ASA Midwest Tour.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: We've got Dirt Truck Racing at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek, Wisconsin, and of course, the National Short Track Championships.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: All those years at Rockford Speedway.
