It's all about turning buttons And sliding dials. Right? Whoosh.
• 0:06
[upbeat music] Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding.
• 0:21
It's, uh, Full Spectrum Cycling Show 46 here, folks. We got, uh, JK back in his, uh, usual spot there. Hi, everybody. Splitting, splitting Tony and JK is, uh, Shannon today. Woo-hoo. Hola, hola, hello. Separating us.
• 0:38
[laughs] Send, send us to our corners. In the, in this corner. [laughs] The border. Right? Sniff boxin' time. Shannon made the trip up from McHenry- Il-... down there Illinois way. Illinois. Come buy some parts.
• 0:49
You got... Do you have any Wisconsin jokes as being an Illinois guy? No. No. I hang out mostly here. [laughs] They got jokes about my state. My, my state is as a joke. Right on. Yeah, I know. Tell us an Illinois joke.
• 1:02
What's a good one? Uh- Clean. No, it doesn't really matter, though. No. I just- It doesn't have to be clean... I just thought- Wow... I just thought one of Shannon's daughters might listen to the show.
• 1:10
You running a fever over there? [laughs] Yeah, no, they don't. I can show you my paycheck. I can show you the taxes. That's a joke. Mm. [laughs] Why, why do trees in Wisconsin bend south? 'Cause Illinois sucks.
• 1:23
[laughs] Oh. [laughs] Oh, my. Jesus, God. We're not even gonna get into Bears jokes, right? No. No. I'm not a football fan, so I'm good there. There you go. And egg. Holy cracky. How about that, uh, 50-degree Sunday?
• 1:36
Oh, man. 51. It was a record here. Yeah. I don't know if you got a record where you were, but me- And according to me- meteorological winter, which starts Ja- December 1st, we have yet to have a day below 20 degrees.
• 1:52
Wow. Which is insane. Yeah. From Jan- from December 1st until February, whatever it is today, we've not had a, a 19-degree-or-colder day. That is crazy. That is nuts. Colder no trucks. That is- We were at the [laughs]...
• 2:05
we were riding the Slip-in Ride down at Silver Lake, and, uh- Oh, that's it... it turned to mashed potatoes real quick. Wow. Yeah, that's better than the ice, though. Yeah, so Saturday it wasn't as...
• 2:14
It w- Saturday was nice. Saturday was fine, but towards the end, by, by second lap, it was just gone. Did you get out there kind of to set it up the day before? Yeah, they set it up nice. Yeah. They had it all groomed.
• 2:26
Nice. Yeah, I had to take a trip out to Madison to deliver a Sendero Chumba Frame to JP, and he happened to be running an event at Norsk Golf Club or something in- Yeah... in Mount Horeb. Not to mention Grumpy Troll.
• 2:41
Yeah, Grumpy Troll was there. Oh, yeah. So good. Oh, and there's like a- So good... right across the street from there, there's a hole in the wall- Yep... bar diner awesomeness. I can't remember the name of it.
• 2:51
We should go there more often, 'cause that's, that's some nice riding out there. Yep.
• 2:55
Well, if they would keep this course that they had for that race going, which I don't think they can, I think it was a one-time thing, but it was like a two-and-a-half-mile course on this g- golf course, fairly open golf course, but kind of hilly.
• 3:06
And it was really, really nice. Nice. They'd been grooming it with snowmobiles, and then they ran a snow dog over it the, I think the morning of the event maybe.
• 3:14
But it was actually s- some of the best packed trails I've ridden in a while, and I bet the next day [laughs] wh- well, you had to s- you had to slip and slide. [laughs] So I would imagine it, it, uh- Glazed up and-...
• 3:24
it went away pretty quickly and then... Now, is that close to the Blackhawk trails? 'Cause that's where- It is on the west side of Ma- it's west of Madison in Mount Horeb, which is, like, 15 miles west of Madison.
• 3:34
Blackhawk I think is more northwest from where... You take 151 to get to Mount Horrible. Yeah, I asked, uh... Oh, this is gonna- That's where the next huge ass is this Saturday... so many trolls...
• 3:46
and I asked JP if he was gonna be there. He said the trails are awesome, but I think him and Spinner are heading- Oh, at Bl- yeah, right at Blackhawk. Yeah.
• 3:52
Yeah, that's a, that's a ski hill that has, um, trails too, and normally I think you have to have a pass to ride there.
• 3:59
But for some, somehow they're getting a deal where if you enter the race, you get a pass for the rest of the year. Rest of the year, yep. So yeah, that sounds cool.
• 4:06
Yeah, I was asking JP if he was gonna be hanging out there, but I guess him and Spinner are heading up north. Are you doing the race? Yep. Right on. Does, does JPR actually ever work?
• 4:15
Because every fricking day he's posting a photo riding somewhere. [laughs] I'm jealous too. I don't know. Yeah. I know. It's like, come on, man. Ooh, it was icy today and I had a beer. Either that or he doesn't sleep.
• 4:26
[laughs] Yeah, maybe that. Maybe that's it. Maybe that's it. 'Cause, well, he was talking about the reason he got the Sendero is his buddy,
• 4:32
uh, down in Iowa and he are planning on doing the Tour Divide, and they, it's like- Oh, that's a great bike for that... he's like, "20, 28 days, a- 110 miles a day."
• 4:40
I'm like, "Oh, well, then we might extend that, though, if it's taking you a little longer so, you know, plenty of time to go out there and ride the Great Divide too." That's gonna be awesome, though.
• 4:48
We got somebody to track and watch. Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. Yeah, I don't think he's... I don't know that they're doing the race. I think they're just riding the trail, but I'm not positive. Oh.
• 4:56
I think, you know, you can ride that trail just as a trail, so. Sure you can. Right? [laughs] Probably do it in, like, three years'- Yeah. [laughs] Exactly... worth of chunks.
• 5:05
If I go do it, I'll do it, uh- The one picture I saw-... I'll do the northern chunk and the middle chunk and southern chunk...
• 5:09
like, a couple years ago, the one picture I saw was a dude leaning on his bike, and you're kind of like, "What's he doing?" And then you see the bear [laughs] in the, in the distance.
• 5:17
[laughs] It's like, oh, yeah, I wouldn't be riding either. [laughs] It's like he's waiting for the bear to leave. I'm like, wow, I don't wanna ride bikes where I get to a situation where I could get killed by a bear.
• 5:27
Well, that's when you're riding one of those Onyx hubs. It's, it's super silent. Yeah. You know, maybe you can just roll right past him without him even hearing you. I'm not worried about the noise. I'm...
• 5:35
the fact that he's gonna smell my tastiness. Yeah, and they can run pretty fast. I get, yeah, they can run really fast. A little bit faster. A little bit faster. [laughs] I got a little nervous.
• 5:42
There were a couple coyotes on the oak leaf- Ah... rolling north by, uh, Thirsty Fox, and I was like, "Okay, you can just go away now." Yeah. "Come on, aren't you... No, this is your turf, brother." Yeah. Oh, okay.
• 5:52
Go, just, just walk across, please. Yeah, we have city coyotes now. [laughs] We have a lot of city coyotes. They're well-fed.
• 5:57
Like, you could d- [laughs] You could see coyotes right down the road there on the river, no problem. Nice. [laughs] That's great. They were here first. Milwaukee lions, too. Yeah. That one- The lion, yeah...
• 6:06
that one cracked me up. Deer are everywhere along that trail. Yeah. Along the river. Oh, my God, there's deer all the time. There was this, they had a great- And they're big...
• 6:12
they had a great stuffed animal over on, uh-... up north by the river, stuck in the tree, of a lion. Oh, nice. [laughs] So, like, you could always [laughs] like go, "Yeah, there's a walking lion, brother." Yeah.
• 6:23
[laughs] So, uh, one of the things I thought interesting about JP's and, uh, his buddy is, uh, Vaughn, um, they're doing it single speed also. So- [laughs] I was thinking what I would ride- So cool... on the trail.
• 6:36
Besides, I have the- the- the Chumba Stella ti, which I probably would use, but- Stella... I took that, uh, old Tatanka out with the Rohloff on it. Yeah, you- I thought how nice-... Rohloff...
• 6:45
the Rohloff would be on [laughs] the trail. Yeah, exactly. 'Cause I- I could use all the gears I can get. Yeah. What's the el- That's nuts, man. The elevation's gotta be crazy out there. Yeah, it is.
• 6:54
It's- Yeah, I- I haven't, you know, ridden the route, so I- I don't... But yeah, it gets over 10,000 feet in some spots, I believe. Yikes. Us flatlanders, man. [laughs] Yeah, you're- you're sucking a lot of wind.
• 7:06
Having lived out there for a little while, and watching people try to acclimate without spending a couple of days in, like, Denver. Oh, right, right, right.
• 7:13
They get up to the mountains and they're suddenly throwing up and stuff. It's like, "Well, have you had any water?" "Well, no." [laughs] Yeah, but- "I had a lot of beer."
• 7:19
Well, yeah, but- Between Denver and Boulder- Beer- beers are better... it was like, what am I doing to myself? And I'm not doing anything active. I lived at- I'm just riding. I lived at 9,500 feet. I'm just riding along.
• 7:27
And you sleep like a baby when you're not taking in that much ox- that much oxygen. After about a week, you were used to it, but it was like, wow, you are, like, literally 9,000 feet. [laughs] You know?
• 7:40
It's 50 degrees out and it feels like the middle of summer in Wisconsin. [laughs] It is gorgeous, though. Yeah, it is. Then the sun goes to bed. It's beautiful. The snow comes out- And then-...
• 7:48
and it's only about 24 degrees. Right. Right after the happy hour, it's like, what happened? Yep. Wait a minute. [laughs] 6:00 and the temperature's dropped 45 degrees. Exactly.
• 7:56
[laughs] So, Shannon, tell us a little bit about your, uh, fat bike adventures this winter. What have you d- Have you done all the Huge Ass races? So far I've done all the Huge Ass races. Nice.
• 8:06
Uh, in fact, I plan on doing Black Hawk, which is the fifth race, and then Nokosa's after that, and I'll be there for that. That's the finale. Right on. It's also the same date as Sweaty Yeti, so.
• 8:18
Lots of, uh, competing events. There's, uh, go over 'em a little later, but in- in Wisconsin, you've got four or five every weekend to pick from, for sure. And two years ago it was like- Nothing... nothing, yeah. Right.
• 8:29
You just had to go find your own adventure back in those days. Yeah. What's happening to Alpine Sunday? There's a... I know we're gonna go over this later, but I'm gonna bring it up now.
• 8:36
That's, uh- Well, Shannon probably knows as much or more about that than I do... the downhill? Uh, yeah, Smoge and, uh, Jameson are putting on, like, a downhill type, uh, fat bike enduro or wh- what do you call it?
• 8:46
Yeah, I ran across that today. Yeah. It was sitting on- It's definitely using one of the, um, more snowboardy runs where they have features and stuff.
• 8:54
I saw Smoge do a little video of monkeying around on a few of the features, but- Yeah, I didn't realize he was attached to it. Yeah. Yeah, he- he put a video out last year, I think the two of them did, and so.
• 9:03
Yeah, there'll be some way to get your bikes and yourself to the top without pedaling, and- [laughs]... I think they're doing three runs, and the best two of- of your three is the current format for your times.
• 9:13
And hopefully this'll take off. I mean, uh, Uncle G and, uh, Tony Grande, and Dustin all went up to a downhill, what, last week or two weeks ago? Yeah, up in Duluth area or- Yeah... somewhere way north of here.
• 9:24
So now Alpine does it. Maybe- maybe it'll catch on. We'll get a little bit more- I think Rib did it last year. Yeah, Rib did one. Rib Mountain did one last year. I don't know if that's coming up again.
• 9:32
It certainly did- We have to look into that. We have to see if that one's- Little Switz should do one. I mean- I think Little Switz has done one. Yeah. I gotta see if we, if we have one at Rib Mountain this year.
• 9:40
Open your hills, we'll bring the money. Right? Yeah, no kidding, huh? I mean- Well, so I- I don't know. I gotta figure out what Swit- Little Switzerland's around here is.
• 9:48
In the summer they still do it, but I think it might be once a month that they do it. Not positive, or it might be once a week. I don't know. But they do ser- lift serve it all year long for bikes.
• 9:59
And then what do they do at the, the Rock in Franklin? Is that snowboards only, or? You know what? That place has kinda gone up and down over what they do- Yeah... over there. I can never quite figure it out. Mm-hmm. So,
• 10:09
um, I don't think they allow bikes on it now. I mean, they used to have the whole- Right... the whole hill had great trails on it. Yeah. But then it kinda closed for a while and...
• 10:18
Yeah, there used to be Wars races there, and in fact- Oh, yeah... uh, when Huge Ass first started, they had a couple races there. Well, now i- Insurance... Wheel & Sprocket has a location right there in that building.
• 10:27
Right. So- By the old BMX track. Yeah, it kinda makes sense to have a, a bike stuff going on, right? [laughs] Considering. Yeah. Boy, that was a heck of a B- BM- BMX track there, too. That was awesome.
• 10:38
That was like a world-class track. That's a good bust your ass up track. [laughs] Speaking of BMX, shout out to Sam yesterday, who came in and checked out the large Wyatt. I think that's a perfect bike.
• 10:50
Oh, is that where the, is that where the Pabst in the, in the sink came from? [laughs] Well, and the celebration, the celebration that got out of...
• 10:55
Well, Sean came in to pay his bill, and I'm like, "Oh, you want a Pabst?" He's like, "Yeah." And then Sam walked in right after and I'm like, "You want a beer?" And he's like, "Uh, no, I'm okay."
• 11:05
And then he saw a Pabst and he's like, "Wait, are they PBRs?" Like, "I'll get you one." [laughs] So we were celebrating that I'm gainfully employed again. Ah, yeah, Tony. But not just a bike shop, uh- Yeah, yeah...
• 11:17
stalwart anymore. Oh, did you come back to the- Mm-hmm. Oh, no. He's one of those it guys again. Do I have to, I have to fish out the fat burger parking only? [laughs] No, no, no.
• 11:28
[laughs] I'm not coming back to UWM, dude. Oh, okay. No fucking way. There we go. Oh, God. No fucking way. I was gonna say, you're, yeah, you're being very, uh, I love that. Yeah. No, no, no, no, no.
• 11:36
I, I, state employees- [laughs] Not promoting that part. State employee was very good to me, but S- UWM's a... I, s- since we're not rated here, UWM's a clusterfuck from the word go. Tell me about it.
• 11:48
I'm not, you know, I'm not dealing with that IT ever again. [laughs] Oh, my God. Closest... Nah, we're not... Never mind. Next subject. [laughs] I'll go on forever. Indeed. [bell ringing] Top- Well- Top of the hill...
• 12:00
we'll go to the next subject then. Yeah. Ooh. Top of the hill. Uh, Shannon brought in the Deschutes. Oh, thank you, Shannon, 'cause- Uh, Mirror Pond Pale Ale... a fantastic pale ale. You are welcome.
• 12:11
This is, uh, some leftover spoils from the Slip 'N Ride. Ah. Deschutes sponsored that or helped sponsor that. Nice. That's a good sponsor. Deschutes does a good job with bike stuff. Yeah, they- For sure...
• 12:21
and they do a good job with beer stuff, too. For sure Out of the Bend, Oregon there. 5% Elkahooey and, uh- 40... 40 IBUs. And then it's, it's, uh- It's a tasty beverage... It is.
• 12:32
It's amazing how many beers that taste, you know, that are a similar style can taste, you know, quite different. But this is a good one. Mm-hmm. It's got some kinda animal with a, with a claw on the front of it. Yeah.
• 12:43
Yeah. Good artwork from Deschutes. Yeah. I've, I've never had a bad Deschutes. That's, you know, there's, there's certain companies that can be hit or miss, but Deschutes is always on.
• 12:51
So this event at Silver Lake, what, how, what was that format? It was a relay. Well, they did have solo men and solo females, but that wasn't decided till towards the end. It's, uh, held by CAMBA- Oh, wow...
• 13:04
and, uh, raising money for the trails there, 'cause now they got groomers and everything. They're trying to build up the trail system at Silver Lake and Petrified Springs. Cool. Oh, Pa- I like Petrified Springs.
• 13:14
So- It's nice and easy. [laughs] So, uh, yeah, Terry Gonzales, uh, I think you guys all know him. He w- he's the race director. Um, so I did a relay with, uh, Uncle G, Uncle Gomez, and, uh, Tony Grande. Nice.
• 13:28
Three-man relay. Uh, we did not place. That's a strong team. Yeah, there were stronger teams. [laughs] I mean, that's, that's, yeah. Well, that- But, um- That Gomez is getting pretty powerful these days. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
• 13:40
He, he actually brought in, uh, our last lap with, like, maybe 10 seconds left. Nice. Uh, we're all, like, just yelling at him.
• 13:48
[laughs] You know, "Put the power down," and he came strolling with j- just a couple clicks left of the clock. But it was a fun day, fun day. Uh, uh, Mary Beth from 75th Inn had, uh, brought in all the food.
• 14:02
There were, uh, burritos there, so free burritos. And then there was a chili cook-off, and Deschutes with the beer, and some Gatorade water. So all to support CAMBA and, uh- Nice...
• 14:12
Silver Lake Trails, and it was a great time. A lot of fun. Yeah, the, I, the, so all these places started grooming this year, and we just gotta get 'em some snow now. Yeah. Tonight, one inch. I know.
• 14:24
Better than a sharp stick in the eye. What the hell? You just can keep- I mean, one-... keep piling it up again... fucking inch. I'm sorry. I want one foot. [laughs] I mean- And let it freeze...
• 14:33
And let it, you know- Let it freeze, let it pack... let it stick around for more than four days. God, I'm just hoping in four weeks from now they have it up in Cable, so. Well, you should be okay up in Cable.
• 14:43
I don't think it's been getting that warm up there. Yeah. Three years ago it was an ice storm right before Birkie. Ooh. Last two years was great. Are you going to do the Birkie? Yep. Oh, nice. Always a good time.
• 14:56
Where do you stay when you're up there in Hayward, Cableville? Usually the Telemark. This year we're, uh, staying in a cabin. There's about 10 of us that are all just hanging out in a cabin.
• 15:07
Yeah, there's some great places to stay up there. I know, uh, right behind the sawmill there's a really cool place. And, uh, I didn't know Telemark was available again. Yeah. No, the condos, the Telemark condos.
• 15:19
Oh, right, right, right. Oh, yeah... The condos. Yeah, not the main lodges- No... still. Not, not that hotel. That's still, like, gone, right? You know, that kinda reminds me of- Birkie... the Overlook Hotel in a way.
• 15:26
[laughs] It's- I, the same thing every time I drive by it. Like, whether it's Chequamegon or Birkie, it's just like, "Wow."
• 15:32
Yeah, there's been, you know, I've been, I think even at, might even have been at a Chequamegon event later on that part of the hotel was even closed, and you're kinda wandering around in there and you're like, "This is kinda creepy."
• 15:44
[laughs] Yeah, so I'm sure we'll hit the sawmill. There's a couple little local places we always hit. I th- I think one of the Kohler family people bought that whole property. I don't know if they still have it, but
• 15:56
that was like, "Well, we just need a private 900 acres or something, so we'll just buy this land here." It's not like we can't afford it. Not use it. But the golf course is still open. The airport's still open.
• 16:04
But yeah, the ski hill- Yeah... nothing. I've had some great times in those condos. Boy, that's, that's a lot of fun in there. Yeah, well, we usually make one person in the cabin have a, uh, have a birthday. Oh.
• 16:16
It's their birthday, so wherever we go it's their birthday. [laughs] Nice. Good call. What do they do at F- what do they do at Phipps for your birthday? We haven't actually been there yet.
• 16:24
[laughs] We heard, we've missed that one. But, uh- You ca- can't miss Phipps. Gotta walk in there with George. Yeah. George from Broken Spoke? > Oh. [laughs] Not gonna throw you under the bus, George.
• 16:36
Don't worry about it. [laughs] Yeah, there was some naked crits back in the old days up there late at night about 2:00 in the morning. Not at Phipps, but right in the bowl right at the- The Telemark?... condos. Yeah.
• 16:46
Yeah. Boy, those were some fun days. Back when Ralph was still around before his airplane accident. Why was the enemy naked, just for the record?
• 16:53
[laughs] It's just, you know, there's good naked- Well, that's why it's-... and there's bad naked, and you're all bad naked... that's why it's done at 2:00 in the morning. Yeah.
• 16:59
So it's not so- So you can't see each other? Right. You don't get- So- You don't, you don't get sunburn on your pee-pee neither. Yeah. Whew. [laughs] That sounds terrible.
• 17:08
[laughs] Ain't nobody wants no sunburn down there. No. That ain't right at all. No. So, uh- Yikes... I don't know what the heck else is going on. I know there was a Super Bowl this weekend. Did anybody watch any ads?
• 17:18
'Cause- No, but-... that's the only good reason to... Well, although the, although- Well, I did watch the Jeep ad later, 'cause I mean, Bill Murray. I didn't catch it- Fucking hilarious... during the Super Bowl.
• 17:27
I'm not sure why. I watched the majority of it. I was rooting for the Chiefs, of course. I didn't watch any- Being a Midwest kid... 'cause, you know. I was rooting for- Don't do that. Hand egg...
• 17:35
I was rooting for numbers. [laughs] Were you? Oh, yeah. How did you do in the pool? Nothing. Oh. Not even, not even a sniff. All right. So this, so this- I'm, like, scheming.
• 17:42
I'm like, "Okay, if they k- kick a field goal, uh, kick it off. Okay, they hold 'em." Stay dangerous there. "Three and out. Get the ball back. Move it down." Yeah. "And then kick another field goal."
• 17:51
Woulda, coulda, shoulda. Yeah. We're gooda. Going back to that Jeep ad. Yeah. Bike Haven hooked up, uh, that bike with all the racks and everything. Josh, the owner there, they hooked up the bike for Bill Murray.
• 18:01
That Jeep electric bike? Nice. That electric bike, yeah. It didn't say Jeep on the, the bike, but I guess Jeep's gonna go ahead and brand one out now. That was the one that was in the commercial? Yeah.
• 18:09
It's funny 'cause- With, with Bur- Bill Murray's butt upon it? Dan what's-up. Yeah. Yep. And TV Lenny, like, promoted it this week and, and I'm like, uh, I, so I watched the video because TV Lenny.
• 18:19
I'm like, wait a minute, this is a, like... How many seconds is that electric Jeep bike in there? Oh, like three. Like a split second. Yeah. Yeah, don't think it- I, I don't even think it's three.
• 18:30
It's like- I, I was really excited t- to hopefully see somebody riding an electric fat bike.
• 18:37
[laughs] That Kyle, the shop manager down there, he got to meet Bike, or he met Bill Murray one of the days before that 'cause they were doing all the filming down there. Nice. Oh, that's cool. So that's pretty cool.
• 18:46
Should get Bill Murray on the line and talk to him about fat bikes. He's a funny dude. So did anybody meet the gopher, 'cause he was in the commercial with a helmet on. Yeah. Oh, did he even s- See you first.
• 18:55
[laughs] See you first. Did he see a shadow or not? I don't even know that. Like, uh- Yeah, he- He did this year... yeah, so early spring apparently. Yeah, so it was supposedly early spring.
• 19:00
Which actually started in November, so. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah.
• 19:04
So, I mean, so it takes three seconds of a fat bike on a Super Bowl commercial to be probably the most exposure any fat bike's ever had in the history of fat biking. [laughs] And e-bike. And e-bike.
• 19:15
And an e-bike at that. Right, and an e-bike at that, and it's just gotten tons of press. I mean, without even trying, I probably found a dozen articles- Right... on there being a fat bike in that ad.
• 19:24
Yeah, and I mean, it wasn't, like, even celebrated as a e-bike. I mean, if you looked and it's like, "Oh, yeah, you can tell it is." But- Bike people... to a, to a layman it would be just- Yeah, they wouldn't know...
• 19:33
it's like, "Oh, that's a-" So do the guys down in Woodstock deal with QuietKat normally? No. Okay. No, first time they had seen it, but- So apparently- The other day they put the racks on it, and- Yeah...
• 19:42
get it all set up for him. It's a Colorado company called QuietKat that's doing the, the bike, I guess.
• 19:46
They do other ones too, but this one seems to be more integrated with the DownTube Battery stuffed in the, in the frame, all stealth-like and- You mean wait, like the Baby Maker? [laughs] Wait, what?
• 19:57
Ah, for crying out loud. Can we- Somebody had to bring that up. Oh. How many, how many Baby Maker returns? Fourth, fourth, you know, show that I keep bringing up the motherfucking Baby Maker. Yes.
• 20:04
This is show 46 and show four of the Baby Maker chronicles. [laughs] Well, and the funny thing is, is I commented about the new French, which they're advertising as a sexy single speed e-bike.
• 20:18
I'm like, "Ah, Jesus Christ, it's a Baby Maker." And I commented on their post, 'cause that's stupid, because they called it sexy, and it's apparently, like, super high-tech. I encourage you to go look at the...
• 20:29
It's, it's-- And he, he even commented. He's like, "Yes, it does look similar to the Baby Maker." [laughs] But I'm like, "Oh, here comes the but." Baby Maker but. You gotta have a but. Here comes the Baby Maker but.
• 20:41
Yeah. I'm wondering how much of CABDA will be dedicated to e-bikes. I know you guys are going on Thursday. Yeah. We're swinging down on Tuesday. We'll have a report two weeks from now. Yeah.
• 20:48
Then a couple weeks down the road. We'll see if we can do a couple, uh, live on the floor interviews. Yeah. I don't know what we're really- I'm, I'm kind of excited to see what, what they...
• 20:58
I mean, love 'em or hate 'em, e-bikes are here to stay. Yep. And I think there's opportunities, sorry JK, to, you know, make some serious inroads. Well, he's not making as much noise as last week about it. Yeah, yeah.
• 21:11
[laughs] So, I, so as a fatbike.com guy, it was always easy to go to trade shows because you have a goal of finding fat bike stuff.
• 21:20
And while there's other cool stuff, I mean, the time is so short if you're trying to get stories, you're kinda focused on, ooh, there's some new tires or there's a new bike from these guys or whatever.
• 21:29
And those Emmy heated grips that I never got, which I don't think they make anymore. Mm-hmm. But, um, going to CABDA, we're gonna be there for, what, six hours, and it's like, what do we focus on?
• 21:39
Because e-bikes are gonna be a huge part of it for sure. Um, but I think we'll just kinda have to take it as it comes. I- Walk every aisle. Yep. Yep. Yeah. Yeah.
• 21:50
I think I spent a good 30 minutes just, like, eyeing over Axis last year, 'cause they had the, the demo bikes with all that and the electronic dropper and... Oh, really? Oh, that stuff is so cool.
• 22:01
[laughs] Oh, that sounds badass. So you go with the, the-- Which shop do you go with? Bike Haven. Gotcha. Right on. Sounds exciting. I'm really stoked for that, by the way.
• 22:11
I postponed my start date at the new job so I could go. [laughs] Just for CABDA. [laughs] Good call. I'm like- So you have an official-... "Can you start this date?" I'm like, "Uh, no."
• 22:19
[laughs] You have an official start date then? Yes, 24th. Right on. Um, so w- in all these Jeep articles, um, the- they brought up the fact that, you know, trails and e-bikes haven't been, like, getting along yet.
• 22:34
And I make-- You know, you guys know who, uh, Mike Kyriak is, right? Lacemine29, he's a wheel builder f- in Colorado. He's super... He, he writes a lot, pretty opinionated on stuff, and they had [laughs]...
• 22:45
This is, like, from an article, like, maybe two years ago when he was talking about sort of the, um, culture of mountain biking is getting, you know, hosed from the old school days, 'cause he's an old guy, you know, kinda like me.
• 22:58
And, uh, I just-- They, for some reason, they had one of these quotes in one of those e-bike articles, but I just liked it. It was so cool 'cause he's like, "Our trails are being systematically shredded.
• 23:08
Yes, by skidding in dumb bros, straight-lining shuttle monkeys, and shortsighted Strava assholes." [laughs] [laughs] And an industry that sells the sport largely by playing to the above users. So I don't know.
• 23:21
What do you, what do you guys... Do, do, do you see that in what's happening with mountain biking slash fat biking? Some. Not necessarily cross-country as much. I mean,
• 23:30
Strava's definitely brought some attention to it, I would say, with people shooting for KOMs and such. Mm-hmm. But around here, I don't. Yeah, I think in the Midwest you have less of that.
• 23:41
First of all, the terrain doesn't really lend itself to being a complete jackass. You really have to put some fitness into it.
• 23:48
And, you know, you don't have the, the runs where you can just shortcut, you know, turns all the time and start really shredding and skidding and being, you know, kinda goofy.
• 23:57
But- Yeah, I don't think we have shuttles around here anywhere. I think we all drive ourselves. [laughs] Right. Yeah. Possibly the one, one's going up the ski hills, but I don't think they care, you know?
• 24:06
They're bringing people in, and they're probably- Making money... maintaining the trails in a way that, um- Absolutely... sort of encourages that kinda hooliganism.
• 24:14
But, uh, I don't know, just thought it was-- I just loved the, the, the words he used to describe [laughs] the various- Oh, yeah... people that are riding this... That cracked me up, is what that did. Dang. Right.
• 24:26
So, uh, this weekend coming up here in, in, in our area, besides- Tomorrow... be- in our area this weekend, tomorrow Tomorrow.
• 24:35
[laughs] Um, besides the thing at, uh, Black Hawk in Madison, which is a huge ass race, there's the Badger State Games going on up at Underdown, north of, uh, Stevens Point there, or wherever that is.
• 24:49
And, uh, I d- I didn't even know that that was the Badger State Games. I was seeing the race, and then I kinda went, "Oh, yeah, they're in the same place." So- [laughs] I- have you ever done a Badger State Games? Nope.
• 25:00
Nope. Uh, I d- I didn't even know they were still doing fat biking in it. I know they'd done 'em a couple years ago, four or five years ago in, uh, Wausau they did one.
• 25:11
And, but, uh, so if you wanna go do the Badger State Games thing that's up there, you're probably already registered, though, if you're gonna do that- Yeah... because, uh, that's one of those things racers do.
• 25:20
And then we talked before about Pat Smage's Alpine Valley thing. I mean, there's just, you know, again, there's also events up in, in Hayward. And come to Wisconsin if you like fat biking. Yeah, absolutely.
• 25:31
I'm pretty sure you'll find something to do. Absolutely. And, uh, down the road we got a bunch of other stuff coming. We'll probably talk about that in another week or two.
• 25:40
But one of the things I'd like to kinda highlight, and it's a long ways off, so who knows, maybe we can get down there, is, um, the US Open Beach Championships in Wrightsville, North Carolina. Whoa.
• 25:51
[laughs] That's a blast. That sounds fantastic.
• 25:53
I got a link to the 2017 video they did, and it's, it's right on a barrier island, and you stay at a hotel there, which is, it just goes back and forth in front of the hotel around, you know, a mile and a half or whatever each way on the beach.
• 26:07
And they have a really cool course for being on a beach that's just on a barrier island, so. If we're not gonna get a winter, you might as well take part in summer. Right. Yes.
• 26:14
Well, I, I want sand, so I'm gonna have to go somewhere to get it. You know, and, you know, if you're gonna do that, you should come in and either purchase yourself a nice Ti Chumba or- [laughs]...
• 26:27
perhaps, you know, since it's gonna get wet, an aluminum Wyatt. Yeah. Shannon- I do wanna ride the, the medium tonight. Oh, you can, you can ride the Wyatt. I wanna check out- It- Yeah. Do it... you should. Yep.
• 26:37
Shannon got himself- Yes... some fancy new Tan Helgas today, too. Had to get the Tan Helgas. Yeah. Take the- Tan Helga... we'll take the Wyatt out after the show here and, uh, check it out. Um,
• 26:47
I think that it would be a great beach bike. I don't know about with the Wren fork on it, because that seems to me more of a trail thing. Right. Right. But fortunately- But we have other forks...
• 26:56
I don't know if I mentioned this last show, but when I was at Wyatt last week, um, the Wren fork now comes in a 505 axle to crown, which makes it work with the Wyatt geometry really well. Hmm. Is it...
• 27:09
That's not the one that's around the corner here, is it? That's a 490- Okay... which was kind of the- Pretty close... it's not that much different, but it's more what the frame was designed for, so it's- And I think-...
• 27:18
it isn't... didn't they work with Wren to make their carbon fork- Yeah... more- More better... better. More, more- More carbon, more- More carbon-y... size friendly. Carbon si- you know, carbon is pretty cool stuff.
• 27:29
It's like- I was in the model airplane game for a long time, and our carbon planes are some of the most advanced, uh, vehicles out there. They can pull 50 Gs. [laughs] And, like, Indy cars can do six. These do 50 Gs.
• 27:45
So carbon's strong stuff, folks. I, I, I'm not afraid of it no more. I am. [laughs] Well, I mean, I don't know. Well, have you got a carbon seat post or- Yeah I have a post and a set of bars, but I'm not- See?
• 27:57
You love it now. Yeah, you love it now. You suck. I don't know. [laughs] I, I will say- You suck, dude... I, I will say carbon bars,
• 28:05
from a guy that can get some, some bar palsy from time to time, depending on what bike I'm riding, they do make a difference. Um- Anti-vibration-wise? But, but full, full carbon to me is, you know, I mean, bikes are...
• 28:17
I just had this discussion with someone. Steel and aluminum bikes are environmentally friendly. They're forgiving. Especially a steel bike, it'll tell you for months it's about to die.
• 28:29
[laughs] A carbon bike's gonna die, and you're gonna hurt, and I still feel that way. So yeah, you want carbon components? Okay. You want a full carbon bike? Well, then you're a weight weenie. Go home.
• 28:41
[laughs] You're already, you're already drinking the Kool-Aid over there- Yes. Yeah [laughs]... with the carbon bars and the- No, I ain't gonna go. I'll go, I ain't gonna go further than that. [laughs] No.
• 28:51
If I go, i- i- if I can, if I'm gonna go with the money to buy carbon, pardon my French, but fuck that. [laughs] I'm gonna get a goddamn Ti Chumba and have the last bike I'm ever gonna need in my life. Mm-hmm.
• 29:04
So that's the last of them, there on the wall. No, there's some more coming. I think those are the- Oh, the new design... well, there's more coming if we hit the lottery pretty soon. Right. Right.
• 29:12
[laughs] But, but those are- I have to fund the new- I mean-... the next run, so. You, you can't go wrong. I mean, a Ti bike will last you forever. Forever. You know?
• 29:23
Meanwhile, there's still plenty of [laughs] them left here now, so. Yeah, if you need one, we have one. [laughs] And they may be the last ones, who knows? Hmm.
• 29:30
We got some, we got some things to iron out on if we're gonna do another run. But, uh, it's a heck of a bike, folks. You should grab one while they're here, 'cause they may and/or may not come back.
• 29:41
And if they do, they're not- It looks like you got one medium, two larges? Two XLs- And, yeah... one medium, and two smalls are there. Yeah. I may have one other one stashed in the back, but I don't think so. Yeah.
• 29:52
And, you know, they're the shnizzle. They're pretty. Yeah. But, uh, anyway. Eh. Anybody got anything, uh, before we sign off for this week and say goodbye to our listener? Shannon, thoughts? I have nothing.
• 30:07
Not a- Thanks for coming. That's right. Yeah. Yeah. Cheers. Yeah. Cheers. At least, at least the show was interesting this week. Ding, ding. Brian was super- Not just us like, yeah, yeah... quiet over there.
• 30:15
[laughs] You can shout out. Hey, we only got four holes for microphones. We only got four. I caught him, I caught him up here. I'm like, "Yeah, we'll stop for a burger and a beer somewhere," so. Oh, yeah. For sure.
• 30:25
Just hap- happens to be- [laughs]... happens to be- Well, Brew-... literally across the street. I, I, if you wanna go to the, for the best burger- Absolutely... you should head over to Oscar's before you leave town.
• 30:34
I don't even... Are they open this late? Oh, yes. [laughs] Of course they are. Well, right in the neighborhood- But you want a good burger, we're up the street... there's a bunch of them right there. Yeah.
• 30:41
We, we got great stuff in the neighborhood. We'll find something. But, but Oscar's, y- you will, if you've never had an Oscar's burger, it'll blow your doors. I owe Greg that. Yeah. I was on my way to Sodeman's once, and
• 30:51
he said, "Just keep driving." [laughs] Oh, I'm sure he'll be happy with just another beer. Yeah. Who isn't? All righty. Well- Thanks, people... check us out next week, I guess. We'll probably be here or something.
• 31:03
  Something like that.
• 31:05
[upbeat music] We are sorry, but the show has ended.
• 31:44
  Goodbye. [beeping]
