- 0:00Good morning y'all, it's friendly.
- 0:03Hope you are having a wonderful weekend so far.
- 0:06Happy Saturday. Today we are going to be
- 0:09continuing right where Jesus left off after the wedding
- 0:12banquet parable from yesterday. We are moving into a stretch of
- 0:16passages where we see he is constantly being tested by the
- 0:20religious leaders. And before I go straight into
- 0:25reading the scripture this morning, I just want to say we
- 0:30have an active enemy. So as I read through this,
- 0:34remember that Satan is not omnipresent like God is.
- 0:39This means he's everywhere all the time.
- 0:42Satan cannot be in all places at once, so he has to get creative.
- 0:47And he uses people and systems and other voices around us to
- 0:52tempt us and distract us. So this passage really gives us
- 0:57a look at how spiritual warfare can show up.
- 1:01It might not be loud and obvious.
- 1:03It might be subtle, but it's strategic and it's a lot of the
- 1:08times dressed up in very flattering words.
- 1:11So we are going to be in Matthew chapter 22 verses 15 through 22
- 1:18today. Then the Pharisees went out and
- 1:22laid plans to trap him in his words.
- 1:25They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians
- 1:29teacher. They said, we know that you are
- 1:31a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in
- 1:35accordance with the truth. You aren't swayed by others
- 1:39because you pay no attention to who they are.
- 1:41Tell us then, what is your opinion?
- 1:44Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?
- 1:48But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, You hypocrites,
- 1:53why are you trying to trap me? Show me the coin used for paying
- 1:57the tax. They brought him a denarius and
- 2:00he asked them whose image is this and whose inscription
- 2:05Caesar's? They replied.
- 2:07Then he said to them, so give back to Caesar what is Caesar's,
- 2:11and to God what is God's. When they heard this, they were
- 2:15amazed. So they left him and went away.
- 2:20OK, here's what's happening. We've seen the Pharisees in
- 2:25other passages, but they are a religious group and they're
- 2:29Herodians. They're a political party and
- 2:32usually these two groups were opposed to each other, but we
- 2:36see them team up because they shared a goal to trap Jesus and
- 2:41they asked him about paying taxes to Caesar.
- 2:44It's actually a loaded question because if Jesus on one hand
- 2:49says yes, pay the taxes to Caesar, he risks appearing to
- 2:53deny God as the true king and authority.
- 2:56But on the other hand, if he says no, don't pay the taxes,
- 3:01then he could be arrested by Roman authority and for
- 3:05rebelling against Caesar. So on top of that, the Jewish
- 3:09people, they hate paying these taxes because these taxes, their
- 3:14money, it was going into Caesar's treasury and it was
- 3:19funding the Pagan temples for the gods and goddesses.
- 3:22And seeing this Roman coin always reminded them of
- 3:27ultimately their enslavement to Roman rule and authority.
- 3:30So even the coin itself bore Caesar's image and was just
- 3:36jabbing at them for who ruled over them politically.
- 3:40Now, this was not an innocent question.
- 3:42That's the thing. They had calculated this trap.
- 3:46And in verse 15, it says that they tried to entangle him in
- 3:50his words. Y'all, this has to wake us up.
- 3:54We have to be alert to this because we see all throughout
- 3:58Scripture the power of words and the power of the tongue.
- 4:02It says Proverbs 1821 that the tongue has the power of life and
- 4:06death. So I just want y'all to notice
- 4:11how Jesus is also approached. He's approached with flattery.
- 4:17They're like, hey, we know that you are rooted in truth and a
- 4:22man of integrity, but y'all, that's exactly how the enemy
- 4:26works. Think about it.
- 4:28Do you think that Satan is going to come up to you and in your
- 4:32head be like, hey, by the way, I'm about to trap you, I'm about
- 4:35to deceive you uh uh, he sweet talks his way in.
- 4:40He tries to plant doubt. He makes you question what you
- 4:44already know, what you know is good and true, sometimes through
- 4:48your own thoughts, sometimes through people around you.
- 4:51But Jesus was not caught off guard by all of this.
- 4:57Verse 18 says He perceived their wickedness.
- 5:01He knew their evil intent. Why?
- 5:05Because Jesus lived fully aligned with truth.
- 5:09He didn't just know the truth, guys, He is the truth.
- 5:13He is the way the truth and the life and truth guided every
- 5:18response, every teaching, temptation that He faced, every
- 5:22single moment. And here is the good news for us
- 5:27because as believers, Christ lives in us.
- 5:31We also have the Spirit of truth walking with us.
- 5:35Ephesians 617 says that we get to take on the helmet of
- 5:39salvation in the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of
- 5:44God. So God's Word is not just
- 5:48defense, y'all, this is our offense, our offense against the
- 5:52enemy. So I just want to emphasize that
- 5:56learning and memorizing and meditating on Scripture, it
- 6:00matters so much. And I do want to go deeper into
- 6:05just combating the enemy with Scripture and the sword of the
- 6:10Spirit. I want to go more into that in a
- 6:11later episode because it is completely transformed the way
- 6:16that I can recognize deception and lies from the enemy and
- 6:20fight spiritual battles. But I'm going to go into that
- 6:23later. For now, I'm going to continue
- 6:26in talking about just our dual citizenship and ultimate
- 6:30allegiance because Jesus answers in this passage in a way that no
- 6:35one expected. He says give back to Caesar what
- 6:40is Caesar's and to God what is God's.
- 6:43So in first Peter 217 we see where Jesus gets this talking
- 6:50about dual citizenship. It reads show proper respect to
- 6:54everyone, love the family of believers, fear God and honor
- 6:59the emperor. So this highlights we have
- 7:04responsibilities to earthly authorities, y'all We're called
- 7:08to respect and obey. But this also does not mean
- 7:15obeying and contradicting God's word, because our ultimate
- 7:20allegiance belongs to God alone. We are to fear God, so honoring
- 7:25God. It means respecting people
- 7:27because He is the one who appoints the leaders ahead of
- 7:30us. It's all according to His
- 7:32purposes and His perfect plan. It means walking with humility
- 7:38and trusting in His sovereignty. Even if there are leaders that
- 7:43maybe we don't agree with everything they say.
- 7:46We don't compromise our biblical values and standards, but we
- 7:51also submit to their authority in a way to submit to God.
- 7:56So also, I just want to touch on, I think it was so
- 7:59interesting that they're trying to oppose Jesus using money and
- 8:03politics. I feel like that is just so
- 8:07applicable to today because if you think about so many
- 8:10different things that divide the church and the body of Christ,
- 8:14these are two very big ones. And Paul warns us in verse
- 8:19Timothy 610 about money. He says for the love of money is
- 8:24the root of all evil. He's not saying it is evil, but
- 8:28it is the root of all evil because it can blind us and
- 8:31distract us. And so the enemy y'all, like I
- 8:37was talking about earlier, he is constantly trying to take us
- 8:42away from God and divide believers.
- 8:46That's why we have to recognize the areas where Satan wants a
- 8:50foothold. Scripture tells us that we have
- 8:53to pursue peace. We see this in Romans 12/18, and
- 8:57we have to determine not to let the enemy have access.
- 9:01Not through your hearts. Not through voices around you.
- 9:04We have to slam the door shut on his face, pursue truth, submit
- 9:11to God's authority, and choose peace and unity over disharmony
- 9:17and arguing over things that ultimately are pushing us away
- 9:22from uniting as one in Christ. And I want us to also notice the
- 9:27ending. When Jesus answers with this
- 9:31simple truth, they leave. And the enemy, He still does the
- 9:36same today. So when you combat him with what
- 9:40you know to be true from God's Word, he is going to flee.
- 9:45Resist the enemy and He will flee from you as Scripture says.
- 9:49So just a few reflection questions #1 where might the
- 9:54enemy be trying to subtly influence or divide me?
- 9:58Whether that's through thoughts, combos, or outside pressures #2
- 10:05am I actively using God's Word as my offense, or am I only
- 10:10reacting when I feel attacked? And #3 what does it look like
- 10:15for me to honor earthly authority while also keeping my
- 10:18ultimate allegiance fully surrendered to God?
- 10:23So let's move into prayer right now.
- 10:26Dear Lord, thank you for being the God of truth.
- 10:32Lord, we seek you out, and we ask for discernment to recognize
- 10:37the enemy's schemes. We need courage to stand firm in
- 10:42your word. Would you aid us in living with
- 10:46integrity, to walk in wisdom, and to remain rooted in truth
- 10:53when we are tested? Because it's not if we are, but
- 10:57when, and we need your help. God, teach us to pursue peace,
- 11:02to protect unity, especially in the church, and to give you our
- 11:07full allegiance in every aspect of our life.
- 11:11We choose truth today. We choose you.
- 11:15We trust you, we submit to you. We pray this all in your name,
- 11:19God. Amen.
- 11:22OK, well I hope that y'all enjoy this one.
- 11:25I think it was a really important reminder just in our
- 11:28day and age and highlighted a lot of awesome things to me.
- 11:32And I'm just praying for y'all this weekend and I will see
- 11:36y'all on the next episode.
