- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, so doctor Davis is here.
- 0:02Speaker 2: He's a veterinarian and he can answer your vet questions,
- 0:06Speaker 2: your your puppies and your kiddies. What questions do you have?
- 0:09Speaker 2: Call us? But we have here in the studio an
- 0:12Speaker 2: animal that belongs to Gina Barbary.
- 0:15Speaker 3: So I brought Oakley, our new puppy.
- 0:19Speaker 4: That's not a puppy.
- 0:20Speaker 3: She she'll be six months old tomorrow.
- 0:23Speaker 4: That's a full sized dog.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Bigger.
- 0:27Speaker 5: How much bigger do you think she'll get? She's got
- 0:30Speaker 5: some she's got some room to grow.
- 0:31Speaker 6: You can see those big old feet, and she's gonna
- 0:34Speaker 6: be I usually find the goldens. Are they come in
- 0:37Speaker 6: the long linky category or more of the short and stocky?
- 0:40Speaker 6: And I think she's on the stocky side, you know,
- 0:42Speaker 6: got those big thick legs.
- 0:43Speaker 5: But yeah, she's she's a beautiful dog.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Though.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Well, I had Jonesy and my niece Bridget bring her
- 0:49Speaker 3: down today because I wanted I wanted you to talk
- 0:53Speaker 3: to her in person.
- 0:56Speaker 1: To the dog.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Well, Oakley, Well, let's not get mixed up.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Oakley is the dog.
- 1:03Speaker 7: The dog.
- 1:06Speaker 3: I'm embarrassed to say what our problem is, Doctor Davis.
- 1:09Speaker 5: Hey, don't be embarrassed.
- 1:10Speaker 3: What is it she has she's been caught eating her
- 1:14Speaker 3: sister's poop.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Oh, well it's not a real sister. Yeah, that's okay,
- 1:22Speaker 1: that makes it okay.
- 1:23Speaker 3: But I thought maybe if she talked to doctor Davis
- 1:26Speaker 3: in person, you can talk and I.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Let that dog lick me.
- 1:31Speaker 6: Yeah for that, which is why you don't there's always
- 1:37Speaker 6: something it.
- 1:38Speaker 5: Is it bad?
- 1:39Speaker 4: And how can we stop it?
- 1:41Speaker 6: Yeah? Definitely in a perfect world, we don't want to
- 1:44Speaker 6: have that going on. Just with all the bacteria they
- 1:47Speaker 6: can ingest, you know, that's never good for them to
- 1:49Speaker 6: be doing that really over time, if they do it
- 1:51Speaker 6: long term, it can affect their teeth and oral health too.
- 1:55Speaker 6: But also parasites. Of course, if there's parasites that they're carrying,
- 1:59Speaker 6: they can toue those life cycles.
- 2:01Speaker 5: Here, that parasite, that's that could be the tricky part.
- 2:06Speaker 6: So one for sure, as I make sure all your
- 2:08Speaker 6: dogs around good monthly parasite control.
- 2:10Speaker 5: That's super important for these And they.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Should change the diet of the other dog so that
- 2:14Speaker 2: it poop's something that's really it's less tasty.
- 2:18Speaker 5: Yeah, and there.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Are cabbage is that okay?
- 2:21Speaker 6: There are some Sometimes those types of things can work.
- 2:25Speaker 6: There's also a product it's we use. It's called Forbid basically, yeah,
- 2:30Speaker 6: I mean you feed it, put it in the dog's food,
- 2:32Speaker 6: and the ideas that it makes the poop not tasty,
- 2:35Speaker 6: which you know it shouldn't be tasty anyway, you wouldn't
- 2:37Speaker 6: think candies. And then just good at home, you know,
- 2:42Speaker 6: cleaning up immediately when they go out and go to
- 2:44Speaker 6: the bathroom, keeping the yard really clean, and things like that.
- 2:46Speaker 5: And I would say a majority of dogs outgrow that.
- 2:49Speaker 6: We often see this in young puppies because they're they're
- 2:53Speaker 6: just puppies trying to figure out the world. But we
- 2:56Speaker 6: do want to curb that as much as possible because
- 2:59Speaker 6: they're can be health risks with that. For that dog
- 3:02Speaker 6: is sweet and stupid, Yeah, classic golden you know, but
- 3:06Speaker 6: they're they're great dogs. And and hopefully if you just keep
- 3:09Speaker 6: up on that and keep that behavior moving in another direction, you'll.
- 3:12Speaker 1: She'll get through.
- 3:13Speaker 2: I think what's happening is doctor Davids is saying your
- 3:16Speaker 2: yard is full of poop, so.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Clean go home and do do a dog poop clean
- 3:21Speaker 3: up when you get home.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Thanks, mom, Want Want you're.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Back from college?
- 3:27Speaker 2: Yeah, eight seven six oh two nine six nine six
- 3:32Speaker 2: that's the number to call.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Get some forbid. Gina forbid forbid.
- 3:35Speaker 6: Yeah, give that a shot. And if that doesn't work,
- 3:37Speaker 6: there's other other things that can be tried. But that's
- 3:39Speaker 6: a good place to start.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Okay, well forbid, I forbid you to forbid anymore?
- 3:44Speaker 8: Eight seven seven six oh two nine six nine six
- 3:47Speaker 8: is the number to call to talk to.
- 3:50Speaker 1: What is ok What is Oakley? Wait till your backsturn?
- 3:54Speaker 5: I'm going I think so.
- 3:55Speaker 4: I know I'm not supposed to. That's not looking, doctor
- 3:59Speaker 4: Josh Davis.
- 4:00Speaker 5: Some dogs take it as it's coming out.
- 4:04Speaker 1: I don't. I don't even need to.
- 4:08Speaker 5: Don't picture that.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Sorry, people are having breakfast right now.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Rob is here, Hello, Rob.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Hi Rob. What's what's your question for? Doctor Davis? What's
- 4:17Speaker 2: your dog's name?
- 4:19Speaker 1: Hey, good morning.
- 4:20Speaker 9: I have an Australian shepherd named Kona. He's six years old,
- 4:26Speaker 9: but he's always had He gets super anxious when the
- 4:30Speaker 9: wind blows like anything about ten or so miles per hour,
- 4:35Speaker 9: starts going outside and he just gets really nervous and
- 4:39Speaker 9: wants to go hide. I was just wondering if there's
- 4:43Speaker 9: any over the counter type of medications or anything like
- 4:47Speaker 9: that that might help that they're aware of, or if
- 4:50Speaker 9: I should take a man of trying to get a
- 4:51Speaker 9: prescriptive of stuff sort or.
- 4:53Speaker 1: What do you take carry.
- 4:56Speaker 8: There's some dogs CBD that's available, but I let's see
- 4:59Speaker 8: what the doctor has to say.
- 5:01Speaker 6: Yeah, there are those types of situations can be tough
- 5:04Speaker 6: because the certain phobia is one of the common ones.
- 5:07Speaker 6: Is like fireworks and loud noises and things like that,
- 5:09Speaker 6: and some dogs it's other things like wind or whatever
- 5:12Speaker 6: you might have. So there are I mean, you always
- 5:15Speaker 6: want to try and work on counter conditioning them over time,
- 5:18Speaker 6: trying to get them used to those environments where they
- 5:20Speaker 6: feel safer with that, and sometimes personal dog training can
- 5:23Speaker 6: help with that. Over the counter stuff. So CBD is
- 5:27Speaker 6: becoming more popular, and I say, as long as you
- 5:31Speaker 6: try to get it from a reputable source, you know,
- 5:33Speaker 6: and I think there can be some benefit to that.
- 5:36Speaker 6: But there's you know, there's still ongoing studies and things
- 5:38Speaker 6: like that. But there's also calming like probiotics, supplements. There
- 5:43Speaker 6: are other just over the counter things you can get
- 5:46Speaker 6: to help with that.
- 5:46Speaker 8: Now, when I first saw this product, I thought it
- 5:49Speaker 8: was a joke, but it really works.
- 5:51Speaker 4: And that's the thunder shirt.
- 5:52Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, yeah, thundershirts.
- 5:53Speaker 4: Thundershirt is it was like a hug.
- 5:57Speaker 8: It's like a straight jacket kind of, but your arms
- 6:00Speaker 8: are free, you know, and you wrap it's like a
- 6:02Speaker 8: big hug around the dog's chest and they'll crow it
- 6:06Speaker 8: tight and it calms them down. We had a problem
- 6:10Speaker 8: with Ripley for a bit, and just calmed you right down.
- 6:13Speaker 8: And then you don't eventually you don't have to use
- 6:16Speaker 8: it eventually.
- 6:17Speaker 6: Yeah, that's the perfect world, that's the idea. But yeah,
- 6:20Speaker 6: and the thundershirt falls into those categories of non medical
- 6:23Speaker 6: therapy for sure, and some dogs really benefit from that.
- 6:25Speaker 6: And then some of the other supplements and other calming
- 6:28Speaker 6: things out there, and most of them shouldn't be harmful
- 6:31Speaker 6: if you give them as as directed and everything. And
- 6:33Speaker 6: then for more serious cases or if they're causing harm
- 6:37Speaker 6: to themselves or harms to things in the environment, then
- 6:40Speaker 6: that's where medical therapy along with behavior training can become
- 6:44Speaker 6: a thing.
- 6:44Speaker 5: But I don't think you have to start there always.
- 6:46Speaker 2: I'm just curious, Rob, how you know that your Australian
- 6:50Speaker 2: shepherd is full of anxiety. It seems to me those
- 6:53Speaker 2: dogs never stop.
- 6:54Speaker 5: Then do you never stop?
- 6:55Speaker 1: Usually? All right?
- 6:57Speaker 4: Thanks Rob.
- 7:00Speaker 1: After Josh Davis, you're a certified vet. Right, so I
- 7:03Speaker 1: went to school.
- 7:03Speaker 5: I did go to school for a very long time.
- 7:06Speaker 1: I could see I could see your degree. Would you
- 7:08Speaker 1: bring it in next time? We just want to make
- 7:10Speaker 1: you could probably dig it up.
- 7:11Speaker 5: Yeah, he's got scrubs on.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Isn't that enough?
- 7:13Speaker 6: If you go to the Doppel site. I have my
- 7:16Speaker 6: licenses on the Doppel cell. Anyone can go look at it.
- 7:19Speaker 2: You know eight seven seven six oh two nine six
- 7:22Speaker 2: nine six. He's a real vet, not some actor we've hired. Oh,
- 7:26Speaker 2: call and ask your question.
- 7:27Speaker 1: We do have.
- 7:28Speaker 8: Some people are giving tips on how to get your
- 7:31Speaker 8: dog to stop eating poop.
- 7:33Speaker 5: Oh good, there's probably a million out there. You know.
- 7:36Speaker 8: This is just cook up the food with some eggs
- 7:39Speaker 8: and feed it to them. It makes their poop taste nasty. Really,
- 7:42Speaker 8: I wouldn't think so.
- 7:44Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Our old Doug Brownie loved it.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Well, I don't know. I think I think this person
- 7:49Speaker 1: has actually tasted it.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Yeah, and again people are saying pineapple okay.
- 7:56Speaker 6: And forbid or too that are more popular than I've
- 7:59Speaker 6: you've heard.
- 8:00Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, let's see question for the good doctor. I
- 8:05Speaker 8: have a black tom cat hades or it says a
- 8:09Speaker 8: black tom. I'm guessing it's a cat. Yeah, but it
- 8:11Speaker 8: says it's twenty pounds, very large, big feet. He's only
- 8:15Speaker 8: seven months old. Is he going to get bigger?
- 8:19Speaker 6: That seems that just seems crazy to be twenty pounds
- 8:24Speaker 6: at seven months old. Depending on the type of breeds,
- 8:26Speaker 6: I mean, some of the breeds, like the main coons,
- 8:28Speaker 6: are a few savannah cats and things like that can
- 8:30Speaker 6: be quite large. But that that seems very big for
- 8:32Speaker 6: seven Let's make.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Sure it's a cat extra Yeah, yeah, because.
- 8:36Speaker 5: It's probably a cat if they're saying tom.
- 8:37Speaker 6: But but yeah, I would do hopefully that growth is
- 8:41Speaker 6: normal and not overweight or obesity, because that would be
- 8:44Speaker 6: a huge problem in it.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Yeah that yet?
- 8:45Speaker 4: Or maybe he's more than seven months old and you
- 8:48Speaker 4: were told wrong? Yeah, I don't know.
- 8:51Speaker 8: I lost one of my dogs to cancer two weeks ago.
- 8:53Speaker 8: My remaining dog is despondent and depressed. In her seven years,
- 8:57Speaker 8: she's never been alone.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Do you have any advice? How long will it take
- 9:00Speaker 4: her to feel better? Will she be okay alone?
- 9:04Speaker 6: Those are all difficult questions because it really is based
- 9:07Speaker 6: on the dog, and often we hear that. As you know,
- 9:10Speaker 6: dogs they bond well together if they get along, and
- 9:14Speaker 6: then you change that that whole setup just overnight to them,
- 9:18Speaker 6: and so some dogs it can take months and months.
- 9:20Speaker 5: Some dogs they just are never seem to be quite
- 9:22Speaker 5: the same.
- 9:23Speaker 6: But I think the more you get them into a
- 9:25Speaker 6: normal their normal routine as much as possible, you know.
- 9:29Speaker 6: I think it's a lot like people is. The more
- 9:31Speaker 6: they can just sit around and dwell on it and
- 9:33Speaker 6: not be active, I think that affects them more for sure.
- 9:36Speaker 5: And then some people get another dog.
- 9:38Speaker 6: There's always the risks to that, but some dogs really
- 9:41Speaker 6: do benefit from that if they get along too.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Liz is on the phone.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Yes, Liz, Hello, Hi, Liz, what what's your dog's name?
- 9:50Speaker 7: Her name is Kicks Feet okay, and she's a mini
- 9:54Speaker 7: poodle and she gets your infections like all the and
- 10:01Speaker 7: it's the same mirror infection. It kind of smells like
- 10:03Speaker 7: dirty feet, and it smells like everywhere, but it always
- 10:08Speaker 7: seems like it's the same thing. After she has a
- 10:11Speaker 7: bath or if she's gotten in the pool and I
- 10:13Speaker 7: try to keep her ears really cleaned out and you know,
- 10:17Speaker 7: dry them off, but it seems to keep happening. And
- 10:20Speaker 7: I'm trying to figure out what a good way would
- 10:23Speaker 7: be to treat that without having to go to the
- 10:25Speaker 7: vet every time, and by the earring medicine right what show.
- 10:30Speaker 1: You, doctor Davis?
- 10:32Speaker 5: Yeah, that situation.
- 10:34Speaker 6: Anytime you have dogs and water with their ears, so bathing, swimming, rain, snow,
- 10:39Speaker 6: that does put them at risk for infections. And you
- 10:42Speaker 6: know the stinky feet infection is often yeast, but sometimes
- 10:46Speaker 6: they can get vecteria, and the more infections they have
- 10:49Speaker 6: over times, the more chance of resistance, which will cause
- 10:52Speaker 6: a lot of difficulty getting them resolved. So you know,
- 10:56Speaker 6: doing what you're doing, I would make sure you have
- 10:58Speaker 6: a really good cleaner that can help with like breaking
- 11:01Speaker 6: down that stuff and helping dry the ears out after swimming, and.
- 11:05Speaker 5: Then also make sure too.
- 11:07Speaker 6: Ears are almost always secondary to other problems, so water
- 11:11Speaker 6: could be one, but also if there's any skin allergies
- 11:13Speaker 6: or problems that way, then they're more prone to your
- 11:16Speaker 6: infections too. So you know, you never want to fully
- 11:19Speaker 6: cut out the vet and try to treat these things
- 11:21Speaker 6: because I've seen people do wacky things in the ears
- 11:24Speaker 6: and you can make the problem much worse if you're.
- 11:26Speaker 5: Not having good guidance at least, if ever really cares.
- 11:29Speaker 7: Yeah, all right, Yeah, I've actually tried other cleaners. So
- 11:33Speaker 7: do you recommend any type of cleaners because there's so
- 11:38Speaker 7: many out there?
- 11:40Speaker 5: Yeah, there is.
- 11:40Speaker 6: It can be really overwhelming with all the things out there,
- 11:43Speaker 6: but just typically a good one that's got a good
- 11:46Speaker 6: just drying agent built into it, and they'll usually tell
- 11:49Speaker 6: you on the label for that, and then just making
- 11:51Speaker 6: sure that don't use Q tips cotton balls for safety,
- 11:54Speaker 6: and just make sure that you're doing it thorough. There's
- 11:57Speaker 6: good videos on YouTube how to do proper ear cleaning
- 11:59Speaker 6: and medicare to.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Okay, there you go.
- 12:01Speaker 6: Yeah, there's there's lots of products, but you know, it's
- 12:04Speaker 6: never heard to ask your vat too if what they carry,
- 12:07Speaker 6: because everyone carries a little bit different stuff.
- 12:08Speaker 4: All right, all right, thanks, Yeah, okay, let's go.
- 12:12Speaker 1: To kirk Kirk. What's up?
- 12:15Speaker 3: Oh?
- 12:16Speaker 10: Hell, just hanging out all Hell's all?
- 12:19Speaker 1: Hells? Well, what what's your question for the doctor?
- 12:23Speaker 10: I've got a lab he's about six years old, and
- 12:26Speaker 10: I leave him home in the house's.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Name and I go to work. What's his name?
- 12:29Speaker 10: Gauge? Gauge, Okay, his name's Gage. All right, anyway, I'll
- 12:33Speaker 10: watch him on the cameras from work, and he'll sit
- 12:37Speaker 10: there and how I don't know if it's an anxiety
- 12:40Speaker 10: deal or what, but he'll sit there and how he'll
- 12:42Speaker 10: climb on the counters, throw himself off the counters, and
- 12:46Speaker 10: just just not have a good day.
- 12:48Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Is that every days like that?
- 12:51Speaker 10: Yeah? Pretty much every day.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:54Speaker 6: That does probably fall into the more of that separation
- 12:58Speaker 6: anxiety category for sure. And they can cause self harm
- 13:03Speaker 6: or harm to the environment. And I've seen dogs that,
- 13:05Speaker 6: I mean, they'll chew through walls, they'll chew through doors
- 13:07Speaker 6: and chew up furniture and stuff, and so it does
- 13:10Speaker 6: sound like you're into that category. And there some people
- 13:14Speaker 6: will do simple things, so things like the thundershirts or
- 13:18Speaker 6: other calming modalities, supplements, things like that can help. Leaving music,
- 13:23Speaker 6: on leaving a TV, on leaving something on to make
- 13:26Speaker 6: some noise kind of just to have them.
- 13:28Speaker 5: Feel like something's going on.
- 13:30Speaker 6: Also, considering behavior training in home, behavior training might be
- 13:35Speaker 6: a good tool to help with that. And then again
- 13:37Speaker 6: in the more extreme behavior cases, sometimes medical therapy along
- 13:41Speaker 6: with those other things will help. Because separation anxiety is
- 13:44Speaker 6: one of the big ones that dogs can experience and
- 13:48Speaker 6: you never want that long term if you can help it, if.
- 13:51Speaker 8: You leave X ninety six on, you'll get your doggle
- 13:54Speaker 8: here already singing.
- 13:55Speaker 4: There you go party singing about cats to it.
- 13:58Speaker 10: Try that all right, definitely try that?
- 14:02Speaker 1: All right, thank you, thank you.
- 14:05Speaker 8: Let's see if we got one more text question here.
- 14:10Speaker 8: A lot of them are just training, not really medical.
- 14:14Speaker 8: Let's see, I just got a husky puppy. He is
- 14:16Speaker 8: six months old. When would be the best time to
- 14:18Speaker 8: get him neutered.
- 14:20Speaker 5: For the huskies?
- 14:22Speaker 6: And again there's a lot of controversy about this with dogs,
- 14:25Speaker 6: and not a lot of like true hard data yet.
- 14:28Speaker 6: But for bigger breed dogs, I usually like to wait
- 14:31Speaker 6: till at least like eight months to a year for
- 14:34Speaker 6: their neuters because they can get more of their growth
- 14:37Speaker 6: and bone development. The trade off those behavior wise they
- 14:41Speaker 6: may start having the marking behaviors, and also when they're
- 14:46Speaker 6: not neutered yet, they have a higher chance of getting
- 14:49Speaker 6: out and running away, which usually leads to getting hit
- 14:52Speaker 6: by cars in some situations, or unwanted pregnancies for other
- 14:55Speaker 6: pet owners.
- 14:55Speaker 5: So there's always trade offs with that.
- 14:57Speaker 3: But and then for spaying, I know there's some controversy
- 15:01Speaker 3: of do you wait for them to have a cycle before.
- 15:04Speaker 5: You do it after the same kind of thing.
- 15:06Speaker 6: Yeah, and there are benefits both ways.
- 15:09Speaker 5: So previous to heat.
- 15:11Speaker 6: Cycles, there are some benefits for certain types of cancers
- 15:14Speaker 6: as they get older, also unwanted pregnancies and dogs as
- 15:19Speaker 6: the heat cycle and as they get older or are
- 15:21Speaker 6: prone to what's called biometri which is an infection in
- 15:24Speaker 6: the uterus, they often require surgery to fix that.
- 15:28Speaker 5: So if you're not breeding, you know there's do it.
- 15:31Speaker 1: You know you can't.
- 15:32Speaker 6: I won't ever tell people what to do, but the
- 15:34Speaker 6: pros and cons of that for sure. And so smaller
- 15:36Speaker 6: breeds will usually spay them around six seven months before
- 15:39Speaker 6: they have their heat cycles, but larger breeds some some
- 15:43Speaker 6: lines and some breeds it does show to wait a
- 15:45Speaker 6: little bit for development and growth and things like.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Well, having pets is worse than having kids.
- 15:51Speaker 5: I'd say, just as challenging.
- 15:52Speaker 1: They can't talk to you, lord ignore your kids.
- 15:55Speaker 5: Yeah, you could leave.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Your kids home, leave your dog home, just leaving home
