- 5:13Speaker 4: I do pray and I quote for this week a man,
- 5:26Speaker 4: there will come a day, I promise you when the
- 5:30Speaker 4: thoughts of your loved one brings a smile to your
- 5:35Speaker 4: lips before it brings a tear to your eye. By
- 5:41Speaker 4: for ex President former President Joe Biden Grief. We are
- 5:49Speaker 4: starting a series on grief and going through each of
- 5:58Speaker 4: the stages of grief one by one. Understanding stage one denial.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Denial is often the first response to the loss of
- 6:19Speaker 4: a loved one, a relationship, a job, a body part,
- 6:26Speaker 4: anything that you are grieving over. The first stage is denial.
- 6:36Speaker 4: You will deny that this is happening. I don't believe
- 6:41Speaker 4: that this is happening. I don't believe that I'm burying
- 6:45Speaker 4: this person. I don't believe that my long lasting relationship
- 6:51Speaker 4: is over. I don't believe that he just walked away.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Whether the loss involves the death of a loved one,
- 6:59Speaker 4: a divorce, a serious illness, the loss of a job,
- 7:04Speaker 4: or another major life change, denial acts as a temporary
- 7:09Speaker 4: emotional buffer. It helps the mind absorb painful information gradually
- 7:17Speaker 4: rather than all at once. Denial is not necessarily refusing
- 7:25Speaker 4: to believe that a loss has occurred. More often, it
- 7:30Speaker 4: is struggling to fully grasp the impact of the loss.
- 7:36Speaker 4: A person may intelligence know what happened, but not yet
- 7:42Speaker 4: emotionally accepted. I remember when my son passed away, and
- 7:54Speaker 4: for weeks I was saying, I don't believe this is happening.
- 7:58Speaker 4: I don't believe that. Rather than seeing my son graduate
- 8:03Speaker 4: from college, I'm planning a funeral. He's not gonna be
- 8:08Speaker 4: here anymore, his room is empty, and knowing intelligently that
- 8:16Speaker 4: he was no longer here, but somehow denying that I
- 8:25Speaker 4: was going through that as a matter of fact as
- 8:28Speaker 4: a way of coping with somebody dear to me that
- 8:31Speaker 4: passed away. But I only saw them a few times
- 8:36Speaker 4: a year. I had my mind convinced that they're not dead,
- 8:42Speaker 4: they just away. And when I finally accepted the fact
- 8:49Speaker 4: that they were dead and not just at their home
- 8:52Speaker 4: waiting for their annual visits, it then I was able
- 8:57Speaker 4: to emotionally accept the fact that they were going. Some
- 9:03Speaker 4: common signs that you are in denial, feeling numb or
- 9:11Speaker 4: emotionally detached, acting as though nothing has changed, avoid discussions
- 9:20Speaker 4: about the loss. I know in the beginning, I couldn't
- 9:24Speaker 4: even mention my son's name. I couldn't look at any
- 9:28Speaker 4: of his pictures. Keep once acceptively busy to avoid thinking
- 9:36Speaker 4: about the loss. And that's one of the reasons why
- 9:40Speaker 4: I had an indefinite leave because it was my child.
- 9:44Speaker 4: But a couple of days after the funeral, I went
- 9:49Speaker 4: back to work. I couldn't just sit home and have
- 9:54Speaker 4: to think. But working with kids, you can't spend the
- 9:58Speaker 4: whole day being sad. You can't spend the whole day crying.
- 10:03Speaker 4: They would do something to make you, at least for
- 10:06Speaker 4: a moment, forget what you're going through. So I went
- 10:09Speaker 4: right back to work. Excuuse me, rememberaby memorizing the significance
- 10:17Speaker 4: of the laws expecting the deceased person to walk through
- 10:23Speaker 4: the door. You know how many times did I looked
- 10:27Speaker 4: towards the door, hoping that he was gonna walk through
- 10:31Speaker 4: it when I had to move out of my house,
- 10:35Speaker 4: Because every time I walked past his room, his final
- 10:43Speaker 4: hours played over and over in my head. It was
- 10:47Speaker 4: like it was on repeat and I couldn't turn it off.
- 10:50Speaker 4: It just kept playing, feeling as if the situation is
- 10:56Speaker 4: unreal or dream like when you lost some one. How
- 11:00Speaker 4: many of us have thought this must be a dream,
- 11:04Speaker 4: This can't be happening. I must be in a dream.
- 11:08Speaker 4: Let me wake up out of this nightmare. But the
- 11:10Speaker 4: next day, when you wake up, there's still your reality
- 11:16Speaker 4: that they're not here. What is the purpose of denial?
- 11:21Speaker 4: Denial serves a protective function. God designed the human mind
- 11:28Speaker 4: with the ability to process overwhelming experience in stages. Denial
- 11:35Speaker 4: allows a gredium person to face reality and manageable portion.
- 11:41Speaker 4: Think of denial as a shock azorba. It cushions the
- 11:45Speaker 4: immediate impact of the loss and tell the person is
- 11:50Speaker 4: strong enough to accept the loss. Or the process their
- 11:56Speaker 4: deep feelings, and some people. First we have to understand
- 12:03Speaker 4: that there are five stages of grief, but you don't
- 12:07Speaker 4: go through the five stages straight in a line. And
- 12:11Speaker 4: then you finally at acceptance and your life goes on.
- 12:16Speaker 4: You fuctuate between the stages. I found myself functuating between
- 12:23Speaker 4: the last stage acceptance. Though you know he's going this
- 12:28Speaker 4: is God's plan, is nothing I can do about it,
- 12:31Speaker 4: And the next day I would wake up and denial again.
- 12:34Speaker 4: I must be in a dream. This can't be happening,
- 12:38Speaker 4: so it doesn't go on the line. And that's one
- 12:40Speaker 4: thing that I learned in therapy is that grief doesn't
- 12:45Speaker 4: come with an expiration date.
- 12:48Speaker 1: That is.
- 12:50Speaker 4: No way to determine which way you're gonna go, what
- 12:56Speaker 4: stages you're gonna be in, what you're gonna act react
- 13:02Speaker 4: to it. There's no set hand. But yes, there's books
- 13:07Speaker 4: on how to deal with grief, there's books on what
- 13:11Speaker 4: is grief, but your own grief is personal. Each person
- 13:16Speaker 4: doesn't go through it the same way. I might not
- 13:21Speaker 4: go through my grief the same way that you do.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Like I have a friend who lost her daughter and
- 13:28Speaker 4: her way of dealing with grief is she goes to
- 13:32Speaker 4: the cemetery every single day they have They still have
- 13:37Speaker 4: birthday parties for her, and that's how they deal with
- 13:41Speaker 4: their grief. I have not went back to the cemetery
- 13:49Speaker 4: since my son has been buried. My family really goes
- 13:56Speaker 4: and put flowers on it. But the reality is I
- 14:03Speaker 4: just don't want to see him like that. I know
- 14:06Speaker 4: that his body is not there, that he's in Heaven.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Rejoice him and with God, and if he had a
- 14:12Speaker 4: chance to come back, he wouldn't come back. While denial
- 14:17Speaker 4: is normal and healthy for a season, remaining in denial
- 14:22Speaker 4: for a tended period of time can interfere with you're healing.
- 14:29Speaker 4: Emotional numbness persists, persists, difficult experienced joy or sadness, increase
- 14:38Speaker 4: anxiety and depression, unresolved grief. Behavior of effects refusing to
- 14:45Speaker 4: talk about the loss, avoiding people, places, or memories connected
- 14:52Speaker 4: to the laws, a sessive work, entertainment, or other distractions,
- 14:59Speaker 4: difficult making necessary life adjustments. The spiritual effects. You feel
- 15:07Speaker 4: distant from God, you avoid prayer or worship. You questioned
- 15:14Speaker 4: God's goodness. Without processing these questions, you become spiritually stagnant.
- 15:24Speaker 4: Your relationship be begged you withdraw from family and friends.
- 15:28Speaker 4: And I know that while I was going through the denial,
- 15:34Speaker 4: I couldn't associate with my friends because we had a
- 15:39Speaker 4: friend group and we all had one or two children
- 15:42Speaker 4: each and we did everything together. We did everything with
- 15:47Speaker 4: our children. So now they're going places and they're going
- 15:52Speaker 4: with their child or children, and I didn't have a child,
- 15:58Speaker 4: so I felt like I wasn't a part of it.
- 16:01Speaker 4: I felt like a third will, so in the beginning
- 16:06Speaker 4: I couldn't go anywhere with them. Isolation increased conflict with
- 16:13Speaker 4: loved ones who are grieving differently. While grave, when grief
- 16:19Speaker 4: remains unresolved, it became become what counselors call complicate complicated
- 16:25Speaker 4: grief with a person struggles to move forward and remains
- 16:31Speaker 4: emotionally trapped by the loss. Tools for navigating the denial
- 16:38Speaker 4: stage one, you have to acknowledge a knowledge reality gradually
- 16:45Speaker 4: allow yourself to speak honestly about the loss. Example, my
- 16:52Speaker 4: spouse has died, my child has died. I lost my job,
- 16:59Speaker 4: I had a stroke, and I lost the right side
- 17:03Speaker 4: of my body. This relationship has ended. Naming the loss
- 17:10Speaker 4: is an important step towards healing. To journal your thoughts.
- 17:16Speaker 4: Writing can help bring hidden emotions to the surface. That's
- 17:22Speaker 4: how I first became a writer. That I started writing
- 17:28Speaker 4: the book from the waiting room to the recovery room.
- 17:33Speaker 4: When the doctor came out into the waiting room and said,
- 17:38Speaker 4: we did all we could do, he didn't make it.
- 17:42Speaker 4: And I began journaling my thoughts in that book and
- 17:48Speaker 4: just writing, writing, writing, writing, And I'm finally at the
- 17:54Speaker 4: stage where I'm going to write another the book specifically
- 18:02Speaker 4: on my grief and how I navigated through my grief,
- 18:10Speaker 4: how it still appears now and then. But I'm not stagnant.
- 18:15Speaker 4: I can talk about my son, I can laugh at
- 18:18Speaker 4: his memories, that it doesn't hurt anymore, to look at
- 18:22Speaker 4: his pictures, or talk about the funny things that he
- 18:28Speaker 4: said and did. Questions to journal when you're a journal
- 18:34Speaker 4: and you're right, what happened? How has my life changed?
- 18:41Speaker 4: What emotions am I avoiding? What do I fear most?
- 18:46Speaker 4: Right now? Three? Share your story. Talk with trusted friends,
- 18:53Speaker 4: family members, pastors, or counselors. Every time you tell your story,
- 19:00Speaker 4: your mind processes the reality of the loss more completely.
- 19:10Speaker 4: Read and meditate on scripture. God's word provides comfort and perspective.
- 19:17Speaker 4: Some helpful scriptures that you can write down Psalms thirty four,
- 19:25Speaker 4: Psalms forty two, Psalms forty six, Isaiah forty one and ten,
- 19:34Speaker 4: Matthew five and four, John fourteen one to three, Romans eight,
- 19:45Speaker 4: twenty eight to twenty nine five. Retain retain healthy routines.
- 19:52Speaker 4: Grief can make life more chaotic. Simple routines help create stability.
- 19:59Speaker 4: Eat new trice his meals, get enough sleep, exercise regilarly,
- 20:06Speaker 4: attend church, maintain your social connection, pray honestly. God is
- 20:15Speaker 4: not intimidated by your grief. The Lord didn't take God
- 20:20Speaker 4: by surprise. It might have took you by surprise, but
- 20:23Speaker 4: God already knew, like David in the Psalms, Express your
- 20:30Speaker 4: true feelings. If you feel confused, say God, I'm confused.
- 20:36Speaker 4: If you're sad, say God, I'm sad. If you're angry,
- 20:42Speaker 4: say God, I'm angry. If you're scared, say God, I'm scared.
- 20:49Speaker 4: If you doubt, say God, I doubt. God welcomes your honesty.
- 20:57Speaker 4: Seek professional help if needed. And this is one of
- 21:02Speaker 4: the most important stages because in the African American community
- 21:07Speaker 4: and church, mental health is considered taboo that if you
- 21:14Speaker 4: love God hard enough, if you pray hard enough, that
- 21:19Speaker 4: you'll get over it. But sometimes you need to talk
- 21:22Speaker 4: to somebody that's equipped. We're dealing with grief, and they
- 21:27Speaker 4: know what you're going through and how to navigate you
- 21:30Speaker 4: through this loss. They're a biblical example the Disciples after
- 21:37Speaker 4: the Crucifixion. Following Jesus' death, the Disciples experience shock and confusion.
- 21:45Speaker 4: They hear in fear and struggle to understand what had happened.
- 21:53Speaker 4: Even though Jesus had foretold his death and resurrection, they
- 21:59Speaker 4: found it difficult to accept reality. When Jesus appeared to them,
- 22:07Speaker 4: he patiently helped them move from disbelief to faith. This
- 22:13Speaker 4: reminds us that God meets us in our confusion and
- 22:19Speaker 4: gently leads us towards healing and understanding. God knows what
- 22:26Speaker 4: we're going through. God knows what we feel, the grief,
- 22:32Speaker 4: the sadness. God understands, and he just wants us to
- 22:38Speaker 4: come to him and be honest with him and tell
- 22:42Speaker 4: him how you're feeling. Only for a night, but joy
- 23:05Speaker 4: is gonna come in the morning. So denial is the
- 23:13Speaker 4: first stage of grief. For the next four weeks, we
- 23:21Speaker 4: are going to be discussing the stages of grief, and
- 23:28Speaker 4: all of this leads to my introduction of my coaching program,
- 23:35Speaker 4: my SIDTI Grief coaching program that I am going to
- 23:43Speaker 4: be launching in September to help people deal with their grief.
- 23:50Speaker 4: As you know my life story and I've shared it
- 23:52Speaker 4: with you many many times before that I lost my son.
- 24:00Speaker 4: I went through a fire, so I know about losing
- 24:05Speaker 4: a house, losing your comfortability. I went through a divorce,
- 24:09Speaker 4: so I can tell you about losing a relationship and
- 24:14Speaker 4: going through the emotions and the emotions of dealing with
- 24:20Speaker 4: an ending relationship, one that you thought was gonna last forever,
- 24:27Speaker 4: but forever it wasn't meant to last forever. And having
- 24:34Speaker 4: a major stroke and losing the right side of my body.
- 24:41Speaker 4: So I can tell you about losing a body part,
- 24:47Speaker 4: the use of a body part, and how to embrace
- 24:52Speaker 4: the things that you can still do and accept the
- 24:57Speaker 4: things that you can That's all a part of grief
- 25:04Speaker 4: that you thank God for the things that you can
- 25:06Speaker 4: still do. I think God, then I can still use
- 25:10Speaker 4: my voice. I thank God that I can still tell
- 25:15Speaker 4: about His goodness of Some people don't want to hear
- 25:19Speaker 4: me talk about the goodness of God because of the
- 25:22Speaker 4: condition that I'm in. But I think what is the
- 25:26Speaker 4: best time to talk about your faith and your trust
- 25:30Speaker 4: in God is when you're going through It's easy to
- 25:33Speaker 4: say I love God when you're not going through grief.
- 25:36Speaker 4: I love God. When your money is right, I thank
- 25:39Speaker 4: you Jesus, when your kids are acting right. It's easy
- 25:43Speaker 4: to talk about the goodness of God. Then, But what
- 25:46Speaker 4: about when you're laying on your back? What about when
- 25:50Speaker 4: you can't still do the things that you used to do?
- 25:53Speaker 4: Could you still give God glory? Then? Can you still
- 25:56Speaker 4: love God? Praise you? See? I chose to worryship God
- 26:00Speaker 4: in whatever condition that I am, and I chose to
- 26:05Speaker 4: worship God. Hallelujah, Glory be to God. Don't give up
- 26:10Speaker 4: hallelujah just because you going through a low, say man,
- 26:14Speaker 4: just because life isn't looking the way that you planned it, hallelujah,
- 26:19Speaker 4: just because grief has been in every season of your
- 26:24Speaker 4: life so far, don't give up hallelujah because God still
- 26:28Speaker 4: has a plan and a purpose for your life. God
- 26:31Speaker 4: had a purpose for my grief. I couldn't be able
- 26:34Speaker 4: to tell you that you could survive the depth of
- 26:37Speaker 4: a child that you can stand in a cemetery and
- 26:39Speaker 4: see them lower his body into the ground and not
- 26:43Speaker 4: go crazy. That you can lose a house and be
- 26:46Speaker 4: homeless for a while and don't stay stuck there but
- 26:49Speaker 4: rise up. Ah, that you can still have a relationship
- 26:54Speaker 4: that you think for was forever. And you end up saying,
- 26:57Speaker 4: who did I marry? Glory be to God. Everybody putting
- 27:03Speaker 4: their fingers saying, I think you thought you was a
- 27:06Speaker 4: woman of God if you was discerning, how did this
- 27:10Speaker 4: happen to you? But that many people know that the
- 27:13Speaker 4: enemy will give you what you want in a package,
- 27:18Speaker 4: and when you accept that package, you find out that
- 27:22Speaker 4: it wasn't from God, but it was from the enemy.
- 27:25Speaker 4: Glory be to God. And then how do you accept
- 27:29Speaker 4: losing a part of your body? Ah, hallelujah and laying
- 27:34Speaker 4: in the bed for four years, but then God raising
- 27:37Speaker 4: you up. There was a fear that you had and
- 27:40Speaker 4: that God delivered you from that fear. Glory be to God.
- 27:44Speaker 4: And you was able to attend your daughter's graduation and
- 27:48Speaker 4: her graduation party. Ah, thank you Jesus. And you was
- 27:53Speaker 4: able to give God glory and give God thanks. And
- 27:57Speaker 4: every season on my life, choose to worship God. Now
- 28:02Speaker 4: he lives in our praises. He inhabits our praise and
- 28:05Speaker 4: no matter what were going through, what stage of grief
- 28:08Speaker 4: that we're in, Oh, God said he'll never leave us,
- 28:12Speaker 4: So he'll never forsake because and God is not a
- 28:15Speaker 4: man that he should lie, nor the son of man
- 28:17Speaker 4: that he showed me pen. But every word that feceeded
- 28:21Speaker 4: out of the mouth of God is an accomplished where
- 28:24Speaker 4: it was set. And God has spoken over my life.
- 28:28Speaker 4: And I choose to serve God. I don't care what
- 28:33Speaker 4: people think. Oh, look at her laying on that bed
- 28:37Speaker 4: talking about how good God is. Yeah, God is still
- 28:41Speaker 4: good because he sustained me in my wilderness. Glory be
- 28:45Speaker 4: to God. Even though the children of Israel walked around
- 28:49Speaker 4: that mountain for forty years, God sustained them while they
- 28:53Speaker 4: were in the wilderness. Ah, he fed them, he gave
- 28:57Speaker 4: him water, he gave him light, he gave him fire.
- 29:00Speaker 4: Glory be to God, even their shoes in wax. Oh, hallelujahs.
- 29:04Speaker 4: So even in my wilderness, God is taking care of me,
- 29:08Speaker 4: even through my seasons of grief. I didn't let go
- 29:12Speaker 4: of God's hand. Hallelujah. I will forever, look to the
- 29:16Speaker 4: hills from when it's coming. My help, all of my
- 29:19Speaker 4: help comes from God. I understand that there's a season
- 29:24Speaker 4: to everything, and I thank God that I didn't die
- 29:28Speaker 4: in my will and my winter season because spring is
- 29:32Speaker 4: coming after a while. And when spring comes, everything is renewed,
- 29:38Speaker 4: everything is refreshed. And the name of Jesus, how ah,
- 29:43Speaker 4: my spring is coming. Glory be to God. My season
- 29:48Speaker 4: of grief, hallelujah, is almost over. I'm stepping into my destiny.
- 29:54Speaker 4: And if you're in the stages of grief, you're going
- 29:58Speaker 4: through some unpleasant circumstances. Some unpleasant situations. Don't allow the
- 30:05Speaker 4: naysayers to say God doesn't love you. How can you
- 30:09Speaker 4: talk about the goodness of God when X, Y, and
- 30:11Speaker 4: Z is happening to you. That's when you need to
- 30:14Speaker 4: praise God in advance, Praise God in front of the door. Huh.
- 30:19Speaker 4: Praise God in your grief seeds, and hallelujah, huh. Because
- 30:25Speaker 4: if you sow into the right ground, now you gonna
- 30:28Speaker 4: reap after your season of drought is over. Huh, you
- 30:33Speaker 4: can shout glory, Hallelujah, hallelujah, my season, My season of
- 30:39Speaker 4: grief is over. And I thank God that I went
- 30:43Speaker 4: through what I went through, because my grief wasn't for me,
- 30:48Speaker 4: but it was to tell somebody that's on the brink
- 30:51Speaker 4: of giving up, that's on the brink of letting go,
- 30:56Speaker 4: that can't see the darkness at the end of the tunnel,
- 31:00Speaker 4: going through this all alone, and they feel like nobody
- 31:03Speaker 4: else is going through it. Huh ah. But I went
- 31:06Speaker 4: through what I went through to tell you you can
- 31:08Speaker 4: make it. Uh, you can make it, hallelujah, Glory Be
- 31:12Speaker 4: to God. Matter of fact, you gotta make it, huh,
- 31:15Speaker 4: because somebody's on the other side waiting for you. Huh,
- 31:19Speaker 4: Just like there was someone under on the other side
- 31:22Speaker 4: waiting for me to say, come through, come through, come through.
- 31:26Speaker 4: We need you on the other side. Hallelujah. And I
- 31:30Speaker 4: came through. I came through. Hallelujah. Glory be to God,
- 31:33Speaker 4: Glory be to God. I'm just so grateful on tonight, hallelujah.
- 31:38Speaker 4: If you got your arms, and you got your legs
- 31:40Speaker 4: and you got your voice, ah, you ought to be
- 31:43Speaker 4: grateful too. Don't make no excuses why you can't do
- 31:47Speaker 4: why you can't do this, and you can't do that, hallelujah.
- 31:50Speaker 4: Even in my grief. Hallelujah. Ah. In two weeks, I'm
- 31:56Speaker 4: graduating from Bible School with my doctorate and ministry, graduating
- 32:04Speaker 4: as a salutatorian of the class, hallelujah. Right from my
- 32:08Speaker 4: place of grief, Right from the place where the enemy
- 32:11Speaker 4: told me it was all over, Right from the place
- 32:14Speaker 4: where the enemy said you'll never teach again. I'm teaching
- 32:18Speaker 4: a bachelor's class at Bible School. I'm teaching a Alma
- 32:22Speaker 4: Barra class. I'm teaching Bible study at my personal church.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Ah.
- 32:29Speaker 4: So you can't tell me what God can do. Oh,
- 32:32Speaker 4: God will take the ordinary hah ah and do extraordinary
- 32:36Speaker 4: things with it. Hallelujah, hallelujah. Didna they say it saying,
- 32:40Speaker 4: look at this little black, fat girl from Mississippi. She's
- 32:44Speaker 4: going through so much grief. She's not gonna be able
- 32:48Speaker 4: to make it. Huh. You see, my assassination was on
- 32:51Speaker 4: this time, and now the enemy wanted to stop me. Ah.
- 32:55Speaker 4: But glory be to God. Hah. When God has a
- 32:58Speaker 4: dang you to be great, can no devil in hell
- 33:02Speaker 4: stop you? Oh, Glory be to God. So in conclusion,
- 33:07Speaker 4: glory be to God. I'm trying to let this thing
- 33:11Speaker 4: go hallelujah, hallelujah. But somebody, somebody on tonight is at
- 33:17Speaker 4: the break of the end. God. They don't feel like
- 33:22Speaker 4: they can go on. They feel like they've been through
- 33:26Speaker 4: so much, so much. Hallelujah that they all alone. God. Ah,
- 33:31Speaker 4: but you love them God. No matter what you go through,
- 33:35Speaker 4: her God is there. He was always there. Hallelujah. Glory
- 33:41Speaker 4: be to God. But in conclusion, hallelujah. Denial, it's not
- 33:49Speaker 4: a destination, it is a doorway. It protects us temporarily
- 33:57Speaker 4: and while we gather the strength to face painful realities.
- 34:04Speaker 4: Healing begins when you allow God his word and supported
- 34:08Speaker 4: people to help us move from denial towards acceptance and hope.
