- 0:01Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Outspoken Plus. It's your extra dose
- 0:05Speaker 1: of the hottest influencer and pop culture news.
- 0:08Speaker 2: I'm Sophie Torber and coming up on today's show.
- 0:11Speaker 1: The Australian open influencer dilemma and Maddie J's vasectomy backflip.
- 0:16Speaker 1: But first, Sammy Robinson has been named the global face
- 0:20Speaker 1: of Bondi Sands. The fashion label founder announced the news
- 0:23Speaker 1: on Instagram saying 18-year-old Sammy is screaming.
- 0:26Speaker 2: I feel like it's a great pick by Bondi Sands
- 0:28Speaker 2: because she really epitomizes the brand. She's a perfect face
- 0:31Speaker 2: for it. She's been working with them for over 10
- 0:33Speaker 2: years now. And she explained that this is a year
- 0:36Speaker 2: long role. So she's never actually been an ambassador before.
- 0:40Speaker 2: And Bondi Sands has four different ambassadors. So there's two
- 0:43Speaker 2: US ambassadors. They are the Mian twins. And then Chloe
- 0:47Speaker 2: Burrows from Love Island UK is the UK ambassador. So
- 0:50Speaker 2: they all had a big event in Sydney recently where
- 0:53Speaker 2: Sammy was in attendance. And Sammy vlogged from the event
- 0:56Speaker 2: and I am a sucker for a Sammy Robinson vlog. Kate,
- 1:00Speaker 2: you said that you can't think of anyone else who'd
- 1:01Speaker 2: be a good Bondi Sands ambassador.
- 1:03Speaker 3: I'm a bit offended.
- 1:04Speaker 1: I have literally been repping Bondi Sands, I'd say for
- 1:07Speaker 1: 10 years as well, but I don't always do a
- 1:09Speaker 1: good job of doing it myself.
- 1:11Speaker 2: As OGs will know from quite a few years.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Ago now, the incident at Audi where my Pants were
- 1:17Speaker 1: flipped inside out and I had a green tan going on.
- 1:21Speaker 2: That's not really the look they're going for, is it?
- 1:23Speaker 1: That actually wasn't Bondi Sands' fault as well. It's because
- 1:26Speaker 1: I didn't realise, well, not I didn't realise, I'm lazy
- 1:29Speaker 1: and I never used to wash my glove and apparently
- 1:32Speaker 1: if you leave it to fester for too long, You
- 1:34Speaker 1: then end up wiping old tan on yourself that's turned green.
- 1:37Speaker 1: That's a bit of a fun fact for anyone out
- 1:39Speaker 1: there who's learning to, well, starting to tan for the
- 1:41Speaker 1: first time.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Surely most people clean their glove after using it. Like
- 1:44Speaker 2: that's not really a hack, is it? Because you just
- 1:46Speaker 2: said like a complete grub again, Sophie, like the time
- 1:48Speaker 2: you admitted that you didn't wash your towels.
- 1:50Speaker 1: I actually think a lot of people wouldn't wash theirs
- 1:53Speaker 1: after every use. I mean, when you're an avid fake
- 1:55Speaker 1: tanner like myself and you do it on the regular
- 1:57Speaker 1: every week, it gets you know, once you're covered in tan,
- 2:00Speaker 1: you don't then want to wash it off because you
- 2:01Speaker 1: don't want to get water on yourself. I saw in
- 2:03Speaker 1: a recent vlog with Zoe Ray, a UK influencer, and
- 2:06Speaker 1: she was asking her husband, Danny Ray, if she should
- 2:09Speaker 1: tan before a High Rocks event.
- 2:11Speaker 2: He's like, no, no, please, you really don't need to tan.
- 2:13Speaker 2: And she's like, Danny doesn't like the orange elbows and knees.
- 2:17Speaker 3: And I was like, oh my gosh, that's hilarious.
- 2:18Speaker 2: I think a lot of men don't. They probably didn't
- 2:20Speaker 2: want to put up with the smell either.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:22Speaker 2: My husband always gets upset when I say it's tanning night.
- 2:24Speaker 2: He's like, I just can't stand the smell. I mean,
- 2:26Speaker 2: I also use Bondi Sands, but I used to love
- 2:28Speaker 2: loving tan, but it's so much more expensive that I
- 2:31Speaker 2: kind of had to downgrade to Bondi Sands. It's funny
- 2:33Speaker 2: because when Sammy was talking in her vlog before she
- 2:36Speaker 2: said that she was the Bondi Sands ambassador, I actually
- 2:39Speaker 2: was thinking that her tan looked a bit funny on
- 2:41Speaker 2: her hands and then she did a photo shoot for
- 2:44Speaker 2: them and it looked different. I'm assuming that they maybe
- 2:47Speaker 2: got like a professional in to spray it. But it
- 2:50Speaker 2: is so hard to tan your hands, right? Oh, I
- 2:53Speaker 2: never can.
- 2:54Speaker 1: I used to get told that it looked like I
- 2:56Speaker 1: had white gloves on because I'd always wash my hands
- 2:58Speaker 1: after because, you know, during the night when you go
- 2:59Speaker 1: to the bathroom, etc.
- 3:01Speaker 2: And yeah, it was not a good look at all.
- 3:03Speaker 2: My husband's also.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Told me in the past that I look like an
- 3:05Speaker 1: avatar because sometimes I'll come out just fully in the nude,
- 3:08Speaker 1: just with the tan on just to make him laugh.
- 3:10Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I just put so much on and it just, it
- 3:12Speaker 2: just looks so bad. Isn't that a humbling experience, particularly
- 3:16Speaker 2: postpartum doing a tan in front of a mirror nude?
- 3:18Speaker 2: You're like, well, the other night I had some of
- 3:20Speaker 2: Dale's friends over and they were telling me that they
- 3:23Speaker 2: hate fake tan. And I said, you just don't realize
- 3:26Speaker 2: that the people that you're looking at are tanned.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Do you know what I mean?
- 3:29Speaker 2: Like it's, They're like, no, no, we actually really like
- 3:31Speaker 2: porcelain skin. And I thought, this is not what I
- 3:34Speaker 2: need to hear because when I need the motivation to tan,
- 3:37Speaker 2: I want to think that people actually think I look better. Yeah,
- 3:40Speaker 2: but you really want to be impressing Dale's mates. No,
- 3:43Speaker 2: but so many of them were agreeing that they hate
- 3:46Speaker 2: fake tan. I think it's more that they don't want
- 3:48Speaker 2: to put up with the upkeep of fake tan when
- 3:50Speaker 2: their partner does it. Yeah, but a lot of these
- 3:51Speaker 2: guys were single.
- 3:52Speaker 3: So, I mean, I don't know.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Yeah. Over the last two weeks, an influx of influencers
- 3:58Speaker 2: have descended on Melbourne Park to promote the Australian Open,
- 4:01Speaker 2: one courtside selfie at a time. Their presence has clearly
- 4:05Speaker 2: paid off with the tournament attracting record-breaking crowds. However, not
- 4:09Speaker 2: everyone is happy. Tennis fans claim influencers are changing the
- 4:14Speaker 2: Grand Slam's look, feel and experience and they've had enough. Yeah,
- 4:18Speaker 2: I mean, there's been a lot of change with the tournament.
- 4:20Speaker 2: So over the last couple of years, the Australian Opens
- 4:22Speaker 2: marketing team has been working very much in overdrive to
- 4:25Speaker 2: make the tournament more than just tennis. And hats off
- 4:28Speaker 2: to them because they have really achieved it. I mean,
- 4:31Speaker 2: I've been to the Australian Open twice. One was nine
- 4:33Speaker 2: years ago before the whole fan village was even a thing.
- 4:37Speaker 2: And the second was in 2024. And it's really like
- 4:39Speaker 2: chalk and cheese. So they have created this absolutely amazing
- 4:43Speaker 2: vibe with all these pop-up bars and brand activations. And
- 4:47Speaker 2: you could tell that some people were just there literally
- 4:50Speaker 2: for the fan village. Like they weren't watching any of
- 4:52Speaker 2: the tennis. And this year, the marketing team has really
- 4:55Speaker 2: focused on going that step further and making the Australian
- 4:58Speaker 2: Open the.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Place to be seen.
- 5:00Speaker 2: And to do that, they've invited what media are calling
- 5:03Speaker 2: an army of influencers to spread awareness for the event.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Yeah, it seems to be in overdrive this year. I
- 5:09Speaker 1: think it has been gradually growing though, because over the years,
- 5:12Speaker 1: we have seen a lot of influencers invited to sit
- 5:14Speaker 1: in in key positions during the games.
- 5:17Speaker 2: But it's on drugs this year. Every influencer I know
- 5:20Speaker 2: seems to be at the Australian Open. Yeah, and historically
- 5:23Speaker 2: it's been the brands that have invited influencers to the tennis,
- 5:26Speaker 2: but this year the Australian Open organisers have wanted more
- 5:29Speaker 2: control over the influencers that are there. And Tennis Australia's
- 5:33Speaker 2: Director of Content, Bree Stewart, said, we understand that they're
- 5:36Speaker 2: coming anyway and we want to be a part of
- 5:38Speaker 2: the story they're creating. So this year, Tennis Australia, who
- 5:41Speaker 2: run the Australian Open, have created the AO Creators Lounge
- 5:44Speaker 2: where creators can film, edit and work.
- 5:47Speaker 1: It sounds like it's also a way to make the
- 5:50Speaker 1: creators feel special by offering this exclusive lounge because they
- 5:55Speaker 1: have been using it as motivation to create even more
- 5:58Speaker 1: content because the more content you create, the more times
- 6:02Speaker 1: you can go in there, isn't it, Kay? Well, a
- 6:03Speaker 1: popular TikToker who asked to remain anonymous actually spoke out
- 6:07Speaker 1: to the ABC and they said that they were quite
- 6:10Speaker 1: taken aback about how much the Australian Open was expecting
- 6:13Speaker 1: from the creators. So they claimed that they had to create.
- 6:16Speaker 2: 20 posts across the tournament to be allowed in the
- 6:19Speaker 2: AO Creators Lounge. Oh, wow. And they were quoted saying,
- 6:22Speaker 2: some people don't think we work for our money, but 20.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Edited videos is a lot out of our day. I
- 6:26Speaker 3: did the math.
- 6:27Speaker 2: That's a minimum equivalent of $ 60, 000 in TikTok. So I
- 6:30Speaker 2: think they're talking about Contra there. Yeah. So they're only
- 6:32Speaker 2: getting tickets and they're expected to post 20 pieces of content.
- 6:36Speaker 3: That's crazy. It's not even tickets.
- 6:38Speaker 2: So the Australian Open has come out and said that
- 6:40Speaker 2: they haven't paid any influencers to be there or flown
- 6:43Speaker 2: any of them out. So these are just influencers that
- 6:45Speaker 2: are attending through brands. And basically the Australian Open have
- 6:49Speaker 2: also introduced this reward tier system. So a week out
- 6:53Speaker 2: from the event, this launched and it was to encourage
- 6:55Speaker 2: influencers to post and drive engagement before the event.
- 6:59Speaker 3: And how it.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Works is basically the more you post and the more
- 7:02Speaker 2: impressions you get, the more you're rewarded.
- 7:05Speaker 3: So the rewards.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Include guided backstage tours, accreditation to access the grounds, invites
- 7:10Speaker 2: to AO partner events and seats to really important games.
- 7:13Speaker 2: So you've probably been seeing the likes of Sofa Dofa
- 7:17Speaker 2: and Jackie Alexander sitting in these key spots in the crowd.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Like I think Anna McAvoy was posting that she was
- 7:23Speaker 2: sitting so close to Federer. And that's because they've been
- 7:26Speaker 2: posting a lot.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I'm sorry, but like if we got the opportunity to
- 7:29Speaker 1: do that, I love the tennis so much that we
- 7:31Speaker 1: would be absolutely flooding outspoken listeners with 20 videos at
- 7:35Speaker 1: the tennis.
- 7:36Speaker 3: I'm sorry, but you.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Can see why people are just like, whatever, we'll do
- 7:39Speaker 2: it for tickets. In saying that, in terms.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Of the 20 videos that that TikToker was talking about
- 7:45Speaker 1: to the ABC, So were they having to create 20
- 7:47Speaker 1: videos just so they could go on the lounge?
- 7:49Speaker 2: I mean, what's so good about the lounge? Well, I
- 7:50Speaker 2: assume it's to do with exclusivity and everyone wants to
- 7:53Speaker 2: be seen in this AO creators lounge. It's a big perk.
- 7:57Speaker 2: I mean, we've been to the tennis before, Sophie. We
- 8:00Speaker 2: were invited by New Balance and it's chaotic there, particularly
- 8:03Speaker 2: if you're trying to do work. Like we went back
- 8:05Speaker 2: to our apartment that we rented to do work, but
- 8:08Speaker 2: I suppose it's you know, between games, you could sit
- 8:11Speaker 2: in there.
- 8:11Speaker 3: I mean, it's been boiling hot.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Can I just call you out calling it work? I mean,
- 8:15Speaker 1: I know that work can be fun, but it was
- 8:16Speaker 1: putting a couple of reels together.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Yeah, but you still had to stay up late and
- 8:21Speaker 2: do it.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Like, I don't think we should be belittling content creators' work.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Did you guys see that Millie Ford ran into world
- 8:26Speaker 2: number two Yannick Sinner in her lift at a hotel?
- 8:29Speaker 3: No, I didn't.
- 8:30Speaker 2: I remember one year, because we are such big tennis fans,
- 8:34Speaker 2: waiting at the crown to get a glimpse of some
- 8:36Speaker 2: of the tennis players. And it was quite tragic because
- 8:38Speaker 2: I don't think we saw anyone.
- 8:39Speaker 3: No, we did. Or there was one. Who did we see?
- 8:41Speaker 3: We saw Bouchard.
- 8:42Speaker 2: And I said, oh my God, can I please get
- 8:44Speaker 2: a photo? She walked straight past me.
- 8:45Speaker 3: She just lost.
- 8:46Speaker 2: So it probably wasn't the best timing. I think we
- 8:49Speaker 2: saw one of the pros. I can't remember his name,
- 8:51Speaker 2: but he was out the front. But we're like, I
- 8:53Speaker 2: actually don't care. We're just here to see Rafael Nadal.
- 8:55Speaker 1: This new influx of influencers, though, seems to be upsetting
- 8:58Speaker 1: a lot of long-term tennis fans. They have been slamming
- 9:02Speaker 1: influencers for lacking tennis etiquette and complaining that they're too
- 9:05Speaker 1: busy creating content to watch the game, which is essentially
- 9:08Speaker 1: the whole reason why they are there. One fan told
- 9:11Speaker 1: the ABC, I've been seated behind influencers before and I've
- 9:15Speaker 1: witnessed them on their phones talking, leaving early, and I
- 9:18Speaker 1: personally don't think it's a good look. The only comparison
- 9:21Speaker 1: I have is the AFL-AFLW, which has very minimal influencer presences.
- 9:25Speaker 1: So that doesn't affect my experience as much as the tennis,
- 9:28Speaker 1: where the influencer presence is growing every year.
- 9:31Speaker 2: I remember last year there were some tennis goers complaining
- 9:34Speaker 2: that they got sat behind, I think it was four
- 9:36Speaker 2: Melbourne influencers who were droning on about properties they wanted
- 9:39Speaker 2: to buy and just general gossip. And all I could
- 9:42Speaker 2: think was, yeah, that sounds ultra annoying, but I would
- 9:44Speaker 2: have just loved eavesdropping into their conversation. Because some of
- 9:47Speaker 2: the games are quite long. Sometimes you need to do
- 9:49Speaker 2: something else.
- 9:50Speaker 1: It'd actually be my perfect environment. Some of the other
- 9:52Speaker 1: criticisms that sports fans have thrown at influencers is that
- 9:56Speaker 1: they have blamed them for the increasing ticket prices. and
- 9:59Speaker 1: also overcrowding at the event. And another fan complained that
- 10:03Speaker 1: they missed when the Australian Open was about dressing in
- 10:06Speaker 1: team colours rather than fashionably. Now, I felt like I
- 10:09Speaker 1: had my foot in my mouth after saying that, oh,
- 10:12Speaker 1: who's going to wear Morgan Riddle's Beginning Boutique clothes to
- 10:16Speaker 1: the Australian Open? And then I saw one of my faves,
- 10:18Speaker 1: Jackie Alexander, who clearly been sponsored by Beginning Boutique, wearing
- 10:22Speaker 1: that outfit there. And then I saw so many people
- 10:24Speaker 1: who were literally decked out in ball gowns just to
- 10:27Speaker 1: watch the tennis.
- 10:28Speaker 2: And I was like, maybe it's me who's not right.
- 10:31Speaker 3: That's not the general public though.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Yeah, to be fair, we did say it was influencers
- 10:34Speaker 2: that would be wearing that sort of stuff. Like I'm
- 10:35Speaker 2: yet to see the general public rocking that. But again,
- 10:39Speaker 2: we're not at the event this year.
- 10:40Speaker 1: As much as I've had so much FOMO over these
- 10:42Speaker 1: past two weeks, seeing all these different influences at the event,
- 10:46Speaker 1: there is this other part of me that enjoys seeing
- 10:49Speaker 1: a different perspective of the game, whether it's behind the
- 10:51Speaker 1: scenes stuff or cool activations that are going on through
- 10:55Speaker 1: just looking at their accounts. I think that they are
- 10:58Speaker 1: elevating the game. I think that they are helping bring
- 11:00Speaker 1: more eyeballs to it.
- 11:01Speaker 2: I think it's just a case of people wanting to
- 11:03Speaker 2: hate on influencers because it's really no different to back
- 11:06Speaker 2: in the day when mainstream celebrities were invited to sit
- 11:09Speaker 2: in the boxes and the cameras used to pan to
- 11:11Speaker 2: them in the crowd. We just know more about the
- 11:14Speaker 2: red carpet treatment they're getting behind the scenes because influencers
- 11:17Speaker 2: are literally doing their job and posting about it. I
- 11:19Speaker 2: also feel like there's a bit of misogyny at play
- 11:21Speaker 2: because I saw a number of articles talking about how
- 11:24Speaker 2: influencers are flooding the AusOpen website And a lot of
- 11:27Speaker 2: men were commenting like, oh, what are they doing there?
- 11:29Speaker 2: They all look the same. And there was this general
- 11:32Speaker 2: vibe that all of the influencers were airheads who were there.
- 11:35Speaker 2: And it pissed me off because I thought, well, they're
- 11:37Speaker 2: actually bringing a lot of coverage to the game. They're
- 11:40Speaker 2: pushing out the Australian Open to a lot of followers
- 11:42Speaker 2: who might not have ever thought about going.
- 11:44Speaker 3: To the event.
- 11:45Speaker 2: There's this tone that they don't deserve to be there.
- 11:48Speaker 2: It's like, well, why not? They've built these platforms. And
- 11:51Speaker 2: I mean, a lot of them aren't even being paid
- 11:53Speaker 2: to go. A lot of it is contra. It's very
- 11:56Speaker 2: similar to when Taylor Swift copped flack for getting her
- 11:58Speaker 2: fans interested in the NFL. It was like she was
- 12:00Speaker 2: demonized by the male sports fans over. It's like we
- 12:04Speaker 2: should be thrilled that more and more people are actually
- 12:07Speaker 2: getting around tennis in Australia. Like I get it when
- 12:10Speaker 2: you're an old school fan and it's sort of like, oh, well,
- 12:13Speaker 2: I was here first and this is the way it
- 12:15Speaker 2: used to be. But the game has to evolve in
- 12:17Speaker 2: order to stay in business. And I also think it's
- 12:20Speaker 2: a fact that so many people don't recognize influencers as
- 12:23Speaker 2: the new celebrity. you know, as you said, Delta Goodrum
- 12:26Speaker 2: or Beckhart right before she met Leighton Hewitt, they'd be
- 12:29Speaker 2: at the game because of their status of being on television.
- 12:32Speaker 2: But arguably, a lot of the influencers attending the Oz
- 12:34Speaker 2: Open would have far greater reach than some of those celebrities.
- 12:38Speaker 2: In the defense of people who are pissed off about it, though.
- 12:41Speaker 3: What, like you?
- 12:43Speaker 2: No, I can totally understand, though, how annoying it is
- 12:47Speaker 2: when you.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Are a huge fan of the game, you know a
- 12:51Speaker 1: lot about the players and then you see people putting
- 12:55Speaker 1: up posts online being like, I've never watched the game
- 12:57Speaker 1: before and then they've got front row seats and you're
- 12:59Speaker 1: sort of like, okay, cool.
- 13:01Speaker 2: I can't lie because I have had pangs of jealousy
- 13:03Speaker 2: when I've seen some of the influencers there who I
- 13:05Speaker 2: know don't really support tennis in their front row and
- 13:08Speaker 2: they're watching this incredible game. But at the end of
- 13:11Speaker 2: the day, that's just life. It's just interesting to interrogate
- 13:15Speaker 2: your own internalised misogyny there and be like, oh, why
- 13:17Speaker 2: do I feel like they don't deserve it? But say,
- 13:20Speaker 2: you know, a mainstream celebrity does.
- 13:21Speaker 1: But I think it's also different with the tennis because
- 13:23Speaker 1: it is known as being the gentleman's sport. And I
- 13:26Speaker 1: think that if you are a big fan, maybe you're
- 13:29Speaker 1: a bit older and you have no idea who this
- 13:31Speaker 1: influencer is in front of you who's loudly speaking during
- 13:34Speaker 1: the point and you're just trying to enjoy the game.
- 13:36Speaker 2: I can see how that would piss you off.
- 13:37Speaker 1: I mean, last year there were reports that Tammy Hembrough
- 13:40Speaker 1: and Matt Sikowsky had a massive brawl at one of
- 13:43Speaker 1: the VIP spots.
- 13:45Speaker 3: And you'd just be like, shut up.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Well, there was speculation that they wouldn't be invited back.
- 13:49Speaker 2: I think it was Chemist Warehouse who invited them. Matt
- 13:52Speaker 2: Zukowski's been posting at the tennis. It seems like he
- 13:55Speaker 2: was invited back, but Tammy has been a no-show so far.
- 13:58Speaker 3: So maybe it was her that was banned.
- 13:59Speaker 1: I wonder if she's worried about seeing Matt. She probably,
- 14:01Speaker 1: I mean, Melbourne's his hometown. She probably thinks, oh, there's
- 14:04Speaker 1: nothing worse than running into this guy.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Just back to the actual tennis. Did you guys see
- 14:07Speaker 2: Coco Goff smashing her tennis racket? I did. And I
- 14:11Speaker 2: watched it many times because I am a really bad sport.
- 14:15Speaker 2: And I actually associated with that. I was like, that
- 14:17Speaker 2: would probably be me in Div 10 tennis with Sophie
- 14:20Speaker 2: on it. She's Saturday morning. She has come out and
- 14:22Speaker 2: said that she tried to find a private area to
- 14:25Speaker 2: smash her racket because she doesn't think it's good for
- 14:27Speaker 2: the sport. And I suppose the children watching to have
- 14:30Speaker 2: that kind of scene play out But she said there's
- 14:32Speaker 2: literally nowhere where there isn't a camera anymore besides maybe
- 14:36Speaker 2: the toilets or the change rooms.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Take out her anger in a different way other than smashing,
- 14:41Speaker 1: you know, a sponsor's tennis racket.
- 14:43Speaker 2: I mean, I think it's a little bit of a
- 14:44Speaker 2: cop out to blame the broadcast. So I'd be like, oh, well,
- 14:47Speaker 2: they shouldn't be filming everywhere. It's like, well, how about
- 14:49Speaker 2: you just get a handle on your emotions? I mean,
- 14:51Speaker 2: as I said, I'm someone that gets very, very angry
- 14:54Speaker 2: as well. But, you know, sometimes it's good to be shamed.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Former Bachelor star Matty J has done a full backflip
- 15:01Speaker 2: announcing his plans to get a vasectomy. It comes months
- 15:04Speaker 2: after the media personality faced intense backlash for admitting he
- 15:08Speaker 2: didn't want to get the procedure done as he was
- 15:10Speaker 2: concerned about the long-term health effects.
- 15:12Speaker 3: Sorry, I have to laugh like that.
- 15:14Speaker 2: It's just so laughable when you think about what women
- 15:18Speaker 2: have to go through.
- 15:18Speaker 3: But continue.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Sorry, Amy. Yeah, well, it was actually Matt's wife, Laura Byrne,
- 15:22Speaker 2: who initially aired Matt's concerns on her podcast.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Yeah, so it was back in August, if you'll believe it.
- 15:28Speaker 1: So six weeks before their third daughter Poppy was born
- 15:31Speaker 1: and Laura opened up about a conversation that she had
- 15:34Speaker 1: with Matt about vasectomy. So she admitted that the conversation
- 15:38Speaker 1: didn't go down as well as she had hoped.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Now the couple were.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Both on the same page that Poppy was going to
- 15:43Speaker 1: be their last child and Laura assumed that they would
- 15:46Speaker 1: also be on the same page about Matt getting the procedure.
- 15:50Speaker 1: But he replied that he wasn't sure about getting a
- 15:52Speaker 1: vasectomy and Because as you mentioned, Amy, he was concerned
- 15:55Speaker 1: about the long-term health effects. Now, Laura ended up replying, sorry,
- 15:59Speaker 1: the long-term effects of what? Of the lack of pregnancies.
- 16:02Speaker 1: And that went on to say that he wasn't across
- 16:03Speaker 1: all of the effects that a potential vasectomy could have
- 16:06Speaker 1: on his body. And Laura pointed out, well, that she
- 16:09Speaker 1: has been on the pill for 17 years, which has
- 16:11Speaker 1: had a massive impact on her body. Then you've got
- 16:14Speaker 1: the three pregnancies, then the menopause, which she is eventually
- 16:17Speaker 1: going to go through. And as you can imagine, the backlash-
- 16:21Speaker 1: The menopause.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Was pretty swift.
- 16:23Speaker 1: So Matt was criticized online for his reluctance to undergo
- 16:26Speaker 1: the surgery. One follower wrote, I think Matt just gave
- 16:29Speaker 1: me the ick. Sorry, Laura, it's the least the man
- 16:32Speaker 1: can do.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Another wrote, Matt, grow up. It's the bare minimum that
- 16:36Speaker 2: you can do. It's just laughable that Matt says that
- 16:39Speaker 2: he's annoyed about the effects on his body, but then
- 16:42Speaker 2: when questioned what those effects are, he says he doesn't know.
- 16:45Speaker 2: I mean, how tone deaf can you be when you
- 16:48Speaker 2: consider something like endometriosis, which so many women suffer from
- 16:53Speaker 2: is so under-researched. And then to be like, oh, well,
- 16:57Speaker 2: we don't know the effects of vasectomies.
- 16:59Speaker 3: It's like, what?
- 17:00Speaker 2: Well, the short-term side effects of having a vasectomy include
- 17:03Speaker 2: pain and soreness, swelling and bruising, bleeding, and lumps. I mean,
- 17:08Speaker 2: as I said, this is short-term effects. And there are
- 17:10Speaker 2: apparently less common rare complications, which include infections, a hematoma,
- 17:15Speaker 2: sperm granula, which is a small non-cancerous lump, post-vasectomy pain syndrome.
- 17:20Speaker 2: I mean, Nothing that major. I mean, these are rare complications.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Think of all of these side effects of having a baby. Well,
- 17:27Speaker 2: we were only talking about that last week with Anna
- 17:29Speaker 2: McAvoy and all the pain that she's been going through
- 17:31Speaker 2: with her foot. I mean, if I was Laura Byrne,
- 17:34Speaker 2: I would have gone absolutely nuts at him, which I'm
- 17:36Speaker 2: sure she did behind closed doors.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Well, as you can imagine, she was forced to release
- 17:40Speaker 1: a statement at the time. She wrote that she felt
- 17:42Speaker 1: like a lot of assumptions were being made in the
- 17:45Speaker 1: comment section about Matt and clarified that he does play
- 17:48Speaker 1: his part in contraception, and is happy to wear a condom.
- 17:51Speaker 1: She said she is the one who prefers that he
- 17:53Speaker 1: doesn't wear it. I remember that comment raised a lot
- 17:57Speaker 1: of eyebrows because people were like.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Is it him or you that doesn't want to wear it? Anyway,
- 18:02Speaker 2: I actually heard Shameless talking on their Friday show about this,
- 18:05Speaker 2: where a woman will come out on the internet and
- 18:08Speaker 2: complain about something that their partner does and then be
- 18:12Speaker 2: suddenly really put back when people agree and say, oh,
- 18:15Speaker 2: that's not right. You should leave him or you should
- 18:17Speaker 2: not be happy with it.
- 18:18Speaker 1: And it's like, well, Don't put this information out there
- 18:21Speaker 1: if you don't expect people to be like, what? Yeah, well,
- 18:24Speaker 1: she continued writing in the statement, but if a man
- 18:27Speaker 1: is happy to take responsibility for his part in contraception
- 18:30Speaker 1: by wearing a condom, let's not jump to calling him
- 18:32Speaker 1: a pussy and a loser because he shares reservations around
- 18:35Speaker 1: getting the snip. She finished by saying she knows this
- 18:38Speaker 1: is a triggering conversation for so many women who have
- 18:41Speaker 1: experienced men not taking responsibility and expecting women to front
- 18:45Speaker 1: the load when it comes to contraception.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Now, last week, Life Uncut released a special Q &
- 18:50Speaker 2: A episode featuring Laura and Maddie J. And listeners were
- 18:54Speaker 2: invited to send in their burning questions. And many wondered
- 18:57Speaker 2: what Matt's thoughts were now on having a vasectomy.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Let's take a listen. Vasectomies.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Yeah. We had a big chat about vasectomies last year.
- 19:05Speaker 4: Where are you at now on the vasectomy thought?
- 19:09Speaker 5: I'm going to book it in next week. Not book
- 19:11Speaker 5: it in. I'll speak to someone to try and book
- 19:13Speaker 5: it in next week.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Really?
- 19:15Speaker 4: Yeah. How do you feel about it now?
- 19:18Speaker 5: I still think I'm going to get like a sample
- 19:22Speaker 5: sperm frozen.
- 19:24Speaker 4: Are you doing that in case we separate and you
- 19:27Speaker 4: have like a new wife and you need some sperm
- 19:29Speaker 4: for her? Just in case. Or is it just to
- 19:31Speaker 4: keep it for old time's sakes?
- 19:32Speaker 5: Like if you're going to cement over the well, get
- 19:37Speaker 5: one more bucket out before you do that.
- 19:39Speaker 4: What are you going to do with that bucket?
- 19:43Speaker 3: Are you going to keep it?
- 19:44Speaker 5: Just in case. Who knows? You may want the bucket.
- 19:49Speaker 3: It kind of reminds me.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Me of how Steph Clare Smith's husband, Josh Miller, was
- 19:54Speaker 2: trying to tell himself that it was all going to
- 19:55Speaker 2: be okay because the procedure could be reversed if needed.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Yeah, it's interesting to go in with that mindset. I
- 20:01Speaker 1: do love that Laura joked, is this because we're getting separated?
- 20:04Speaker 1: Because I actually think that that would be a genuine
- 20:05Speaker 1: concern for a lot of women if their husband was like, oh,
- 20:08Speaker 1: I just want to keep this backed up just in case.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Yeah, well, you would be like, well, why? I mean,
- 20:14Speaker 2: particularly because Laura is set to turn 40 this year.
- 20:17Speaker 2: And not that you obviously can't have children in your 40s,
- 20:19Speaker 2: but it does get a lot more difficult. And they've
- 20:21Speaker 2: also been quite adamant on the fact that this is
- 20:23Speaker 2: their last baby.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Well, it doesn't sound like Laura is actually that certain
- 20:27Speaker 1: on it. She said that she knows they shouldn't have
- 20:29Speaker 1: any more kids because she feels like they wouldn't be
- 20:31Speaker 1: able to manage a fourth, but she doesn't like the
- 20:34Speaker 1: idea of not having an option.
- 20:36Speaker 2: She said it feels weird to her.
- 20:38Speaker 3: I just don't understand.
- 20:40Speaker 2: If this is how these people feel, then why are
- 20:42Speaker 2: they getting the vasectomies? What is the push for?
- 20:45Speaker 1: I suppose it's because they don't want to use the
- 20:47Speaker 1: pill or other forms of contraception.
- 20:50Speaker 2: I think they see it as a form of contraception
- 20:51Speaker 2: that can be reversed.
- 20:53Speaker 3: I just find that bizarre.
- 20:54Speaker 2: I mean, If you're looking at contraception, there are other
- 20:57Speaker 2: methods to use that aren't so permanent. Like, yes, in
- 21:00Speaker 2: some cases you can reverse a vasectomy, but, you know,
- 21:03Speaker 2: that's a big ordeal to go through. If Matty J
- 21:07Speaker 2: is concerned about the pain of going through the initial vasectomy,
- 21:10Speaker 2: I hardly doubt he's going to go through a reversal
- 21:12Speaker 2: to have a fourth child.
- 21:13Speaker 3: Well, that's the thing.
- 21:14Speaker 1: On Life Uncut's most recent episode that dropped this week,
- 21:17Speaker 1: Laura revealed that more about Maddie's decision to book in
- 21:21Speaker 1: a vasectomy. So she said that despite them having a newborn,
- 21:25Speaker 1: their resolution for 2026 was that they wanted to spend
- 21:28Speaker 1: more time together and have more sex. And they were
- 21:32Speaker 1: able to kick this challenge off whilst they were away
- 21:34Speaker 1: at their holiday house because she said that the kids
- 21:36Speaker 1: were really well behaved and Poppy was.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Sleeping really well.
- 21:40Speaker 1: But it actually resulted in Laura having to get two
- 21:44Speaker 1: morning after pills in the space of two weeks. So
- 21:47Speaker 1: She said the first time she went into the small
- 21:49Speaker 1: coastal town's chemist, she had Poppy strapped to her and
- 21:53Speaker 1: she tried to subtly ask for the morning after pill
- 21:55Speaker 1: and it turned out that the chemist was actually a
- 21:58Speaker 1: Life Uncut listener who told her on the slide, oh,
- 22:01Speaker 1: I love the podcast.
- 22:02Speaker 3: So she said that.
- 22:03Speaker 1: That actually comforted her though because she's like, well, this
- 22:05Speaker 1: woman already knows so much about my sex life as
- 22:07Speaker 1: it is.
- 22:07Speaker 2: She's one of the people. She's not judging me here
- 22:10Speaker 2: in this scenario.
- 22:12Speaker 1: The second time round, Laura ended up sending Maddie J
- 22:15Speaker 1: in to go and get it because she said, be
- 22:17Speaker 1: going back there in the space of two weeks.
- 22:19Speaker 2: Particularly if a Life Uncut listener was in there.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Anyway, the pharmacist was apparently very young looking. Matty J
- 22:26Speaker 1: said that he didn't look old enough to actually be
- 22:28Speaker 1: a pharmacist. And he said, I can't actually give it
- 22:30Speaker 1: to you. It needs to be for the patient. The
- 22:32Speaker 1: patient needs to come in. Somehow Matty J talked him
- 22:35Speaker 1: around and ended up getting Laura on the phone.
- 22:37Speaker 2: And she didn't realize she was on loudspeaker.
- 22:39Speaker 1: And she told the pharmacist that She had to have
- 22:41Speaker 1: the pill because her husband is irresponsible and she now
- 22:44Speaker 1: needs it twice in two weeks. So everyone in the
- 22:48Speaker 1: chemist heard her say this.
- 22:49Speaker 2: See, I was thinking, why the hell would you air
- 22:52Speaker 2: this on your national podcast that gets hundreds of thousands
- 22:55Speaker 2: of downloads? But I kind of get it now because
- 22:58Speaker 2: sometimes you take the power back by publicly talking about
- 23:02Speaker 2: it and sort of having a joke, whereas you know,
- 23:04Speaker 2: potentially the Life Uncut listener could have spread that around and,
- 23:07Speaker 2: you know, added a bit of mayo onto it. So
- 23:10Speaker 2: I can see why they actually did acknowledge it on
- 23:12Speaker 2: the podcast.
- 23:12Speaker 1: I wonder if they were also worried that someone might
- 23:15Speaker 1: go to the press about it and say, oh, pregnancy scare.
- 23:17Speaker 1: I mean, I can imagine that appearing on the Daily Mail.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Well, I'm pretty sure the Daily Mail are going to
- 23:21Speaker 2: write something about it anyway, because the buzzword vasectomy and
- 23:25Speaker 2: also morning after pill in a headline, that's going to
- 23:28Speaker 2: get a lot of clicks. It's funny because we spoke
- 23:31Speaker 2: about Steph Clare-Smith's husband, Josh Miller's vasectomy on our podcast
- 23:35Speaker 2: probably a couple of months ago now. And when you
- 23:37Speaker 2: look at the analytics, that headline got a lot of downloads.
- 23:41Speaker 2: And I think it's because of the term vasectomy. We
- 23:44Speaker 2: had a bit of back and forth about whether we
- 23:46Speaker 2: should use it in the title. And I mean, I'm
- 23:48Speaker 2: glad we did. It worked.
- 23:49Speaker 3: Should we use it in this title? Yeah, maybe Maddie
- 23:53Speaker 3: J's vasectomy.
- 23:54Speaker 2: If that does end up being the title, you know
- 23:56Speaker 2: why we've used it.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Well, Laura did say that it was this experience that
- 24:00Speaker 1: seemed to put fear into Matty J about having a
- 24:03Speaker 1: fourth child and that actually tipped him over the edge
- 24:05Speaker 1: of trying to lock in a time for his vasectomy.
- 24:08Speaker 2: So, I mean, it's worked in her favour there.
- 24:10Speaker 3: Well, that is where we're going to leave things today.
- 24:13Speaker 2: If you do enjoy the podcast, we would really appreciate
- 24:15Speaker 2: it if you could leave us a review.
- 24:17Speaker 3: This podcast was recorded on the traditional.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Land of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains. We
- 24:22Speaker 2: pay respect to elders past and present.
