Speaker 3: entire show to Doug today. I've normally as a guy
• 1:19
Speaker 3: and the producers will tell you that's meticulous about planning.
• 1:22
Speaker 3: Believe it or not, I actually put planning into the show.
• 1:23
Speaker 3: People wouldn't think I did, But I got no plan
• 1:27
Speaker 3: this morning. We're just going to bring people in studio
• 1:32
Speaker 3: or on the phone to talk about Doug Scaff. I
• 1:35
Speaker 3: have in studio with me Delegate Dana Ferrell, who, of course,
• 1:39
Speaker 3: in addition to knowing Doug from the political world, also
• 1:43
Speaker 3: new Doug through HD Media. Delegate, thank you for joining
• 1:46
Speaker 3: us this morning. Thank you, Dave. I have with me
• 1:49
Speaker 3: Steve Animal from ninety eight seven A Mountain Wild, a
• 1:52
Speaker 3: wonderful classic rock, a very very close friend of Doug
• 1:55
Speaker 3: scaff The mayor of Charleston, Amy Schulder Goodwin, is going
• 1:59
Speaker 3: to be joining this little bit later on, and I
• 2:00
Speaker 3: don't know who else is going to come in here.
• 2:02
Speaker 3: I'll be honest with you, We're just devoting this entire
• 2:04
Speaker 3: show to Doug. I do want to start though, I
• 2:07
Speaker 3: have on the phone. I've got two people that knew
• 2:09
Speaker 3: him very well, and oddly enough, because it's Doug scaff
• 2:15
  Speaker 3: one is a Republican and one's a Democrat. Perfect let's
• 2:19
Speaker 3: go to the phones. Let's talk to County commission President
• 2:21
Speaker 3: here Kanawha County Ben Selango, and also Attorney General JB. McCuskey. Commissioner,
• 2:28
Speaker 3: thank you for joining us today.
• 2:29
Speaker 4: Hey, thanks for having me. I was devastated when I
• 2:33
Speaker 4: learned the news yesterday. I seriously could not believe it.
• 2:37
Speaker 4: I was incompletely shock.
• 2:38
  Speaker 3: And Attorney General j B.
• 2:39
Speaker 5: McCuskey, it's hard to really process this, and it's just
• 2:47
Speaker 5: when you think about Marissa and the boys, it's hard
• 2:50
Speaker 5: to really wrap your head around. I don't know, I
• 2:54
Speaker 5: don't know what we need, but they're going to need
• 2:55
Speaker 5: a lot of help.
• 2:57
  Speaker 6: JB.
• 2:58
Speaker 3: Talk about your relationship with doug'scat.
• 3:03
Speaker 5: Doug is one of the most joyful people I think
• 3:07
Speaker 5: I've ever met, and it didn't really matter what happened
• 3:11
Speaker 5: during the day in politics. With Doug, you always knew
• 3:15
Speaker 5: that when the community needed something, Doug was going to
• 3:19
Speaker 5: be the first person there. And you also always knew
• 3:22
Speaker 5: if you needed something, Doug would be the first person
• 3:25
Speaker 5: you could call if you wanted and so he was
• 3:28
Speaker 5: sort of this this larger than life figure in politics
• 3:32
Speaker 5: that was an actual friend to almost all of us.
• 3:36
Speaker 5: And that is a skill that has been lost, and
• 3:39
Speaker 5: it's something that honestly, we should all try to aspire to.
• 3:44
Speaker 3: Commissioner the best commissioner.
• 3:47
Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I was thinking back yesterday. I was
• 3:51
Speaker 4: actually in law school when Doug was an undergrad up
• 3:53
Speaker 4: at WU. I have known him forever, and I remember
• 3:57
Speaker 4: a good friend of mine, Rob Berthall, called me, it
• 3:59
Speaker 4: was probably two thousand and seven, two thousand and eight,
• 4:01
Speaker 4: and said, I want you to come over and meet
• 4:03
Speaker 4: this this young man. It was his very first political
• 4:07
Speaker 4: fundraising event, and he said he has the intelligence and
• 4:12
Speaker 4: the charisma to be governor one day. And I remember
• 4:14
Speaker 4: I went over and I had known Doug already, but
• 4:18
Speaker 4: went over and chatted with him with that fundraiser, and
• 4:21
Speaker 4: you know, we were friends for a very long time,
• 4:23
Speaker 4: and Doug was always always had a smile on his face.
• 4:28
Speaker 4: You know, even sometimes he and I would argue and fight,
• 4:30
Speaker 4: typically about w sports, but we would always you know,
• 4:34
Speaker 4: he was always just so happy. And I'm just I
• 4:38
Speaker 4: feel terrible for his family, you know, Marson and the
• 4:41
Speaker 4: boys and Doug Senior and his mom. I called them
• 4:45
Speaker 4: yesterday and I'm just heartbreaking, absolutely heartbreaking news.
• 4:50
Speaker 3: And again I'm sure everyone knows the news, but now
• 4:53
Speaker 3: he was killed in a automobile accident on I seventy
• 4:56
Speaker 3: nine yesterday and it happened to I think just after
• 5:00
Speaker 3: four or four thirty or so yesterday afternoon. And it
• 5:03
Speaker 3: was just two weeks ago, guys that I had Doug
• 5:06
Speaker 3: Scaff on the show. I wanted it. He was so
• 5:08
Speaker 3: excited about taking over Joe Fazios and I asked him
• 5:11
Speaker 3: to come on the show and talk and talk about
• 5:15
Speaker 3: it in the interview. It's you know, it's a surreal
• 5:18
Speaker 3: moment in radio when i get out of the shower
• 5:20
Speaker 3: this morning and I'm listening to myself interviewing Doug Scaff
• 5:24
Speaker 3: from two weeks ago, and just the enthusiasm in his voice.
• 5:28
Speaker 3: But that was Doug. Guy, Dana let me and I
• 5:31
Speaker 3: know you guys are out of town and you're traveling everything,
• 5:33
Speaker 3: so I'll get to you in a minute. I said,
• 5:35
Speaker 3: this has no this thing has no rules. So Attorney
• 5:38
Speaker 3: General McCuskey, I know you're very busy today, but I'm
• 5:41
Speaker 3: going to give just give you the final thirty seconds
• 5:44
Speaker 3: or so to just whatever you want to say about
• 5:46
  Speaker 3: Doug scaff.
• 5:48
Speaker 5: I think that Doug will leave eleventh legacy that I
• 5:53
Speaker 5: don't know that he knew he was leaving. And he
• 5:56
Speaker 5: was truly one of the great champions for where he
• 5:59
Speaker 5: was from. And he was an incredible father, and he
• 6:03
Speaker 5: was a great husband, and he was a great person.
• 6:06
Speaker 5: And it's hard to imagine what the capital and what
• 6:09
Speaker 5: Charleston is going to be like without him. And I
• 6:12
Speaker 5: think that's probably the hardest part for me and for
• 6:15
Speaker 5: so many people, is that he was who so many
• 6:19
Speaker 5: of us leaned on for so many things, and I
• 6:23
Speaker 5: just can't It's just hard to really wrap my head around.
• 6:26
Speaker 5: But I think what Ben said is perfect. He was
• 6:29
Speaker 5: just a joyful, great person who's going to be missed
• 6:32
Speaker 5: by so many people.
• 6:33
Speaker 3: All Right, the Attorney General JM. McCaskey, I appreciate it.
• 6:38
Speaker 3: Will let you continue on with your day, And Commissioner
• 6:40
Speaker 3: Silango will we'll let you do the same thing that.
• 6:45
  Speaker 7: JB did.
• 6:46
Speaker 4: Tara and I were scrolling through our photos last night
• 6:49
Speaker 4: of i mean just probably ten or fifteen years of
• 6:53
Speaker 4: pictures with Doug and came across the photo of us
• 6:57
Speaker 4: together and we're all doing the horns down, you know,
• 7:00
Speaker 4: at a WU Texas game, and you know, just so
• 7:04
Speaker 4: many great memories of being around Doug and watching his energy,
• 7:10
Speaker 4: and you know it is an incredible entrepreneur and just
• 7:14
Speaker 4: brought so much to the community. He took over the
• 7:18
Speaker 4: working with his best friend Doug Reynolds and working at
• 7:22
Speaker 4: HD Media, and you know, I had the privilege of
• 7:26
Speaker 4: working with them for a while. And he's he's just
• 7:30
Speaker 4: going to be missed. He leaves behind a wonderful, wonderful family,
• 7:36
Speaker 4: three great boys, and you know, hopefully, hopefully they're going
• 7:40
Speaker 4: to be able to just pick up and carry on.
• 7:43
  Speaker 4: But I don't know how you do it. I don't
• 7:45
Speaker 4: know how anybody does that after you lose a father,
• 7:50
Speaker 4: you know, so young, and his parents lost a lost
• 7:53
  Speaker 4: a son, and I just can't imagine. So we're all
• 7:57
Speaker 4: praying for them, all right.
• 7:59
Speaker 3: Not a NDO Commission President, Been Slango. I appreciate you
• 8:01
Speaker 3: being on the show. Thanks a lot, Thanks for having me,
• 8:03
Speaker 3: all right, Steve Animal ninety eight seven, Amount the Wild,
• 8:05
Speaker 3: a wonderful classic rock. Your thoughts of doug'scaf.
• 8:09
Speaker 8: Awesome, dude, awesome, like they were saying the energy. I
• 8:13
Speaker 8: think we were all inspired by Doug, I mean the state,
• 8:18
Speaker 8: like you said, not only thinking about the loss, but
• 8:21
Speaker 8: thinking about what he brought to the table every day,
• 8:24
Speaker 8: and it was positive energy, always happy.
• 8:27
Speaker 3: How can I help?
• 8:28
Speaker 8: What can I do? I think we can Hopefully I'll
• 8:31
Speaker 8: learn a lesson from Doug. That be luck, Doug, be upbeat,
• 8:35
Speaker 8: be happy, go get it. You know, if I can
• 8:38
Speaker 8: lend a hands, let me know.
• 8:40
Speaker 3: I got a message here from a gentleman by the
• 8:42
Speaker 3: name of Ernest Blevans who sent me a Facebook message
• 8:46
Speaker 3: and he said, as you remember, I ran against Doug
• 8:50
Speaker 3: in twenty twenty two for the House of del like
• 8:51
Speaker 3: it's wild at the time political opponents. We had a
• 8:53
Speaker 3: great campaign, which he won. He was always kind to me,
• 8:57
Speaker 3: with good chats from time to time, even pointing me
• 9:00
Speaker 3: in twenty twenty three as my kids served as a
• 9:05
Speaker 3: page for him, and he encouraged me to run again
• 9:07
Speaker 3: in twenty twenty four. I mean, and Dana Delegate Dana Ferrell,
• 9:11
Speaker 3: that's too Doug scaff was. I mean, he really was.
• 9:15
Speaker 3: You know, the run for Secretary of State that he
• 9:18
Speaker 3: did last year, and it was a it was a
• 9:20
Speaker 3: crowded primary. You know something we don't hear about a
• 9:22
Speaker 3: lot and even and it was I don want to
• 9:26
Speaker 3: say it was a bitter campaign, but it's a tough campaign.
• 9:30
Speaker 3: And he said to me, he said, hey, look, I
• 9:33
Speaker 3: don't have no ill will toward any of these people.
• 9:35
Speaker 3: It's just it's just politics. That that's who scaff was delegate.
• 9:41
Speaker 8: Yeah, we don't save babies or lives.
• 9:44
Speaker 7: We just try to help people.
• 9:46
Speaker 3: That's really it. No, And you know, chime in here.
• 9:49
Speaker 9: I think you know you first of all, when you
• 9:52
Speaker 9: look at that Secretary of State race, I recall, you know,
• 9:55
Speaker 9: we were in the office and Doug told me and
• 9:57
Speaker 9: he was thinking about doing that at the time when
• 9:59
Speaker 9: he first got in, I think, are you sure you
• 10:01
Speaker 9: want to you know, it's.
• 10:02
Speaker 3: A state wide race. You want to do this?
• 10:03
Speaker 9: And he said, yeah, you know, I think I think
• 10:06
Speaker 9: I've got everything I need in the momentum.
• 10:08
Speaker 3: And I really do think that.
• 10:10
Speaker 9: You know, he had a very good shot at it
• 10:12
Speaker 9: up until and of course when Warner came in, you
• 10:16
Speaker 9: know the name there. I knew it was going to
• 10:17
Speaker 9: be very tough for him, and I think he knew
• 10:19
Speaker 9: that too, but you know, he never stopped. He went
• 10:22
Speaker 9: out and in fact, one of the missions that have
• 10:25
Speaker 9: this week had go was he still has this big
• 10:30
Speaker 9: scaff for Secretary of State banner out on I seventy
• 10:32
Speaker 9: seven there there in my district that I said, you know,
• 10:35
Speaker 9: when you get that down, and uh but uh, I
• 10:39
Speaker 9: understand why he didn't go get it down after the whole.
• 10:41
Speaker 3: Encided up with the snake bites nice and the fact
• 10:44
Speaker 3: that he could he could stare that in the face
• 10:47
Speaker 3: and then and then laugh about it. I mean I
• 10:49
Speaker 3: did a hop he did an interview with him, like
• 10:50
Speaker 3: maybe the next day or so. I did one a
• 10:52
Speaker 3: few days after that, and he was laughing about it.
• 10:54
Speaker 3: He was on the show two weeks ago talking about
• 10:56
Speaker 3: all the problems that he still has and he knew
• 10:58
Speaker 3: he was gonna have it for the rest of his
• 10:59
Speaker 3: life because of that snake bite. And he's he's and
• 11:02
  Speaker 3: he's laughing about it, because that's that's Doug's caaff. Talk
• 11:05
Speaker 3: about your relationship on a professional level outside politics, through
• 11:09
Speaker 3: through through through media.
• 11:10
Speaker 9: Yeah, and it's it's going to be a tough morning,
• 11:13
Speaker 9: tough few days at ast media because.
• 11:18
  Speaker 3: Uh sorry, that's all right, that's it's it's all good.
• 11:21
Speaker 7: Doug was asty media.
• 11:24
Speaker 9: And he he brought us all together as a team
• 11:27
Speaker 9: over there. And you know how it is in in media,
• 11:30
Speaker 9: you guys, you spend hours here together and you work,
• 11:34
Speaker 9: you plan, and you you go through a lot together
• 11:37
Speaker 9: and you become family.
• 11:38
Speaker 3: And and I think that's the.
• 11:40
Speaker 9: Way we're over there, and you just Tuesdays are a
• 11:42
Speaker 9: big planning days over there. Yesterday morning, Doug was in Morgantown,
• 11:47
Speaker 9: but he was on the phone conference call with us
• 11:49
Speaker 9: and we were going over you know, a typical business
• 11:52
Speaker 9: and looking ahead, and Doug was just like everybody said, positive, upbeat,
• 11:57
Speaker 9: look at what we're going to do football.
• 11:58
Speaker 3: You know, we're already planning for football.
• 12:00
Speaker 2: He's in live stream there.
• 12:02
Speaker 9: And then after me, I talked to him again individually
• 12:06
Speaker 9: at lunch yesterday and we talked more about, you know,
• 12:11
Speaker 9: some of our plans that were, you know, this coming week,
• 12:15
Speaker 9: what we're going to do with a couple of our accounts.
• 12:17
Speaker 7: And uh then I switched gears.
• 12:20
Speaker 9: And said, hey, you know, what do you what are
• 12:22
Speaker 9: you going to do because he had already signed up
• 12:23
Speaker 9: to run for senate State Senate here in the seventeenth district,
• 12:28
Speaker 9: and uh, I said, you know, have you got to
• 12:30
Speaker 9: start on it. He said, I've been so busy with
• 12:32
Speaker 9: the restaurant thing, and said, of course that was Doug.
• 12:35
Speaker 9: He had his hands and everything, and uh he said,
• 12:37
Speaker 9: but you know that's something, you know, we'll get on.
• 12:39
Speaker 9: He gets me to get back in here, and it's just,
• 12:42
Speaker 9: you know what hit me is. You know, that was
• 12:43
Speaker 9: four hours before the accident, and you know he had
• 12:47
Speaker 9: no other thought than he was thinking ahead. I mean, always,
• 12:50
Speaker 9: as you said, he Doug was a guy that had
• 12:53
Speaker 9: a vision for things and he could make them happen.
• 12:56
Speaker 9: He surrounded himself with people that would help him make
• 12:58
Speaker 9: him happen. This is a huge loss for the state
• 13:01
Speaker 9: of West Virginia and especially here in Kanall Valley.
• 13:05
Speaker 3: Had a text here from Tony Hodge, who is the
• 13:09
Speaker 3: vice chair of the state Republican Party. So Doug was
• 13:12
Speaker 3: very kind and gracious towards me. We talked a lot
• 13:14
Speaker 3: about the newspaper he took over, and he hosted me
• 13:17
Speaker 3: on his program outside the Echo Chamber. Whether we agreed
• 13:20
Speaker 3: on politics or not, he always was respectful and carrying
• 13:23
Speaker 3: us up with honor. He was very funny too, and
• 13:24
Speaker 3: that's what I remember is that smile man.
• 13:27
Speaker 9: You know, and in politics, let me say there, Doug
• 13:30
Speaker 9: was a very common sense candidate legislator when I know
• 13:35
Speaker 9: in there it wasn't about Republican or Democrat to him.
• 13:38
Speaker 9: I think he just tried to look at the issues
• 13:40
Speaker 9: and like most of us up there and try to say, Okay,
• 13:43
Speaker 9: you know what's the right thing to do here by
• 13:44
  Speaker 9: the people.
• 13:44
Speaker 7: And that's the Doug that I knew.
• 13:46
Speaker 3: All Right, Tell good, I appreciate you coming in today.
• 13:50
  Speaker 3: I know I've got I don't know who else going
• 13:52
Speaker 3: to be on the show. I really don't know. So
• 13:54
Speaker 3: you're welcome to You're welcome to hang out, but I
• 13:56

Speaker 3: former Legislator Doug scaff and Delegate Hollis. Hollis Lewis will
• 15:57
Speaker 3: be on with us here moment momentarily. Also, just got
• 16:00
Speaker 3: a message from Delegate JB. Acres and uh, I'm trying
• 16:05
Speaker 3: to navigate everything here. So yeah, Delegate Acres, if you
• 16:09
Speaker 3: we're gonna have one ahead of you, I think because
• 16:12
Speaker 3: he's I know, Delegate Acres was on the road, So
• 16:13
Speaker 3: we're gonna have one ahead of you. But let's just
• 16:16
  Speaker 3: say nine thirty.
• 16:16
  Speaker 7: How's that done?
• 16:19
Speaker 3: If he's listening to us right now, Uh, let me
• 16:21
Speaker 3: let me bring in Hollis Lewis. Delegate Hollis Lewis, We'll
• 16:25
Speaker 3: get you to let you get in and get settled there.
• 16:26
Speaker 3: Thank you for thank you being on the show today.
• 16:28
Speaker 7: Sir, thank you, thank you for having me.
• 16:30
Speaker 3: You come in with tears in your eyes.
• 16:31
  Speaker 10: Man.
• 16:32
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 16:33
  Speaker 10: Man.
• 16:33
Speaker 13: First of all, I just want to send you know,
• 16:35
Speaker 13: prayers and condolences to his wife and children, his uh,
• 16:39
Speaker 13: his family, you know, you know him. You know, Doug
• 16:46
Speaker 13: was just a awesome dude, smiling, jovial, always like a
• 16:51
Speaker 13: good energy and you know, but not for Doug, I wouldn't,
• 16:54
Speaker 13: you know, be in a position that I'm in. He uh,
• 16:57
Speaker 13: you know, he quietly supported me behind the scenes and
• 17:00
Speaker 13: you know, and supported what I was doing and you know,
• 17:03
Speaker 13: and providing me with a lot of good tips and
• 17:05
Speaker 13: tools to you know, be in this position. So yeah,
• 17:11
Speaker 13: but most importantly, I just want to send out macondolences
• 17:13
  Speaker 13: to his family.
• 17:14
Speaker 3: And I think we have a delegate Sean Hornbuckle who
• 17:17
Speaker 3: is on the phone with his delegate. Good morning, Welcome
• 17:19
Speaker 3: to the show, morning, Dave.
• 17:21
  Speaker 14: How you doing.
• 17:22
  Speaker 3: I'm doing fine.
• 17:23
  Speaker 15: Uh.
• 17:23
Speaker 3: It's like a you know, I've got well Delegate Pharaoh.
• 17:27
Speaker 3: I appreciate you coming in, Uh, Steve Animal, I appreciate
• 17:30
Speaker 3: you being here. I'm just trying to usher people in
• 17:33
  Speaker 3: here right now.
• 17:33
  Speaker 10: Uh uh.
• 17:34
Speaker 3: Your thoughts on on on Doug's scaff circle ahead.
• 17:38
Speaker 14: Oh, I mean that's uh, I'm still you know, in
• 17:42
Speaker 14: a bit of shock and uh stunned about my good
• 17:48
Speaker 14: friend leaving us way too soon from this earth. But
• 17:54
Speaker 14: he was an amazing individual, very gregarious, outgoing.
• 17:59
  Speaker 16: Uh.
• 18:00
Speaker 14: You know, I'm just trying to make for h that
• 18:03
Speaker 14: you know, the Charleston area in West Virginia for that matter,
• 18:07
Speaker 14: was you know, was able to prosper. So you know,
• 18:10
Speaker 14: I'm somewhat still had and lost words. You know, I've
• 18:14
Speaker 14: known Doug for a good bit, but this past decade,
• 18:20
Speaker 14: I would say we became really tight, uh, family like
• 18:24
Speaker 14: and so it's just a hard to wrap my head
• 18:27
  Speaker 14: around right now.
• 18:29
Speaker 13: All else you want to follow up with that? Yeah,
• 18:31
  Speaker 13: like I said, I haven't. I didn't get the chance
• 18:34
Speaker 13: to know is Doug as long as some of our
• 18:36
Speaker 13: other delicate teammates. But like I said, he was just
• 18:39
Speaker 13: a great guy. I remember when I was campaigning, you know,
• 18:43
Speaker 13: I was so in campaign mode. I'm just knocking doors.
• 18:45
Speaker 13: You know, has mayor good ones, suggested man marry even
• 18:48
Speaker 13: good one is the chat I'm knocking doors, knocking doors,
• 18:51
Speaker 13: and whose door did not knock on?
• 18:53
  Speaker 17: I did?
• 18:53
Speaker 7: I don't even know if I looked at the name.
• 18:55
Speaker 13: I'm just knocking doors and I end up knocking his door,
• 18:58
Speaker 13: you know, and it's at the time when he was
• 19:00
Speaker 13: still recovering from the snake bike.
• 19:01
Speaker 7: So you invited me in.
• 19:02
Speaker 13: I got to you know, meet his meet his kids
• 19:04
Speaker 13: and his wife, and he you know, just talking, just
• 19:08
Speaker 13: kind of shooting and has you know, if you know
• 19:09
Speaker 13: Doug's that's what you do when you talk to him
• 19:11
Speaker 13: and meet him. So you know, it was just stuff
• 19:14
Speaker 13: like that and trick or treating. His kids would trick
• 19:16
Speaker 13: or treat with my kids in our neighborhood and everything
• 19:19
Speaker 13: like that. So, like I said, just kind of on
• 19:21
Speaker 13: the professional and the delegate side, and you know, on
• 19:25
Speaker 13: the personal family side, we were really getting to know
• 19:28
Speaker 13: each other. And his newspaper is always supported my articles.
• 19:32
Speaker 13: I wrote a bunch of op eds and so I
• 19:34
Speaker 13: just you know, Doug was always a guy if you
• 19:36
Speaker 13: if you were on his team, you were on his team.
• 19:39
Speaker 13: And uh just his delegate hornbookal mention. There's a guy's
• 19:42
Speaker 13: a caliber to stay around Charles and then try to
• 19:44
Speaker 13: make our city and state better.
• 19:47
  Speaker 7: You know, it's it's a it's a big loss.
• 19:49
Speaker 3: And Delegate hornbackle before we let you go. I do
• 19:52
Speaker 3: want to say this is interesting because I started putting
• 19:55
Speaker 3: this show together last night and I don't really have
• 19:57
Speaker 3: a lot of planning into this. I'm just like, you
• 19:59
Speaker 3: want to come on, come in. And it just so
• 20:01
Speaker 3: happened that the first two people that I got on
• 20:05
Speaker 3: the show because of scheduling, we're a Republican and a Democrat.
• 20:08
Speaker 3: It was the Attorney General h.
• 20:10
  Speaker 2: JB.
• 20:10
Speaker 3: Mccusky and canow County Commission President Ben s Lango, a
• 20:15
Speaker 3: Republican Democrat. Don't you think delegant Hornbockael. But that's kind
• 20:18
Speaker 3: of that's kind of a personification of Doug Scaff that
• 20:22
Speaker 3: the first two guests on my show were one Republican,
• 20:24
  Speaker 3: one Democrat.
• 20:25
Speaker 14: I mean he was both. I guess that is very
• 20:31
Speaker 14: very fit. And he was a good republic summer but
• 20:36
Speaker 14: a good friend. I mean, heck, you know Scaff he
• 20:40
Speaker 14: hosted my first and a fund raiser in Charleston at
• 20:44
Speaker 14: the Van before it was the Hell House.
• 20:47
  Speaker 18: Uh.
• 20:47
Speaker 14: I mean, we have so many memories. I mean, you know,
• 20:49
Speaker 14: I don't want to get two emotions right now, but
• 20:53
Speaker 14: U this is the h this is the first yeater
• 20:58
Speaker 14: about so in her eight years that we haven't taken
• 21:02
Speaker 14: our our annual trip, our annual guys trip in the summer,
• 21:08
Speaker 14: which was this past weekend, and it sort of bothers
• 21:11
Speaker 14: me a little bit, you know, just thinking with the
• 21:13
Speaker 14: head trash that you know, had, we just be coming
• 21:16
Speaker 14: back in town Sunday or Monday, maybe maybe things will
• 21:19
Speaker 14: be a little bit different. And so I'm having a
• 21:23
Speaker 14: hard time with that as well. But you know, at
• 21:26
Speaker 14: the end of the day, I know that I'm going
• 21:30
Speaker 14: to do whatever that I can, uh, you know, for
• 21:32
Speaker 14: those three little boys, and and uh and Marissa, whether
• 21:36
Speaker 14: it's if I'm in the Charleston area and she needs help,
• 21:39
Speaker 14: you know, picking up one of those boys from practice,
• 21:42
Speaker 14: I will, I will make myself available because I know
• 21:46
Speaker 14: people already mentioned it, but Doug was there for me.
• 21:49
Speaker 14: He showed up for me in a very big way.
• 21:52
Speaker 14: He has helped with my maturation, uh, not only as
• 21:56
Speaker 14: a public servant and helping me to ascend the things,
• 22:01
Speaker 14: but also in business. And you know, I just I
• 22:06
Speaker 14: hate that we're not going to be able to see
• 22:08
Speaker 14: through some of those projects that we talked about. It's
• 22:12
  Speaker 14: just a it's just a lot right now. But I
• 22:16
Speaker 14: love him and love his family, and I want to
• 22:19
Speaker 14: make sure that we carck his name on Barry Strong
• 22:22
Speaker 14: in the state of West Virginia.
• 22:23
Speaker 3: Delicate, Sean Hornbuckle. I appreciate you being here. We'll let
• 22:27
Speaker 3: you go. Thanks a lot man, Thanks for being here, Delegate.
• 22:30
Speaker 14: Thank you all right.
• 22:31
Speaker 3: Charleston may Or Amy Schuler, good one has stopped by, Mayor,
• 22:35
  Speaker 3: How are you.
• 22:36
Speaker 19: I'm listening and loving to hear all of these amazing
• 22:42
Speaker 19: stories about our friend Doug.
• 22:44
  Speaker 3: I mean, it's.
• 22:46
Speaker 19: I do know this at fifty four. You you judge people,
• 22:51
Speaker 19: not in always the good times, but the really hard times.
• 22:54
  Speaker 10: Right.
• 22:54
Speaker 19: Everybody can be there for you for a birthday or
• 22:57
Speaker 19: an anniversary or a party or it's super fun. Everybody's
• 23:01
Speaker 19: there for you that during those times. But the things
• 23:05
Speaker 19: that I know about Doug's gaff are the things that
• 23:08
Speaker 19: you saw either on social or you're hearing now Dave
• 23:12
Speaker 19: that during folks worst times when you really need a pickup,
• 23:17
Speaker 19: if people know about it or not. And the thing
• 23:20
Speaker 19: that is just so amazing, and it is just so
• 23:24
Speaker 19: inspiring and so great that his three little boys watched
• 23:28
  Speaker 19: this of him.
• 23:30
  Speaker 16: They're just darling.
• 23:31
Speaker 19: One is cuter than the next. They're just precious, rambunctious,
• 23:36
Speaker 19: energy like their dad, during loss, during health issues, during
• 23:46
Speaker 19: political fights, and it didn't matter if he lost to
• 23:50
Speaker 19: someone or he was in a had a disagreement with someone,
• 23:54
Speaker 19: he always came back. He was the constant professional. And
• 24:01
Speaker 19: that is what I will take away because especially in
• 24:04
Speaker 19: this rough and tumble world of politics, right, Hollis I mean,
• 24:08
Speaker 19: is it has become so nasty and so awful. There
• 24:11
Speaker 19: there are folks who run against people who never speak
• 24:13
Speaker 19: to folks or have this vitriol to them. That was
• 24:18
Speaker 19: not Delegate scaff It's almost like he took it and
• 24:20
Speaker 19: then just came back.
• 24:21
Speaker 4: That is what you know.
• 24:23
Speaker 19: As a parent, I think about that. As Doug, I
• 24:26
Speaker 19: can talk about he was student body president, he started
• 24:29
Speaker 19: the Up all Night which my kids have benefited from.
• 24:31
Speaker 19: He started the Mountain Air Maniacs. You know that energy,
• 24:34
Speaker 19: that enthusiasm, the good work that he's done, not only
• 24:37
Speaker 19: with the Guy's Night Out, and.
• 24:39
Speaker 16: I can list all of them.
• 24:40
Speaker 19: I mean, you don't have enough time in your show, Dave,
• 24:43
Speaker 19: or your afternoon show to do that. But the thing
• 24:46
Speaker 19: that I will remember and take away and try to
• 24:50
Speaker 19: again emulate and implement in my lives and influence my
• 24:54
Speaker 19: boys to do that It doesn't matter if you're on
• 24:57
Speaker 19: the other side. You said it best day, Republican Democrats.
• 25:00
Speaker 19: It doesn't matter if somebody is up against you or
• 25:03
Speaker 19: disagrees with you, that you come back and you are
• 25:08
Speaker 19: humble and you are gracious, and you give people the
• 25:10
Speaker 19: space and grace even if you're in conflict with them
• 25:14
Speaker 19: on an idea or a campaign or love or loss.
• 25:19
Speaker 19: And that is something that is really important. I think
• 25:21
Speaker 19: that we all take away. I can hardly open my
• 25:24
Speaker 19: Facebook up without crying.
• 25:27
Speaker 3: It was like every other post. Yeah, and what an.
• 25:31
Speaker 19: Influence, you know, I mean, And I hope that people
• 25:34
Speaker 19: see that and delicate Eric Eric Store too. I know,
• 25:37
Speaker 19: you know, everybody knows, you know, Delegate Store. She was
• 25:41
Speaker 19: a friend of a girlfriend of mine, one of my
• 25:43
Speaker 19: sister's closest friends, up and wheeling, and you know, she said,
• 25:46
Speaker 19: when I open up my page, I think, wow, he
• 25:49
Speaker 19: kind of weaved his way into so many of our
• 25:52
Speaker 19: lives and had such a great impact on not just
• 25:56
Speaker 19: political I mean, forget that, it's the guy at the
• 25:59
Speaker 19: you know, the seven eleven.
• 26:00
Speaker 7: He was like, oh yeah, sure, you know.
• 26:02
Speaker 19: Patty Hamilton talked about him this morning at a public post.
• 26:06
Speaker 19: Dave so I'm not saying something that she wouldn't want
• 26:09
Speaker 19: me to say. She was out and I think doing
• 26:11
Speaker 19: maybe a honkin' wave maybe with him and felt ill
• 26:15
Speaker 19: it was not okay and a little stumbly on her feet.
• 26:19
Speaker 19: He got her to the car, He stayed with her.
• 26:21
Speaker 19: He called nine one one, and not only did that,
• 26:24
Speaker 19: he took her to the hospital and he stayed with
• 26:26
Speaker 19: her until he knew that her family was there and
• 26:29
Speaker 19: he was taking care.
• 26:29
  Speaker 20: Of buddy oday.
• 26:30
Speaker 7: That's the deal. That is the deal right there.
• 26:34
Speaker 19: You know, it's it's super easy to put your face
• 26:36
Speaker 19: on you know, Facebook and post and it doesn't matter.
• 26:40
Speaker 19: Jim can tell you this, Hollis can tell you this.
• 26:43
Speaker 19: Other folks can tell you this. It is what you
• 26:46
Speaker 19: do behind closed doors and behind the scenes which really matters.
• 26:48
Speaker 3: At the end of the day.
• 26:49
Speaker 19: There is absolutely no one in his family that is
• 26:52
Speaker 19: sitting there looking at his shiny awards. There is nobody
• 26:55
Speaker 19: that called him a friend that is sitting there regurgitating
• 26:59
Speaker 19: all his alco leges. Today, they are taking away the
• 27:03
Speaker 19: things that should be on a shelf that aren't the
• 27:06
Speaker 19: things of his character and his nature that we all take.
• 27:09
Speaker 19: My mom always says, look at me and take all
• 27:12
Speaker 19: of the good. Take away all the good, and if
• 27:15
Speaker 19: I have any bad, let those fall to the floor.
• 27:17
Speaker 19: If we're going to take away anything from Doug scaff boy,
• 27:20
Speaker 19: there handfuls of great things that he gave to us.
• 27:23
Speaker 19: Imparted on all this, and.
• 27:26
  Speaker 7: We love them.
• 27:26
Speaker 3: I had a text here from Tony the Taylor, and
• 27:30
Speaker 3: he wanted to come in, but he said, can't make it.
• 27:33
Speaker 3: I just wanted to say Doug was a close friend, confidant,
• 27:36
Speaker 3: and I was surely miss our friendship. Prayers of comfort
• 27:38
Speaker 3: for his family is such a huge loss.
• 27:40
Speaker 19: He loved Tony so much.
• 27:41
Speaker 3: For our state. Jim Strawn is with us, trying to
• 27:45
Speaker 3: let Jimbo collect his collect a little.
• 27:48
Speaker 16: Bit hearing excuse me, I'm trying to be really strong.
• 27:54
Speaker 16: Mayor said it really well. His legacy, it's really deep.
• 28:03
Speaker 16: It runs through right through all of us, right through
• 28:07
Speaker 16: right through all of us. And I admired him and
• 28:12
Speaker 16: respected and he inspired me. His commitment to this community
• 28:18
Speaker 16: us as West Virginians canal alliance and Charlestonians unparallel.
• 28:25
  Speaker 2: His drive to.
• 28:28
Speaker 16: Help raise for those that needed it indirectly and directly
• 28:33
Speaker 16: just was second to none, infectious. His ability to include everybody.
• 28:44
Speaker 16: It didn't matter who your stance, he included you.
• 28:50
Speaker 7: He had a gift that was quite frankly, I.
• 28:55
  Speaker 20: Just marveled.
• 28:59
  Speaker 7: At it.
• 29:00
Speaker 16: Wow, look at you bringing all of us together. And
• 29:04
Speaker 16: he was so daring to do that.
• 29:09
  Speaker 7: So much.
• 29:11
Speaker 16: This is going to ripple through our state, in this
• 29:13
Speaker 16: valley for many months and years and decades to come.
• 29:18
Speaker 16: He had so much more to live for. I preach
• 29:21
Speaker 16: being strong. I'm here today. Try it being strong, Dave.
• 29:26
Speaker 16: I appreciate you reach it out to me. I didn't
• 29:29
Speaker 16: know what today was going to bring. I'm I'm here
• 29:35
Speaker 16: to lift one of the best people that I've ever
• 29:38
Speaker 16: known up, and that's why I'm here. I appreciate the opportunity.
• 29:44
Speaker 7: I'm just going to honor him.
• 29:46
  Speaker 9: Now.
• 29:46
Speaker 7: I'm gonna work harder than ever.
• 29:48
Speaker 16: I'm going to work harder than everything.
• 29:49
Speaker 19: And coming from somebody like Jim Strong, who people look
• 29:52
Speaker 19: at as energy and positivity. So think about that. Think
• 29:56
Speaker 19: about if it's Jim Strong who is looking to Doug
• 30:00
Speaker 19: scaff to say you've got positivity and energy, By golly,
• 30:04
Speaker 19: that's that might be the highest compliment.
• 30:07
Speaker 3: Let's go now to a state Democratic Party chair and
• 30:10
Speaker 3: delegate Mike Pushkin, who is out of town unfortunately not
• 30:13
Speaker 3: able to join us in the studio. Michael, good morning,
• 30:16
Speaker 3: Welcome to the show.
• 30:18
Speaker 18: Good morning. They First, I appreciate you having the show
• 30:21
Speaker 18: and devoting the show to Doug and Doug's memory. Heart
• 30:26
Speaker 18: goes out to Marissa and his family and everybody from
• 30:30
Speaker 18: the mayor, Jim, everybody. That's that's shared from the heart today.
• 30:36
Speaker 18: Doug had an ability that I strive to have and
• 30:41
Speaker 18: often falls short off, and that's he had the ability
• 30:43
Speaker 18: to let things just roll off his back.
• 30:46
  Speaker 16: And that's true.
• 30:48
Speaker 18: I think last time he was on, I don't know
• 30:49
Speaker 18: if it was your show at the state Wide show, Dave,
• 30:51
Speaker 18: but last time he was on, he was talking about,
• 30:53
Speaker 18: you know, the campaigns over, people need to go.
• 30:55
Speaker 3: That was this show on the twenty second Mike on
• 30:58
  Speaker 3: twenty second.
• 30:59
Speaker 4: Yeah, Well that's how he was.
• 31:02
Speaker 18: It's so rare in politics these days that he could
• 31:05
Speaker 18: drop the politics when it came time to get to
• 31:07
Speaker 18: work because he was a true public servant. He loved
• 31:11
Speaker 18: his community. And that's why they put together the group
• 31:13
Speaker 18: to purchase thasios. It's not because they needed another project,
• 31:18
Speaker 18: because he wanted to say to Charleston Institution because he
• 31:20
Speaker 18: loved Charleston and that's just the kind of things that
• 31:23
Speaker 18: he did. And I just, you know, above all else,
• 31:28
Speaker 18: you know, knowing them and being his friend. I saw
• 31:30
Speaker 18: how devoted he was to his family. And that's all
• 31:32
Speaker 18: I can think about today is is a Marsa and
• 31:35
  Speaker 18: those boys?
• 31:36
  Speaker 7: All right?
• 31:37
Speaker 4: Hey, Mike, how they get through this?
• 31:40
  Speaker 7: All right?
• 31:40
Speaker 3: Mike, we appreciate you being here and calling us out.
• 31:43

Speaker 3: type of person the Doug scaff was, first want to
• 31:55
Speaker 3: pray for God to please be with his family and friends.
• 31:58
Speaker 3: Even more so, we should all remind ourselves and other
• 32:00
Speaker 3: that Doug was an example of who we are as
• 32:03
  Speaker 3: a nation, a state, a community, and a human beings
• 32:06
Speaker 3: we should endlessly strive to be. I have no idea

Speaker 3: Welcome back to the show, nineteen away from ten. We're
• 34:34
Speaker 3: just paying tribute to Doug Dougscaff today. I have a
• 34:37
Speaker 3: statement here from State Treasurer Larry Pack. Larry was scheduled
• 34:41
Speaker 3: to be on the show today to talk about something
• 34:43
Speaker 3: totally different, and then I reached out last night to
• 34:45
Speaker 3: carry who to sec formerly of our company here who
• 34:47
Speaker 3: now is with mister Pack And he was going to
• 34:52
Speaker 3: try to do it, and he just couldn't do it.
• 34:54
Speaker 3: And that's understandable. Everybody processes grief in different ways, and
• 34:59
Speaker 3: I understand. But the statement says, from say treasure Larry Pack,
• 35:02
Speaker 3: I am a loss of words to accurately describe my
• 35:05
Speaker 3: shock and sadness over the passinger Doug's scaff at such
• 35:08
Speaker 3: a young age. When I think about Doug, I first
• 35:10
Speaker 3: go to his beloved children and his lovely wife. Doug
• 35:12
Speaker 3: wore many hats, but the most important to him was husband, father, son, brother,
• 35:16
Speaker 3: nephew and cousin. He was so proud of his family
• 35:19
Speaker 3: and quick to tell you about them. Doug was also
• 35:20
Speaker 3: a leader in the community and state. I always thought
• 35:23
Speaker 3: he was just getting started. Doug had the ability to
• 35:26
Speaker 3: connect with people from all walks of life. That ability
• 35:29
Speaker 3: comes from his love of others. His life is indeed fragile, short,
• 35:32
Speaker 3: and often so unfair. I will continue to pray for
• 35:35
Speaker 3: his family and attempt to honor Doug by showing love
• 35:37
Speaker 3: and grace to others. That statement from State Treasurer Larry Pack.
• 35:42
Speaker 3: Let's go now to delicate jb Acres. Good morning, sir,
• 35:45
Speaker 3: and welcome to the show.
• 35:47
Speaker 21: Hey, good morning, Dave. I wish it was for different reasons,
• 35:49
Speaker 21: but I appreciate you having me.
• 35:50
Speaker 3: On your memories of Doug scaff Sir, go ahead.
• 35:54
Speaker 21: Well you invited me to make a call, which I
• 35:57
Speaker 21: appreciate you got. I think through other folks like mayor
• 35:59
Speaker 21: Bis Studio. She you know, I would say she had
• 36:01
Speaker 21: a closer personal relationship with Doug than me. Someone can
• 36:05
Speaker 21: pretend like, you know, I was Doug's best friend, but
• 36:08
Speaker 21: we were friendly. I've known Doug, you know for twenty
• 36:11
Speaker 21: plus years. My wife Mary Claire doing better than me.
• 36:16
Speaker 21: She used to talk to Doug quite a bit, and
• 36:18
Speaker 21: they used to text with each other a lot, and
• 36:20
Speaker 21: he just always a very gracious guy. I would guess
• 36:24
Speaker 21: that maybe one of the reasons he reached out to
• 36:25
Speaker 21: me is, you know a Republican Doug. You know, Doug
• 36:28
Speaker 21: for most of his political career was a Democrat, but
• 36:30
Speaker 21: he was gracious to everyone. I can say that genuinely.
• 36:33
Speaker 21: You know, you just read a message from Larry Pack
• 36:35
Speaker 21: to say Treasurer, who's a very staunch conservative. But I
• 36:39
Speaker 21: saw Treasurer Pack in the gym this morning. He and
• 36:41
Speaker 21: I go around the same time, and he was visibly
• 36:45
Speaker 21: upset about this. When I spoke with him, he brought
• 36:47
Speaker 21: it up. He's known the Skaff family for a long
• 36:50
Speaker 21: long time, and my wife Mary Clare was the first
• 36:54
Speaker 21: one to tell me yesterday. She was also I can tell.
• 36:57
Speaker 21: She approached me. You have these moments, Dave, when you
• 36:59
Speaker 21: know someone going to tell you bad news, and you
• 37:01
Speaker 21: can tell this something treat me is really wrong, and
• 37:03
Speaker 21: my mind started to race. I could tell something that happened,
• 37:06
Speaker 21: and she told me that that Doug had passed. It
• 37:08
Speaker 21: was not long after he had the wreck, and I
• 37:11
Speaker 21: physically turned my head to the side and said, oh
• 37:12
Speaker 21: my god, you start thinking about his family.
• 37:15
  Speaker 4: You know.
• 37:16
Speaker 21: I put on a post yesterday just primarily about his
• 37:18
Speaker 21: wife and his kids. Which is where our thoughts, im
• 37:20
Speaker 21: pro should be. But I want to say too, as
• 37:23
  Speaker 21: a dad, I didn't know Doug's mom or is his
• 37:26
Speaker 21: siblings really other than just caital meetings. But I've had
• 37:29
Speaker 21: some conversations with his dad. Super nice guy, and I
• 37:32
Speaker 21: just want to put some focus on Doug Senior for
• 37:34
Speaker 21: just a moment. As a father, Doug Senior adored his
• 37:39
Speaker 21: son in the mutuals. You know, they loved each other deeply.
• 37:43
Speaker 21: You could see it when they were together. It was
• 37:45
Speaker 21: just a great relationship. So just I just want to
• 37:49
Speaker 21: I'm not trying to, you know, point him out to
• 37:51
Speaker 21: the exclusion anyone else. Everyone in the family deserves the
• 37:54
Speaker 21: prayers and our thoughts. But that was a special relationship
• 37:57
Speaker 21: that that Doug Senior and Doug Junior had.
• 38:00
Speaker 3: It just really was Delica Jbacres, I appreciate you calling
• 38:04
Speaker 3: us up. Thanks a lot.
• 38:05
Speaker 21: Hey, thanks for having me on. You guys have a
• 38:07
  Speaker 21: great day.
• 38:07
  Speaker 7: Thank you.
• 38:07
Speaker 3: It's fifteen minutes away from ten County Commission. Natalie Tennant
• 38:10
Speaker 3: joins us. Now, good morning, welcome to the show.
• 38:13
Speaker 16: Good morning, this is a tough morning.
• 38:16
Speaker 6: We had a meeting earlier with the mayor and Charleston area,
• 38:20
Speaker 6: allnes is just so quiet, and you know, that's what
• 38:23
Speaker 6: I thought was one of the first things when I
• 38:27
Speaker 6: found out that his dad was the first one notified
• 38:31
Speaker 6: was Doug Senior. And there's just so there's so much
• 38:37
Speaker 6: that both of them touched. I think about being at
• 38:42
Speaker 6: the WVU Alumni Center and the staff family area in
• 38:49
Speaker 6: that corner, and I just saw Doug Senior at the
• 38:55
Speaker 6: ribbon cutting of Olive Tree. And what's interesting about that
• 38:59
Speaker 6: is that Doug scaff and that part of the community.
• 39:04
Speaker 6: A lot of people only know him as a candidate,
• 39:08
Speaker 6: an office holder, or you know, a politician. But that's
• 39:13
Speaker 6: the part of Doug that I loved, was his church
• 39:17
Speaker 6: community and his Lebanese community. And Delegate Acres just said
• 39:21
Speaker 6: it when there's such a special relationship that that Doug
• 39:26
Speaker 6: Senior and Doug Junior had. I was sitting there and
• 39:29
Speaker 6: talking with so many members of the church and actually
• 39:36
Speaker 6: Michael Jerus's mother in law and then her sisters, two sisters,
• 39:42
Speaker 6: and there I'm like, oh, is there only three girls? No,
• 39:44
Speaker 6: we had a son, we had a brother, and of course,
• 39:46
Speaker 6: you know, the son in any Lebanese family is always
• 39:50
Speaker 6: held up so high and that's when I knew about
• 39:54
Speaker 6: that that relationship that father and son Doug scaff had,
• 40:00
Speaker 6: and that the church and the Lebanese community, and that's
• 40:05
Speaker 6: maybe why Doug opened himself so much to make sure
• 40:10
Speaker 6: he was taking care of Knawa County, West Virginia, Charleston.
• 40:15
Speaker 6: Whether it was the newspaper, I know you all talked
• 40:17
Speaker 6: about this probably and coming back with the restaurant and
• 40:22
Speaker 6: things and things that needed. I think that Delegate Acres.
• 40:25
Speaker 6: The thing that I appreciate what he said, probably as
• 40:30
Speaker 6: much as anybody sitting here now at this desk beside me,
• 40:33
Speaker 6: is that that's where you do go. It goes back
• 40:36
  Speaker 6: to your family.
• 40:37
Speaker 19: And of course Delegate Acres would say as a father,
• 40:40
Speaker 19: it made me immediately think because to have to bury
• 40:43
Speaker 19: a child is just.
• 40:46
  Speaker 7: It's torture.
• 40:47
Speaker 19: And I appreciate his comments because that's that's where and
• 40:51
Speaker 19: he knew, as as the Delegate said, on a professional level,
• 40:56
Speaker 19: but it was deeper than that. I mean, it's you
• 40:58
Speaker 19: can tell that it's deeper than that, because Doug just
• 41:01
Speaker 19: didn't just allow folks to have a professional relationship with him,
• 41:06
Speaker 19: You had a personal relationship with them. So if you
• 41:09
Speaker 19: worked with him a day a week, an hour, or
• 41:11
Speaker 19: a decade. You had that impact and influence on him
• 41:15
Speaker 19: because it was positive.
• 41:16
Speaker 7: And I appreciate that one hundred percent.
• 41:18
Speaker 13: And you know a lot of times, you know, Charleston, Westerrginia,
• 41:20
Speaker 13: we get a bad rap and there's a lot of negativity.
• 41:23
Speaker 13: And what I appreciated by Doug most was he was
• 41:25
Speaker 13: trying to make this state, this area the best it
• 41:28
Speaker 13: can be by, you know, participating in our parades and restaurants,
• 41:32
Speaker 13: keeping our newspaper alive, doing things to make the lives
• 41:36
Speaker 13: of not only you know us as his colleagues, but
• 41:39
Speaker 13: the youth and everything better. So you know, I just
• 41:42
Speaker 13: appreciate that that bright smell, the good energy and his
• 41:47
Speaker 13: work that he did in this community in state.
• 41:49
Speaker 3: I mean, you read a text here, not only just
• 41:51
Speaker 3: one second. Let me read this text here and I'll
• 41:52
Speaker 3: get to you. It's so hard to believe that Doug
• 41:54
Speaker 3: is gone. My prayers are with his family. It's hard
• 41:56
Speaker 3: to imagine his life here without him. He was a
• 41:59
Speaker 3: good friend. And one year ago, yesterday he sent me
• 42:02
Speaker 3: a tax was checking on me. It's Doug, he said.
• 42:05
Speaker 3: As soon as he was able to get back on
• 42:07
Speaker 3: his feet, we would have to go to for some
• 42:08
Speaker 3: hot dogs for lunch.
• 42:09
Speaker 7: We never made it.
• 42:10
Speaker 3: Doug will be missed by so many who loved him.
• 42:12
Speaker 3: That's from Fred Albert, former American Federation of Teachers President
• 42:16
  Speaker 3: Commissioner Tenant.
• 42:18
Speaker 6: I'm just I mean, we all go to the family.
• 42:22
Speaker 6: How are we going to take care of those boys?
• 42:24
Speaker 6: I mean, I know that they have a community, and
• 42:26
Speaker 6: when we say, you know, we take we pray for
• 42:30
Speaker 6: your comfort and your strength. And the comfort may not
• 42:33
Speaker 6: come from us, but it comes from I'm hopeful, and
• 42:36
Speaker 6: I know, as I just relayed from last Thursday, I
• 42:39
Speaker 6: know that there is a community there. You know, the
• 42:45
Speaker 6: older one will know him well. I mean, I'm sorry
• 42:49
Speaker 6: I get too much in the weeds about how these
• 42:52
Speaker 6: these wonderful boys that he was so proud of will
• 42:56
Speaker 6: see their father. I don't want them to have to
• 42:59
Speaker 6: live in this, you know, this image of their father
• 43:05
Speaker 6: to be is to be him, but to be them,
• 43:08
Speaker 6: because that's what he would want them to be their
• 43:10
Speaker 6: own strength, And you know, maybe, I mean maybe we
• 43:15
Speaker 6: can just think of that and I just, you know,
• 43:18
Speaker 6: thank you, thank you for this opportunity just to sit
• 43:20
Speaker 6: and talk. And everyone else is is is you know,
• 43:25
Speaker 6: experiencing this, and as I was driving in, I heard
• 43:28
Speaker 6: Jim Strawn and I called Jim.
• 43:32
  Speaker 16: Yesterday.
• 43:32
Speaker 6: It's like, yeah, I'd never really been on this side
• 43:35
Speaker 6: before in such a way. I mean, Mayor, I know
• 43:39
Speaker 6: that you have because you get that first call when
• 43:41
Speaker 6: you hear things. And now being a new county commissioner,
• 43:44
Speaker 6: I got the first call from my president, Ben Selango.
• 43:47
Speaker 6: And then you know, we're all we're all doing our
• 43:52
Speaker 6: official things to help make sure that our community is strong. You,
• 43:56
Speaker 6: the city, me, the county and the state. How do
• 43:59
Speaker 6: we take here of each other?
• 44:01
Speaker 19: And and you know, your texture said something that I
• 44:05
Speaker 19: think a lot of us are feeling because I'm getting
• 44:07
Speaker 19: lots of text as I'm sitting here. You know what
• 44:09
Speaker 19: most of us instantly did and official duties aside, and
• 44:13
Speaker 19: I know I did it. I went to my text,
• 44:16
Speaker 19: I went to my last time.
• 44:18
Speaker 7: I talked to that.
• 44:20
Speaker 3: Yet I'll get there eventually, and I.
• 44:22
Speaker 19: Can hardly get through it because it was quintessential Doug
• 44:27
Speaker 19: scaff jovial. You know, we we joked about the pimento
• 44:32
Speaker 19: cheese and fruit because you know that's what I appreciate
• 44:34
Speaker 19: out phasios and the levity that he brought and even
• 44:39
Speaker 19: in hard conversations or support of conversations, he was just
• 44:43
Speaker 19: getting ready to host something for me next Tuesday. And
• 44:49
Speaker 19: that's just that's what we all want. We want to
• 44:51
Speaker 19: have that instant connection. And Commissioner Tennant and I talked
• 44:56
Speaker 19: about this during the boys basketball game, if you recall
• 44:59
Speaker 19: Natalie in the stands, and we were talking about friends
• 45:02
Speaker 19: and people who have influenced our lives who we have
• 45:05

• 47:51
Speaker 3: of Doug scaff and I appreciate everybody. If I start
• 47:55
Speaker 3: mentioning names and going to leave somebody out, I will
• 47:57
Speaker 3: say that I reached out last night to pretty much
• 48:00
Speaker 3: everybody I know in the political world, and for everybody
• 48:03
Speaker 3: that I knew we could talk to about Doug scaff
• 48:08
  Speaker 3: with and.
• 48:10
  Speaker 2: My phone.
• 48:11
Speaker 3: For an old man that goes to bed about nine
• 48:13
Speaker 3: thirty every night, I'm not Steve Annibal. I don't live
• 48:16
Speaker 3: the rock of old lifestyle at my age anymore.
• 48:18
  Speaker 7: Steve still does.
• 48:20
Speaker 3: But I was up till late last night, late by
• 48:24
Speaker 3: my standards is like eleven eleven thirty, and I was
• 48:28
Speaker 3: reaching out and taking text and so on and so forth,
• 48:31
Speaker 3: and a lot of people said, you know, I'd like
• 48:35
Speaker 3: to come on. I just can't, you know, right now,
• 48:38
Speaker 3: And Okay, I think we do have a phone call.
• 48:42
Speaker 3: So let's let's go to the phones. Go ahead, and
• 48:44
Speaker 3: you're on the air.
• 48:47
  Speaker 4: Yes.
• 48:48
Speaker 15: Hi, my name is Kelly Bimer. I'm a president and
• 48:52
Speaker 15: co founder West Virginia Kids Answer Crusaders. Yes, and Doug
• 48:58
Speaker 15: scaff along with his wife Marissa, were also co founders
• 49:02
Speaker 15: with me, and I just wanted to share with you,
• 49:06
Speaker 15: you know, some of the things that Doug would do
• 49:10
Speaker 15: with West Virginia Kids Cancer Crusaders. You know, Doug was
• 49:15
Speaker 15: the kind of guy who was he was very simple.
• 49:17
Speaker 15: He loved the children, the cancer kids. He would you know,
• 49:22
Speaker 15: set up inflatables first at the Christmas parties. He knew
• 49:25
Speaker 15: all the cancer kids other first names. They loved him
• 49:30
Speaker 15: and he loved them. And you know, Doug was just
• 49:35
Speaker 15: the kind of guy. He was just full of life.
• 49:38
Speaker 15: And his involvement with West Virginia Kids Cancer Crusaders is
• 49:43
Speaker 15: going to be really missed.
• 49:45
Speaker 3: All right, Kelly, I appreciate your phone call. Thanks a lot,
• 49:48
Speaker 3: Thanks for sharing that with us.
• 49:49
  Speaker 14: Uh.
• 49:50
Speaker 3: You know, it was interesting because, as I said, I
• 49:53
Speaker 3: think I said, I don't know what I said out loud,
• 49:55
Speaker 3: and wanted what's in my head. But as I listened
• 50:00
Speaker 3: the Morning News every morning when I'm getting ready for work,
• 50:02
Speaker 3: and this morning, just about the time I got out
• 50:04
Speaker 3: of the shower, Chris and Jeff were playing the audio
• 50:09
Speaker 3: of the interview that I did back on May twenty
• 50:11
Speaker 3: second with Doug scaff about the takeover of PHASEOS, and
• 50:16
Speaker 3: I talked about that. Of course, he'll you know, forever
• 50:18
Speaker 3: being o from Snake by an incident, so I talked
• 50:20
Speaker 3: to you about that as well. But then I guess
• 50:22
Speaker 3: the clip that really got to me was I think
• 50:27
Speaker 3: I just asked him like about the state of politics
• 50:29
Speaker 3: or something right now. And you'll probably hear this clip
• 50:32
Speaker 3: several times throughout the day here in that Doug scaff style,
• 50:37
Speaker 3: he said something to the effect of, look, the campaign
• 50:40
Speaker 3: is over, you know, I mean, Doug ran unsuccessfully for
• 50:43
Speaker 3: Secretary of State. He was going to run for more offices.
• 50:46
Speaker 7: We all know that, but he.
• 50:47
Speaker 3: Said the campaign is over, it's time to stop with
• 50:50
Speaker 3: the back and forth and it's time to get to
• 50:55
Speaker 3: work for the people to West Virginia. And that was
• 50:57
Speaker 3: like the most Doug scaff thing ever to me. And
• 51:05
Speaker 3: that's the scaff that I want to that I want
• 51:08
Speaker 3: to remember. He just wanted, he just wanted to do good.
• 51:11
  Speaker 7: Steve.
• 51:12
Speaker 8: Yeah, he was a great bridge builder. Okay, your side,
• 51:16
Speaker 8: this side, it doesn't matter what side you're on. Let's
• 51:18
Speaker 8: get together, figure it out, make it work, and be
• 51:21
Speaker 8: like Doug man, bring some happiness to the table, have
• 51:24
Speaker 8: a smile on your face and just go do it.
• 51:27
Speaker 8: But try to help some people. And he was awesome.
• 51:29
Speaker 8: He will definitely be missed.
• 51:31
Speaker 3: TJ Meadows is here with talk Line and TJ as
• 51:35
Speaker 3: opposed to doing our normal preview that we would do.
• 51:38
Speaker 3: I know you dropped a commentary today. We'll save that,
• 51:40
Speaker 3: you know for the show. Absolutely your thoughts on Doug Scaff.
• 51:45
Speaker 3: I met Doug twenty six years ago as a freshman
• 51:48
Speaker 3: at WVU when he was a senior at WVU and
• 51:51
Speaker 3: he was student body president. A couple of things that
• 51:53
Speaker 3: you knew right off the bat about Doug. Everybody knew Doug.
• 51:57
Speaker 3: Everybody loved Doug. People wanted to be around him, and
• 52:01
Speaker 3: even at that age, Steve, he had those abilities that
• 52:06
Speaker 3: you were talking about in terms of bringing people together.
• 52:08
Speaker 3: Founded the Mountaineer Maniacs, brought people together. Gone way too
• 52:13
Speaker 3: soon and his best years were ahead. It's a tragedy
• 52:15
Speaker 3: and I just feel for his wife, his boys, a
• 52:19
Speaker 3: lot of people dealing with a lot of pain this morning.
• 52:23
Speaker 3: But I think the takeaway is is that Doug scaff
• 52:28
Speaker 3: was a man of the people and people loved Doug Scaff.
• 52:32
Speaker 3: Sometimes they didn't always agree with him, but at the
• 52:35
Speaker 3: end of the day, he had that smile and that
• 52:36
Speaker 3: wavy hair and he would just kind of look at you.
• 52:38
Speaker 3: He just kind of look at you and go see
• 52:40
Speaker 3: you man. It was maybe one of the best heads
• 52:43
Speaker 3: of hair I've ever seen in my life. Actually, all right,
• 52:45
Speaker 3: we'll leave it there, We'll be back. I'll be back
• 52:47
Speaker 3: with Metro News midday at noon. Until then, have fun
• 52:50
Speaker 3: and love somebody. RP Doug.
