Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / The DiCecco Daily Postgame Show: Takeaways From Eagles Inconsistent Showing In Win vs. Bucs
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: What's happened? Everybody.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome into this edition of the Checko Daily. It's Andrew
- 0:14Speaker 2: Dicheco and I am here in my hotel. Finally, after
- 0:19Speaker 2: a long day in Tampa at Raymond James Stadium, the
- 0:22Speaker 2: Eagles win, improving the four and zero by a score
- 0:26Speaker 2: of thirty one to twenty five in a place that
- 0:29Speaker 2: had been largely a house of horrors for this team
- 0:32Speaker 2: under Nick Sirianni.
- 0:34Speaker 1: And it was kind of an odd game. There was
- 0:36Speaker 1: a lot that happened in it.
- 0:37Speaker 2: And I always reserve strong judgment after, you know, until
- 0:43Speaker 2: I give the game another watch or two. But I
- 0:46Speaker 2: will give you some of my immediate takeaways and reactions
- 0:49Speaker 2: and we'll kind of go from there.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Now. The offense, I thought the offense started out strong.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Believe Jayalen Hurts was fifteen of sixteen at the break.
- 0:59Speaker 2: There was some creativity with those shovel pass of sorts
- 1:04Speaker 2: to Dallas Goddard on those two touchdowns. They took advantage
- 1:07Speaker 2: of in a very aggressive Tampa front, and they kind
- 1:11Speaker 2: of left them vulnerable on the side where Jaywen was
- 1:14Speaker 2: able to make a really good decision get the ball
- 1:16Speaker 2: to Goddard and god Or is able to fight his
- 1:18Speaker 2: way into the end zone. There still wasn't a ton
- 1:22Speaker 2: of running room for Saquon Barkley. The Eagles running back
- 1:25Speaker 2: finished with just forty three yards on nineteen carries. But
- 1:28Speaker 2: I thought early in this game, you can see the
- 1:31Speaker 2: aggressiveness that you heard talked about at nauseum this week,
- 1:34Speaker 2: and there was a conservative, concerted effort to be more
- 1:39Speaker 2: aggressive in this game. And you saw that all three
- 1:42Speaker 2: phases of the game were firing and all cylinders complimenting
- 1:46Speaker 2: one another early and at the break, the Eagles had
- 1:50Speaker 2: the Buccaneers at twenty four to six. Now, Chase McLaughlin
- 1:54Speaker 2: drilled a sixty five yarder as time expired going into halftime,
- 1:58Speaker 2: and I think you can argue that that maybe injected
- 2:00Speaker 2: a little bit of life into that Tampa Bay team,
- 2:02Speaker 2: But they were largely on the ropes. They were having
- 2:05Speaker 2: trouble countering the Eagles haymakers that they were throwing.
- 2:09Speaker 1: But think of it like this.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Minutes into the game, the Eagles special teams unit spotted
- 2:17Speaker 2: the offense seven points and they scored a touchdown for
- 2:21Speaker 2: the second time in as many weeks, and Titan Cameron
- 2:24Speaker 2: Lattu completely fights through the line rejects Riley Dixon's punt
- 2:31Speaker 2: and it deflects right into the arms of Sidney Brown,
- 2:34Speaker 2: the Eagle safety, who then scoots thirty six yards into
- 2:37Speaker 2: the end zone for a touchdown. The crowd, the Tampa
- 2:40Speaker 2: Bay Buccaneers fans that were in attendance were stunned. It
- 2:44Speaker 2: was silent, and the Eagles really started to feed off
- 2:46Speaker 2: that right there, but really quickly. Cam Lattu has been
- 2:50Speaker 2: a under the radar strong addition for this team. He
- 2:53Speaker 2: was signed to the fifty three on Wednesday. Big body
- 2:57Speaker 2: tight end. He battled injuries early in his career, but
- 2:59Speaker 2: he was drafted the third round by the forty nine ers.
- 3:02Speaker 2: He's now found a home here in Philadelphia. But an
- 3:05Speaker 2: extremely physical player. Every time I talk to lot too,
- 3:08Speaker 2: and I talked to him after the game on Sunday,
- 3:11Speaker 2: he mentioned, I'm just going out there and trying to
- 3:13Speaker 2: be physical. He has the body frame, he has the
- 3:17Speaker 2: mentality for it, and he does have the athleticism. And
- 3:20Speaker 2: he's done a nice job filling that Ben Van sumer
- 3:23Speaker 2: En role on special teams and as a fullback on offense.
- 3:27Speaker 2: I'm starting to wonder if when the Eagles do go
- 3:29Speaker 2: to twelve personnel if you don't see more Cam Latu,
- 3:32Speaker 2: because it would make a lot of sense.
- 3:33Speaker 1: He does one.
- 3:34Speaker 2: He can catch the football, so it's not putting the
- 3:37Speaker 2: offense at a disadvantage, but it aids it because he's
- 3:41Speaker 2: such a good blocker and extremely physical at the point
- 3:44Speaker 2: of attack that I think that there is room for
- 3:47Speaker 2: a larger role.
- 3:47Speaker 1: But he continues to get.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Better and he's been a really solid addition for Michael
- 3:53Speaker 2: Clay and that special teams unit. I do think that
- 3:57Speaker 2: there's something special with that un that third phase unit,
- 4:01Speaker 2: because now you've seen the Jordan Davis block and touchdown
- 4:06Speaker 2: last week. You saw the Eagles get off to a
- 4:08Speaker 2: fast start there. This week, I thought they looked good
- 4:10Speaker 2: in the kick return game, namely with Will Shipley, so
- 4:14Speaker 2: they spot the offense seven points. Then you get the
- 4:17Speaker 2: two touchdown passes to Dallas Goddter from Jaywen Hurts. The
- 4:21Speaker 2: defense was all over the field, particularly Zach Bond. Zach
- 4:26Speaker 2: Bond was active around the line of scrimmage. He showed
- 4:29Speaker 2: a lot of range in space. I thought, Quinjon Mitchell,
- 4:32Speaker 2: you can make an argument that that was one of
- 4:33Speaker 2: his better games as an Eagle. Through a year and
- 4:36Speaker 2: some change and that's saying a lot because Quenyon Mitchell
- 4:39Speaker 2: has been pretty much an eraser on one side of
- 4:43Speaker 2: the field. But he made a couple of back to
- 4:45Speaker 2: back plays early denying mecha Igbuka, the explosive, dynamic rookie
- 4:50Speaker 2: of the Buccaneers. Completions he forced incompletions there. He made
- 4:54Speaker 2: a really nice tackle after a two yard game to
- 4:56Speaker 2: Bucky Irving, who had a nice game, tough runner him
- 5:00Speaker 2: in the open field, and I just thought he brought
- 5:02Speaker 2: a lot of juice and you see the leadership and
- 5:05Speaker 2: his growing role in that area where it looked like
- 5:08Speaker 2: Cooper Degen had an interception earlier in that game and
- 5:10Speaker 2: he returns it.
- 5:11Speaker 1: And he took exception to.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Unnecessarily rough tackle from Tristan Wurf's who tried to accent
- 5:20Speaker 2: the play by throwing his weight around, and Quinya Mitchell
- 5:24Speaker 2: took exception to someone doing that to a good friend
- 5:28Speaker 2: and his position mate. And I thought that both he
- 5:30Speaker 2: and jay loox Hunt did a nice job there setting
- 5:33Speaker 2: the tone and letting them know that that wasn't going
- 5:35Speaker 2: to be allowed and they weren't going to.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Push their teammate around. Cooper Dejen had a really good game.
- 5:40Speaker 2: He might be one of the best tackling defensive backs
- 5:43Speaker 2: in the NFL, and that's not hyperbole. He's so effective
- 5:47Speaker 2: in space bringing down ball carriers and he's a physical
- 5:50Speaker 2: player read blanket ship same thing. Really solid open field tackle,
- 5:56Speaker 2: secure tackling. Had a deflection that we'll talk about later
- 5:59Speaker 2: that contributed to an Eagles turnover. On the defensive side.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Jalen Carter strong game in the middle. I think Zach
- 6:08Speaker 2: Bond and Jahad Campbell were the real shining stars of
- 6:10Speaker 2: this game. Jehad Campbell forcing a fumble, coming up with
- 6:14Speaker 2: an interception late in that game that was off that
- 6:16Speaker 2: reblanke and shift deflection. Showed a pretty impressive mental resolve
- 6:22Speaker 2: to be able to bounce back from the play in
- 6:25Speaker 2: which he gave up a touchdown late in the game
- 6:28Speaker 2: to Bucky Irving. It was a seventy two yard completion.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Was he matched and carried him to the left sideline.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Irving caught the passing stride Baker Mayfield put it right
- 6:39Speaker 2: on him and he cruised for seventy two yards, pulled
- 6:42Speaker 2: away from Campbell, and I thought the Buccaneers showed some
- 6:46Speaker 2: good fight coming off that sixty five yard Chase mclachwin
- 6:49Speaker 2: field goal. They came out in the second half and
- 6:52Speaker 2: they scored seventeen points. Baker Mayfield in that unit was
- 6:55Speaker 2: playing with a lot of confidence. There was the seventy
- 6:57Speaker 2: seven yard touchdown to a Mecca Agbuca in the maybe
- 7:01Speaker 2: it was the third quarter. Looked like it looked like
- 7:04Speaker 2: he didn't have enough on the throw, and I thought
- 7:06Speaker 2: Reed Blancaship was going to step in front of it
- 7:08Speaker 2: and snipe it for the interception. But he fits it
- 7:10Speaker 2: right in between Blankenship, mccooba's coming over and Igbuka is
- 7:15Speaker 2: able to take that seventy seven.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Yards for the touchdown.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Not a great offensive showing in the second half for
- 7:21Speaker 2: the Eagles. Jalen Hurts half excuse me. After the game,
- 7:26Speaker 2: talked a lot about execution and that's really what it
- 7:29Speaker 2: comes down to and what worked in the first half.
- 7:32Speaker 2: He cited it to execution, But I think when you
- 7:37Speaker 2: look at it, Jalen Hurts didn't complete a pass in
- 7:39Speaker 2: the second half, and they looked like they were trying
- 7:42Speaker 2: to really fource feed Aj Brown the football. They weren't
- 7:45Speaker 2: able to connect with Aj and Jalen weren't able to
- 7:48Speaker 2: connect on that and in the second half, that's where
- 7:51Speaker 2: you really saw, in my opinion, the completeness, if you will,
- 7:57Speaker 2: of this Eagles team. Because the offense set the table
- 7:59Speaker 2: in the first half, they went cold in the second half,
- 8:02Speaker 2: and that's where the defense really responded.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Well.
- 8:05Speaker 2: That's where you saw Jahad Campbell force two turnovers, Zach
- 8:09Speaker 2: Bahn all over the field. The secondary, they did a
- 8:12Speaker 2: nice job. The defensive line was super active. On a
- 8:16Speaker 2: second and twelve late in that game, Moro Jomo comes
- 8:18Speaker 2: up with the timely sack and sucks all the life
- 8:21Speaker 2: and the air out of Raymond James Stadium. So it
- 8:25Speaker 2: took a team effort, a collective effort. It wasn't perfect,
- 8:29Speaker 2: but there was a lot of positives to take away
- 8:31Speaker 2: from this game.

- 12:01Speaker 3: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans. Twenty
- 12:04Speaker 3: one and up.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Cards on nineteen carries. There wasn't a lot of room
- 12:08Speaker 2: for him to run. I also look at the offensive line, right,
- 12:12Speaker 2: So you talk about Saquon Barkley not getting off to
- 12:16Speaker 2: not having much of an impact in this game, you
- 12:19Speaker 2: can also look at the offense as a whole lane.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Johnson left the game with a shoulder injury. Tyler Steen
- 12:26Speaker 2: before the half, hyper extended his knee, put a brace
- 12:31Speaker 2: on battle through it. Whether it was adrenaline or what
- 12:33Speaker 2: have you. He was out there, but probably not one
- 12:35Speaker 2: hundred percent. You didn't have Lane Johnson. Fred Johnson came
- 12:38Speaker 2: in there. Landon Dickerson's been battling through things, at least
- 12:43Speaker 2: he was in the beginning of the season. And you know,
- 12:47Speaker 2: I think all of that needs to be taken into consideration.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Context is so important.
- 12:51Speaker 2: It's never one facet one player, one reason why one
- 12:56Speaker 2: of the phases aren't really firing, why they're not revved up,
- 13:00Speaker 2: or why they're not.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Being able to execute.
- 13:02Speaker 2: There's a lot of different variables that should be taken
- 13:05Speaker 2: into consideration. And again, I'm going to go back and
- 13:08Speaker 2: watch this game two or three times to get a
- 13:10Speaker 2: better assessment. I don't ever, it would be disingenuous of
- 13:13Speaker 2: me to give you a really strong opinion based off
- 13:16Speaker 2: of the initial watch from the press box, but I
- 13:19Speaker 2: can tell you that, you know, based off of you know,
- 13:22Speaker 2: the first watch, I thought that the Eagles did a
- 13:25Speaker 2: good job of playing team football.
- 13:27Speaker 1: For some of the game.
- 13:28Speaker 2: They were playing complimentary football all three phases, and you
- 13:32Speaker 2: have to battle the heat. You have to battle a
- 13:34Speaker 2: ferocious Tampa Bay team that was really attacking a lot
- 13:38Speaker 2: of scrimmage as you might expect.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Videvea in the middle.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Of that defensive line for the Bucks had a strong game.
- 13:43Speaker 2: And look, I mean Tampa Bay is they played the
- 13:47Speaker 2: Eagles tough and they fought to the end.
- 13:51Speaker 1: That's what you can expect. They don't go quietly.
- 13:53Speaker 2: But the Eagles have to find a way to put
- 13:55Speaker 2: that team away. You had them down twenty four to six.
- 13:58Speaker 2: It shouldn't really come down to h You know, at
- 14:01Speaker 2: the end of the game, it's thirty one to twenty
- 14:03Speaker 2: three and Campbell gets the interception and then you know
- 14:07Speaker 2: the Eagles offense isn't able to do anything. And then
- 14:09Speaker 2: later in the game they have a chance just under
- 14:11Speaker 2: the two minute warning. It takes Moro Jomo coming through
- 14:14Speaker 2: on a second and twelve to sack Baker Mayfield and really,
- 14:19Speaker 2: as I mentioned, sucked the life out of their their
- 14:21Speaker 2: comeback attempt. And then at the very end, Perry Nickerson
- 14:25Speaker 2: makes a nice play.
- 14:27Speaker 1: So yeah, I.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Mean, you got contributions from everyone, and I should also
- 14:30Speaker 2: mention that Kiley Ringo at least on my initial watch,
- 14:34Speaker 2: had a nice showing.
- 14:37Speaker 1: I mean they didn't.
- 14:37Speaker 2: He wasn't targeted heavily, but he was physical. He came,
- 14:42Speaker 2: he recovered the fumble that Jehad Campbell forced. Jahad Campbell
- 14:45Speaker 2: and I believe it was Jay Looks Hunt teamed on
- 14:47Speaker 2: that Bucky Irving force fumble. He was Johnny on the
- 14:50Speaker 2: spot recovered that and he did have a DPI penalty
- 14:55Speaker 2: in the second half. But for someone who was starting
- 15:00Speaker 2: and under a microscope, you had to figure that Baker
- 15:02Speaker 2: Mayfield and the Bucks were going to try and exploit that.
- 15:05Speaker 2: I thought that Keey Ringo held up pretty well.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Again.
- 15:09Speaker 2: I'm going to go back and watch and isolate his
- 15:11Speaker 2: some of his reps against, you know, in coverage, to
- 15:14Speaker 2: get a better assessment. But he wasn't a liability out there,
- 15:18Speaker 2: and I think that's really all you can ask for.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Before the game, Dori Jackson was warming up. He pretty
- 15:25Speaker 2: much said that he was doing some like jogging, and
- 15:27Speaker 2: he pretty much said Friday when we spoke to him
- 15:29Speaker 2: that it was going to be a day of the
- 15:31Speaker 2: game situation. He didn't go in that game. They also
- 15:34Speaker 2: suffered another injury obo Ocuronquo who was active for the
- 15:38Speaker 2: first time this season to add some more depth off
- 15:41Speaker 2: the edge. He suffered a triceps injury and was immediately
- 15:45Speaker 2: ruled out.
- 15:46Speaker 1: That's not good.
- 15:47Speaker 2: I did see him after the game walking through the
- 15:50Speaker 2: locker room. I don't he didn't do any interviews or
- 15:52Speaker 2: anything like that, and I didn't see anything that You can.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Make a determination one way or the other.
- 15:57Speaker 2: But whenever someone's ruled out immediately, certainly with a trisap injury,
- 16:01Speaker 2: that's never a good thing.
- 16:02Speaker 1: But more information, of course.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Will follow throughout the week when we get more information,
- 16:08Speaker 2: So that was my assessment there.
- 16:12Speaker 1: And then in the absence of Nolan Smith, it.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Was Zadarius Smith who started opposite jaywoks Hunt in this game.
- 16:17Speaker 2: So you had Zadarius Smith starting and you had keethy
- 16:20Speaker 2: Ringo starting. So sometimes when you have two new pieces
- 16:23Speaker 2: like that, the defense as you're trying to acclimate, can
- 16:26Speaker 2: be a little bit disjointed. But I didn't think that
- 16:29Speaker 2: that was the case in this one. It was a
- 16:31Speaker 2: tough win. It was a gritty win, as Jay when
- 16:33Speaker 2: hurt said, and they found a way to get it done.
- 16:36Speaker 2: But they're going to have to refine some things if
- 16:38Speaker 2: they want to be this dominant force that this roster
- 16:42Speaker 2: indicates that they should be, because again coming up empty offensively,
- 16:47Speaker 2: and I believe there was five three and outs in
- 16:50Speaker 2: the second half, Jay, when Hurst didn't complete a pass
- 16:53Speaker 2: in the second half. That's not going to win you
- 16:56Speaker 2: most games. But it took a collective effort, and that's
- 16:59Speaker 2: why I wanted to highlight that they got performances from
- 17:02Speaker 2: some unlikely contributors in some cases, and other players really
- 17:08Speaker 2: rising to the occasion and fueling this win. And the
- 17:12Speaker 2: offense set the table, and the defense and the special
- 17:15Speaker 2: teams carry their weight as well. So plenty more to
- 17:18Speaker 2: come from this, and I have some stories on Inside
- 17:22Speaker 2: the Birds dot com. I have some quotes on my
- 17:24Speaker 2: ex platform from some of the players that we spoke to,
- 17:28Speaker 2: and there'll be a plenty more coverage off of this
- 17:30Speaker 2: game this week. We'll hear from the coordinators on Tuesday
- 17:33Speaker 2: at eleven thirty, where you'll hear from Kevin Patulo, Vic
- 17:37Speaker 2: Fangio and Michael Clay and we'll start to get ready
