- 0:03Speaker 1: Hi again everybody. I'm Dan Horde and thanks for downloading
- 0:06Speaker 1: the Bengals Booth Podcast. The don't be shot by the
- 0:11Speaker 1: tone of my voice. Check out my new weapon weapon
- 0:16Speaker 1: of Choice. Addition, as the Bengals add one of the
- 0:20Speaker 1: top weapons in this year's draft to the offense with
- 0:23Speaker 1: a selection of LSU wide receiver Jamar Chase. Coming up,
- 0:27Speaker 1: I'll discuss Chase with one of my favorite writers covering
- 0:30Speaker 1: the NFL, Key and Fahey. He's an irishman who's hosted
- 0:34Speaker 1: a podcast for ESPN in the past and is currently
- 0:37Speaker 1: producing content for subscribers at Patrion dot com for as
- 0:41Speaker 1: little as two dollars a month. Trust me, you will
- 0:44Speaker 1: want to hear what he has to say about Jamar Chase.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Then I'll be joined by my broadcast partner Dave Lapham
- 0:51Speaker 1: to discuss why the Bengals opted for Chase over Pinney
- 0:55Speaker 1: Sewell and who they are likely targeting tomorrow in rounds
- 0:58Speaker 1: two and three. The Bengals Booth Podcast is presented by
- 1:02Speaker 1: bud Light. Seltzer refreshed the game and here's a quick
- 1:05Speaker 1: reminder that you can have the latest edition of this
- 1:08Speaker 1: podcast delivered right to your phone, tablet, or computer by
- 1:11Speaker 1: subscribing on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, Spotify, or pod Bean.
- 1:16Speaker 1: It's the greatest thing since The Beast. I used to
- 1:22Speaker 1: be a bookstore's best friend leading up to the draft,
- 1:25Speaker 1: as I would buy several draft guides to help prep
- 1:27Speaker 1: for the draft and then to learn more about the
- 1:30Speaker 1: Bengals late round picks that I didn't know that much about.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Dane Brugler, the draft expert for The Athletic, has cut
- 1:37Speaker 1: down on my spending thanks to his annual draft guide,
- 1:41Speaker 1: known as The Beast. This year, it contains four hundred
- 1:45Speaker 1: and fifteen scouting reports and nearly two hundred and sixty
- 1:48Speaker 1: two thousand words. It's so comprehensive that I now know
- 1:53Speaker 1: that quarterback Zach Wilson, selected number two overall by the Jets,
- 1:57Speaker 1: is the nephew of the dude that founded Jet Blue Airways.
- 2:02Speaker 1: The Beast definitely lives up to the nickname and is
- 2:06Speaker 1: one of many reasons why I subscribe to The Athletic.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I also subscribe to the football content produced by Keyan
- 2:13Speaker 1: Fahey on patrion dot com. He's worked for Football Outsiders
- 2:18Speaker 1: an ESPN in the past and has some very interesting
- 2:22Speaker 1: things to say about the Bengal selection of Jamar Chase.
- 2:27Speaker 1: He and tonight the Bengal selected Jamar Chase fifth overall.
- 2:30Speaker 1: You wrote about him and did some video analysis last month.
- 2:34Speaker 1: The headline of your story was, Jamar Chase is a
- 2:36Speaker 1: true superstar prospect. I've seen enough of your work to
- 2:40Speaker 1: know you don't throw that term around lightly. Why are
- 2:43Speaker 1: you so high on Jamar Chase. I don't show that
- 2:48Speaker 1: around lightly. And the funny part of it is, and
- 2:50Speaker 1: this is very relevant for Bengals fans watching Joe Burrow
- 2:52Speaker 1: last year. And maybe you won't quite like me saying this,
- 2:55Speaker 1: but you won't care now. But when I was watching
- 2:57Speaker 1: Joe Burrow, the best player on the field every single game,
- 2:59Speaker 1: we watched Jamar Chase. Like the quality of him as
- 3:02Speaker 1: a wide receiver. I wanted them to let him. Obviously,
- 3:05Speaker 1: you don't want guys who were too young to be
- 3:06Speaker 1: playing in the NFL who just get beaten up. But
- 3:08Speaker 1: I wanted him to be able to come out after
- 3:10Speaker 1: last year because there was nothing left for him to
- 3:12Speaker 1: do in college. He's a bigger receiver actually because he's
- 3:15Speaker 1: going going to the Bengals. It's kind of perfect because
- 3:17Speaker 1: you guys have got te Higgins there, and you just
- 3:19Speaker 1: watched what Tee Higgins did in his rookie year, where
- 3:22Speaker 1: you have that size, you have that athleticism, and you
- 3:24Speaker 1: have those balls skills. The interesting aspect of it is
- 3:26Speaker 1: Tee Higgins really surprised me as a rookie because when
- 3:29Speaker 1: he was coming out of college, his routes were quite poor.
- 3:31Speaker 1: He get pushed around a little bit, and I didn't
- 3:33Speaker 1: think he adjusted all that well in the air to
- 3:35Speaker 1: the ball. Now, if you compare him to Jamar Chase,
- 3:37Speaker 1: you'll see the size, you'll see the athleticism. Mey be like, yeah,
- 3:40Speaker 1: they're similar. But then you'll realize if if you go
- 3:42Speaker 1: back and look more closely at Chase's college tape, he's
- 3:45Speaker 1: doing things that Higgins didn't do in college. So he's
- 3:48Speaker 1: doing the adjustments like a lot of Barow or a
- 3:50Speaker 1: lot of the passes the Porow would have given him,
- 3:52Speaker 1: because paroles obviously not. He's a was a very good
- 3:54Speaker 1: rookie and very impressive rookie, but he's not a huge
- 3:57Speaker 1: armed quarterback. He's not throwing Matchew Stafford type of passes.
- 4:00Speaker 1: So oftentimes Chase would have opportunities to make adjustments in
- 4:03Speaker 1: the air which is why he's a perfect fit Witborow.
- 4:06Speaker 1: And you saw him do that so consistently in college,
- 4:08Speaker 1: where he would see where the ball was going before
- 4:10Speaker 1: the defensive back, which means he was moving to his
- 4:12Speaker 1: position before the defensive back could even figure out what
- 4:14Speaker 1: was happening, which meant he was getting in the right spot.
- 4:17Speaker 1: So like a great rebounder in basketball, he's already got
- 4:19Speaker 1: this position. But then he's got the size and the athleticism,
- 4:22Speaker 1: so once he gets that position, you're not involved at all.
- 4:25Speaker 1: He turns these contested catches into one opportunity to catch
- 4:28Speaker 1: the ball, and it's only chases. And normally, when you
- 4:30Speaker 1: get a guy who's that good, who's that scared, he's
- 4:32Speaker 1: that talented at the catchpoint, like a Mike Evans or
- 4:35Speaker 1: something like that, they're not that great overall as actual receivers.
- 4:38Speaker 1: They rely on that aspect of their game. But that's
- 4:41Speaker 1: not the case with him, and he runs upstanding routes.
- 4:43Speaker 1: He's very good getting off the line of scrimmage. He's
- 4:45Speaker 1: very nimble, and while he wants in his movement, he
- 4:47Speaker 1: can run after the catch. Obviously, he's a complete superstar
- 4:50Speaker 1: receiver to me, and he's one of those guys where
- 4:53Speaker 1: if you can normally wide receivers like over recent years,
- 4:56Speaker 1: we haven't really wanted them to go on the top five.
- 4:58Speaker 1: But there's no argument taking where he take him because
- 5:00Speaker 1: of just how good he is. We're dragging the NFL
- 5:02Speaker 1: analyst key and Fahey, I assume the fact that Joe
- 5:05Speaker 1: Burrow through to him for two years has to be
- 5:07Speaker 1: a plus. How big of a plus in your opinion?
- 5:11Speaker 1: I'm not sure how much that really matters, just because
- 5:12Speaker 1: the level of competition is so different, and now with
- 5:14Speaker 1: Borrows knee injury, obviously it was going to be some
- 5:16Speaker 1: question marks about how his timing and everything gets down
- 5:18Speaker 1: in the offseason and how he's going to feel playing
- 5:20Speaker 1: on that kneed. But you can still be really optimistic
- 5:22Speaker 1: about it. I think actually what I'm more interested in
- 5:25Speaker 1: is how it will impact the defense when you've got
- 5:28Speaker 1: Higgins on one side, Chase on the other, and then
- 5:30Speaker 1: you've got like Tyler Boyd working in the middle. You
- 5:32Speaker 1: know what I mean, Like, come on, like what you have?
- 5:34Speaker 1: How many more weapons you need? Because obviously we wanted
- 5:36Speaker 1: that to be with aj Green last year, but Green
- 5:38Speaker 1: was at the end of his career and injuries is
- 5:40Speaker 1: called up to him a little bit, and that limited
- 5:41Speaker 1: him a little bit. But Chase's ability to win the
- 5:44Speaker 1: ball one on one and Higgins's ability to win the
- 5:47Speaker 1: ball one on one on both sides of the field,
- 5:49Speaker 1: and then you factor in that neither of those guys
- 5:52Speaker 1: can be matched up to with just a big cornerback.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Like back in the day, you could have had a
- 5:56Speaker 1: big cornerback. Again, you go against a big receiver, you
- 5:58Speaker 1: can challenge him at the catchpoint. That's all. That's all
- 6:00Speaker 1: you got to do. That you don't have to worry
- 6:02Speaker 1: about it anymore. If you just put a bigger corner
- 6:04Speaker 1: on Chase, he'll still run away from that guy. He'll
- 6:07Speaker 1: still make it, make a catch underneath and turn into
- 6:08Speaker 1: a fifty yard play. And Higgins on the other side
- 6:10Speaker 1: will do the same thing. So if you've got Borrow there,
- 6:12Speaker 1: who's so intelligent with where he shows the ball, like
- 6:15Speaker 1: obviously he had his struggles as a rookie. Every quarterback does,
- 6:18Speaker 1: and the charting that I do and the analysis that
- 6:20Speaker 1: I do, rookie quarterbacks have never come out looking great
- 6:22Speaker 1: because the rookie quarterbacks. But you could see the potential
- 6:25Speaker 1: there in what Borrow was doing. His intermediate and his
- 6:28Speaker 1: short accuracy is really good. His intelligence is really good
- 6:30Speaker 1: to understand not only where to go with the ball,
- 6:33Speaker 1: but how to place the ball against the specific coverage
- 6:35Speaker 1: to set his receiver up. So when you've got a
- 6:37Speaker 1: guy like Chase who works brilliantly in the blind spot
- 6:40Speaker 1: of the defender, who works cliantly catching the ball and
- 6:42Speaker 1: going after the catch, and the ball is being thrown
- 6:44Speaker 1: to the exact spot he needs it to go to,
- 6:46Speaker 1: that's that's guaranteed production. It's like, unless you have some
- 6:49Speaker 1: amazing turnaround where he suddenly drops the ball all the time,
- 6:52Speaker 1: that's the only thing that's going to stop him. And
- 6:54Speaker 1: that's something that could happen to any receiver. So if
- 6:56Speaker 1: that's your only concern, you've got no concerns. I always
- 6:58Speaker 1: find that like prospects, prospects like this, they're the most
- 7:02Speaker 1: boring prospects because every they're good at everything. You know,
- 7:05Speaker 1: Like if we start talking about Patrick Mahomes and we're like,
- 7:07Speaker 1: lot's Patrick Mahomes good out and we can say all
- 7:09Speaker 1: these things, then we can say, whatt's Patrickhomes bad at?
- 7:11Speaker 1: And we'll go, um, he's kind of even consistent sometimes
- 7:14Speaker 1: and that's kind of it. That's kind of what it's
- 7:15Speaker 1: like with Chase, where you're just you're sitting there and
- 7:17Speaker 1: you're a superative actor, superlative, are superlative and it sounds
- 7:20Speaker 1: like you're just a big fan and reality is he's
- 7:22Speaker 1: just that good. You know, that's the kind of boring
- 7:25Speaker 1: we like. Here in Cincinnati, we're talking to analyst Key
- 7:27Speaker 1: and Fayhe you can subscribe to see all of his
- 7:30Speaker 1: content for just a few bucks a month like I
- 7:32Speaker 1: do at patreon dot com. You showed several clips that
- 7:36Speaker 1: showed Jamar Chase subtly pushing off to get separation. Is
- 7:42Speaker 1: that good or is he going to get penalized for
- 7:44Speaker 1: that in the NFL? So that is a scale. Okay,
- 7:47Speaker 1: this is like, oh, I haven't Odell Beckham to Mike
- 7:48Speaker 1: Evans scale and I'm surprised we haven't had a rule
- 7:51Speaker 1: change with Mike Evans and he's gotten better out of it.
- 7:53Speaker 1: But when Mike Evans is coming out of college, he
- 7:55Speaker 1: was just running around pushing guys like it was like
- 7:58Speaker 1: it wasn't football what he was doing. He would extend
- 8:00Speaker 1: his arm fully and just push away from defenders and
- 8:02Speaker 1: get called for all the time. That's what actually happened
- 8:04Speaker 1: that much room in the NFL. Maybe its because the
- 8:05Speaker 1: rules have changed and or maybe he's just gotten better,
- 8:08Speaker 1: but so when you're pushing him off, smart pushing pushing
- 8:10Speaker 1: off is pushing off in such a way that the
- 8:12Speaker 1: officials can't see it. And Odell when he was at
- 8:15Speaker 1: LSU in college, he had he had actually one player
- 8:17Speaker 1: that always sticks with me where he ran a post
- 8:19Speaker 1: route and then it was Mettenberger through the ball behind him.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Not no surprise there, but Mettenberger threw the ball behind
- 8:24Speaker 1: him and he had to work back through the defender
- 8:26Speaker 1: and he actually used his elbow to move the defender
- 8:29Speaker 1: and move the defender while his hand was going the
- 8:31Speaker 1: other way to catch the ball and reach back for
- 8:32Speaker 1: the ball fall to the ground. And it's this very
- 8:35Speaker 1: subtle thing that you'll see the defender like falling down
- 8:38Speaker 1: on the broadcast angle and you kind of wonder, how
- 8:40Speaker 1: did that happened, And then they'll show you'd replay and
- 8:42Speaker 1: you'll just see that little elbow going in on his side,
- 8:45Speaker 1: moving him out of the way and get giving a
- 8:47Speaker 1: clear path for the ball. And that's the type of
- 8:49Speaker 1: thing the chase can do. And the Beckham to Evan's
- 8:51Speaker 1: scale is on Evan's side you've got receivers who just
- 8:54Speaker 1: don't know understand the subtlety of it. They're just pushing
- 8:56Speaker 1: everyone like you're at Chicago Bears re seiver last ye
- 8:58Speaker 1: who just popped someone out of the middle of no where.
- 9:00Speaker 1: He'd be like on that side of the scale where
- 9:02Speaker 1: he can't tell you anything that he's doing. And on
- 9:03Speaker 1: the Beckham side you've got guys like actually, Aja Green
- 9:06Speaker 1: was great this as well. All Actually one of the things,
- 9:08Speaker 1: all of the elite receivers are great at this because
- 9:11Speaker 1: it's the only way you can beat great carbacks. So
- 9:13Speaker 1: great carbacks will stick with you and stay tight to
- 9:16Speaker 1: your body, true your road, and then the separation only
- 9:18Speaker 1: comes at the last second. And how you get that
- 9:20Speaker 1: separation is with your hands or which your elbows rotten
- 9:23Speaker 1: in your hands in tight So what that means is
- 9:25Speaker 1: when your body is on their body, it's the hand
- 9:27Speaker 1: that's hidden from the officials. So your outside hand you
- 9:30Speaker 1: don't want to use. You want to use the hand
- 9:31Speaker 1: that's snapped in tight together between your two bodies and
- 9:34Speaker 1: just shift them over the way. It's like that ship
- 9:36Speaker 1: like a cotton the SIUs Canal. You couldn't grab it
- 9:38Speaker 1: and turn it their own. You have to leverage it
- 9:39Speaker 1: out there. So he's great Like that they should have
- 9:41Speaker 1: called him, he would have done the job. Yeah, that
- 9:44Speaker 1: that ship wasn't real subtle in the the canal. Does
- 9:49Speaker 1: Jamar Chase remind you of anybody? I've heard people say
- 9:53Speaker 1: an Quan Balden, but running a four three eight instead
- 9:56Speaker 1: of a four to six, does anybody come to mind
- 9:59Speaker 1: for you? I always like those comparisons where this guy
- 10:03Speaker 1: but a massive difference between this. Yeah, I think Odell
- 10:10Speaker 1: is kind of where I've kind of leaned. I think
- 10:13Speaker 1: the scary named like kind of want to say that
- 10:15Speaker 1: I don't want to say is Calvin. The only reason
- 10:17Speaker 1: I don't want to say that is Calvin Johnson reached
- 10:20Speaker 1: the level that no one should ever be expected to reach.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Like he's the only guy I think you can talk
- 10:24Speaker 1: about with Jerry Rice and Randy Moss on that kind
- 10:26Speaker 1: of a level. But in terms of talent, in terms
- 10:28Speaker 1: of skill set, he does literally everything, Like you can't
- 10:31Speaker 1: turn around and say we asked him to do this,
- 10:33Speaker 1: He has to do that, or he has to play
- 10:35Speaker 1: in one certain area. He can only be one type
- 10:37Speaker 1: of coverage that's just not the reality of what it is.
- 10:39Speaker 1: And that's generally how you would compare a receiver to
- 10:41Speaker 1: another receiver, like if you were I'm just trying to
- 10:44Speaker 1: think of a normal comparison there when aj Green and
- 10:47Speaker 1: Julio Jones came out, and Julio Jones was the superior athlete,
- 10:50Speaker 1: but Adria Green was a phenomenal athlete as well, and
- 10:53Speaker 1: he was so incredibly fluid and is that you guys
- 10:56Speaker 1: got to see that for ten years. The unbelievable adjustments
- 10:59Speaker 1: he made makes it the catchpoint, the unbelievable plays and
- 11:02Speaker 1: routes he ran despite his size. I think Chase has
- 11:05Speaker 1: some elements of that to him, where he's that kind
- 11:07Speaker 1: of fluid, but he's also the level of Julio Jones,
- 11:11Speaker 1: where the athleticism is there and the eleticism of him
- 11:14Speaker 1: winning in different ways is there. So I think is
- 11:17Speaker 1: there a perfect style comparison? Probably not. Is there a
- 11:20Speaker 1: level of comparison you can hear in the receivers I've
- 11:22Speaker 1: talked about there, said Odell. Aj Green, Julio Jones, and
- 11:25Speaker 1: Calvin Johnson, Like they're four of the best receivers in
- 11:27Speaker 1: the last fifteen years. So if you get anything close
- 11:30Speaker 1: to any of those guys, you're going to be delighted.
- 11:33Speaker 1: And probably Odell is the one who doesn't fit as
- 11:35Speaker 1: much because he's not bigger like the other guys. But
- 11:37Speaker 1: even then, like the size doesn't really matter that much
- 11:39Speaker 1: because if Chase was two inches shorter, he'd still be
- 11:41Speaker 1: able to do all this with doacular things he does.
- 11:43Speaker 1: So the extra two inches is just a bonus, nice
- 11:46Speaker 1: thing for Key and Fahey, there's been a big debate
- 11:49Speaker 1: in Cincinnati for months. Give Burrow better protection by taking Sewell,
- 11:54Speaker 1: give Burrow an elite weapon by taking Chase. They chose Chase?
- 11:59Speaker 1: Did they make the move? I understand why there is
- 12:03Speaker 1: a thought process that a better offensive line will keep
- 12:06Speaker 1: you healthy and will protect your quarterback. And maybe there's
- 12:09Speaker 1: some reality in that, because if you get hit three
- 12:11Speaker 1: hundred and fifty times in a year, and said of
- 12:13Speaker 1: four hundred times in a year, you're probably less likely
- 12:15Speaker 1: to get injured. But the reality is that likely or
- 12:18Speaker 1: that percentage is probably like two or three percent, because
- 12:20Speaker 1: you're still getting hit three hundred and fifty times. Look
- 12:22Speaker 1: at Eli Manning spent this whole year between the offensive
- 12:24Speaker 1: lines that couldn't block. Look at Carson Wentz played behind
- 12:26Speaker 1: one of the best offensive lines I've seen in the
- 12:28Speaker 1: last twenty five years and got injured in a scramble play.
- 12:31Speaker 1: You're a quarterback, You're going to get hit like that's inevitable.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Even when your protection holds up perfectly, you're still going
- 12:36Speaker 1: to get hit, and you're gonna get bumped, and you're
- 12:37Speaker 1: gonna get knocked around. Yes, there's a great argument for protection.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Like with that said, protection is hugely, hugely important, but
- 12:44Speaker 1: you also have to understand the way this league is moving.
- 12:46Speaker 1: The way this league is moving is get as many
- 12:48Speaker 1: weapons as you can get. You get guys who will
- 12:50Speaker 1: let your quarterback get the ball out quickly, guys on
- 12:52Speaker 1: the outside who will make the defense scared of blitzing,
- 12:55Speaker 1: which makes the defense far more predictable. Now, and you've
- 12:58Speaker 1: got and actually this has come back to your original
- 13:00Speaker 1: question about how Borrow and Chase together is really promising
- 13:03Speaker 1: because Borrows the type of quarterback who can figure out
- 13:06Speaker 1: where to go with the ball very quickly and get
- 13:08Speaker 1: the ball out very quickly. He's not someone who needs
- 13:10Speaker 1: to hold it, needs to see the receiver come open.
- 13:12Speaker 1: So if you have two guys on the outside, they
- 13:14Speaker 1: were going to win quickly, and you've got Tyler boy,
- 13:16Speaker 1: who can obviously win quickly. You now have an opportunity
- 13:19Speaker 1: for Borrow to kind of play the way Tom Brady
- 13:21Speaker 1: played for so long, where catches the ball, it's gone,
- 13:23Speaker 1: catches the ball, it's gone, catches the ball, it's gone.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Not to say he will be Tom Brady, because that
- 13:27Speaker 1: again is like comparing to Calvin Johnson. It's an unfair
- 13:29Speaker 1: standard to put on people, but like that's a major
- 13:32Speaker 1: part of how the relationship between Brady and his offensive
- 13:35Speaker 1: line work. For so many years in New England, the
- 13:37Speaker 1: offensive line there was always very, very good, but they
- 13:40Speaker 1: were benefited by the ball coming out quickly, and that
- 13:42Speaker 1: was part of having Edelman and Welker and Gronk and
- 13:44Speaker 1: guys who just got open really quickly. So there are
- 13:46Speaker 1: different ways to protect your quarterback. There are different ways
- 13:49Speaker 1: to make your offense function. And since I don't really
- 13:52Speaker 1: want Borrow to be going under center, taking deep drops,
- 13:55Speaker 1: hitting deep shots off of play action all the time,
- 13:57Speaker 1: you want him to be catching the ball and releasing
- 13:59Speaker 1: it all the time. It makes sense to have that receiver. Now,
- 14:02Speaker 1: that doesn't mean you ignore your offensive line issues. But
- 14:05Speaker 1: like the other aspect of this is you're still pretty
- 14:07Speaker 1: excited about Jonah Williams. You're you're not like concerned about
- 14:10Speaker 1: having to start him. Riley Reef right tackle should be fine,
- 14:13Speaker 1: Like that shouldn't be any major concern. So even now
- 14:16Speaker 1: that you have gone weapons over improved protection and over
- 14:19Speaker 1: Seul and Soul great player obviously as well. No, you
- 14:22Speaker 1: couldn't really have gone wrong with this pick. It makes
- 14:25Speaker 1: a lot of sense for the short term, but it
- 14:26Speaker 1: also makes a lot of sense for the long term
- 14:28Speaker 1: for the identity of what the team will be. And
- 14:30Speaker 1: you can build around this triangle of Higgins, Chase and
- 14:33Speaker 1: Borrow and and you've still got a couple of editans
- 14:35Speaker 1: there who are pretty damn good. So you can't really
- 14:37Speaker 1: complain about what you've gotten now. It's it's a loading Garstle. Actually,
- 14:40Speaker 1: it reminds me of years and years ago Mike Tomlin
- 14:43Speaker 1: with Ben Roethlisberger took the line of Swede and with
- 14:46Speaker 1: Shared Mendenhall in the first round. Didn't work out. Like
- 14:49Speaker 1: Mendenhall obviously had a decent career but got injured. This
- 14:51Speaker 1: first year line of Swede was a disaster. But those guys.
- 14:54Speaker 1: The top process there was we had a quarterback who
- 14:57Speaker 1: could deal with the offensive line, and I thought the
- 14:59Speaker 1: tough process of it was really really smart and it
- 15:01Speaker 1: actually could have worked. They just missed on the players.
- 15:03Speaker 1: I don't think you're gonna miss on this player, so
- 15:04Speaker 1: I'm not concerned about that. But the thought process and
- 15:07Speaker 1: ideology of it, it's it's fine, it works and it
- 15:09Speaker 1: makes sense. Key And this has been great. I love

- 15:48Speaker 1: is presented by Bud Light Seltzer. It's light and refreshing
- 15:52Speaker 1: with a hint of fruit flavor. Zach Taylor and Jamar
- 15:55Speaker 1: Chase spoke to reporters shortly after the Bengals made their selection.
- 15:58Speaker 1: I've picked out a few of them most interesting things
- 16:00Speaker 1: they had to say. Beginning with the Bengals head coach.
- 16:05Speaker 1: We need to be more explosive, you know, that's one
- 16:07Speaker 1: of the things that we lacked these last two years, really,
- 16:09Speaker 1: and and so adding a guy like Jamar Chase when
- 16:12Speaker 1: you already got TV and you got t Higgins and
- 16:14Speaker 1: then we got good depth behind him as well, and
- 16:16Speaker 1: then you look at some of the other playmakers we
- 16:18Speaker 1: got on offense. We're really excited about the direction we're headed.
- 16:21Speaker 1: One are the things I heard a lot talking with
- 16:23Speaker 1: Jamar's high school coach is just his work ethic. How
- 16:27Speaker 1: much of that was a part of your decision as well. Absolutely,
- 16:32Speaker 1: he fits everything that we're about here and Cincinnati. That's
- 16:35Speaker 1: one of the things you can get. That's where Joe
- 16:37Speaker 1: Burrow comes into play. You know, you get a chance
- 16:39Speaker 1: to talk about a guy's work ethic, and for Joe
- 16:41Speaker 1: to talk about how much time they spend together even
- 16:43Speaker 1: in the spring, you know, just outside of football and
- 16:46Speaker 1: working on a one on one outside of time team activities,
- 16:49Speaker 1: tells you what you need to know about about him
- 16:52Speaker 1: and that he's going to fit right in with what
- 16:54Speaker 1: we're doing on offense and as team Zach. How much
- 16:57Speaker 1: did Joe campaign for Jamar and how much of that
- 17:01Speaker 1: success they had in twenty nineteen player role in this pick.
- 17:05Speaker 1: That's not really Joe's style, you know. I know that
- 17:07Speaker 1: was reported out there that that's not how he goes
- 17:09Speaker 1: about his business, you know. But I certainly went to
- 17:11Speaker 1: him and ask him specific questions about about not only there,
- 17:14Speaker 1: but of the players he's played with, and you could
- 17:17Speaker 1: tell that he had a great fondness for Jamar. He
- 17:19Speaker 1: would be excited to play with him again if that's
- 17:21Speaker 1: the direction we headed. But again that that's not really
- 17:23Speaker 1: Joe style to come up and say, hey, we need
- 17:26Speaker 1: to be taking this guy that that didn't happen at all.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Did the offensive lying depth Zach, in this draft make
- 17:32Speaker 1: it easier to take a wide receiver in round one?
- 17:36Speaker 1: We feel like there's some guys available that can help us.
- 17:39Speaker 1: We also feel like, you know, getting Jana back healthy,
- 17:41Speaker 1: getting Riley Reef over there at right tackle, that that
- 17:45Speaker 1: we got some guys coming back that will help us
- 17:47Speaker 1: that maybe weren't available to us all of last year.
- 17:49Speaker 1: And and so again, there will be some players in
- 17:52Speaker 1: this draft that that's a position we will continue to address,
- 17:54Speaker 1: but felt good about adding Jamar with the fifth pick.
- 17:58Speaker 1: When you asked Joe Burrow for some information about Jamar,
- 18:02Speaker 1: was there anything especially impactful or any story that he
- 18:07Speaker 1: shared that you really resonated with you? I don't know
- 18:10Speaker 1: that I needed a lot of convincing necessarily. I just
- 18:13Speaker 1: said a scale of one to ten, what would be
- 18:15Speaker 1: your excitement level if we had a Jamar chase? And
- 18:17Speaker 1: he said ten, And that's pretty good answer. It appeared
- 18:22Speaker 1: that Jamar was wearing orange and black shoes. I don't
- 18:25Speaker 1: know if he anticipated this or hoped for it, or
- 18:27Speaker 1: if I'm just reading too much into it, but how
- 18:30Speaker 1: did he react when you made the call? You could
- 18:33Speaker 1: see there was some excitement there. You know, he was
- 18:35Speaker 1: always in Cleveland with his family, and you could hear
- 18:37Speaker 1: the cheers in the background. And it's one of those
- 18:40Speaker 1: experiences I don't take for granted, being able to share
- 18:43Speaker 1: that news with somebody and its life changing news. And
- 18:46Speaker 1: I could tell the excitement level. You could see whoever
- 18:49Speaker 1: was behind him was excited as well, So it was
- 18:51Speaker 1: a really cool experience. Jamar attended the draft with his
- 18:54Speaker 1: family as well. As LSU head coach at Or Jaron
- 18:58Speaker 1: and wide receivers coach Nicky Joseph. Here are a few
- 19:01Speaker 1: of Jamar's comments to the Cincinnati media. It was an
- 19:06Speaker 1: amazing feeling, you know, getting that call, of course, you know,
- 19:09Speaker 1: being a fifth pick. I just couldn't really believe it
- 19:12Speaker 1: at the most part. You know, I was wondering who
- 19:14Speaker 1: was actually calling my phone, Like like if somebody really
- 19:16Speaker 1: calling me right now? And uh I see no Ohio
- 19:21Speaker 1: area code and I just was like, this is it?
- 19:24Speaker 1: And uh hey, coach called me. Coach Coach called me
- 19:27Speaker 1: and told me he's like, we're gonna We're gonna draft
- 19:30Speaker 1: you and make your Cincinnati Bengal your more. Twitter was
- 19:33Speaker 1: losing its mind about the shoes when they saw your
- 19:36Speaker 1: shoes with the orange and blacks, So we have to know, um,
- 19:40Speaker 1: crazy was that Was that planned out thinking like the
- 19:43Speaker 1: Bengals might take you? Did you have a good feeling
- 19:45Speaker 1: they might, did you want them to? I mean, what
- 19:47Speaker 1: was the thought process in that? It's crazy because the
- 19:50Speaker 1: shoes were actually not This was the last minute pick
- 19:53Speaker 1: with the shoes actually, and it just hops so happened
- 19:56Speaker 1: to be with the orange color. You know, I like
- 19:57Speaker 1: them to like how they look with my suit, and
- 19:59Speaker 1: I stayed with it, so I even had to go
- 20:01Speaker 1: get an orange handkerchief just to make sure it looked correctly. Jamara,
- 20:06Speaker 1: you mentioned the excitement to play with Joe again. Do
- 20:10Speaker 1: you feel like you guys can be even more dangerous
- 20:11Speaker 1: in the NFL than you were at LSU? Definitely? You
- 20:14Speaker 1: know there's always room to grow, and I think this
- 20:17Speaker 1: is not a way another chance for me to grow
- 20:18Speaker 1: and also a Joe. I definitely can learn more about
- 20:21Speaker 1: the game because he definitely taught me some stuff when
- 20:24Speaker 1: I was at LSU, So I think this will be easy.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Did he call and wish your congratulations yet or text?
- 20:30Speaker 1: I actually don't know. My phone has been ringing in
- 20:33Speaker 1: my pocket for the past ten minutes. I haven't I
- 20:35Speaker 1: haven't took it out of my pocket yet actually, so
- 20:37Speaker 1: I'm hoping he called, Jamara. How much have you guys
- 20:40Speaker 1: talked to you and Joe about this potential reunion? Me
- 20:43Speaker 1: and Joe talked about this maybe like three or four times. Actually,
- 20:46Speaker 1: we talked about a good bit of times. He texted
- 20:49Speaker 1: me this morning is letting me know, get your bags packed.
- 20:51Speaker 1: So I guess that means that was gonna be the pick.
- 20:53Speaker 1: I don't know if that was a hint or what.
- 20:54Speaker 1: So he sent me that little Texas morning. I was like, okay,
- 20:58Speaker 1: I'm ready, bro, I remember you got I kept a
- 21:02Speaker 1: list on your mirror. I think at home, you kept
- 21:04Speaker 1: a list on your mirror of goals, right, wondering just
- 21:07Speaker 1: kind of broadly what they were, and was being the
- 21:10Speaker 1: fifth pick in the draft ever on that list? Actually,
- 21:15Speaker 1: the fifth pick in the draft was not on that list.
- 21:18Speaker 1: I just wanted to be drafted, you know. I think
- 21:20Speaker 1: that was the biggest happiness I had all night, you know,
- 21:23Speaker 1: being drafted. Um, but you know, everything else is following
- 21:28Speaker 1: in place now. It was a playing for a national
- 21:31Speaker 1: champion and stuff like that, and getting fat. Yeah. My
- 21:33Speaker 1: goals on my on my mirror were you know, um
- 21:36Speaker 1: ten touch downs, fifteen hundred yards, one hundred yards of game. Um.
- 21:40Speaker 1: I actually had the Building Caff Award in my in
- 21:42Speaker 1: on top of my mirror, UM a few games in
- 21:45Speaker 1: so I actually know I had a chance of winning
- 21:47Speaker 1: it once the season started. Did you have any goals
- 21:49Speaker 1: for the pros? I mean, you know, what are you
- 21:51Speaker 1: gonna put on your mirror? You know tomorrow? Do you
- 21:52Speaker 1: have any goals for your for your pro career. I
- 21:56Speaker 1: definitely have some goals. I want to win work good
- 21:58Speaker 1: of the year. Um, I want to have ten touchdowns.
- 22:00Speaker 1: I don't want to have at least fifteen hundred yards
- 22:02Speaker 1: or a thousand yards minimum for this year. Jamar's I'm
- 22:06Speaker 1: sure you've seen the new rules where receivers can wear
- 22:09Speaker 1: single digit numbers. Are you gonna do? You want to
- 22:11Speaker 1: wear number one for the Bengals? That's the plan getting
- 22:15Speaker 1: back in one. I think that's that's my goal right there.
- 22:17Speaker 1: I think that's what I want to do. Bengals have
- 22:19Speaker 1: had some great wide receivers over the years, Jamar, most
- 22:21Speaker 1: recently Aj Green and before that, Chad Johnson. Any thoughts
- 22:26Speaker 1: on those two guys and following in that legacy. I'm
- 22:30Speaker 1: gonna break every record they got at the Bengals. That's
- 22:32Speaker 1: my goal right now. I'm telling you right now, I'm
- 22:34Speaker 1: gonna break every record they have. I don't know how
- 22:36Speaker 1: I'm gonna do it, but it's gonna get done. It
- 22:39Speaker 1: certainly doesn't lack for confidence. Now, time to recap Round
- 22:43Speaker 1: one and look ahead the rounds two and three with
- 22:45Speaker 1: my broadcast partner Dave Lapham Lap For the longest time,
- 22:49Speaker 1: I've been saying that I was a member of Team Sewel.
- 22:52Speaker 1: I kept joking I was a card carrying member of
- 22:54Speaker 1: Teams Sewel. But as the hours went by leading up
- 22:58Speaker 1: to the draft, I can honestly say that I had
- 23:00Speaker 1: kind of flipped over to Team Chase. I don't know
- 23:03Speaker 1: if it's because I thought they were going to take
- 23:05Speaker 1: Chase and I was preparing myself for it, but it
- 23:09Speaker 1: really swung so much that when Atlanta was on the
- 23:12Speaker 1: clock and we were waiting to see if they were
- 23:15Speaker 1: going to take Kyle Pitts, I actually got nervous that
- 23:18Speaker 1: they are going to take Chase. Yeah. Yeah, I think
- 23:22Speaker 1: I think the Bengals probably have a little angst there too,
- 23:25Speaker 1: because that would not have been been out of the
- 23:28Speaker 1: realm of possibility. There was no question about that. Um,
- 23:31Speaker 1: they're all worthy of top five picks, of course, and
- 23:35Speaker 1: and UH and Chase and Uh and Pitts went still
- 23:40Speaker 1: when at number seven, Yeah, it was. It was interesting,
- 23:43Speaker 1: And honestly, I think the uh, the mindset that the
- 23:47Speaker 1: Bengals have in terms of take two and thirty eight
- 23:50Speaker 1: our excuse me, take number five and number thirty eight
- 23:53Speaker 1: and get the best value. You know, uh played all
- 23:56Speaker 1: well because offensive lineman. There were three three offensive linemen
- 24:02Speaker 1: taken in the first fourteen selections, and then two more
- 24:06Speaker 1: the rest of the draft of the round, so there're
- 24:08Speaker 1: only five offensive linemen off the board, and so there's
- 24:12Speaker 1: some good choices at offensive line in terms of depth
- 24:15Speaker 1: there left in the second round. And then I thought, man,
- 24:18Speaker 1: it's going to be tough because there's a lot of
- 24:20Speaker 1: edge rushers left as well. Well. Four out of the
- 24:23Speaker 1: five last picks in the first round where all edge
- 24:26Speaker 1: rush guys. My guy Turner went, try On went, you
- 24:31Speaker 1: know another guy that I thought it might be, you know,
- 24:33Speaker 1: somebody that you think about Away went and Russo went.
- 24:39Speaker 1: So there was a run on that down the stretch.
- 24:42Speaker 1: But it still leaves, you know, quite a few offensive
- 24:45Speaker 1: linemen for them to think about, that's for sure. And
- 24:48Speaker 1: we will definitely break down some of those second round
- 24:50Speaker 1: possibilities and maybe even third round possibilities in just a second.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Let's get back though to Jamar Chase for just a moment.
- 24:57Speaker 1: We were part of the Cincinnati media that took part
- 25:01Speaker 1: in Zoom Calls with Zach Taylor, Brian Callahan, the offensive coordinator,
- 25:05Speaker 1: and then jamar Chase anything jump out from those conversations
- 25:09Speaker 1: to you. Not really, I mean it was all it
- 25:12Speaker 1: was all pretty much things that we had heard, you
- 25:16Speaker 1: know about about Chase his game. Um. Obviously, the interesting
- 25:21Speaker 1: little nugget was that you know, Joe Joe Barrow text
- 25:24Speaker 1: to texted him and reached out to him and let
- 25:25Speaker 1: him all go ahead and pack your bags. You're coming
- 25:27Speaker 1: to uh, You're coming to Cincinnati. So obviously, uh, there
- 25:32Speaker 1: was a big uh, a big interest and reunite those
- 25:35Speaker 1: two guys with the talents and skills that they showed
- 25:38Speaker 1: in that twenty nineteen season for sure. Um, but I
- 25:42Speaker 1: think the one thing that struck me about him is
- 25:45Speaker 1: he's got a he's got a personality. He's got a
- 25:47Speaker 1: good sense of humor. I was, I was thoroughly entertained
- 25:51Speaker 1: by the guy. Yeah, I thought, I think that, uh,
- 25:54Speaker 1: he's gonna he's gonna bring a little bit of juice
- 25:56Speaker 1: in a lot of different ways to the locker room.
- 25:58Speaker 1: And uh, first and foremost though, is the electric play.
- 26:03Speaker 1: I think that he's going to be. He's going to
- 26:05Speaker 1: be somebody that obviously Joe Burrow knows how consistent a
- 26:09Speaker 1: player he can be, how explosive a player he can
- 26:12Speaker 1: be and uh, and I think that's gonna that's gonna
- 26:16Speaker 1: raise the boat, There's no question about it. I thought
- 26:19Speaker 1: Zach Taylor was interesting when he said early on, we
- 26:22Speaker 1: need to be more explosive offensively. So that was obviously
- 26:26Speaker 1: a key reason why they elected to go with Jamar
- 26:28Speaker 1: Chase over Pinney Suel or others. And then when Brian
- 26:32Speaker 1: Callahan talked about in the current NFL, you can't hold
- 26:35Speaker 1: on to the ball anymore, like the days of the
- 26:37Speaker 1: seven step drop are over. You've got to get rid
- 26:40Speaker 1: of it quickly because the pass rush has become so
- 26:43Speaker 1: fierce and as a result, you need guys that can
- 26:46Speaker 1: win quickly as wide receivers, and Jamar Chase definitely gives
- 26:50Speaker 1: them somebody that can do that. I agree with that,
- 26:53Speaker 1: and the thing I also liked the comment that Bryan
- 26:57Speaker 1: Callahan made when he said his mindset is to score
- 27:01Speaker 1: every time he gets his hands on the football, and
- 27:04Speaker 1: that you know, he's a touchdown maker extraordinary in twenty
- 27:08Speaker 1: nineteen with twenty of them. Uh he and he led
- 27:10Speaker 1: the country with twenty four plays of over twenty yards.
- 27:13Speaker 1: So the explosive this the ability to finish the ability
- 27:17Speaker 1: to you know, take the ball the distance. Um you
- 27:20Speaker 1: know that, uh, you know those those all all or
- 27:24Speaker 1: something that you're starving for. And I think, honestly, this
- 27:29Speaker 1: guy runs. He's such a good running with the ball.
- 27:31Speaker 1: After the catch, you can line him up in the
- 27:34Speaker 1: backfield and run a toss sweep with the guy. I
- 27:36Speaker 1: think he's that good of a runner. He's got a
- 27:39Speaker 1: low center of gravity's he's strong where he needs to be,
- 27:41Speaker 1: strong in his lower body, and I think he's gonna
- 27:44Speaker 1: be and I think he's gonna be tough to tackle.
- 27:46Speaker 1: I think he's going to break a lot of tackles
- 27:48Speaker 1: and with that four three four speed, man, I'm telling you,
- 27:52Speaker 1: and look look for some big plays from him. I
- 27:55Speaker 1: look for him to be a big contributor in the
- 27:58Speaker 1: screen game, know, the wide receiver screen game, the alley screens,
- 28:02Speaker 1: the slot screens. And I like his position versatility. You know,
- 28:05Speaker 1: he a lot of people think that he could be
- 28:10Speaker 1: he could project to be one of the best outside
- 28:12Speaker 1: receivers in the game as well as one of the
- 28:14Speaker 1: best inside receivers in the game. And he didn't show
- 28:17Speaker 1: any bashfulness. And the other thing I liked about him
- 28:20Speaker 1: was his confidence. You know what what, I'm going to
- 28:24Speaker 1: break those records with the records of AJ Green and
- 28:27Speaker 1: chat out Joe Sinkers. I'm going to break those records.
- 28:29Speaker 1: That's my goal. And I don't think it's uh you know,
- 28:33Speaker 1: I think it's just confidence that I don't there's a difference,
- 28:37Speaker 1: I guess between cockiness and confidence, and we'll see which
- 28:40Speaker 1: which one he is. But uh, I like it. I
- 28:43Speaker 1: like the fact that he feels like he's going to
- 28:45Speaker 1: be a playmaker, make plays, do a lot of good
- 28:48Speaker 1: things and and add to the explosiveness or the football team.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Like Zach was talking about, he basically moves into the
- 28:55Speaker 1: starting lineup in the spot that AJ Green played last year,
- 28:58Speaker 1: and AJ last year had no explosiveness. His game basically
- 29:02Speaker 1: had become run a slant box, a guy out used
- 29:06Speaker 1: his height in his reach to make the catch maybe
- 29:09Speaker 1: a game eight to ten yards. There wasn't much after
- 29:12Speaker 1: the catch. Obviously, AJ did all of those things early
- 29:15Speaker 1: in his career, but last year he was more or
- 29:17Speaker 1: less a box out your defender, possessioned receiver. And Jamar Chase,
- 29:23Speaker 1: on the other hand, is a guy that can take
- 29:24Speaker 1: one of those slants and go eighty yards. Yeah. And
- 29:28Speaker 1: the thing is, you know, I was I was very
- 29:30Speaker 1: interested in seeing when AJ came back to the mix,
- 29:35Speaker 1: how are they going to cover. Are they're gonna put
- 29:37Speaker 1: the number one corner on him? Will it be number two?
- 29:39Speaker 1: Number three? A lot of times it was number three,
- 29:41Speaker 1: and he wasn't winning consistently, you know, against that number
- 29:44Speaker 1: three guy. So now you're talking about you know, Chase
- 29:48Speaker 1: and te Higgins and then Tyler Boyden slot Man, You've
- 29:53Speaker 1: got somebody, somebody is going to have the lesser corner.
- 29:57Speaker 1: And I think I think the perfect spot for Chase
- 30:01Speaker 1: is get that x X receiver spot. You know where
- 30:04Speaker 1: you're split in. You're out there by yourself. It's one
- 30:07Speaker 1: on one. You know, if they roll coverage that way,
- 30:10Speaker 1: Tee Higgins and Tyler boy they're gonna they're gonna feast
- 30:13Speaker 1: on the other side of the football. So, you know,
- 30:15Speaker 1: I think that formationally and people fill in those formation
- 30:20Speaker 1: spots in creating mismatches and matchup favorable matchups for the
- 30:25Speaker 1: Bengals in the passing game is going to be a
- 30:27Speaker 1: big deal. All right. So let's move on today two
- 30:32Speaker 1: rounds two and three. The Bengals will have the sixth
- 30:35Speaker 1: pick in the second round. They had the fifth pick
- 30:36Speaker 1: in the first, but they've got the sixth pick in
- 30:38Speaker 1: the second round, number thirty eight overall, and then they're
- 30:41Speaker 1: back to the fifth pick in the third round, which
- 30:43Speaker 1: will be number sixty nine overall. We certainly would anticipate
- 30:48Speaker 1: that they're going to go offensive line in the second round.
- 30:51Speaker 1: I suppose an edge rusher is possible, but offensive line
- 30:56Speaker 1: seems to be the most likely scenario. As you pointed out,
- 30:59Speaker 1: five offensive linemen were taken in round one. Piney Sewell
- 31:03Speaker 1: was the seventh pick, Rashaan Slater went thirteenth, Elijah Vera
- 31:07Speaker 1: Tucker went fourteenth, alex we Leatherwood seventeenth to the Raiders.
- 31:13Speaker 1: That was a guy that a lot of people had
- 31:14Speaker 1: kind of targeted as a Cincinnati possibility. In round two
- 31:18Speaker 1: he went middle of round one, and then Christian Derrisau
- 31:21Speaker 1: went to the Vikings at number twenty three. So that
- 31:23Speaker 1: leaves a lot of good offensive lineman. Now keep in mind,
- 31:26Speaker 1: they do pick sixth, so you know one or two
- 31:29Speaker 1: of these offensive lineman will probably go before they pick
- 31:32Speaker 1: in the second round, unless they elect to move up.
- 31:35Speaker 1: I wouldn't necessarily anticipate that but the highest ranked offensive
- 31:40Speaker 1: lineman according to most of the things that I've looked
- 31:43Speaker 1: at that did not get selected was Tevin Jenkins from
- 31:47Speaker 1: Oklahoma State twenty fourth on Dane Brugler's board, twenty first
- 31:52Speaker 1: on the Athletics Consensus board where they looked at a
- 31:54Speaker 1: lot of the different big boards, thirty first according to
- 31:58Speaker 1: Pro Football Focus. So everybody to have a first round
- 32:00Speaker 1: grade on Tevin Jenkins six six three fifteen pounds, thirty
- 32:05Speaker 1: three and a half inch arms, but he didn't go.
- 32:08Speaker 1: He didn't go, and and supposedly he plays for the
- 32:11Speaker 1: Nasty Street You supposedly he's very, very physical, and you
- 32:15Speaker 1: know a lot of people had him going to the
- 32:18Speaker 1: Pittsburgh Steelers. I saw in some mocks going there, and
- 32:22Speaker 1: you know that's he's an AFC North kind of guy.
- 32:25Speaker 1: So I think that he's got to be somebody that
- 32:28Speaker 1: is potentially one that they're targeting. But what could happen
- 32:33Speaker 1: is exactly what happened at the end of the first round,
- 32:35Speaker 1: where four out of the five picks, New Orleans went
- 32:38Speaker 1: edge rush, Green Bay went went in the secondary, and
- 32:42Speaker 1: then Buffalo and Baltimore and Tampa Bay all went edge rush,
- 32:46Speaker 1: So four out of five guys because edge rush. Not
- 32:50Speaker 1: many edge guys had gone, so there was a run
- 32:53Speaker 1: on them. So now everybody's shuffling their board just like
- 32:57Speaker 1: the Bengals are doing, and they're saying, wow, I mean,
- 32:59Speaker 1: there's some value with the offensive line, so they don't
- 33:02Speaker 1: pick till number six. So honestly, Dan, I still think
- 33:06Speaker 1: there are six candidates out there, though, you know, Jenkins
- 33:09Speaker 1: being one of them. Obviously, Lyndon Dickerson there must be
- 33:13Speaker 1: some sort of an injury issue because a lot of
- 33:16Speaker 1: people had him going in the first round. He didn't
- 33:18Speaker 1: get drafted. The center out of Alabama and he's probably
- 33:20Speaker 1: the only Alabama Crimson Tide player that didn't get drafted
- 33:24Speaker 1: in the first round. Gosh, six of the first twenty
- 33:26Speaker 1: four guys were Crimson Tide players, I mean right there.
- 33:31Speaker 1: But you know, Jackson Carmen's there, Lean Pikenberg's there, Dylan
- 33:36Speaker 1: ray Dunns is there. You know, there are still guys
- 33:39Speaker 1: there in the in that uh, you know, second round though,
- 33:42Speaker 1: I think still have quite a bit of value, so
- 33:45Speaker 1: it's going to be interesting. Samuel Cosby also did not
- 33:49Speaker 1: go out of Texas, so one of the highly ranked
- 33:51Speaker 1: offensive lyman Walker litter A Walker Little, a person that
- 33:54Speaker 1: you've mentioned before out of Stanford. Now he is an
- 33:58Speaker 1: injury issue guy. And Landon Dickerson did have a torn
- 34:02Speaker 1: acl last year, so that's a big reason why he's
- 34:05Speaker 1: still on the board. But you know, the guys that
- 34:08Speaker 1: we've just mentioned have been mentioned as first round candidates
- 34:13Speaker 1: in many cases and they're still there. So they are
- 34:17Speaker 1: going to have the opportunity to get a highly graded
- 34:20Speaker 1: offensive lineman in round two. Well, I mean, you know,
- 34:24Speaker 1: Dickerson obviously has the rehabit from the knee, like you said, Dan,
- 34:28Speaker 1: but shoot, I saw him doing like a cartwheel down
- 34:32Speaker 1: there during the pro day, so I'm wondering how seriously
- 34:35Speaker 1: affected he might be. But I mean, okay, say we
- 34:39Speaker 1: go guys that would still be on the board. The
- 34:42Speaker 1: people would think highly rated this offensive lineman, depending on
- 34:45Speaker 1: your need, interior or on the edge. Landon Dickerson, Jackson, Carmen, Ikenberg,
- 34:51Speaker 1: Rad Dons caused me walk a little. That's six right there.
- 34:56Speaker 1: So the Bengals are going to get one of them.
- 34:58Speaker 1: I mean, if every everybody takes one, they still end
- 35:02Speaker 1: up with a guy that I think would would make
- 35:05Speaker 1: sense and they'd say, hey, you know what we were
- 35:07Speaker 1: right when you take the value of going receiver at
- 35:11Speaker 1: five and an offensive lineman at thirty eight as opposed
- 35:15Speaker 1: to taking Penney Seul, and then what kind of receiver
- 35:18Speaker 1: would be left? You know at thirty eight, they're they're
- 35:21Speaker 1: probably right, or I guess it's to be determined. You
- 35:25Speaker 1: certainly can't just you know, assume it. But I don't
- 35:29Speaker 1: think they'll have a problem with any one of those
- 35:32Speaker 1: potential candidates being there when they pick at thirty eight.
- 35:36Speaker 1: In the offensive line, I think that, you know, Frank
- 35:39Speaker 1: Pollack will be happy. What do you think the likelihood
- 35:42Speaker 1: is at this point of double dipping offensive lineman rounds
- 35:47Speaker 1: two and three, or are there so many guards in
- 35:50Speaker 1: this draft that the more likely scenario is offensive line
- 35:55Speaker 1: edge rush or defensive lineman and then come back for
- 35:59Speaker 1: an interior type lineman in round four. I'm thinking that
- 36:02Speaker 1: might be a little bit more of the play because
- 36:06Speaker 1: you know, if you if you double dip, if you
- 36:10Speaker 1: go offensive lineman in the third round, there there are
- 36:12Speaker 1: guys out there like Spencer Brown, Dante Smith. I mean
- 36:15Speaker 1: guys like that. In my estimation, I mean Spencer Brown
- 36:19Speaker 1: in the in the early third round. That's a good fifth.
- 36:23Speaker 1: You know, I guess I guess you'd have to say,
- 36:26Speaker 1: all right, well, we're taking offensive lineman at thirty eight,
- 36:29Speaker 1: what's the run on edge rushers? There's more depth in
- 36:33Speaker 1: the offensive line than edge rush probably, but you know,
- 36:35Speaker 1: did the did the edge rush get damaged in terms
- 36:38Speaker 1: of a run in round two? And it's clear cut,
- 36:41Speaker 1: you know when we get into at sixty nine that
- 36:44Speaker 1: it's that it's going to be it's gonna be uh
- 36:47Speaker 1: you know that that offensive lineman instead of going back
- 36:51Speaker 1: to back, that sixty nine guy will be the edge
- 36:54Speaker 1: best edge guy that's left as opposed to another offensive
- 36:58Speaker 1: lineman in consecutive rounds two and three. So unless there's
- 37:02Speaker 1: a big disparity, Dan, you know, I mean, it's if
- 37:04Speaker 1: your board dictates, you know, it's closed. It's only we
- 37:09Speaker 1: got we have an edge rush guy that we've got
- 37:12Speaker 1: rated at at sixty five, and we have an offensive
- 37:16Speaker 1: lineman that we got rated at sixty nine. Well, we'll
- 37:19Speaker 1: probably go at the edge rush guy. You know, but
- 37:22Speaker 1: if we're reversed, what would you do? Would you go
- 37:24Speaker 1: at the offensive lineman? Would you go at the edge
- 37:26Speaker 1: rush guy. It's going to be interesting, but the good
- 37:29Speaker 1: news is they'll they'll have some options there. I wrote
- 37:33Speaker 1: down the names of six edge rushers that are still
- 37:36Speaker 1: available now. Some of these guys are going to go
- 37:39Speaker 1: in round two, so if the Bengals go offensive line,
- 37:42Speaker 1: these guys won't all still be there in round three,
- 37:45Speaker 1: but maybe one or two still is. Carlos Basham from
- 37:49Speaker 1: Wake Forest is still there. Had eleven sacks a couple
- 37:51Speaker 1: of years ago, two hundred and seventy four pounds and
- 37:54Speaker 1: ran a four five nine forty. Joseph Osi from Texas
- 37:59Speaker 1: is still there. Unbelievable athletic freak two hundred and fifty
- 38:04Speaker 1: six pounds, did an eleven foot basically an eleven foot
- 38:07Speaker 1: broad jump. Ronnie Ronnie Perkins from Oklahoma is still there,
- 38:11Speaker 1: although he might be a character a question mark because
- 38:15Speaker 1: he was a suspended early portion of last year after
- 38:18Speaker 1: failing a drug test. I know in a previous conversation
- 38:21Speaker 1: with you you've mentioned the name Dioodangbo from Vanderbilt two
- 38:26Speaker 1: hundred and eighty five pounds, thirty five and a half
- 38:29Speaker 1: inch arms, explosive athlete, team captain, although I guess he
- 38:33Speaker 1: had a recent achilles issue, but certainly a candidate to
- 38:37Speaker 1: keep an eye on. You've got Rashad Weaver from pitt
- 38:41Speaker 1: you have Quincy Rochet from Miami. You started out his
- 38:43Speaker 1: college career at Temple, set the all time sacks record
- 38:47Speaker 1: in the American Athletic Conference, and then transferred to Miami.
- 38:51Speaker 1: So I saw him when he was still a Temple
- 38:53Speaker 1: and he was something special. So those are you know,
- 38:56Speaker 1: six names that are still out there as possible Ledge
- 38:59Speaker 1: Rush candidates. Yeah, and Cameron Sample. You know, some people
- 39:03Speaker 1: talk about a little bit the kid from tulane Um,
- 39:06Speaker 1: Like you said, vander Belt kids has got he's got
- 39:09Speaker 1: that Achilles issue. But man, he is long. I mean
- 39:13Speaker 1: eighty six and a half inch wingspan. I mean that's
- 39:16Speaker 1: a condor. It's unbelievable. Um, you know, and he's he's uh,
- 39:21Speaker 1: he's versatile. You know, he can rush inside and rush
- 39:24Speaker 1: on the edge. He's got some twitchiness to him. He's
- 39:26Speaker 1: got a good first step. You know, I'd like that guy.
- 39:30Speaker 1: My man, Peyton Turner went pretty high. You know, I didn't.
- 39:32Speaker 1: I didn't. I was hoping that he might be there
- 39:35Speaker 1: as a consideration at thirty eight. But boy, he went, uh,
- 39:38Speaker 1: you know, he won ten ten spots higher. I think
- 39:41Speaker 1: he went at twenty eight. If I'm not mistaken to
- 39:44Speaker 1: New Orleans eight to the Saints, that is correct. Yeah, yeah,
- 39:48Speaker 1: So it's gonna be uh, it's gonna be interesting to
- 39:51Speaker 1: see how it plays out. But there's gonna be plenty
- 39:54Speaker 1: of options on the board. That's the good news. Dan
- 39:56Speaker 1: is you know, sixth six pack in that second round,
- 40:00Speaker 1: and you know, I wonder if the phone starts ringing
- 40:03Speaker 1: a little bit again, if somebody has somebody targeted and
- 40:07Speaker 1: you can pick up an extra third round pick and
- 40:10Speaker 1: don't move back too far. I mean, we're talking about
- 40:12Speaker 1: six offensive linemen another half a dozen defensive lineman, it
- 40:16Speaker 1: might be okay with I mean, if you could move
- 40:18Speaker 1: back from the sixth pick in that second round to
- 40:20Speaker 1: number ten or number twelve, you know, no further than that,
- 40:24Speaker 1: and pick up an extra third or fourth round guy
- 40:27Speaker 1: might might want to think about that. There's there's no
- 40:30Speaker 1: reason not to. How about defensive tackle Milton Williams out
- 40:34Speaker 1: of Louisiana Tech is a third round candidate. That's a
- 40:37Speaker 1: name that's been attached to the Bengals and quite a
- 40:39Speaker 1: few mock drafts. A little undersized for tackle six three,
- 40:43Speaker 1: two eighty four pounds, but a great athlete ran a
- 40:45Speaker 1: four six three forty, had ten sacks over the last
- 40:49Speaker 1: couple of years, typically in that kind of seventy to
- 40:53Speaker 1: ninety range on most of the you know, the big boards,
- 40:57Speaker 1: and that would be the sixty ninth pick in the draft.
- 40:59Speaker 1: I would have no problem with that, you know. I mean,
- 41:04Speaker 1: I think in a perfect world, I'd like to see
- 41:07Speaker 1: an edge guy, you know, that could that could give
- 41:10Speaker 1: the versatility or rushing as a three technique inside as
- 41:14Speaker 1: well in the nickel. You know, I guess I would
- 41:16Speaker 1: like to go that route if if at all feasible.
- 41:20Speaker 1: But I wouldn't have a problem honestly, you know, both
- 41:23Speaker 1: both lines of scrimmage, I would have no issue with them,
- 41:27Speaker 1: adding you know, depth and productivity up and down the
- 41:31Speaker 1: line of scrimmage on both lines of scrimmage. It it
- 41:33Speaker 1: wouldn't be a problem to me at all. All right,
- 41:36Speaker 1: just for the fun of it, let's make a prediction
- 41:39Speaker 1: on the second round pick. Let's throw, well, each throw
- 41:43Speaker 1: out a name. We assume it's going to be an
- 41:45Speaker 1: offensive lineman or maybe you don't. I don't know, but
- 41:48Speaker 1: let's throw out a name for who they will take
- 41:51Speaker 1: with a thirty eighth pick. In the draft, assuming they
- 41:53Speaker 1: do not trade back, I'll say I can burden leam
- 41:59Speaker 1: Ikenburg from Notre Dame. Do you think he'll be a
- 42:02Speaker 1: think he'll be a guard in the NFL? Or will
- 42:04Speaker 1: he stay at tackle? I think he's a guard. I
- 42:06Speaker 1: think he's a guard in the NFL. You know my
- 42:08Speaker 1: other I would I'd probably either go Red Duns or Eikenberg.
- 42:14Speaker 1: I'd probably go amongst those two guys. All right, so
- 42:18Speaker 1: you take Eikenberg, I'll take Dylan Radens. I think it's
- 42:22Speaker 1: pronounced from North Dakota State. Yeah, left tackle there. Do
- 42:26Speaker 1: you think he's a guard in the NFL? Or do
- 42:29Speaker 1: you think he stays at tackle? I think he's got
- 42:32Speaker 1: a better chance to stay at tackle. He's a little
- 42:35Speaker 1: bit longer. Ye, he's got thirty four arms instead of
- 42:37Speaker 1: thirty two and a half inch arms. That's what Eikenberg's
- 42:40Speaker 1: issue is. But Eikenberg's found a way to overcome it.
- 42:45Speaker 1: And Eikenberg's less than eighty inch reach, whereas Raduns is not.
- 42:51Speaker 1: He's up over that. So the measurable say that that
- 42:55Speaker 1: that's a possibility. The other guy, though, I mean cosm
- 42:59Speaker 1: was round or in a lot of mocks, I mean,
- 43:01Speaker 1: Cosmo was a first round guy as well as Walker
- 43:04Speaker 1: Little was the first round guy in some mocks as well.
- 43:07Speaker 1: So if you want to go pure tackle, you know,
- 43:10Speaker 1: I think maybe those guys caused me and Walker Little
- 43:13Speaker 1: you know, would be potential candidates as well. And I guess, yeah,
- 43:17Speaker 1: we have no idea you know what the other five
- 43:21Speaker 1: teams ahead of the Bengals are going to do. But
- 43:23Speaker 1: I'd be good with any of those bad boys. And
- 43:25Speaker 1: there there's no way. I shouldn't say, no way, but
- 43:28Speaker 1: it would be mighty crazy all five people took offensive
- 43:35Speaker 1: piment for the Bengals with that six pick in the
- 43:37Speaker 1: second round, wouldn't you agree? I'd be shocked if that
- 43:41Speaker 1: were the case. We didn't even mention Tevin Jenkins. In
- 43:44Speaker 1: my case, I'm assuming he goes in those first five
- 43:47Speaker 1: picks of the second round. Me too, I think when
- 43:49Speaker 1: people reset their board, they're gonna be like, what, Kevin
- 43:54Speaker 1: Jenkins is still there? And I think guys like you know,
- 43:57Speaker 1: cause me, Walker Little, those guys something I think, particularly
- 44:02Speaker 1: if you project to plate be able to play that
- 44:04Speaker 1: tackle position, you know you're gonna be You're gonna be
- 44:07Speaker 1: the higher, the more likely candidate to go. So I
- 44:10Speaker 1: think we're looking at guys that are you know, more
- 44:13Speaker 1: tackle guard candidates that that might might be there, and
- 44:17Speaker 1: and probably a higher chance of being there. But man,
- 44:21Speaker 1: if one of those tackles showed up, bingo, man, jump
- 44:24Speaker 1: on that bad boy. All right, it's late. I'm now
- 44:28Speaker 1: a card carrying member of Team Chase, looking forward to
- 44:32Speaker 1: rounds two and three and talking again tomorrow night. Yeah,
- 44:35Speaker 1: I mean, it'd be a great draft. And if you know,
- 44:39Speaker 1: got the receiver, get an offensive lineman and edge rushed
- 44:43Speaker 1: guy in the third round, go back to old line
- 44:45Speaker 1: in the fourth round. And you know, I mean if if,
- 44:48Speaker 1: if guys in the fourth round, if guys like you know,
- 44:52Speaker 1: Tommy Doyle, potentially a guy out of University Miami of Ohio,
- 44:57Speaker 1: if he's there in the fourth round, he might be
- 45:00Speaker 1: you know, a good possibility. You just uh, you don't
- 45:05Speaker 1: know at that point. That's that's a big projection. You
- 45:07Speaker 1: don't know what's going to happen, never mind in the
- 45:10Speaker 1: in the second round, the third round yet. So but
- 45:13Speaker 1: I still think, and a lot of people you know,
- 45:16Speaker 1: are obviously in this school of thought. I think that
- 45:19Speaker 1: there's plenty of depth in the offensive line. I think
- 45:22Speaker 1: they can attack it again in the fourth round, Dan,
- 45:24Speaker 1: and not be embarrassed. I really do, especially with an
- 45:27Speaker 1: interior guy, no doubt, no doubt. I agree. I think
- 45:32Speaker 1: I think guards and centers. I think it's a deep
- 45:35Speaker 1: guard draft. I think a lot of these tackles gonna
- 45:38Speaker 1: end up playing guard. And I think it's just a
- 45:41Speaker 1: very very deep draft to guard position. The Bengals can
- 45:43Speaker 1: do some damage in the rounds two and rounds four.
- 45:48Speaker 1: All right, I'm gonna crack a beer and put this
- 45:50Speaker 1: podcast together. You go to bed. We'll talk again tomorrow.
- 45:55Speaker 1: Sounds like I can play, my man. I'll tell you
- 45:57Speaker 1: i'd be I'd be a one bear and out guy
- 45:59Speaker 1: because I'm gonna be an out guy without hearing. We'll
- 46:05Speaker 1: have new episodes of a podcast posted as quickly as
- 46:08Speaker 1: possible after days two and three of the draft. That's
- 46:12Speaker 1: going to do it for this edition of the Bengals
