- 0:39SPEAKER_04: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talking Tech Podcast, powered by the Nation, part of the Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:44SPEAKER_04: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:47SPEAKER_03: Tristan, we're winners.
- 0:50SPEAKER_03: We have won a game, Steven! And on the Talking Tech Podcast, there's only one reasonable reaction to winning a football game.
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: And what is that?
- 1:01SPEAKER_03: We must play the song.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: You play the song.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: We play the song right now.
- 1:04SPEAKER_03: We're playing the song.
- 1:07SPEAKER_06: Red Raider coming at you.
- 1:09SPEAKER_06: Riding through the night.
- 1:11SPEAKER_06: With a fury of West Texas win.
- 1:15SPEAKER_06: Red Raider coming at you.
- 1:17SPEAKER_06: What a beautiful time.
- 1:19SPEAKER_06: The Texas Tech Red Raiders riding right again.
- 1:25SPEAKER_04: Red Raider coming at you.
- 1:28SPEAKER_03: Ride through the night.
- 1:31SPEAKER_03: Please tell me you're still using like the kind of crappy recording of that rather than the cool and crisp one.
- 1:36SPEAKER_04: That's like an Oh we don't need the cool, we don't need the cool and crisp one.
- 1:40SPEAKER_03: I kind of like the crappy, like really old recording of it.
- 1:44SPEAKER_04: Really old recording of Red Raider coming at you.
- 1:47SPEAKER_04: It's a classic.
- 1:48SPEAKER_04: It's I've been wanting to play it all year, and unfortunately, we had to wait till Tarleton State to play it.
- 1:54SPEAKER_04: But hey, we are winners.
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: Hey, you you get you get you get the monkey off your back.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: You beat in-state rival Tarleton State of Stephenville, Texas, and you are in business, baby.
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: I I feel so good that I'm drinking a beer for the first time while recording in I don't know how long.
- 2:12SPEAKER_03: Maybe that's been the issue.
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: I've been cursing Texas Tech by not indulging, but that's it's just I thought it was cost for celebration because uh that's all we that's all we can hope for right now.
- 2:21SPEAKER_04: It's your fault that we lost the first two games of the year, but we're back, baby.
- 2:26SPEAKER_03: Well, look, look, as a fan, all losses are my fault.
- 2:29SPEAKER_03: It's something I did that caused the loss.
- 2:31SPEAKER_03: Like I didn't wear the right underwear, didn't wear the right shirt.
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: Look, it's all your fault.
- 2:36SPEAKER_03: That's how it is.
- 2:37SPEAKER_04: Much like the Twitter community, it's all their, I mean, everything the Twitter community says is true.
- 2:45SPEAKER_04: And we have to listen to the coaches on Twitter on what quarterback needs to play.
- 2:53SPEAKER_03: Oh man, you're just really kicking the hive immediately, dude.
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: Like we're not even like basking in the wind for a second.
- 2:59SPEAKER_03: You're just like, all right, we're the Hornets.
- 3:01SPEAKER_03: Let's go find them.
- 3:01SPEAKER_03: We gotta shake them out of the tree right now.
- 3:04SPEAKER_04: I was upset.
- 3:05SPEAKER_04: We'll get to it, but I need to say my analogy first because we've been given analogies for everyone.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I know, right?
- 3:11SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 3:12SPEAKER_04: This game was like playing easy mode on Super Smash Bros classic mode when you're running through it, you're just playing easy mode, you're just getting maybe the feel of it back.
- 3:21SPEAKER_04: You're playing the movie.
- 3:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, you're learning the moveset, you're playing as Donkey Kong or something, except you got hit a couple times now, and uh you're kind of questioning if you chose the right character uh per se on your first run through, because you know you got a little a few unexpected jabs here and there from Captain Falcon and uh Link, and you're just wondering, should I have chosen Pikachu?
- 3:43SPEAKER_04: Maybe I should have gone with Mario.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: But yeah, you're trying to try to run through the whole thing with with five five lives on stock, and you'd be like, Well, you know, you actually lost one.
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: It might have been your fault, like you, you know, you missed timed the jump or something like that, but you're still gonna blame the the character.
- 3:57SPEAKER_04: You were trying to grab the bomb, and then as soon as you jumped to that platform, all of a sudden the bomb blows up, and there you go off screen.
- 4:04SPEAKER_03: So this is a fairly niche analogy.
- 4:08SPEAKER_04: It is the people will get it if they played OG Super Smash Bros or even Melee or anything like that.
- 4:13SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, I think they know all the the that mode.
- 4:15SPEAKER_04: I say this because we ran through Tarleton State, we won 41 to 3.
- 4:19SPEAKER_04: Okay, there was no problems.
- 4:21SPEAKER_04: We were never the game was never in doubt.
- 4:23SPEAKER_04: We played just fine defensively.
- 4:25SPEAKER_04: We were fantastic, and yet people are questioning if we're playing the right guy at the quarterback position, which to me now I was at a wedding on Saturday.
- 4:37SPEAKER_04: I did not get to watch the game live.
- 4:38SPEAKER_04: Not a real fan, not a real fan.
- 4:41SPEAKER_04: Fall weddings, stupid.
- 4:43SPEAKER_04: I will say it plenty of times.
- 4:44SPEAKER_04: Everybody is in agreement that fall weddings are dumb and you're taken away from football and it's ridiculous.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Jews from Texas are dumb.
- 4:52SPEAKER_04: But I did go back the next morning.
- 4:55SPEAKER_04: Thank you, ESPN Plus, for recording all these games, and I watched every series.
- 5:00SPEAKER_04: And I tell you what, it hits different when you're watching it not in real time and already knowing the score because you're way less critical, and you're also you analyze the game a little better and a little more less biased at that point.
- 5:13SPEAKER_04: And after reading through Twitter after I got home from the wedding, you would have thought the world was on fire and that our quarterback stinks and our coaching staff is full of idiots.
- 5:23SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 5:23SPEAKER_03: You you really got that impression?
- 5:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:26SPEAKER_03: I that was that bad.
- 5:28SPEAKER_03: I I I didn't think it was like, wow, this team's ass.
- 5:31SPEAKER_03: I I I'll just all I saw was like uh it wasn't the team.
- 5:34SPEAKER_03: No, no, no.
- 5:35SPEAKER_03: This is not the story.
- 5:37SPEAKER_04: This is strictly Tyler Shuck hate on Twitter.
- 5:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 5:40SPEAKER_04: This is this one that everybody was thrilled with the team and the performance.
- 5:44SPEAKER_04: And yet it's because we saw Baron Morton play, it's because he played well, and it's because Tyler Shuck threw a couple passes out of bounds that the people think that a quarterback change is necessary, and they took that from a game against an FCS opponent that we won 41 to 3, which I think is ridiculous.
- 6:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, I I I'm with you.
- 6:04SPEAKER_03: Uh, I never I never walked away from that game thinking that Baron Morton was uh our starting quarterback now.
- 6:09SPEAKER_03: I think a lot of people did.
- 6:10SPEAKER_03: I think a lot of people were like, wow, if that doesn't seal the deal, I don't know what does, but I am not in that camp.
- 6:15SPEAKER_03: And obviously the coaches aren't either.
- 6:17SPEAKER_03: It's already been announced that Talas Shuck will indeed start against the Mountaineers in Morgantown.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: Um, but no, I I I'm with you.
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: I I had some I had some serious mixed feelings.
- 6:25SPEAKER_03: I feel like we're actually and I are actually gonna go against the grain a bit with the fans and some of the listeners right now about uh our thoughts on it.
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: I'm not like hyper aggressive either way because I absolutely understand both sides of it.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: Um, but I am I'm still on the side of I'm just gonna trust the coaches with it.
- 6:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, I'm I'm in agreement with you.
- 6:45SPEAKER_04: I think they made this decision, not just because Tyler Shuck is a six-year senior, not just because this is his last year of eligibility.
- 6:52SPEAKER_04: They made this because they think he's the right guy and they have stuck to their guns, and I am fine with that because minus a few plays in the Oregon game, minus a few plays in the Wyoming game, I thought he played fine.
- 7:04SPEAKER_04: And yes, those mistakes are unforgivable.
- 7:07SPEAKER_04: Do I want to replay those games over potentially with Baron Morton playing the entire time?
- 7:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I do, because I would like to see if there is a difference between the two quarterbacks and if Barron Morton would have potentially won those games.
- 7:22SPEAKER_04: What I am not in agreement on is that it's a guarantee that Texas Tech would have played better with Barron Morton at quarterback in those games.
- 7:29SPEAKER_04: I just don't agree with that statement.
- 7:32SPEAKER_04: Um now I thought Baron Morton played fantastic against Tarleton State.
- 7:37SPEAKER_04: I thought he threw some dots.
- 7:39SPEAKER_04: He was great.
- 7:40SPEAKER_04: He was everything that we saw in the Oklahoma State game and the West Virginia game last year.
- 7:44SPEAKER_04: It was fantastic.
- 7:45SPEAKER_04: He played Tarleton State, guys.
- 7:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we cannot take yeah, and it was second half, they were already down 24-0, their team's defeated.
- 7:54SPEAKER_04: It's like, how are you gonna put so much stock in that second half to think that he has taken over the starting job with that performance?
- 8:02SPEAKER_04: It does it doesn't make any sense to me.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it just I wanted to see this.
- 8:06SPEAKER_03: I think as fans, you want to see this in an FCS game.
- 8:09SPEAKER_03: You want to see basically the second string get in there and get going in the second half.
- 8:13SPEAKER_03: That's exactly what happens.
- 8:15SPEAKER_03: Um, I I love our I love how passionate our fans are about are about it.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: I love that they love our dudes, I love that they they love the backup dude who's absolutely the future.
- 8:22SPEAKER_03: Um, what I don't did not love was the reaction from the fans about like benching Shuck for Baron Morton, you know, the shift.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: Like apparently the fans went crazy when Baron Morton went out there.
- 8:37SPEAKER_03: Uh, and while that's all cool and all, I mean, do you think that's some slat at Shuck, or do you think it's just excitement from the fans?
- 8:45SPEAKER_04: I think it's 50-50.
- 8:47SPEAKER_04: Like, I think they were legitimately excited to see Baron Morton because he is the West Texas son, like we always talk about.
- 8:55SPEAKER_04: He is the local product, he is the guy that is eventually going to lead Texas Tech at the quarterback position.
- 9:01SPEAKER_04: Some think he should lead now, some think he's gonna lead later.
- 9:05SPEAKER_04: Regardless, we're all excited to see Baron Morton play football.
- 9:08SPEAKER_04: And honestly, he's an extremely exciting quarterback to watch.
- 9:11SPEAKER_04: Oh, he's just on the field.
- 9:12SPEAKER_04: I mean, he's he's awesome, he gets the ball out quick, he seems to make great decisions, he can run, he throws bombs.
- 9:19SPEAKER_04: I mean, he was fantastic to watch.
- 9:22SPEAKER_04: So I do think the cheering was a little a majority that versus good that Tyler Shuck is out the game.
- 9:29SPEAKER_04: You know what I'm saying?
- 9:30SPEAKER_04: Like, yeah, there definitely were those people, and they were loud and proud on Twitter about how Tyler Shuck needs to never play it down for Texas Tech again.
- 9:39SPEAKER_04: But I I didn't really take that more of a slight to Shuck, more as a cheer for Morton.
- 9:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, that's that's that's what I'm gonna choose to accept uh as what happened as well.
- 9:50SPEAKER_03: Um, but man, it's just on on Twitter, shoot, dude, like the the absolute like full send, the full send to Baron Morton from everybody.
- 10:00SPEAKER_03: It was it's crazy, it was crazy to see.
- 10:03SPEAKER_03: Um, I I I don't know, perhaps perhaps everyone's just kind of you know enjoying themselves on a Saturday, having some fun on Twitter, but it was wild, like it was just like it was like a tidal wave of this is how it needs to be for the rest of the year kind of thing.
- 10:14SPEAKER_03: It was it was just it was the switch was crazy, yeah.
- 10:18SPEAKER_04: I think I'm just more sick of it because I we've seen this for seven years now, ever since Patrick Mahomes left.
- 10:26SPEAKER_04: It's not seven, but however many years it's been since Patrick Mahomes left.
- 10:30SPEAKER_04: There has been a portion of the fan base that has called for the backup quarterback every year, and it gets so annoying and so tiresome that every single year somebody is calling for they were doing this since Barron Morton was a true freshman.
- 10:48SPEAKER_04: They were saying throw him out there because this is who I want.
- 10:52SPEAKER_04: I want the backup because we're not winning games, throw out the backup guy, throw this, that it's so tired.
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: Best player on the team, baby, QB number two.
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: Just put him in there and everything will change.
- 11:06SPEAKER_03: It's not a Texas Tech thing.
- 11:07SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's uh we're we're we're lucky that um we have a quarterback room where we're that confident in saying that 100%.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: Like, I think we it is different for us in the sense that we just have a wildly talented quarterback room, and we have some absolute studs in there, man.
- 11:23SPEAKER_03: Um, but uh when it comes to this quarterback controversy, I really think the only controversy is the fans.
- 11:28SPEAKER_03: Like, as in we're just it's just with us.
- 11:30SPEAKER_03: I don't know, I don't know if the coaches feel that way yet.
- 11:33SPEAKER_03: Um, I think this upcoming weekend could probably tell us a lot about how we actually feel about the quarterback battle.
- 11:40SPEAKER_03: Um, because you know it's it's it's Big 12 game number one on the road.
- 11:44SPEAKER_03: And it's it's it's now it's quite seriously now or never, if you want to salvage the season, because we're about to exit out of the out of conference um slate one and two, which is an unmitigated disaster.
- 11:55SPEAKER_03: So if you're gonna if you're gonna ride the ship, we better get it, we better get a get it right now, and it's gotta be the captain behind the the line there.
- 12:02SPEAKER_03: So this weekend we'll say a lot, but I I do feel good that the qu the coaching staff still feels very confident in Tyler Shuck, at least audibly.
- 12:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I'm not saying my thoughts aren't gonna change.
- 12:13SPEAKER_03: Like yeah, I say, yeah, I'm not I'm not shuck when we die.
- 12:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, we could absolutely stink with Tyler Shuck this coming week, and yeah, we probably should put in Barron Morton, but I don't think that's gonna happen.
- 12:25SPEAKER_04: Like, I think we're gonna be fine with Tyler Shuck leading the way.
- 12:27SPEAKER_04: I think he's going to be, you know, show what he's made of, which we've seen at Texas Tech, which is he wins some games.
- 12:34SPEAKER_04: And yeah, it hasn't started off great this year, but I don't think that's an automatic go-to to put in the second string guy in the third game of the season.
- 12:42SPEAKER_04: And I don't think his lease should be particularly short, but I think it is shorter than at the beginning of the year.
- 12:49SPEAKER_04: For sure, yeah, as it should be, honestly.
- 12:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so I don't know.
- 12:54SPEAKER_04: Any any more thoughts on QB's going into West Virginia?
- 12:58SPEAKER_03: No, I'm should I'm sure that the listeners are have had their belly full of it.
- 13:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 13:04SPEAKER_04: Um defense played fantastic.
- 13:07SPEAKER_04: Exactly what's got exactly what you want to see against Charlton State.
- 13:11SPEAKER_04: There were a few big plays given up if you want to get nitpicky, but honestly, the turnovers were fantastic.
- 13:16SPEAKER_04: We really took advantage of some bad throws, straight up bad throws by that Tarleton quarterback, who I thought was okay.
- 13:24SPEAKER_04: He wasn't like awful, but those three turnovers were just there was nothing going on in his brain right there.
- 13:30SPEAKER_04: Um but you know, the pass rush was better in this game, which it should be.
- 13:36SPEAKER_04: You're playing Tarleton State, so you actually got a couple sacks on the board.
- 13:40SPEAKER_04: You were in the quarterback's grill for the majority of the game.
- 13:43SPEAKER_04: The linebackers played well, defensive backs played well, the defense as a whole, you held them to three points, you play very well.
- 13:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, you you spiritually shut them out.
- 13:52SPEAKER_03: It's not until the very end where they're able to get a field goal off.
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: And you feel you feel really good about that.
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: They did exactly what they needed to, and it was definitely the turnover defense that we were looking for in one guy in particular.
- 14:04SPEAKER_03: I mean, I don't know how we can talk about this game without the star being uh Malik Dunlap.
- 14:08SPEAKER_03: He is absolutely the MVP of this game, and he really led the defense uh to making that number three happen, uh that that just the three on the points on the board there.
- 14:16SPEAKER_03: So, dude, you really could not be happier.
- 14:19SPEAKER_03: And it not only that, man, like I I really think that a contributor to that defensive performance was dude, can you believe the turnout in the Jones?
- 14:28SPEAKER_03: I was so I was so impressed with our fans.
- 14:31SPEAKER_03: Uh, just getting out there, getting loud, packing the Jones.
- 14:34SPEAKER_03: I know it was a sellout, but I'll be honest, I really expected the Jones to be, you know, at most three-fourths quarter full.
- 14:42SPEAKER_03: You know, you're playing Tarleton State Saturday night, and you are 0-2.
- 14:47SPEAKER_03: I really expected a pretty weak showing, but my God, we were out in fourth.
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: And I obviously I think that helped the defense out a lot.
- 14:53SPEAKER_04: And I gotta give the students credit.
- 14:55SPEAKER_04: I I said last week that I didn't think the students were gonna show up to this game or they were gonna leave after the first quarter.
- 15:00SPEAKER_04: There were still students there in the berm, in the little where the Texas Tech logo is, and that's when you've overflowed the student section.
- 15:08SPEAKER_04: So, shout out to the students, that was great.
- 15:10SPEAKER_04: Shout out to the fans for going to this one.
- 15:12SPEAKER_04: Show up to all of them.
- 15:13SPEAKER_04: That it's a huge part.
- 15:14SPEAKER_04: We want to make this a home court advantage or a home field advantage, I should say, as much as possible.
- 15:19SPEAKER_04: And Texas Tech, we need to get it back to being one of the most difficult places to play as it was in the late 2000s.
- 15:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, I want people to keep saying that it gets weird in Lubbock, and it's we're I think we're trying to inch closer and closer back to being that terrifying place that no one wants to play.
- 15:35SPEAKER_03: We really used to have that reputation, it's it's rightfully died this past decade generally, but man, I I think I think we're going our way back with this fan support.
- 15:44SPEAKER_03: It's been amazing.
- 15:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 15:47SPEAKER_04: Um, to your other point about Malik Dunlap, it was interesting that uh Joey and DeRutter both brought up in the presser this week.
- 15:56SPEAKER_04: Malik Dunlap kind of missed a lot of fall ball, fall camp.
- 16:00SPEAKER_04: He was out with a couple injuries, and Braylon Lux kind of took over as that number two corner right next to Ray Shad Williams.
- 16:08SPEAKER_04: Now that Malik is back, he's kind of had that fire in him to get back and has that edge to really prove himself as a great cornerback on this team.
- 16:18SPEAKER_04: And I think the last several games for him have been just fantastic football.
- 16:24SPEAKER_04: He has been the most fun player to watch on defense.
- 16:28SPEAKER_04: Um, and I'm thrilled with him.
- 16:30SPEAKER_04: Rabbit as well had another turnover this game.
- 16:33SPEAKER_04: He's been great, uh, just hard hitting as ever.
- 16:36SPEAKER_04: And I can't say enough about those guys.
- 16:38SPEAKER_04: They're fantastic football players.
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they're back in full motion, man.
- 16:43SPEAKER_03: Like it any any any uh worried progress that would have been lost due to the lack of practice is just wiped clean in your brain because they were absolutely the stars of this game, without question.
- 16:53SPEAKER_03: I mean, and we we still haven't even talked about the rest of the offense.
- 16:56SPEAKER_03: We were just too focused on the uh the the uh the you know the big controversy.
- 17:00SPEAKER_03: But dude, you're you're absolutely right, and it's it's it's so great to see uh these guys still be stepping up big.
- 17:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I have one more thing on the defense before we talk about Tosh Brooks' big day and some of the other uh points we want to hit on.
- 17:15SPEAKER_04: But this pass rush, so Miles Cole showed what he can be on a couple plays, got a couple big sacks, one of which was on fourth down.
- 17:24SPEAKER_04: He's a massive human being.
- 17:26SPEAKER_04: We can all see he's six foot six, seems like three hundred and whatever pounds.
- 17:32SPEAKER_04: Uh I think he's like 280 or 290, but the wingspan, he looks like another, he looks like a clone of Tyree.
- 17:39SPEAKER_04: He does, I'm not saying uh just physically, just when you're looking at the person that is Miles Cole, he looks as big as Tyree Wilson, if not a little bit bigger.
- 17:47SPEAKER_04: And so you wish that kind of would have shown up in the Oregon or the Wyoming games, but it finally came out here.
- 17:53SPEAKER_04: But the pass risk unit as a whole uh has been subpar, especially from expectations given by the coaching staff at the beginning of this season.
- 18:03SPEAKER_04: And it was interesting that Joey personally called out Steve Linton in the uh presser this week, uh basically saying we need to get production from him.
- 18:14SPEAKER_04: I mean, we have put a lot of time and effort into uh trying to replace Tyree Wilson, and we know Steve has it in him, but he's just not producing the way we need him to for this to be successful.
- 18:28SPEAKER_04: And there's been some mental errors on his part.
- 18:31SPEAKER_04: They called out a few more things.
- 18:33SPEAKER_04: It wasn't like a call out, like, hey, he needs to be better, he's benched.
- 18:36SPEAKER_04: It's more of a motivational, hey, we need you, dude.
- 18:39SPEAKER_04: Like, we need you to step up now that we're going into Big 12 play.
- 18:43SPEAKER_04: And I can't second that anymore because we need Steve Linton and Miles Cole to be enforcers on that D line.
- 18:51SPEAKER_04: And they have not been to start off the year, but they have the chance to be.
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: So it sounds like you're in full endorsement of the coaching calling out in the press technique.
- 18:59SPEAKER_04: I like it.
- 19:00SPEAKER_04: I like it.
- 19:01SPEAKER_04: I it's not it's not in a bad way, it's not like I said, he's not you know calling him out saying he's played bad football and he should feel bad.
- 19:09SPEAKER_04: Hang up the cleats, retire now, bozo.
- 19:13SPEAKER_04: He's not saying that.
- 19:14SPEAKER_04: He's he's just given a little extra motivation in the press conference to for him to do better, and that's what a coach should do.
- 19:21SPEAKER_04: And he, you know, he's behind the scenes, they're doing the right thing and they're saying the right thing as well.
- 19:25SPEAKER_04: So I just want to see more.
- 19:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I mean, if anything, it doesn't have to be seen as a is like uh, you know, we're just pushing him to be better.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: It's also, you know, uh acknowledging your confidence in the player as well, that you do expect more out of him and know that he can do more too.
- 19:39SPEAKER_03: So that that's that's also what it says at the end of the day.
- 19:41SPEAKER_03: So you're you're it's still support beyond the player, but you're absolutely right.
- 19:44SPEAKER_03: The pass rush has indeed been uh less than satisfactory, like you said, due to the hype that they're running into with.
- 19:51SPEAKER_03: I mean, I'm glad we had a game like this.
- 19:53SPEAKER_03: You know, you almost wish that we opened up the season against Harleton rather than you know it being game number three.
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: So I I kind of hate that we have a tune-up game.
- 20:03SPEAKER_03: It's nice to have the tune-up game before we start Big 12 play, but shoot, man, like it seems like a lot of guys are getting right in this game, acting as they should on the field.
- 20:10SPEAKER_03: And you just wish that perhaps you started with this kind of competition at the very beginning to kind of get the the the wheels in motion, and maybe things would look differently.
- 20:17SPEAKER_03: I know that's like super theoretical Monday quarterbacking sort of uh talk there, but you just it just helps me.
- 20:23SPEAKER_03: You can't just can't can't help but wonder about it.
- 20:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, opening up on the road against Wyoming and then going and playing a top 10 team in the country is a tough opening to the year, and you know, you hate to be one and two, but you do understand that these were tough games and they were challenges, and we didn't pass them, but um, you know, you can you can look back at it, I think, if you have a good finish to this year.
- 20:46SPEAKER_03: Oh, for sure.
- 20:48SPEAKER_04: I you know, I was watching the pass rush for a lot of this, and I was going back and I was uh replaying and doing all that stuff.
- 20:55SPEAKER_04: I saw number 19 on the pass rush, and I was like, did Tyree come back?
- 20:59SPEAKER_04: What's going on?
- 21:00SPEAKER_04: Who's number 19?
- 21:01SPEAKER_04: And he's massive, another big dude coming off the edge, number 19.
- 21:06SPEAKER_04: I was like, Who is this guy?
- 21:08SPEAKER_04: It's Dylan Spencer, true freshman, the recruit.
- 21:12SPEAKER_04: I don't know if you remember this, but he was the recruit that we beat Texas out for uh on this edge.
- 21:18SPEAKER_04: They played him a lot in this game, and they mentioned him in the presser plenty of times on a dude who's going to get more and more snaps.
- 21:25SPEAKER_04: He played great.
- 21:26SPEAKER_04: So true freshman?
- 21:28SPEAKER_04: True freshman.
- 21:29SPEAKER_04: My lord on the edge, and now you lost Isaac Smith, uh player you were expecting to have uh as a part of that depth on the edge rushing outside linebacker unit.
- 21:39SPEAKER_04: But now you're gonna kind of maybe have to play this guy because one, he may be too good to keep on the bench, and two, you may have to to get some of these guys some extra rest.
- 21:50SPEAKER_04: So I was thrilled.
- 21:52SPEAKER_04: He stood out to me.
- 21:53SPEAKER_04: I thought Dylan Spencer played fantastic.
- 21:55SPEAKER_03: Incredible effort, man.
- 21:57SPEAKER_03: Uh, it's it's great, it's crazy to see a guy that young be in a position.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: Like that immediately.
- 22:01SPEAKER_03: So I'm glad I'm glad we have a dude that could that can step up like that.
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: You know, it's just it's it's I feel like our biggest issue on that side of the ball is definitely our depth, like you mentioned.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: So you get scared, you get scared, but I'm glad to see that you know we're getting that experience under the belt, having games like that to really hopefully gain his confidence and move forward.
- 22:17SPEAKER_03: So shoot, dude.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: I would I would love to have a four-year starter out of a guy like him.
- 22:21SPEAKER_03: So that just that that would mean nothing but good things for the most part.
- 22:24SPEAKER_03: So, dude, that's awesome.
- 22:26SPEAKER_03: Good for him.
- 22:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 22:28SPEAKER_04: Taj Brooks had a great day.
- 22:30SPEAKER_04: How about you?
- 22:31SPEAKER_04: Agreed.
- 22:32SPEAKER_04: You run the ball with one of your best players, one of the best running backs in the Big 12.
- 22:37SPEAKER_04: Good things happen.
- 22:38SPEAKER_04: That's there's no way what I took from this.
- 22:41SPEAKER_04: What I took from this, Taj Brooks needs to get 12 to 15 carries minimum every single game.
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: Is Taj Brooks a good football player?
- 22:53SPEAKER_04: Good football player.
- 22:54SPEAKER_04: I'll say it.
- 22:55SPEAKER_04: Taj Brooks.
- 22:57SPEAKER_03: Dude, I think we're all so excited to see him hand the ball off to him so often this game.
- 23:02SPEAKER_03: It was it just it just frustrates you so freaking much.
- 23:06SPEAKER_03: He's so good.
- 23:07SPEAKER_03: And it's why were we not handing him the ball more?
- 23:10SPEAKER_03: Look, I know I know Kitley prefers the uh the the attack system via the air, but dude, like he is just way too good of a player to keep you know out of the uh offensive picture.
- 23:21SPEAKER_03: So it's just it's so frustrating, but man, it's so it's it's so fun to watch him just barrel his way through because man, can he do it?
- 23:28SPEAKER_04: It seems like he gets three to four yards every single time, even if he has a guy meet him at the line of scrimmage or even behind the line of scrimmage, he is managing to pull and carry forward for positive yardage, and it's really a good sight to see.
- 23:42SPEAKER_04: I love Taj Brooks, love him so much.
- 23:44SPEAKER_03: You're you're a Taj Brooks believer.
- 23:46SPEAKER_04: I've always been a Tosh believer, always been a Taj Brooks believer.
- 23:49SPEAKER_04: I was a big fan of Sir Roderick Thompson, too.
- 23:51SPEAKER_04: I think we've just had a great like under the radar all-time running backs at Texas Tech here these last couple years.
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: We've had running backs that we quite frankly, quite frankly, don't deserve.
- 24:02SPEAKER_03: Honestly, yeah, yeah, honestly.
- 24:04SPEAKER_04: Those guys, I really, really nice.
- 24:07SPEAKER_04: Nehemiah Martinez played a couple snaps at running back.
- 24:10SPEAKER_04: That was weird.
- 24:11SPEAKER_04: What was we that about?
- 24:13SPEAKER_04: Uh, Cameron Valdez is hurt, or he's been hurt the last couple weeks.
- 24:16SPEAKER_04: He's got a shoulder thing.
- 24:18SPEAKER_04: He's gonna be back for West Virginia, but um, yeah, they just the thing is, and I think Kiddley's kind of had this mindset for since he's gotten to Texas Tech.
- 24:27SPEAKER_04: If you have a playmaker, you gotta play him.
- 24:30SPEAKER_04: No matter what position he's on the field, if it's on special teams, if it's on running back, wide receiver, whatever, you got to play him.
- 24:38SPEAKER_04: That was their mentality last year with the quarterback whole whole thing.
- 24:42SPEAKER_04: You got three good quarterbacks, you want to play them all.
- 24:44SPEAKER_04: This is a better situation because this is a wide receiver turn running back.
- 24:48SPEAKER_04: They're a little more interchangeable than you know, you can only play one quarterback at a time.
- 24:52SPEAKER_03: But no, kicker and O-line man.
- 24:54SPEAKER_04: You know, it's tough to play kicker at O-line, it's tough to play an O-line.
- 24:58SPEAKER_03: Maybe he's a playmaker.
- 24:59SPEAKER_04: I mean, it you know, I that may be the uh the one caveat here, but no, Nehemiah's a baller and he needs to get on the field.
- 25:08SPEAKER_04: We have a very deep wide receiver room, so it's understandable that he's not getting the snaps that he maybe deserves.
- 25:14SPEAKER_04: So throw him in at running back, and he played fine.
- 25:17SPEAKER_04: I thought it was great.
- 25:18SPEAKER_04: He's he's not gonna have to do that from now on as long as Cameron stays healthy.
- 25:22SPEAKER_04: I think Cameron's still your number two, but it was nice to see Nehemiah do more than just play wide receiver.
- 25:28SPEAKER_03: Steven, I am a proud subscriber to putting your best players on the field as much as you can.
- 25:36SPEAKER_03: I know that's a hot take.
- 25:38SPEAKER_03: Perhaps a new school of thinking in sports could be, but I am on board with it.
- 25:43SPEAKER_03: So I don't care if you want to get weird, especially in a game like this.
- 25:46SPEAKER_03: If you want to just feel it out and see how it looks real time, I think it's a great idea.
- 25:50SPEAKER_03: Like, why the heck not?
- 25:51SPEAKER_03: You're I mean, you're crushing them.
- 25:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 25:55SPEAKER_04: But let's talk about that O-line.
- 25:58SPEAKER_04: Let's talk about that O-line.
- 26:01SPEAKER_04: Not my favorite position group this year.
- 26:04SPEAKER_04: No, and I don't think it's I don't think it's anybody's favorite position group this year.
- 26:09SPEAKER_04: Very disappointing from what I expected, especially from the guys that I did not expect to be the issues.
- 26:16SPEAKER_04: Um Cole Spencer and Rusty Stotz, now transfers.
- 26:24SPEAKER_04: They haven't played at the power five level before this year.
- 26:28SPEAKER_04: They were at Western Kentucky before this, which ran a great offense and had some great seasons in an awesome Kidley offense.
- 26:36SPEAKER_04: But these two have not played up to par.
- 26:40SPEAKER_04: Now, I think Statz had a good game against Tarleton, but he definitely made mistakes in Wyoming and Oregon, and you kind of saw him struggle a good amount.
- 26:48SPEAKER_04: Cole Spencer's another guy, hurt for the whole year, hasn't played football.
- 26:53SPEAKER_04: I understand that, but he's one of those guys that you really expected to be a reliable option there at your left guard, and he is not really played up to standard along with the left tackle Monroe Mills.
- 27:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm I'm not gonna lie to you.
- 27:07SPEAKER_03: The that that first drive was pretty uh uh uh Pepto inducing.
- 27:11SPEAKER_03: I don't know if you saw that if you remember it, where uh you know we we started with the ball and we get sacked like immediately.
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: And it's look, I I know I know Tarleton probably has some good athletes, and I know I know people will just sit there and kind of laugh at the FCSL.
- 27:24SPEAKER_03: It's still D1, they're still good enough to to uh get looks and get a scholarship, but you cannot be getting pulled apart, pushed around by Tarleton State, and especially on the first drive like that.
- 27:35SPEAKER_03: I get it if you're tired, but not not drive one, dude.
- 27:39SPEAKER_03: Like that's just it's it's been really frustrating to watch, especially over we we appear to be having some slight quarterback issues, you know, whenever it comes to uh decision making and such that you know, and the O line obviously doesn't help that out.
- 27:52SPEAKER_03: Um, so it's just it's it's quite um heartburn inducing to to see this re-occur.
- 27:58SPEAKER_03: Like how you feel you just feel like there's not any progress being made.
- 28:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt.
- 28:02SPEAKER_04: I and just I'm concerned.
- 28:04SPEAKER_04: I'm already not a huge believer in like Caleb Rogers.
- 28:08SPEAKER_04: You know, he's he's always had his uh tough moments here at Texas Tech.
- 28:12SPEAKER_04: Monroe Mills has had a really bad start to the year at left tackle, and he's that's the most important position on the on the offensive line there.
- 28:20SPEAKER_04: And he's just it hasn't been great to start off.
- 28:23SPEAKER_04: He hasn't been horrible, but he also hasn't been good, you know.
- 28:28SPEAKER_04: So there were a lot of penalties in those first two games.
- 28:30SPEAKER_04: I'll give them credit.
- 28:31SPEAKER_04: They no penalty.
- 28:32SPEAKER_04: I mean, we had two penalties this game, and I think they were at the very end of the at the end of it, but just yeah, a very concerning position for me moving forward.
- 28:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's probably the most concerning group on the field.
- 28:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah, which I did not expect that to be the most concerning group on the field.
- 28:50SPEAKER_03: But the veterans see, it's just it that's what's that's probably the most frustrating part, is just you have veterans who have what they everyone, I feel like every commentator always brings it up every game.
- 28:58SPEAKER_03: It's like these guys have a command 200 starts or something like that.
- 29:01SPEAKER_03: And it's just dude, uh, it doesn't look like it.
- 29:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's yeah, it's an adjustment.
- 29:08SPEAKER_04: I'm hoping this is something that they get figured out here pretty quickly.
- 29:11SPEAKER_04: Kidley did mention that he thinks they have improved from game one to game three, which I is a good sign, but again, you different caliber of opponents, it's kind of hard to judge.
- 29:20SPEAKER_04: So uh West Virginia will tell us a lot, Houston will tell us a lot better with all the slot about uh where this O line is and where they could be.
- 29:27SPEAKER_04: So anything else Carleton related?
- 29:30SPEAKER_03: No, in in the first matchup between these two proud programs, we came out on top big, they're gonna remember that.
- 29:37SPEAKER_03: And no, but dude, it's it was everything you wanted it to be.
- 29:40SPEAKER_03: That's and that's that's a good thing.
- 29:42SPEAKER_03: Like it was a really boring game in a great way.
- 29:45SPEAKER_03: Like I like I had no issues flipping to other Big 12 games during our game every once in a while just to see what was happening, just because I knew it was like guys, this is this is wrapped up, we're creaming them, no worries.
- 29:54SPEAKER_03: Um, and uh, so that's that's exactly what you want.
- 29:57SPEAKER_03: You you want to be bored in those games in a good way, because we have been not um unbored in those games before, so in a horrible way, not that long ago.
- 30:06SPEAKER_03: So I'm glad to see that we are still pounding the pounding them into dust.
- 30:11SPEAKER_04: Yes, we did struggle under Matt Wells.
- 30:14SPEAKER_04: You know who didn't struggle under Matt Wells.
- 30:18SPEAKER_04: Say it.
- 30:21SPEAKER_04: West Virginia, the only Big 12 team to never beat uh Matt Wells coach Texas Tech Team.
- 30:30SPEAKER_03: Hey, that's hey, that that that's not a knock on them, okay?
- 30:33SPEAKER_04: That is a that's a major that's a major knock on them.
- 30:38SPEAKER_03: That is a tough staff to outwit, sir.
- 30:42SPEAKER_03: Tremendous, tremendous.
- 30:45SPEAKER_04: Oh though going back to those West Virginia games.
- 30:48SPEAKER_04: Do you remember starting Henry Columbi?
- 30:51SPEAKER_04: I think we titled that episode after that game Hollywood Henry or Columbia Magic or something like that, thinking he was gonna be a consistent good quarterback.
- 31:02SPEAKER_04: I don't think we ever said that, bro.
- 31:04SPEAKER_04: I don't think we ever we were never that full sinned we were never we were never full send into Columbia, but we definitely were like, okay, this can be okay.
- 31:15SPEAKER_04: And it was never after that okay.
- 31:18SPEAKER_03: Look, I I think we were like, this is okay, this is gonna be okay in the sense that Columbia, I think, was always gonna be able to just like pull you along.
- 31:26SPEAKER_03: He was never ever gonna be a guy that was like a star.
- 31:29SPEAKER_03: Like we always thought, like, okay, I think he's good enough to not screw up.
- 31:32SPEAKER_03: I think that was like always our mentality, and he screwed up.
- 31:35SPEAKER_03: Oh, he did, he did.
- 31:37SPEAKER_04: He did, he screwed up a few times.
- 31:38SPEAKER_04: Um, also, known beater of Notre Dame, Henry Columbi.
- 31:43SPEAKER_03: Hey, hey, he's he's he has chosen his final uh allegiance, his profile pick is still him tech in a uniform.
- 31:51SPEAKER_04: Wreck him, wreck him till you die.
- 31:53SPEAKER_04: Unblock us, Henry.
- 31:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, please.
- 31:55SPEAKER_03: Oh, I forgot.
- 31:56SPEAKER_03: Is he the only player that has us blocked?
- 31:58SPEAKER_04: Uh Davion Harman also has us blocked.
- 32:00SPEAKER_03: Uh what?
- 32:01SPEAKER_03: Why?
- 32:02SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 32:03SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 32:05SPEAKER_04: I've never, I've never once tagged him in a tweet.
- 32:08SPEAKER_04: We don't tag any once.
- 32:10SPEAKER_04: We don't tag the players, we don't do that.
- 32:12SPEAKER_04: That's not a thing we do for tweets.
- 32:15SPEAKER_04: We never tagged him on anything.
- 32:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I was probably upset after Texas Tech Basketball underperformed last year, and Davion Harman probably saw that and searched names and you know something for motivation and decided to block us.
- 32:29SPEAKER_04: So Davion Harman, Henry Columbi.
- 32:33SPEAKER_04: That's our two.
- 32:34SPEAKER_04: That's our two big ones.
- 32:36SPEAKER_03: All right, but Steven, it is John Denver week, bro.
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: So you know where John Dimmer went to school?
- 32:44SPEAKER_03: Lubbock High.
- 32:46SPEAKER_03: Lubbock High School, baby.
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: That's where John.
- 32:49SPEAKER_03: No, he's he's I think he's from like New Mexico.
- 32:51SPEAKER_03: No, I think he's from New Mexico.
- 32:52SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 32:53SPEAKER_03: Well, he went to Texas Tech.
- 32:55SPEAKER_04: I know he went to Texas Tech.
- 32:56SPEAKER_03: Yes, he went to Texas Tech, and we are pod number 25 to say that, I'm sure.
- 33:01SPEAKER_03: Um, but you know who watched podcasts are not saying that?
- 33:05SPEAKER_03: West Virginia pods.
- 33:07SPEAKER_03: And they must be reminded.
- 33:08SPEAKER_03: And Steven, do you know do you know what feels good?
- 33:11SPEAKER_03: What feels good?
- 33:12SPEAKER_03: I think West Virginia is the one school on the planet that we have their number.
- 33:19SPEAKER_03: That is unreal.
- 33:21SPEAKER_03: I don't understand it.
- 33:22SPEAKER_03: Um we are on a four-game winning streak, which is dominance for us, okay?
- 33:26SPEAKER_03: That is we never do that to teams.
- 33:29SPEAKER_03: I I think that's probably our longest active one because I think you know, because I think Kansas beat us the year we beat West Virginia as well.
- 33:36SPEAKER_03: So yeah, that's yeah, I'll keep I'll keep talking forward there.
- 33:41SPEAKER_03: I'll keep moving on that.
- 33:43SPEAKER_03: Um but dude, you you and I well, whenever we were in school, we never beat West Virginia.
- 33:48SPEAKER_04: Well, granted, we never beat anybody, but we don't get yeah, we didn't get we didn't get a lot of good when we were in school.
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: We didn't beat anybody, we didn't beat a lot of teams at all in a joke.
- 33:59SPEAKER_03: So, but no, that this we I don't know.
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: This is like the one time we actually get to see here and go, wow, I I don't know how we keep doing it, but we do.
- 34:07SPEAKER_03: And the last time we played them, dude, we killed them, we annihilated them.
- 34:12SPEAKER_03: Barron Morton 48 to 10.
- 34:14SPEAKER_04: Barron Morton starting that whole time.
- 34:16SPEAKER_04: It was funny.
- 34:16SPEAKER_04: I listened, I listened to Neil Brown's presser this week.
- 34:20SPEAKER_04: First off, guy reminds me spookily of Chris Beard in his press conferences, and I didn't he looks like him, I didn't enjoy.
- 34:28SPEAKER_04: He talks like him.
- 34:29SPEAKER_03: Same mannerisms.
- 34:31SPEAKER_04: The mannerisms are the same, they're so sure of themselves, which is insane for the position that Neil Brown is in to be so sure of himself in these press conferences.
- 34:41SPEAKER_04: But I didn't enjoy it, I'm not gonna lie.
- 34:43SPEAKER_04: He like gave out a weekly awards, I guess, that he wanted to give to the media on players that are playing well in practice and stuff, and it's like, okay, a little a little middle schoolish, but you know, go go off, King.
- 34:57SPEAKER_04: Go off, king.
- 34:58SPEAKER_03: Go off, go off, king.
- 34:59SPEAKER_03: Trust the climb, baby.
- 35:00SPEAKER_04: Trust the climb, but um no, yeah.
- 35:03SPEAKER_03: I don't I love that comparison because you just look at them, they're they're both so glossy.
- 35:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they are so like their faces are so glossy, they're so red and glossy.
- 35:13SPEAKER_03: They're like, they're like a they're like you're like in a grocery store, you're in the beautiful produce section of HEB, and they got the mistress on the uh the tomatoes, yeah, and they're like a nicely missed tomato.
- 35:24SPEAKER_03: You know, that's what they look like.
- 35:25SPEAKER_03: They look like an HEB missted tomato.
- 35:27SPEAKER_04: He sprayed himself with a little mist before hopping on and talking about uh his his practice squad offensive player of the week, which was they they they they they look like it is 20 degrees hotter for them than anyone else in the whole room.
- 35:46SPEAKER_04: It's true, it's so weird.
- 35:48SPEAKER_04: I I had no I was not thinking at all about Chris Beard when I was watching this thing, and all I could see was Chris Beard.
- 35:54SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, I don't like this.
- 35:56SPEAKER_03: Rent free, Steven.
- 35:57SPEAKER_03: He lives rent-free in your head.
- 35:59SPEAKER_04: Not trusting the climb here after that press conference, but no day before I I trusted the climb against Penn State, it didn't work out for me.
- 36:13SPEAKER_04: Let's West Virginia two and one, better record than us.
- 36:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's true.
- 36:17SPEAKER_04: Coming off a win against Pitt, their biggest rival.
- 36:21SPEAKER_04: I have decided Pitt is bad, like bad, bad.
- 36:25SPEAKER_04: They're really bad this year, and it's yeah, they're I watched I watched a condensed version of that West Virginia Pitt game, and they are bad, bad.
- 36:36SPEAKER_04: So I'm not taking much from it.
- 36:38SPEAKER_04: I know it's a rivalry game, everybody plays a little up, but I still did not come out of that game thinking West Virginia is a good football team or even an average football team, to be quite honest with you.
- 36:50SPEAKER_04: So that's where I wanted to start here.
- 36:53SPEAKER_04: Not a not a climb trust.
- 36:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, absolutely, man.
- 36:56SPEAKER_03: Can you believe that Neil Brown was hired the same year as Matt Wells?
- 37:01SPEAKER_03: Yikes.
- 37:02SPEAKER_03: That uh it's just it's crazy because I remember so vividly that class because like the it felt like the whole Big 12 was hitting the reset button because everyone was getting new coaches, and everyone was saying about how Neil Brown was the guy, and like he was the he was the hire of that class.
- 37:20SPEAKER_03: No one was saying Matt Wells was the higher, unfortunately.
- 37:23SPEAKER_03: But Matt Wells took that personally because he never let Neil Brown beat him.
- 37:27SPEAKER_03: But um it's just crazy that he's still around.
- 37:30SPEAKER_03: I guess West Virginia still listened to listen to the media because um that was also the same year that Climate was hired, and that guy's the a man, he's the he's a stud.
- 37:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and uh and then they went in and that re-signed Neil Brown and everything.
- 37:41SPEAKER_03: I uh all that, all that aside, I do think that this is it's gonna still be kind of a scary game.
- 37:49SPEAKER_03: I I think we're going to win, but I'm way more nervous than I should be.
- 37:53SPEAKER_03: A lot of that has to hinge on the our record now.
- 37:57SPEAKER_03: Like we we just have not gotten it done when we've been really tested, and we're about to be tested again.
- 38:02SPEAKER_03: And we are 0-2 win tested.
- 38:05SPEAKER_03: But it also makes me extra nervous because Neil Brown is in pure survival mode.
- 38:09SPEAKER_03: I think he bought some goodwill whenever uh he uh uh beat Pitt, their biggest rival.
- 38:14SPEAKER_03: Obviously, I think if he they he if they lost that game, I don't well, I don't know.
- 38:18SPEAKER_03: I don't know if he's around for him any more games, but might have been game mode.
- 38:22SPEAKER_03: And they probably want to start 1-0 as much as we do in the Big 12 because they have a lot a lot of people pooping on them.
- 38:28SPEAKER_03: Well, you know, our hype is you know kind of crashed and burned a little bit, but um, I'm nervous, man.
- 38:33SPEAKER_03: I don't think this is a West Virginia team to just be trifled with, though.
- 38:36SPEAKER_03: I don't I don't think you trifle around.
- 38:38SPEAKER_03: I think I don't think I don't think you do much trifling whenever you're in Mount Morgantown this Saturday.
- 38:42SPEAKER_03: I think it should be a trifle free zone.
- 38:45SPEAKER_04: Do you want to know Joey McGuire's record on the road as the Texas Tech head football team?
- 38:50SPEAKER_03: I don't think I do want to know that record, sir.
- 38:54SPEAKER_03: One in five.
- 38:56SPEAKER_03: One in five.
- 38:57SPEAKER_04: What's the one?
- 38:59SPEAKER_04: Uh Iowa State last year.
- 39:01SPEAKER_04: Okay, and that was it.
- 39:02SPEAKER_04: That was a rock fight.
- 39:03SPEAKER_04: It was a rock fight.
- 39:04SPEAKER_04: It was cold as hell, and we pulled it out.
- 39:06SPEAKER_04: I think it was like 14 to 7.
- 39:08SPEAKER_04: But no, you lost to TCU last year, granted, good football team in Fort Worth.
- 39:14SPEAKER_04: You lost to Oklahoma State, granted, good football team on the road.
- 39:19SPEAKER_04: You lost to Kansas State, won the Big 12 on the road.
- 39:23SPEAKER_04: You lost to NC State on the road, decent football team for the first half of the year until Leary got hurt, and you lost to Wyoming this year.
- 39:32SPEAKER_04: That's your five losses.
- 39:33SPEAKER_04: Your one win was in Ames last season.
- 39:36SPEAKER_04: So this team clearly has struggled on the road with Joey McGuire.
- 39:42SPEAKER_04: Now, do I think that's a testament to Joey?
- 39:45SPEAKER_04: Not necessarily.
- 39:46SPEAKER_04: You played some really good teams on the road last year to get that record as bad as it was.
- 39:51SPEAKER_04: You should have beat Wyoming, you know.
- 39:54SPEAKER_04: Uh, there's no getting around that.
- 39:56SPEAKER_04: So this is a test for Joey.
- 39:59SPEAKER_04: You need to win these road games against teams you should beat.
- 40:03SPEAKER_04: You do.
- 40:03SPEAKER_04: You did it with Iowa State.
- 40:05SPEAKER_04: I'm not saying we should have beat any of those teams that we had on the schedule last year on the road, but you should have beat Wyoming.
- 40:11SPEAKER_04: And right now, you really need this one if you're Joey McGuire.
- 40:14SPEAKER_04: You need to prove to the football team, to your staff, to yourself that you can win on the road.
- 40:21SPEAKER_04: And that this has been kind of the one gripe I have with Joey is that he has not been able to do that yet.
- 40:28SPEAKER_03: That that's a that's a great point, man.
- 40:30SPEAKER_03: And additionally to that, is you have been served up a softball first half of the Big 12 lineup here.
- 40:38SPEAKER_03: Like it doesn't get any easier than this opening lineup, especially with the way the this year is unfolding.
- 40:43SPEAKER_03: Yep, you have to win these games.
- 40:46SPEAKER_03: If there is even still a dream of Arlington, uh, you you this it has to start Saturday.
- 40:53SPEAKER_04: If there's a dream of an eight-win season or a seven-win season or a bowl, you know, like you need to beat West Virginia and Baylor on the road these next three weeks.
- 41:03SPEAKER_04: You do.
- 41:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 41:05SPEAKER_03: That's and that's where I was going with that.
- 41:06SPEAKER_03: Like, uh, not even not even just the dream for Arlington, which let's let's be honest with ourselves.
- 41:12SPEAKER_03: I think with the way the year has started, I think most fans aren't really thinking like that anymore.
- 41:17SPEAKER_04: No, they probably shouldn't.
- 41:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and even just even just meeting the equidistance of last year, even just matching that record, which we all kind of expected to be at least the minimum, you have to win these games.
- 41:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there's no you've you've already you've you've dropped two already.
- 41:39SPEAKER_03: You dropped one that should have been a win, and this is also on the schedule as a should have been the win.
- 41:43SPEAKER_03: So it's just it's you cannot afford a loss in Morgantown.
- 41:48SPEAKER_03: I think I'm not a guy that says this very often, but this is a must-win.
- 41:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 41:54SPEAKER_04: I you know, I I'm never one to say it's a must-win so early in the season because you can always turn it around, and college football is wacky like that, where you're you can go and beat Alabama and then play a close one to Wyoming, adding the Longhorns.
- 42:08SPEAKER_04: Uh, you could beat Texas Tech and play a close one to Wyoming and then play a really good game against the top 10 team in the country in Oregon.
- 42:16SPEAKER_04: So college football is weird.
- 42:18SPEAKER_04: We all should realize that.
- 42:19SPEAKER_04: I don't think this is a must-win, but this is a win if you want to have a potential turnaround for this season.
- 42:28SPEAKER_03: Like so, is that not a must-win then?
- 42:30SPEAKER_04: Not a must-win because I think you can still win seven, eight games without this game because college football is weird.
- 42:37SPEAKER_04: But man, this would be so much better if you won this one.
- 42:40SPEAKER_04: You get some confidence on the road, you're coming back home, you're playing another very mad team.
- 42:47SPEAKER_04: I mean, I this is this is one you do need, but I'm not gonna say it's this is one this is one you really want, but it's not a must-win.
- 42:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yes, you can mathematically salvage an eight-win team, but realistically, you probably don't if you lose this game.
- 43:06SPEAKER_03: You are then one and three.
- 43:08SPEAKER_03: Like you are, you have a even deeper hole to climb out of, and you're already in a pretty deep hole.
- 43:14SPEAKER_04: I yeah, I don't want to think about this game.
- 43:17SPEAKER_04: This, yeah, that that makes me sad thinking about losing to West Virginia because this is clearly an inferior team to Texas Tech on paper.
- 43:26SPEAKER_04: I this West Virginia also potentially playing their backup quarterback.
- 43:31SPEAKER_04: Garrett Green got hurt in early on in the pit game.
- 43:33SPEAKER_04: They played their backup for I think like three quarters at least of that pit game.
- 43:38SPEAKER_04: So you're potentially playing a backup quarterback, you're playing the team that was picked dead last in the Big 12 preseason poll.
- 43:45SPEAKER_04: You're playing Neil Brown.
- 43:47SPEAKER_04: You need to win this one in Morgantown.
- 43:50SPEAKER_03: This is a yeah, you need it.
- 43:52SPEAKER_03: Say it, Steven.
- 43:53SPEAKER_03: No, you're allowed to say it.
- 43:55SPEAKER_04: Not gonna say it.
- 43:56SPEAKER_03: It's not like if we lose this, I'm turning off the TV.
- 43:59SPEAKER_03: I'm just saying if we lose this all of the hype all of the hope of the preseason is lit on fire it's gone yeah it's almost already there it almost ended with Wyoming to be honest I I get I get that but even even I I always said this season if we match last year I am happy and if we do not win in Morgantown I don't think that happens yeah I don't know I'm not gonna say it but I'm not turning off the TV and I'm still going to I'm just saying I know I West Virginia let's actually talk football here they run the ball they have three solid running backs including CJ Donaldson who's probably one of the best in the Big 12 they are going to run the ball especially if this backup quarterback is playing you don't quite have that same scariness if Garrett Green were out there and he has the potential he's got the run ability himself not that this quarterback can't take off when he needs to but he's just not as dynamic as Garrett Green and just clearly not as good.
- 45:02SPEAKER_04: So take advantage of that you need to stop the run early that's how you're gonna get them to punt that's how your offense I think is going to do just fine but against this West Virginia defense the only notable real notable parts about this West Virginia team are the offensive line and the running back unit because that offensive line probably one of the best in the Big 12 actually they are experienced they are a solid group there's not a lot of holes in that offensive line and then the running backs I already mentioned they're all very solid to very good so you got one part of this team that's good.
- 45:37SPEAKER_04: You need to stop it.
- 45:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah and that should make the game plan pretty easy right um the old uh make the quarterback beat you sort of situation rather than the running back so um it no that that that makes me feel good because clearly this West Virginia team has a hard time putting points on the board and I believe we are a better team than Pittsburgh at this point.
- 45:57SPEAKER_03: So I I think if if you can if if if Pittsburgh can hold them to 17 and if we hold them to 17 I feel very good about our chances of winning.
- 46:04SPEAKER_03: And especially if you're able to lock down that running back I don't think it'll be any issue to keep them below 20 points.
- 46:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah in the Oregon game you really stopped their run game really nicely Irving is a great running back and you held him to three and a half yards a carry uh for like 30 something yards total the entire game he did get a touchdown but other than that you really stopped the run well.
- 46:25SPEAKER_04: Wyoming kind of the same deal I mean 4.5 yards a carry was the highest of any rusher on Wyoming and it was the quarterback.
- 46:34SPEAKER_04: So you know there were obvious holes in the pass rush lanes there and that's what Joey McGuire and DeRuter have harped on throughout this entire season is the pass rush lanes.
- 46:45SPEAKER_04: So you know you gotta you gotta stop that and you got to stop the running backs you've done a good job of it Jalen Hutchings Tony Bradford huge parts of that the linebackers I think it played very well considering the circumstances Josiah Pierre is having himself a heck of a season very proud of him.
- 47:01SPEAKER_04: So you know play your game you should win this game comfortably you really should don't let the crowd get involved don't let this become a sneaky one where they get a special teams touchdown or you know something else of that nature you got to be tightened up on all areas of the field.
- 47:16SPEAKER_03: Do you worry about like an extra dose of trick plays coming out of this team of West Virginia or of Texas Tech?
- 47:22SPEAKER_03: No Virginia I think we'll keep it basic.
- 47:25SPEAKER_04: No I I don't think West Virginia is talented enough to pull off I I could potentially see something if they're in a dire situation where we go up two or three touchdowns early and they just have to try something potentially but no I think they're gonna play a pretty basic game plan of trying to get the run game going and live and die on that end.
- 47:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah I do you foresee a lot of fourth downs for them like going for no no I think they'll punt a good amount yeah I think they'll play pretty conservative I don't think again I don't think with the backup quarterback you're really especially on like fourth and more than three or four I don't I don't think you're going for it.
- 48:00SPEAKER_04: If you're fourth and two you have good enough running backs to go for it.
- 48:03SPEAKER_04: It depends on what side of the field but no I think Neil Brown overall has been pretty conservative this year.
- 48:07SPEAKER_03: Steven how do we talk about the Charlotte game without bringing up awesome McNamara it's McNamara rules on fire dude he's the fun he's so good dude that is the first he's having a year that's the first player that Neil Brown mentioned in his presser he said they have McNamara and that guy's awesome he is he is he's great Neil Brown knows ball and he knows the climb I've always said this and he knows the tomato life the misty tomato life he does Misty Tomato I I got I got I gotta say this game makes me kind of sad because I love Mountaineer fans on Twitter.
- 48:44SPEAKER_03: I do too they are so funny dude because they they are they are absolutely in that stage with the coaching staff where they are just full sin shitposts about him and it's just it's so funny man I love it so much.
- 48:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah it's uh we love your rational we love the the mountaineer fans they've been fantastic but don't get too involved on Saturday okay no make sure make sure y'all stay home or something yeah seriously let's uh let's have ourselves a game I don't have much more you play your game I think Tyler Shuck has a fantastic game i and we'll get to our we'll get to our final picks here when we get to the rest of it but anything else yeah on this one yeah dude i i'm really excited about this game because i feel like as a fan base we're allowed to hit the refresh button because starting saturday we are zero and zero okay and what really matters we are zero and zero so we can all just hit a reset button I hope the locker room does too and we just go out there and play some freaking football man not even remember all the nonsense that happened before because we can wash it all away once we get started one and oh in conference play dude the world the world is our oyster to open up throw some lemon juice on maybe some cocktail sauce and slurp it up you know what I mean all right I love it love the oyster talk here on the talk and oysters podcast all right before we get to picks we need to talk about the rough start for the Big 12 because this has been brutal to watch last week was especially brutal you saw Iowa State lose to Ohio you saw Missouri beat Kansas State University of Ohio I think that's true that's Ohio University my Bobcats who I made the correct pick last week so you did props to me uh that's very proud of you that's that's a bold pick too thank you ohio took care of business my bobcats the Missouri Tigers beat Kansas State in a heartbreaker six that's one sucks yard that's got a sting in your Kansas sucks I hated that I hated watching it because Missouri completely messed up the end of the game there they took the coaching the coaching was brutal they took a false or they they took a delay game when they didn't need to it was so stupid they sent the field goal kicker out the quarterback stayed in it was a cluster F.
- 51:02SPEAKER_03: And it yeah they did not deserve to win that one and they Gino Garcia had a good game against Harlton as well by the way Gino Garcia's not been bad this year.
- 51:12SPEAKER_03: I'll say it again I know that wasn't uh he's improving the I'm saying he was knocking bombs I'm mostly saying it to the people that think he's having a bad year because they look and he's missed so many field goals we went through the whole situation.
- 51:25SPEAKER_04: Gino Garcia is a fine kicker.
- 51:27SPEAKER_03: I think he's doing fine the yeah Kansas State lost to Missouri Miami of Ohio upsetting Cincinnati in overtime this one was the worst one South Alabama absolutely crushing the Oklahoma State Cowboys the worst one the worst one BYU managed to beat Arkansas and kind of go back up a little bit West Virginia beat Pitt that was big you know a few rivalry games in there I mean yeah Kansas State Missouri is obviously a rivalry game but also Cincinnati and Miami's apparently rivalry game as well I guess those towns are close by um so but I it's just it's you can't be dropping those especially when they're a superior team which both of them were and they lost to inferior opponents so that's just come on what the heck are we doing Kansas beating Nevada by seven it's uh that's Kansas that's Kansas and they won't supposed to be better they did they won but they're supposed to be better than you know I don't know.
- 52:29SPEAKER_03: You give it you give it you give it to a traveling Kansas C man any dub's a dub.
- 52:34SPEAKER_04: It has been a rough start for the new Big 12 and that is unfortunate because who's at top Texas and OU which is the last thing we wanted shut up and now I'm not saying that's going to continue on in the Big 12 play Texas didn't play a fantastic game against Wyoming OU and that Alabama win is looking sus I mean they beat SMU I guess that's okay but it sounds like this is still having it's not this is not the year that the new Big 12 needed to suck.
- 53:10SPEAKER_04: This is not the year and yet I know they're doing it and it's ruining we're part of the problem okay I'm not saying we're free of it we're one and two dude like what so it's it's a collective issue here.
- 53:23SPEAKER_04: It is and I need us to be better so I can and I'm not I'm not like raw rah I'm not raw rah big 12 I'm never rah rah big 12 but it also kind of sucks to see the SEC fans and the Texas fans and the OU fans talk about it and they're completely right.
- 53:42SPEAKER_03: I I don't I don't know if SEC fans are the SEC is not having a great offseason either I mean uh at a conference either they're they're struggling but quite probably the most they have in years as well.
- 53:50SPEAKER_04: It's mostly Texas and OU.
- 53:52SPEAKER_04: They're they're saying what they need to say and they're 100% right and I hate it.
- 53:58SPEAKER_03: Hey whatever not a single Big 12 game has been played yet for them so I it's not it's not over till it's over.
- 54:04SPEAKER_03: Um and honestly more than anything I think next year is more important anyway when it comes to all that I don't know if that's just copium but I think the Big 12 getting out of the gates like full sin in its newest form in its newest probably final form for at least a decade um is probably a bigger deal.
- 54:20SPEAKER_03: And you have teams like Colorado being the center of college football right now.
- 54:24SPEAKER_03: And that's great.
- 54:25SPEAKER_04: So I think next year is a little more important Utah and Colorado holding it down for the new Big 12.
- 54:32SPEAKER_04: Gotta love it.
- 54:33SPEAKER_04: Still on the Dion hype train absolutely okay picks you're still up for the year we have made 50 picks through week three you 36 of 50 solid 72% I'm 34 of 50 68%.
- 54:50SPEAKER_03: This is very similar so close to 69.
- 54:53SPEAKER_04: This is very similar to just our average GPA in college and high school we have very much been if we get a C awesome yeah you're you're going but you're you right now you have to go to the teacher and be like come on man it's 68 yeah that's true but I honestly if I'm taking a class that I'm not so sure about and I get a 68 I'm okay with it.
- 55:12SPEAKER_04: Like I'm not I'm not mad.
- 55:14SPEAKER_04: We got we we got some leeway of like we got some leeway yeah I should study for the next one but man 68 not too bad.
- 55:23SPEAKER_03: No absolutely man I'm I'm very thrilled if this is finance class I am grabbing a stone and doing a cheers absolutely all right let's go down the list we have much fewer games to talk about now because we are getting into the conference play and so teams will play each other and there's just not going to be as many games so let's start big 12 go to pack 12 and then we'll pick Texas Tech at the very end number 16 Oklahoma traveling to Cincinnati Cincinnati a 14 point underdog at home who you got you can't lose to Miami Miami Ohio the real Miami and expect to beat OU um I think it will be a big game though I think Cincinnati fans will show out and nippert like big I don't think they'll do the U of H inaugural game I think they'll be I think it'll be loud and proud in there and um not just because it's OU but just like it's the inaugural Big 12 game and they're feel they're feeling pretty high on their program generally right now.
- 56:29SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 56:29SPEAKER_03: And I I think that spread sounds perfect.
- 56:32SPEAKER_03: I think it'll be at most a 14 point win for Oklahoma I'm going OU.
- 56:37SPEAKER_04: I am also going OU.
- 56:38SPEAKER_03: I don't like it neither do I hate I hate that the Big 12 scheduled OU's first game to be against Cincinnati but hey it was looking frosty for a second but no longer no I mean they beat Pitt and Pitt stinks yeah yeah but it was I think it was on the road it's P5 opponent but then you go and drop it at home pit stinks that quarterback is awful that quarterback was terrible um yeah OU's gonna win this game I would love it if Cincinnati pulled this out you're there's something to it being the inaugural Big 12 game yeah for them and their fans are going to show out I agree with all that it's gonna be a home court advantage a home field advantage I keep saying court Oklahoma's probably still gonna win this game so I'm gonna go I agree um battle for DFW SMU traveling very far to Fort Worth to play the TCU Hornfrogs TCU six point favorites who you got I'm going TCU here I and I think that again Vegas is on point right now I think I think that sounds about right I think it'll be a touchdown of a difference of a game because SMU is looking a little frisky you know they're and especially in a game like this they're gonna they're gonna want it way more than TCU so TCU has to be ready to play so because otherwise he's gonna get away from him and I would not be shocked if SMU upsets TCU here but I think I'm going TCU right now.
- 57:58SPEAKER_04: Is this the last game they're playing I guess for a while yeah I think the series is done after this for a good bit I'm taking SMU wow okay and continue the rough start for the Big 12 uh into this season I I do too I would I I don't I'm never gonna root the whole ACC move I'm never gonna root for TCU though so like I'm not gonna be that mad at TCU I'm not gonna cheer for SMU I'm not gonna imagine TCU fans but way worse I mean they're all pretty bad.
- 58:32SPEAKER_03: So TCU's more rival are they a part of is the real question with their fans.
- 58:38SPEAKER_03: For real I'm gonna go SMU to beat TCU in the last game of this whatever rivalry is called first split the iron skillet iron skillet yeah it's a pretty cool deal pretty cool deal I hate that they're ending the series that's pretty stupid that's so weak and especially when the SME's gonna be in the ACC now you get now there's no like scheduling issue with that you know it's a power five team yeah it's pretty stupid moving on BYU traveling to Lawrence Kansas Kansas an eight and a half point favorite what against the three and oh BYU Cougs oh man who you got dude this is actually a tougher game than I would have expected this was this is one of the tougher ones to pick this is tough man okay I'm gonna I'm gonna go by you i'm gonna I'm gonna go by you I don't that's perhaps I guess it's it's a that's an upset alert you know but I'm going by you I think they're I think they're feeling better about themselves right now and I think they face tougher competition to be able to put the pieces together I think they feel probably more confident in their game plan than maybe KU does right now so I'm gonna go by you I also chose BYU to win on the road they looked good against Arkansas I'm not sure if Arkansas is the team that they've been the last couple years they did win in Fayetteville that's tough to do yeah um I don't know I just think I I think BYU is gonna gonna do it here.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_04: I I'm not sold on Kansas I'm not can't I'm not sold on Kansas being you know fantastic I've watched a good amount of them this year and I'm just not sold so I'm gonna I'm gonna also go with BYU here.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_03: I mean KU manhandled Illinois Illinois stinks so hurt the poop bowl the poop bowl Oklahoma State traveling to Ames this is Iowa State a three and a half point favorite over the Cowboys really who you got dude I I love how we're saying it's the poop poo bowl in freaking Oklahoma State is mentioned has been like the most consistent team in this conference for the like the past 10 years.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_03: Gundy washed what is going on in still water they have Alan Bowman okay that's that's the glass himself he was he was horrible against South Alabama.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_04: He was he hasn't played football in like three years that's true he went to Michigan to get that degree and decided to just play fourth string quarterback at Michigan and all of a sudden Gundy's like that's my guy that's who I need on my team he's him who you can't it's still such a bizarre situation with old Sanders ducking out and everything what the heck he wouldn't be a backup he would he's not played he's weird he's backing up Jackson Dart and everybody else left they had a uh Ford I think a trace forward he transferred to OU and he was their best defensive player last year oh my god where's the bond Oklahoma State down bad Gundy watched it's all yeah Gundy is in some sort of reshuffling here because I mean Oklahoma State's never gonna fire Mike Gundy but what is he doing dude as they shouldn't it may be a mutual departing yeah I mean maybe he he maybe he'll do like a really early retirement or something like that.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_03: No I think I think Gundy's still gonna coach for a long time I I I I just I there's no way Oklahoma State fires Mike Gundy but um I'm gonna this is a tough one this is probably the hardest one um yeah they're both bad Iowa State also very bad they're both so bad hey and we don't get to play either I'm gonna I'll go with Vegas here I'll say Iowa State just because they're at home and just because they've at least shown something you know they they played Iowa fairly close right and you know the Iowa they played ohio close and ohio's not a bad team but it's still a Mac team I'm gonna go Iowa State Iowa State here you're stealing my picks I also went with the clones dang it boo boo um yeah I there's no winners in this one there's just bad football this is just bad football overall speaking of bad football Houston Cougars hosting the Sam Houston State Bearcats what was that about what they they played TCU last week but not now they're because TCU and SMU had to play this week they I think they always play week four TCU always plays a conference game a week early but no yeah um the Bearcats traveling very far to Houston Sam Houston traveling to Houston which one's the real Houston huntsville very far from Houston yes quite the distance 20 20 minutes dude they're taking a prison bus to get there they're they're doing it they're doing it uh Houston 12 and a half point favorites in this one cough I don't want to pick the couch it's the cougs dude like I don't care I mean it's it's it's it's not Sam Houston State they gave BYU a tough time but uh it was the first game of the year I think the couch are gonna win okay this is what I was gonna ask you prepod that I'm saving for right now if you could go back knowing what we know now about the showing in the first ever Big 12 game for the University of Houston the brutal start to the year losing to Rice Dana Holgerson on the hot seat very much would you pick another team if you had the choice to come into the Big 12 over Houston I'm talking Memphis I'm talking SMU I'm talking you could potentially even if you just waited it out you could have got probably Oregon State or Washington State would you rather have one of those teams versus the University of Houston no honestly no look I I I I get it the Houston the Houston fan support stinks it does but Houston has a higher ceiling than everybody you just mentioned and it whenever they're good they're good and I think adding Houston was necessary like they're there they are the next most popular team in the state without question and they have the potential to really get something going um it it's in the st the the the booster support is way better there than say at like a Memphis or a Washington state.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_03: It just is like they they do they just have the resources and the potential and the history with everybody in the state to make it interesting.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_03: I I I I know it'd be funny to say not the coux but the cougs made sense.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah yeah yeah I mean you're logical and you're thinking I'm just like this is the worst start for Houston covenant like coming off the year they had last year into this year like they're gonna be brutal this year.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah and I I think like an extra frustration with it is there are Argument about like their poor fan showing before was like, Well, we we had to host teams like Navy and East Carolina while you get to host UT and OU.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_04: Support the troops.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you but it's just like they're like, once we get a P5 teams, it'll change.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_04: Well, it didn't, it didn't.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_04: You had your first game of the I know you're that granted, they're coming off a loss to rice.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_04: That's brutal.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_04: It's a bad year, it's a bad year.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_04: Like, there's not a lot to cheer for right now if you're a Houston Gougar fan.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_04: I you know Dana's toast.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_04: Dana's toast toast.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_04: Donovan Smith has not been good.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_04: I'm I don't I want Donnie to do good, so bad, because he shows flashes, man.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_04: But no, he's been bad.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_04: He's our boy.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_04: Couge's been bad.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_04: They're gonna win this game, but man, they're in for a tough, tough year.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_04: All right, longhorns at Baylor in Waco.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_04: Uh, Texas, a 14 and a half point favorite going to Waco.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_04: Baylor, rough start to the year.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_04: Stinks.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_04: Not saying we're much better.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_04: Our start to the year is what I'm saying.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the records, yeah.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_03: The records are the same, but we didn't get waxed by San Marcus Bobcats, okay?
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_03: Baylor, wow.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_04: Bad that was awful.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_04: Bad.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_03: And then they got roasted alive by a team that has never beaten a P5 team ever.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_04: And the Utah game, the Utah game, they kind of got screwed.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_04: Like there was clear pass interference at the end of the game there.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_04: They had a chance.
- 1:07:42SPEAKER_04: Again, Utah Baylor probably should have won that game, to be honest with you, against Utah.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_04: So I don't know.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_04: You can kind of you can kind of put it similar to the Oregon game with us, but no, I Texas going to Baylor would be great.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_04: It would be great.
- 1:07:58SPEAKER_04: It would if they pulled it out in Waco.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_04: But no, I'm taking Texas.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_03: I'll say this, and I'm gonna take we're just gonna say I'm gonna take Texas as well.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_03: But this is gonna be uh so emotional.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_03: The crowd is going to be crazy.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_03: And I'm just thinking saying things could get weird, and if things get weird and Baylor upsets UT, I think the entire mood for UT season takes a nosedive because I think it's just because everyone else in the conference is gonna be like, oh boy, can't wait to see you longhorns.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_03: Like you are not invincible.
- 1:08:38SPEAKER_03: And I I I really do hope that the Baylor Bears get up there and punch them, but I don't see an upset happening out of this Baylor team right now.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_03: I just it's ugly, it's ugly.
- 1:08:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the uh Texas ended up beating Wyoming by three touchdowns, might have screwed their screwed them up a little bit because we've seen Texas come off a high and not play up the standard.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_04: So that's kind of been the story of Texas.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_04: You know, they'll play good when they get the big game, and then they kind of play, you know, to competition as they go and drop a couple of these.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_04: But no, I I just think Baylor's bad.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I don't think Baylor's good at all.
- 1:09:15SPEAKER_04: And they're still not gonna have Blake Shapen, they're still starting their backup, so um, yeah, I'll take I'll take Texas.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_03: Unfortunately, the go Bears.
- 1:09:23SPEAKER_04: We're all about the Joe Bears there, really rooting for the Bears hard.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_04: UCF traveling to Manhattan, K-State coming off a brutal loss to the Missouri Tigers.
- 1:09:35SPEAKER_04: UCF traveling for their first Big 12 game of their life.
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_04: Who you got?
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_04: Uh K-State, seven-point favorites.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_03: I think it's be a great game.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_03: I think this will be a really good game.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_03: I mean, it'll be close.
- 1:09:47SPEAKER_03: Um, I but I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go Wildcats.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_03: I I just you know, you're at home, you know, in Manhattan has their high, their hopes still very high, you know.
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_03: They still they're still getting for a Big 12 championship, and I think they can absolutely still go get it.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_03: So I'm definitely going Manhattan here.
- 1:10:01SPEAKER_03: I'm definitely going with K-State Wildcats.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_04: It may not happen this week that I catch up to you because I'm also going with K-State.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_04: I had it written down.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_04: UCF, I think.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_02: It would have been a policy pick.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_04: It's still without irrational.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_04: No, it's still and college football is weird, man.
- 1:10:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we can absolutely see UCF win this game, just like we can see, you know, we're both picking BYU to be Kansas, but that's a pretty, you know, all things considered, a pretty big underdog.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_04: You know, the I think OK State, Iowa State's kind of a toss-up.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_04: It's just battle of brutal.
- 1:10:31SPEAKER_04: Um who knows?
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_04: Baylor could beat Texas.
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_04: But no, I got K-State here.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_04: I I don't think there's a real logical way.
- 1:10:38SPEAKER_04: I think K-State's gonna come out and uh be pretty pissed off after really last week.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_03: You're expecting like a you're expecting a beating.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_04: I I think I'm expecting a two-touchdown game at least.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_04: Oh, okay.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_03: I I think I think UCF's gonna surprise.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_03: I think they're I think they're the surprise of the season.
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_04: Like if they beat they're tough, but I still don't think they have their starting quarterback.
- 1:10:56SPEAKER_04: I think he's out for at least a couple more weeks, so I think that might be it for them.
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_04: But yeah, all right, that'll do it for Big 12.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_04: Let's go to the four-pack schools that are soon to be Big 12.
- 1:11:07SPEAKER_04: Number 22, UCLA traveling to Salt Lake City to play the number 11 Utah Utes.
- 1:11:14SPEAKER_04: Utah five-point favorite.
- 1:11:16SPEAKER_04: Who you got?
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_05: Ute.
- 1:11:19SPEAKER_04: I'm taking UCLA.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_04: What?
- 1:11:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:11:22SPEAKER_03: You're just you did you did you just change your answer?
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_04: No, I didn't.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_04: I didn't.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_04: I had UCLA written down.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna go with UCLA.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_04: Utes.
- 1:11:30SPEAKER_04: Utah.
- 1:11:30SPEAKER_04: I don't know if they're gonna have rising, and I think that's gonna affect them against a really good team.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_04: Utah, they played Florida and they played, you know, Baylor.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_04: They haven't really played a lot of good teams.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_03: That's an awesome out of Copper Slate.
- 1:11:45SPEAKER_03: That's 2v5 teams.
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_04: It is on most seasons, on most years, and I actually think Florida, Florida ended up being, I think they're in the top 25 this week.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_04: No way, game three.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_04: I think they made it.
- 1:11:57SPEAKER_04: I think they made it at like 25 or something.
- 1:11:59SPEAKER_04: Larkey.
- 1:11:59SPEAKER_04: It is, it's bad.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_04: But no, I'm gonna take UCLA to upset the youths on the road.
- 1:12:05SPEAKER_04: All right, biggest game of all these, number 10.
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_04: Am I reading that right?
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_04: No, I had it mixed up.
- 1:12:15SPEAKER_04: Number 19, Colorado traveling to Oregon to play the number 10 Ducks.
- 1:12:26SPEAKER_04: Oregon, a 20 and a half point favorite.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_04: What in this game?
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_04: Colorado played it tight to Colorado State last week.
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_04: They almost blew it, but they won it.
- 1:12:40SPEAKER_04: They pulled it out.
- 1:12:41SPEAKER_04: Colorado without Travis Hunter for multiple weeks.
- 1:12:44SPEAKER_04: Who would have thought the guy that plays 120 snaps a game got hurt?
- 1:12:48SPEAKER_04: Insane.
- 1:12:49SPEAKER_04: Who would have thought?
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_04: Are you taking Dion or are you taking Bo Knicks?
- 1:12:55SPEAKER_03: Steven.
- 1:12:56SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 1:12:57SPEAKER_03: Do it.
- 1:12:58SPEAKER_03: Frick it.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_03: I'm riding the hot hands.
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_03: Go buffs, baby.
- 1:13:03SPEAKER_03: Go buffs.
- 1:13:05SPEAKER_04: Until they miss.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_04: I'm taking Oregon.
- 1:13:09SPEAKER_03: I knew you would.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_03: So like taking Oregon.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_03: We gotta get some variety in this show, though.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_04: Sorry, I'm taking Oregon at home.
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_03: Uh frick the ducks.
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_04: I hate them.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_04: Listen, we're gonna beat him in where do they put Eugene?
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_04: We're gonna beat him in Eugene.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_04: Is it next year?
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_04: We'd be a dumb town name.
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_04: Eugene's a nerd name.
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_04: How cool would go into that game be though?
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_04: Amazing.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_04: When they traveled.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_04: We we may think about it.
- 1:13:33SPEAKER_04: We'll see.
- 1:13:34SPEAKER_04: We'll see where the funds are.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_03: Um we'll see where the detrimental economies at.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_04: Yeah, god.
- 1:13:48SPEAKER_03: It's probably like you're looking probably looking at like 800 bucks right there.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_04: God.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_04: We're driving to Oregon.
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_04: We're doing it.
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_04: All right, next one.
- 1:14:00SPEAKER_04: Arizona traveling to Stanford.
- 1:14:04SPEAKER_04: Arizona.
- 1:14:05SPEAKER_04: 11-point favorites.
- 1:14:07SPEAKER_04: Stanford is bad.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_04: Like I thought you were about to say Stanford is back.
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_04: No, Stanford is bad.
- 1:14:15SPEAKER_03: They're d they have absolutely hey, we gave the couch crap, but dude, the Stanford Cardinal, the Stanford Color, has zero fan support to speak of whatsoever in that stadium.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_03: I am going Arizona so hard, possibly more confident than any other game you're listing.
- 1:14:36SPEAKER_04: Same.
- 1:14:37SPEAKER_04: Uh Stanford just coming off a loss to Sacramento State.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_04: No way! An FCS team 30 to 23.
- 1:14:49SPEAKER_04: Stanford.
- 1:14:50SPEAKER_04: My god.
- 1:14:52SPEAKER_04: And then they lost the previous week at USC 56 to 10.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_04: So holy shrewn in Arizona.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_04: Stanford stinks.
- 1:15:01SPEAKER_04: Stanford stinks.
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_03: Your uh ACC Stanford Cardinal.
- 1:15:08SPEAKER_04: And SMU Mustangs.
- 1:15:10SPEAKER_04: And Al Golden Bears.
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_03: Get excited, ACC.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_03: That's gonna save the conference.
- 1:15:17SPEAKER_03: I think that there and there.
- 1:15:18SPEAKER_04: Truly.
- 1:15:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's totally not just gonna lose Florida State Clubs and North Carolina and everybody else with the next round of realignment comes around.
- 1:15:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:15:26SPEAKER_04: We're taking the Wildcats.
- 1:15:28SPEAKER_04: Speaking of USC, number four.
- 1:15:30SPEAKER_04: Poor Wildcats.
- 1:15:32SPEAKER_04: Poor Arizona State.
- 1:15:33SPEAKER_04: USC traveling, number five USC traveling to Tempe to play Arizona State.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_04: All right, next game state.
- 1:15:42SPEAKER_04: Arizona State.
- 1:15:44SPEAKER_04: First off the line's hilarious.
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_04: USC are 34-point favorite.
- 1:15:48SPEAKER_04: Oh my god.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_03: For a power five interconference, like in conference matchup.
- 1:15:54SPEAKER_04: We both called the Fresno State game.
- 1:15:57SPEAKER_04: Fresno State shut out, shut out Arizona at home.
- 1:16:00SPEAKER_04: Arizona State at home.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_03: That was an easy call.
- 1:16:03SPEAKER_04: 29 to nothing.
- 1:16:04SPEAKER_04: Fresno State beat Arizona State in Tempe last week.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_04: It's gonna be much of the same.
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_04: I I would take the plus 34 USC.
- 1:16:15SPEAKER_03: It is irresponsible for an Arizona State team to be this bad.
- 1:16:20SPEAKER_03: I mean, and say you can say the same thing about Stanford, but it is completely irresponsible, criminal for Arizona State to be this bad.
- 1:16:29SPEAKER_04: Bad news.
- 1:16:30SPEAKER_04: Bad they're down bad.
- 1:16:32SPEAKER_04: So great, great that they're covering the Big 12 now and not, you know, yeah.
- 1:16:36SPEAKER_03: We don't count.
- 1:16:37SPEAKER_03: They're packed 12.
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_03: They don't count yet.
- 1:16:39SPEAKER_04: Whatever, Sun Devils.
- 1:16:41SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 1:16:42SPEAKER_04: Texas Tech Red Raiders traveling to Morgantown.
- 1:16:45SPEAKER_04: 230 Central Time.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_04: ESBN plus Texas Tech four and a half point favorites going into this one.
- 1:16:55SPEAKER_04: Over under, overunder is set at 55.
- 1:16:59SPEAKER_04: Tristan, I'm gonna ask you three things.
- 1:17:01SPEAKER_04: Will Texas Tech win this game?
- 1:17:03SPEAKER_04: Will Texas Tech cover?
- 1:17:05SPEAKER_04: Will the overunder be over or under?
- 1:17:11SPEAKER_03: Yes, yes, no.
- 1:17:14SPEAKER_04: Oh.
- 1:17:16SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_03: I think it'll be a little lower scoring than we expect.
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_03: But I I I think we cover as I I think we lock him out.
- 1:17:24SPEAKER_03: I think we you know cover the spread.
- 1:17:26SPEAKER_03: I think I think we win by a touchdown.
- 1:17:28SPEAKER_03: So I think we cover the spread.
- 1:17:30SPEAKER_03: And I I think potentially two touchdowns.
- 1:17:32SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I think we get the job done.
- 1:17:34SPEAKER_04: 55?
- 1:17:35SPEAKER_04: That's like a 20 to 20 something game.
- 1:17:37SPEAKER_03: That's uh now that you say it out loud, but now that you say that out the city.
- 1:17:43SPEAKER_04: You could get in the 30s.
- 1:17:46SPEAKER_04: You could get one team in the 30s.
- 1:17:47SPEAKER_03: So then yeah, uh again, I I remain confident now that you've uh accounted all 30 fingers, I feel good.
- 1:17:54SPEAKER_04: I will take Texas Tech.
- 1:17:56SPEAKER_04: I will say they cover, and I will say we go over 55 points.
- 1:17:59SPEAKER_04: I think the offense figures something out in Morgantown.
- 1:18:03SPEAKER_04: We continue the tradition of beating West Virginia in Morgantown and away from Morgantown.
- 1:18:09SPEAKER_04: Texas Tech, I'm I'm on the I'm I'm back in.
- 1:18:12SPEAKER_04: I'm back in.
- 1:18:13SPEAKER_03: Steven, the all-time series is tied 6'6.
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_04: Hey, what six six?
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_04: We've only played 12 times, yeah.
- 1:18:22SPEAKER_03: And only um only 11 times as conference foes.
- 1:18:26SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 1:18:27SPEAKER_03: Because the first time we ever played them was in 1938.
- 1:18:31SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's a great year.
- 1:18:32SPEAKER_03: El Paso, Texas.
- 1:18:35SPEAKER_03: Great year, final score seven to six.
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_03: West Virginia head coaches for TTU, Pete W.
- 1:18:42SPEAKER_03: Calhoun, or Cal Cal Calhoun?
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna say Calvin's Calhoun.
- 1:18:48SPEAKER_03: And West Virginia's head coach, Dr.
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_03: Marshall, little sleepy Glenn.
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_03: That is literally says little Slimpy, little sleepy.
- 1:18:58SPEAKER_04: That is the most 1938 name of all time.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_04: And here comes Dr.
- 1:19:04SPEAKER_04: Marshall, little sleepy Glenn, and the West Virginia Mountaineers coming out of the extra Red Raiders.
- 1:19:11SPEAKER_04: This is a beautiful day.
- 1:19:13SPEAKER_04: Um, no, I think we're the Matadors in 38.
- 1:19:16SPEAKER_04: You're right, you're right.
- 1:19:17SPEAKER_04: 1938, that was uh the Red Raiders at that point.
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_04: World War II did not start quite yet, so people are doing the kickoff.
- 1:19:25SPEAKER_03: It'll be the preseason, but 38.
- 1:19:28SPEAKER_04: There was just some tensions, there wasn't some major mass destruction polling, that's for sure.
- 1:19:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so 38, I guess overall not a great year, but also not the worst year.
- 1:19:40SPEAKER_04: Um no, I think Texas Tech takes care of business, all things considered.
- 1:19:45SPEAKER_04: I I just have a little feeling.
- 1:19:47SPEAKER_04: I don't know if it's just coming off a win that gets me back in.
- 1:19:51SPEAKER_04: Uh, our road record should not show that we should win this game, but hey, I'm in.
- 1:19:57SPEAKER_03: We we both beat our in our our our heated rivals.
- 1:20:01SPEAKER_03: We're both feeling high.
- 1:20:03SPEAKER_03: So let's go have a game, Mountaineers.
- 1:20:06SPEAKER_04: Ride the high of beating Tarleton State.
- 1:20:08SPEAKER_03: 100%, man.
- 1:20:09SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I feel good about this.
- 1:20:10SPEAKER_03: I think it's gonna be a fun game.
- 1:20:11SPEAKER_03: I think we're gonna feel good as tech fans come Sunday.
- 1:20:15SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 1:20:16SPEAKER_04: Anything else before we end it off with Song of the Week?

- 1:20:48SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 1:20:48SPEAKER_03: I can't skip the song.
- 1:20:50SPEAKER_03: If I am in the shower and I got my speaker nearby, this is going on, and I'm dancing like I'm in a tweeny bob girl movie from the 2000s.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 1:20:59SPEAKER_03: That is what's happening when the song is on.
- 1:21:01SPEAKER_07: Working nine to five.
- 1:21:04SPEAKER_07: What a way to make a living.

- 1:21:55SPEAKER_04: Cool.
- 1:21:56SPEAKER_04: Uh, my song of the week, I thought I'd uh bring it back to one of the talk and tech originals, not repeating songs, but repeating an OG artist of the Talk and Tech songs of the week, and one of my favorite artists, something that you introduced me to long, long ago.
- 1:22:10SPEAKER_04: Prophets and Outlaws.
- 1:22:14SPEAKER_04: Fantastic band.
- 1:22:15SPEAKER_04: We all know it.
- 1:22:16SPEAKER_04: Uh, this song that I am giving the song of the week is Texas Home by Prophets and Outlaws, because we're coming home after beating West Virginia in Morgantown, feeling good, being back to 500, maybe riding a little bit of a winning streak, two games.
- 1:22:34SPEAKER_04: I think we're gonna be feeling good.
- 1:22:36SPEAKER_04: Texas home, Prophets and Outlaws.

- 1:22:53SPEAKER_03: A band that should be bigger than they are, all right?

- 1:22:57SPEAKER_03: They like it.
- 1:22:57SPEAKER_03: It's such a fun sound.
