Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: It's a media podcast.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome to Meet Eater Trivia, the only game show where
- 0:12Speaker 2: conservation always wins. I'm your host, Spencer new Arthan. Today
- 0:16Speaker 2: we're joined by Jannis Brody, Randall, Nate, Sarah and Cory.
- 0:20Speaker 2: This is a ten round quiz show with questions from
- 0:22Speaker 2: Medeater's four verticals, which are hunting, fishing, conservation and cooking.
- 0:26Speaker 2: There is a prize. Meat Eater will donate five hundred
- 0:28Speaker 2: dollars to the conservation organization of the winners choosing. All right,
- 0:32Speaker 2: we have a mailbag question to start today's show. If
- 0:35Speaker 2: you have a question you want the crew to answer,
- 0:37Speaker 2: send your question with the subject line Mailbag to Trivia
- 0:41Speaker 2: at the medeater dot com. Stephen Funk says I hunted
- 0:44Speaker 2: as a kid, but only got one deer and some squirrels.
- 0:47Speaker 2: I'm now thirty two and wanting to get back into hunting,
- 0:50Speaker 2: but have no one to go with. Nord learn from
- 0:52Speaker 2: any suggestions for someone getting back into it, such as
- 0:55Speaker 2: where to start and recommend gear. I've considered getting a
- 0:59Speaker 2: Henry twenty two and going for squirrel on local public lands,
- 1:03Speaker 2: as I no longer have access to private land as
- 1:06Speaker 2: I did when I was a kid.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Oh, can I go first?
- 1:08Speaker 4: Yes?
- 1:08Speaker 2: What do we got for Steven?
- 1:10Speaker 5: Well, you practice a little bit with his question before
- 1:13Speaker 5: we started, But I didn't read the email earlier, and
- 1:16Speaker 5: so I had no idea about his squirrel hunting. But
- 1:19Speaker 5: that right there is a one hundred percent where he
- 1:21Speaker 5: should just pick right back up.
- 1:23Speaker 2: He chose a good place to start.
- 1:24Speaker 4: Did he include where he's from?
- 1:25Speaker 2: He did not say.
- 1:27Speaker 6: But if he's only going to get one gun, I'd
- 1:29Speaker 6: go shot gun, not twenty two.
- 1:32Speaker 3: He says he can only afford one gun. He didn't
- 1:34Speaker 3: say that.
- 1:34Speaker 2: He says, I've considered getting a Henry twenty two and
- 1:37Speaker 2: going for squirrel on local public land. I'd assume he's
- 1:40Speaker 2: just gonna buy one new gun.
- 1:42Speaker 4: Aesthetically it's most pleasing, okay, But if.
- 1:44Speaker 2: You want versus get yourself at twenty gauge, okay.
- 1:49Speaker 5: Yeah, maybe one you can swap barrels, you can shoot
- 1:52Speaker 5: and shoot a deer, because that's what he wants to do,
- 1:54Speaker 5: is shooting get himself.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Then what state didn't say? What state not say? Where
- 1:57Speaker 2: he's from? Nate Mason? When did you kill your first?
- 2:00Speaker 7: That would have been twenty twenty?
- 2:02Speaker 3: Shot it?
- 2:03Speaker 7: Shot it with both Age oh Man twenty four.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Age twenty four, can you give some advice to.
- 2:08Speaker 7: See you so as a fellow onset adult onset hunter,
- 2:12Speaker 7: you need to like, you got to get a mentor, dude,
- 2:14Speaker 7: like you gotta find someone who's willing to take you
- 2:16Speaker 7: under their wing. It will speed your learning curve up
- 2:19Speaker 7: so fast and it'll make you actually enjoy it. The
- 2:22Speaker 7: key to that is, like, come prepared when you approach
- 2:26Speaker 7: someone to ask them for your time, come with a plan,
- 2:28Speaker 7: have your hunting license, have your weapon picked out, do
- 2:31Speaker 7: some initial scouting even though your scouting is going to
- 2:33Speaker 7: be pointless, and show that you're invested. I have so
- 2:36Speaker 7: many people who now approach me and say, hey, I
- 2:38Speaker 7: want to learn to hunt, and I'm like, cool, do it,
- 2:41Speaker 7: And then they don't have a hunting license, they don't
- 2:43Speaker 7: have a plan, they don't know what kind of weapon
- 2:44Speaker 7: they're going to use, and it just falls out. But
- 2:46Speaker 7: when a guy approaches me with a plan and shows
- 2:49Speaker 7: that he's bought in, then that'll that'll set you up
- 2:51Speaker 7: for success.
- 2:52Speaker 3: That kind of coming to you for that though.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean that I get what you're saying.
- 2:56Speaker 7: Oh dude, you got to come prepared.
- 2:58Speaker 4: You're going to get more out of it, but.
- 2:59Speaker 1: You don't know woud to prepare. If you're a new hunter.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Okay, if it's a new hunter fixing to kill a deer,
- 3:04Speaker 2: do you have the freezer space? Like there's a good point,
- 3:07Speaker 2: get place to see.
- 3:08Speaker 7: Dude, just chat GPT it tell whatever Chat tells you
- 3:10Speaker 7: to do it. I say, I'm going to approach this person.
- 3:13Speaker 7: What do I need to lay out? It'll give you
- 3:15Speaker 7: ten things. You do five of those things, that guy
- 3:17Speaker 7: will be so stoked and so much more likely to
- 3:18Speaker 7: help you.
- 3:19Speaker 1: I'll add to the mentor thing.
- 3:22Speaker 6: That's it's not easy finding a mentor like all the time,
- 3:27Speaker 6: Like look at your state Fish and Game Agency because
- 3:30Speaker 6: they often have like new hunter programs.
- 3:33Speaker 7: I went to a hunter one oh one thinking I
- 3:35Speaker 7: just wanted to shoot pigs with an AR fifteen. And
- 3:38Speaker 7: this guy lyle Avis, huge mediator fan, big hound hunter
- 3:41Speaker 7: or anyways, he took me under his wing and he
- 3:44Speaker 7: was awesome, and without him I would not have been
- 3:47Speaker 7: I wouldn't be here today.
- 3:48Speaker 2: As Brody said, the state orgs have a lot of
- 3:50Speaker 2: mentorship programs, as do conservation orgs. N WTF Rough Grouse Society,
- 3:55Speaker 2: National Deer Association, International Hunter Education Association or ef BHA.
- 4:00Speaker 2: They all have something like that that will hook you
- 4:03Speaker 2: up with someone who knows what they're doing.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Talk up the old timers at the shooting range.
- 4:08Speaker 8: Yeah, and don't even I would say too, Like if
- 4:12Speaker 8: you're using an org like that to try to find
- 4:14Speaker 8: a mentor, show up at like a service day, because
- 4:18Speaker 8: then you're gonna go pull fence or do whatever with
- 4:22Speaker 8: a bunch of folks who are very invested in the
- 4:24Speaker 8: lifestyle and in the future. I mean, like people with
- 4:27Speaker 8: years and years and years of experience, and.
- 4:29Speaker 4: You already know that they're.
- 4:34Speaker 8: Into the idea of passing it on in public service
- 4:37Speaker 8: and all that you're gonna have better luck, like at
- 4:39Speaker 8: a field day with with people are volunteering for fish
- 4:42Speaker 8: and wildlife than you are.
- 4:43Speaker 4: I like the gun counter, it, sportsman's warehouse or whatever.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Can I have one more thing for you to go
- 4:50Speaker 2: out there by yourself, like don't be scared like gouf,
- 4:55Speaker 2: Like as important as a mentor is, like you can
- 4:57Speaker 2: go learn a lot just going out out there and
- 5:01Speaker 2: make mistakes by yourself. So like, don't be afraid to
- 5:03Speaker 2: go out in the woods. Yeah, having a mentor is like,
- 5:06Speaker 2: you can't replace that. But I would say in the
- 5:09Speaker 2: year twenty twenty six, the learning curve has never been
- 5:11Speaker 2: smaller for something like this, specifically with like YouTube, as
- 5:15Speaker 2: someone who picked up a new outdoor hobby, like during COVID,
- 5:18Speaker 2: which was rock counting, I didn't know anything about that.
- 5:19Speaker 2: I didn't know anybody who was a rock count. I
- 5:22Speaker 2: liked it a lot of my learning through YouTube.
- 5:24Speaker 6: God Spencer, I thought you were a lifelong rock count.
- 5:26Speaker 2: I was always rock curious. I would see a rock
- 5:29Speaker 2: and be like, what is that thing? I'd like to
- 5:31Speaker 2: know if I can have that it is? Is it special?
- 5:34Speaker 2: It was really COVID that was like, okay, I think
- 5:36Speaker 2: I'm gonna get into this thing. Anyway, there was a
- 5:37Speaker 2: lot full of rocks my houses, Like, yes, you can.
- 5:42Speaker 2: You can learn a lot on YouTube. The other thing,
- 5:45Speaker 2: I would say it is a true like bona fide statistic.
- 5:50Speaker 2: I don't remember if it was via the National Shooting
- 5:53Speaker 2: Sports Foundation or the US Fish Wildless Service, but the
- 5:56Speaker 2: number one barrier to entry is having a place to
- 5:58Speaker 2: go hunt. And so for whatever state you're in, I
- 6:01Speaker 2: would say, get on X. It's like thirty bucks a year.
- 6:03Speaker 2: You'll find all the public land. Uh this guy like
- 6:07Speaker 2: I would search your own last name on there, Stephen
- 6:09Speaker 2: Funk and see if there are maybe there's an uncle
- 6:11Speaker 2: who has a farm you don't know about, or like you,
- 6:13Speaker 2: I'm serious this, I do this or I did this.
- 6:16Speaker 2: When I got on X for the first time, I
- 6:17Speaker 2: was like, Okay, where are the new hearts at? On
- 6:20Speaker 2: X is really great for that you might find the
- 6:22Speaker 2: place you can hunt. Search your bosses.
- 6:24Speaker 8: Nay sat there and me absolutely it is.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Having a place to hunt is the hardest part about hunting.
- 6:32Speaker 2: That's just a fact. So on X, I think the
- 6:35Speaker 2: thirty dollars you can spend on that is is well
- 6:37Speaker 2: worth it. And then we also have an article on
- 6:39Speaker 2: the mediator dot com that Brody wrote in twenty twenty,
- 6:41Speaker 2: how to find a hunting mentors a long time. You'll
- 6:44Speaker 2: learn some of the tips there. There you go, all right,
- 6:46Speaker 2: We have some housekeeping, but not really. The Meat Eater
- 6:49Speaker 2: Auction House of Oddities has returned. Today July eighth is
- 6:54Speaker 2: when everything kicks off. We've got more than thirty items available,
- 6:58Speaker 2: with one hundred percent of the pro seeds going to
- 7:00Speaker 2: the Meat Eater Land Access Initiative. Bro Detail folks about
- 7:04Speaker 2: the Lai and all the good work.
- 7:06Speaker 6: Yeah, it was launched back in twenty twenty. I don't
- 7:09Speaker 6: know if it was part of the Ranella Patel's campaign promise,
- 7:13Speaker 6: but back in twenty twenty, we created it to increase
- 7:18Speaker 6: public access for hunting, fishing, and all forms of outdoor recreation.
- 7:23Speaker 6: So we raised money to increase access through We do
- 7:27Speaker 6: that through donations, sales, auctions, et cetera. A few of
- 7:32Speaker 6: the notable projects twenty twenty was the first one Shiloh
- 7:35Speaker 6: Pond in Maine. That was an area in Kingfield Township
- 7:42Speaker 6: that was going to get privatized and we stepped in
- 7:45Speaker 6: and kind of rescued it. Twenty twenty two, Montana Great
- 7:48Speaker 6: Outdoors Project we opened up well, we connected. I'm not
- 7:56Speaker 6: sure how much land we actually bought, but it was
- 7:59Speaker 6: one hundred and fifty eight one hundred and fifty thousand acre.
- 8:01Speaker 6: Conservations opened up a bunch of access to a bunch
- 8:06Speaker 6: of land. Wildcat Bend in Montana is after that bunch
- 8:09Speaker 6: of access on the Yellowstone River, and then Big One.
- 8:13Speaker 6: We helped fund the Legal Defense Fund for the Missouri
- 8:16Speaker 6: for in Wyoming's Big Old Corner Crossing case and We're
- 8:23Speaker 6: back now for Tuckertown Game Lands in North Carolina for
- 8:26Speaker 6: twenty six.
- 8:28Speaker 2: As I just said, having access to a place to
- 8:30Speaker 2: hunt fish, that's the number one barrier, and that's what
- 8:32Speaker 2: the Media Land Access Initiative is working towards giving you
- 8:36Speaker 2: more places to hunt fish. Some of the highlights of
- 8:38Speaker 2: things we have in the auction house Steve's dad's old
- 8:41Speaker 2: pick up that's filled with hunting gear, a bow made
- 8:44Speaker 2: by Bear Newcomb, a tanned bear hide from Clay Newcomb,
- 8:47Speaker 2: fly fishing memorabilia from Lefty Krey, doss boat motor, that's
- 8:53Speaker 2: a one fifty V Tech outboard. Leftover barn board that's
- 8:57Speaker 2: the same barnboard that's in our new podcast studio. Three
- 9:00Speaker 2: punt gun shells, seventy three hats that were shot by
- 9:03Speaker 2: a punt gun, signed trivia board games, uh dinosaur bone
- 9:07Speaker 2: jewelry and mammoth bone jewelry that was made by my wife.
- 9:10Speaker 2: A box of rocks, fossils and gemstones from my personal collection,
- 9:14Speaker 2: and much much more. It's all happening right now at
- 9:16Speaker 2: the medeater dot com slash auction. The bidding ends in
- 9:20Speaker 2: two weeks, all right. The Shelby Index for today is
- 9:23Speaker 2: a four, so our winners should get eight correct answers,
- 9:26Speaker 2: and with that we're onto the game of I need
- 9:35Speaker 2: to know what I stand to win everything.
- 9:39Speaker 7: That's it just tend to win everything.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Demon Suckers Question one. The topic is conservation. This is
- 9:52Speaker 2: our listener question of the Week, which was won by
- 9:55Speaker 2: Logan leather Row. For sending this great question, Logan is
- 9:58Speaker 2: going to get a one hundred and fifty dollars first
- 10:00Speaker 2: gift card. If you want a chance to win the
- 10:01Speaker 2: listener Question of the Week, then send your question to
- 10:04Speaker 2: Trivia at the mediater dot com.
- 10:06Speaker 7: Right.
- 10:06Speaker 2: The topic is conservation. This is multiple choice. Besides the
- 10:10Speaker 2: word department, what is the most commonly used word in
- 10:14Speaker 2: the name of each state's game agency? Is it resources, fish, conservation,
- 10:23Speaker 2: or wildlife? So it's besides the words department, the and
- 10:29Speaker 2: and those are one, two, and three. We're looking for
- 10:32Speaker 2: fourth place. What is the most commonly used word in
- 10:36Speaker 2: the name of each state's game agency? Is it resources, fish, conservation,
- 10:45Speaker 2: or wildlife. It's a great question, that's why it's our
- 10:52Speaker 2: listener question of the week. So department, the and and
- 10:56Speaker 2: are one, two and three. We're looking for fourth What
- 10:59Speaker 2: is the most commonly used word in the name of
- 11:01Speaker 2: each state game agency resources, fish, conservation, wildlife. Yeah, I
- 11:14Speaker 2: know how you doing. I know he's got his USA
- 11:17Speaker 2: shirt on today. Is that your go to us A shirt? Yeah?
- 11:22Speaker 3: It's my fourth of July outfit.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Okay, I'm still rocking around.
- 11:27Speaker 5: My kids made it. Well, yeah, because the US of
- 11:30Speaker 5: A is playing Belgium and figured where the.
- 11:34Speaker 7: Colors with their full roster? Who?
- 11:39Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 11:41Speaker 2: Is everybody ready?
- 11:42Speaker 3: I'm not. I'm not ready.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Still thinking is it resources, fish, conservation or wildlife?
- 11:51Speaker 7: I feel like we got good vibes in the room today.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Okay, what do you think about that?
- 11:56Speaker 4: Brody?
- 11:57Speaker 1: We for who vibes for everyone?
- 12:01Speaker 3: Just generally, it's.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Good that you feel that way.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Waiting on Yanni, well see if you feel that way.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Six or seven questions from.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Probably not go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 12:12Speaker 2: Yannis saying fish, Sarah fish, Randall's fishy wildlife, Nate Resources,
- 12:20Speaker 2: Brodie wildlife. The correct answer is wildlife. I think we
- 12:27Speaker 2: had two of our six players get that one. After
- 12:30Speaker 2: the words department, to the and and The most commonly
- 12:33Speaker 2: used word for state game agencies is wildlife, which appears
- 12:37Speaker 2: in thirty two of fifty states. That's followed by the
- 12:41Speaker 2: word natural twenty four times, resources twenty one, fish nineteen,
- 12:47Speaker 2: game fourteen, and conservation five. California is the most recent
- 12:53Speaker 2: stay to add the word wildlife to their name, going
- 12:56Speaker 2: from the California Department of Fish and Game to the
- 12:59Speaker 2: California Apartment of Fish and Wildlife in twenty thirteen.
- 13:03Speaker 7: Fish.
- 13:04Speaker 2: They had fish, then they added wildlife.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Sarah thought about the game versus wildlife thing.
- 13:10Speaker 9: That was kind of what I was going through my
- 13:11Speaker 9: head when I picked fish.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Yeah, thirty two of fifty states have the word wildlife
- 13:16Speaker 2: in their name. Question two the topic is fishing. This
- 13:20Speaker 2: next great question is via Pam Corwin. This appropriately named fish,
- 13:25Speaker 2: which resembles a dolly Varden is the northernmost freshwater fish
- 13:30Speaker 2: in the world.
- 13:33Speaker 7: Fucket list, I don't know anything that is.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Asking, okay, Sarah Brody Randall All quick to answer. This
- 13:41Speaker 2: appropriately named fish, which resembles a Dolly Varden, is the
- 13:45Speaker 2: northernmost freshwater fish in the world.
- 13:48Speaker 7: I wish I knew what a dolly varden is.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Well after, it's a character from a Dickens novel. Oh,
- 13:54Speaker 2: we will show you a picture of a dolly varden.
- 13:56Speaker 2: And this fish there should be a I'm not gonna talk. Okay,
- 14:03Speaker 2: this is question two. This appropriately named fish, which resembles
- 14:07Speaker 2: a Dolly Varden, is the northernmost freshwater fish in the world. Randall,
- 14:11Speaker 2: have you ever caught one of these? Uh?
- 14:14Speaker 4: No?
- 14:15Speaker 2: No, okay, well for six in.
- 14:16Speaker 4: This caught some dollies? Phil, would you look up? Is
- 14:19Speaker 4: it David Copperfield?
- 14:21Speaker 3: Sure, I'll get right on that, please the book.
- 14:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm trying to remember where Dolly Varden.
- 14:27Speaker 2: I didn't know that that's where that came from.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, that's trivia.
- 14:32Speaker 10: That is from Charles Dickens's eighteen forty one historical novel
- 14:36Speaker 10: Barnaby Rudge.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Oh okay, trivia, it's wrong trivia.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Yeah, well it's it's from a Dickens novel.
- 14:44Speaker 3: It is you got?
- 14:45Speaker 10: That was a good pull to half point Shelby, which
- 14:50Speaker 10: resembles a Dolly Varden.
- 14:51Speaker 1: And it's tough being angler.
- 14:57Speaker 7: To become an adult on angler, dude, it's not.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Well, you have a strike against you since you don't
- 15:03Speaker 2: drink beer and eates and that's a crucial part.
- 15:05Speaker 3: No, it's not.
- 15:06Speaker 2: It's the adult angler. Not if you want to be
- 15:09Speaker 2: a good adult Anglers Randall said he couldn't go with him.
- 15:14Speaker 2: He didn't.
- 15:14Speaker 7: I didn't say that, Brodie.
- 15:17Speaker 4: He wouldn't want to go with me.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Probably like six, is everybody ready, go ahead and reveal
- 15:25Speaker 2: your answers?
- 15:27Speaker 1: Uh?
- 15:28Speaker 2: Weara and Randall's saying Arctic char. Corey says bull trout.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Brody and Nate say Arctic charge. Let's go correct answer
- 15:40Speaker 2: is the Arctic char? Well done?
- 15:41Speaker 3: You're in the same fly fishing guy.
- 15:43Speaker 9: Eh, I never seen an Arctic char.
- 15:48Speaker 6: The US the same damn thing. I thought they were
- 15:51Speaker 6: the same thing, Dolly's bull trout.
- 15:54Speaker 4: I bet the flavor text will tell us.
- 15:56Speaker 2: The northern most population of Arctic char is found on
- 16:00Speaker 2: Ellesmere Island, which is about four hundred miles from the
- 16:03Speaker 2: North Pole. Their southernmost native population is main. Arctic char
- 16:08Speaker 2: have a slow metabolism that makes them well suited to
- 16:11Speaker 2: live in places with low nutrients and long winters. There's
- 16:14Speaker 2: a picture of you showing the difference between run Arctic
- 16:21Speaker 2: that looks evidence. They also looks as sea run.
- 16:29Speaker 7: Okay.
- 16:31Speaker 2: The Arctic char has a wide variance of colors that
- 16:34Speaker 2: they produce. This one is more than the plan silver side.
- 16:38Speaker 2: But they can they can produce some real good color.
- 16:42Speaker 2: All right, well Phil looks that up. We'll move on
- 16:45Speaker 2: to question.
- 16:45Speaker 6: This man the sea run suckers get a big green, beautiful.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Chary Arctic chart can look like a lot of different
- 16:53Speaker 2: salmonid species at different points in their development. Question three,
- 16:57Speaker 2: the topic is hunting.
- 16:57Speaker 1: We'll get back to that.
- 16:59Speaker 2: In sport clays, the discs that erratically roll and bounce
- 17:03Speaker 2: across the ground are named after this animal. Sarah and
- 17:10Speaker 2: Nate Brodie Randall all quick to answer.
- 17:14Speaker 3: They suck to hit, Sarah Donne.
- 17:16Speaker 7: Sarah signed up for a sporting clays tournament.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Okay, now do you shoot these in sporting clays or not? Yeah?
- 17:24Speaker 1: Yeah, there's some stations.
- 17:25Speaker 2: That not every station, But and do you think these
- 17:28Speaker 2: are out of these rank among the hardest to hit.
- 17:31Speaker 3: They're hard to hit hard because they bounce ra.
- 17:36Speaker 9: Some courses will set them intentionally, so they kick up
- 17:39Speaker 9: and you have to make sure there's some rocks or
- 17:42Speaker 9: tree roots around it make contact with.
- 17:45Speaker 2: In sporting clays, the discs that erratically roll and bounce
- 17:48Speaker 2: across the ground are named after this animal. Is everybody
- 17:51Speaker 2: ready go ahead and reveal your answers. We have the
- 17:55Speaker 2: whole room saying rabbit, except Corey, who says pigeon. The
- 17:59Speaker 2: correct answer is rabbit or bunny. I've seen them called
- 18:04Speaker 2: bunny clays as well. Rabbit clays are about the same
- 18:07Speaker 2: size as clay pigeons, but have heavier reinforced edges. They
- 18:12Speaker 2: change speeds as they hop across the ground, making them
- 18:15Speaker 2: a challenge hit. The National Shooting Sports Foundation says these
- 18:19Speaker 2: clays are about the same speed as others, but appear
- 18:22Speaker 2: faster because of their movement against a background.
- 18:25Speaker 3: Is this your sea run Arctic chart? I don't know
- 18:29Speaker 3: who that man is.
- 18:30Speaker 2: That thing out there, I don't know what that was,
- 18:32Speaker 2: but that's an The other one was not running into
- 18:34Speaker 2: the sea. That was just a sad not that one.
- 18:39Speaker 9: The trick for those rabbits just to aim for the
- 18:41Speaker 9: front foot. It's a clay, it's round, but you have
- 18:44Speaker 9: to think about hitting the front foot. It gets your
- 18:47Speaker 9: eyes on the right spot.
- 18:48Speaker 1: I just closed my eyes.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Question for the topic is wildlife. A mermaid's blank is
- 18:57Speaker 2: the common name for the leathery egg case laid by
- 19:01Speaker 2: sharks and skates. Brody very quick to answer, Randall joins me.
- 19:07Speaker 2: A mermaid's blank is the common name for the leathery
- 19:12Speaker 2: egg case laid by sharks and skates. Yanni, do you
- 19:19Speaker 2: have this one right?
- 19:20Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 19:21Speaker 5: I got a good guess. I'm not gonna say that.
- 19:23Speaker 5: I think one of the very first animals that I
- 19:25Speaker 5: killed on a hunt was a rabbit be a shotgun,
- 19:29Speaker 5: and I can still remember just being so surprised, Like
- 19:34Speaker 5: I remember, I can still vividly remember like the shot,
- 19:36Speaker 5: like cutting the dirt and that rabbit going from run
- 19:40Speaker 5: to like a little bit of a skid and then
- 19:42Speaker 5: a stop and just.
- 19:42Speaker 8: Being like holy shit, like it all worked, you know,
- 19:46Speaker 8: I feel whatever I hit a clay?
- 19:51Speaker 2: Are there, Sarah? Are the rabbits? Are they always coming
- 19:53Speaker 2: across you? Were they ever like going away from you?
- 19:56Speaker 9: They're never going straight away. They're typically always crossing, but
- 20:00Speaker 9: sometimes they'll kind of cross away.
- 20:01Speaker 4: And I had no idea those existed.
- 20:05Speaker 9: Yeah, they suck, clearly.
- 20:09Speaker 2: A mermaid's blank is the common name for the leathery
- 20:13Speaker 2: egg case laid by sharks and skates.
- 20:16Speaker 3: Mm, we have some of these?
- 20:19Speaker 2: You have some of these?
- 20:20Speaker 3: I think, so, oh, I'm so jealous.
- 20:22Speaker 2: I'd like, wow, yeah.
- 20:23Speaker 3: I'll dig one up. I'll give you something. They always
- 20:26Speaker 3: pick them up on the beach. In North Carolina.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Your first answer should be first aspiring beach.
- 20:32Speaker 2: Whenever I'm on the coast. Now I'm always bringing home trash.
- 20:35Speaker 2: It's like the rock hound forager in me. Oh yeah,
- 20:38Speaker 2: have not found one of these.
- 20:39Speaker 3: You should go sharks to Jennifer.
- 20:42Speaker 4: Oh that's funny.
- 20:43Speaker 3: She came home with hundreds due.
- 20:46Speaker 7: I found two hundred and nine in my last batch. Damn, yes, smoked,
- 20:50Speaker 7: my brother sucking extra jealous. Give it what state Maryland? Well,
- 20:54Speaker 7: Virginia actually, but same time.
- 20:56Speaker 3: You get any big ones.
- 20:57Speaker 7: They found a great white, but it like it depends
- 20:59Speaker 7: on what you mean by big. He was like that big,
- 21:02Speaker 7: that's a big tooth. But people are thinking mag teeth,
- 21:04Speaker 7: you know, yeah, smaller.
- 21:06Speaker 5: The ones that are like, we get some quarter sized
- 21:08Speaker 5: ones too. But yeah, our buddy Parker Hall, he always
- 21:11Speaker 5: sends me pictures of one size of his palm.
- 21:13Speaker 7: Oh that's the dream, dude.
- 21:15Speaker 8: Damns, everybody read.
- 21:18Speaker 2: A mermaid's blank is the common name for the leathery
- 21:22Speaker 2: case egg or the leathery egg case laid by sharks
- 21:25Speaker 2: and skates. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Yanni says purse,
- 21:29Speaker 2: Sarah says tail Randal purse Cory scale, Nate tail Brody purse.
- 21:37Speaker 2: The correct answer is a mermaid's purse bomber, although sizes
- 21:42Speaker 2: and shapes vary. A typical mermaids purse is rectangular with
- 21:46Speaker 2: distinct horns. The pouch is made of tough collagen that
- 21:49Speaker 2: shields the baby from the outside world. Only about thirty
- 21:53Speaker 2: percent of sharks pieces producing mermaid's purse. The empty pouches
- 21:57Speaker 2: will wash up on beaches, with coastal lore saying that
- 22:00Speaker 2: finding one is a sign of wealth, good luck, and
- 22:03Speaker 2: blessings from the sea.
- 22:05Speaker 3: There you go.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Ye, I'm doing so good, wealth, good luck and see blessings.
- 22:12Speaker 3: Great.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm still I'm.
- 22:13Speaker 7: Still enjoying myself.
- 22:14Speaker 2: You've got arctic charge. You can't.
- 22:17Speaker 7: I could get the rest wrong, and.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Money can't buy that. Nate did in an arctic charge.
- 22:23Speaker 2: We're looking at a mermaid's person now. Question five, the
- 22:28Speaker 2: topic is cooking. Martha Stewart says, quote, it's abrasive and
- 22:34Speaker 2: can lift stubborn grime when talking about this soap alternative
- 22:39Speaker 2: for cleaning cast iron. That's how Martha Stewart described it.
- 22:46Speaker 2: It's abrasive and can lift stubborn grime. When talking about
- 22:50Speaker 2: this soap alternative for cleaning cast iron. Brody came up
- 22:56Speaker 2: with an answer. Brody, do you think you agree with
- 22:59Speaker 2: Martha Stewart? It's not sure.
- 23:03Speaker 7: That's my point. I thought your questions are really good.
- 23:05Speaker 7: This one's not so good.
- 23:06Speaker 9: This might ruffle some feathers. But the whole soap and
- 23:10Speaker 9: cast iron thing only really applies to old cast iron,
- 23:13Speaker 9: and you can use soap on newcast iron.
- 23:15Speaker 2: If you look at Lodge's website, when they tell you
- 23:18Speaker 2: how to clean cast iron, they tell you to use soap. Yeah,
- 23:21Speaker 2: it was.
- 23:22Speaker 9: The like the older soaps what they had lie on them,
- 23:25Speaker 9: and it like ate away cast iron.
- 23:27Speaker 2: It still feels naughty. I respect the tradition. I don't
- 23:30Speaker 2: use soap. I do like Martha Stewart's advice here. Martha
- 23:35Speaker 2: Stewart says it's abrasive and can lift stubborn grime. When
- 23:40Speaker 2: talking about this soap alternative for cleaning cast iron. Hmmm, Randall,
- 23:48Speaker 2: do you think you have this one?
- 23:51Speaker 4: Nope, I have an abrasive substance.
- 23:54Speaker 2: It's a lot of those, Brod. He's going back to
- 23:57Speaker 2: his whiteboard after he declared that he wasn't going to
- 23:59Speaker 2: change answer. Johnnie Corey coming up with their answer, Yanni,
- 24:08Speaker 2: are you ready go ahead and reveal answers you have,
- 24:13Speaker 2: Yanni saying salt, Sarah salt, Randall's baking soda, Corey Sand,
- 24:19Speaker 2: Nate salt, Brody salt. The correct answer is salt.
- 24:23Speaker 7: Nice between that and chain mail.
- 24:28Speaker 2: According to Martha Stewart, it's best to just clean cast
- 24:31Speaker 2: iron with hot water, and if the build up is bad,
- 24:34Speaker 2: reach for salt. The recommended process is to heat the
- 24:37Speaker 2: cast iron on a stove for a few minutes, then
- 24:40Speaker 2: apply a couple teaspoons of salt and scrub it in.
- 24:42Speaker 2: After that you can rinse the pan and re season
- 24:45Speaker 2: the cast iron.
- 24:46Speaker 1: I'm gonna try it. I've never tried it.
- 24:47Speaker 2: I've used the salt and it got rid of some
- 24:49Speaker 2: rust for me, so it's worth a shot.
- 24:52Speaker 9: Get like the diamond or the Morton's kosher really really coarse.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I have boxes of that stuff in our house.
- 25:00Speaker 9: I prefer diamond, but.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Randall, I think there are people who do use baking.
- 25:05Speaker 4: I bet there are.
- 25:06Speaker 8: But seemed like a great answer, Martha Stewart, recurring and
- 25:10Speaker 8: sand works great if you're not in the kitchen.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Yeah. As a fishing guide, you've done that on the
- 25:17Speaker 2: side of the river before my Arctic char fishing guide fell.
- 25:21Speaker 2: We're halfway through the game of trivia. Give us a
- 25:23Speaker 2: scoreboard update.
- 25:27Speaker 10: You're in halftime, Corey falling way behind.
- 25:30Speaker 3: He's got one point.
- 25:31Speaker 2: I think I'm elsewhere mentally at the moment.
- 25:33Speaker 7: You just like it.
- 25:34Speaker 10: We've got Sarah Randall and Nate three points apiece. Janis
- 25:37Speaker 10: boutell Us has four in second place and with a
- 25:40Speaker 10: perfect game.
- 25:42Speaker 3: Yes, it's proty.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Wow.
- 25:45Speaker 5: Probably isn't even paying attention as you call off his positioning.
- 25:49Speaker 3: He knew, Yeah, he roll in.
- 25:51Speaker 2: The perfect game.
- 25:53Speaker 1: What's the age stand for?
- 25:54Speaker 7: Adult on set hunter?
- 25:55Speaker 1: Oh?
- 25:58Speaker 3: That question.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Question six? The topic is hunting. This next great question
- 26:03Speaker 2: is via Ben Ladage. Irene Bedard stops mel Gibson from
- 26:09Speaker 2: shooting a bear in this nineteen ninety five Oscar winning Disney.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Film, and the room is stumped.
- 26:18Speaker 2: They are stumped. Irene Bedard stops mel Gibson from shooting
- 26:22Speaker 2: a bear in this nineteen ninety five Oscar winning Disney film. Phil,
- 26:27Speaker 2: do you think you would have gotten this one right
- 26:29Speaker 2: as we have six players sitting here with blank whiteboards?
- 26:32Speaker 10: Well, I almost When Yanny said the room is stumped.
- 26:34Speaker 10: I almost piped in with not the whole room.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Not the guy looking at the answer. Hey, Irene Bedard
- 26:42Speaker 2: stops Mel Gibson from shooting a bear in this nineteen
- 26:47Speaker 2: ninety five Oscar winning Disney film. That's all you need
- 26:52Speaker 2: to know in the question what could it be? The
- 26:54Speaker 2: answer told you two of the actors the year Fromney
- 27:00Speaker 2: and it won two Oscars. How about that, jez m
- 27:07Speaker 2: Is it a cartoon?
- 27:10Speaker 4: Sarah?
- 27:10Speaker 2: Do you like your answer? Eh? Maybe, I don't know.
- 27:15Speaker 2: I couldn't tell you.
- 27:16Speaker 8: Oh I should know this, but I've tried to wipe
- 27:19Speaker 8: mel Gibson out of my brain.
- 27:21Speaker 4: It's too problematic.
- 27:23Speaker 9: He's probably not Braveheart.
- 27:26Speaker 7: No, I know, Help, I don't think that was an
- 27:30Speaker 7: Disney click anyway.
- 27:31Speaker 3: No, it was probably the same era as Brave Heart.
- 27:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so. Pretty probably close.
- 27:38Speaker 4: Sometime between.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Give us a clue, Lethal weapon game for Brody. Irene
- 27:47Speaker 2: Badard stops Mel Gibson from shooting a bear in this
- 27:51Speaker 2: nineteen ninety five Oscar winning Disney film.
- 27:54Speaker 1: This would have been like Lethal Weapon three or four?
- 28:01Speaker 4: Yeah, somewhere in there.
- 28:02Speaker 2: How old were you made in nineteen ninety five? Like
- 28:04Speaker 2: negative three ninety five?
- 28:06Speaker 7: Yeah, oh one one, okay, no, negative one.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Do you know who Mel Gibson is?
- 28:12Speaker 7: Yeah, dude, his star. Two of my favorite movies.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Whoa Okay, have did?
- 28:18Speaker 7: Brave Heart and The Patriot?
- 28:20Speaker 3: Okay, what's the first one?
- 28:22Speaker 7: Brave Heart?
- 28:26Speaker 2: Janni's got a blank whiteboard? Random do I do? But
- 28:30Speaker 2: I don't like it? Wow?
- 28:33Speaker 1: I don't like mine either.
- 28:34Speaker 2: M hmm.
- 28:36Speaker 1: I just have a feeling that.
- 28:37Speaker 6: That Disney is in there for a reason and I
- 28:39Speaker 6: can't figure out why.
- 28:40Speaker 2: Wow, Randall, Yanni, you boys give up? Yeah, yep, I'm
- 28:48Speaker 2: not gonna come up with the nineteen ninety five Oscar
- 28:51Speaker 2: winning Disney film Random Chance.
- 28:56Speaker 3: I must have no, no, no, no, I didn't do anything.
- 28:59Speaker 7: What are you talking about?
- 29:01Speaker 2: I don't think Nate saw anything.
- 29:02Speaker 3: I must have been in this movie.
- 29:06Speaker 2: You give up? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Yanni
- 29:09Speaker 2: without an answer, Sarah on the range, Randa without an answer.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Corey says Fox and the Hound, Nate, Davy, Crockett, and
- 29:17Speaker 2: Brody The Patriot. Nobody got it. The correct answer is Pocahontas.
- 29:23Speaker 1: It was a cartoon.
- 29:26Speaker 2: Do you think of Mel Gibson when you think of Pocahontas?
- 29:29Speaker 4: Also is it an animated film.
- 29:35Speaker 2: I don't think of colors will win Oscar winning movies being.
- 29:39Speaker 8: I don't think of like you refer to an actor
- 29:42Speaker 8: as if mel Gibson is voicing the character.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Tom was like doing a toy story question I mentioned
- 29:50Speaker 2: Tom Hanks.
- 29:51Speaker 10: If you said, Pocahontas stops Johnson.
- 29:55Speaker 7: Like, if you're I think I was a perfect Yeah, No,
- 29:58Speaker 7: I do.
- 29:58Speaker 8: I just I'm not fighting, but I do think that's irresponsible.
- 30:05Speaker 2: The scene happens during the movie's most famous song, Colors
- 30:09Speaker 2: of the Wind. The lyrics carry an environmentalist message, with
- 30:13Speaker 2: Pocahontas singing quote, you think you own whatever land you
- 30:16Speaker 2: land on the earth is just a dead thing you
- 30:18Speaker 2: can claim. But I know every rock and tree and
- 30:21Speaker 2: creature has a life, has a spirit, has a name.
- 30:24Speaker 7: It's funny because I'm real hot on Mulan, which is
- 30:26Speaker 7: similar era but not Pokehontas as much.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Okay, we'll put it on your roar. Question seven. The
- 30:32Speaker 2: topic is fishing America's thirty seventh longest river, the Trinity
- 30:38Speaker 2: River is fully located in what state?
- 30:41Speaker 7: It's like the fourth fishing question we've had.
- 30:44Speaker 2: Fish America's thirty seventh longest river the Trinity River is
- 30:50Speaker 2: fully located in As.
- 30:51Speaker 1: Soon as I heard that thirty seventh, I know.
- 30:53Speaker 2: That Brody has his answer locked in. Randall wrote something
- 31:00Speaker 2: that e's erasing.
- 31:02Speaker 3: I've never heard of this river.
- 31:06Speaker 2: America's thirty seventh longest river, The Trinity River is fully
- 31:11Speaker 2: located in what state? I think if you were real
- 31:15Speaker 2: interested in a certain type of.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Fishing, you would know this South Spencer.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Yeah, America's thirty seventh longest river. The Trinity River is
- 31:27Speaker 2: fully located in what state?
- 31:30Speaker 3: Certain kind of fishing?
- 31:32Speaker 2: Randall, do you think you have this one?
- 31:33Speaker 4: I think I have it. I'm in the neighborhood.
- 31:38Speaker 2: That's why it's such a good fishing question.
- 31:42Speaker 7: Just throw a hint out there. Why not, here's a hint.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Pick up a fishing ride once in a while.
- 31:50Speaker 7: No, absolutely not for a map that would help get good.
- 31:57Speaker 2: This is question.
- 31:57Speaker 7: Unfortunately, my river map only goes to top twenty.
- 32:02Speaker 2: Yeah, you gotta dig deep to get to thirty seven.
- 32:07Speaker 2: America's thirty seventh longest river. The Trinity River is fully
- 32:10Speaker 2: located in what state?
- 32:12Speaker 8: Charlie Crockett song, isn't it?
- 32:15Speaker 2: Uh? It could be. I wouldn't be aware of it
- 32:18Speaker 2: that could be a hint.
- 32:20Speaker 4: Phil, would you look that up just to humor me? Yeah,
- 32:24Speaker 4: thank you.
- 32:26Speaker 2: The Trinity River. That would also be like a fictional
- 32:28Speaker 2: river name that you know, you could there's probably multiple.
- 32:34Speaker 2: Is everybody ready?
- 32:36Speaker 5: No, give me a second, fifty chance, rand it is,
- 32:41Speaker 5: thank you.

- 32:46Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 32:48Speaker 4: Well. I wouldn't have let Spencer get away.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Yeah, you were clot for that ar char picture film.
- 32:53Speaker 2: Very important.
- 32:54Speaker 3: You guys are being so kind.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Johanni trying to come up with the state. Come on,
- 33:03Speaker 2: go ahead and reveal your answers. Yanni says North Carolina,
- 33:07Speaker 2: Sarah says Oregon, Randall Nevada, Cordy, California, Nate, New York,
- 33:15Speaker 2: Brody Texas. Brody got it. The answer is texasat guard.
- 33:22Speaker 2: At five hundred and six miles, the Trinity River is
- 33:25Speaker 2: the same length as the White River that flows through
- 33:28Speaker 2: South Dakota and Nebraska. The Trinity's headwaters form outside of Dallas,
- 33:32Speaker 2: with the river ending at the Gulf. The waterway is
- 33:35Speaker 2: famous for its bass catfish, and as Brody said, it's
- 33:38Speaker 2: alligator gar, big old alligator gar and the Trinity River.
- 33:41Speaker 4: Yeah. The Charlie Crockett thing should have tipped me off.
- 33:45Speaker 2: He wouldn't sing a song about Alaska or Maine.
- 33:48Speaker 4: Yeah, it's disheartening.
- 33:51Speaker 2: We are on to question eight. The topic is conservation vibes.
- 33:59Speaker 2: This political commentator said, the government is quote putting chemicals
- 34:03Speaker 2: in the water that turned the frigging frogs gay in
- 34:06Speaker 2: twenty fifteen.
- 34:09Speaker 7: This is a trivia question.
- 34:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I gotta got a real chuckle out of myself
- 34:14Speaker 2: right in this one.
- 34:15Speaker 7: I should I should just ask you before I come in.
- 34:18Speaker 7: Are there more than two fishing questions?
- 34:21Speaker 2: And then you'll know you're gonna yeah, show up or not.
- 34:24Speaker 2: This political commentator said, the government is putting chemicals in
- 34:27Speaker 2: the water that turn the friggin frogs gay in twenty fifteen.
- 34:31Speaker 7: Man, you could have if you could have done my
- 34:34Speaker 7: Napoleon dynamite faux Paul, I could have.
- 34:37Speaker 4: Yeah, t I almost did it.
- 34:41Speaker 9: On a scale of one to ten. How controversial is
- 34:43Speaker 9: this figure?
- 34:45Speaker 2: Okay, got it?
- 34:46Speaker 9: That makes me so much, so much more confident.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Brody, do you have this one right?
- 34:50Speaker 7: Oh?
- 34:51Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 34:51Speaker 1: There's a lot of I feel like there's a lot

- 35:07Speaker 2: We sent them an invite to see if they can
- 35:09Speaker 2: come and talk about this. The quote is putting chemicals
- 35:13Speaker 2: in the water that turned the freaking frogs gay. That
- 35:16Speaker 2: was said in twenty fifteen.
- 35:18Speaker 7: Oh what chemicals? Probably florid.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Mhm, Sarah, do you have this one?
- 35:26Speaker 7: I gotta tell you about my convo with the dentist.
- 35:29Speaker 2: Mm hm.
- 35:30Speaker 4: Oh yeah, save that one.
- 35:31Speaker 7: For dam We got enough dentist writing in about stuff.
- 35:36Speaker 2: It's everybody ready, go ahead and reveal your answers. Yanni
- 35:41Speaker 2: says Brett Bear, Sarah, Alex Jones, Randall, Alex Jones, Cory,
- 35:47Speaker 2: Sean Hannity, Nate, Alex Jones, Brody, Alex Jones. Correct answer
- 35:54Speaker 2: is Alex.
- 35:55Speaker 3: Is one of those Fox guys.
- 35:57Speaker 11: No, No, he's guy conspiracy theorist Alex Jones was referencing
- 36:09Speaker 11: animal testing that suggested a popular herbicide can cause male
- 36:13Speaker 11: frogs to become hermaphrodites.
- 36:15Speaker 2: Frogs do experience sex reversal in the wild, with biologists
- 36:18Speaker 2: saying it's a natural occurrence that can increase due to
- 36:21Speaker 2: warm temperatures and exposure to herbicides, pharmaceuticals, and road salt. Right,
- 36:28Speaker 2: Uh he was, he was right, referencing this one study
- 36:31Speaker 2: that was hard to reproduce. It was done in a lab.
- 36:34Speaker 2: And they do say that herbicides, pharmaceuticals, and road salts
- 36:37Speaker 2: can do it, but frogs do it on their own naturally.
- 36:41Speaker 2: Question nine, the topic is wildlife. Oh, we're gonna get
- 36:44Speaker 2: a scoreboard update from fill the in.
