- 2:01Speaker 3: each county has to come up with a plan on
- 2:04Speaker 3: exactly how they plan on doing that, and they're taking

- 2:26Speaker 3: still keeping a close eye on politics in West Virginia,
- 2:29Speaker 3: is now x sing out post on access. Governor Morrissey
- 2:32Speaker 3: has fired Mike Graeney uh, the ex director of the
- 2:35Speaker 3: Division of Economic Development, that according to the X from
- 2:40Speaker 3: Hoppy posted about thirteen minutes or so ago. I'm sure
- 2:42Speaker 3: that mister Wilson will get into that more on Talkline
- 2:46Speaker 3: coming up at ten oh six no TJ this week.
- 2:49Speaker 3: As he is on vacation somewhere at this hour, he's
- 2:52Speaker 3: already on a golf course, I promise you.
- 2:54Speaker 6: But JB.
- 2:55Speaker 3: McCuskey not on a golf course. He's working somewhere. The
- 2:57Speaker 3: Attorney General joined us. Now, good morning and welcome to
- 3:01Speaker 3: the show.
- 3:01Speaker 7: Sir, Hey, good morning. I'm actually on my way home
- 3:04Speaker 7: from Pittsburgh, there was an awesome AI Energy summit here
- 3:12Speaker 7: with Senator Dave McCormick and Senator John Fetterman. They are
- 3:16Speaker 7: announcing one hundred billion dollars worth of new investments into
- 3:22Speaker 7: the western Pennsylvania region, which I'm certain will lead into
- 3:28Speaker 7: West Virginia. It was a really great event.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I read something about that earlier, mister
- 3:34Speaker 3: A g And of course, you know Governor Morrisey talked
- 3:37Speaker 3: about this backyard brawl, if you will, not the athletic
- 3:40Speaker 3: kind of this other kind that trying to get an advantage.
- 3:43Speaker 3: So hopefully with this announcement coming out of Pennsylvania, that will,
- 3:46Speaker 3: as you said, trickle down to West Virginia as well.
- 3:50Speaker 7: Well, yeah, and it really is. Senator McCormick and Senator
- 3:53Speaker 7: Fetterman when they're together, are really a great I wish
- 3:59Speaker 7: all of our politics like those two guys, because they're
- 4:02Speaker 7: obviously diametrically opposed on a lot of things, but they're
- 4:05Speaker 7: really good friends, and their wives are really good friends,
- 4:08Speaker 7: and they hang out and they're cordial, and they work
- 4:11Speaker 7: together to make Pennsylvania better on the issues that they
- 4:16Speaker 7: do agree on. It and it's it's really great to see.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Actually, what a novel approach, JBI, What a.
- 4:23Speaker 7: Novel approach John Senator Fetterman is very tall. I hadn't
- 4:28Speaker 7: met him before I got to meet him last night,
- 4:30Speaker 7: and I think I came up just about to his
- 4:32Speaker 7: belly button.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Okay, So what came out of this? I mean you
- 4:36Speaker 3: said it was a great conference. What sort of announcements
- 4:39Speaker 3: came out of this out of Pennsylvania with mister Fetterman
- 4:42Speaker 3: and mister McCormick.
- 4:44Speaker 7: So it's all basically related to AI and the idea
- 4:47Speaker 7: here is that Pennsylvania is going to sort of become
- 4:53Speaker 7: a leader in the confluence of fossil fuels and AI.
- 4:59Speaker 7: And you know, the ass is going to be coming
- 5:01Speaker 7: from West Virginia. Nicole is going to be coming from
- 5:03Speaker 7: West Virginia. It's going to be coming from Pennsylvania too.
- 5:05Speaker 7: But what they're really doing, and the thing that we
- 5:07Speaker 7: need to emulate in West Virginia is they're leveraging their
- 5:11Speaker 7: research universities here in Pittsburgh and they are using Carnegie,
- 5:16Speaker 7: Mellon and pitt et cetera as sort of the jumping
- 5:20Speaker 7: off points to sort of find this idea that we
- 5:24Speaker 7: need way more electricity and we need it for AI
- 5:28Speaker 7: and the binding agent is sort of the research universities,
- 5:32Speaker 7: which WU is at least as good, if not better
- 5:37Speaker 7: than both those places. So I would really hope that
- 5:39Speaker 7: we have a future in.
- 5:43Speaker 3: This as well. Spoken like a true WV. You gad,
- 5:45Speaker 3: that's what we love about. Attorney General JB. Mccuskey's here.
- 5:48Speaker 3: I want to talk to you about these Save Women's
- 5:50Speaker 3: Sports Act. It was announced earlier this month that the
- 5:53Speaker 3: US Supreme Court has agreed to hear the State of
- 5:55Speaker 3: West Virginia in this case. Explain the case and why
- 5:58Speaker 3: it's so important.
- 6:00Speaker 7: Yeah, So, West Virginia's legislature passed a bill that made
- 6:07Speaker 7: it so that biological boys were no longer allowed to
- 6:10Speaker 7: play sports against biological girls. And this makes sense, right,
- 6:14Speaker 7: This is a common sense piece of legislation. It was
- 6:17Speaker 7: challenged and the Fourth Circuit determined that the law was
- 6:20Speaker 7: violative of the Constitution and Title nine. We have challenged
- 6:25Speaker 7: the Fourth Circuit's ruling and the Supreme Court has agreed
- 6:28Speaker 7: to hear our arguments as to why West Virginia's law, which,
- 6:33Speaker 7: like I said before, ensures that people with the same
- 6:36Speaker 7: physical biological characteristics are playing sports against each other is
- 6:42Speaker 7: legal and constitutional, and we are really really excited to
- 6:46Speaker 7: get our law back on the books and to win
- 6:49Speaker 7: this case at Supreme Court.
- 6:50Speaker 3: And this is getting national attention, as you said, with
- 6:54Speaker 3: it being the Supreme Court, this is I mean a
- 6:56Speaker 3: lot of other states are taking a look at what
- 6:58Speaker 3: West Virginia's doing in this are reign at no pun intended.
- 7:03Speaker 7: Yeah, well done there, and a great segue by the way,
- 7:06Speaker 7: But yeah, it is getting national attention. And I think
- 7:10Speaker 7: the reason it's getting national attention is you see places
- 7:12Speaker 7: like the University of Pennsylvania, right, these are known northeastern
- 7:17Speaker 7: liberal colleges. Right, has gone back and awarded medals to
- 7:23Speaker 7: all of the biological females that were swimming against a
- 7:27Speaker 7: biological male. And what people are starting to see is
- 7:30Speaker 7: that this is a common sense policy. It is about fairness.
- 7:33Speaker 7: It's about ensuring that our girls and our women in
- 7:36Speaker 7: West Virginia have stage and fair playing fields to showcase
- 7:41Speaker 7: their talents. Right, They're waking up every day, like we've
- 7:43Speaker 7: talked about before, preparing for a season in a sport,
- 7:47Speaker 7: and they want to be able to play against people
- 7:49Speaker 7: that share their same biological characteristics. And I think that
- 7:53Speaker 7: makes sense, and our arguments are very very strong in
- 7:57Speaker 7: favor of West Virginia.
- 7:58Speaker 6: Is built Todd.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Again with the journeyeral.
- 8:00Speaker 6: JB.
- 8:00Speaker 3: McCuskey reminded the vaccines or your rest protections agains severe
- 8:03Speaker 3: disease from flu in COVID nineteen if you're sixty five,
- 8:06Speaker 3: for older risk less, do more with the season's vaccines.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Get started Vaccines dot gov paid for by the US
- 8:11Speaker 3: Department of Health and Human Services. I haven't heard the
- 8:13Speaker 3: term liperatur in a while, but there's a case out
- 8:16Speaker 3: there and the deadline is approaching, JB. In this liperaturre case,
- 8:22Speaker 3: what's the story here?
- 8:24Speaker 7: Lipatur? You mean the anti the one that's supposed to
- 8:29Speaker 7: help your heart correct. Yes, yes, yeah, lipatur. So that
- 8:34Speaker 7: is a that's the case that was filed by Patrick Morrissey,
- 8:38Speaker 7: and I believe Doug Buffington was really, really instrumental in
- 8:42Speaker 7: that case before I got into the AG's office, and
- 8:46Speaker 7: they won a settlement against the makers of liipatur. And
- 8:50Speaker 7: if you're somebody in West Virginia who has paid too
- 8:53Speaker 7: much for your liperatur, you will be owed some money.
- 8:56Speaker 3: And there's a deadline. I think that's approaching in that case.
- 9:00Speaker 3: That's why that's that's why I wanted to bring that up. Well,
- 9:03Speaker 3: you're driving right now, I week, Okay, I think you're right.
- 9:08Speaker 7: If you're somebody who's interested, please call the Attorney General's office.
- 9:13Speaker 7: One of our staff members will be more than happy
- 9:15Speaker 7: to get you all the information you need to be
- 9:17Speaker 7: part of that.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:18Speaker 3: I do think you're right. I think the of the
- 9:20Speaker 3: deadline is is this week. I want to go back
- 9:23Speaker 3: to the Supreme Court for a moment your office issue
- 9:25Speaker 3: to statement hailing this landmark uh Supreme Court decision ending
- 9:30Speaker 3: what's known as universal universal universal injunctions. Just you just
- 9:37Speaker 3: keep driving, let me talk.
- 9:39Speaker 4: Uh uh.
- 9:41Speaker 3: It ended these universal injunctions that block certain government policies
- 9:46Speaker 3: across the nation. Universal injunctions. I mean, when when I
- 9:50Speaker 3: hear universal, I think of like Neptune in Mars. But
- 9:53Speaker 3: that's just me, you know, thinking outside the box here
- 9:55Speaker 3: a little bit. But but explain why this is an issue,
- 9:58Speaker 3: these universal injunctions in your opinion.
- 10:01Speaker 7: So it's actually funny you said it that way. There's
- 10:03Speaker 7: a lot of district court judges in this country right
- 10:05Speaker 7: now who think that they can issue rulings that apply
- 10:08Speaker 7: to Neptune and so what this is that district court
- 10:13Speaker 7: judges were stepping far outside of their authority, and they
- 10:18Speaker 7: were making rulings that applied to the entire country as
- 10:21Speaker 7: opposed to the people that were in front of them
- 10:23Speaker 7: in their courtroom. And sort of simply, district court judges
- 10:28Speaker 7: can issue rulings for the parties that have brought the
- 10:31Speaker 7: cases to them, meaning the people that are actually in
- 10:35Speaker 7: the courtroom in front of them. They cannot issue rulings
- 10:38Speaker 7: for people that aren't there. That is the job of
- 10:40Speaker 7: the United States Supreme Court. And we drafted an amicus
- 10:45Speaker 7: brief in that case. And what's really great is that
- 10:49Speaker 7: a lot of our language was used by Justice Comy
- 10:52Speaker 7: Barrett in issuing her ruling, saying that these judges have
- 10:56Speaker 7: overstepped their bounds, and the proper way to find something
- 11:02Speaker 7: either unconstitutional or constitutional for the entire country is through
- 11:06Speaker 7: the normal procedure, which is district court, circuit court, Supreme Court.
- 11:11Speaker 7: And that was a huge win for the rule of law.
- 11:14Speaker 7: It's a huge win for our court systems in general,
- 11:18Speaker 7: because people were starting to see our district court judges
- 11:21Speaker 7: as being very very political, and our courts are nothing
- 11:24Speaker 7: if people don't trust their rulings, and this was a
- 11:28Speaker 7: really big deal. Once again West Virginia was leading the
- 11:31Speaker 7: country in making sure that the rule of law is
- 11:34Speaker 7: being followed. We were super proud of our work there
- 11:37Speaker 7: and we're looking forward to the seeing how this plays out.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Turney, General JB. Mccusky. How's the weather on your way
- 11:45Speaker 3: back here? Because we've been battling some severe storms. I
- 11:47Speaker 3: know I'm going to go down. Meteorologist JB. Mccusky, how's
- 11:51Speaker 3: the weather and your drive back from Pittsburgh.
- 11:53Speaker 7: Well, if I were if I were making fun of
- 11:55Speaker 7: my good friend Kelly Cart, what I would say is
- 11:58Speaker 7: we're on I seventy nine south and the weather is perfect,
- 12:02Speaker 7: there is no hold ups, and you're gonna have smooth
- 12:05Speaker 7: sailing all the way to mortgage out.
- 12:06Speaker 3: I will not have you making fun of Cali the Great. Okay,
- 12:09Speaker 3: just so you know.
- 12:11Speaker 7: Well I've already done it.
- 12:12Speaker 3: All right, there you go, be safe. We'll talk again.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Soue man. Thanks a lot, Thanks so much.
- 12:16Speaker 7: I'll talk to you soon.
- 12:17Speaker 2: All right.
- 12:17Speaker 3: It's Attorney General G. B. Mccusky. Yeah, I mean I
- 12:21Speaker 3: had read a little bit about that event that happened
- 12:23Speaker 3: with Federman and McCormick coup up in Pennsylvania, and I
- 12:26Speaker 3: think Wilson is going to get into that a little
- 12:28Speaker 3: bit more coming up on talk line a little bit,
- 12:31Speaker 3: a little bit later on. But you know, the governor
- 12:33Speaker 3: talked about this backyard brawl, the economic backyard brawl, and
- 12:37Speaker 3: I'm going to go ahead and say it looks like
- 12:38Speaker 3: Pennsylvania has got got a little bit of a head start.
- 12:41Speaker 3: But that's okay. And they're including West Virginia. That's why
- 12:43Speaker 3: the Attorney General was up there. So it's now it's
- 12:45Speaker 3: time for West Virginia to get involved in this as well.

- 15:35Speaker 3: it oddly enough, who played at Marshall but is playing
- 15:38Speaker 3: for his dad, who's coaching the best Virginia team. He
- 15:40Speaker 3: was on sports Line last night. I got to catch
- 15:43Speaker 3: a little bit of that interview, and I heard it
- 15:44Speaker 3: coming in again this morning on the morning news. But yeah,
- 15:47Speaker 3: we're all excited about the TV team. By the way,
- 15:49Speaker 3: I will tell you we will be broadcasting those games
- 15:51Speaker 3: on the Metro News radio network. Looking forward to listening in.
- 15:55Speaker 3: And of course that's a big deal for Charleston to
- 15:58Speaker 3: get this back. And I would be miss if I
- 16:00Speaker 3: didn't if I failed to mention that. In addition to uh,
- 16:04Speaker 3: the best Virginia team uh. And also heard that the
- 16:08Speaker 3: Marshall team, my co worker, my co host in the
- 16:11Speaker 3: afternoon Metro News Midday, Amanda Baron her alma Moter Ohio University,
- 16:16Speaker 3: the home of the Bobcats, has also got I think
- 16:18Speaker 3: the Court Street Kings. But as I mentioned earlier, you know,
- 16:21Speaker 3: being an old uh Marshall guy, it's uh uh, it's
- 16:24Speaker 3: very very difficult for uh for me to you know,
- 16:29Speaker 3: have any good feelings about Ohio University. Plus I got
- 16:31Speaker 3: a speeding ticket in Athens, Ohio. So kidding, with all
- 16:35Speaker 3: due respect to Amanda Baron and Rob Cornelia's frequent guest
- 16:39Speaker 3: on the show, just not a whole lot of love
- 16:40Speaker 3: from this guy from Ohio University being a Marshall guy.
- 16:42Speaker 3: But anyway, TBT is happening this weekend, will be telling
- 16:45Speaker 3: you more about a huge economic driver uh for the
- 16:48Speaker 3: city of Charleston and the surrounding areas. And uh uh
- 16:51Speaker 3: we will be carrying those games on the Metro News
- 16:53Speaker 3: radio network. And again Jared West scheduled to be with us,
- 16:55Speaker 3: but we're having a little trouble connecting uh with uh
- 16:59Speaker 3: with mister as well. We'll keep trying. But Dave Aland

- 17:24Speaker 3: to the program, and also a Metro News mid Day
- 17:26Speaker 3: Stephen Allen Adams of Ogden newspaper, and he was talking
- 17:30Speaker 3: about what Attorney General mccusky now we're just talking about.
- 17:34Speaker 3: And that is a this is a this is an
- 17:37Speaker 3: actual post on X from Steven Adams that Pennsylvania appears
- 17:41Speaker 3: to be winning the backyard brawl as the Trump administration
- 17:46Speaker 3: and David McCormick, that's not our David McCormick, the delegate
- 17:50Speaker 3: David McCormick from that you hear his ads on this
- 17:52Speaker 3: is this is Senator David McCormick out of Pennsylvania. And
- 17:56Speaker 3: also Fetterman as as JB alluded to Team Metri from
- 18:00Speaker 3: a seventy million dollar I'm sorry, seventy billion dollars in
- 18:04Speaker 3: Putnsylvania energy investment and the texture said, we missed that boat. Well,
- 18:09Speaker 3: not yet, not yet. We haven't missed the boat yet.
- 18:11Speaker 3: That's why I think, that's why that Attorney General mccusky
- 18:15Speaker 3: was actually in Pittsburgh. Coming up on the show tomorrow.
- 18:19Speaker 3: A good friend, Milly Snyder is going to join this
- 18:22Speaker 3: nutrition expert and now apparently she's a podcast star. I
- 18:25Speaker 3: was talking to somebody in the office earlier today that
- 18:27Speaker 3: Milly is now doing her own podcast. She's already got
- 18:30Speaker 3: one in the can. I think it'll be coming out
- 18:31Speaker 3: we dropping here real soon. We're going to talk to
- 18:33Speaker 3: her about that and plus anything else that's on the
- 18:35Speaker 3: mind of Milly Snyder coming up on the show tomorrow. Also,
- 18:38Speaker 3: there is a new acting director of the West Virginia Lottery,
- 18:41Speaker 3: David Bradley, and he is going to be on the
- 18:44Speaker 3: show coming up tomorrow as well. And I am I'm
- 18:46Speaker 3: interested in talking to mister Bradley about this. I still
- 18:49Speaker 3: don't know whether those million dollar Powerball tickets have been
- 18:54Speaker 3: claimed yet. We told you the story when he was
- 18:56Speaker 3: on Metro News Midday a couple of weeks ago that
- 18:59Speaker 3: there were two separate million dollar Powerball tickets sold here
- 19:03Speaker 3: in the Kanaw Valley. One was sold at Marty Gronc
- 19:06Speaker 3: Cassino and Resort. The other was sold at the Palmar
- 19:08Speaker 3: store on Main Street and Hurricane. And as of when
- 19:13Speaker 3: we had acting Director Bradley on the show a couple
- 19:16Speaker 3: of weeks ago, neither one of those tickets had been
- 19:19Speaker 3: claimed and they were you know, having an effort to
- 19:22Speaker 3: try to get somebody to come forward to claim what
- 19:24Speaker 3: is two million dollars two separate one million dollar tickets.
- 19:27Speaker 3: I will say this that if it were I and
- 19:34Speaker 3: I had purchased a ticket for either one of those
- 19:37Speaker 3: locations and then heard that there's a million dollar winner,
- 19:40Speaker 3: I might be trying to find that ticket. Just say, now,
- 19:43Speaker 3: somebody brought up to me that maybe it was gifted
- 19:45Speaker 3: to somebody or something to do. Somebody frequently do that
- 19:48Speaker 3: for birthdays or anniversaries, Christmas. But what ever, give you
- 19:50Speaker 3: some lottery tickets? I don't know, maybe, but I will
- 19:53Speaker 3: say this that if that were me, I probably would
- 19:56Speaker 3: have been checking. But as of the last time, and
- 20:00Speaker 3: we had the acting director of the lottery on a
- 20:01Speaker 3: couple of weeks ago, that tickets, those tickets, two separate ones,
- 20:05Speaker 3: one sold at the Palmar store on Main Street and Hurricane,
- 20:08Speaker 3: the other one was sold at Marty Gar Casino. And result,
- 20:11Speaker 3: nobody had come forward to claim those tickets. And if
- 20:13Speaker 3: nobody comes forward to claim them, they just go back.
- 20:17Speaker 3: They just go back. And wouldn't you hate to think?
- 20:21Speaker 3: I try to think what that mat or woman must
- 20:23Speaker 3: be thinking in their head right now, is that they
- 20:27Speaker 3: find out like a day after that they just lost
- 20:29Speaker 3: out on a million dollars. So somebody sent me a
- 20:37Speaker 3: pizza deal on the tax lint here. Appreciate that, But
- 20:42Speaker 3: unless there's some sort of a charitable thing in there,
- 20:45Speaker 3: considering that Husson sponsors the show, I'm probably not going
- 20:48Speaker 3: to mention one of their competitors. I do appreciate, though,
- 20:51Speaker 3: I do do really appreciate the textures in that in
- 20:55Speaker 3: there was because you know me, I'm always happy to
- 20:59Speaker 3: talk about food. Another protest downtown yesterday the office of
- 21:05Speaker 3: Senator Shelley Moore Capito. Unlike last time, there were no arrests.
- 21:09Speaker 3: Now the protesters carried in a cardboard box meant to
- 21:14Speaker 3: symbolize a coffin. And if you happen to pick up
- 21:16Speaker 3: a copy of the gazet mail this morning, you'll see
- 21:19Speaker 3: it on the front page. And they say that that
- 21:22Speaker 3: represents the people that will die because of the Reconciliation Bill,
- 21:29Speaker 3: or because of the big beautiful bill, if that's what
- 21:33Speaker 3: you prefer to call it. So there was a protest
- 21:36Speaker 3: looked like as seven eight people downtown. Unlike last time,
- 21:39Speaker 3: As I said, no arrests. Senator capitol was not in
- 21:41Speaker 3: the building. She was in DC at this point, and
- 21:46Speaker 3: I fully protest people are I fully support I should say,
- 21:50Speaker 3: people's right to peacefully protest. But it's signed, it's a law,
- 21:55Speaker 3: and at this point, I don't think there's a whole
- 21:58Speaker 3: lot that can be done about it at this point,
- 22:00Speaker 3: us or some legal wrangling or whatever, but appreciate the effort,
- 22:04Speaker 3: but it's a thing now. Also, I do want to
- 22:06Speaker 3: mention this that if you don't have any plans this
- 22:09Speaker 3: Thursday night, we're going to give you some plans, because
- 22:12Speaker 3: you're invited to a party our sister station ninety eight
- 22:16Speaker 3: seven A Mountain, Wild and Wonderful Classic Rocks, celebrating our birthday.
- 22:21Speaker 3: And Thursday is the exact day that two years ago
- 22:24Speaker 3: we launched what is known as Charleston's only full time
- 22:27Speaker 3: classic rock station, ninety eight seven A Mountain, And we
- 22:32Speaker 3: don't want to invite you to come out for this party.
- 22:34Speaker 3: It's going to be a bar, one on one on
- 22:36Speaker 3: Capitol Street, downtown Charleston. We'll start about six o'clock and
- 22:39Speaker 3: all your favorite Mountain personalities will be on hand, even
- 22:44Speaker 3: me because they let me hang out on the mountain
- 22:46Speaker 3: from time to time. Being you know, I don't do
- 22:48Speaker 3: enough with Metro News midday doing this show. Also pull
- 22:51Speaker 3: a little time over it to ninety eight seven A Mountain,
- 22:54Speaker 3: hanging out with Steve Adam on Shockley and Amy and
- 22:56Speaker 3: the two Jeffs and all that. But we're having a
- 22:58Speaker 3: party to celebrate right the second birthday of ninety eight
- 23:04Speaker 3: to seven A Mountain And we've just had a great
- 23:06Speaker 3: time with this station. If you like classic rock, it's
- 23:08Speaker 3: definitely the station you want to you want to check
- 23:11Speaker 3: out with Steve Animal in the morning. And so we'll
- 23:13Speaker 3: be a bar one on one Capitol Street in Charleston
- 23:16Speaker 3: coming up Thursday night. We're there normally a couple times
- 23:18Speaker 3: a month anyway at Bar one on one. Got a
- 23:20Speaker 3: great relationship with those folks. We're gonna have giveaways of
- 23:23Speaker 3: all kinds. We will have cake. I understand Steve Animals
- 23:27Speaker 3: done a trade out with somebody. He's done something to
- 23:29Speaker 3: get a cake, probably a two day old cake or
- 23:30Speaker 3: something like that. But we'll have a cake kind of
- 23:33Speaker 3: fitting with the whole, with the whole, with the old
- 23:37Speaker 3: attitude if you will of ninety eight to seven A Mountain.
- 23:39Speaker 3: But if you have a chance yet to check out
- 23:41Speaker 3: the station again. It's been around for a couple of years.
- 23:44Speaker 3: We're having a lot of fun weather. We brought back
- 23:46Speaker 3: one of the true icons in the world of radio,
- 23:49Speaker 3: and it's Charlie Kendall. Every Sunday night. If you like
- 23:52Speaker 3: metal music, you want to check out Metal Shops Sunday
- 23:55Speaker 3: night at seven with the iconic Charlie Kendall. And we
- 23:58Speaker 3: just have a lot of fun with the station and
- 24:00Speaker 3: we have a lot of fun with our mountain Heads,
- 24:01Speaker 3: which is what we have lovingly referred to our listeners
- 24:04Speaker 3: of the mouth. And so come on out and join us.
- 24:06Speaker 3: We will be there again on Thursday night starting at
- 24:10Speaker 3: six as we celebrate the Mountain's birthday and Steve Annibal
- 24:13Speaker 3: is going to join us on the show on Thursday
- 24:15Speaker 3: to talk more about it. Bigley, Piggy Wigglely Hotline three

- 24:40Speaker 3: will remind you TBT is going on at the Colin
- 24:42Speaker 3: SWEENMA Convention Center this coming weekend and we'll have those
- 24:45Speaker 3: games for you on the Metro News Radio Network. Ryan
- 24:48Speaker 3: Nicholson is our producer today. We'll take the break a
- 24:50Speaker 3: little bit early. When we come back, we are going
- 24:52Speaker 3: to see if we have better luck getting a hold
- 24:54Speaker 3: of Knawa County Board of Education President Rick Cavender. And
- 24:59Speaker 3: there's a lot of new surrounding the board these days,
- 25:01Speaker 3: as it proposed as it pertains to cell phones. As
- 25:05Speaker 3: you know, the governor signed the Billy talked about it
- 25:07Speaker 3: that effectively bans the use of cell phones in classrooms
- 25:11Speaker 3: or at least puts a lot of restrictions on it.
- 25:14Speaker 3: And so the board board member Kate White was on
- 25:18Speaker 3: with Meadows and Wilson on talk line talking about it
- 25:21Speaker 3: last week. They're actually asking for public comment on how
- 25:23Speaker 3: this thing is, how this whole thing is going to
- 25:25Speaker 3: play out. So Rick Cavander is going to join us
- 25:28Speaker 3: to talk about that when we come back, and again

- 28:51Speaker 3: made And, rick the governor talked about this during His
- 28:54Speaker 3: state of The state and now it's time to get to.
- 28:56Speaker 3: Plan the counties have to formulate a, plan and you're
- 28:58Speaker 3: asking now for public comment to talk about.
- 29:01Speaker 5: That, yeah just like with any other policy that we
- 29:05Speaker 5: are considering implementing in the, county this currently is out
- 29:09Speaker 5: for public. Comment it has, NOW i think it's been
- 29:11Speaker 5: out for a little bit more than a, week ten
- 29:13Speaker 5: days or. So we always want to make sure that
- 29:15Speaker 5: we get really good feedback from all of our you, know, parents, students, faculty,
- 29:20Speaker 5: members the public in, general.
- 29:23Speaker 16: So to help us best shape this policy that we
- 29:26Speaker 16: are that we have to put in place at this.
- 29:29Speaker 3: Point, now how do people go about submitting public?
- 29:33Speaker 5: COMMENT i think can go directly to our county school's.
- 29:37Speaker 5: Website it'll it'll lead you right to. IT i can
- 29:40Speaker 5: tell you that we've already received Several as a matter of,
- 29:43Speaker 5: FACT i for What i've seen so, far AND i
- 29:46Speaker 5: haven't read them. ALL i haven't read them, yet BUT
- 29:48Speaker 5: i just kind of got an update last a FEW
- 29:51Speaker 5: i would, say like late last, week and we've gotten
- 29:54Speaker 5: more on this particular topic than we've gotten for public
- 29:57Speaker 5: comment in quite a.
- 29:57Speaker 3: While, WELL i can IMAGINE i can imagine. That, Yeah uh,
- 30:02Speaker 3: SO i mean you said that you've seen some of the. Comment,
- 30:06Speaker 3: well even if it's not what's been officially on the
- 30:09Speaker 3: record as, comment what have you heard from from? Parents
- 30:11Speaker 3: because you're a parent, Yourself i'm gonna get into your situation,
- 30:14Speaker 3: here uh, momentarily but, uh, what by and large are
- 30:18Speaker 3: you hearing from people out? There you and the other board.
- 30:20Speaker 5: Members, WELL i think you, know a lot of people
- 30:24Speaker 5: will find it to be a very positive. Thing we've
- 30:27Speaker 5: obviously heard some concern from from parents in regard, to you,
- 30:31Speaker 5: know concern.
- 30:32Speaker 16: About not maybe not being able to get a hold
- 30:33Speaker 16: of their child during the day and that kind of,
- 30:35Speaker 16: thing which OBVIOUSLY i, think, uh you AND i have
- 30:38Speaker 16: discussed this, before and and Certainly i've discussed it with other.
- 30:41Speaker 16: People you, know you can always call the school if you.
- 30:43Speaker 5: Need to get a hold of your. Child they're always
- 30:46Speaker 5: available to do. That BUT i, think by and, LARGE
- 30:49Speaker 5: i think at this, point you, know we're at least
- 30:51Speaker 5: for People i'm, Taught i've talked, to they definitely see the.
- 30:53Speaker 5: Benefits and and of, course As i'm sure we'll talk
- 30:56Speaker 5: about here in a, minute we have a pilot program
- 30:58Speaker 5: At Horace man we've had for a few years that
- 31:00Speaker 5: it seemed to work really.
- 31:01Speaker 3: Well, yeah talk about that pilot program you've got going.
- 31:03Speaker 5: On, yeah you, Know So i'm actually a Horse Man
- 31:06Speaker 5: Middle school. Parent my youngest son has been using The
- 31:11Speaker 5: yonder pouches ever since he. Started he's going into his
- 31:13Speaker 5: eighth grade, year and he's had, them you, know ever
- 31:15Speaker 5: since he started At. Horseman AND i can tell you
- 31:19Speaker 5: definitely the overall as a, parent the distraction is way.
- 31:23Speaker 5: Down you, know unnecessary situations that arise when students have
- 31:30Speaker 5: their their devices all day. Long those aren't. Happening students
- 31:34Speaker 5: are actually communicating with one another at, lunchtime talking to each.
- 31:37Speaker 5: Other they're not their faces aren't buried in their. Phones
- 31:41Speaker 5: we've definitely seen a lot of benefits from. It so
- 31:43Speaker 5: as a parent At, HORSEMAN i can tell YOU i
- 31:46Speaker 5: find the limited use or no use of personal devices
- 31:52Speaker 5: during the instructional day to be very.
- 31:54Speaker 16: Beneficial so how.
- 31:55Speaker 3: Do you answer the people and you hear the age old. Question,
- 31:59Speaker 3: NO i mean this is but all over the country
- 32:00Speaker 3: you hear people, say, well what if there is a school,
- 32:02Speaker 3: Shooting god? Forbid or what if for some sort of an,
- 32:04Speaker 3: emergency my kid has to get in touch with. Me
- 32:07Speaker 3: i'm sure that and that argument is going to come
- 32:09Speaker 3: up to.
- 32:09Speaker 5: That you would, say, what, well you know we As
- 32:14Speaker 5: i'm sure you, recall we invested a lot of money
- 32:18Speaker 5: through the excess. Levee over the past two cycles of
- 32:22Speaker 5: the excess, levee we've invested a lot of money in
- 32:25Speaker 5: upgrades to. Security from many different, STANDPOINTS i think That
- 32:30Speaker 5: Kenall county probably has the best security guidelines and set.
- 32:35Speaker 5: UP i would like to think in the state Of West,
- 32:36Speaker 5: virginia and all the protocols are in place if there's
- 32:40Speaker 5: any type of, emergency all faculty is trained on what to,
- 32:43Speaker 5: do administration is trained on what to. Do we, have
- 32:47Speaker 5: as you, know we have CPOs in a lot of
- 32:49Speaker 5: the schools we. Have now we've added through the excess
- 32:52Speaker 5: levee this past, cycle we've been able to add even
- 32:55Speaker 5: more officers that are randomly in different schools every single,
- 32:59Speaker 5: day WHICH i find to be very useful and beneficial
- 33:03Speaker 5: and definitely makes our parents feel more safe sending their
- 33:06Speaker 5: kids to. SCHOOL a lot of protocols have been put
- 33:09Speaker 5: in place to ensure our student. Safety so that includes
- 33:13Speaker 5: communication with parents in.
- 33:14Speaker 7: The event of an.
- 33:15Speaker 3: Emergency talking again To Canawha County school Where President Rick
- 33:19Speaker 3: cavitt Of Dave allen showing five any live is brown
- 33:21Speaker 3: too fared By morgan And morgan if you're injured Higher
- 33:23Speaker 3: morgan And, Morgan america's largest injury law. Firm you reference
- 33:26Speaker 3: These yonder, pouches and some schools do. Those i've heard other.
- 33:31Speaker 3: People you, know other counties don't use. Them exactly how
- 33:34Speaker 3: to if that's the route that is decided, upon exactly
- 33:37Speaker 3: how do these pouches?
- 33:37Speaker 5: Work, WELL i can tell, YOU i mean right, now the.
- 33:41Speaker 5: Pouches there's a big expense that comes with these. Pouches
- 33:45Speaker 5: so for right, NOW i think you, know we're working
- 33:48Speaker 5: through this. Policy we're working to make sure that each
- 33:51Speaker 5: school has a consistent protocol in place that the phones
- 33:55Speaker 5: or the devices in general will be stowed away throughout the.
- 33:58Speaker 5: DAY i don't foresee us looking at The yonder patches right.
- 34:03Speaker 5: Now it is a significant expense and it's money we
- 34:06Speaker 5: do not have. Budgeted so you, know they've worked with
- 34:11Speaker 5: a well horseman during this pilot, program AND i would
- 34:15Speaker 5: love to find a way for us all to be
- 34:17Speaker 5: able to use them for right, now we'll be putting
- 34:19Speaker 5: other protocols in, place working with all the individual schools
- 34:21Speaker 5: to make sure that they follow the.
- 34:23Speaker 3: Policy i'm going to ask a, really really dumb question
- 34:26Speaker 3: as a non. Parent, okay so what would be wrong
- 34:31Speaker 3: with let's say the bell rings if they still do,
- 34:34Speaker 3: bells Because i'm, old you know the bell? Rings beginning
- 34:37Speaker 3: the class teacher has a giant container bucket something in
- 34:43Speaker 3: front of the classroom and they say to the, kids
- 34:45Speaker 3: all phones. Forward they put the phones in the Giant
- 34:50Speaker 3: i'm picturing like a plastic like a tote of some
- 34:52Speaker 3: sort in front of the teachers. Desks so obviously you,
- 34:55Speaker 3: know the teacher's not going through them or doing. Whatever
- 34:58Speaker 3: what would be wrong with that policy of just saying, okay,
- 35:00Speaker 3: everybody pass your phones, up or when you come into
- 35:03Speaker 3: the classroom you drop them.
- 35:04Speaker 6: In, well, SEE i.
- 35:06Speaker 5: Think that's why it's really, important AS i mentioned, earlier
- 35:08Speaker 5: that there's consistent policy across the, county because when you're
- 35:12Speaker 5: talking about a situation like, that you're eating into instructional,
- 35:14Speaker 5: time very important instructional. Time so if each classroom or each,
- 35:18Speaker 5: administration or whatever the case, is has different operational policies
- 35:23Speaker 5: and how to make sure these devices aren't in the
- 35:24Speaker 5: hands of the students throughout the, day that could eat
- 35:26Speaker 5: into a lot of really important instructional, time and it
- 35:28Speaker 5: could become. Chaos, yeah so you, know AND i understand your,
- 35:33Speaker 5: question AND i feel very confident that we have a
- 35:37Speaker 5: lot of really great, teachers a lot of great administrators
- 35:40Speaker 5: throughout the entire, county AND i feel really confident that
- 35:44Speaker 5: they're going to come up with a really good solution
- 35:46Speaker 5: once this policy is in place from school to. SCHOOL
- 35:49Speaker 5: i do want to see to that. POINT i do
- 35:51Speaker 5: want to see us be as consistent as possible across
- 35:54Speaker 5: the whole. County so one school is being treated different
- 35:56Speaker 5: than the. OTHER i find that to be really. Important
- 35:59Speaker 5: so as far as those sort of granular classroom by classroom,
- 36:03Speaker 5: operations as far as how they ensure that these students
- 36:06Speaker 5: aren't using their, devices my hope is is that it's
- 36:09Speaker 5: all handled at the administrative level and that there's one
- 36:11Speaker 5: consistent process in place for the entire, school and of
- 36:15Speaker 5: course with the entire.
- 36:16Speaker 3: County well, yeah and like you, said you, know if
- 36:18Speaker 3: you've got a kid that goes to two different, schools
- 36:19Speaker 3: there could be two completely different. Policies as you will know.
- 36:23Speaker 3: YOURSELF i Guess i'm JUST i guess Because i'm the
- 36:26Speaker 3: old guy you know that's shaking his, hand you, know
- 36:30Speaker 3: like the meme from The simpsons old man yells at.
- 36:32Speaker 3: Cloud you, know that's. Me i'm just trying to figure
- 36:34Speaker 3: out how in the nineteen seventies and nineteen AND i,
- 36:37Speaker 3: know the world's a different, PLACE i get, It but
- 36:39Speaker 3: how in the nineteen seventies and nineteen eighties we left
- 36:42Speaker 3: for school at seven or seven thirty in the, morning
- 36:44Speaker 3: had absolutely no contact with our parents all, day and
- 36:46Speaker 3: somehow managed to manage to make it just, fine and.
- 36:50Speaker 5: You ended up just find any.
- 36:52Speaker 8: Day, well now.
- 36:52Speaker 3: That's, Questionable, Rick there'd be a lot of people that
- 36:56Speaker 3: would probably question. It BUT i think another thing too
- 36:59Speaker 3: that for another. Interview, YEAH i think another thing too
- 37:01Speaker 3: that a lot of older people like myself also need
- 37:03Speaker 3: to realize is there's a quite a bit of instruction
- 37:07Speaker 3: that goes on with these with these. PHONES i, MEAN
- 37:09Speaker 3: i got a good friend whose. Kids he's got one
- 37:13Speaker 3: kid in, school one that just GRADUATED i think last
- 37:15Speaker 3: year or the year, before and they had apps on their
- 37:18Speaker 3: phone that they were required to go to Different and
- 37:20Speaker 3: again it's something you know about you're a, parent added
- 37:23Speaker 3: school board. PRESIDENT i don't know anything about, that but
- 37:25Speaker 3: but there are apps on phones that students, are uh
- 37:28Speaker 3: are are supposed to be taking a look at things
- 37:31Speaker 3: are posted various. Sites.
- 37:32Speaker 5: Right, well that's why we supply every student in the
- 37:36Speaker 5: county with an, iPad and all those apps are are
- 37:39Speaker 5: accessible on the school supplied, iPad and so you, know
- 37:44Speaker 5: and then of, course because that's sort of the epicenter
- 37:46Speaker 5: of of all of their instructional. Materials now that in
- 37:49Speaker 5: most cases as that. iPad so any app that could
- 37:52Speaker 5: be downloaded to an iPhone or to A samsung device
- 37:54Speaker 5: absolutely will need to be able.
- 37:56Speaker 16: To be downloaded to a school supplied.
- 37:58Speaker 5: iPad So i'm Not i'm not worried about.
- 37:59Speaker 3: THAT i would think, though that with the iPads you
- 38:01Speaker 3: can pretty easily control what they're allowed to. ACCESS i,
- 38:05Speaker 3: MEAN i would think social media is is a snapchat
- 38:09Speaker 3: or something like that's probably that's probably. BLOCKED i, mean
- 38:11Speaker 3: not that a kid couldn't figure it. Out but But
- 38:13Speaker 3: i'm just, saying is that that's probably the.
- 38:15Speaker 5: Case, Right we, asked we asked our technology director of
- 38:19Speaker 5: that question when we first had this discussion two meetings,
- 38:22Speaker 5: ago regarding you, know the apps that can be. Accessed
- 38:24Speaker 5: even the message is app, right BECAUSE i mean that's that's.
- 38:27Speaker 5: Texting none of that is accessible on the.
- 38:29Speaker 16: iPad that's all. Blocked.
- 38:30Speaker 5: Okay these iPads are to be used for educational, purposes.
- 38:35Speaker 3: So, okay all, Right, well the public comment period is.
- 38:37Speaker 3: Continuing as you, said you can go to The Kanaw
- 38:40Speaker 3: County ward Of education website and you're expected to have
- 38:42Speaker 3: a plan in place by the beginning of the school.
- 38:44Speaker 5: Year, Right, yes we will have a special meeting just
- 38:47Speaker 5: to discuss and vote on this. POLICY i believe In
- 38:50Speaker 5: august the eleventh Is monday of that.
- 38:52Speaker 3: Week, yeah it's to say when does school start for
- 38:54Speaker 3: students In Kannon County friday to?
- 38:56Speaker 5: Fifteen, okay so that has to be in place before
- 38:58Speaker 5: that first.
- 38:59Speaker 3: Day And i'm like, You i'm a little bit of you,
- 39:01Speaker 3: know concerned about different schools doing different. Things But i'll
- 39:05Speaker 3: be honest with, You, Reck i'm also concerned about different
- 39:06Speaker 3: teachers doing different. Things AND i brought this. Up but
- 39:10Speaker 3: going back to my school, days you knew what you
- 39:12Speaker 3: could get by with in your first period class that
- 39:14Speaker 3: you couldn't get by with in your second period. Class
- 39:17Speaker 3: SO i think it's. Right it's why it's important that
- 39:19Speaker 3: you do get a straight line policy across the. Board
- 39:22Speaker 3: i'm sure you guys will figure it. Out, Hey, RICK
- 39:24Speaker 3: i know you're busy and you're doing some traveling. TODAY
- 39:26Speaker 3: i appreciate you taking time in our schedule to join this.
- 39:29Speaker 5: Man thanks a lot, Anytime, DAVE i really appreciate.
- 39:32Speaker 3: You all, Right Rick, Cavita president of The Kanawh County
- 39:35Speaker 3: board Of. Education it's fourteen minutes away from. Ten, AGAIN
- 39:38Speaker 3: i just, got you, know a lot of issues about.
- 39:42Speaker 3: Questions and again it's not for. ME i, MEAN i
- 39:45Speaker 3: don't have, KIDS i don't even live In Kanaan. County
- 39:48Speaker 3: but other count all fifty five counties got to come
- 39:50Speaker 3: up with some sort of a. Plan we've already seen.
- 39:52Speaker 3: That Fayett county started to work ON, Theirs Montguelia county
- 39:54Speaker 3: started to work ON. Theirs Kanawa county is but that
- 39:57Speaker 3: doesn't give them a whole a lot of time they're
- 40:01Speaker 3: going to vote on this on like The, monday and
- 40:04Speaker 3: then school starts later in the. WEEK i Think rick
- 40:05Speaker 3: said on A, friday kind of figure this. Out BUT
- 40:09Speaker 3: i will say, this you, KNOW i Asked rick about
- 40:13Speaker 3: being able to access certain things on. iPads kids can
- 40:18Speaker 3: figure it. Out they will figure it. Out As Ryan
- 40:21Speaker 3: nicholson smiles at me through the, Glass they'll figure it.
- 40:24Speaker 3: Out and that's the. Thing but AS i have said
- 40:27Speaker 3: since day, one who's going to have the biggest problem
- 40:30Speaker 3: with this. Policy it's going to be the. Parents and
- 40:33Speaker 3: this has been proven over and over and over again
- 40:36Speaker 3: in every. State the kids get, along kids. Adapts but
- 40:41Speaker 3: it was the. PARENTS i was reading one. STUDY i
- 40:44Speaker 3: think it was out Of alabama that the parents like
- 40:47Speaker 3: went to the school board with protest signs and. Whatever
- 40:50Speaker 3: the kids were perfectly fine with. It it was the
- 40:52Speaker 3: parents that had the. Issue the helicopter. Parents not, all but,
- 40:58Speaker 3: Many dex says, AGAIN i, said school offices in the
- 41:00Speaker 3: classrooms need silent alarms for teachers and staff to press like,
- 41:04Speaker 3: banks restaurants and convenience stores in case of. Danger there
- 41:07Speaker 3: is no, need says the texture for kids to have
- 41:09Speaker 3: cell phones in the. Classroom we gen exors survived the
- 41:12Speaker 3: school day just fine without. Phones parents call the office
- 41:15Speaker 3: and leave a message for your. Child that's all you
- 41:17Speaker 3: have to. Do if there's a family, emergency then go
- 41:19Speaker 3: to the school and check your kids, out says A.
- 41:23Speaker 3: Texture and, AGAIN i KEEP i keep throwing out. Problems
- 41:27Speaker 3: an old boss one time, said don't cut me with,
- 41:29Speaker 3: problems coming with meats to. Solutions but as Mister, wilson
- 41:34Speaker 3: the host of Talk, line pointed, out and during a
- 41:35Speaker 3: meeting we had AND i kind of gave him away
- 41:38Speaker 3: on the. Air, here what would keep a kid from
- 41:40Speaker 3: having a fake, telephone you know one and Saying, okay
- 41:45Speaker 3: here's here's my here's my. Phone it's going in the,
- 41:46Speaker 3: pouts it's going in the giant band, whatever and having
- 41:49Speaker 3: keeping the real. Phone what would keep them from from doing?
- 41:51Speaker 3: That but then again you're listening to the guy who

- 46:15Speaker 3: from WHAT i, understand walked into The Charleston Police department
- 46:19Speaker 3: and turned himself. In he was wanted on a warrant
- 46:22Speaker 3: for malicious wounding in the shooting of a fifteen year
- 46:25Speaker 3: old female In. Jefferson you heard this story a couple

- 47:37Speaker 3: this is a really interesting. Case and Again Kat skelton's
- 47:40Speaker 3: got a great story posted about a tragic situation over
- 47:43Speaker 3: a W e metronews dot. Com it was an interesting
- 47:45Speaker 3: case because when the charges were first put out there
