- 0:42The Doctor Who commentary podcast?
- 0:46I'm Commander rat gnaw. Oh, no on the computer.
- 0:50Hello team at it. Bracknell receiving now.
- 0:57Eastbourne sending now oh God! Joe's here!
- 1:02Hello! Hello, I've just seen my it in.
- 1:05I'm here and I've got my underpants on the outside of my
- 1:08trousers. As always man double system,
- 1:13Newcastle sending now bracknell receiving.
- 1:17Now transfer interrupted. Too much, smart Brigadier.
- 1:24It is very complete. I've just been wasted on skaro
- 1:29by the time rate on our way. We've done that one already but
- 1:32we have so hello. However bank for a copter offers
- 1:39commentary in a long time, in 500 years, it feels like hmm, so
- 1:46it's less see you and nice to finally be going off on a trip
- 1:51to the moon which we have in promising.
- 1:54Or sometime. The Moon.
- 1:59Yes, we're not going to Antarctica.
- 2:02No Fraser, no, no Doom seeds death.
- 2:10Yeah, that's how you remember. So you tell them apart, if you
- 2:12see your breath its seeds of death, if you were on the moon
- 2:15at seeds are doom, Stephon. Alexander told me that one.
- 2:21So yes we want but he's always got that wrong.
- 2:25Oh sorry. I thought we were doing a big
- 2:27finish audio the seeds of War by mitnick Freaks.
- 2:33Yeah, no one remembers that one. I'll say yeah.
- 2:37Yeah, so I'll put that one. I don't remember that one.
- 2:41Well, well after stop on tombe, Kevin this lead and so I can
- 2:44talk about them all. You want to what it would be
- 2:47very funny to do a commentary where we're all watching
- 2:49different things, you know, it would be funny but, but would it
- 2:57would it can I hijacked your intro for just one second,
- 3:00please? No, you did.
- 3:02You did warn me that you had two things to say.
- 3:05So I do because you. Well, number one is I have to
- 3:08say this and this is the Fraser, right?
- 3:11The amount of people are got coming at me, at the moment.
- 3:13Telling me that you're changing, their opinions on less
- 3:17well-regarded stories, I feel like you're doing some bloody
- 3:21good work here. I'll tell you.
- 3:22The Dominator is, what was it the other day robot of Sherwood,
- 3:26all of these fucking Duds are being reappraised.
- 3:29Thanks to, you know, unbelievable.
- 3:32No, because they're not duds Jewel, the all really good
- 3:34stories. That's right.
- 3:35Sorry, I will the these underrated Classics and anyone
- 3:39that has said that I've changed their opinion on something, then
- 3:42that's just really nice and really get his right in the
- 3:45fields and thank you very much. That's really appreciate it.
- 3:49Like seriously for a second. I think that is wonderful though
- 3:52that just through sort of listening to us, have a
- 3:54discourse that people are going back, Avenue Avenue, watch and,
- 3:58and finding stuff to love in a shroud.
- 4:01I love. I want to spray my luck.
- 4:04So for that was rather. Lovely.
- 4:06The set, you think? Oh, sorry, gone.
- 4:08I was just gonna say you guys have done that to me.
- 4:10Plenty, you know, it's what's causing this position to be
- 4:13honest, too. It's nice to be able to give
- 4:16something back to other people. I'll tell you what they know is,
- 4:18come with me said they were re-evaluated the Armageddon
- 4:21Factor yet, you know? Well, they're idiots, Yama
- 4:24Kevin, things are, as we proved is brilliant, you know, Mark's
- 4:30been doing Kate it's how I with Sarah on to watch who and what
- 4:35the ground William. Sera thinking that Crazy Eights
- 4:37it. He'd only read Allah era and so
- 4:40he thought she was. She's fucking loving it.
- 4:43All of it for her she thinks it's marvelous.
- 4:46Yeah. What my second thing is an
- 4:50announcement I would wish to make okay, random places drop it
- 4:54by the south side I want to say anyway this is just this one
- 4:56this week I'll have approached the two of you with a pitch
- 5:01about Project. So I'd like to do with both of
- 5:04you and I've chosen to pair of you and I've chosen you for
- 5:08specific shows to talk about as well.
- 5:11For a reason, I really want to do both the Sarah Jane
- 5:16Adventures and tortured for have a star but I wanted to do it
- 5:20with one voice because I think that would be really interested
- 5:23to unpick those shows in order. So this is really unusual for
- 5:28having such as you see, it's all over the bloody place.
- 5:31Sigh, you are. Tackling the Sarah Jane
- 5:34Adventures. It's true life in podcasting can
- 5:38be an adventure to Joe and Fridays.
- 5:42Are you brave? Soul are tackling Torchwood?
- 5:48Yeah, so I get clear name, I got sex gasoline is how it should
- 5:56be. Why do you think is kind of
- 5:58tailor quite well to the TV because so I think there's a lot
- 6:01of nostalgia in It Sarah Jane Adventures, but there's a lot of
- 6:03innovation as well and phrase Blair, but I can always see what
- 6:08you on Earth out tortured, you know, because I think there's a
- 6:10lot of smarts there, amongst all the smart as well.
- 6:14It's it takes a little while to get its find, its feet.
- 6:19Doesn't, it starts off really trying to be something that it's
- 6:24got no right to train to be and doesn't succeed at all.
- 6:27And but once it does find a treat, then yeah, there's
- 6:30there's some gold in there, wasn't They're so anyway.
- 6:33All that? Yes.
- 6:33All which would gladly talk to it?
- 6:36I'm definitely excited to both. Thank you very much.
- 6:39Both of you, by the way of saying.
- 6:40Yes, because that's a hell of a commitment, and it's Technica
- 6:43podcast for both you. Now, which makes me so happy
- 6:47anyway, on to the seeds of seeds of, that's a bloody doom on to
- 6:51the seeds of death. So I is still yours again.
- 6:55There's the Baton. Yes, so the seeds of death is a
- 6:59story from 1969. From season six of Doctor Who I
- 7:05know Fraser has already done a commentary for a season.
- 7:09Six story that he believes is, is far superior to this one.
- 7:15So I think there's going to be a little bit of controversy all
- 7:18the way through this, and a little bit of disagreement
- 7:21between the three of us. Maybe, maybe we'll see.
- 7:25We'll see what Frizzle could do. You actively dislike this?
- 7:28Of course not. I don't actively dislike it.
- 7:30I just think that there's better stories than this in the season
- 7:36and in fact of all of dr. Hope you know, never mind.
- 7:40You know, the place I come from is is a place that's was very
- 7:44eloquently described by a beautiful soul that is Jeff God.
- 7:48And when he said, you know, I love all of Doctor Who I just
- 7:52love more, some more than others.
- 7:54Mmm. So it's not like I dislike this
- 7:57episode the story. That's a hell of a lot of makeup
- 8:01Ferguson there. even it it's just, there is a birthing other
- 8:06elements that, you know, bring it down in, in my ratings of You
- 8:14know, in it, bring it down in how I feel about the compared
- 8:18with other stories, really. So interesting.
- 8:20It's, it's pretty average in my, in my opinion.
- 8:27So yeah, we'll just get that out.
- 8:29We'll get that out there. Now, we'll get the The, the
- 8:33incendiary comments out now, it's just average, whereas
- 8:37awesome. I think, I think this is
- 8:38probably the wolf best story of the season, after war games,
- 8:45mine drawbar. And The Invasion, I think this
- 8:49is predominant at the dominators ranks.
- 8:52Now, just be great for didn't even right before.
- 8:57So, I ended up, I think, for me, this is a story that I've owned.
- 9:02And for a very long time and I think I undervalued it for a lot
- 9:07of that time and I think it's one that has risen and risen and
- 9:13risen up up the rankings for me as the years have gone on and I
- 9:19would place it. Let's maybe maybe second in the
- 9:24season after the croutons. Hey I love those protons but I
- 9:31don't love the protons more than the war games.
- 9:34Let's see your scores croutons dominant as see today.
- 9:43Well, I mean for me it's I think you know obviously WarGames
- 9:50croutons dominate as my hand rubber or all better than this
- 9:55one is only really I would say maybe the invasion and space
- 10:01pirates. Unfortunate part of a space
- 10:03pirates. It always gets left at the
- 10:04bottom, doesn't it? All right as well but it's
- 10:06Dowell. That's why because we can't see
- 10:09it. It's because we can't mom got
- 10:12Those those five episodes, and, of course, I got, this was like
- 10:15him back. Quite knows what to do with his
- 10:17regulars, either. Especially come episode 6
- 10:20weather in a couple of film inserts and that's it.
- 10:24Well, that's the big problem with a series, isn't it?
- 10:26It's, you know, by the time would get to the end of this
- 10:29series. The, the regulars are Runnin.
- 10:31On fumes, it while the regulars are Korean the series because of
- 10:35what's going on behind the scenes, you know, you've got ten
- 10:38sticks up and Comin, learning his craft, but you've got And I
- 10:42forget, who was the producer at this point, Peter Iron Man,
- 10:47who's in the ball yet. Exactly.
- 10:49So it's optional ratings are down.
- 10:53You know, you're all coming out with, you know, it episode
- 10:57stories, 10 episode stories, which are really stretching the
- 11:02production. So, it's everyone's just kind of
- 11:05running on fumes. And I think this, this story for
- 11:07me is a good example of that way.
- 11:09It's just, you know, the things that live put it above, which is
- 11:13Michael Ferguson and the regulars.
- 11:17You know, enough to give it a little bit of, get it over the
- 11:22Finish Line as it were, but you can tell.
- 11:23This is just a, it's Quicken and the show itself is is stretched
- 11:30and struggling. I agree with you.
- 11:32Those are the two best things about this story.
- 11:33I think the guest characters as well really Elevate this fuchsia
- 11:36misskelley, people like that. I think they are they add a lot
- 11:40of value. Well, should we skip into
- 11:43episode 1 and watch the thing? We should probably stop watching
- 11:46it and then talk about it as a very good idea.
- 11:48Okay. It's going to cause in I will
- 11:52count to say in five, four, three, two, one, Go episode
- 12:00receiving now, voices, genius. Well, they had a weird computer
- 12:10voice in the first, I swore his story didn't know that sort of,
- 12:13I can't do that one. It's we'll give it a go.
- 12:19I can't even remember it. That's how little I watched.
- 12:22Nice Warriors. Well, it's funny.
- 12:25You should say that because you're watching the exact same
- 12:27story know better. Yeah.
- 12:31It's very, it's pretty much the same for anything else has come
- 12:34up with pretty much the same story.
- 12:35I mean, even even lambaste, Every Nation for that, but no
- 12:39one stops to think, you know, crying heels is just delivered.
- 12:43Exactly the same story. I don't think this feels at all,
- 12:46like the ice Warriors. I saw set up in the ice
- 12:50Warriors. You've got the two, so it's Man
- 12:55versus machine, isn't it? It's yeah, you know, it's the
- 12:59Advent of Technology. You've got pendley, running
- 13:02against the computerization. See what Eldred here.
- 13:05Running against team at you've got the two old comrades who
- 13:10have fallen out, which is pending and current in the ice
- 13:16Warriors, but it's El Dorado. What?
- 13:18No. Brad, no.
- 13:20And this one you know that the story beats are identical for.
- 13:25I think I think this is got far more emphasis on sort of action
- 13:29adventure, Alien Invasion and far less typing.
- 13:33I think the ice Warriors is far. More likeable character tail?
- 13:36It feels like it feels to me like a historical in the future.
- 13:40Yeah, it's all right. Yeah.
- 13:41So and that's because I suppose is got a lot little bit more
- 13:46story to it where was this one came?
- 13:48Kind of runs out, not quickly, because it takes a long time for
- 13:52nothing happen in this one. I feel.
- 13:55But this is a lot more fun. The ice Warriors, basically runs
- 13:59on the spot for about four episodes waiting for someone
- 14:02like a bloody decision about that spaceship, I'll give you
- 14:05that. This one does one up and down
- 14:07the same code, or food aims and runs through lots of form a few
- 14:11times as well. So yeah, there was there is what
- 14:12the computer says, we can't do this.
- 14:15Why can't we do this to ourselves?
- 14:20But I do think I do think, like I said, the guest care.
- 14:22Is this a good? I think the guest characters in
- 14:25the ice Warriors are stronger, like it is.
- 14:27And I do think I think this is a better story because I think
- 14:31this is more fun to watch, but I think that's a better character
- 14:35tail. There's more meat on the bones
- 14:37of the ice Warriors, you know, it depends what you want from
- 14:39your store if you want, you know, action adventure and you
- 14:43know people slipping out and fairy liquid.
- 14:45Then you know, this is the one he really wants to make a bit
- 14:48More a bit more like to see a character driven and and you
- 14:53know, that central theme of man versus machine is developed a
- 14:57lot more in that ice Warriors. Yeah, but I've been doing this
- 15:01this story fascinates me because we're in 1916 the very late 60s.
- 15:06So 68, this was made and written and man is going to the moon and
- 15:12Rockets are the really big thing at this point.
- 15:16Everyone is crazy about About space travel and exploration and
- 15:21so Doctor Who doing a story where they go to the Moon.
- 15:25Should be a really big thing. But what's interesting here is
- 15:29that there's this fatigue about Rockets which are the big Fad in
- 15:36the whole world at this point. But in the story, they've just
- 15:41moved on. Yeah, and I find that really
- 15:43fascinating from the timing, because this should be a big
- 15:46space rocket heavy story and it is, but it's not like the
- 15:52stories you'd expect up to So, to be telling at this point in
- 15:56time, I think had Star Trek come along at this point, because I
- 16:00really feel like the team as leading into, like, the
- 16:02transporter now because Star Trek didn't get to the UK, until
- 16:07after the war games, it replaced Doctor Who on Saturday nights.
- 16:13Yeah I think you've hit on something really quite
- 16:17interesting. Their side that Willow agrees
- 16:23that the, you know, that the signs of the time was You know,
- 16:29quite futuristic for that time, but then, you know, sort of
- 16:32Doctor Who was then took The Next Step Beyond the site
- 16:37instability. If you think, you know, a few
- 16:39years before this, you know, sort of like 63 64 65, then
- 16:44Rockets to the Moon, would be pretty Unthinkable, but coming
- 16:48in 68. 69, I guess a that's that's what's going to happen.
- 16:52Not long after this, they are going to put, you know, someone
- 16:56on the moon on a rocket and for the doctor who take, That leap
- 16:59beyond that and go. Okay.
- 17:00So what's the next logical step after Rockets to the Moon, then
- 17:04is, You know, trying to transmit the Moon is, is a really clever
- 17:09idea what's fabulous about it is they make it so domestic though
- 17:13that you've got, like, one in the London landmark and things
- 17:17like that, is that it's just so, so mundane these boobs
- 17:20everywhere. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:24So is as much as a police box of a, you know, red Phone Booth to
- 17:29be commonplace. And under, than in this time,
- 17:31then that's what you want the team at the become.
- 17:33Like, just Regular just the everyday.
- 17:37Yeah. But I do think like the whole.
- 17:41Do we put our trust in the machine thing that element isn't
- 17:46here. It's a it's a piece of Machinery
- 17:48that we use that. We need to get from A to B is
- 17:51the piece of Machinery. We need to fix in order for the
- 17:53story to work but there's there's not that sort of
- 17:56agonizing, you know, do do we trust that?
- 17:59You know the that everyone would they've got past that question,
- 18:02they do trust it because it's just the way things are now but
- 18:06then the next question comes along as they do.
- 18:08We trust the machine. Yes, we trust the machine.
- 18:10But then what happens when the machine lets us down mmm and as
- 18:15our good friend and receive a call as is commonly when we went
- 18:18out and asked for questions. You know, she's reference the
- 18:21machine stops, the short story in this is, you know, exactly
- 18:25what's happening. You know what happens when you
- 18:28are. So reliant on this technology
- 18:30and you know what it is, is inductance currently have like a
- 18:34irritating. I saw, you know, those holding
- 18:36up the plot all the time, you know, like get back in Monster
- 18:39appellate or someone like that, who's, you know, causing a bit
- 18:42of Mischief here. You've got a piece of technology
- 18:44that, you know, we need to get a few more episodes that is where
- 18:46break team at. Again, we can get and we can
- 18:48churn out a few more episodes of the ice whereas stomping about
- 18:52on the moon. So I'd just like, to quickly
- 18:55mention that, that's how it'll be done for the stoplight.
- 18:59Yeah, brilliant. We've talked all over him and
- 19:03he's dead now. So Thank you.
- 19:05Harry. It was lovely to see you.
- 19:07Five minutes in as well. He does.
- 19:10Yeah, he gets some. Yeah, he gets the plastic chair
- 19:13of death. Oh, that's right.
- 19:16Yeah. Did you say Sam Smith for that
- 19:18ceremony recently? Yes, he was wearing the hearing.
- 19:22They All Odds Jan. Well, can I mention them, please
- 19:27The Fabulous POV shots that Michael Ferguson's doing of the
- 19:31ice warriors on the moon. What is it a bigger?
- 19:33And it's very cleverly done. As you get glimpses of the
- 19:37monster. But because we've never seen a
- 19:40nice log before or you wouldn't know necessarily who it is.
- 19:45That is coming back, so it's really nicely done.
- 19:50It's the classic thing, isn't it?
- 19:51It's keeping you on Starbuck until the first Cliffhanger.
- 19:55You know thing which Mabus Bobby does really well in the
- 19:58dominators when the qual disappear.
- 20:02So it's it's a crappy student, it's nothing particularly new
- 20:08but it is done very well. It's time really stylish Li and
- 20:11it's done in a way that will keep your interest.
- 20:13Like we've done aliens attacking basis for an entire season in
- 20:16season 5. So there's nothing new.
- 20:19But I don't think it was None quite like this before that's
- 20:22what makes it you know, maybe Michael Ferguson thought that I
- 20:25was like what we've done this for you over again and again,
- 20:27let's spice it up a bit. Can I take a moment to point up
- 20:31know that we are eight minutes into the story and the Tardis
- 20:35team of just arrived. If this was a Colin Baker story,
- 20:38people will be clamoring. Now saying how dare the sixth
- 20:41doctor and Perry, not join the story until this point?
- 20:44But yes, and I mean obviously, it's a 23 minute run time, 8
- 20:48minutes so kind of it. The third of the way in before
- 20:52we see the doctor Jamie and Zoe now is that an issue for you
- 20:56guys or or knocks? I know it is for some people.
- 20:58Some people are You know, I like that.
- 21:02We've had a big long setup here. I think that works really well
- 21:06and we know from the behind the scenes stuff that the regulars
- 21:11are really tired and they're doing whatever they can to keep
- 21:15Patrick troughton happy now. After he's had to carry the
- 21:19whole first episode of the Mind robber and the three of them
- 21:23have had to do this. So you know, they make sense
- 21:27creative choices. I I know, let's give Patrick
- 21:30child a chance to play the villain.
- 21:32All right. Well that's bloody exhausting
- 21:34because now he's got to do two parts.
- 21:36All right? Yes, the mind Robert.
- 21:37Let's have a whole episode featuring just the regulars.
- 21:39That'll be great. A great Money Saver.
- 21:41Well, that's why we've got a carry 20 minutes of this type
- 21:44know what and is doing what 48 episodes a year.
- 21:48Yep, yep. And it's amazing.
- 21:50And and the most brilliant thing is you wouldn't know it.
- 21:55None of that shows on the screen.
- 21:57They don't look tired at all. This Is one of my favorite
- 22:01Tardis teams. This is a team you would want to
- 22:05travel with because they're just going around in the universe,
- 22:08having great fun, even though they are confronting scary
- 22:11monsters and foam every other week.
- 22:15But so, I have a good rapport between these three actors is
- 22:21one of the finest Trio's in Doctor Who history.
- 22:26And it's a good thing, it is as well, because like I said, it is
- 22:28the whole series. Now is running off the back of
- 22:31these three. I don't agree with you entirely.
- 22:35I think, I think there's enough sort of story worth Direction,
- 22:40worth and other bits and Bobs in this.
- 22:42Well, welcome to discuss part 4. We see will have a really good
- 22:46opportunity to put that to the test because someone goes on
- 22:49holiday don't do. But that happens all the time in
- 22:52the 60s, that happens all this. Yeah.
- 22:54So do we praise her highness has just heard a holiday in The
- 22:57Invasion. He's been asleep for three
- 22:58weeks. Yeah, but when you see people
- 23:02character, it's a bit. It's a bit harder to get away
- 23:05with. Isn't it comes when it's Jamie
- 23:08or when it's Susan or when it's Barbarian or someone?
- 23:10It's a lot easier to work around that when it's the doctor.
- 23:17How well do you think that works out here?
- 23:19And I will jump ahead now, but when the doctors at the action
- 23:22from our episode was just like, William Hartnell in Dalek
- 23:25invasion of Earth. The story keeps going.
- 23:27It's like the doctor Light episodes.
- 23:28In the new series, the stories keep going, like, does the
- 23:32doctor have to be the focus all the time?
- 23:35I don't think so. I just got be a bloody good
- 23:37story. It's interesting Doctor Who so
- 23:41there is that argument that he does when I had the BBC video
- 23:46obviously. That was all a feature-length
- 23:49story and for a long time, I didn't notice that he was absent
- 23:55for a whole episode when you watch it like that because the
- 23:59story is continuing and there's lots of action in Jeopardy,
- 24:02through that episode. And you've got the standing
- 24:05who's just there. Just enough to remind you and
- 24:08the doctors just just unconscious.
- 24:11So, It doesn't didn't feel like a big big problem is that the
- 24:17episode where we go to Earth, where the ice Warrior first goes
- 24:20to Earth, and he starts talking, and then he'll and they're going
- 24:23out. Here we go.
- 24:23Yes, either fill in that accident, that episode full of
- 24:26like memorable stuff to sort of distract you from the fact of
- 24:29the doctors, not around at them and you still got Jamie and Zoe
- 24:33are cute. As a button, we love hanging out
- 24:34with him. Yeah, I was I was exactly the
- 24:39same. When I watched the time meddler
- 24:40on the 1992 or 93, repeat seasonal.
- 24:44I completely missed the fact that William article goes on
- 24:47holiday and episode ever see what the sort of pre-recorded
- 24:53audio of them in the cell in some on trucks in water through
- 24:55it, but the monkey. So that was enough to fold fool
- 24:58me when I was a teenager. Mhm.
- 25:01Yes me. Sorry like go away I'll come up
- 25:03when I'm ready. Awesome.
- 25:07So you sparked something in me that a second ago, you said you
- 25:10wanted that you'd want to hang out with this Tardis team.
- 25:13Yes what made me think the dr. Jamie Zoe.
- 25:16It's not the three of us is free kids or get
- 25:32anyone other than freezer. God get me.
- 25:38The bubble wrap. Come on.
- 25:45I want to say is well, right way, I know only on the moon
- 25:47nowhere. No nowhere on.
- 25:48Earth at the moment that Bloody little wallet.
- 25:51They've got the amount of shots that Buckle focus and gets
- 25:55silhouetted shots out of that Lit Up wall.
- 25:58I think we need to sorry. I mean, the whole set is, you
- 26:03wouldn't think this was lying Groove know that they did a hell
- 26:08of a lot into these into this tiny Studio.
- 26:11Yeah. And none of it feels cramped.
- 26:13No. Little lady speaks spaces.
- 26:17And so that that's down to unpause Allen who was the set
- 26:21designer and Michael Ferguson again here being extra clever
- 26:25with his camera work. You know is how we should do
- 26:29things as well. Yes, which gives you a sense of
- 26:32space numbers reflected on people's faces and there's just
- 26:35always something interesting going on in the set Yes, and
- 26:39it's there's a lot of shooting people from behind and things
- 26:43like that. So you pull out, so you
- 26:45instantly feel like you're in a big space because you're looking
- 26:49across them. So like this shot here with
- 26:53eldred's, sort of helping them holding them up at gunpoint, but
- 26:56the regulars are all back to the camera.
- 26:59So if you feel like you're looking into this room, hmm.
- 27:03What are your kind of being held up there?
- 27:05Not you because the guy was coming here.
- 27:08Yeah, I think he's always thinking about composition,
- 27:10isn't it? It's like I got a lot of money
- 27:13but I'm not got a lot of creativity and I'm going to use
- 27:16it. Yeah, I think I know you two
- 27:19have discussed Michael Ferguson extensively when you did.
- 27:22Did the 7 episode epic, that is the ambassador's of death but
- 27:29here there's a lot of very similar techniques so we'll see
- 27:33that with the ice Warrior location footage.
- 27:36Which yes, yet very Very, very like obviously like the Masters
- 27:41and things like that but and his, his Studio work is just
- 27:45superb. He's so far ahead of just about
- 27:49everyone else and at this point and we've got got some really
- 27:53heavy weight Doctor Who directors working on the show at
- 27:56this point. So David Maloney and Douglas
- 27:59Canfield and David Maloney again and again because they keep
- 28:04coming bringing him back but he's the equal of all of them.
- 28:08Is one of the best directors of dr.
- 28:10Whoever and phrase I feel I was. Sorry, god.
- 28:15Well I was just going to leave us with another question.
- 28:17You know, why do we not talk about Michael Ferguson in
- 28:21general in higher turns? Why, you know, you think the
- 28:24great directors you do think will become field and even
- 28:28Maloney. You know Michael Ferguson is one
- 28:30that has doesn't really get top billing in a lot conversations.
- 28:35Why do you think I've got an answer though?
- 28:38I think Ferguson doesn't have now, I think ambassador to death
- 28:42is a bit of a classic but I don't think he has what is
- 28:46considered to be a classic amongst the ones that he's
- 28:50directed and so like that he can field has Dykes master plan
- 28:55everything and season do and what porphyria alone He's Got
- 28:59Talent, swing triang makgeolli Brian's got robots of death.
- 29:03I think he's brilliant Michael Ferguson but I don't think in
- 29:06like fan. That you know, that horse a.
- 29:09So if an opinion that he's got an out-and-out classic, I could
- 29:13be wrong now and I think maybe it's just because he only does
- 29:17440. Yeah, and to be a classic
- 29:21director of Doctor Who you've got to put your, put your hours
- 29:24in. And if you do, do a hell of a
- 29:27lot more than that. So all those people we
- 29:30mentioned, they're directed a hell of a lot of Doctor Who.
- 29:33And if you include Derek Martinez, who is often sort of
- 29:36referred to as one of Doctor Who?
- 29:38Outside directors as well. Then he does loads and lots of
- 29:44big big well thought of Adventures as well.
- 29:47So, you know, I think that might be something to do with it that
- 29:50he perhaps he takes what generally our average scripts
- 29:56and elevates them rather than having a really fantastic
- 30:02script, although I do really like this one, I will keep
- 30:05stressing that but you know, No, I do wonder if if that's if
- 30:11that's it, whether he just takes something and takes it up to a
- 30:14different level. I think, in terms of producing a
- 30:19piece of Doctor, Who stylish Li ambassador's of death is his
- 30:26best direction of the for, but you know, what's really
- 30:29interesting about him is he does a heart know, he does a
- 30:32troughton, then he does to Jon pertwee's and you would expect
- 30:36because TV came on a A lot in those sort of across those
- 30:41doctors, you think that his direction would improve.
- 30:44I think the war machines is brilliantly directed, he's fully
- 30:47formed when he yeah, he comes, he knows what he's doing and he
- 30:50was a young Jewish, man at that point as well.
- 30:52So I'm probably his weakest even though it's still good.
- 30:57Is his last? I think.
- 31:01Yes, quite possibly. I mean I'm still probably got
- 31:04more time for Access than I have the war games and but would find
- 31:09it difficult to argue that to be honest you've got more time for
- 31:13axis than the war games. I think he needs the war
- 31:16machines. Our machines got Griffis late.
- 31:19They were if you to Doom seeds of like you genuinely made, So
- 31:35interesting about this and I do think it probably is two
- 31:42episodes too long, it would be a really tight for part of this.
- 31:47There's a lot of talking points. Yeah, and here we are.
- 31:52We're nearly through episode 1 and we've barely talked about
- 31:56what's actually happening on screen because there's a lot of
- 31:59things to unpack before we get there, as a reason for that we
- 32:02haven't got very far yet. That's what happened on screen.
- 32:05That's right. Get your setup.
- 32:08You know, this is a this is what part one is for it is to sue
- 32:12give you the relationships between people, it is to give
- 32:16you the The status quo, then break the status quo and have
- 32:22the problem that has got to be done.
- 32:26Could it be done, quicker? Movies on this?
- 32:29Do you think? Maybe?
- 32:30But this is the 60s and not every part.
- 32:32One. In the 60s is of, is a Pacey
- 32:35classic, you know? So we're enjoying the characters
- 32:39and we're getting to know these. People was what you said about
- 32:43the regulars, being Vice alive and are vital to this first
- 32:46episode of tall. This episode would play out,
- 32:49pretty much beat the be whether they were in it or not.
- 32:52Yeah, I mean, this could be another mission and you know, to
- 32:54be honest, yeah, here they are at the back of the shot but
- 32:58they're not contributing anything to this argument
- 33:00between the free free people here.
- 33:03It's once a decision has been made to use the rocket Yeah,
- 33:07that's when they all become vital, when they all go up to
- 33:09the, they all have a role to play.
- 33:12I mean, there is a very good reason.
- 33:14You can't put Elrod in the rocket though, why Eldred must
- 33:18live? Interestingly live, he was
- 33:24supposed to go up in the hospital or in the original
- 33:27version of the script before. It was he he was going to go up
- 33:31to the Moon with them because he snuck away because he wanted to
- 33:34be on these rocket. It is a bit weird.
- 33:37It is been spending all this time building this rocket and
- 33:39he's desperate to go. The spices are long, but I hang
- 33:41in, you know, hmm, I can fill terroristic.
- 33:45Say no, way on a minute, we need someone small down on the planet
- 33:48later when the dirt is how to stop these ice Warriors.
- 33:53That's what you want to do. We for Sorry that can stop a
- 33:57lovely. Lovely Zoe.
- 33:59Oh my word Wendy pepper has got pockets of charm as a she oh my
- 34:06God. What's that always?
- 34:08Gotta Scout monster. It's a nice Warrior dad and here
- 34:17we go and here we go to lose multi-court from the story as
- 34:20well. Who is back after playing three
- 34:22parts in the keys of marinus. What No, he's gone.
- 34:26If I'd three parts in that story.
- 34:28Yes. Wow, it's prolific.
- 34:31Very so. Do you have an issue with
- 34:33mirror? Lon?
- 34:34There's quite a lot of it because I'm gonna swell, I'll
- 34:37comment on Twitter that's like oh, don't you know, like it.
- 34:41Well, if there's one thing in the story that we've got more of
- 34:46than form, it's Movin On. Is it gets a little bit
- 34:50tiresome, it's just a every, you know, if you took all the middle
- 34:55on scenes out, you would have five pots rather than six does
- 34:58that many miral on deaths. In this it just gets a little
- 35:01bit repetitive. Actually, it's a lovely effect.
- 35:06It's just time to have another one.
- 35:08I'll meet up with her what 79 already in this episode and 300
- 35:13more to come and see. Like what 16 Stevie, although be
- 35:21lovely. You know, they had that Empress
- 35:23of Mars effect where they turn into bouncy balls.
- 35:26Mmm, isn't it? It is, I think it's a little bit
- 35:31beyond them for the sixties, maybe boys.
- 35:34I mean, I don't you. All right though, I think the
- 35:36barely touch what was on the screen in that, you know, not
- 35:39much to say, well, I'll tell you what phrase, have you interrupts
- 35:43so to and keep us on track? Oh, well, Absolutely never
- 35:48manage that.
