- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Ready for another market trip? Lucas: You know it. We've bought so many things at the market — chicken, fish, vegetables. Luna: Right, but today I want something sweet and tropical. Lucas: Oh, I bet I know what you're thinking. Jackfruit? Luna: Yes! Nangka. I love jackfruit. But I've never bought one before. Lucas: Perfect time to learn. So first, how do you say 'I want jackfruit'? Luna: Hmm... Saya mahu nangka. Lucas: Exactly. Saya mahu nangka. Try it once more. Luna: Saya mahu nangka. Lucas: Great. Now, jackfruit is usually sold by the piece, not by kilo. So you'd ask 'Berapa harga sebiji?' — how much is one fruit? Luna: Berapa harga sebiji? Lucas: Yes. Sebiji means 'one piece' for round fruits. So if you see a big jackfruit, you ask that. Luna: OK, got it. Berapa harga sebiji? Lucas: Now, you want to know if it's ripe. 'Nangka ini masak?' — is this jackfruit ripe? Luna: Nangka ini masak? Masak means ripe, right? Lucas: Exactly. Masak can also mean 'cooked', but for fruit it means 'ripe'. So repeat after me: Nangka ini masak? Luna: Nangka ini masak? Lucas: Good. Now, what if you only want half? Jackfruits are huge. You can say 'Saya mahu setengah biji.' — I want half a fruit. Luna: Saya mahu setengah biji. Setengah is half, like half a kilo before. Lucas: Right. So 'setengah biji' is half a piece. And then you might ask 'Boleh potong?' — can you cut it? Luna: Boleh potong? Can you cut it? That's useful because jackfruit is sticky. Lucas: Yeah, it's a mess to cut yourself. So let's run through the whole conversation. Walk up to the seller and say: Saya mahu nangka. Luna: Saya mahu nangka. Lucas: Then ask: Berapa harga sebiji? Luna: Berapa harga sebiji? Lucas: Check: Nangka ini masak? Luna: Nangka ini masak? Lucas: If you want half: Saya mahu setengah biji. Luna: Saya mahu setengah biji. Lucas: And finally: Boleh potong? Luna: Boleh potong? Lucas: Perfect. Now imagine you're at the market and you see a beautiful jackfruit. You're about to buy it. Luna: OK, let me try the whole thing. Excuse me, Saya mahu nangka. Berapa harga sebiji? Nangka ini masak? Saya mahu setengah biji. Boleh potong? Lucas: Wow, that was excellent! You sounded like a local. Luna: Really? Thanks! I feel like I can actually do this now. Lucas: Absolutely. And if you're enjoying these market episodes, we have a small request.
