- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Monday, it's the 7th of
- 0:16April. Had to work out which month
- 0:17we're in, but here we are in April, and this means it's only
- 0:20two weeks to go until we reach Easter.
- 0:24Wow. This year has flown by already,
- 0:26and we're just around the corner from Easter.
- 0:29I hope your Lenten season is going well.
- 0:31And over the next two weeks, my prayer for you and for me,
- 0:34friends, is that you can find some time.
- 0:37We can find some time to stop and reflect on the enormity of
- 0:42the journey that we are on, heading toward that hill on
- 0:46Calvary and an empty tomb. And this week as we read through
- 0:50the book of John, our journey kind of mirrors our Lenten
- 0:54journey. And today, today is the most
- 0:57significant of Jesus miracles, which really kind of tightens
- 1:02the spotlight, focuses. That's the word I'm after, the
- 1:04spotlight on Jesus and the plot to end his life.
- 1:08Yes, this is that marvellous, marvellous story of Jesus
- 1:11raising his friend Lazarus from the dead.
- 1:14So let's read together John Chapter 11.
- 1:27A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany with his
- 1:31sisters Mary and Martha. This is the Mary who later
- 1:34poured the expense of perfume on the Lord's feet and wiped them
- 1:38with her hair. Her brother Lazarus was sick.
- 1:41So the two sisters sent a message to Jesus telling him,
- 1:44Lord, your dear friend is very sick.
- 1:48But when Jesus heard about it, he said Lazarus's sickness will
- 1:52not end in death. No, it happened for the glory of
- 1:56God, so that the Son of God will receive glory from this.
- 2:00So although Jesus loved Martha, Mary and Lazarus, he stayed
- 2:04where he was for the next two days.
- 2:07Finally he said to his disciples, let's go back to
- 2:10Judea. But his disciples objected.
- 2:13Rabbi, they said only a few days ago the people in Judea were
- 2:17trying to stone you. Are you going there again?
- 2:21Jesus replied. There are 12 hours of daylight
- 2:24every day. During the day, people can walk
- 2:27safely. They can see because they have
- 2:29the light of this world. But at night there is danger of
- 2:32stumbling because we have no light.
- 2:35Then he said, Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I
- 2:40will go and wake him up. The disciples said.
- 2:44Lord, if he is sleeping, he will soon get better.
- 2:48They thought Jesus meant Lazarus was simply sleeping, but Jesus
- 2:52meant Lazarus had died, so he told them plainly, Lazarus is
- 2:56dead and for your sakes, I'm glad I wasn't there.
- 3:00For now, you will really believe.
- 3:03Come, let's go see him, Thomas, nicknamed the twin, said to his
- 3:08fellow disciples. Let's go too, and die with
- 3:12Jesus. When Jesus arrived at Bethany,
- 3:16he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for
- 3:19four days. Bethany was only a few miles
- 3:23down the road from Jerusalem, and many of the people had come
- 3:25to console Martha and Mary in their loss.
- 3:28And Martha got word that Jesus was coming.
- 3:31She went to meet him, but Mary stayed in the house.
- 3:35Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if only you had been here, my
- 3:39brother would not have died. But even now I know that God
- 3:43will give you whatever you ask. Jesus told her, Your brother
- 3:49will rise again. Yes, Martha said, he will rise
- 3:53when everyone else rises at the last day.
- 3:56Jesus told her I am the resurrection and the life anyone
- 4:02who believes in me will live even after dying.
- 4:06Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never, ever
- 4:11die. Do you believe this Martha?
- 4:14Yes, Lord, she told him, I have always believed you are the
- 4:18Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from
- 4:23God. Then she returned to Mary.
- 4:27She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her the
- 4:30teacher is here and wants to see you.
- 4:33So Mary immediately went to him. Jesus had stayed outside the
- 4:38village at the place where Martha met him.
- 4:41When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her
- 4:44leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus grave
- 4:47to weep, so they followed her there.
- 4:50When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said,
- 4:55Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.
- 5:02When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing
- 5:05with her, a deep anger welled up within him, and he was deeply
- 5:11troubled. Where have you put him?
- 5:14He asked them. They told him, Lord, come and
- 5:17see. Then Jesus wept.
- 5:22The people who were standing nearby said, See how much he
- 5:25loved him. But some said, this man healed a
- 5:29blind man. Couldn't he have kept Lazarus
- 5:31from dying? Jesus was still angry as he
- 5:35arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its
- 5:38entrance. Roll the stone aside, Jesus told
- 5:42them. But Martha, the dead man's
- 5:44sister, protested. Lord, he has been dead for four
- 5:49days. The smell will be terrible,
- 5:51Jesus responded. Didn't I tell you that you would
- 5:55see God's glory if you believe so?
- 5:58They rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven
- 6:02and said, Father, thank you for hearing me.
- 6:07You always hear me. But I said it aloud for the sake
- 6:11of all these people standing here, so that they will believe
- 6:14you sent me. Then Jesus shouted, Lazarus come
- 6:20out. And the dead man came out, his
- 6:25hands and feet bound in grave clothes, his face wrapped in a
- 6:29headcloth. Jesus told them, Unwrap him and
- 6:33let him go. Many of the people who were with
- 6:38Mary believed in Jesus when they saw this happen, but some went
- 6:42to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
- 6:45Then the leading priests and Pharisees called the High
- 6:47Council together. What are we going to do?
- 6:52They asked each other. This man certainly performs many
- 6:55miraculous signs. If we allow him to go on like
- 6:58this, soon everyone will believe in him.
- 7:01Then the Roman army will come and destroy both our temple and
- 7:05our nation. Caiaphas, who was the high
- 7:08priest at the time, said. You don't know what you're
- 7:12talking about. You don't realise that it's
- 7:15better for you that one man should die for the people than
- 7:18for the whole nation to be destroyed.
- 7:22He did not say this on his own. As high priest at that time, he
- 7:27was led to prophecy that Jesus would die for the entire nation
- 7:31and not only for that nation, but to bring together and unite
- 7:34all the children of God scattered around the world.
- 7:38So from that time on, the Jewish leaders began to plot Jesus
- 7:43death. As a result, Jesus stopped his
- 7:46public ministry among the people and left Jerusalem.
- 7:50He went to a place near the wilderness to the village of
- 7:52Ephraim and stayed there with his disciples.
- 7:56It was now almost time for the Jewish Passover celebration, and
- 8:00many people from all over the country arrived in Jerusalem
- 8:04several days early so they could go through the purification
- 8:07ceremony before Passover began. They kept looking for Jesus, but
- 8:12as they stood around in the temple, they said to each other,
- 8:15What do you think? He won't come for Passover, will
- 8:18He? Meanwhile, the leading priests
- 8:21and Pharisees had publicly ordered that anyone seeing Jesus
- 8:26must report it immediately so they could arrest him.
- 8:40My Lord, as we read this story, it's easy for our hearts to
- 8:44despair as we hear of these plots thickening against Jesus,
- 8:48as we know the challenges and the terrible Rd that lies ahead
- 8:52for him. But at every stage we hear that
- 8:55this is indeed your plan, that Jesus did not come here just to
- 9:01preach the good word or to live a good life.
- 9:06But ultimately, you sent Jesus here so that he could, by his
- 9:10death and resurrection, redeem us and find a way that we could
- 9:15come back to your side to be reunited with you and drawn into
- 9:20your family, perfect and blameless in your eyes, thanks
- 9:24to Jesus. And so we thank you for Jesus.
- 9:29We pray that we would get to know Him better every day
- 9:32through Your spirit in US. We pray all of this in His
- 9:35saving name, Amen.
