- 0:22Speaker 2: on a Saturday, September 26th. One more preseason game to go.
- 0:27Speaker 2: It will be on the road as the Kraken... Take

- 0:34Speaker 2: Everett Fitzhugh, Al Koniski will be on the call. We'll

- 0:44Speaker 2: show to go leading up to faceoff, plus intermission and
- 0:48Speaker 2: postgame coverage. I'll join you. from Network Central for all
- 0:52Speaker 2: the action. Coming up, we'll hear from Ian Furness, the
- 0:55Speaker 2: one and only mayor of Maple Valley. He's on noon
- 0:58Speaker 2: to three weekdays on 93.3 KJR FM. Also on the
- 1:03Speaker 2: TV host side for the Kraken Hockey Network. We'll dive
- 1:07Speaker 2: into the melee from Thursday night. The meaning of one
- 1:11Speaker 2: last game as well for several Kraken veterans in preseason play. Well,
- 1:15Speaker 2: look at it all with the Inferness, plus a conversation
- 1:18Speaker 2: from the Kraken dressing room after practice Friday with Brandon
- 1:22Speaker 2: Montour coming up in just a bit. Well, the Kraken
- 1:25Speaker 2: knocked off Calgary 4-3 in a shootout, but on Thursday
- 1:29Speaker 2: night had to sweat it out with a veteran-heavy lineup
- 1:33Speaker 2: and many making their NHL preseason debut tonight. against a
- 1:36Speaker 2: Flames roster comprised mostly of players who could be bound
- 1:41Speaker 2: for the American Hockey League. The Kraken were down 3-1
- 1:44Speaker 2: in the middle of a penalty-barred second period. Here's what happened,
- 1:48Speaker 2: beginning with Mackie Samuskevich at the front of the net.
- 1:52Speaker 3: And now Vince Dunn from behind on Sam Morton. Josh
- 1:56Speaker 3: Mahura against the wall as he's got his man pinned.
- 2:00Speaker 3: I believe that's Roy Cairns. Indeed it is. Andreas Englund.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Bobby McMahon will fight in the right wing corner as
- 2:07Speaker 3: Englund has him wrapped up. Now McMahon will pin him
- 2:10Speaker 3: against the inboards. Josh Mahura in below the goal line
- 2:14Speaker 3: as he and Cairns continue. That was only the appetizer.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Capo Caco given a roughing penalty at 4.07. And then
- 2:19Speaker 3: Pandora's box opened at 4.43 when Brennan Othman of Calgary
- 2:21Speaker 3: targeted Vili Odovinan in the right corner.
- 2:23Speaker 4: Odovinan took the hit, then followed.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Up by grabbing Othman and landing several punches to.
- 2:46Speaker 2: A full on-ice melee resulted in this at 443. On
- 2:51Speaker 2: the Calgary side, Andrea Sanglin, five minutes for fighting. Rory Cairns,
- 2:55Speaker 2: double minor for roughing. On the Kraken side, Vince Dunn,
- 2:59Speaker 2: two for roughing. Bobby McMahon, five for fighting. Josh Mahura,
- 3:03Speaker 2: double minor for roughing. Then at 722, Othman, two minutes
- 3:07Speaker 2: for charging. Ten-minute misconduct on a Vinen. Two minutes for
- 3:11Speaker 2: an instigator, a five-minute major for fighting, and a game misconduct.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Curtis Douglas, two minutes for roughing, and a game misconduct,
- 3:20Speaker 2: along with a partridge in a pear tree. Well, all
- 3:22Speaker 2: of this was wrapped around by a power play goal
- 3:24Speaker 2: from Aydar Suniev at 6.05, putting the Kraken in a
- 3:29Speaker 2: 3-1 hole. But could a Donnybrook provide some catharsis for
- 3:33Speaker 2: the Kraken in period three?
- 3:34Speaker 3: Now McCann, the veneers in the high slot.
- 3:36Speaker 5: Montour ships, scores!
- 3:45Speaker 3: Brandon Montour trailing the play, walks in right circle, and
- 3:50Speaker 3: a twisted wrister past Devin Cooley. Kraken back down a goal, 3-2,
- 3:55Speaker 3: early in the third.
- 3:57Speaker 6: Yeah, some good offensive forecheck in there by Mackie Samuskevich.
- 4:00Speaker 6: That puck gets out to Matty Beneers, who feeds Montour
- 4:04Speaker 6: on his on-wing. Montour wastes no time putting that over
- 4:08Speaker 6: Cooley's glove-hand side. It's game down 3-2, Calgary, Seattle.
- 4:13Speaker 5: Re-enters Evans, left side, shoots, scores!
- 4:24Speaker 3: What a shot, Riker Evans, down the left wing, turns
- 4:28Speaker 3: the corner, up under the crossbar, Kraken tie the game, 3-3,
- 4:33Speaker 3: 12-29 left in period number three.
- 4:37Speaker 6: Riker Evans streaking on that left side through the neutral zone,
- 4:40Speaker 6: again I mentioned Montour jumping in the rush, this time
- 4:42Speaker 6: it's Evans Jumping into the rush, she does a nice
- 4:45Speaker 6: toe drag move. as he cuts to the front of
- 4:47Speaker 6: the net, beats Cooley over his right shoulder. This game's
- 4:50Speaker 6: locked up at three.
- 4:51Speaker 2: So perhaps a physical epiphany translated into energy, which then
- 4:55Speaker 2: translated into offensive production in the comeback. Both teams survived
- 5:00Speaker 2: overtime at a 3-3 draw, heading into the shootout with
- 5:04Speaker 2: Philip Grubauer supported by shootout goals from Matty Beneers and
- 5:08Speaker 2: Berkley Catton, leaving it all down to this, with Grubauer
- 5:12Speaker 2: staring down one final flame shooter In round number three.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Roy Cairns, the lefty, picks up the puck at center.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Calgary has to score. Cairns, left side, to the front,
- 5:24Speaker 3: walks in. Toe save by Philip Grubauer. And the Seattle
- 5:29Speaker 3: Kraken remain perfect in preseason with a 4-3 win.
- 5:34Speaker 5: In the shootout.
- 5:40Speaker 6: Philip Grubauer with a big save there right at the end.
- 5:43Speaker 6: I think Cairns had him beat. but Grubauer pushed that
- 5:46Speaker 6: right foot out as far as it would go and
- 5:48Speaker 6: made a nice toe save to give.
- 5:50Speaker 7: His team the win.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Game, set, match, comeback complete. The Kraken improving to 3-0
- 5:54Speaker 2: in preseason play, beating Calgary 4-3 as well in the shootout,
- 5:59Speaker 2: and perhaps learning a little bit more about themselves along
- 6:03Speaker 2: the way. Before we get to Ian Furness, here's our
- 6:06Speaker 2: conversation after practice Friday with Kraken defenseman Brandon Montour.
- 6:10Speaker 8: What did you make as far as how things transpired?
- 6:13Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, they came out, you know, hard to play.
- 6:16Speaker 7: They came fast. They came physical.
- 6:17Speaker 9: I think even for me, it's laughing kind of after
- 6:21Speaker 9: a couple of shifts there. I think early on, I
- 6:23Speaker 9: had probably five, six hits against and I'm like, all right,
- 6:27Speaker 9: we're back in it.
- 6:27Speaker 7: But yeah, I think both sides, obviously, we start off slow.
- 6:32Speaker 7: A lot of guys first game.
- 6:33Speaker 9: So an adjustment just to kind of get back into it.
- 6:36Speaker 9: But as the game went on, I thought we got better.
- 6:38Speaker 8: How much are you a fan of the word response
- 6:41Speaker 8: and how that can maybe be a tone setter for
- 6:43Speaker 8: the season?
- 6:44Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, the response is huge.
- 6:46Speaker 9: It's something that this group needs to keep continuing to
- 6:48Speaker 9: get better at. And again, you show up for your teammates,
- 6:52Speaker 9: it just makes the group stronger. And it's good to see,
- 6:54Speaker 9: you know, obviously a couple of guys there mixing it up.
- 6:57Speaker 7: And, you know, obviously... you tend to kind of.
- 7:00Speaker 9: Just try to ease, you know, stay out of it
- 7:03Speaker 9: during preseason just, you know, for health reasons.
- 7:06Speaker 7: But, you know, again, it's hockey.
- 7:09Speaker 9: It's a part of the game, and it's good that
- 7:11Speaker 9: the guys step up for each other.
- 7:12Speaker 7: You know, I heard about it, especially with Otto.
- 7:14Speaker 9: I think there was a little bit of maybe some,
- 7:16Speaker 9: you know, revenge or something, or a bad hit or
- 7:20Speaker 9: something like that. But, again, it's, you know, you step
- 7:25Speaker 9: up for yourself. You step up for a teammate. you know,
- 7:28Speaker 9: we respect that.
- 7:29Speaker 8: What kind of player and teammate are you seeing from
- 7:31Speaker 8: him in this room right now?
- 7:32Speaker 7: With Otto.
- 7:33Speaker 9: He works extremely hard. He might be, okay, he's still
- 7:36Speaker 9: on the ice. So, um, working extremely hard, a younger
- 7:39Speaker 9: kid that's trying to make a name for himself.
- 7:41Speaker 7: And I think he's.
- 7:42Speaker 9: Obviously had a, a really solid camp considering he's, you know,
- 7:45Speaker 9: still a part of the group and, um, big boy.
- 7:48Speaker 9: I didn't really see that he had that mean streak
- 7:50Speaker 9: to him, but, um, sounds like he does. And, a
- 7:53Speaker 9: big boy that closes quick and can skate and make
- 7:56Speaker 9: plays and has that bite to him is great to have.
- 8:01Speaker 8: One game to go here for preseason. Five on five-wise,
- 8:03Speaker 8: where is this team right now at with structure, do
- 8:05Speaker 8: you think?
- 8:06Speaker 9: We're working towards where we want to be, but again,
- 8:08Speaker 9: we've got a week. We've got one more game to
- 8:09Speaker 9: clean things up, a few more practices, and then we'll
- 8:12Speaker 9: be good to go for Thursday. But yeah, we're working
- 8:16Speaker 9: towards getting to.
- 8:17Speaker 7: Where we want to be. What about you and Riker?
- 8:18Speaker 8: Where's the bar set at right now as far as
- 8:20Speaker 8: you working together as a pair and where you want
- 8:21Speaker 8: to be as well?
- 8:22Speaker 7: Yeah, again, he's extremely easy to play with. He skates well.
- 8:26Speaker 7: You know, he's got the competitive edge.
- 8:28Speaker 9: I think we play similar in styles of, like, trying
- 8:30Speaker 9: to get into the aggressiveness in the D zone.
- 8:32Speaker 7: And then can make plays offensively.
- 8:34Speaker 9: Obviously, you can see his goal was, you know, something
- 8:37Speaker 9: that you're not shocked about because he can.
- 8:39Speaker 7: Make those plays with his feet. And then he's got
- 8:42Speaker 7: the skill set to finish.
- 8:43Speaker 9: But I like how we both can skate well, close quick.
- 8:47Speaker 7: We talk.
- 8:47Speaker 9: Obviously, we're friends and we are, you know, very vocal.
- 8:51Speaker 9: I try to get more out of him, you know,
- 8:53Speaker 9: but he's very light all the game, which I love, and,
- 8:56Speaker 9: you know, we complement each other well.
- 8:57Speaker 7: He's just going to continue to keep us.
- 8:59Speaker 9: He keeps getting confidence, playing more minutes, hopefully keep playing together.
- 9:05Speaker 9: Myself and him, especially him, are just going to continue
- 9:08Speaker 9: to keep getting better.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Well, because we live busy hockey lives, sometimes we do
- 9:12Speaker 2: crack in this morning by way of planes, trains, or automobiles.
- 9:16Speaker 2: No exception here is the mayor of Maple Valley, Ian Furness.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Doing this by car to help tee us up for
- 9:24Speaker 2: the Seattle Kraken and the Vancouver Canucks to end the
- 9:27Speaker 2: preseason schedule. I would assume because it is a tad rainy,
- 9:31Speaker 2: you are not on the way to golf as of
- 9:33Speaker 2: this conversation, Mayor. How are you?
- 9:35Speaker 4: I'm good. How are you, sir?
- 9:37Speaker 2: I'm doing just fine. Doing just fine. Let's get into
- 9:40Speaker 2: the weeds of this one because, oh boy, did we
- 9:44Speaker 2: have a lot to talk about after last night. First off,
- 9:48Speaker 2: I just think in the all-encompassing question, we went from
- 9:52Speaker 2: six preseason games down to four preseason games, and we're
- 9:56Speaker 2: left just kind of questioning the validity of this. But
- 9:59Speaker 2: my goodness, after Thursday night, you still in the preseason
- 10:03Speaker 2: games here down the road?
- 10:04Speaker 4: Well, I think, you know what, the one thing Thursday
- 10:08Speaker 4: showed us, you know, just because of the rule, do play,
- 10:11Speaker 4: have to play, can't play, can't play, etc. I think
- 10:14Speaker 4: what we saw on Thursday was that there is at
- 10:19Speaker 4: least a small need for some preseason. I think Lane
- 10:23Speaker 4: kind of made that abundantly clear after the game. You know,
- 10:26Speaker 4: I talked about sloppy play and talked about how, you know, hey,
- 10:31Speaker 4: most of our guys haven't played a real game in months.
- 10:34Speaker 4: And they were slow to start and not great. And so,
- 10:38Speaker 4: you know, I don't know what you need preseason-wise. Four
- 10:41Speaker 4: seems to be right, to be honest with you. I
- 10:43Speaker 4: think you get a couple games with the kids before
- 10:47Speaker 4: they go back to juniors or the AHL. and then
- 10:50Speaker 4: you get one or two games with the Vets, and
- 10:52Speaker 4: away you go. I think that's probably a good number,
- 10:54Speaker 4: but I do think that those first, especially the first 25,
- 10:58Speaker 4: 30 minutes of the game on Thursday against Calgary showed that,
- 11:02Speaker 4: veteran or not, you do need a little bit of
- 11:04Speaker 4: work before the regular season starts.
- 11:06Speaker 2: 69 minutes in penalties were given out. 65 came in
- 11:11Speaker 2: the second period. It felt like a throwback game, but
- 11:15Speaker 2: this all had a little bit of a stench of...
- 11:18Speaker 2: Sunday carrying over with Brendan Offman, maybe taking liberties here
- 11:23Speaker 2: at Kraken Players. I talked to some of the guys
- 11:26Speaker 2: in the room and it appeared to be that way.
- 11:28Speaker 2: But then all of a sudden we saw Pandora's box
- 11:31Speaker 2: open up at about the 443 mark. And then Vili
- 11:35Speaker 2: Odovinen absolutely tees up Othman. Down he goes. Odovinen gets tackled.
- 11:42Speaker 2: And pretty much we had everything happen except for maybe
- 11:45Speaker 2: a guest appearance by the Hanson brothers. So let's begin
- 11:49Speaker 2: with the story of the day right here. Physicality, and
- 11:52Speaker 2: I'll get deeper into the weeds with Odovinen's fine and
- 11:56Speaker 2: the meaning here of this. But is this a sign, Ian,
- 12:00Speaker 2: that we're seeing crack at hockey again? turn into tough
- 12:04Speaker 2: to play against hockey, as in mess with the hornet's
- 12:08Speaker 2: nest and find out?
- 12:10Speaker 4: I think to a certain extent, I think you've got
- 12:12Speaker 4: a team, Mike, that has been too easy to play
- 12:15Speaker 4: against in the past. And I don't think that's not
- 12:19Speaker 4: saying anything earth-shattering or groundbreaking. I think we all know that.
- 12:23Speaker 4: You know, we think back to all the broadcasts with
- 12:26Speaker 4: our great friend Edzo and how many times he'd say, Johnny,
- 12:29Speaker 4: where's the response? We've got to be responsive, Johnny, right?
- 12:32Speaker 4: And And I, you know, I, you know, like our
- 12:38Speaker 4: great editor on the video side on Kraken Hockey Network,
- 12:41Speaker 4: our great, our great video editor puts all our stuff together.
- 12:44Speaker 4: Stu Beachy, college hockey. And he had a great line
- 12:47Speaker 4: on Thursday. We're watching the game. You and him and
- 12:49Speaker 4: I were up together. And he said, hockey, I think
- 12:52Speaker 4: it's so true. Hockey is not a nice sport.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Yes.
- 12:55Speaker 4: And it's not, it's not a nice sport. And Stu's right.
- 12:59Speaker 4: It's not a nice sport. It's hard. it's, and you
- 13:03Speaker 4: need to be playing hard and be hard to play against.
- 13:07Speaker 4: That doesn't mean you drop the mitts at the, you know,
- 13:09Speaker 4: this isn't, this isn't the WHL and in the, you know,
- 13:14Speaker 4: mid eighties and early nineties type of stuff or the old,
- 13:17Speaker 4: you know, the old central league and stuff like that.
- 13:21Speaker 4: That's not what this is. It's, you just have to
- 13:25Speaker 4: be hard to play against. And, You also have to
- 13:27Speaker 4: know as an opponent that you can't take liberties with
- 13:30Speaker 4: guys on the other team without there being some sort
- 13:34Speaker 4: of response. And, you know, I thought when Temetskevich got hit,
- 13:40Speaker 4: and that might have been a good hit, to be
- 13:42Speaker 4: honest with you. It's pretty close.
- 13:44Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 13:44Speaker 4: Borderline. But to see Kapokako and others jump in immediately
- 13:49Speaker 4: to defend his teammate.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Berkeley Catton also. Vince Dunn.
- 13:53Speaker 4: Berkeley. Yeah. Yeah. Berkeley was a little more hesitant because
- 13:57Speaker 4: he thought his next teammate in Spokane. I kind of
- 14:03Speaker 4: joke about that because, listen, Berkeley did his thing last year,
- 14:07Speaker 4: as did Matty Beneers. But now it's time for others
- 14:11Speaker 4: to step up. I think everybody's bigger when Douglas is
- 14:14Speaker 4: on the bench. I don't think there's any doubt about that.
- 14:17Speaker 4: Everyone becomes a little bit bigger, a little tougher. You
- 14:21Speaker 4: grow a couple inches, but I thought that was a
- 14:24Speaker 4: great response. The other hit and, you know, all of
- 14:27Speaker 4: a sudden, you know, and Dunner's out there going after, like,
- 14:29Speaker 4: and I just, I just think, you know, Lane has
- 14:33Speaker 4: been wanting that for a while, all of last year.
- 14:36Speaker 4: And again, it's not dropping the Mitch every second and
- 14:40Speaker 4: things like that. It's just, you've got to, and be
- 14:42Speaker 4: hard to play against. Like be hard. You don't have
- 14:46Speaker 4: as much skill as most teams in the league. You
- 14:48Speaker 4: don't have the 50, 50, 60 goal scores on your team.
- 14:51Speaker 4: So how do you make up for that? will be
- 14:53Speaker 4: just a hard team to play against, and I think
- 14:55Speaker 4: that's what we saw Thursday.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Curtis Douglas was also given a game misconduct along with
- 15:00Speaker 2: Villiata Vinen at 722 when that whole melee went down. Ian,
- 15:06Speaker 2: we saw it, you saw it, I saw it, and
- 15:09Speaker 2: the look that Douglas gave right toward the Calgary Flames
- 15:12Speaker 2: bench could basically melt the entire surface, but I thought
- 15:16Speaker 2: you touched on a great point just a few moments ago.
- 15:20Speaker 2: When you have Curtis Douglas in the lineup, everyone feels
- 15:24Speaker 2: five inches taller and this is what a tough guy
- 15:27Speaker 2: can bring to your lineup and to me, a big
- 15:31Speaker 2: reason why that they brought him on board here in
- 15:32Speaker 2: the first place.
- 15:34Speaker 4: I'll just, I'll reference another team for a second. I
- 15:36Speaker 4: think the Columbus Blue Jackets are a good one.
- 15:39Speaker 1: You know what?
- 15:40Speaker 4: With Olivier, guys don't take advantage of dudes. Yep. Right? Like,
- 15:44Speaker 4: you just don't. You know, like, and it's just, And
- 15:48Speaker 4: I think Douglas knows his role. You know, he could
- 15:51Speaker 4: play a little bit. I know Lane, you know, has
- 15:53Speaker 4: talked about he's got pretty good hands, learning the system
- 15:56Speaker 4: still and all that. But, you know, I think when
- 15:58Speaker 4: you have a guy like that, it's, you know, it's
- 16:02Speaker 4: the old term in international politics, deterrence, right? There's a
- 16:07Speaker 4: deterrent there. And, you know, the deterrence is like, oh. Yeah,
- 16:13Speaker 4: I thought the Douglas part was, the best part of
- 16:15Speaker 4: the Douglas thing is after the not the first one,
- 16:17Speaker 4: the second incident, not the third, but the second incident
- 16:21Speaker 4: when he was still out there and they're going through
- 16:23Speaker 4: everything and talking to people and all that. And he
- 16:26Speaker 4: was standing out, you know, he was on the ice
- 16:28Speaker 4: over the boards, just standing there looking at the Calgary bench. And,
- 16:31Speaker 4: you know, like, it's all right. Like, just know we're here, right?
- 16:36Speaker 4: We're here. I just, I like that a lot. The
- 16:41Speaker 4: team needs that, especially if they're going to have some
- 16:43Speaker 4: younger players. Not the biggest lineup in the world, top
- 16:46Speaker 4: to bottom. You've got to have a little bit of something.
- 16:49Speaker 4: You've got to have some juice. I don't want to
- 16:51Speaker 4: see Bobby McMahon, you know, throwing knuckles, throwing fists with
- 16:54Speaker 4: guys and so forth. That's not something anybody needs to see. Although, boy,
- 16:59Speaker 4: he stepped up and Lane mentioned him on Thursday night after.
- 17:02Speaker 4: He's like, yeah, he fought a tough dude. You know,
- 17:04Speaker 4: I give him credit. In Seattle, they need a guy
- 17:09Speaker 4: like Bobby McMahon. to put up 40-plus goals, not throw
- 17:14Speaker 4: 40-plus punches in a season. But still, willing to do it, right?
- 17:19Speaker 4: Willing to do it, and I thought that was important.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Given the fact that Calgary played young, but what happened
- 17:25Speaker 2: Thursday night was just absolutely nothing short of, I mean,
- 17:30Speaker 2: just a mess. Let's not forget here that these two
- 17:33Speaker 2: teams play not once, but twice this next week. So
- 17:36Speaker 2: assuming Curtis Douglas makes this team Do you think he
- 17:41Speaker 2: suits up on opening night?
- 17:43Speaker 4: Has to. Has to. You know, it's hard with this
- 17:49Speaker 4: team because I know like last year they depended on
- 17:51Speaker 4: that fourth line to contribute and chip in offensively and
- 17:53Speaker 4: some things like that. And not to say he can't,
- 17:56Speaker 4: but I think, you know, what's your fourth line? Is
- 18:01Speaker 4: your fourth line a team that's got a bunch of
- 18:03Speaker 4: guys that are going to be hard to play against? Well,
- 18:05Speaker 4: they were last year. I mean, you think what Melanson
- 18:08Speaker 4: and Winterton– and say it was Myers or whoever else
- 18:11Speaker 4: is out there, I think they brought an element in
- 18:15Speaker 4: terms of physicality that was needed. I mean, but the
- 18:19Speaker 4: Calgary thing is a little different because, you know, most
- 18:21Speaker 4: of the guys who line up Thursday aren't going to
- 18:22Speaker 4: be here for those regular season games. Those guys are
- 18:25Speaker 4: AHL guys, you know. One kid got sent back down
- 18:28Speaker 4: to Spokane on Friday. But I don't know. He's there
- 18:33Speaker 4: for a reason. It doesn't help you to have him
- 18:35Speaker 4: not dressed. I mean, there's a little bit of competition
- 18:39Speaker 4: at the bottom, you know, for those final three spots
- 18:41Speaker 4: for that fourth line. You know, you can make arguments
- 18:44Speaker 4: for a bunch of different dudes, right? You can say, well,
- 18:47Speaker 4: should Gaudreau be in there? You know, I think Myers
- 18:50Speaker 4: will get sent down, but I think he has to
- 18:52Speaker 4: clear waivers, so I don't know. You know, Winterton's a
- 18:55Speaker 4: good penalty killer for you. Mellie is Mellie. Like, he
- 18:59Speaker 4: does his thing, and I think that's something that's much needed.
- 19:03Speaker 4: Every guy, you know, and I hear it. when Melanson's
- 19:07Speaker 4: on the ice, every guy that's out there, like every defenseman,
- 19:10Speaker 4: every time a puck's dumped in, those D-men have their
- 19:12Speaker 4: heads on a swivel, right? Like, you want that. And
- 19:16Speaker 4: I think they need that. And then Douglas obviously, you know,
- 19:18Speaker 4: brings a different element. I mean, how much bigger is
- 19:20Speaker 4: Jacob Melanson if Curtis Douglas is in? Oh, man. Right?
- 19:24Speaker 4: You know, I mean, he's a little Tasmanian devil as
- 19:27Speaker 4: it is. I mean, man, at that point. So, yeah,
- 19:30Speaker 4: I mean, I think time and place probably depends on
- 19:31Speaker 4: the opponent. You may not use it against a Vegas,
- 19:34Speaker 4: for example, but Other teams, you may want to go
- 19:37Speaker 4: down that road. But, yeah, I think he brings a
- 19:40Speaker 4: much-needed deterrent to this team.
- 19:42Speaker 2: As we first heard on the Ian Furness Show on Friday,
- 19:45Speaker 2: here's Ville Adovainen meeting with 93.3 KJR on the response
- 19:52Speaker 2: after Thursday night's game and also the incident with Brendan Othman. Ville,
- 19:57Speaker 2: first off, I want to kind of go back through
- 19:58Speaker 2: last night just from how things developed physically and emotionally.
- 20:03Speaker 2: What was your take on how that game progressed?
- 20:05Speaker 7: Well, obviously, there was a couple of fights before.
- 20:10Speaker 10: That my incident and then um so it was kind
- 20:14Speaker 10: of a fiery game and then you know the previous
- 20:17Speaker 10: game he caught me with a high hit and then
- 20:21Speaker 10: um you know I feel like he was chirping us
- 20:24Speaker 10: during that game and then um yeah he hit me
- 20:27Speaker 10: again and then just chuck him up I mean did
- 20:31Speaker 10: it go a little over yeah maybe a little bit
- 20:34Speaker 10: and then um so I got fined for that and
- 20:37Speaker 10: that's it is what it is but um Yeah, my
- 20:40Speaker 10: game's physical, and, you know, that's really it.
- 20:43Speaker 8: What'd you make out of your teammates and how also
- 20:45Speaker 8: they responded?
- 20:46Speaker 10: No, they were very supportive and, like, you know, we're
- 20:49Speaker 10: a tight team here, as you could see yesterday. So, yeah, no,
- 20:53Speaker 10: it's good to see that, like, togetherness within the group.
- 20:57Speaker 8: As a player who's trying to make it up here full-time,
- 21:00Speaker 8: what's the message here from Lane, the coaching staff, and
- 21:02Speaker 8: how you've been taking this in here for a training
- 21:04Speaker 8: camp as far as your game is concerned?
- 21:06Speaker 10: You know, obviously, like I said, My game has to
- 21:09Speaker 10: be physical, defend well, have good sticks. So, you know,
- 21:13Speaker 10: kind of build from.
- 21:17Speaker 7: That end.
- 21:18Speaker 10: Like that's my main focus, like be hard to play
- 21:19Speaker 10: against and all that. And then, you know, bring my
- 21:22Speaker 10: skating and, you know, passing through that. But yeah, you know,
- 21:28Speaker 10: just play my best game.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Ian, do we think with Vili Adovainen's game after Thursday
- 21:34Speaker 2: night's increased his stock maybe to make this roster, yes
- 21:38Speaker 2: or no?
- 21:40Speaker 4: Well, I go back. I thought he was one of
- 21:41Speaker 4: the better players before he got kicked out, Mike, honestly.
- 21:45Speaker 4: I thought he had a really strong game before he
- 21:48Speaker 4: got the game misconduct. And then that certainly, that response,
- 21:55Speaker 4: that coach likes that kind of response. You know, I
- 21:58Speaker 4: don't know who makes the decisions as far as the roster.
- 22:00Speaker 4: Is that bot? Is it lane? Is it a combo? Probably. But, Like,
- 22:04Speaker 4: I can tell you right now, that's something that Lane
- 22:06Speaker 4: Lambert would like. You know, I like the thought, he's
- 22:09Speaker 4: chirping us. All right, away we go. Like, that's just, that's,
- 22:13Speaker 4: but I thought I loved his game before he got
- 22:16Speaker 4: the game misconduct. We were talking about that, you know,
- 22:18Speaker 4: the three of us up there, right? And we all
- 22:21Speaker 4: kind of thought, wow, this guy, this guy's trying to
- 22:23Speaker 4: make the hockey team. You know, we've seen, you know,
- 22:25Speaker 4: we've seen that happen. I thought Ryan, you know, Ryan
- 22:27Speaker 4: Winterton last year was a great example. He made the
- 22:29Speaker 4: hockey team out of camp, right? And, you know, you've
- 22:32Speaker 4: got to have you know, I asked, I talked to
- 22:35Speaker 4: Lane before, I guess it was after the first practice,
- 22:38Speaker 4: first day of training camp, I talked to him about,
- 22:41Speaker 4: you know, competition, you know, and every coach and every
- 22:43Speaker 4: sport talks about competition, but then you kind of look around,
- 22:45Speaker 4: is there really competition? Is it, is that legit competition
- 22:48Speaker 4: or is it, you know, we're just going to say
- 22:50Speaker 4: there's competition. He said, you got to have competition. You
- 22:52Speaker 4: got to give opportunities for guys to come in and
- 22:55Speaker 4: earn a spot. You ask yourself, okay, so like, what's the,
- 23:00Speaker 4: What's the third pair and who's the seventh defenseman? Do
- 23:03Speaker 4: they go with Cale Fleury again, who's been here for
- 23:06Speaker 4: a long time, and off and on, up and down,
- 23:08Speaker 4: all that? I don't know. I think Otto had a
- 23:13Speaker 4: pretty strong case for himself, that's for sure. We'll see
- 23:17Speaker 4: where it takes us when they figure out the final roster.
- 23:21Speaker 2: There's one more game to figure this out as, again,
- 23:23Speaker 2: 4 p.m. is a face-off against the Canucks coming up
- 23:26Speaker 2: later on today. But Lane Lambert spoke with the media
- 23:29Speaker 2: on Friday where we saw perhaps a moment of growth
- 23:33Speaker 2: in culture. But how do we feel about the word
- 23:36Speaker 2: response tied into that? Here's Lane Lambert meeting with the
- 23:40Speaker 2: media on Friday.
- 23:41Speaker 11: If you have to have a response, I like the
- 23:42Speaker 11: word response. I like the word initiate better. So, you know,
- 23:46Speaker 11: but certainly. If you're talking about the physicality and that stuff,
- 23:50Speaker 11: I thought we stuck together well. And if you're talking
- 23:52Speaker 11: about the comeback in the third period, I thought our
- 23:55Speaker 11: team got better as the game went on. There was,
- 23:59Speaker 11: I guess, some noticeable rust or cobwebs or whatever, I thought.
- 24:08Speaker 11: When we first got out there, I thought our goaltender
- 24:10Speaker 11: played really well for us. So I'm looking forward to
- 24:12Speaker 11: the game tomorrow and, you know, we need our guys
- 24:15Speaker 11: to get into a little more of a rhythm.
- 24:16Speaker 2: And this is a game that had that flurry of
- 24:18Speaker 2: penalties and melees as well. The Kraken had to dig
- 24:21Speaker 2: themselves out of a 3-1 hold to win 4-3 in
- 24:24Speaker 2: a shootout. Ian, your reaction to Lane Lambert on Friday?
- 24:27Speaker 4: Well, first of all, I love the term initiate. Yes.
- 24:30Speaker 4: I love that term. I love that term. Um, You know,
- 24:34Speaker 4: he's trying to build a culture. He's trying to build
- 24:36Speaker 4: a mindset, you know, and it doesn't happen overnight. It
- 24:40Speaker 4: doesn't even happen in one season. But I love that thought.
- 24:44Speaker 4: You know, and he's right, though. We talked about, you know,
- 24:46Speaker 4: how many preseason games are needed. Well, I mean, he
- 24:48Speaker 4: just told you, you need to get something out there.
- 24:51Speaker 4: I thought it was an interesting game, you know, of
- 24:53Speaker 4: all the lines out there. I think, you know, I
- 24:56Speaker 4: like the captain line a lot as the game went on.
- 24:59Speaker 4: I thought that was, I thought they had a really,
- 25:01Speaker 4: really strong, really probably 60 minutes, you know, with a
- 25:05Speaker 4: couple of exceptions. There's a little rust and a turnover here. And,
- 25:08Speaker 4: you know, but I think you could see, you know,
- 25:11Speaker 4: you could see what that line is capable of, which
- 25:13Speaker 4: I really enjoyed. I'm not so sure we won't see
- 25:17Speaker 4: some moving around with some parts of the top six.
- 25:20Speaker 4: To be honest with you, Mike, I think I'll be
- 25:22Speaker 4: curious to see what he does tonight. Does he go
- 25:24Speaker 4: with those same, are the top nine, are they the
- 25:28Speaker 4: same or not? Like, I'm really curious to see what
- 25:30Speaker 4: Lane does with that tonight. But I think, I think
- 25:33Speaker 4: there's an opportunity to build a little bit more speed
- 25:36Speaker 4: on the veneers line, but I'm not sure if he'll
- 25:38Speaker 4: go down that road. I think we know the center rotation, one, two, three.
- 25:42Speaker 4: I like Shane on the wall a lot. I thought
- 25:45Speaker 4: he had a strong game, Shane Wright. So... Yeah, I
- 25:49Speaker 4: think it'll be interesting to see what the top nine
- 25:52Speaker 4: look like, the top three lines.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Yeah, Lane gave us a hint that he's looking to
- 25:56Speaker 2: kind of keep things maybe together for how long. I mean,
- 25:59Speaker 2: who the heck knows? And that could depend upon, I think,
- 26:01Speaker 2: a little bit of how the Baneers line continues to
- 26:04Speaker 2: progress if they can. He mentioned that there was a
- 26:07Speaker 2: little bit of disconnect early on with Berkeley Cat and
- 26:10Speaker 2: his line, but you and I were talking about this.
- 26:12Speaker 2: You kind of chalked this up, especially in period one
- 26:15Speaker 2: on Thursday night to just some plain old rust, which
- 26:19Speaker 2: to be fair, to give them credit, they began to
- 26:22Speaker 2: shake it off after the whole dust-up back in period two,
- 26:26Speaker 2: and then period three had that comeback. So I think
- 26:28Speaker 2: for me, Ian, as they face a Canucks team, that
- 26:30Speaker 2: will struggle a lot this season. Thatcher Demko may not
- 26:34Speaker 2: be ready here for opening night. They got Levy Merrill
- 26:38Speaker 2: lining off of waivers from Ottawa. To me, the first
- 26:41Speaker 2: period is going to be very, very telltale with how
- 26:44Speaker 2: ready this team could be in about a few days
- 26:47Speaker 2: from now.
- 26:47Speaker 8: What about you?
- 26:49Speaker 4: Yeah, 48 hours after you play the last game and
- 26:51Speaker 4: you get back out there. And, you know, you should
- 26:54Speaker 4: not look rusty after that, especially after that actual comeback
- 26:58Speaker 4: on Thursday. Yeah, like I said, I think the cat
- 27:01Speaker 4: and lion got really well, got better as the game
- 27:03Speaker 4: went on. They have issues on face-offs. There's no doubt
- 27:07Speaker 4: about that. Like, that's a problem. They've got to get
- 27:10Speaker 4: better in the circle. But, yeah, outside of that, you know,
- 27:14Speaker 4: I thought, you know, it's funny. I thought Chandler Stephenson
- 27:17Speaker 4: had a strong game as the game wore on on Thursday.
- 27:20Speaker 4: I thought he did some really nice things. They've got
- 27:22Speaker 4: to get to figure out the power play and the
- 27:25Speaker 4: penalty kill. You know, one thing we haven't talked about, Mike,
- 27:28Speaker 4: and this will be, I think, a storyline going into
- 27:30Speaker 4: the season. If we want to go back and, you know,
- 27:32Speaker 4: we're all doing the post-mortem right now and why the Mariners'
- 27:35Speaker 4: season went off the rails and why they weren't good
- 27:37Speaker 4: and why they didn't make the playoffs. And you can
- 27:40Speaker 4: point to certain things. And, you know, it would be,
- 27:42Speaker 4: you know, defense, for example, like the worst defensive team
- 27:45Speaker 4: in Major League Baseball by most metrics. I think with
- 27:48Speaker 4: Seattle last year, if you look at the Kraken, What
- 27:51Speaker 4: was one of the biggest problems? It was penalty kill.
- 27:53Speaker 4: It was awful. If they were middle of the pack
- 27:58Speaker 4: on the PK last year, I have to think that
- 28:01Speaker 4: they're in the playoff race up until the final day
- 28:03Speaker 4: or two. Maybe even get in.
- 28:05Speaker 2: I mean, they were still in that playoff race in April.
- 28:09Speaker 4: Right? But that penalty kill was so bad. Like, so bad.
- 28:14Speaker 4: And the power play was great for the first, what, 50, 60%
- 28:18Speaker 4: of the season, and it kind of dropped off a
- 28:20Speaker 4: little bit, too. You've got to be better on special teams.
- 28:22Speaker 4: I think Saturday night and tonight is a big night
- 28:25Speaker 4: for special teams. Try to get that going a little
- 28:27Speaker 4: bit before you get the real deal next Thursday.
- 28:30Speaker 1: All right.
- 28:30Speaker 2: Looking forward to it. You're going to be back on
- 28:32Speaker 2: TV also in the not-too-distant future. Keep up the great work,
- 28:36Speaker 2: my friend. Let's get through the rain. Enjoy as much
- 28:39Speaker 2: golf as you can because there's not much more left
- 28:41Speaker 2: of it. But in the meantime, Mayer, appreciate this.
- 28:44Speaker 4: Thank you, bud.
- 28:44Speaker 7: Thanks, Mike. Take care.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Good stuff, Ian. Thank you very much. That is the
- 28:47Speaker 2: mayor of Maple Valley Plus, TV host for the Kraken
- 28:51Speaker 2: Hockey Network, Ian Furness, with us as we get set
- 28:53Speaker 2: for the fourth and final matchup on the Kraken preseason schedule.
- 28:57Speaker 2: Second time they will take on the Vancouver Canucks. It
- 29:00Speaker 2: was one week ago the Kraken took care of Vancouver
- 29:03Speaker 2: in the preseason opener. That was a 4-2 victory at
- 29:06Speaker 2: Climate Pledge Arena, backstopped by 14 saves on 14 shots
- 29:10Speaker 2: from Joey Decord. Nikkei Koko taking over, stopping four of
- 29:14Speaker 2: six in the third period. Good enough for the win.
- 29:17Speaker 2: And much of the Kraken offense who had anything to
- 29:19Speaker 2: do with that game, they're now in Coachella Valley. Yanni Newman,
- 29:23Speaker 2: Ty Nelson, Logan Morrison scored. Jake O'Brien is the only
- 29:26Speaker 2: leftover right now on the goal scoring side from that game.
- 29:30Speaker 2: Of course, he is day-to-day with a lower body injury,
- 29:33Speaker 2: leaving the Kraken right now with one more game before
- 29:36Speaker 2: making presumably their final roster cuts. Many are saying the Canucks,
- 29:41Speaker 2: who are in a full rebuild, could be in for
- 29:43Speaker 2: a rough season, and the preseason hasn't been that much different.
- 29:47Speaker 2: They're 0-3 right now under head coach Manny Malhotra. They
- 29:50Speaker 2: fell 2-1 to Edmonton in their last game Thursday. Linus
- 29:54Speaker 2: Carlsen had the only Canucks goal today. Coming at 6-0-1,
- 29:57Speaker 2: a period two on the man advantage. Nikita Tolopilo started
- 30:02Speaker 2: the game, played 40 minutes, and took the loss in
- 30:04Speaker 2: net with 12 saves on 14 shots. Remember this guy?
- 30:09Speaker 2: Chris Rieger backed him up in the third period. He
- 30:11Speaker 2: turned in a perfect 7-of-7 effort. He is in Canucks
- 30:15Speaker 2: camp on a PTO while Vancouver tries to figure out
- 30:19Speaker 2: their goaltending situation. Thatcher Demko reportedly doubtful for opening night
- 30:24Speaker 2: last week. He is still dealing with a hip ailment.
- 30:26Speaker 2: In the meantime, the Canucks bringing Levy Marilinen into the
- 30:29Speaker 2: fold from Ottawa. The Canucks claiming him off of waivers.
- 30:33Speaker 2: We'll get matters sorted out for you before the 4 p.m. face-off.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Once again, join us on Sports Radio 950 KJR. Everett Fitzhugh,
- 30:41Speaker 2: Al Koniski in the booth from Rogers Arena as the
- 30:44Speaker 2: Kraken aiming to run the table in four preseason games.
- 30:48Speaker 2: I'll join you as well from Network Central for your
- 30:50Speaker 2: entire coverage throughout the entire day. Once again, big thank
- 30:54Speaker 2: you to Brandon Montour and Ian Furness. And for Kraken
- 30:58Speaker 2: this morning, I'm Mike Benton. Enjoy the game.
