- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is Tuesday, it's February
- 0:15the 17th and it's great to have your company as we are just
- 0:20embarking together on this journey through the book of
- 0:22Hosea where God decides rather than just pleading with the
- 0:26people of Israel of this Northern Kingdom, trying to get
- 0:29them to come back to be faithful to him.
- 0:32He says why don't we try something different?
- 0:34Why don't I get a prophet to mirror my part in the
- 0:39relationship that I have in the covenant with my people and have
- 0:43him marry this prostitute who is unfaithful and that represents
- 0:47Israel's part in our relationship.
- 0:50And through Hosea and through his ongoing love and
- 0:54faithfulness to his unfaithful wife, God can use this as a
- 0:59powerful way to explain his love and his commitment, no matter
- 1:03what Israel does, to always be their God, even though there
- 1:07will be consequences for Israel's unfaithfulness.
- 1:10Oh, what a novel approach. And today we read about the
- 1:13charges against this unfaithful wife and God's love for an
- 1:18unfaithful Israel. So let's do just that, shall we?
- 1:22Holy Spirit, help us see you and your word to us today as we read
- 1:28this chapter together. All right, friends, let us do
- 1:32it. Let us read Hosea chapter 2.
- 1:45In that day, you will call your brothers are me my people.
- 1:49And you will call your sisters Ruhama, the ones I love.
- 1:54But now bring charges against Israel, your mother, for she is
- 1:59no longer my wife and I am no longer her husband.
- 2:03Tell her to remove the prostitute's make up from her
- 2:06face and the clothing that exposes her breasts.
- 2:10Otherwise I will strip her as naked as she was on the day she
- 2:14was born. I will leave her to die of
- 2:17thirst, as in a dry and barren wilderness, And I will not love
- 2:22her children, for they were conceived in prostitution.
- 2:26Their mother is a shameless prostitute and became pregnant
- 2:30in a shameful way. She said I'll run after other
- 2:34lovers and sell myself to them for food and water, for clothing
- 2:38of wool and linen, and for olive oil and drinks.
- 2:42For this reason I will fence her in with thorn bushes.
- 2:45I will block her path with a wall to make her lose her way.
- 2:49When she runs after her lovers, she won't be able to catch them.
- 2:53She will search for them but not find them.
- 2:56Then she will think I might as well return to my husband for I
- 2:59was better off with him than I am now.
- 3:02She doesn't realise it was I who gave her everything.
- 3:05She has the grain, the new wine, the olive oil.
- 3:10I even gave her silver and gold. But she gave all my gifts to
- 3:15Baal. But now I will take back the
- 3:17ripened grain and new wine I generously provided each harvest
- 3:21season. I will take away the wool and
- 3:24linen clothing I gave her to cover her nakedness.
- 3:28I will strip her naked in public while all her lovers look on.
- 3:32No one will be able to rescue her from my hands.
- 3:36I will put an end to her annual festivals, her new moon
- 3:40celebrations and her Sabbath days, all her appointed
- 3:43festivals. I will destroy her grapevines
- 3:47and fig trees, things she claims her lovers gave her.
- 3:51I will let them grow into tangled thickets there.
- 3:54Only wild animals will eat the fruit.
- 3:57I will punish her for all those times when she burned incense to
- 4:01her images of Baal, when she put on her earrings and jewels and
- 4:06went out to look for her lovers but forgot all about me, says
- 4:11the Lord. But then I will win her back
- 4:15once again. I will lead her into the desert
- 4:18and speak tenderly to her there. I will return her vineyards to
- 4:23her and transform the valley of Trouble into a gateway of hope.
- 4:28She will give herself to me there, as she did long ago when
- 4:32she was young, when I freed her from her captivity in Egypt.
- 4:36When that day comes, says the Lord, you will call me my
- 4:41husband instead of my master. O Israel, I will wipe the many
- 4:47names of Baal from your lips, and you will never mention them
- 4:51again. On that day I will make a
- 4:53covenant with all the wild animals and the birds of the sky
- 4:58and the animals that scurry along the ground so they will
- 5:01not harm you. I will remove all weapons of war
- 5:05from the land, all swords and bows, so you can live unafraid
- 5:10in peace and safety. I will make you my wife forever,
- 5:15showing you righteousness and justice, unfailing love and
- 5:19compassion. I will be faithful to you and
- 5:22make you mine, and you will finally know me as the Lord.
- 5:27In that day. I will answer, says the Lord.
- 5:31I will answer the sky as a pleads for clouds, and the sky
- 5:34will answer the earth with rain. Then the earth will answer the
- 5:38thirsty cries of the grain, the grapevines and the olive trees,
- 5:43and they in turn will answer Jezreel God plants.
- 5:50At that time I will plant a crop of Israelites and raise them for
- 5:54myself. I will show love to those I
- 5:57called not loved, and to those I called not my people.
- 6:01I will say Now you are my people and they will reply, You are our
- 6:08God. My Lord, this analogy is such a
- 6:21powerful one, and we cannot miss the incredible faithfulness that
- 6:27you offer your people. And Lord, you are unchanging.
- 6:32And so we know that this faithfulness is what you offer
- 6:36us. You say that you will show us
- 6:40your righteousness and your justice with your unfailing love
- 6:45and compassion. My Lord, You are so faithful to
- 6:50us, even when we are fickle and change direction as often as the
- 6:56breeze changes direction on a spring afternoon.
- 7:01But you and your love are forever, my Lord, even when we
- 7:07are wavered, and even as we are turning away from you, you
- 7:10restate your faithfulness and your love to us.
- 7:15Ah, you are a good, good, faithful Lord, and we are so
- 7:19grateful because it's only because of who you are that we
- 7:24can possibly be your people, and that what you have done for us
- 7:29through Jesus that you wipe our slate clean again and again and
- 7:34again, inviting us back into your perfect presence.
- 7:38Even though we are not worthy of it, you still throw open your
- 7:42arms and invite us in. So we are so grateful and we
- 7:48love you and we thank you for all that you have done for us
- 7:53through Jesus. And so we pray all of this in
- 7:55His redeeming name, Amen.
