Sam: Hey, welcome back to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're talking about Own It. Love It. Make It Work. by Carson Tate. So here's the thing I keep circling on, and I want to get your take. What if the problem isn't your job?
• 0:15
Sophie: Hi there Sam. Yeah, that's exactly the provocation this book makes. Carson Tate argues that most of us don't need to quit and move to a tropical island. We need to stop being passengers in our own careers and start driving. It's a practical book, not a manifesto.
• 0:33
Sam: And that reframe hit me, because I've definitely done the thing where I'm waiting for a boss to notice me. Waiting for the right project. Waiting for someone else to fix how I feel about Monday morning.
• 0:45
Sophie: Right. And she names that pattern directly. We hand over the keys to our professional satisfaction and then we're shocked when we feel powerless. Her fix is an inside-out approach, and it starts with ownership.
• 1:00
Sam: Okay, so what does ownership actually look like in practice? Because that word gets thrown around a lot.
• 1:05
Sophie: She wants you to stop thinking of yourself as an employee and start thinking of yourself as the CEO of your own professional life. And before you roll your eyes, it's not about becoming an entrepreneur. It's a reframing that changes what questions you ask.
• 1:21
  Sam: Like what?
• 1:23
Sophie: Like what do I want from this chapter of my life? What am I willing to invest? What are my non-negotiables? Those questions are uncomfortable because they put the responsibility back on you. You can't blame the culture anymore.
• 1:37
Sam: Yeah, and I actually pushed back on this when I first read it. It felt a little harsh, like she's letting companies off the hook. But the more I sat with it, the more I think she's saying you can't control the company, but you can control your response to it.
• 1:51
Sophie: Exactly. And she's careful about it too. She's not saying your workplace is fine and you're the problem. She's saying you have more agency than you're using. That's a different claim.
• 2:03
Sam: Okay, so ownership is step one. What's step two?
• 2:07
Sophie: Loving it. And this is the part I found genuinely refreshing, because she doesn't pretend every job is lovable. She admits some tasks are tedious and some environments are genuinely hard. The move isn't to fake enthusiasm. It's to craft your role.
• 2:24
Sam: Role crafting. Say more about that.
• 2:27
Sophie: You identify the parts of your job that energize you and you find ways to do more of them, even without a title change. It's not about overstepping. It's about becoming a creative problem-solver inside your own position. You're redefining the job from the inside.
• 2:44
Sam: I love that, because it's so much more realistic than the advice to just find your passion. Most people can't blow up their lives. But they can shift maybe ten percent of what they do.
• 2:55
Sophie: Right, and she also makes a big deal about relationships. She argues we massively underestimate how much daily happiness depends on the people around us. You can have fascinating work and dread your coworkers, and it'll still wear you down.
• 3:11
Sam: Oh, that's so true. Honestly, some of my best work years were on projects that weren't glamorous at all, but I loved the team.
• 3:19
Sophie: Same. And conversely, I've had objectively cool work that felt miserable because the room was cold. She gives practical strategies for that too, like simple appreciation and intentional collaboration.
• 3:32
Sam: Okay, so that's own it, love it. What's the third piece?
• 3:36
Sophie: Make it work. This is where she gets into the nitty-gritty of time, energy, and boundaries. Because even the most engaged person will burn out without systems. You have to design your days around your actual rhythms and priorities.
• 3:51
Sam: And she's pretty anti-hustle culture, right? I remember that standing out.
• 3:55
Sophie: Very. She basically says the people who love their work long-term are not the ones who merged their identity with their job. They're the ones who hold their work lightly. They take it seriously without taking it too seriously.
• 4:09
Sam: That's a great line. And it connects to this idea she has about the energy economy. She argues time management is kind of a myth because time is fixed, but energy is renewable.
• 4:21
Sophie: Yeah, that was one of my favorite sections. She has you audit your energy, so you notice which tasks and interactions leave you depleted versus which ones actually fill you up. Then you adjust accordingly.
• 4:35
Sam: So it's not about cramming more into the day. It's about doing the right things when you're actually at your best.
• 4:41
Sophie: Exactly. And she pairs that with boundary-setting. Learning to say no to opportunities that look good on paper but don't serve your deeper goals. That's a skill most of us never practice.
• 4:53
Sam: There's also this idea in the book I keep thinking about, the career portfolio. Instead of one ladder, you think of your career as a collection of experiences, skills, and contributions.
• 5:06
Sophie: Yes, and it's liberating because it takes the pressure off any single job to be the perfect culmination of your life. You can take a risk in one area because you have stability in another. Setbacks don't feel like your whole identity collapsing.
• 5:21
Sam: And she's honest about the fact that not everyone can just leave. Financial constraints, family stuff, visa situations. For those people, follow your passion is almost cruel advice.
• 5:34
Sophie: She handles that with real sensitivity. She says for a lot of people the goal isn't a dream job. It's making a less than ideal job more bearable and more aligned with your values. Finding pockets of autonomy where you can.
• 5:49
Sam: And then there's the uncomfortable part where she asks whether we're bringing our best selves to work, or whether we're just looking for reasons to be unhappy. That one stung a little.
• 5:58
Sophie: It's not toxic positivity though. She's not saying pretend everything's fine. She's saying your mindset shapes your experience more than you think, and you have more choice in how you interpret things than you realize.
• 6:11
Sam: Right. And there's this idea of professional generosity, shifting from what you're owed to what you can offer. She argues contribution is a deep source of meaning.
• 6:22
Sophie: Which is powerful in moments of frustration, because resentment is a scarcity mindset. Generosity reframes it. And she ties all of this to continuous learning, keeping some sense of forward momentum so you're not just marking time.
• 6:37
Sam: I think the thing I'm actually taking away from this is the CEO question. What do I want from this chapter of my life? Because I've been waiting for someone else to answer that for me, and that's not fair to anyone.
• 6:50
Sophie: And if you want to go deeper, the whole library is over on 7minutebooks.com/app, with over 6,000 fiction and nonfiction titles you can read or listen to in any language. It starts at $2.99 a month, $9.99 a year, or $19.99 for lifetime access.
• 7:12
Sophie: The satisfaction you're looking for isn't out there waiting to be discovered. You create it, day by day, through how you show up. That's the whole book. We'll see you in the next one.
