- 0:32Speaker 2: You know, the Broncos might need to dial down the cute,

- 0:37Speaker 2: Jeff Legwald, brought to you by the International Brotherhood of
- 0:39Speaker 2: Electrical Workers ibe W Local sixty eight. Start with a
- 0:44Speaker 2: job and with a career, Jeff. This Broncos team is
- 0:49Speaker 2: going to the playoffs, and they won ten games in
- 0:54Speaker 2: a year in which the Vegas win total was five
- 0:56Speaker 2: and a half. They were going with a rookie quarter back,
- 1:00Speaker 2: and yet here they are postseason bound. In the big
- 1:04Speaker 2: picture of it all, deaf legwell and how they do it.
- 1:09Speaker 4: Well? They you know, they feasted on people who weren't
- 1:14Speaker 4: quite as good or quite as prepared, or didn't handle
- 1:18Speaker 4: their business as well as they did you know, they're
- 1:22Speaker 4: it's very clear they have a very definitive split in
- 1:26Speaker 4: how things went. You know, when they played the more
- 1:29Speaker 4: successful teams, they were not as successful, but they feasted
- 1:35Speaker 4: on the non playoff teams. You know, they roared through
- 1:39Speaker 4: the NFC South. And that's how you do it. And again,
- 1:42Speaker 4: you only play who's in front of you. And you know,
- 1:46Speaker 4: you don't have to apologize for any victories at all
- 1:49Speaker 4: in the NFL. Ever, but this year especially, we see
- 1:54Speaker 4: a lot of double digit win teams, and we see
- 1:57Speaker 4: a lot of teams, you know, with very few wins,
- 2:02Speaker 4: and there's not much in the middle. And and I
- 2:05Speaker 4: think the Broncos were beneficiary of that because they handled
- 2:09Speaker 4: you know, they didn't they didn't fall victim to the
- 2:13Speaker 4: teams that were either on par with them or worse.
- 2:16Speaker 4: They they they handled it and that's that got them
- 2:19Speaker 4: their playoff spot. And their defense, uh, their defense is
- 2:23Speaker 4: legit good. And that's a good combination to have, and
- 2:27Speaker 4: especially with a rookie quarterback who who handled his business
- 2:32Speaker 4: frankly and and did quite well with what he was presented.
- 2:36Speaker 2: It's exactly what Andy and I were talking about in
- 2:39Speaker 2: the first hour of the show. Jeff because Cincinnati. Why
- 2:42Speaker 2: all you want, don't lose to New England. You know
- 2:45Speaker 2: my start off, complain all you want, don't lose at
- 2:48Speaker 2: home to Tennessee even if Toole was out in that
- 2:51Speaker 2: game like that, That's just it. This Bronco team, they
- 2:55Speaker 2: exactly to your point. They they beat the bad teams.
- 3:01Speaker 2: In fact, they didn't lose a game to a bad
- 3:03Speaker 2: team the entire season, which that in and of itself
- 3:07Speaker 2: says something about about the job Peyton did, about the
- 3:10Speaker 2: professionalism and the veteran leadership inside the locker room. But like,
- 3:14Speaker 2: this Bronco team really never went out and laid a
- 3:17Speaker 2: complete egg this season, and that in it itself is
- 3:21Speaker 2: a hell of an accomplishment.
- 3:24Speaker 4: Yeah, not against somebody bat Now. They had some struggles,
- 3:26Speaker 4: you know, the Gavin Baltimore, but Baltimore's really good. Yeah,
- 3:31Speaker 4: and you look at you know, look at their losses.
- 3:33Speaker 4: It's like a who's who of the quarterback yep, you know, Spiffiness,
- 3:38Speaker 4: you know, Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Mahomes Herbert, you know, justin Herbert.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Yep.
- 3:43Speaker 4: I mean it's just you know, they handled the business.
- 3:48Speaker 4: And look, I've heard coaches for decades tell me that
- 3:53Speaker 4: if you can summon I mean, the Steelers and Tomlin
- 3:57Speaker 4: have made a living on it. If you just handle
- 4:01Speaker 4: the teams you should handle, and the and the ones
- 4:04Speaker 4: that are on par with you, if you play a
- 4:06Speaker 4: little smarter than they do, if your attention to details
- 4:10Speaker 4: a little better than theirs, that you can be in
- 4:13Speaker 4: the playoff mix, even in years when maybe you don't
- 4:17Speaker 4: have the overall talent of some other people, but you
- 4:20Speaker 4: just do things a little bit better. And again, they
- 4:25Speaker 4: they did not have a game or two like last
- 4:28Speaker 4: year where you sort of wonder, okay, how that one
- 4:31Speaker 4: get away from them, and that one's gonna you know,
- 4:35Speaker 4: that one's gonna have an impact, you know, after a
- 4:37Speaker 4: bad loss where you think it will come to to
- 4:42Speaker 4: get you later. And you know, whining about other people
- 4:46Speaker 4: is a playoff tradition too. But you know in the NFL, Jeff.
- 4:51Speaker 3: How have they unlocked this version of Marvin Mims recently?
- 4:54Speaker 3: Because I know we asked you that mid season when
- 4:56Speaker 3: they started running the football with them, But I think
- 4:59Speaker 3: this guy's starting show the kind of receiver I told Nate.
- 5:01Speaker 3: It reminds me of some of the catches he was
- 5:03Speaker 3: making for us of Wilson in training camp last year
- 5:06Speaker 3: where he would go up and win some fifty to
- 5:07Speaker 3: fifty balls. How have we gotten to this place? How
- 5:09Speaker 3: did he both find this chemistry in the passing game.
- 5:13Speaker 4: I think him just being on the field, you know,
- 5:15Speaker 4: he's finally getting snaps. It's been one of the greatest
- 5:19Speaker 4: riddles of this coaching administration as to why you know
- 5:26Speaker 4: he does it in all the moments we see. So
- 5:29Speaker 4: he either is dropping every pass when we aren't at practice,
- 5:33Speaker 4: but the parts we see, he's always done this. And
- 5:39Speaker 4: I don't know what their hesitation has been. I don't know,
- 5:42Speaker 4: you know, they they were far more inclined to play Humphree.
- 5:46Speaker 4: But those snaps are going to MEM's now on a
- 5:48Speaker 4: lot of those situations, and you know, nothing will get
- 5:53Speaker 4: you playing time like the quarterback instantly showing he's comfortable
- 5:59Speaker 4: with you. I mean, bo Nix has thrown Marvin Mims
- 6:02Speaker 4: passes of the variety he would have only thrown Courtland
- 6:07Speaker 4: Sutton for most of this season, and I think that's
- 6:10Speaker 4: very telling, and it's it's an argument the coaches can't
- 6:14Speaker 4: really you know, push against when they see it on
- 6:18Speaker 4: the video. To the quarterback obviously has a comfort level
- 6:22Speaker 4: with him in key situations. And the only guy he's
- 6:26Speaker 4: had a comfort level of that type with all season
- 6:30Speaker 4: has been Sutton. I mean, has thrown to Mims that
- 6:33Speaker 4: you know in the Bengal game to tie it is
- 6:37Speaker 4: you know, you don't throw that with just anybody, even
- 6:40Speaker 4: in a desperation situation, and bo Nicks through that ball,
- 6:44Speaker 4: and he hasn't thrown many passes into that kind of
- 6:47Speaker 4: traffic all season long.
- 6:49Speaker 2: By the way, one of my biggest disappointments yesterday was
- 6:53Speaker 2: he didn't throw a couple of practice deep ball to
- 6:55Speaker 2: Troy Franklin once the game was out of reach, like,
- 6:57Speaker 2: come on, work on it's it's essentially a strimless though
- 7:00Speaker 2: he did hit a couple short we need we need
- 7:02Speaker 2: to hit the deep ball. We got to work on
- 7:04Speaker 2: that connection fellas uh Jeff. Over the over the arc
- 7:07Speaker 2: of seventeen games, where did bow Nicks improve the most?
- 7:13Speaker 4: I think his ability to uh, I mean, he had
- 7:17Speaker 4: he had a few weeks there where the defenses had
- 7:19Speaker 4: reacted to him, and he in turn did what what
- 7:23Speaker 4: players have to do is you you have to adjust
- 7:26Speaker 4: to the adjustments as it were, and and he's been
- 7:31Speaker 4: good about that. And I think Mims's emergence has given
- 7:34Speaker 4: him a second target he's comfortable with, so everything isn't
- 7:39Speaker 4: a dump down when he gets in trouble. He he's
- 7:42Speaker 4: actually been able to make a play or to you know,
- 7:46Speaker 4: when when those would have been dump offs or just
- 7:50Speaker 4: scrambles earlier in the year, because when they gang up
- 7:53Speaker 4: on Sutton, you know, that had been an issue for him,
- 7:56Speaker 4: especially if everybody else was outside the number. So I
- 8:01Speaker 4: think he's done a very good job of sort of
- 8:03Speaker 4: reacting to how people have come at him in recent weeks,
- 8:08Speaker 4: and that will get tested big, you know, this week now.
- 8:12Speaker 4: McDermott is known for being very good at taking your
- 8:17Speaker 4: favorite things away, even when they don't have sort of
- 8:20Speaker 4: the personnel to be dominant all across the field, you know,
- 8:24Speaker 4: sidelight the sideline on you. But he is very good
- 8:28Speaker 4: at sort of removing the things you like best from
- 8:31Speaker 4: the equation.
- 8:32Speaker 3: How did we get to the arrival of Dick Benito
- 8:35Speaker 3: looking back at this season.
- 8:38Speaker 4: You know, he was here last year, it just didn't
- 8:40Speaker 4: translate into sacks. And I think, you know, vance Joseph
- 8:45Speaker 4: has said he found the target was the quote in fact,
- 8:50Speaker 4: you know, and Von Miller has talked to me about
- 8:53Speaker 4: this a lot over the years. Elvis Dumerville has talked
- 8:56Speaker 4: to me a lot. Javon Curse. A sack, impactful sack
- 9:01Speaker 4: isn't always sacking the quarterback. It's sacking the ball and
- 9:06Speaker 4: that that can often lead to sacking the quarterback. But
- 9:11Speaker 4: the best pass rushers attack the ball and they often
- 9:15Speaker 4: get the quarterback along with it because it's it's just
- 9:19Speaker 4: a very technically sound way to attack the guy and
- 9:24Speaker 4: try to get him on the ground. Is if you
- 9:26Speaker 4: attack the ball, you're getting the most important part, and
- 9:30Speaker 4: the quarterback in an attempt to protect that will often
- 9:34Speaker 4: go down. Whereas if you you know, try to sack
- 9:37Speaker 4: him around the legs or make the big hit, they
- 9:40Speaker 4: can spin out of it, they can run away from it.
- 9:43Speaker 4: But if you attack the ball, that turns pressures into sacks.
- 9:48Speaker 4: And he was top five in the league in pressures
- 9:52Speaker 4: last year and this year he hasn't pressured as a
- 9:56Speaker 4: higher rate because he's playing more snaps one, but he
- 10:00Speaker 4: has turned more of those plays into impactful sacks, turnovers,
- 10:06Speaker 4: you know, things that really mess up on offense because
- 10:09Speaker 4: he is attacking the ball.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Yeah, well, they're playing the guy this week where you
- 10:12Speaker 2: got to really focus on attacking the ball. That's Jeff Legwald. Everybody,
- 10:16Speaker 2: he joins us on the Ramos Law Hotline car accident.
- 10:18Speaker 2: You need Ramo's law. He's a medical doctor and an
- 10:21Speaker 2: attorney like the Bo Jackson of lawyers. Visit Ramoslaw dot com.
- 10:25Speaker 2: That's Ramoslaw dot com.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Uh yeah, Jeff.
- 10:28Speaker 2: So now looking at these Buffalo bills here this week,
- 10:32Speaker 2: Josh Allen playing at an MVP level. You mentioned McDermott
- 10:36Speaker 2: right there. I mean really outside of I think Dion
- 10:39Speaker 2: Dawkins like the only other pro bowler on this Buffalo team.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Give us a quick primer. How's Buffalo gotten so good
- 10:46Speaker 2: this season?
- 10:48Speaker 4: Well? They you know, they they won. You know, James
- 10:51Speaker 4: Cook has been a really effective two way player. Uh,
- 10:56Speaker 4: he's probably other than Alan, he is the most important
- 10:59Speaker 4: player in there. I mean's he's a thousand yard rusher
- 11:04Speaker 4: almost five yards of carry. He's their third leading receiver.
- 11:08Speaker 4: I mean when they make things go. He's involved on
- 11:12Speaker 4: a lot of levels. And that's been a position and
- 11:16Speaker 4: a type of player that's given the Broncos some trouble
- 11:19Speaker 4: this year because they they play more man defense than
- 11:22Speaker 4: everybody else. In the league, and that often puts a
- 11:26Speaker 4: guy like Cook on a linebacker and that's a matchup
- 11:30Speaker 4: he's gonna win pretty pretty often. So I think that's
- 11:34Speaker 4: an important part of defending them right now, is how
- 11:38Speaker 4: you handle Cook and Allen's ability to get him the
- 11:41Speaker 4: ball like all over the place, because you know, receiving wise,
- 11:46Speaker 4: they've only got one guy with more than fifty catches.
- 11:50Speaker 4: But you know, they the Kinkid, the tight end and
- 11:54Speaker 4: Cook combined. You know, that's sort of a thousand yard
- 11:59Speaker 4: receiver between the two of them type of thing. And
- 12:02Speaker 4: so it's not necessarily the wide outs that punish you
- 12:06Speaker 4: in their offense. It's the players inside the numbers, inside
- 12:10Speaker 4: the hashes, and that'll be a big deal for the Broncos.
- 12:14Speaker 4: And defensively, they don't do a lot of things particularly well.
- 12:18Speaker 4: I mean, they don't sack the quarterback a ton, and
- 12:22Speaker 4: they've got some interceptions though, so they do force the
- 12:25Speaker 4: ball out of your hand when you don't want to
- 12:28Speaker 4: necessarily do it. But they're opportunistic and up there. Noise
- 12:34Speaker 4: will be a factor. You know, weather's going to be
- 12:36Speaker 4: a factor, you know, and I think it would sort
- 12:40Speaker 4: of behoove the Broncos to sort of make us a
- 12:42Speaker 4: slug it out of fair and take their chances.
- 12:45Speaker 3: All right, I got more Buffalo questions for later in
- 12:47Speaker 3: the week. I want to fan out with some of
- 12:49Speaker 3: the NFL news going on with this one here.
- 12:52Speaker 4: First off, an interesting.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Note from our guy Pella Sero, there but fifteen teams
- 12:58Speaker 3: with ten plus wins these year, and then it seems
- 13:01Speaker 3: like most of the top ten is battling with three
- 13:04Speaker 3: or four wins in the draft order. Why why the
- 13:07Speaker 3: lack of parody almost legy.
- 13:10Speaker 4: I don't know what the.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Word would be, but it just feels like you were
- 13:13Speaker 3: either good or you were bad this year and there
- 13:16Speaker 3: wasn't as much in between.
- 13:18Speaker 4: Oh man, the Broncos record reflects that, and I mean
- 13:21Speaker 4: there's no middle class this year. It's either you have
- 13:24Speaker 4: a quarterback good enough to keep you in the hunt,
- 13:28Speaker 4: or your defense is good enough to keep you in
- 13:30Speaker 4: the hunt, or you're not in the hunt. I mean,
- 13:33Speaker 4: just look at the AFC or actually just look at
- 13:35Speaker 4: the look at all of the quarterbacks still standing. And
- 13:40Speaker 4: in many ways it's it's like two Rookie of the
- 13:43Speaker 4: Year candidates and proven veterans who've been around and done it,
- 13:49Speaker 4: and especially in the AFC. You know, there are basically
- 13:55Speaker 4: two or three playoff spots in the AFC open every
- 13:58Speaker 4: year who who aren't occupy tied by alphas at quarterback
- 14:02Speaker 4: and that makes life very hard in between. And this time,
- 14:07Speaker 4: this time of year fascinates me. It's like when we
- 14:09Speaker 4: all pretend that there's a universe where all thirty two
- 14:14Speaker 4: teams are going to be good, and that all thirty
- 14:17Speaker 4: two teams are going to have a good quarterback, and
- 14:19Speaker 4: that all thirty two teams are going to be good
- 14:21Speaker 4: in the draft, because that's always the tenor at you know,
- 14:27Speaker 4: when people get fired, we need to be better on offense,
- 14:30Speaker 4: or we need to be better, you know, in the draft,
- 14:32Speaker 4: or we need to be deeper. And look, all these
- 14:35Speaker 4: teams that are winning are beating somebody, So you know,
- 14:39Speaker 4: this is the world we're in now. And in the
- 14:41Speaker 4: cap era, having that settled thing at quarterback is a
- 14:48Speaker 4: huge deal and we're seeing it get bigger and bigger
- 14:51Speaker 4: almost every year because again, fifty three man rosters, not
- 14:56Speaker 4: everybody stays healthy. So if you have a core back,
- 15:00Speaker 4: your chances of winning each week are better than other people's.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Jeff legwall to ESPN, Jeff, What were the Chiefs trying
- 15:09Speaker 2: to accomplish yesterday?
- 15:11Speaker 1: What was their goal? And did they meet their goal? Yeah?
- 15:15Speaker 4: I felt like their goal was to fulfill the obligation
- 15:19Speaker 4: of appearing.
- 15:20Speaker 2: I thought that was they're contractually obligated to show up.
- 15:24Speaker 4: They had to have a final game of the season.
- 15:26Speaker 4: I mean, I you know, I'm more than honest enough
- 15:31Speaker 4: to say I missed this one. I thought they would
- 15:33Speaker 4: give some cameos, at least because of the gap, you know,
- 15:38Speaker 4: twenty three twenty four days in between games. I just
- 15:42Speaker 4: you know, that just seems like so much to me
- 15:46Speaker 4: in my little world. But I thought there would be
- 15:49Speaker 4: a few cameos. But he didn't play anybody at any position.
- 15:54Speaker 4: You know, and look backup, players in the NFL are
- 15:56Speaker 4: good football players. I'm not diminishing what it takes to
- 16:01Speaker 4: be in an NFL lineup. Uh, but you know, they
- 16:05Speaker 4: were fighting up in weight class. You know. The Broncos
- 16:08Speaker 4: played their starters deep into the fourth quarter, you know,
- 16:13Speaker 4: because they needed the game.
- 16:14Speaker 1: And they need to work yesterday. Yeah it was.
- 16:17Speaker 4: They needed, no doubt, you know, And but I really
- 16:22Speaker 4: was a little surprised. You know, I knew Mahomes wasn't
- 16:25Speaker 4: gonna play, and Kelsey wasn't gonna play, and Chris Jones
- 16:28Speaker 4: wasn't gonna play. You knew that, but he he really
- 16:31Speaker 4: took it a step further. And we'll we'll see how
- 16:34Speaker 4: it works out. But uh, that inactive list might be
- 16:39Speaker 4: the greatest inactive game day inactive list ever assembled. You know,
- 16:45Speaker 4: three Hall of Fame worthy players on a game d
- 16:49Speaker 4: in active list.
- 16:50Speaker 3: Yeah, might beat the Pro Bowl roster. All right, real quick,
- 16:52Speaker 3: got about a minute. Can you tell everybody, Well, you
- 16:55Speaker 3: told me about Orchard Park and how it gets the
- 16:58Speaker 3: weather when Buffalo doesn't, because I talked about that earlier.
- 17:02Speaker 4: It's you know, I covered the Bills way back in
- 17:04Speaker 4: the in the middle nineties, and Orchard Parks in the
- 17:08Speaker 4: in the snow, one of the snow belts there. So
- 17:11Speaker 4: like you can be in downtown Buffalo and there's not
- 17:15Speaker 4: a flake of snow falling, and you can drive southeast
- 17:20Speaker 4: to Orchard Park and there will be a foot and
- 17:22Speaker 4: a half on the ground. It's just one of those
- 17:24Speaker 4: weird weather phenomenon places, and the stadium just happens to
- 17:30Speaker 4: be in it and it's always windy. I've never covered
- 17:35Speaker 4: a game there that hasn't been windy, and you know
- 17:39Speaker 4: it's it's kind of that humid cold. So the weather
- 17:43Speaker 4: will be an issue for the Broncos, whether they say
- 17:45Speaker 4: it is or not. But it will be a test
- 17:48Speaker 4: for an offense that hasn't been good in the few
- 17:53Speaker 4: times they've had to face weather this year. So I
- 17:56Speaker 4: think it will be something they'll have to consider and
- 17:59Speaker 4: may actually for sim to run the ball a little
- 18:01Speaker 4: more than maybe he wants to.
- 18:04Speaker 2: He's not going to listen to you on that one, Jeff,
- 18:06Speaker 2: Jeff Legwald. Everybody, Yes, Orchard Park where the snow falls
- 18:10Speaker 2: to the ground and the idiots fall on tables. Jeff
- 18:13Speaker 2: Legwald of ESPN, he will have all the coverage all
- 18:16Speaker 2: week long. We'll be talking to him here on Altitude
- 18:18Speaker 2: Sports Radio ninety two to five.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Leggy, good work as always, man, Thank you, Thanks bals.
- 18:22Speaker 1: We'll see you all right, the great Jeff Legwald with
- 18:25Speaker 1: us right there.
