- 0:18Speaker 1: She was twenty four, he was only seventeen.

- 0:42Speaker 1: Then a troubling mystery in Kansas City. A woman is missing,
- 0:47Speaker 1: her car torched, and the last man she was seen
- 0:50Speaker 1: with is under a wreckt Now we reveal his scary past.
- 0:54Speaker 1: His ex girlfriend is missing too.
- 0:56Speaker 5: She basically explained to him that she did I want
- 1:00Speaker 5: to be with him anymore. Then he said he kind of.
- 1:02Speaker 6: Just freaked out.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Crime Watch Daily breaks news on this developing story. Plus,
- 1:09Speaker 1: she was an all American girl.
- 1:11Speaker 7: She loved life and she lived it to the fullest.

- 1:18Speaker 1: lurking underneath.
- 1:19Speaker 8: As police started calling friends and family, everyone brought up
- 1:22Speaker 8: the common theme.
- 1:24Speaker 1: When one of them disappears. A neighbor helps crack the case.
- 1:28Speaker 8: They thought they saw an arm sticking out of this
- 1:30Speaker 8: bundle of blankets right now.

- 1:43Speaker 2: We'll find you again, we always do.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Hey, everyone, Welcome to Crime Watch Daily. I'm Chris Hansen.
- 1:53Speaker 1: We start with a headline making national epidemic teachers being
- 1:57Speaker 1: busted for having sex with their students. Most of the time,
- 2:00Speaker 1: these suspects do their best to crawl into a hole
- 2:03Speaker 1: after they're arrested. That is not the case when it
- 2:05Speaker 1: comes to Mary Beth Haglin. Today, our Jason Mattera is
- 2:09Speaker 1: confronting the outspoken teacher on her forbidden love.
- 2:13Speaker 11: Chris Cedar, Rapids, Iowa, a small town with a population
- 2:16Speaker 11: barely big enough to fill the Los Angeles Colisseum, is
- 2:19Speaker 11: now at the center of a salacious sex scandal. A
- 2:23Speaker 11: twenty four year old, beautiful substitute teacher at this high
- 2:26Speaker 11: school admits to hooking up at one of the students,
- 2:29Speaker 11: having sex with him more than a hundred times. Mary
- 2:34Speaker 11: Beth Haglin is a pretty teacher who always wanted to
- 2:38Speaker 11: instruct children, But within just months of achieving her goal,
- 2:42Speaker 11: Mary Beth threw it all away by giving one student
- 2:46Speaker 11: some very private lessons.
- 2:49Speaker 2: How many times did you have sex with the student?
- 2:54Speaker 3: It was? I can't even count, perhaps a few hundred times.
- 3:03Speaker 11: Now, she's telling her side of the story to Crime
- 3:05Speaker 11: Watch Daily. The twenty four year old had a bright
- 3:08Speaker 11: future with a degree in English and Spanish. She was
- 3:11Speaker 11: awarded the prestigious Full Right Scholarship. After graduating, Mary Beth
- 3:16Speaker 11: became a substitute teacher.
- 3:18Speaker 2: And when you started to teach, how did that make
- 3:19Speaker 2: you feel?
- 3:20Speaker 3: I enjoyed it so much. With subbing, it's a little
- 3:23Speaker 3: bit different because you never know what kind of situation
- 3:25Speaker 3: you're getting into, especially if it's day to day subbing.
- 3:30Speaker 11: The situation mary Beth got herself into a taboo relationship
- 3:35Speaker 11: with the seventeen year old high school student.
- 3:38Speaker 2: How did you meet the student?
- 3:39Speaker 3: This particular student was in my class when I was
- 3:43Speaker 3: a student teacher. He was a good student, and I
- 3:47Speaker 3: always like to reconnect with my better students.
- 3:50Speaker 11: But to say Mary Beth reconnected was an understatement. The
- 3:54Speaker 11: young teacher who rotated among different schools one day found
- 3:57Speaker 11: herself back at the place where she and the student
- 4:00Speaker 11: first met.
- 4:01Speaker 3: He saw me again at Washington High School subbing one day.
- 4:04Speaker 3: He came in to say hi, and I welcomed that.
- 4:08Speaker 11: But that chat in the classroom quickly turned from innocent
- 4:12Speaker 11: to indecent and more than that, downright illegal.
- 4:17Speaker 3: He contacted me on Facebook. It was very persistent in
- 4:22Speaker 3: his contact. He kept asking me to go to coffee,
- 4:27Speaker 3: or to go to lunch, or just hi, how are you?
- 4:30Speaker 3: Why won't you answer me?
- 4:32Speaker 11: Mary Beth claims that at the time, she was in
- 4:34Speaker 11: an abusive relationship with her then boyfriend. One night, after
- 4:38Speaker 11: what she calls a particularly horrible episode with her ex,
- 4:41Speaker 11: she reached out for comfort from her soon to be
- 4:44Speaker 11: teenage lover. When was the first time you had sexual
- 4:48Speaker 11: contact with the student?
- 4:50Speaker 3: We had gone to a corn maze in a neighboring town,
- 4:55Speaker 3: and we went to Beaver Park, which was kind of
- 4:59Speaker 3: our out spot. We sat in his parked car and
- 5:05Speaker 3: he started kissing me, and he started touching me.
- 5:10Speaker 11: After their first encounter, twenty four year old Mary Beth
- 5:13Speaker 11: says she and her student are confronted by police as
- 5:17Speaker 11: they sat in the car.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Did it ever crossed your mind. Wow, my gosh, I
- 5:21Speaker 2: just royally screwed myself.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Well, to be honest, I didn't have much time to
- 5:27Speaker 3: think that because the police actually interrupted us. They thought
- 5:31Speaker 3: that I was being raped. I just said no, this
- 5:36Speaker 3: was consensual.
- 5:37Speaker 11: Because it was right after the police incident, the forbidden
- 5:42Speaker 11: relationship heated up even more. Mary Beth and her teen
- 5:47Speaker 11: dream boy rendezvoing for dinner in nearby towns places they
- 5:51Speaker 11: wouldn't be recognized, hooking up at his mom's house when
- 5:54Speaker 11: she wasn't home, and of course at Beaver Park in
- 5:57Speaker 11: their mobile love shack the boys car. Most teachers want
- 6:01Speaker 11: to be positive role models for their students, one of
- 6:04Speaker 11: the reasons why they get into the.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Profession of teaching.
- 6:06Speaker 11: But your vehicle to be that positive role model and
- 6:09Speaker 11: shape this kid was to have sex with him.
- 6:11Speaker 3: You have to remember that when this was all happening,
- 6:15Speaker 3: I didn't see him as a student. I saw this
- 6:18Speaker 3: as a real relationship.
- 6:20Speaker 11: And like many couples, they had pet names for each other.
- 6:25Speaker 3: He would call me his Empress. He would call me
- 6:29Speaker 3: his lobster because lobster's mate for life.
- 6:32Speaker 11: So you called him baby kicks, and he called you
- 6:35Speaker 11: his empress. Yes, the saucy sub sent sexy selfies to
- 6:40Speaker 11: her underage lover, but the romance began to unravel when
- 6:44Speaker 11: Mary Beth says he betrayed her and share the racy
- 6:47Speaker 11: snaps with his friends.
- 6:50Speaker 3: I sent him a lot and he saved all of them,
- 6:53Speaker 3: and then he shared them with all of his friends
- 6:57Speaker 3: and they posted them on Twitter. Mark my words, when
- 7:02Speaker 3: the student turns eighteen, I will be prosecuting for sharing
- 7:07Speaker 3: all of those nude photos.
- 7:10Speaker 11: The provocative photos spread like wildfire. Their secret relationship exposed.
- 7:16Speaker 11: Mary Beth says the kids at school were relentless.
- 7:19Speaker 3: They would interrupt class to ask about it.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Be serious, I'm serious, intro class and say what.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Come on, miss Haglin. We know that this is the student.
- 7:33Speaker 11: The dangerous liaison was spiraling out of control. Mary Beth
- 7:37Speaker 11: claims she wanted to end it, but was terrified that
- 7:40Speaker 11: her young lover would retaliate and tell the school principle. Eventually,
- 7:44Speaker 11: word about her extracurricular activities got back to school administrators,
- 7:49Speaker 11: but she says they ignored the rumors, and so she
- 7:51Speaker 11: continued to carry on her relationship with the high school boy.
- 7:55Speaker 11: And that may be true, but you're not blaming the
- 7:57Speaker 11: school for your having sex with the student.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Oh, certainly not.
- 8:02Speaker 11: But with her photos flooding social media, the school finally
- 8:06Speaker 11: took action.
- 8:06Speaker 2: How did you finally get busted?
- 8:09Speaker 3: The administration called me down into their office. They started
- 8:14Speaker 3: to interrogate me, and by the end the principal said, well,
- 8:18Speaker 3: in light of everything, we are going to ask you
- 8:21Speaker 3: to pack up everything, any personal items that you have upstairs,
- 8:25Speaker 3: and please leave.
- 8:28Speaker 11: Mary Beth was fired from her job, but continue to
- 8:31Speaker 11: substitute teach in other school districts, allegedly because of a miscommunication.
- 8:36Speaker 11: She was not removed from the available teacher list and oversite.
- 8:40Speaker 11: Mary Beth disputes, it.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Was not a miscommunication that I was still in the system.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Washington High School staff did not let the substitute system
- 8:52Speaker 3: know why I should not be in the system, and.
- 8:55Speaker 11: The district never reported her to authorities or press criminal charges.
- 8:59Speaker 11: Watch Daily contacted the school for a comment, but they
- 9:03Speaker 11: never returned our calls.
- 9:05Speaker 3: He said, don't worry. We're gonna get through this, whether
- 9:08Speaker 3: we have to leave town and go to Minnesota or
- 9:12Speaker 3: New York or hack even another country.
- 9:14Speaker 2: And what's racing through your mind?
- 9:18Speaker 3: I'm busted up.
- 9:19Speaker 4: Next the torrid affair.
- 9:21Speaker 11: Mary Beth comes face to face with the law and
- 9:24Speaker 11: you'll never guess where the former teacher is working. Hey,
- 9:27Speaker 11: come here, I'm up or should I? We talked to
- 9:31Speaker 11: at Bambi? Which one let me Bambi or Mary Beth?
- 9:35Speaker 11: Crime Watch Daily tracks her down and finds a shocking surprise.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Now back to today's Crime Watch Daily investigation. Forbidden Love.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Mary Beth Hagelin can't stop gushing about the guy she loves.
- 9:50Speaker 1: The problem is she was his teacher and he was
- 9:52Speaker 1: only seventeen. The state forbid them from seeing each other,
- 9:56Speaker 1: but our Jason and Tara busted them getting back together.
- 10:00Speaker 11: A pretty teacher and a seventeen year old student engage
- 10:03Speaker 11: in naughty after school activities. The Sexcapaid secretly sizzled for
- 10:08Speaker 11: nine months and included racy love letters.
- 10:11Speaker 3: I love the way you smell like pizza after a
- 10:13Speaker 3: long day of work, and it drives me crazy wanting
- 10:16Speaker 3: a piece of the crust.
- 10:18Speaker 11: The remain rendezvous spot the teenager's car at a local park.
- 10:23Speaker 4: Do you consider yourself a sexual predator?
- 10:26Speaker 3: I don't. That was a time in my life that
- 10:29Speaker 3: was just so out of character for me, and I
- 10:33Speaker 3: wholly regret my actions and just the person that I
- 10:37Speaker 3: was at that time, But anybody who knows me can
- 10:40Speaker 3: tell you that that's not who I am.
- 10:42Speaker 11: But the illicit relationship comes to a grinding halt when
- 10:46Speaker 11: twenty four year old Mary Beth Haglin is busted.
- 10:49Speaker 2: What does your family think of this entire ordeal?
- 10:52Speaker 3: Mind? Dad cried and my mother yelled at me. They
- 10:57Speaker 3: were not happy.
- 10:58Speaker 11: After her teen lover's mom goes to police and files
- 11:01Speaker 11: a report, the substitute teacher turns herself in.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Do you think you were in love with the student?
- 11:06Speaker 3: In my mind? I was. We certainly said it often
- 11:11Speaker 3: enough to each other.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Do you love him today?
- 11:14Speaker 3: No? I never want to see him again, So.
- 11:16Speaker 11: Once he turned eighteen, you're not planning on contacting him,
- 11:20Speaker 11: not at all. Here's Mary Beth in her mugshot, looking
- 11:24Speaker 11: plain Jane, wearing specs and a little smirf, very different
- 11:28Speaker 11: from the girl in those selfies, made up with a
- 11:31Speaker 11: dramatic cat eye, sticking her tongue out and pouting for
- 11:35Speaker 11: the camera. Mary Beth pleaded not guilty, charged with sexual
- 11:40Speaker 11: exploitation by a school employee. If convicted, she could face
- 11:44Speaker 11: up to two years in prison and spend the next
- 11:46Speaker 11: ten on the sex offender registry.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Do you ever think that would be your life?
- 11:51Speaker 3: No? I thought that I was going to teach, and
- 11:56Speaker 3: that I was going to one day get married and
- 12:00Speaker 3: and have a family. I never thought that I was
- 12:03Speaker 3: going to be rich or famous, and now I well,
- 12:07Speaker 3: I have infamy, one thing that I never wanted.
- 12:11Speaker 11: After Mary Beth was fired from her teaching job, she
- 12:13Speaker 11: worked as a server at a local pizza joint and
- 12:16Speaker 11: at a clothing store. But those gigs didn't last long.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Yesterday I found out that one of my jobs isn't
- 12:22Speaker 3: even going to let me return. They just said, nope,
- 12:25Speaker 3: you can't come back at all.
- 12:26Speaker 2: What are you doing now?
- 12:28Speaker 3: I'm not working?
- 12:29Speaker 4: Well, she is working now.
- 12:32Speaker 11: And look where we found her working the stripper pole
- 12:35Speaker 11: at Woodi's a strip joined along a lonely highway just
- 12:39Speaker 11: a few miles from the school where she used to teach.
- 12:41Speaker 11: Take a look at this video that we've uncovered of
- 12:44Speaker 11: the saucy former substitute teacher perched in a customer's lap
- 12:48Speaker 11: and performing for much older pupils. And take a look
- 12:53Speaker 11: at Mary BET's other shocking video. This was shot just
- 12:56Speaker 11: a few days after she told us she never wanted
- 12:59Speaker 11: to see her, forbid and love her again.
- 13:02Speaker 3: And it's only a few more weeks until my people
- 13:07Speaker 3: love it turns eighteen and then I can finally appe together.
- 13:14Speaker 3: I love you in my lobster.
- 13:17Speaker 4: So which is it?
- 13:19Speaker 11: I'm not convinced that twenty four year old actually wants
- 13:22Speaker 11: to end things with the student, so I went to
- 13:24Speaker 11: Woodies to ask her myself.
- 13:26Speaker 4: So we're outside.
- 13:27Speaker 11: Woodies, that's where Mary Beth works, and she is under
- 13:30Speaker 11: a court order not to have any contact with the
- 13:33Speaker 11: student or she goes back to jail. Guess what we
- 13:35Speaker 11: just saw the student go into Woodies? Are they breaking
- 13:39Speaker 11: the law for love?
- 13:41Speaker 4: My hunch was correct.
- 13:42Speaker 11: They're under fluorescent light in the darkened club is Mary Beth, and,
- 13:47Speaker 11: for the first time seen on camera, her student. The
- 13:50Speaker 11: couple locked in a deep conversation that lasted for about
- 13:54Speaker 11: thirty minutes, but then the newly legal eighteen year old
- 13:57Speaker 11: abruptly leaves.
- 13:58Speaker 4: Could the two have had a spat?
- 14:01Speaker 11: I catch up with mary Beth's boy toy as he
- 14:04Speaker 11: leaves the club.
- 14:05Speaker 4: What are you doing here at wood Ees? Here to
- 14:06Speaker 4: see Mary Beth. My lawyer's name is Anne Brown. She
- 14:10Speaker 4: know she's breaking the law by seeing you.
- 14:12Speaker 1: She looks for she works in seat rapids. You can
- 14:14Speaker 1: speak to my lawyer and.
- 14:16Speaker 4: Mary Beth is under a court order not to see you.
- 14:18Speaker 4: She's no further connor. You're a victim of a such trust.
- 14:21Speaker 10: You would like to discuss anything, you can speak with
- 14:23Speaker 10: my lawyer, Ann Brown.
- 14:24Speaker 4: Did Marybeth give you a lap dance?
- 14:26Speaker 11: Crime Watch Daily reached out to the student's lawyer, who
- 14:28Speaker 11: responded no comment. Next up, Mary Beth poured into a
- 14:33Speaker 11: leopard bodysuit, exits the club.
- 14:36Speaker 4: Hey come here.
- 14:38Speaker 11: Or should uh? We talked to as Bambi, which one
- 14:41Speaker 11: um let me Bambi or Marybeth. We know you're under
- 14:47Speaker 11: a court order not to have any contact with but
- 14:52Speaker 11: he actually was inside today.
- 14:55Speaker 12: Yeah, he came in and he found me and he
- 14:58Speaker 12: said that he wanted and to come back at two,
- 15:01Speaker 12: and so I told him and I said, you need
- 15:04Speaker 12: to walk me out because I don't want that to happen.
- 15:06Speaker 11: But sooner Wood He's bouncer tries to boot us out. Man,
- 15:10Speaker 11: that's fine, We're we're we're not on your property. And
- 15:12Speaker 11: there was a violation of a quarter that took just
- 15:14Speaker 11: took place.
- 15:15Speaker 4: So just let me finish the questions. You pleaded not guilty, but.
- 15:21Speaker 11: You admitted to having sex with this teenager over a
- 15:25Speaker 11: hundred times.
- 15:28Speaker 4: Sounds guilty.
- 15:32Speaker 3: That's the way the court process works to bring it
- 15:34Speaker 3: down your way, stunt.
- 15:39Speaker 4: Don't worry.
- 15:40Speaker 11: We've I've already interviewed Bambi. Any plans to meet up
- 15:43Speaker 11: at Beaver Park or is it no over?
- 15:47Speaker 13: But no?
- 15:48Speaker 12: No, no, no.
- 15:48Speaker 4: No more beaver Park?
- 15:50Speaker 11: No more beaver Park?
- 15:51Speaker 4: But is what he's a new meetup spot?
- 15:53Speaker 3: It's not.
- 15:55Speaker 11: But here's why I don't fully believe you, because after
- 15:59Speaker 11: we did the interview with you, and I have flat
- 16:01Speaker 11: out asked you, you're still in love with him?
- 16:03Speaker 4: Do you care for him?
- 16:04Speaker 11: Do you plan to reconnect with him? You said no,
- 16:07Speaker 11: you were a post and then literally just a few
- 16:09Speaker 11: days later, you said no, you were in love with him,
- 16:12Speaker 11: and you were calling him your lobster and that saying
- 16:16Speaker 11: that you guys were going to rekindle things.
- 16:18Speaker 2: How do you feel?
- 16:20Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 16:21Speaker 1: It's very confusing.
- 16:25Speaker 3: It's confusing because of all of those.
- 16:29Speaker 12: Emotions that I had before, and I don't know how
- 16:33Speaker 12: I'm supposed to feel now, and I don't want to
- 16:35Speaker 12: feel that way.
- 16:37Speaker 11: So let's say you didn't have a court order, would
- 16:39Speaker 11: you be with him?
- 16:44Speaker 6: Where did you go?
- 16:46Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 16:46Speaker 11: Then Mary Beth aka Bambi is whissed off by what
- 16:51Speaker 11: he's bouncers, Bambi, do you want to answer more? Guess
- 16:55Speaker 11: she's done for the night. But the questions are looming.
- 16:58Speaker 11: What happens if the judge this video? Will she get
- 17:01Speaker 11: sent back to the slammer? We do know one thing
- 17:04Speaker 11: is for sure. If that happens, Mary Beth will be
- 17:08Speaker 11: hanging up that g string for a jail house jumpsuit.
- 17:13Speaker 1: If convicted, Hagland faces up to two years in prison
- 17:16Speaker 1: for the sexual exploitation charge and could go on the
- 17:19Speaker 1: state's sex offender registry for up to ten years. Now,
- 17:23Speaker 1: we want to hear from you. If you were this
- 17:25Speaker 1: kid's parents, would you let him see Haglin now that
- 17:27Speaker 1: he's eighteen? Tweet us your answer at Crime Watch Daily
- 17:32Speaker 1: coming up. Two missing women one thing in common. This
- 17:37Speaker 1: man his ex girlfriend vanished years ago now while he's

- 17:46Speaker 1: queen in her high school boyfriend the Picture of Young
- 17:50Speaker 1: Love until.
- 17:51Speaker 8: Japanese in their process of investigating, they talk to a
- 17:54Speaker 8: neighbor who says that they saw something disturbing.
- 17:57Speaker 1: That's coming up. Now to a breaking story out of Missouri.

- 18:29Speaker 9: was the last person to be seen with her.
- 18:32Speaker 1: A twenty one year old girl disappears, her car is
- 18:36Speaker 1: found abandoned and torched on the side of the road,
- 18:39Speaker 1: and as of just a few days ago, the last
- 18:41Speaker 1: person she was seen with alive, Kyler Hust was placed
- 18:45Speaker 1: under arrest but for what. You may not know his
- 18:48Speaker 1: face now, but to our regular Crime Watch daily viewers,
- 18:52Speaker 1: he may look familiar. Several months ago, we brought to
- 18:55Speaker 1: you the story of missing Missouri Team Kara Kopetski.
- 18:59Speaker 14: I don't even believe that car is a missing person.
- 19:02Speaker 15: I believe she was murdered.
- 19:04Speaker 1: She was last seen in this surveillance video leaving her
- 19:07Speaker 1: school just hours before she vanished.
- 19:10Speaker 15: That kid loved me and I loved her and who
- 19:14Speaker 15: we were a family.
- 19:15Speaker 1: It was only a few days after Kara had filed
- 19:18Speaker 1: a protection order against her abusive on again, off again boyfriend,
- 19:22Speaker 1: The man who had not long before that abducted her
- 19:25Speaker 1: from work and threatened to slit her throat, the same
- 19:29Speaker 1: man police arrested just days ago, kyler Ust. It was
- 19:35Speaker 1: Wednesday of last week, September seventh, when, just before going
- 19:39Speaker 1: to bed, twenty one year old Remore, Missouri resident Jessica
- 19:42Speaker 1: Runyans sent this simple text to her mom, sweet Dreams.
- 19:47Speaker 1: After that a picture of herself and her cat Tig.
- 19:50Speaker 1: It would be their last communication. The next day, Thursday,
- 19:56Speaker 1: September eighth, the same day our story about Kara Kopetski aired,
- 20:00Speaker 1: Jessica was seen at a party with kyler Ust. No
- 20:04Speaker 1: one has seen her since.
- 20:06Speaker 11: Always sweet girl, Always cared a lot about folks, Always
- 20:09Speaker 11: wanted to give people the benefit of doubt.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Friday, Jessica's mom filed a missing person's report with police,
- 20:14Speaker 1: then started reaching out to her daughter's friend. In this
- 20:17Speaker 1: desperate text to another boy who was at the party,
- 20:20Speaker 1: she writes, please, if you know where I can find
- 20:23Speaker 1: my daughter, let me know. I filed a missing person's report.
- 20:26Speaker 1: I need to know she is okay, And with the
- 20:29Speaker 1: boy's response, Jessica's mom gets her first clue. I'm sorry,
- 20:33Speaker 1: I don't he says. She left with Kyler for Kara
- 20:37Speaker 1: Kopetski's parents. Talking to our affiliate WDAF just a few
- 20:41Speaker 1: days ago, it feels like more than just a coincidence.
- 20:45Speaker 14: We heard about Jessica's disappearance first thing Saturday morning, and
- 20:49Speaker 14: it was through Facebook, and you know, as you're setting
- 20:54Speaker 14: and you're talking to your family and your friends, because
- 20:57Speaker 14: of course, everybody's running up to and saying, hey, did
- 21:00Speaker 14: you hear Kyler is involved in another girl's disappearance.
- 21:03Speaker 1: When you learned your daughter's an ex boyfriend.
- 21:07Speaker 14: Was like Tom, I knew immediately that that it wasn't
- 21:11Speaker 14: a good thing.
- 21:13Speaker 1: In the aftermath of Kara's disappearance, a whole lot of
- 21:16Speaker 1: suspicious eyes started turning toward Kyler, and some, like his
- 21:20Speaker 1: old friend Caitlin Ferris, even told us he went as
- 21:23Speaker 1: far as to confess to Kara's murder.
- 21:27Speaker 5: She basically explained to him that she didn't want to
- 21:31Speaker 5: be with him anymore. Then he said he kind of.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Just freaked out.
- 21:36Speaker 6: Things got a little physical, and the next thing he
- 21:38Speaker 6: knew is she wasn't breathing.
- 21:40Speaker 2: And because he.
- 21:41Speaker 9: Trusted you, do you trust that he's telling you the truth?
- 21:43Speaker 3: Oh?
- 21:43Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely.
- 21:45Speaker 1: And Caitlyn wasn't even the only one making those claims.
- 21:49Speaker 1: In this recording made by private detective Marlene Rockwell, another
- 21:53Speaker 1: one of Kyler's ex girlfriends, goes into even more detail.
- 21:57Speaker 14: In her interview, she describes to be what he did
- 22:00Speaker 14: to her and also what he did what he did
- 22:04Speaker 14: to Kara Kopetski.
- 22:06Speaker 1: One word to describe what we will hear is what
- 22:09Speaker 1: it is.
- 22:11Speaker 16: He's admitted to it to me. He told me he
- 22:13Speaker 16: killed her, and he said, I've seen girls faces turned purple?
- 22:19Speaker 16: Have you ever seen the life leave someone's eyes? And
- 22:22Speaker 16: I got really scared at that point.
- 22:24Speaker 1: But without any physical evidence, police were not confident enough
- 22:28Speaker 1: they could get a conviction.
- 22:29Speaker 17: I want the family to get some type of resolution,
- 22:33Speaker 17: but at the same time, I want it the right way.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Who Ever did this I will.
- 22:37Speaker 17: Beet charged someday and When that get charge gets filed,
- 22:41Speaker 17: it will stick, I promise.
- 22:45Speaker 1: But it's been nearly ten years since Kara walked out
- 22:48Speaker 1: those high school doors, and her case remains unsolved.
- 22:52Speaker 6: One thing I really do pray about is that some
- 22:55Speaker 6: night her parents will be able to lay down and
- 22:58Speaker 6: know where their daughter's at.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Unfortunately, now there's another family ending their days without their daughter.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Friends and family tell police that they know about Kyler
- 23:10Speaker 1: and release this poster which shows Jessica's face and her
- 23:14Speaker 1: black Chevy Equinox. But then just before two Saturday morning, Yeah, that.
- 23:20Speaker 10: Vehicle, a black Chevy Equinox, was found behind me here,
- 23:24Speaker 10: just off a Blue River road.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Authorities find that charred remains of Jessica's car. Soon after
- 23:29Speaker 1: that they find who they think torched it. Kyler used
- 23:33Speaker 1: was arrested just this past Sunday for knowingly burning the
- 23:36Speaker 1: vehicle and is currently being held on a fifty thousand
- 23:39Speaker 1: dollars cash bond.
- 23:42Speaker 14: Thankfully, they've found enough evidence to lock him up for
- 23:46Speaker 14: at least the burning of the car, and they can
- 23:48Speaker 14: grow him for information and hopefully he'll break and he
- 23:53Speaker 14: will tell anything he knows about Jessica and for us,
- 23:59Speaker 14: hopefully break and give up some information about Carr as well.
- 24:03Speaker 1: To date, Jessica is still missing.
- 24:07Speaker 12: The police continue to search for her.
- 24:10Speaker 10: She's twenty one years old.
- 24:12Speaker 6: Her disappearance is considered by the police to be a
- 24:15Speaker 6: suspicious missing person's case.
- 24:18Speaker 1: A spokesman for the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office has declined
- 24:21Speaker 1: to comment on the matter for now, telling other media
- 24:24Speaker 1: outlets quote the case is now under seal for now.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Just as Kara Kopetski's friends and family have done for years,
- 24:32Speaker 1: those who know Jessica search desperately for any sign of
- 24:35Speaker 1: the girl they love. But then, as we started looking
- 24:39Speaker 1: back through our own investigation into Kara's disappearance, we noticed
- 24:43Speaker 1: something odd. Months ago before his arrest, our own Andrea
- 24:47Speaker 1: Isisam tracked Kyler down to his grandfather's house to ask
- 24:51Speaker 1: him about Kara. What we had no way of knowing
- 24:53Speaker 1: then was who else may have been there? Hello? How
- 24:58Speaker 1: are you next on Crime Watch Daily?
- 25:02Speaker 3: Do you think he killed her?
- 25:04Speaker 1: No, we're on the scene at Kyler's when.
- 25:07Speaker 9: Excuse me, ma'am, is there something you can help us with?
- 25:10Speaker 1: Who else was in that house?
- 25:11Speaker 13: With a show called Crime Watch Daily?
- 25:13Speaker 1: Friend, We're back now with more on the troubling story
- 25:19Speaker 1: of Jessica Runyans, a Kansas City woman who just disappeared.
- 25:23Speaker 1: It turns out the last man she was seen with,
- 25:26Speaker 1: Kyler EUSt, is connected to another headline making missing person's case.
- 25:30Speaker 1: Andrea Isisam has all new details.
- 25:33Speaker 9: Crime Watch Daily brought you the tragic story of Kara Kopetski,
- 25:37Speaker 9: a girl who walked out the doors of her high
- 25:39Speaker 9: school and disappeared Forever, Sir. Speaking to our affiliate WDAF
- 25:56Speaker 9: just days ago, Cara's mom says she still suspects Carra's
- 26:00Speaker 9: TX boyfriend, Kyler used in that case.
- 26:03Speaker 14: Well, I've told people over and over and over again,
- 26:05Speaker 14: if I had to bet my life on him being
- 26:08Speaker 14: responsible for my daughter's disappearance, I would.
- 26:12Speaker 9: And yes, Kyler has never been charged with anything in
- 26:16Speaker 9: connection with car Is vanishing, but he is in jail
- 26:20Speaker 9: now a person of interest in another girl's disappearance.
- 26:24Speaker 11: If he is charged, what do you think should happen
- 26:26Speaker 11: to him?
- 26:27Speaker 6: I mean, I definitely think he needs to rot in jail,
- 26:30Speaker 6: that's for sure. He needs to have some sort of consequences.
- 26:33Speaker 5: You were both of these cases down.
- 26:36Speaker 9: Twenty one year old Jessica Runyins was last seen leaving
- 26:40Speaker 9: a party with ust in her black Chevy Equinox, a
- 26:43Speaker 9: car cops found charred and abandoned on the side of
- 26:46Speaker 9: the road. A few days later, Kyler was arrested for
- 26:50Speaker 9: knowingly burning that vehicle. But there was something else about
- 26:54Speaker 9: that car, something that suddenly jarred my memory. It was
- 26:58Speaker 9: just a few months ago when we at Kyler used
- 27:00Speaker 9: down to his grandfather's house to ask him about Kara,
- 27:04Speaker 9: and oddly enough, as I walked up, I remember seeing
- 27:07Speaker 9: this car in the driveway, a black Chevy Equinox. Thinking
- 27:13Speaker 9: nothing of it at the time, I tried to get
- 27:15Speaker 9: Kyler to come to the door, instead getting his granddad.
- 27:20Speaker 13: Hello, how are you.
- 27:22Speaker 1: My name is Andrea isam.
- 27:24Speaker 13: I'm with a show called Crime Watch Daily. We are
- 27:26Speaker 13: working on a case about Kara Kopetski, his ex girlfriend,
- 27:34Speaker 13: and with a show called Crime Watch Daily, we're trying
- 27:36Speaker 13: to help police get some answers so we can give
- 27:38Speaker 13: the family some closure and some resolution to this.
- 27:42Speaker 2: The twenty times.
- 27:45Speaker 17: He didn't talk to them, he had nothing else to
- 27:48Speaker 17: offer because he has nothing about.
- 27:51Speaker 9: But his denial does little to console her stepdad, Jim.
- 27:55Speaker 15: One of her last phone calls was with her boyfriend
- 28:00Speaker 15: and it was like a twenty minute conversation. I think
- 28:04Speaker 15: he picked her up. I think they talked, discussed whatever
- 28:08Speaker 15: about moving on, and I think that he didn't want
- 28:13Speaker 15: to let Cara go.
- 28:14Speaker 10: You truly believe, in your heart of hearts that he
- 28:16Speaker 10: did something horrible and criminal to your daughter.
- 28:20Speaker 9: Yes, When I pressed Kyler's grandpa on that accusation, he
- 28:24Speaker 9: had this to say, if he had something to do
- 28:27Speaker 9: with this, what would that do to you?
- 28:28Speaker 4: As his grandfather, he would hurt me.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Do you think he killed her? No?
- 28:35Speaker 4: No, And you can say that.
- 28:39Speaker 9: It was a dramatic moment, but there was another one.
- 28:42Speaker 9: We could not have known the significance of them. As
- 28:45Speaker 9: I was trying to get Kyler to come down, a
- 28:48Speaker 9: young woman briefly came to the door.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Hello, excuse me, ma'am.
- 28:54Speaker 4: Excuse me, ma'am.
- 28:55Speaker 2: Is there something you can help us with?
- 28:56Speaker 13: What with a show called crime Watch Daily?
- 29:01Speaker 9: So who was that girl with the car in the
- 29:03Speaker 9: driveway matching the same make and model as Jessica's. Our
- 29:07Speaker 9: producers were curious enough to share that information with police,
- 29:12Speaker 9: and they have expressed interest in.
- 29:14Speaker 1: Looking into it further.
- 29:15Speaker 9: We'll keep you updated over the coming days as this
- 29:18Speaker 9: story continues to develop.
- 29:19Speaker 6: I really hope it turns out for the best, you know,
- 29:22Speaker 6: I really hope that Jessica is found safe and that
- 29:27Speaker 6: the Kopetski family gets some justice.
- 29:29Speaker 9: But for now, two families wait for answers and a
- 29:33Speaker 9: community clings to hope.
- 29:36Speaker 3: You've been in touch with Jessica's mom, explain how that went.
- 29:40Speaker 2: Sunday morning.
- 29:41Speaker 14: She had reached out to me with her phone number,
- 29:43Speaker 14: asking me to call her because she really felt like
- 29:46Speaker 14: she needed to talk to somebody that would understand how
- 29:48Speaker 14: she felt.
- 29:50Speaker 2: What did you say? I just call?
- 29:52Speaker 14: I called her and I said, Hi, this is around
- 29:54Speaker 14: the Beckford. I'm Kark Petsky's mother, And she said, oh,
- 29:58Speaker 14: thank you so much for calling. Because when you're in
- 30:02Speaker 14: a situation, nobody understands how you feel. But another person
- 30:05Speaker 14: with the missing child.
- 30:08Speaker 18: Two families feeling a pain today that no family should
- 30:11Speaker 18: ever feel, and right now it's time for you to
- 30:13Speaker 18: help them heal. If you have any information on the
- 30:16Speaker 18: disappearance of Jessica Runyans or Karl Kopetski, you can leave
- 30:19Speaker 18: a tip anonymously at Crimewatchdaily dot com.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Coming up, she had a passion for animals.
- 30:28Speaker 7: We gave her a pony, and then she started taking
- 30:31Speaker 7: lessons and she's written ever since.
- 30:33Speaker 1: But this rodeo queen also fell head over heels for
- 30:37Speaker 1: this guy.
- 30:38Speaker 8: During her senior year, she started dating Tanner Florized.
- 30:41Speaker 1: The bad romance that led to a desperate search next.
- 30:47Speaker 1: All right, now a story we followed very closely here
- 30:50Speaker 1: at Crime Watch Daily. A high school romance, a rodeo queen,
- 30:54Speaker 1: and a terrible tragedy. Here's pat Lalama.
- 30:58Speaker 19: Ashley do little bit as she stood next to her
- 31:01Speaker 19: boyfriend Tanner Flores the high school seniors headed a prom.
- 31:06Speaker 19: One month later, it would be a different story. From
- 31:12Speaker 19: an early age, Ashley had a passion for animals.
- 31:16Speaker 7: Her five year old birthday, we gave her a pony,
- 31:18Speaker 7: and then she started taking lessons and she's ridden ever since.
- 31:22Speaker 19: To help foster that love of horses, Ashley's family would
- 31:26Speaker 19: build a ranch just for her.
- 31:28Speaker 7: She loved it out here. She loved the sunsets.
- 31:30Speaker 19: They were her life, and the eighteen year old's life
- 31:34Speaker 19: was one success story after another. She was president of
- 31:37Speaker 19: the local chapter of the Future Farmers of America. She
- 31:40Speaker 19: had just graduated high school and earned a scholarship to
- 31:44Speaker 19: attend Colorado State's famed Veterinary School in the fall, and
- 31:48Speaker 19: maybe the biggest thing in her life. The accomplished writer
- 31:52Speaker 19: was about to become the Boulder County Fair Rodeo Queen.
- 31:56Speaker 7: She loved life and she lived it to the fullest.
- 32:00Speaker 8: During her senior year, she started dating Tanner.
- 32:02Speaker 19: Floresh kdvr's Kirk Yunkie followed Ashley's case.
- 32:06Speaker 8: And the two were a very typical high school couple
- 32:09Speaker 8: young love if you will, taking pictures at dances and
- 32:12Speaker 8: posting those pictures all over social media.
- 32:15Speaker 19: One of those from the night of the homecoming dance
- 32:17Speaker 19: with the caption you know you're lucky when you find
- 32:21Speaker 19: someone who makes you happy and get to call them yours.
- 32:25Speaker 19: Flash forward one year later, Ashley wasn't happy anymore and
- 32:29Speaker 19: she told Tanner it was over. Days later she would vanish.
- 32:34Speaker 7: She said I love you, and I said I love
- 32:35Speaker 7: you back, and that was the last time we talked.
- 32:39Speaker 19: Ashley's frantic mother calls Larimer County Sheriffs to report her
- 32:42Speaker 19: missing them. They go out looking for the team and
- 32:46Speaker 19: find her car at a local reservoir, but there was
- 32:49Speaker 19: no sign of Ashley. Where was she?
- 32:52Speaker 8: As police started their investigation, they started calling friends and family,
- 32:56Speaker 8: and a common theme seemed to be that everyone brought
- 32:59Speaker 8: up her ex boyfriend friend Tanner that he had recently
- 33:01Speaker 8: been depressed about the two breaking up, and some of
- 33:04Speaker 8: his friends even talked about a snapchat that he had
- 33:06Speaker 8: just posted that they thought was suicidal in nature.
- 33:11Speaker 19: Even more worrisome, Flores was also missing, and so was
- 33:15Speaker 19: the twenty two caliber revolver from his dad's gun cabinet.
- 33:19Speaker 19: Detectives pinged the teenagers cell phones and pinpoint a location
- 33:24Speaker 19: the vacant home of Tanner's late grandfather, Japanies.
- 33:27Speaker 8: In their process of investigating, they talked to a neighbor
- 33:30Speaker 8: who says that they saw something disturbing. They apparently saw
- 33:33Speaker 8: Tanner pulling what appeared to be a bundle of blankets
- 33:36Speaker 8: out of the back of a truck, and they said
- 33:38Speaker 8: that when he set this bundle of blankets down on
- 33:41Speaker 8: the ground, they even thought they saw an arm sticking
- 33:44Speaker 8: out of this bundle of blankets.
- 33:46Speaker 19: Squat deputies move in and make an arrest. Tanner is
- 33:49Speaker 19: put in cuffs. A body, which would later be idd
- 33:52Speaker 19: as Ashley's, is discovered in the back of the truck.
- 33:57Speaker 19: Ashley's family and friends are crushed.
- 34:00Speaker 7: I could hug her one more time.
- 34:01Speaker 19: So, according to police documents, Flores admits the detectives to
- 34:07Speaker 19: shooting Ashley in the head twice because he was angry
- 34:11Speaker 19: with her. A tragic end to a life that had
- 34:14Speaker 19: so much to offer.
- 34:17Speaker 7: We just see her in everything we do out here.
- 34:19Speaker 4: It's hard to look at this every day.
- 34:21Speaker 7: It's I know, she would have wanted us to move
- 34:25Speaker 7: forward and.
- 34:26Speaker 4: To stay here.
- 34:28Speaker 7: This was her and she's you know, she's living in
- 34:32Speaker 7: everything here.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Flores is currently in jail, being held without vond He's
- 34:38Speaker 1: facing two counts of first degree murder in one count
- 34:41Speaker 1: of second degree kidnapping. Prosecutors have yet to announce if
- 34:45Speaker 1: you will face the death penalty. Coming up, we break
- 34:51Speaker 1: a shunky new headline in the John Benet Ramsey case.
- 34:54Speaker 10: Do you believe it's still possible to figure out whose
- 34:58Speaker 10: DNA that is on John Benet?
- 35:01Speaker 1: Yes, that's next book, all right now, the John Benet
- 35:06Speaker 1: Ramsey story. You won't see anywhere else. A DNA expert
- 35:10Speaker 1: who's looked extensively into the Ramsey case says he believes
- 35:14Speaker 1: he knows how to find the killer, but no one
- 35:16Speaker 1: will listen. Our Ana Garcia is challenging him on his
- 35:20Speaker 1: shocking new claim.
- 35:21Speaker 10: Chris, I've come here to Denver to meet with a
- 35:23Speaker 10: DNA expert who says he has new explosive information that
- 35:27Speaker 10: could change the Ramsey case. Do you believe it's still
- 35:32Speaker 10: possible to figure out whose DNA that is on John Beney.
- 35:38Speaker 2: I'm absolutely certain.
- 35:42Speaker 10: And yet, at least for now, this is a story
- 35:45Speaker 10: without an end. Just hours after the frantic nine to
- 35:55Speaker 10: one one call, John Ramsey would find his daughter's body
- 35:59Speaker 10: wrapped in a blanket in the basement. Suspicion quickly turned
- 36:04Speaker 10: to the parents, and in nineteen ninety nine, a team
- 36:07Speaker 10: of prosecutors, including Mitch Morrissey, was brought in from Denver
- 36:11Speaker 10: to help assist with a grand jury investigation that ended
- 36:14Speaker 10: with a vote to indict John and Patsy for their
- 36:18Speaker 10: daughter's death, but Boulder DA Alex Hunter didn't think there
- 36:23Speaker 10: was enough evidence to go to trial. What work did
- 36:25Speaker 10: you do on the John bin A.
- 36:26Speaker 3: Ramsey case.
- 36:27Speaker 20: We advised the District Attorney's office and the police about
- 36:32Speaker 20: touch the DNA.
- 36:33Speaker 10: Tell me what touch DNA is.
- 36:34Speaker 20: Touch DNA actually is DNA which is transferred when somebody
- 36:37Speaker 20: touches person.
- 36:39Speaker 10: The BOULDERPD has denied Eichlenbaum did any work on the case,
- 36:43Speaker 10: and ultimately they used another lab to do the analysis
- 36:47Speaker 10: that cleared the Ramseys. But Richard remains adamant he advised
- 36:51Speaker 10: and what's more, he says, no one listened.
- 36:54Speaker 20: But went wrong is that they stopped too early. They
- 36:58Speaker 20: were getting somewhere with the DNA inside the Penties and
- 37:01Speaker 20: on the Long Johns. They should have gone further with
- 37:03Speaker 20: dead So why.
- 37:04Speaker 10: Not reopen it and retest the DNA with the new technology.
- 37:09Speaker 20: That's my that's my idea.
- 37:11Speaker 4: So why isn't anyone letting him?
- 37:14Speaker 10: Just over a week ago, a Denver judge barred Eichlenbaum
- 37:17Speaker 10: from testifying at a trial, calling his credentials and experience
- 37:22Speaker 10: into question. Then Denver's district Attorney, One Mitch Morrissey sat
- 37:27Speaker 10: down with our affiliate KDVR.
- 37:30Speaker 21: This is a dangerous, dangerous thing he does and he
- 37:34Speaker 21: needed to be exposed.
- 37:35Speaker 20: That that's complete nonsense.
- 37:37Speaker 10: Richard says. These new claims are not only ridiculous, they're personal.
- 37:43Speaker 10: So why do you think it's so personal?
- 37:46Speaker 20: It started with John Binney Ramsey. Mister Morrissey was going
- 37:49Speaker 20: after the parents. The touch DNA could prove him wrong,
- 37:53Speaker 20: and actually his own Denver laboratory already proved him wrong.
- 37:57Speaker 21: Now, I know he's saying it was our fault, but
- 38:00Speaker 21: it was a judge that ruled this, not us.
- 38:03Speaker 10: Still, Richard stands by his statements, and twenty years after
- 38:07Speaker 10: John Bennet's tragic death, there is at least one person
- 38:11Speaker 10: who is convinced that justice could be just over the horizon.
- 38:15Speaker 10: So you believe that the information is still in that
- 38:19Speaker 10: DNA and we may very well be able to find
- 38:21Speaker 10: out who her killer was or killers.
- 38:24Speaker 2: Yes, I'm sure of it.
