- 0:01You steer straight into whatever you stare at.
- 0:04There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:07Chad #1149 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:11yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:14you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:16This message is dedicated to John Assyraf.
- 0:19You can get a free copy of my book, The Most Powerful Story in

- 0:30Here's the upgrade. You think your expectations are
- 0:33just predictions, but upgraded thinking knows it's a steering
- 0:35wheel. Here's the story.
- 0:38They teach you this on the first day of racing school when your
- 0:41car starts to slide toward the wall.
- 0:43Every instinct screams to look at the wall.
- 0:46And that's exactly why drivers hit it.
- 0:48Your hands follow, your eyes fixate on the wall, and you
- 0:51drive into the wall. So they train you to do the
- 0:54hard, unnatural thing. Turn your eyes to the open
- 0:56track, the line you want, the way out.
- 0:59The car goes where you look. Your brain runs the same wiring.
- 1:03John Aserath teaches that your reticular activating system Ras,
- 1:09that ancient filter at the base of your brain, decides what
- 1:12reaches your awareness based on what you've told.
- 1:15It matters. What you expect largely
- 1:18determines what you experience. What you expect largely
- 1:22determines what you experience. You don't just predict your
- 1:26experience, you steer into it. The same idea has been
- 1:30illustrated this way. Look around you, wherever you
- 1:32are, and find 3 things that are brown.
- 1:34Now close your eyes. Unless you're driving your car
- 1:37right now and picture something that was blue around you, it's
- 1:41usually not possible because you weren't looking for something
- 1:43blue. You steered your focus on what
- 1:46was brown. However, sometimes the things
- 1:49we're looking for don't show up. They're just not there.
- 1:54You can have an apple tree and expect the fruit to grow, but
- 1:56you can't control it. What you can control is watering
- 2:00your apple tree, fertilizing it, and keeping the bugs and pests
- 2:03away. You are entitled to the action,
- 2:07never the fruit. You can stare at the branches
- 2:09and leaves all season, but there's no guarantee you aren't
- 2:13entitled to the results you want.
- 2:16The better story to tell yourself is I aim my eyes at my
- 2:20effort and let go of the fruit. Steer toward the effort.
- 2:24John Wooden refused to define success as trophies.
- 2:28Success wasn't the fruit. He called it Peace of Mind,
- 2:32which is the direct result of self satisfaction in knowing you
- 2:36made the effort to do your best. Success was in the effort.
- 2:41Marcus Aurelius said the same thing to himself.
- 2:44Ambition ties your well-being to what other people say and do.
- 2:48Sanity ties it to your own actions.
- 2:52Sanity is focusing on your own efforts.
- 2:55Fix your eyes there. Do your work, do it well.
- 2:59Then let go and let God tell me a story of aiming at effort over
- 3:03outcome to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 3:06Send someone a text and ask them how are you staring your
- 3:09expectations today?
